The propagation invariance of Bessel beams as well as their transversal structure are used to perform a comparative analysis of their effect on cold atoms for four different configurations and combinations thereof. We show that, even at temperatures for which the classical description of the atom center of mass motion is valid, the interchange of momentum, energy and orbital angular momentum between light and atoms yields efficient tools for all-optical trapping, transporting and, in general, manipulating the state of motion of cold atoms.
During the ionization of atoms irradiated by linearly polarized intense laser fields, we find for the first time that the transverse momentum distribution of photoelectrons can be well fitted by a squared zeroth-order Bessel function because of the quantum interference effect of Glory rescattering. The characteristic of the Bessel function is determined by the common angular momentum of a bunch of semiclassical paths termed as Glory trajectories, which are launched with different nonzero initial transverse momenta distributed on a specific circle in the momentum plane and finally deflected to …
In this manuscript, we demonstrate the ability of nonlinear light-atom interactions to produce tunably non-Gaussian, partially self-healing optical modes. Gaussian spatial-mode light tuned near to the atomic resonances in hot rubidium vapor is shown to result in non-Gaussian output mode structures that may be controlled by varying either the input beam power or the temperature of the atomic vapor. We show that the output modes exhibit a degree of self-reconstruction after encountering an obstruction in the beam path. The resultant modes are similar to truncated Bessel-Gauss modes that exhibit …
Using a new result on the integral involving the product of Bessel functions and associated Laguerre polynomials, published in the mathematical literature some time ago, we present an alternative method for calculating discrete-discrete transition form factors for hydrogen-like atoms. For comparison, an overview is also given of two other commonly used methods.
The elastic Rayleigh scattering of twisted light and, in particular, the polarization (transfer) of the scattered photons have been analyzed within the framework of second-order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention was paid hereby to the scattering on three different atomic targets: single atoms, a mesoscopic (small) target, and a macroscopic (large) target, which are all centered with regard to the beam axis. Detailed calculations of the polarization Stokes parameters were performed for C^{5+} ions and for twisted Bessel beams. It is shown that the polariza…
A modular systematic analysis of the feasibility of modifying atomic transition rates by tailoring the electromagnetic field of an external coherent light source is presented. The formalism considers both the center of mass and internal degrees of freedom of the atom, and all properties of the field: frequency, angular spectrum, and polarization. General features of recoil effects for internal forbidden transitions are discussed. A comparative analysis of different structured light sources is explicitly worked out. It includes spherical waves, Gaussian beams, Laguerre-Gaussian beams, and propa…
The simple method outlined in our earlier paper [B.Padhy, Orissa Journal of Physics, vol.19, No.1, p.1, February 2012] has been utilized here for analytic evaluation of three different five-electron atomic integrals with integrands involving products of s Slater-type orbitals and exponentially correlated functions of the form $r_{ij} exp(-λ_{ij} r_{ij})$. Only products of those $r_{ij}$'s which do not form a closed loop by themselves, are considered.
The next-to-leading order black-body radiation(BBR) shift to atomic energy-levels, namely $ (Zα)^2αT^2/m $ correction, was studied by using the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics(NRQED). We also estimate the one-loop contribution of quadrupole and the two-loop contributions of BBR-shift of the thermal(real) photon. These corrections have not been investigated before. The order of magnitude BBR-shift indicates the one-loop contribution of quadrupole is stronger than the previous result. And the two-loop contribution of BBR-shift of the thermal(real) photon is tiny, but this next-to-leading…
The sensitivity of light and matter-wave interferometers to rotations is based on the Sagnac effect and increases with the area enclosed by the interferometer. In the case of light, the latter can be enlarged by forming multiple fibre loops, whereas the equivalent for matter-wave interferometers remains an experimental challenge. We present a concept for a multi-loop atom interferometer with a scalable area formed by light pulses. Our method will offer sensitivities as high as $2\cdot10^{-11}$ rad/s at 1 s in combination with the respective long-term stability as required for Earth rotation mo…
Many atomic processes result in the emission of photons. Analysis of the properties of emitted photons, such as energy and angular distribution as well as polarization, is regarded as a powerful tool for gaining more insight into the physics of corresponding processes. Another characteristic of light is the projection of its angular momentum upon propagation direction. This property has attracted a special attention over the last decades due to studies of twisted (or vortex) light beams. Measurements being sensitive to this projection may provide valuable information about the role of angular …

