We investigate general braneworld models, with a non-minimally coupled phantom bulk field and arbitrary brane and bulk matter contents. We show that the effective dark energy of the brane-universe acquires a dynamical nature, as a result of the non-minimal coupling which provides a mechanism for an indirect "bulk-brane interaction" through gravity. For late-time cosmological evolution and without resorting to special ansatzes or to specific areas of the parameter space, we show that the -1-crossing of its equation-of-state parameter is general and can be easily achieved. As an example we provide a simple, but sufficiently general, approximate analytical solution, that presents the crossing behavior.
We investigate a simple braneworld model in which the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant, but the effective dark energy is phantom-like because of extra-dimensional gravity effects. Modified gravity screens the cosmological constant Lambda, allowing for a larger Lambda. In practice, observations do not favour any significant screening. We use supernova data, the cosmic microwave background shift parameter, and the baryon oscillation peak in the galaxy distribution to constrain the model. We find the mean value of Omega_m with 68% confidence limits, and an upper…
The 6D braneworld with the phantom-like bulk scalar field is considered. We demonstrate pure gravitational localization of scalar field zero modes on the brane.
We investigate canonical, phantom and quintom models, with the various fields being non-minimally coupled to gravity, in the framework of holographic dark energy. We classify them and we discuss their cosmological implications. In particular, we examine the present value of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter and the crossing through the phantom divide, and we extract the conditions for a future cosmological singularity. The combined scenarios are in agreement with observations and reveal interesting cosmological behaviors.
Linear stability of braneworld models constructed with multi-scalar fields is very different from that of single-scalar field models. It is well known that both the tensor and scalar perturbation equations of the later can always be written as a supersymmetric Schrödinger equation, so it can be shown that the perturbations are stable at linear level. However, in general it is not true for multi-scalar field models and especially there is no effective method to deal with the stability problem of the scalar perturbations for braneworld models constructed with non-minimally coupled multi-scalar f…
A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.
In this work we study a scenario with a warped 5D smooth braneworld with 4D Minkowski geometry builded from bulk scalar matter non-minimally coupled to gravity with an additional Gauss-Bonnet term. We present exact solutions for the full braneworld configuration in contrast to previous results where only approximate solutions were constructed due to the highly non-linear character of the relevant differential equations. These solutions allow us to study the necessary conditions for the finiteness of the 4D Planck mass and additionally, enables us to perform a more rigorous analysis of 4D gravi…
The discrete quantum geometric effects play an important role in dynamical evolution in the loop quantum cosmology. These effects which are significant at the high energies lead to the quadratic energy density modifications to the Friedmann equation, as in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenarios but with a negative sign. We investigate the scalar field dynamics in this scenario and show the existence of a phase of super-inflation independent of the inverse scale factor modifications as found earlier. In this regime the scalar field mimics the dynamics of a phantom field and vice versa. We als…
We study cosmological dynamics and late-time evolution of an extended induced gravity braneworld scenario. In this scenario, curvature effects are taken into account via the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action and there is also a Chaplygin gas component on the brane. We show that this model mimics an effective phantom behavior in a relatively wider range of redshifts than previously formulated models. It also provides a natural framework for smooth crossing of the phantom-divide line due to presence of the Chaplygin gas component on the brane. We confront the model with observational data fro…
We introduce new 6D standing wave braneworld model generated by gravity coupled to a phantom-like scalar field and investigate the problem of pure gravitational localization of matter fields. We show that in the case of increasing warp factor spin 0, 1, 1/2 and 2 fields are localized on the brane.
We investigate the problem of pure gravitational localization of matter fields within the 5D standing wave braneworld generated by gravity coupled to a phantom-like scalar field. We show that in the case of increasing warp factor there exist normalizable zero modes of spin-0, -1/2, -1, and -2 fields on the brane.
