We consider spherical gravitational perturbations of AdS4 space-time satisfying general boundary conditions at spatial infinity. Using the holographic renormalization method, we compute the energy-momentum tensor and show that it can always be cast in the form of Cotton tensor for a dual boundary metric. In particular, axial and polar perturbations obeying the same boundary conditions for the effective Schrodinger wave-functions exhibit an energy-momentum/Cotton tensor duality at conformal infinity. We demonstrate explicitly that this is holographic manifestation of the electric/magnetic duality of linearized gravity in the bulk, which simply exchanges axial with polar perturbations of AdS4 space-time. We note on the side that this particular realization of gravitational duality is also valid for perturbations near flat and dS4 space-time, depending on the value of cosmological constant.
The holographic renormalization group (RG) flows in certain self-dual two dimensional QFT's models are studied. They are constructed as holographic duals to specific New Massive 3d Gravity (NMG) models coupled to scalar matter with "partially self-dual" superpotentials. The standard holographic RG constructions allow us to derive the exact form of their $β$- functions in terms of the corresponding NMG's domain walls solutions. By imposing invariance of the free energy, the central function and of the anomalous dimensions under specific matter field's duality transformation, we have found the c…
Recent progress which relates non-abelian T-duality of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SuGra solutions to the powerful techniques of Generalised geometry is reviewed. It is shown that SU(3) structure solutions are mapped to SU(2) structures and the transformation rule of the corresponding pure spinors is presented. This constitutes an important step on the road towards the utility of the duality within holography, showing for example, how smeared sources must transform and so how to add flavour to the T-duals.
We show that duality transformations of linearized gravity in four dimensions, i.e., rotations of the linearized Riemann tensor and its dual into each other, can be extended to the dynamical fields of the theory so as to be symmetries of the action and not just symmetries of the equations of motion. Our approach relies on the introduction of two "superpotentials", one for the spatial components of the spin-2 field and the other for their canonically conjugate momenta. These superpotentials are two-index, symmetric tensors. They can be taken to be the basic dynamical fields and appear locally i…
These pedagogical lectures given at the Corfu Summer Institute 2018 review two generalised notions of T-duality, non-Abelian T-duality and Poisson-Lie duality, and their applications. We explain how each of these has seen recent application in the context of holography. Non-Abelian T-duality has been used to construct new holographic dual geometries. Poisson-Lie duality has been used to construct new integrable string sigma-models including the $η$- and $λ$-deformations of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring thought to encode quantum group deformations of holography. We also comment on the doubl…
We use the AdS/SYM correspondence to study the relevant effects of compactified dimensions on the D-brane dynamics. We present a detailed picture of the T-duality transition between branes in type IIA and type IIB supergravity. An analysis of the renormalization scheme coming from the expectation values of background fields and the role of Wilson lines in it is given. We finally explore finite size effects and T-duality maps on the description of Wilson loops by supergravity.
I review recent work on the holographic relation between higher-spin theories in Anti-de Sitter spaces and conformal field theories. I present the main results of studies concerning the higher-spin holographic dual of the three-dimensional O(N) vector model. I discuss the special role played by certain double-trace deformations in Conformal Field Theories that have higher-spin holographic duals. Using the canonical formulation I show that duality transformations in a U(1) gauge theory on AdS4 induce boundary double-trace deformations. I argue that a similar effect takes place in the holography…
We develope the analogue of S-duality for linearized gravity in (3+1)-dimensions. Our basic idea is to consider the self-dual (anti-self-dual) curvature tensor for linearized gravity in the context of the Macdowell-Mansouri formalism. We find that the strong-weak coupling duality for linearized gravity is an exact symmetry and implies small-large duality for the cosmological constant.