The one-loop correction and two-loop contribution to black-body radiation (BBR) shift are restudied. The S-matrix approach and nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED) are adopted in finite temperature case. The relativistic correction to one-loop BBR-shift has a $(Zα)^{2}αT^2/m$-order contribution. In the two-loop case, the pure thermal (real) photon part is too tiny to be detected; while the corrections induced by the thermal and virtual mixing diagram are at $(Zα)^{2}α^2 T^2/m$ order. We calculate the relativistic correction to one-loop BBR-shift in the ground state of hydrogen and i…
Atomic coherence effects arising from coherent light-atom interaction are conventionally known to be governed by quantum interference and optical pumping mechanisms. However, anisotropic nonlinear response driven by optical field involves another fundamental effect arising from closed-loop multiphoton transitions. This closed-loop phase dictates the tensorial structure of the nonlinear susceptibility as it governs the principal coordinate system in determining, whether the light field will either compete or cooperate with the external magnetic field stimulus. Such a treatment provides deeper u…

Recent studies have confirmed the coupling of optical vortices, such as Laguerre-Gaussian and Bessel-Gaussian modes, to quadrupole-active atomic transitions. This interaction has been shown to be enhanced considerably in the case of Laguerre-Gaussian beams due to the gradient coupling, particularly in the case of a relatively large winding number. Here we consider the trapping and the dynamics of atoms in the optical quadrupole potential generated by two co-axial counter-propagating optical vortex beams. We focus on the atomic transition $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5^2D_{5/2}$ in Cs which is a dipo…

We theoretically study a scheme to develop an atomic based MW interferometry using the Rydberg states in Rb. Unlike the traditional MW interferometry, this scheme is not based upon the electrical circuits, hence the sensitivity of the phase and the amplitude/strength of the MW field is not limited by the Nyquist thermal noise. Further this system has great advantage due to its very high bandwidth, ranging from radio frequency (RF), micro wave (MW) to terahertz regime. In addition, this is \textbf{orders of magnitude} more sensitive to field strength as compared to the prior demonstrations on t…
We demonstrate a proof-of-principle of direct Earth gravity gradient measurement with an atom interferometer-based gravity gradiomter using a single proof mass of cold 87 rubidium atoms. The atomic gradiometer is implemented in the so-called double-loop configuration, hence providing a direct gravity gradient dependent phase shift insensitive do DC acceleration and constant rotation rate. The atom interferometer (AI) can be either operated as a gravimeter or a gradiomter by simply adding an extra Raman $π$-pulse. We demonstrate gravity gradient measurements first using a vibration isolation pl…
We have investigated the benefits of spin squeezed states for clocks operated with typical Brownian frequency noise-limited laser sources. Based on an analytic model of the closed servo-loop of an optical atomic clock, we can give quantitative predictions on the optimal clock stability for a given dead time and laser noise. Our analytic predictions are in very good agreement with numerical simulations of the closed servo-loop. We find that for usual cyclic Ramsey interrogation of single atomic ensembles with dead time, even with the current most stable lasers spin squeezing can only improve th…

We propose and demonstrate a method for calibrating atomic trajectories in a large-area dual-atom-interferometer gyroscope. The atom trajectories are monitored by modulating and delaying the Raman transition, and they are precisely calibrated by controlling the laser orientation and the bias magnetic field. To improve the immunity to the gravity effect and the common phase noise, the symmetry and the overlapping of two large-area atomic interference loops are optimized by calibrating the atomic trajectories and by aligning the Raman-laser orientations. The dual-atom-interferometer gyroscope is…
Miniaturized atomic magnetometers, particularly spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic magnetometers, have been emerging in clinical imaging applications such magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography. Miniaturization, portability, and low cost are primary development targets for bio-magnetic imaging technologies, as well as high sensitivity and spatial and time resolution. In this paper, we propose a low-cost solution for a bio-magnetic imaging system based on atomic magnetometers, in which one laser source is used for a multi-channel atomic magnetometer sensor array. A single-seed, module-based compact laser system is demonstrated on a transportable $^{87}\text{Rb}$-based high-precision atomic gravimeter. All the required laser frequencies for the atom interferometry are provided by free-space acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) and resonant electro-optic phase modulators (EOMs). The optical phase-locked loop between the two optical paths derived from the same laser provides an easy frequency manipulation between two laser frequencies separated by the hyperfine frequency of 6.835 GHz using an AOM and an EOM, respectively. Our scheme avoids parasite Raman trans…