In this paper we generalize our previous model (arXiv: 1705.09331), on a hidden conformal symmetry of smooth braneworld scenarios, to the case with two real scalar fields non-minimally coupled to gravity. The gauge condition reduces the action of the system to the action were gravity minimally couples to one of the scalar fields, plus a cosmological constant. We show that, depending on the internal symmetry of the scalar fields, the two possibilities, $SO(2)$ or $SO(1,1)$, emerge. In the $SO(2)$ case we get a ghost-like scalar field action, which can describe two models -- Standing Wave and Si…
We consider warped five-dimensional thick braneworlds with four-dimensional Poincaré invariance originated from bulk scalar matter non-minimally coupled to gravity plus a Gauss-Bonnet term. The background field equations as well as the perturbed equations are investigated. A relationship between 4D and 5D Planck masses is studied in general terms. By imposing finiteness of the 4D Planck mass and regularity of the geometry, the localization properties of the tensor modes of the perturbed geometry are analyzed to first order, for a wide class of solutions. In order to explore the gravity localiz…
We consider a braneworld model with bulk-brane energy exchange. This allows for crossing of the w=-1 phantom divide line without introducing phantom energy with quantum instabilities. We use the latest SnIa data included in the Gold06 dataset to provide an estimate of the preferred parameter values of this braneworld model. We use three fitting approaches which provide best fit parameter values and hint towards a bulk energy component that behaves like relativistic matter which is propagating in the bulk and is moving at a speed v along the fifth dimension, while the bulk-brane energy exchange…
In this work, we propose a standing wave braneworld based on Lyra geometry scenario. The Lyra displacement vector provides a modification in Einstein equations which can be interpreted as a noninteracting phantom scalar. From the Einstein's equation in Lyra manifold, a 5D standing wave braneworld is constructed in the presence of a cosmological constant. Unlike other standing wave solutions presented in the literature, no matter field is necessary to obtain these new solutions. We analyze the properties of the scalar, gauge vector and fermionic fields in this model, highlighting the relevance …
Motivated by our recent work \cite{set1}, we generalize this work to the interacting non-flat case. Therefore in this paper we deal with canonical, phantom and quintom models, with the various fields being non-minimally coupled to gravity, within the framework of interacting holographic dark energy. We employ the holographic model of interacting dark energy to obtain the equation of state for the holographic energy density in non-flat (closed) universe enclosed by the event horizon measured from the sphere of horizon named $L$.
We constructed a six-dimensional version of the standing wave model with an anisotropic 4-brane generated by a phantom-like scalar field. The model represents a braneworld where the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The proposed geometry of the brane and its transverse manifold is non-static, unlike the majority of braneworld models presented in the literature. Furthermore, we have shown that the zero-mode scalar field is localized around the brane. While in the string-like defect the scalar field is lo…
We discuss the backreaction of a massless, minimally coupled, quantized scalar field on a thick, two-dimensional de Sitter (dS) brane as an extension of our previous work. We show that a finite brane thickness naturally regularizes the backreaction on the brane. The quantum backreaction exhibits a quadratic divergence in the thin wall limit. We also give a theoretical bound on the brane thickness, in terms of the brane self-consistency of the quantum corrected Einstein equation, namely the requirement that the size of the backreaction should be smaller than that of the background stress-energy…
We study a smooth cosmological solution within a generalized 5D standing wave braneworld modeled by gravity and a phantom scalar field. In this model the 3-brane is anisotropically warped along its spatial dimensions and contains a novel time-dependent scale factor that multiplies the anisotropic spatial interval of the 5D metric, a fact that allows us to study cosmological effects. By explicitly solving the bulk field equations we found a natural mechanism which isotropizes the braneworld for a wide class of natural initial conditions. We are able to give a physical interpretation of the anis…
It is shown that any spatially flat and isotropic universe undergoing accelerated expansion driven by a self-interacting scalar field can be directly related to a contracting, decelerating cosmology. The duality is made manifest by expressing the scale factor and Hubble parameter as functions of the scalar field and simultaneously interchanging these two quantities. The decelerating universe can be twinned with a cosmology sourced by a phantom scalar field by inverting the scale factor and leaving the Hubble parameter invariant. The accelerating model can be related to the same phantom univers…