In this paper we study the interplay of electric and magnetic backgrounds in determining the decoupling limit of coincident D-branes towards a noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) or open string (NCOS) theory. No decoupling limit has been found for NCYM with space-time noncommutativity. It is suggested that there is a new duality, which we call V-duality, which acts on NCOS with both space-space and space-time noncommutativity, resulting from decoupling in Lorentz-boost related backgrounds. We also show that the holographic correspondence, previously suggested by Li and Wu, between NCYM and its su…
We derive and test a novel holographic duality in the B-model topological string theory. The duality relates the B-model on certain Calabi-Yau three-folds to two-dimensional chiral algebras defined as gauged $βγ\,$ systems. The duality conjecturally captures a topological sector of more familiar $\mathrm{AdS}_5 / \mathrm{CFT}_4$ holographic dualities.
A formulation of linearized gravity which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in the internal space of the metric and its dual, and which contains both metrics as basic variables (rather than the corresponding prepotentials), is derived. In this bimetric formulation, the variables have a more immediate geometrical significance, but the action is non-local in space, contrary to what occurs in the prepotential formulation. More specifically, one finds that: (i) the kinetic term is non-local in space (but local in time); (ii) the Hamiltonian is local in space and in …
The space of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories exhibits an intricate structure of global one-form symmetries and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality orbits. In this paper we study this structure from the point of view of the holographic dual Type IIB string theory. Generalizing work by Witten, we map the different theories based on the gauge algebras $su(N)$, $so(N)$, and $sp(N)$ to a choice of boundary conditions on bulk gauge fields. We show how the one-form symmetries and their anomalies, as well as the duality properties of the gauge theories, arise in the holographic picture. Along t…
We start by describing two of the main proposals for duality in Abelian gauge theories, namely $F$(ield strength)-duality approach and the $S$% -duality formalism. We then discuss how $F$-duality and $S$-duality can be applied to the case of linearized gravity. By emphasizing the similarities and differences between these two type of dualities we explore the possibility of combining them in just one duality formalism.
In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of…
We revisit the derivation of higher spin bulk theory using the renormalization group in the dual field theory. We argue that existing proposals have problems already at the level of linearized perturbations on AdS. This is due to the form of the cutoff, which must act on bilinears in the fundamental fields rather than on the fields themselves. For the light-cone collective field theory, we show that the RG produces the correct linearized perturbations. We relate this to the precursor formula of de Mello Koch, Jevicki, Jin and Rodrigues, and we also elaborate on that result. The covariant RG an…
Recently a duality between a family of \mathcal{N}=2 supersymmetric higher spin theories on AdS3, and the 't Hooft like limit of a class of Kazama-Suzuki models (that are parametrised by N and k) was proposed. The higher spin theories can be described by a Chern-Simons theory based on the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra shs[μ], and under the duality, μis to be identified with λ=N/(N+k+1). Here we elucidate the structure of the (quantum) asymptotic symmetry algebra sW_{\infty}[μ] for arbitrary μand central charge c. In particular, we show that for each value of the central charge, there are ge…
We review the approach to quantum gravity based on supersymmetry, strings, and holography. This includes a survey of black holes in higher-dimensions, supersymmetry and supergravity, as well as string theory, black hole microstates, and the gauge/gravity duality. This presentation will appear as a chapter in "General Relativity and Gravitation: A Centennial Perspective", to be published by Cambridge University Press.
