We consider a braneworld model with bulk-brane energy exchange. This allows for crossing of the w=-1 phantom divide line without introducing phantom energy with quantum instabilities. We use the latest SnIa data included in the Gold06 dataset to provide an estimate of the preferred parameter values of this braneworld model. We use three fitting approaches which provide best fit parameter values and hint towards a bulk energy component that behaves like relativistic matter which is propagating in the bulk and is moving at a speed v along the fifth dimension, while the bulk-brane energy exchange component corresponds to negative pressure and signifies energy flowing from the bulk into the brane. We find that the best fit effective equation of state parameter $w_{eff}$ marginally crosses the phantom divide line w=-1. Thus, we have demonstrated both the ability of this class of braneworld models to provide crossing of the phantom divide and also that cosmological data hint towards natural values for the model parameters.
We discuss the cosmological evolution of a 3-brane Universe in the presence of energy influx from the bulk. We show that this influx can lead to accelerated expansion on the brane, depending on the equations of state of the bulk and brane matter. The absorption of non-relativistic bulk matter by the brane at an increasing rate leads to a small positive acceleration parameter during the era of matter domination on the brane. On the other hand, the brane expansion remains decelerating during radiation domination.
We consider a single 3-brane sitting in between two different five dimensional spacetimes. On each side of the brane, the bulk is a solution to Gauss-Bonnet gravity, although the bare cosmological constant, funda mental Planck scale, and Gauss-Bonnet coupling can differ. This asymmetry leads to weighted junction conditions across the brane and interesting brane cosmology. We focus on two special cases: a generalized Randall-Sundrum model without any Gauss-Bonnet terms, and a stringy model, without any bare cosmological constants, and positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Even though we assume there …
We show how to construct consistent braneworld models which exhibit late time acceleration. Unlike self-acceleration, which has a de Sitter vacuum state, our models have the standard Minkowski vacuum and accelerate only in the presence of matter, which we dub ``stealth-acceleration''. We use an effective action for the brane which includes an induced gravity term, and allow for an asymmetric set-up. We study the linear stability of flat brane vacua and find the regions of parameter space where the set-up is stable. The 4-dimensional graviton is only quasi-localised in this set-up and as a resu…
Five-dimensional spacetimes of two orbifold 3-branes are studied, by assuming that {\em the two 3-branes are spatially homogeneous, isotropic, and independent of time}, following the so-called "bulk-based" approach. The most general form of the metric is obtained, and the corresponding field equations are divided into three groups, one is valid on each of the two 3-branes, and the third is valid in the bulk. The Einstein tensor on the 3-branes is expressed in terms of the discontinuities of the first-order derivatives of the metric coefficients. Thus, once the metric is known in the bulk, the …
We present a novel mechanism for the present acceleration of the universe. We find that the temperature of the Unruh radiation perceived by the brane is not equal to the inherent temperature (Hawking temperature at the apparent horizon) of the brane universe in the frame of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model. The Unruh radiation perceived by a dust dominated brane is always warmer than the brane measured by the geometric temperature, which naturally induces an energy flow between bulk and brane based on the most sound thermodynamics principles. Through a thorough investigation to t…
In a recent paper, a model for describing the quantum dynamics of massive particles in a non-commutative two-sheeted spacetime was proposed. This model considers a universe made with two spacetime sheets embedded in a 5D bulk where the fifth dimension is restricted to only two points. It was shown that this construction has several important consequences for the quantum dynamics of massive particles. Most notably, it was demonstrated that a coupling arises between the two sheets allowing matter exchange in presence of intense magnetic vector potentials. In this paper, we show that non-commutat…
We present several higher-dimensional spacetimes for which observers living on 3-branes experience an induced metric which bounces. The classes of examples include boundary branes on generalised S-brane backgrounds and probe branes in D-brane/anti D-brane systems. The bounces we consider normally would be expected to require an energy density which violates the weak energy condition, and for our co-dimension one examples this is attributable to bulk curvature terms in the effective Friedmann equation. We examine the features of the acceleration which provides the bounce, including in some case…