We investigate evolutional paths of an extended quintessence with a non-minimally coupled phantom scalar field $ψ$ to the Ricci curvature. The dynamical system methods are used to investigate typical regimes of dynamics at the late time. We demonstrate that there are two generic types of evolutional scenarios which approach the attractor (a focus or a node type critical point) in the phase space: the quasi-oscillatory and monotonic trajectories approach to the attractor which represents the FRW model with the cosmological constant. We demonstrate that dynamical system admits invariant two-dime…
We obtain a closed system of equations for scalar perturbations in a multi-component braneworld. Our braneworld possesses a phantom-like equation of state at late times, $w_{\rm eff} < -1$, but no big-rip future singularity. In addition to matter and radiation, the braneworld possesses a new effective degree of freedom - the 'Weyl fluid' or 'dark radiation'. Setting initial conditions on super-Hubble spatial scales at the epoch of radiation domination, we evolve perturbations of radiation, pressureless matter and the Weyl fluid until the present epoch. We observe a gradual decrease in the ampl…
In [Schmidt PRD 80 123003 (2009)], the author suggested that dynamical dark energy (DDE) propagating on the phantom brane could mimick $Λ$CDM. Schmidt went on to derive a phenomenological expression for $ρ_{\rm DE}$ which could achieve this. We demonstrate that while Schmidt's central premise is correct, the expression for $ρ_{\rm DE}$ derived in Schmidt (2009) is flawed. We derive the correct expression for $ρ_{\rm DE}$ which leads to $Λ$CDM-like expansion on the phantom brane. We also show that DDE on the brane can be associated with a Quintessence field and derive a closed form expression f…
Motivated by the recent interest in phantom fields as candidates for the dark energy component, we investigate the consequences of the phantom field when is minimally coupled to gravity. In particular, the necessary (but insufficient) conditions for the acceleration and superacceleration of the universe are obtained when the non-minimal coupling term is taken into account. Furthermore, the necessary condition for the cosmic acceleration is derived when the phantom field is non-minimally coupled to gravity and baryonic matter is included.
We construct a quintom dark energy model with two non-minimally coupled scalar fields, one quintessence and the other phantom field, confined on the warped DGP brane. We study some important issues such as phantom divide line crossing, existence of the bouncing solutions and the stability of the solutions in this framework. We show that this model accounts for crossing of the phantom divide line and realization of the bouncing solutions. This model allows for stability of the solutions in separate regions of the $ω$-$ω'$ phase-plane.
We study cosmological inflation on a warped DGP braneworld where inflaton field is non-minimally coupled to induced gravity on the brane. We present a detailed calculation of the perturbations and inflation parameters both in Jordan and Einstein frame. We analyze the parameters space of the model fully to justify about the viability of the model in confrontation with recent observational data. We compare the results obtained in these two frames also in order to judge which frame gives more acceptable results in comparison with observational data.

Five-dimensional braneworld cosmology with deSitter (inflationary) brane universe induced by classical and quantum matter is discussed. It is shown that negative energy phantom field with quantum CFT supports the creation of deSitter universe. On the same time, pure phantom or dust with quantum effects, or Chaplygin gas with quantum effects may naturally lead to the occurence of Anti-deSitter brane universe but not deSitter one. It is also interesting that unlike to four-dimensional gravity, for phantom with (or without) quantum contribution the standard cosmological energy conditions may be e…
We apply bulk holographic dark energy in general braneworld models with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term and a perfect fluid on the brane. Without making any additional assumptions we extract the Friedmann equation on the physical brane and we show that a $ρ$-$ρ_Λ$ coupling arises naturally by the full 5D dynamics. The low-energy (late-time) evolution reveals that the effective 4D holographic dark energy behaves as ``quintom'', that is it crosses the phantom divide $w=-1$ during the evolution. In particular, the Gauss-Bonnet contribution decreases the present value o…
We show that a four-dimensional equation of state for a cosmological constant term arises from a perfect fluid in the bulk in the context of a gravity model where the scalar curvature is non-minimally coupled to the perfect fluid Lagrangian density. The four-dimensional theory is fully determined from the induced equations on the brane, subject to the boundary conditions derived across the brane.
We study cosmological dynamics of a canonical bulk scalar field in the DGP setup within a superpotential approach. We show that the normal branch of this DGP-inspired model realizes a late-time de Sitter expansion on the brane. We extend this study to the case that the bulk contains a phantom scalar field. Our detailed study in the supergravity-style analysis reveals some yet unexplored aspects of cosmological dynamics of bulk scalar field in the normal DGP setup. Some clarifying examples along with numerical analysis of the model parameter space are presented in each case.