The idea of holography in gravity arose from the fact that the entropy of black holes is given by their surface area. The holography encountered in gauge/gravity duality has no such relation however; the boundary surface can be placed at an arbitrary location in AdS space and its area does not give the entropy of the bulk. The essential issues are also different between the two cases: in black holes we get Hawking radiation from the `holographic surface' which leads to the information issue, while in gauge/gravity duality there is no such radiation from the boundary surface. To resolve the inf…
Employing the world line spinning particle picture we discuss the appearance of several different `gauges' which we use to gain a deeper explanation of the Collective/Gravity identification. We discuss transformations and algebraic equivalences between them. For a bulk identification we develop a `gauge independent' representation where all gauge constraints are eliminated. This `gauge reduction' of Higher Spin Gravity demonstrates that the physical content of 4D AdS HS theory is represented by the dynamics of an unconstrained scalar field in 6d. It is in this gauge reduced form that HS Theory…
The linearized Einstein equations in D spacetime dimensions can be written as twisted self-duality equations expressing that the linearized curvature tensor of the graviton described by a rank-two symmetric tensor, is dual to the linearized curvature tensor of the "dual graviton" described by a tensor of (D-3,1) Young symmetry type. In the case of 4 dimensions, both the graviton and its dual are rank-two symmetric tensors (Young symmetry type (1,1)), while in the case of 11 space-time dimensions relevant to M-theory, the dual graviton is described by a tensor of (8,1) Young symmetry type. We p…
The concept of electric-magnetic duality can be extended to linearized gravity. It has indeed been established that in four dimensions, the Pauli-Fierz action (quadratic part of the Einstein-Hilbert action) can be cast in a form that is manifestly invariant under duality rotations in the internal 2-plane of the spacetime curvature and its dual. In order to achieve this manifestly duality-invariant form, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials", which form a duality multiplet. These prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are, for each, linearized diffeomorphi…
Wormholes are intriguing classical solutions in General Relativity, that have fascinated theoretical physicists for decades. In recent years, especially in Holography, gravitationalWormhole geometries have found a new life in many theoretical ideas related to quantum aspects of gravity. These ideas primarily revolve around aspects of quantum entanglement and quantum information in (semi-classical) gravity. This is an introductory and pedagogical review of Wormholes and their recent applications in Gauge-Gravity duality and related ideas.
For the free massless spin-one and spin-two field theories one may write the action in a form which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality. This is achieved by introducing new potentials through solving the constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation. The price for making electric-magnetic duality invariance manifest through this direct procedure is losing manifest Lorentz invariance. Both theories admit supersymmetric extensions, which make the bosonic fields and their corresponding fermionic partners to be parts of the same geometrical object, a supermultiplet. We present in …
We perform an in-depth analysis of the transformation rules under duality for couplings of theories containing multiple scalars, $p$-form gauge fields, linearized gravitons or $(p,1)$ mixed symmetry tensors. Following a similar reasoning to the derivation of the Buscher rules for string background fields under T-duality, we show that the couplings for all classes of aforementioned multi-field theories transform according to one of two sets of duality rules. These sets comprise the ordinary Buscher rules and their higher counterpart; this is a generic feature of multi-field theories in spacetim…
We consider a free topological model in 5D euclidean flat spacetime, built from two rank-2 tensor fields. Despite the fact that the bulk of the model does not have any particular physical interpretation, on its 4D planar edge nontrivial gauge field theories are recovered, whose features are entirely determined by the gauge and discrete symmetries of the bulk. In particular no 4D dynamics can be obtained without imposing a Time Reversal invariance in the bulk. Remarkably, one of the two possible edge models selected by the Time Reversal symmetries displays a true electromagnetic duality, which …
We derive a manifestly duality-symmetric formulation of the action principle for conformal gravity linearized around Minkowski space-time. The analysis is performed in the Hamiltonian formulation, the fourth-order character of the equations of motion requiring the formal treatment of the three-dimensional metric perturbation and the extrinsic curvature as independent dynamical variables. The constraints are solved in terms of two symmetric potentials that are interpreted as a dual three-dimensional metric and a dual extrinsic curvature. The action principle can be written in terms of these fou…
In this paper, we study codimension two holography in flat spacetimes, based on the idea of the wedge holography. We propose that a region in a $d+1$ dimensional flat spacetime surrounded by two end of the world-branes, which are given by $d$ dimensional hyperbolic spaces, is dual to a conformal field theory (CFT) on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Similarly, we also propose that a $d+1$ dimensional region in the flat spacetime bounded by two $d$ dimensional de Sitter spaces is holographically dual to a CFT on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Our calculations of the partition function, holographic enta…
Many non-relativistic Quantum Field Theories with conserved particle number share a common set of symmetries: time dependent spatial diffeomorphisms acting on the background metric and U(1) invariance acting on the background fields which couple to particle number. Here we use these symmetries to deduce a gravity dual for any such theory in terms of a non-relativistic theory of gravity, a variant of Horava gravity. This duality allows the extension of holography to generic non-relativistic field theories. As Horava gravity is presumed to be a consistent quantum theory, this duality also allows…
We introduce a perturbation $h_{μν}$ onto a background Lifshitz spacetime and examine some of its consequences. In particular, we consider a radially localized perturbation and compute the resulting holographic Green's function to linearized order. At leading order, the Lifshitz Green's function demonstrates suppression of spectral weight at low frequencies, and this feature allows bulk perturbations in the IR to be partially hidden from local boundary probes.
