The paper addresses boundary electronic properties of graphene with a complex edge structure of the armchair/zigzag/armchair type. It is shown that the finite zigzag region supports edge bound states with discrete equidistant spectrum obtained from the Green's function of the continuum Dirac equation. The energy levels exhibit the coupling between the valley degree of freedom and the orbital quantum number, analogous to a spin-orbit interaction. The characteristic feature of the spectrum is the presence of a zero mode, the bound state of vanishing energy. It resides only in one of the graphene valleys, breaking spontaneously Kramers' symmetry of the edge states. This implies the spontaneous valley polarization characterized by the valley isospin $\pm 1/2$. The polarization is manifested by a zero-magnetic field anomaly in the local tunneling density of states, and is directly related to the local electric Hall conductivity.
Graphene's outstanding mechanical properties lend to strain engineering, allowing for future valleytronics and nanoelectromechanic applications. In this work, we have found that a Gaussian-shaped strain on a graphene p-n junction results in quantum Hall conductance oscillations due to the rotated angle between valley isospins at the graphene armchair edges. Furthermore, additional Fano resonances were observed as the value of the strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field approaches that of the external magnetic field. The lifted valley degeneracy, stemming from the interplay between the real and ps…
In the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields, a graphene ribbon has chiral states running along sample edges and along boundaries between $p$-doped and $n$-doped regions. We here consider the scattering of edge states into interface states, which takes place whereever the $pn$ interface crosses the sample boundary, as well as the reverse process. For a graphene ribbon with armchair boundaries, the evolution of edge states into interface states and {\em vice versa} is governed by the conservation of valley isospin. Although valley isospin is not conserved in simplified models of a ri…
We calculate the conductance G of a bipolar junction in a graphene nanoribbon, in the high-magnetic field regime where the Hall conductance in the p-doped and n-doped regions is 2e^2/h. In the absence of intervalley scattering, the result G=(e^2/h)(1-cos Phi) depends only on the angle Phi between the valley isospins (= Bloch vectors representing the spinor of the valley polarization) at the two opposite edges. This plateau in the conductance versus Fermi energy is insensitive to electrostatic disorder, while it is destabilized by the dispersionless edge state which may exist at a zigzag bounda…
The transport properties of Chern insulator junctions generated by bipolar junctions in quantum Hall graphene are theoretically studied in the coherent regime. Coherent transport across the junction exhibits two mesoscopic features: valley-isospin dependence of the quantum Hall conductance, and the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effects with the interface channels. We demonstrate that the valley-isospin dependence can be measured in a graphene sample with perfect edge terminations, resulting in conductance oscillation for the smallest Chern number case. On the other hand, while conductance plateaus are fo…
We show that bilayer graphene exhibits magneto-electric effects that are formally similar to those commonly seen in band insulators with broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Three unusual features characterize the magneto-electric responses exhibited by bilayer graphene: (i) unlike most other magneto-electric media, bilayer graphene is a conductor, (ii) bilayer graphene has a non-quantized magneto-electric coupling even though its electronic structure does not break parity and time-reversal symmetry, and (iii) the magnitude of the magneto-electric coupling in bilayer graphene is dete…
New phase of matter usually emerges when a given symmetry breaks spontaneously, which can involve charge, spin, and valley degree of freedoms. Here, we report an observation of new correlated insulators evolved from spin polarized states to valley polarized states in AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). The transition of the isospin polarization is a result of the competition between spin and valley, driven by the displacement field (D). At a high field |D| > 0.7 V/nm, we observe valley polarized correlated insulators with a big Zeeman g factor of ~10, both at v = 2 in the moi…
Valleytronics is a rising topic to explore the emergent degree of freedom for charge carriers in energy band edges and has attracted a great interest due to many intriguing quantum phenomena and potential application in information processing industry. Creation of permanent valley polarization, i.e. unbalanced occupation at different valleys, is a chief challenge and also urgent question to be solved in valleytronics. Here we predict that the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic ordering allow spontaneous valley Zeeman-type splitting in pristine monolayer of VAgP2Se6 by using first-principles calc…
At high magnetic fields the conductance of graphene is governed by the half-integer quantum Hall effect. By local electrostatic gating a \textit{p-n} junction perpendicular to the graphene edges can be formed, along which quantum Hall channels co-propagate. It has been predicted by Tworzidło and co-workers that if only the lowest Landau level is filled on both sides of the junction, the conductance is determined by the valley (isospin) polarization at the edges and by the width of the flake. This effect remained hidden so far due to scattering between the channels co-propagating along the \tex…
We report magneto-absorption spectroscopy of gated WSe$_2$ monolayers in high magnetic fields up to 60~T. When doped with a 2D Fermi sea of mobile holes, well-resolved sequences of optical transitions are observed in both $σ^\pm$ circular polarizations, which unambiguously and separately indicate the number of filled Landau levels (LLs) in both $K$ and $K'$ valleys. This reveals the interaction-enhanced valley Zeeman energy, which is found to be highly tunable with hole density $p$. We exploit this tunability to align the LLs in $K$ and $K'$, and find that the 2D hole gas becomes unstable agai…
Valleytronics rooted in the valley degree of freedom is of both theoretical and technological importance as it offers additional opportunities for information storage and electronic, magnetic and optical switches. In analogy to ferroelectric materials with spontaneous charge polarization in electronics, as well as ferromagnetic materials with spontaneous spin polarization in spintronics, here we introduce a new member of ferroic-family, i.e. a ferrovalley material with spontaneous valley polarization. Combining a two-band kp model with first-principles calculations, we show that 2H-VSe2 monola…

Chirally stacked N-layer graphene systems with N >= 2 exhibit a variety of distinct broken symmetry states in which charge density contributions from different spins and valleys are spontaneously transferred between layers. We explain how these states are distinguished by their charge, spin, and valley Hall conductivities, by their orbital magnetizations, and by their edge state properties. We argue that valley Hall states have [N/2] edge channels per spin-valley.