We investigate the cosmological properties of an "induced gravity" brane scenario in the absence of mirror symmetry with respect to the brane. We find that brane evolution can proceed along one of four distinct branches. By contrast, when mirror symmetry is imposed, only two branches exist, one of which represents the self-accelerating brane, while the other is the so-called normal branch. This model incorporates many of the well-known possibilities of brane cosmology including phantom acceleration (w < -1), self-acceleration, transient acceleration, quiescent singularities, and cosmic mimicry…
A late epoch cosmic acceleration may be naturally entangled with cosmic coincidence -- the observation that at the onset of acceleration the vacuum energy density fraction nearly coincides with the matter density fraction. In this Letter we show that this is indeed the case with the cosmology of a Friedmann-Lamaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) 3-brane in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We derive the four-dimensional effective action on a FLRW 3-brane, which helps define a general reduction formula, namely, $M_P^{2}=ρ_{b}/|Λ_5|$, where $M_{P}$ is the effective Planck mass, $Λ_5$ is the…
We report on explicit cosmological solutions within the framework of an inflating de Sitter brane embedded in five- and ten-dimensional bulk spacetimes. In the specific example we study the brane tension is induced by the curvature related to the expansion of a physical 3+1 spacetime rather than by a bulk cosmological term. In a generic situation with nonzero brane tension, the expansion of the universe accelerates eventually. We also show that inflationary cosmology is possible for a wide class of metrics without violating four- and higher-dimensional null energy condition.
In this paper we derive, directly from the Nambu-Goto action, the relevant components of the acceleration of cosmological featureless $p$-branes, extending previous analysis based on the field theory equations in the thin-brane limit. The component of the acceleration parallel to the velocity is at the core of the velocity-dependent one-scale model for the evolution of $p$-brane networks. We use this model to show that, in a decelerating expanding universe in which the $p$-branes are relevant cosmologically, interactions cannot lead to frustration, except for fine-tuned non-relativistic networ…
The assumption that our Universe is close to a late time fixed point of the equations of cosmology, leads to a modification of the latter to include energy exchange between the matter and the "dark energy". The brane-world scenario provides a natural set-up for such energy exchange and is analyzed in detail. The role of brane-bulk energy exchange and of an induced gravity term on a single braneworld of negative tension and vanishing effective cosmological constant is studied. It is shown that for the physically interesting cases of dust and radiation a unique global attractor which can realize…
Orbifold branes are studied in the framework of the 11-dimensional Horava-Witten heterotic M-Theory. It is found that the effective cosmological constant can be easily lowered to its current observational value by the mechanism of large extra dimensions. The domination of this constant over the evolution of the universe is only temporarily. Due to the interaction of the bulk and the branes, the universe will be in its decelerating expansion phase again in the future, whereby all problems connected with a far future de Sitter universe are resolved.
Recently it was observed that the hyperbolic compactification of M/string theory related to S-branes may lead to a transient period of acceleration of the universe. We study time evolution of the corresponding effective 4d cosmological model supplemented by cold dark matter and show that it is marginally possible to describe observational data for the late-time cosmic acceleration in this model. However, investigation of the compactification 11d -> 4d suggests that the Compton wavelengths of the KK modes in this model are of the same order as the size of the observable part of the universe. As…
We find a description of hybrid inflation in (3+1)-dimensions using brane dynamics of Hanany-Witten type. P-term inflation/acceleration of the universe with the hybrid potential has a slow-roll de Sitter stage and a waterfall stage which leads towards an N=2 supersymmetric ground state. We identify the slow-roll stage of inflation with a non-supersymmetric `Coulomb phase' with Fayet-Iliopoulos term. This stage ends when the mass squared of one of the scalars in the hypermultiplet becomes negative. At that moment the brane system starts undergoing a phase transition via tachyon condensation to …
By combining the first year data from the Supernova Legacy Survey (SN LS) and the recent detection of the baryon acoustic peak in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, we are able to place strong constraints on models where the cosmic acceleration is due to the leakage of gravity from the brane into the bulk on large scales. In particular, we are able to show that the DGP model is not compatible with a spatially flat universe. We generalize our analysis to phenomenological toy models where the curvature of the brane enters into the Friedmann equations in different ways.