The temperature dependence of quantum Hall conductivities is studied in the context of the AdS/CMT paradigm using a model with a bulk theory consisting of (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell action coupled to a dilaton and an axion, with a negative cosmological constant. We consider a solution which has a Lifshitz like geometry with a dyonic black-brane in the bulk. There is an $Sl(2,R)$ action in the bulk corresponding to electromagnetic duality, which maps between classical solutions, and is broken to $Sl(2,Z)$ by Dirac quantisation of dyons. This bulk $Sl(2,Z)$ action translates to an action…
We propose a holographic duality for a four dimensional WZW model with target manifold $\mathrm{SO}(8)$, coupled to scalar-flat Kähler gravity on an asymptotically flat, four dimensional background known as the Burns metric. The holographic dual is a two dimensional chiral algebra built out of gauged beta-gamma systems with $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ flavor. We test the duality by matching two-point correlators of soft gluon currents with two-point gluon amplitudes, and their leading OPE coefficients with collinear limits of three-point gluon amplitudes.
In this paper, based on the $ AdS_{4}/CFT_{3} $ duality, we have explored the precise connection between the abelian Chern-Simons (CS) Higgs model in ($ 2+1 $) dimensions to that with its dual gravitational counterpart living in one higher dimension. It has been observed that the $ U(1) $ current computed at the boundary of the $ AdS_{4} $ could be expressed as the local function of the vortex solution that has the remarkable structural similarity to that with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) type local expression for the current associated with the Maxwell-CS type vortices in ($ 2+1 $) dimensions. In…
Duality transformations involving compactifications on timelike as well as spacelike circles link M-theory, the 10+1-dimensional strong coupling limit of IIA string theory, to other 11-dimensional theories in signatures 9+2 and 6+5 and to type II string theories in all 10-dimensional signatures. These theories have BPS branes of various world-volume signatures, and here we construct the world-volume theories for these branes, which in each case have 16 supersymmetries. For the generalised D-branes of the various type II string theories, these are always supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with …
We study the supergravity dual of four-dimensional ${\mathcal{N}=1}$ superconformal field theories arising from wrapping M5-branes on a Kähler two-cycle inside a Calabi-Yau threefold. We derive an effective three-dimensional theory living on the cobordism between the infrared and ultraviolet Riemann surfaces, describing the renormalization group flows between AdS$_7$ and AdS$_{5}$ as well as between different AdS$_{5}$ fixed points. The realization of this system as an effective theory is convenient to make connections to known theories, and we show that upon imposing (physical) infrared bound…
We use large N duality to study brane/anti-brane configurations on a class of Calabi-Yau manifolds. With only branes present, the Calabi-Yau manifolds in question give rise to N=2 ADE quiver theories deformed by superpotential terms. We show that the large N duality conjecture of hep-th/0610249 reproduces correctly the known qualitative features of the brane/anti-brane physics. In the supersymmetric case, the gauge theories have Seiberg dualities which are represented as flops in the geometry. Moreover, the holographic dual geometry encodes the whole RG flow of the gauge theory. In the non-sup…
In the reduced phase space of electromagnetism, the generator of duality rotations in the usual Poisson bracket is shown to generate Maxwell's equations in a second, much simpler Poisson bracket. This gives rise to a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian evolution equations in the standard way. The result can be extended to linearized Yang-Mills theory, linearized gravity and massless higher spin gauge fields.
In this note further evidence is collected in support of the claim that the space-time uncertainty principle implies holography, both within the context of Matrix Theory and the framework of the proposed duality between certain conformal field theories and M-theory/string theory on AdS backgrounds.