The paper deals with dynamical system analysis of a coupled scalar field in the Randall-Sundrum(RS)2 brane world. The late time attractor describes the final state of the cosmic evolution. In RS2 based phantom model there is no late-time attractor and consequently there is uncertainty in cosmic evolution. In this paper, we have shown that it is possible to get late-time attractor when gravity is coupled to scalar field. Finally, in order to predict the final evolution of the universe, we have also studied classical stability of the model. It is found that there are late time attractors which a…
We present a consistent derivation of the recently proposed 5D anisotropic standing wave braneworld generated by gravity coupled to a phantom-like scalar field. We explicitly solve the corresponding junction conditions, a fact that enables us to give a physical interpretation to the anisotropic energy-momentum tensor components on the brane. So matter on the brane represents an oscillating fluid which emits anisotropic waves into the bulk. We also analyze the Sturm-Liouville problem associated to the correct localization condition of the transverse to the brane metric and scalar fields. It is …
We apply the bulk holographic dark energy in general 5D two-brane models. We extract the Friedmann equation on the physical brane and we show that in the general moving-brane case the effective 4D holographic dark energy behaves as a quintom for a large parameter-space area of a simple solution subclass. We find that $w_Λ$ was larger than -1 in the past while its present value is $w_{Λ_0}\approx-1.05$, and the phantom bound $w_Λ=-1$ was crossed at $z_{p}\approx0.41$, a result in agreement with observations. Such a behavior arises naturally, without the inclusion of special fields or potential …
In this work we develop the patch formalism, an approach providing a very simple and compact description of braneworld-motivated cosmologies with nonstandard effective Friedmann equations. In particular, the Hubble parameter is assumed to depend on some power of the brane energy density, H^2 \propto ρ^q. The high-energy limit of Randall-Sundrum (q=2) and Gauss-Bonnet (q=2/3) braneworlds are considered, during an accelerating era triggered by a single ordinary or tachyonic scalar field. The inflationary dynamics, solutions, and spectra are provided. Using the latest results from WMAP and other …
We review a viable alternative scenario of the inflationary universe in the context of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworld. In this scenario, the dynamics of a 5-dimensional scalar field, which we call a bulk scalar field, plays the central role. Focusing on the second (single-brane) RS model, we discuss braneworld inflation driven by a bulk scalar field without introducing an inflaton on the brane. As a toy model, for the bulk scalar field, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar field in the 5-dimensional spacetime, and look for a perturbative solution of the field equation in the ant…
The quest of deciphering the true nature of dark energy has proven to be one of the most exciting in recent times in cosmology. Various ideas have been put forward in this regard besides the usual cosmological constant approach, ranging from scalar field based models like Quintessence and Phantom dark energy to various modified gravity approaches as well. A very interesting idea then is to consider scalar field dark energy models in quantum gravitationally corrected cosmologies with the RS-II Braneworld being one of the most well known in this regard. So in this work, we consider RS-II Branewo…
We construct a DGP inspired braneworld scenario where a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the induced Ricci curvature is present on the brane. We show that this model allows for an embedding of the standard Friedmann cosmology in the sense that the cosmological evolution of the background metric on the brane can be described by the standard Friedmann equation. The relation between our framework and the dark-energy formalism is explored.
The dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field in the expanding universe is discussed with special reference to phantom cosmology. The evolution of the universe with a phantom field vis-a-vis a quintessence field is compared. Phantom cosmologies are found to have two special features i) occurrence of a singularity where the scale factor, the energy density and Ricci curvature scalar diverge to infinity. This singularity occurs at a finite time, depending on w during cosmic evolution, ii) degeneracy in the determination of w(z_m) for a particular transition redshift z_m which seems to impart …
We establish a correspondence between a conformally invariant complex scalar field action (with a conformal self-interaction potential) and the action of a phantom scalar field minimally coupled to gravity (with a cosmological constant). In this correspondence, the module of the complex scalar field is used to relate conformally the metrics of both systems while its phase is identified with the phantom scalar field. At the level of the equations, the correspondence allows to map solution of the conformally non-linear Klein-Gordon equation with vanishing energy-momentum tensor to solution of a …
In the context of averaged cosmologies, the effective equations can be written in the form of "regional" Friedmannian equations with additional sources arising from the so-called backreaction of inhomogeneities. We propose a mean field description of this backreaction in terms of a regionally homogeneous scalar field: this provides a physical motivation to the phenomenological scalar fields generically called quintessence fields. We explicitly reconstruct the potential of the scalar field for a one-parameter family of scaling solutions to the backreaction problem, showing that it entails most …
Localization of a spin-$1/2$ fermion on the braneworld is an important and interesting problem. It is well known that a five-dimensional free massless fermion $Ψ$ minimally coupled to gravity cannot be localized on the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. In order to trap such a fermion, the coupling between the fermion and bulk scalar fields should be introduced. In this paper, localization and quasilocalization of a bulk fermion on the thick braneworld generated by two scalar fields (a kink scalar $ϕ$ and a dilaton scalar $π$) are investigated. Two types of couplings between the fermion and two scala…
A six dimensional standing-wave braneworld model has been constructed. It consists in an anisotropic 4-brane generated by standing gravitational waves whose source is normal matter. In this model the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The bulk geometry is non-static, unlike most of the braneworld models in the literature. The principal feature of this model is the fact that the source is not a phantom like scalar field, as the original standing-wave model that was proposed in five dimensions and its six …
Six dimensional bulk spacetimes with 3-- and 4--branes are constructed using certain non--conventional bulk scalars as sources. In particular, we investigate the consequences of having the phantom (negative kinetic energy) and the Brans--Dicke scalar in the bulk while obtaining such solutions. We find geometries with 4--branes with a compact on--brane dimension (hybrid compactification) which may be assumed to be small in order to realize a 3--brane world. On the other hand, we also construct, with similar sources, bulk spacetimes where a 3--brane is located at a conical singularity. Furthermo…
The bouncing cosmology provides a successful solution of the cosmological singularity problem. In this paper, we study the bouncing behavior of a single scalar field model with tachyon field non-minimally coupled to itself, its derivative and to the curvature. By utilizing the numerical calculations we will show that the bouncing solution can appear in the universe dominated by such a quintom matter with equation of state crossing the phantom divide line. We also investigate the classical stability of our model using the phase velocity of the homogeneous perturbations of the tachyon scalar fie…
Properties of Braneworld models of dark energy are reviewed. Braneworld models admit the following interesting possibilities: (i) The effective equation of state can be w < -1 as well as w > -1. In the former case the expansion of the universe is well behaved at all times and the universe does not run into a future `Big Rip' singularity which is usually encountered by Phantom models. (ii) For a class of Braneworld models the acceleration of the universe can be a transient phenomenon. In this case the current acceleration of the universe is sandwiched between two matter dominated epochs. Such a…
We construct a DGP inspired braneworld scenario where a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the induced Ricci curvature is present on the brane. First we investigate the status of gravitational potential with non-minimal coupling and observational constraints on this non-minimal model. Then we further deepen the idea of embedding of FRW cosmology in this non-minimal setup. Cosmological implications of this scenario are examined with details and the quintessence and late-time expansion of the universe within this framework are examined. Some observational constraints imposed on this non-minim…
Observations exploring the contemporary cosmic acceleration have sparked interest in dark energy models possessing equations of state with w < -1. We review how the cosmic expansion history of a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model with a standard brane cosmological constant can mimic that of ordinary 4-dimensional gravity with w < -1 "phantom" dark energy for observationally relevant redshifts. We reinterpret the effective phantom nature of the dark energy as arising from dynamical-screening of the brane cosmological constant in DGP. This unusual variety of expansion history is thus…