We show that Dirac-Born-Infeld theory possesses a hidden invariance that enhances the local O(1,p) Lorentz symmetry on a Dirichlet p-brane to an O(1,p) x O(1,p) gauge group, encoding both an invariant velocity and acceleration (or length) scale. This enlarged gauge group predicts consequences for the kinematics of observers on Dirichlet branes, with admissible accelerations being bounded from above. An important lesson beyond string theory is that a fundamental length scale can be implemented into the kinematics of general relativity, whilst preserving both space-time as a smooth manifold and …
Braneworld models of dark energy are examined in the light of observations of high redshift type Ia supernovae. Braneworld models admit several novel and even exotic possibilities which include: (i) The effective equation of state of dark energy can be more negative than in LCDM: $w \leq -1$; (ii) A class of braneworld models can encounter a `quiescent' future singularity at which the energy density and the Hubble parameter remain well behaved, but higher derivatives of the expansion factor ($\stackrel{..}{a}$, $\stackrel{...}{a}$ etc.) diverge when the future singularity is reached; (iii) The…
Recently we proposed that the acceleration of the Universe could be due to gravity leaking to extra dimensions. This scenario gives an alternative to the cosmological constant or quintessence. In [astro-ph/0106274] the authors claimed that this proposal is strongly disfavored if not ruled out by the existing data on Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background and clusters. We show that the work [astro-ph/0106274] contains incorrect statements in the theoretical part, and, moreover, we argue that the main conclusions of the work concerning the comparison with the data are premature.
We consider the cosmological evolution of a bulk scalar field and ordinary matter living on the brane world in the light of the constraints imposed by the matter dominated cosmological evolution and a small cosmological constant now. We rule out models with a self-tuned minimum of the four dimensional potential as they would lead to rapid oscillations of the Hubble parameter now. A more natural framework is provided by supergravity in singular spaces where the brane coupling and the bulk potential are related by supersymmetry leading to a four dimensional run-away potential. For late times we …
Recently, in Gong {\em et al} \cite{GWW07} and Wang and Santos \cite{WS07} it was shown that the effective cosmological constant on each of the two orbifold branes can be easily lowered to its current observational value, by using the large extra dimensions in the framework of both M-Theory and string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. In this paper, we study the current acceleration of the universe, using the formulas developed in \cite{WS07}. We first construct explicitly time-dependent solution to the 10-dimensional bulk of the Neveu-Schwarz/Neveu-Schwarz sector, compactified on a 5-dimensional torus…
We describe a model of hybrid quintessence in which in addition to the tracker field there is a trigger field which is responsible for ending quintessence. As a result, hybrid quintessence does not suffer from the problems associated with the eternal acceleration of the universe. We derive the hybrid quintessence potential on branes from the interbrane interaction in string theory and show that it requires TeV scale strings and two millimeter size dimensions. This scenario predicts a dark energy density of $O(mm^{-4})$ and relates the smallness of this energy to the large size of the extra dim…
We explore a new class of braneworld models in which the scalar curvature of the (induced) brane metric contributes to the brane action. The scalar curvature term arises generically on account of one-loop effects induced by matter fields residing on the brane. Spatially flat braneworld models can enter into a regime of accelerated expansion at late times. This is true even if the brane tension and the bulk cosmological constant are tuned to satisfy the Randall--Sundrum constraint on the brane. Braneworld models admit a wider range of possibilities for dark energy than standard LCDM. In these m…
We consider the cosmological evolution of a brane for general bulk matter content. In our setup the bulk pressure and the energy exchange densities are comparable to the brane energy density. Adopting a phenomenological fluid ansatz and generalizations of it, we derive a set of exact solutions of the Friedmann equation that exhibit accelerated expansion. We find that the effective equation of state parameter for the dark energy can exhibit w=-1 crossing without the presence of exotic matter.