Celestial holography proposes a duality between the gravitational $\mathcal{S}$-matrix and correlators in a conformal field theory living on the celestial sphere. In this white paper, solicited for the 2022 Snowmass process, we review the motivation from asymptotic symmetries, fundamentals of the proposed holographic dictionary, potential applications to experiment and theory, and some important open questions.
The proposed duality between Vasiliev's supersymmetric higher spin theory on AdS3 and the 't Hooft limit of the 2d superconformal Kazama-Suzuki models is analysed in detail. In particular, we show that the partition functions of the two theories agree in the large N limit.
Known as a symmetry of vacuum Maxwell equations, the electric-magnetic duality can be lifted actually to a symmetry of an action. The Lagrangian of this action is written in terms of two vector potentials, one electric and one magnetic, and while it is manifestly invariant under duality rotations, it is not manifestly Lorentz covariant. This duality symmetry exists also in linearized gravity in four dimensions, and can be lifted off shell too. In $d$ dimensions, the link between linearized gravity and its dual can also be seen from the point of view of a parental action. This is defined by a f…
We show by explicit computation that the recently discovered duality invariance of D=4 linearized gravity fails, already at first self-interacting, cubic, approximation of GR. In contrast, the cubic Yang-Mills correction to Maxwell does admit a simple deformed duality.
The construction of dual theories for linearized gravity in four dimensions is considered. Our approach is based on the parent Lagrangian method previously developed for the massive spin-two case, but now considered for the zero mass case. This leads to a dual theory described in terms of a rank two symmetric tensor, analogous to the usual gravitational field, and an auxiliary antisymmetric field. This theory has an enlarged gauge symmetry, but with an adequate partial gauge fixing it can be reduced to a gauge symmetry similar to the standard one of linearized gravitation. We present examples …
We analyse a simple example of a holographically dual pair in which we topologically twist both theories. The holography is based on the two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Liouville conformal field theory that defines a unitary bulk quantum supergravity theory in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The supersymmetric version of three-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity allows for a topological twist on the boundary and in the bulk. We define the topological bulk supergravity theory in terms of twisted boundary conditions. We corroborate the duality by calculating the chiral configuration…
We study anomalous dimensions of unprotected low twist operators in the four-dimensional $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We construct a class of interpolating functions to approximate the dimensions of the leading twist operators for arbitrary gauge coupling $τ$. The interpolating functions are consistent with previous results on the perturbation theory, holographic computation and full S-duality. We use our interpolating functions to test a recent conjecture by the $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal bootstrap that upper bounds on the dimensions are saturated at one of th…
We discuss a fine-tuning of rather generic three dimensional higher-curvature gravity actions that leads to gauge symmetry enhancement at the linearized level via partial masslessness. Requiring this gauge symmetry to be present also non-linearly reduces such actions to conformal Chern-Simons gravity. We perform a canonical analysis of this theory and construct the gauge generators and associated charges. We provide and classify admissible boundary conditions. The boundary conditions on the conformal equivalence class of the metric render one chirality of the partially massless Weyl gravitons …
The holographic principle in the pp-wave limit proposed in our previous works is further confirmed by studying impurity non-preserving processes which contain a fermionic BMN operator with one scalar and one fermion impurities. We show that the previously proposed duality relation between the matrix elements of the three point interaction Hamiltonian in the holographic string field theory and the OPE coefficients in super Yang-Mills theory holds to the leading order in the large $μ$ limit. Operator mixing is required to obtain the BMN operator of definite conformal dimension which corresponds …
It was recently conjectured that the quantum complexity of a holographic boundary state can be computed by evaluating the gravitational action on a bulk region known as the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We apply this complexity=action duality to evaluate the `complexity of formation' (arXiv:1509.07876, arXiv:1512.04993), i.e., the additional complexity arising in preparing the entangled thermofield double state with two copies of the boundary CFT compared to preparing the individual vacuum states of the two copies. We find that for boundary dimensions $d>2$, the difference in the complexities grows li…