We consider the Chiral cosmological model consisting of two scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity. In the context of a Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) space-time, and for massless fields in the presence of a cosmological constant, we present the general solution of the field equations. The minisuperspace configuration that possesses maximal symmetry leads to scenarios which - depending on the admissible value of the parameters - correspond to a quintessence, quintom or phantom case. The canonical quantization of the model retrieves this distinction as different families of…
Recently, there has been quite a lot of interest in static, spherical wormhole spacetimes and the question of their stability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. The consideration of linearized perturbations usually leads to a master wave equation with effective potential which can then be analyzed using standard tools from quantum mechanics. However, in the wormhole case, particular care must be taken with the gauge conditions when formulating the master equation. A poor coordinate choice, based for example on fixing the areal radial coordinate, may lead to singularities at the thro…
Super-exponential warp factors have been proposed in the context of two-brane models to solve the gauge hierarchy problem of scales by using a compactification scale of the same order of the fundamental Planck scale, completely eliminating the hierarchy between the electroweak and the Planck scales. However, most of the so far studied families of braneworlds with super-exponential warp factors do not localize 4D gravity when one of the branes is sent to infinity. Recently a braneworld model generated by a canonical scalar field $ϕ$ minimally coupled to 5D gravity with a bulk cosmological const…
We investigate quintessence and phantom dark energy scenarios, in which the scalar fields evolve in nearly flat potentials and are non-minimally coupled to gravity. We show that all such models converge to a common behavior and we provide the corresponding approximate analytical expressions for $w(Ω_ϕ)$ and $w(a)$. We find that non-minimal coupling leads to richer cosmological behavior comparing to its minimal counterpart. In addition, comparison with Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and latest Supernovae data reveals that agreement can be established more easily and with less strict constraints on…
We consider a procedure of elimination of cosmological singularities similar to that suggested in the recent paper by Simpson and Visser for the construction of regular black holes. It is shown that by imposing a non-singular cosmological evolution with a bounce in a flat Friedmann universe filled with a minimally coupled scalar field, we obtain a transition between the standard scalar field and its phantom counterpart. In this case, the potential of the scalar field has a non-analyticity of the cusp type. This result is also readily reproduced in the case of an anisotropic Bianchi I universe.…
Non-minimally coupled scalar field models are well-known for providing interesting cosmological features. These include a late time dark energy behavior, a phantom dark energy evolution without singularity, an early time inflationary universe, scaling solutions, convergence to the standard $Λ$CDM, etc. While the usual stability analysis helps us determine the evolution of a model geometrically, bifurcation theory allows us to precisely locate the parameters' values describing the global dynamics without a fine-tuning of initial conditions. Using the center manifold theory and bifurcation analy…
We extend the idea of mimetic gravity to a Randall-Sundrum II braneworld model. As for the 4-dimensional mimetic gravity, we isolate the conformal degree of freedom of 5-dimensional gravity in a covariant manner. We assume the bulk metric to be made up of a non-dynamical scalar field $Φ$ and an auxiliary metric $\tilde{\cal{G}}_{AB}$ so that ${\cal{G}}_{AB}= \tilde{\cal{G}}^{CD}\,Φ_{,C}\,Φ_{,D}\,\tilde{\cal{G}}_{AB}$ where $A, B, ...$ are the bulk spacetime indices. Then we show that the induced conformal degree of freedom on the brane as an induced scalar field, plays the role of a mimetic fi…
We investigate the stability of the extra dimensions in a warped, codimension two braneworld that is based upon an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a non-vanishing scalar field potential. The braneworld solution has two 3-branes, which are located at the positions of the conical singularities. For this type of brane solution the relative positions of the branes (the shape modulus) is determined via the tension-deficit relations, if the brane tensions are fixed. However, the volume of the extra dimensions (the volume modulus) is not fixed in the context of the classical theory, implying we …
There is accumulating observational evidence (based on SnIa data) that the dark energy equation of state parameter $w$ may be evolving with time and crossing the phantom divide barrier $w=-1$ at recent times. The confirmation of these indications by future data would indicate that minimally coupled quintessence can not reproduce the observed expansion rate $H(z)$ for any scalar field potential. Here we explicitly demonstrate that scalar tensor theories of gravity (extended quintessence) can predict crossing of the phantom divide barrier. We reconstruct phenomenologically viable scalar-tensor p…
We study quintessence and phantom field theory models based on linear-negative potentials of the form $V(ϕ)=s ϕ$. We investigate the predicted redshift dependence of the equation of state parameter $w(z$ for a wide range of slopes $s$ in both quintessence and phantom models. We use the gold dataset of 157 SnIa and place constraints on the allowed range of slopes $s$. We find $s=0\pm 1.6$ for quintessence and $s=\pm 0.7\pm 1$ for phantom models (the range is at the $2σ$ level and the units of $s$ are in $\sqrt{3}M_p H_0^2\simeq 10^{-38}eV^3$ where $M_p$ is the Planck mass). In both cases the be…
