Let f in Z[X,Y,Z] be a non-constant, absolutely irreducible, homogeneous polynomial with integer coefficients, such that the projective curve given by f=0 has a function field isomorphic to the rational function field Q(t). We show that all integral solutions of the Diophantine equation f=0 (up to those corresponding to some singular points) can be parametrized by a single triple of integer-valued polynomials. In general, it is not possible to parametrize this set of solutions by a single triple of polynomials with integer coefficients.
Motivated by the theory of Diophantine $m$-tuples, we study rational points on quadratic twists $H^d:d y^2=(x^2+6x-18)(-x^2+2x+2)$, where $|d|$ is a prime. If we denote by $S(X)=\{ d \in \mathbb{Z}: H^d(\mathbb{Q})\ne \emptyset, |d| \textrm{ is a prime}\textrm{ and } |d| < X\},$ then, by assuming some standard conjectures about the ranks of elliptic curves in the family of quadratic twists, we prove that as $X \rightarrow \infty$ $$\frac{43}{256}+o(1)\le \frac{\#S(X)}{2π(X)}\le \frac{46}{256}+o(1).$$
The problem of finding all possible extensions of a given rational diophantine quadruple to a rational diophantine quintuple is equivalent to the determination of the set of rational points on a certain curve of genus 5 that can be written as an intersection of three diagonal quadrics in $\mathbb P^4$. We discuss how one can (try to) determine the set of rational points on such a curve. We apply our approach to the original question in several cases. In particular, we show that Fermat's diophantine quadruple (1,3,8,120) can be extended to a rational diophantine quintuple in only one way, namel…
Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically irreducible curve of genus at least two defined over a number field $K$. We prove that there is an algorithm that determines whether $X$ has a $K$-rational point if Grothendieck's section conjecture holds for $X$.
We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds on a certain four-dimensional Frobenius number determined by a prime pair $(p,q)$, $2<p<q$, including exact formulae for two infinite subclasses of such pairs. Our work is motivated by the study of compact Riemann surfaces which can be realized as a semi-regular $pq$-fold coverings of surfaces of lower genus. In this context, the Frobenius number is (up to an additive translation) the largest genus in which no surface is such a covering. In many cases it is also the largest genus in which no surface admits an automorphism of order $pq$. The general $t$-di…
In this paper we provide a new parametrization for the diophantine equation $A^2+B^2+C^2=3D^2$ and give a series of corollaries. We discuss some connections with Lagrange's four-square theorem. As applications, we find new parameterizations of equilateral triangles and regular tetrahedrons having integer coordinates in three dimensions.
We are interested in solving the congruences $f^3+g^3+1\equiv 0\pmod{fg}$ and $f^4-4g^2+4\equiv 0\pmod{fg}$ in polynomials $f, g$ with rational coefficients. Moreover, we present results of computations of all integer points on certain one parametric curves of genus 1 and 3, related to cubic and quartic fields, respectively.
Let $A$ be a finite set of relatively prime positive integers, and let $S(A)$ be the set of all nonnegative integral linear combinations of elements of $A$. The set $S(A)$ is a semigroup that contains all sufficiently large integers. The largest integer not in $S(A)$ is the Frobenius number of $A$, and the number of positive integers not in $S(A)$ is the genus of $A$. Sharp and Sylvester proved in 1884 that the Frobenius number of the set $A = \{a,b\}$ is $ab-a-b$, and that the genus of $A$ is $(a-1)(b-1)/2$. Graded rings and a simple form of Hilbert's syzygy theorem are used to give a commuta…
A rational Diophantine triple is a set of three nonzero rational a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares. We say that the elliptic curve y^2 = (ax+1)(bx+1)(cx+1) is induced by the triple {a,b,c}. In this paper, we describe a new method for construction of elliptic curves over Q with reasonably high rank based on a parametrization of rational Diophantine triples. In particular, we construct an elliptic curve induced by a rational Diophantine triple with rank equal to 12, and an infinite family of such curves with rank >= 7, which are both the current records for that k…
If $V$ is an irreducible algebraic variety over a number field $K$, and $L$ is a field containing $K$, we say that $V$ is diophantine-stable for $L/K$ if $V(L) = V(K)$. We prove that if $V$ is either a simple abelian variety, or a curve of genus at least one, then under mild hypotheses there is a set $S$ of rational primes with positive density such that for every $\ell \in S$ and every $n \ge 1$, there are infinitely many cyclic extensions $L/K$ of degree $\ell^n$ for which $V$ is diophantine-stable. We use this result to study the collection of finite extensions of $K$ generated by points in…
This paper deals with some classical problems about the projective geometry of complex algebraic curves. We call \textit{locally toric} a projective curve that in a neighbourhood of every point has a local analytical parametrization of type $(t^{a_1},...,t^{a_n})$, with $a_1,..., a_n$ relatively prime positive integers. In this paper we prove that the general tangent line to a locally toric curve in $\bP^3$ meets the curve only at the point of tangency. This result extends and simplifies those of the paper \cite{kaji} by H.Kaji where the same result is proven for any curve in $\bP^3$ such that…
The aim of this paper is to prove the possibility of linearization of such equations by means of introduction of new variables. For $n=2$ such a procedure is well known, when new variables are components of spinors and they are widely used in mathematical physics. For example, parametrization of Pythagoras threes $a^{2} +b^{2}$, $a^{2} -b^{2}$, $2ab$ may be cited as an example in number theory where two independent variables form a spinor which can be obtained by solution of a system of two linear equations. We also investigate the combinatorial estimate for the smallest sum $r(n)=r _{1}+r_{2}…
A Diophantine $m$-tuple with elements in the field $K$ is a set of $m$ non-zero (distinct) elements of $K$ with the property that the product of any two distinct elements is one less than a square in $K$. Let $X: (x^2-1)(y^2-1)(z^2-1)=k^2,$ be a threefold. Its $K$-rational points parametrize Diophantine triples over $K$ such that the product of the elements of the triple that corresponds to the point $(x,y,z,k)\in X(K)$ is equal to $k$. We denote by $\overline{X}$ the projective closure of $X$ and for a fixed $k$ by $X_k$ a variety defined by the same equation as $X$. We prove that the variety…
In this paper, we introduce an algebro-geometric formulation for Siegel's theorem using an improvement of Lang's version of Roth's theorem over finitely generated fields of characteristic zero. In fact, we prove that, for an affine open curve in an irreducible smooth curve of genus at least one, any finitely generated subgroup of the additive group of the affine ambient space intersects the open curve in only finitely many points. This was proved only for finitely generated subgroups defined over a localization of the ring of integers of a number field by Mahler and others.
