Any bipartite quantum state has quasi-probability representations in terms of separable states. For entangled states these quasi-probabilities necessarily exhibit negativities. Based on the general structure of composite quantum states, one may reconstruct such quasi-propabilities from experimental data. Because of ambiguity, the quasi-probabilities obtained by the bare reconstruction are insufficient to identify entanglement. An optimization procedure is introduced to derive quasi-probabilities with a minimal amount of negativity. Negativities of optimized quasi-probabilities unambiguously prove entanglement, their positivity proves separability.
Nonlocality without entanglement(NLWE) is a nonlocal phenomenon that occurs in quantum state discrimination of multipartite separable states. In the discrimination of orthogonal separable states, the term NLWE is used when the quantum states cannot be discriminated perfectly by local operations and classical communication. In this case, the occurrence of NLWE is independent of nonzero prior probabilities of quantum states being prepared. Recently, it has been found that the occurrence of NLWE can depend on nonzero prior probabilities in minimum-error discrimination of nonorthogonal separable s…

Numerous non-classicality criteria based on the probabilities of experimental photocount or theoretical photon-number distributions are derived using several approaches. Relations among the derived criteria are revealed and the fundamental criteria are identified. They are grouped into parametric systems that allow the analysis of the non-classicality from different points of view ('local' non-classicality, pairwise character of photon correlations, etc.). Considering their structure, the criteria may be divided into groups that differ in the power to resolve the non-classicality. Quantificati…
We analyze optimal schemes and also propose some practical schemes for the nonlocal conversion from two shared Bell pairs to four-qubit entangled states in optical quantum networks. In the analysis, we consider two-qubit operations as nonlocal operations and minimize the number of access to ancillary qubits as possible. First, we consider two-qubit unitary operations without using ancillary qubits and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for convertible states. Second, we consider nonlocal optical systems composed of passive linear optics and postselection. For the passive linear optica…

The standard approach to realize a quantum repeater relies upon probabilistic but heralded entangled state manipulations and the storage of quantum states while waiting for successful events. In the literature on this class of repeaters, calculating repeater rates has typically depended on approximations assuming sufficiently small probabilities. Here we propose an exact and systematic approach including an algorithm based on Markov chain theory to compute the average waiting time (and hence the transmission rates) of quantum repeaters with arbitrary numbers of links. For up to four repeater s…
We introduce an experimental test for ruling out classical explanations for the statistics obtained when measuring arbitrary observables at arbitrary times using individual detectors. This test requires some trust in the measurements, represented by a few natural assumptions on the detectors. In quantum theory, the considered scenarios are well captured by von Neumann measurements. These can be described naturally in terms of the Keldysh quasi-probability distribution (KQPD), and the imprecision and backaction exerted by the measurement apparatus. We find that classical descriptions can be rul…
Entanglement of quasiclassical (coherent) states of two harmonic oscillators leads to striking quantum effects and is useful for quantum technologies. These effects and applications are closely related to nonlocal correlations inherent in these states, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities. With previous frameworks, this violation is limited by the size of the system, which does not approach the maximum even when the amount of entanglement approaches its maximum. Here we propose a new version of Bell correlation operators, with which a nearly maximal violation can be obtained as lon…
The time evolution of probability density, the ground-state fidelity and the entanglement of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a 1D double well potential, are studied through the two mode approximation. We found that the behaviour of the quantum return probability shows three distinct regions. The first region is characterized by a complete miscibility, and correlated tunneling of bosons and fermion. The second region is characterized by correlated sequential tunneling and in the last region we found an increase in the tunneling frequency of the two species. We found through the Von Neumann entropy, tha…
Measurements in the quantum domain can exceed classical notions. This concerns fundamental questions about the nature of the measurement process itself, as well as applications, such as their function as building blocks of quantum information processing protocols. In this paper we explore the notion of entanglement for detection devices in theory and experiment. A method is devised that allows one to determine nonlocal quantum coherence of positive-operator-valued measures via negative contributions in a joint distribution that fully describes the measurement apparatus under study. This approa…
We discuss an approach to determine averages of the work, dissipated heat and variation of internal energy of an open quantum system driven by an external classical field. These quantities are measured by coupling the quantum system to a quantum detector at different times. This approach allows us to preserve the full quantum features of the evolution. From the measured phase, we are able to obtain a quasi-characteristic function and a quasi-probability density function for the corresponding observables. Despite the fact that these quasi-probability density functions are not the results of dir…
We report several witness-parameterized families of bound-entangled probabilities. Two pertain to the $d=3$ (two-qutrit) and a third to the $d=4$ (two-ququart) subsets analyzed by Hiesmayr and L{ö}ffler of "magic" simplices of Bell states. The Hilbert-Schmidt probabilities of positive-partial-transpose (PPT) states--within which we search for bound-entangled states--are $\frac{8 π}{27 \sqrt{3}} \approx 0.537422$ ($d=3$) and $\frac{1}{2}+\frac{\log \left(2-\sqrt{3}\right)}{8 \sqrt{3}} \approx 0.404957$ ($d=4$). We obtain bound-entangled probabilities of $-\frac{4}{9}+\frac{4 π}{27 \sqrt{3}}+\fr…
We discuss the role of contextuality within quantum fluctuation theorems, in the light of a recent no-go result by Perarnau \emph{et al}. We show that any fluctuation theorem reproducing the two-point-measurement scheme for classical states either admits a notion of work quasi-probability or fails to describe protocols exhibiting contextuality. Conversely, we describe a protocol that smoothly interpolates between the two-point measurement work distribution for projective measurements and Allahverdyan's work quasi-probability for weak measurements, and show that the negativity of the latter is …