We introduce a duality relation between two distinct branes, a cosmological brane with macroscopic matter and a holographic brane with microscopic gauge fields. Using brane-world cosmology with a single brane in a 5-dimensional AdS5 background, we find an explicit time-dependent holographic correspondence between the bulk metric surrounding the cosmological brane and the N=4 gauge field theory living on the boundary of the Z2-symmetric mirror bulk, identified with the holographic brane. We then relate the cosmic acceleration on the cosmological brane to the conformal anomaly of the gauge theor…
We argue that the cosmological constant problem can be solved in a braneworld model with infinite-volume extra dimensions, avoiding no-go arguments applicable to theories that are four-dimensional in the infrared. Gravity on the brane becomes higher-dimensional at super-Hubble distances, which entails that the relation between the acceleration rate and vacuum energy density flips upside down compared to the conventional one. The acceleration rate decreases with increasing the energy density. The experimentally acceptable rate is obtained for the energy density larger than (1 TeV)$^4$. The resu…
Observations exploring the contemporary cosmic acceleration have sparked interest in dark energy models possessing equations of state with w < -1. We review how the cosmic expansion history of a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model with a standard brane cosmological constant can mimic that of ordinary 4-dimensional gravity with w < -1 "phantom" dark energy for observationally relevant redshifts. We reinterpret the effective phantom nature of the dark energy as arising from dynamical-screening of the brane cosmological constant in DGP. This unusual variety of expansion history is thus…
We study aspects of TeV string scale models of intersecting D-branes. The gauge bosons arise from strings ending on stacks of D-branes, whereas chiral matter arises from strings stretched between intersecting D-branes. Our focus is on scattering amplitudes (at tree-level), Regge states (string excitations), and collider phenomenology. Achieving a low string scale is possible in models of Large extra dimensions. At the LHC, a low enough string scale implies that cross sections will deviate from their standard model predictions. Moreover, Regge states as well as Kaluza-Klein states and winding s…
Recent type Ia supernovae data seem to favor a dark energy model whose equation of state $w(z)$ crosses -1, which is a much more amazing problem than the acceleration of the universe. Either the case that $w(z)$ evolves from above -1 to below -1 or the case that $w(z)$ runs from below -1 to above -1, is consistent with present data. In this paper we show that it is possible to realize the crossing behaviours of both of the two cases by only a single scalar field in frame of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld. At the same time we prove that there does not exist scaling solution in a universe wi…
Properties of Braneworld models of dark energy are reviewed. Braneworld models admit the following interesting possibilities: (i) The effective equation of state can be w < -1 as well as w > -1. In the former case the expansion of the universe is well behaved at all times and the universe does not run into a future `Big Rip' singularity which is usually encountered by Phantom models. (ii) For a class of Braneworld models the acceleration of the universe can be a transient phenomenon. In this case the current acceleration of the universe is sandwiched between two matter dominated epochs. Such a…
I describe a heuristic model where MOND dynamics emerge in a universe viewed as a nearly spherical brane embedded in a higher-dimensional flat space. The brane, described by $ξ(Ω)$, is of density $σ$ ($ξ$ and $Ω$ are the radial and angular coordinates in the embedding space). The brane and matter -- confined to the brane and of density $ρ(Ω)\llσ$ -- are coupled to a potential $\varepsilon(ξ)$. I restrict myself to shallow perturbations, $ξ(Ω)=\ell_0+ζ(Ω)$, $|ζ|\ll\ell_0$. A balanced brane implies $\hat a_0\equiv\varepsilon'(\ell_0)\sim T/σ\ell_0$, $T$ is the brane tension, yielding for the vel…
This paper investigates a new experimental framework to test the braneworld hypothesis. Recent theoretical results have shown the possibility of matter exchange between branes under the influence of suitable magnetic vector potentials. It is shown that the required conditions might be achieved with present-day technology. The experiment uses a source of pulsed and coherent electromagnetic radiation and relies on the Hansch frequency comb technique well-known in ultrahigh-precision spectroscopy. A good matter candidate for testing the hypothesis is a polarized ultracold neutron gas for which th…
Any candidate theory of quantum gravity must address the breakdown of the classical smooth manifold picture of space-time at distances comparable to the Planck length. String theory, in contrast, is formulated on conventional space-time. However, we show that in the low energy limit, the dynamics of generally curved Dirichlet p-branes possess an extended local isometry group, which can be absorbed into the brane geometry as an almost product structure. The induced kinematics encode two invariant scales, namely a minimal length and a maximal speed, without breaking general covariance. Quantum g…