In this paper we present a new method of solving certain quartic and higher degree homogeneous polynomial diophantine equations in four variables. The method can also be extended to solve simultaneous homogeneous polynomial diophantine equations, in five or more variables, with one of the equations being of degree $\geq 4$. We show that, under certain conditions, the method yields an arbitrarily large number of integer solutions of such diophantine equations and diophantine systems, some examples being a sextic equation in four variables, a tenth degree equation in six variables, and two simul…
Let $C$ be a smooth genus one curve described by a quartic polynomial equation over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ with $P\in C(\mathbb Q)$. We give an explicit criterion for the divisibility-by-$2$ of a rational point on the elliptic curve $(C,P)$. This provides an analogue to the classical criterion of the divisibility-by-$2$ on elliptic curves described by Weierstrass equations. We employ this criterion to investigate the question of extending a rational $D(q)$-quadruple to a quintuple. We give concrete examples to which we can give an affirmative answer. One of these results implies that a…
We study the problem of efficiently constructing a curve C of genus 2 over a finite field F for which either the curve C itself or its Jacobian has a prescribed number N of F-rational points. In the case of the Jacobian, we show that any `CM-construction' to produce the required genus-2 curves necessarily takes time exponential in the size of its input. On the other hand, we provide an algorithm for producing a genus-2 curve with a given number of points that, heuristically, takes polynomial time for most input values. We illustrate the practical applicability of this algorithm by constructing…
The anomaly cancellation equations for the $U(1)$ gauge group can be written as a cubic equation in $n-1$ integer variables, where $n$ is the number of Weyl fermions carrying the $U(1)$ charge. We solve this Diophantine cubic equation by providing a parametrization of the charges in terms of $n-2$ integers, and prove that this is the most general solution.
Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus $g$ greater than zero. In the present paper we study the topological-dynamical action of the mapping class group on the $\Bbb T^n$-character variety giving necessary and sufficient conditions for Mod$(S)$-orbits to be dense. As an application, such a characterisation provides a dynamical proof of the Kronecker's Theorem concerning inhomogeneous diophantine approximation.
Two well-studied Diophantine equations are those of Pythagorean triples and elliptic curves, for the first we have a parametrization through rational points on the unit circle, and for the second we have a structure theorem for the group of rational solutions. Recently, Yekutieli discussed a connection between these two problems, and described the group structure of Pythagorean triples and the number of triples for a given hypotenuse. In arXiv:2112.03663 we generalized these methods and results to Pell's equation. We find a similar group structure and count on the number of solutions for a giv…
It is shown that Ramanujan's cubic transformation of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1$ arises from a relation between modular curves, namely the covering of $X_0(3)$ by $X_0(9)$. In general, when $2\le N\le 7$ the N-fold cover of $X_0(N)$ by $X_0(N^2)$ gives rise to an algebraic hypergeometric transformation. The N=2,3,4 transformations are arithmetic-geometric mean iterations, but the N=5,6,7 transformations are new. In the final two the change of variables is not parametrized by rational functions, since $X_0(6),X_0(7)$ are of genus 1. Since their quotients $X_0^+(6),X_0^+(7)$ unde…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 and C a connected nonsingular projective curve over k with genus g>1. Let (C,G) be a "big action", i.e. a pair (C,G) where G is a p-subgroup of the k-automorphism group of C such that |G|/g > 2p / p-1. We first study finiteness results on the values taken by the quotient |G|/g^2 when (C,G) runs over the big actions satisfying |G|/g^2 >M, for a given positive real M>0. Then, we exhibit a classification and a parametrization of such big actions when M=4/ (p^2-1)^2.
H. Davenport's Problem asks: What can we expect of two polynomials, over the integers, with the same ranges on almost all residue class fields? This stood out among many separated variable problems posed by Davenport, D.J. Lewis and A. Schinzel. By bounding the degrees, but expanding the maps and variables in Davenport's Problem, Galois stratification enhanced the separated variable theme, solving an Ax and Kochen problem from their Artin Conjecture work. J. Denef and F. Loeser applied this to add Chow motive coefficients to previously introduced zeta functions on a diophantine statement. By r…