Electron bands in the untwisted bilayer graphene flatten out in a transverse electric field, offering a promising platform for correlated electron physics. We predict that the spin/valley isospin magnetism, resembling that seen in moiré bands, coexists with momentum-polarized phases occurring via a ``flocking transition'' in momentum space. This transition results in the electron momentum distribution being spontaneously displaced relative to the $K$ and $K'$ valley centers. These phases feature unusual observables such as persistent currents in the ground state. Momentum-polarized carriers ``…
A Zener diode is a paradigmatic device in semiconductor-based electronics that consists of a pn junction where an external electric field induces a switching behavior in the current-voltage characteristics. We study Zener tunneling in HgTe quantum wells and graphene multilayers. We find that the tunneling transition probability depends asymmetrically on the parallel momentum of the carriers to the barrier. In HgTe quantum wells the asymmetry is the opposite for each spin, whereas for graphene multilayers it is the opposite for each valley degree of freedom. In both cases, a spin/valley current…
A proximity effect at a van der Waals (vdW) interface enables creation of an emergent quantum electronic ground state. Here we demonstrate that an originally-superconducting two-dimensional (2D) NbSe2 forms a ferromagnetic ground state with spontaneous spin polarization at a vdW interface with a 2D ferromagnet V5Se8. We investigated the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of the NbSe2/V5Se8 magnetic vdW heterostructures, and found that the sign of the AHE was reversed as the number of the V5Se8 layer was thinned down to the monolayer limit. Interestingly, the AHE signal of those samples was enhanced w…
Van der Waals heterostructures provide a rich platform for emergent physics due to their tunable hybridization of electronic orbital- and spin-degrees of freedom. Here, we show that a heterostructure formed by twisted bilayer graphene sandwiched between ferromagnetic insulators develops flat bands stemming from the interplay between twist, exchange proximity and spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that in this flat-band regime, the spin degree of freedom is hybridized, giving rise to an effective triangular superlattice with valley as a degenerate pseudospin degree of freedom. Incorporating el…
Intrinsic Hall conductivity, emerging when chiral symmetry is broken, is at the heart of future low energy consumption devices because it can generate non-dissipative charge neutral current. A symmetry breaking state is also induced by electronic correlation even for the centro-symmetric crystalline materials. However, generation of non-dissipative charge neutral current by intrinsic Hall conductivity induced by such spontaneous symmetry breaking is experimentally elusive. Here we report intrinsic Hall conductivity and generation of a non-dissipative charge neutral current in a spontaneous ant…
Memory or transistor devices based on electron's spin rather than its charge degree of freedom offer certain distinct advantages and comprise a cornerstone of spintronics. Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new field, valleytronics, which seeks to exploit electron's valley index rather than its spin. An important component in this quest would be the ability to control the valley index in a convenient fashion. Here we show that the valley polarization can be switched from zero to one by a small reduction in density, simply tuned by a gate bias, in a two-dimensional electron system. …
A number of strongly correlated heavy fermion compounds, such as samarium (Sm), ytterbium (Yb), plutonium (Pu) hexaboride, are predicted to become topological insulators at low temperatures. These systems support massless Dirac fermions near certain (three) points of the surface Brillouin zone, hereafter referred to as the valleys. In strong perpendicular magnetic fields, the conical Dirac dispersions of these surface states quench onto three sets of Landau levels and we predict various possible hierarchies of incompressible quantum Hall states on the surface of hexaborides. In addition, we ad…
We analyze theoretically the electronic properties of Aharonov-Bohm rings made of graphene. We show that the combined effect of the ring confinement and applied magnetic flux offers a controllable way to lift the orbital degeneracy originating from the two valleys, even in the absence of intervalley scattering. The phenomenon has observable consequences on the persistent current circulating around the closed graphene ring, as well as on the ring conductance. We explicitly confirm this prediction analytically for a circular ring with a smooth boundary modelled by a space-dependent mass term in …
Ferrovalley materials can achieve manipulation of the valley degree of freedom with intrinsic spontaneous valley polarization introduced by their intrinsic ferromagnetism. A good ferrovalley material should possess perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), valence band maximum (VBM)/conduction band minimum (CBM) at valley points, strong ferromagnetic (FM) coupling and proper valley splitting. In this work, the monolayer $\mathrm{GdCl_2}$ is proposed as a potential candidate material for valleytronic applications by the first-principles calculations. It is proved that monolayer $\mathrm{GdCl_2}$…

In a graphene Landau level (LL), strong Coulomb interactions and the fourfold spin/valley degeneracy lead to an approximate SU(4) isospin symmetry. At partial filling, exchange interactions can spontaneously break this symmetry, manifesting as additional integer quantum Hall plateaus outside the normal sequence. Here we report the observation of a large number of these quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states, which we classify according to their real spin structure using temperature-dependent tilted field magnetotransport. The large measured activation gaps confirm the Coulomb origin…
Gapless bilayer graphene is susceptible to a variety of spontaneously gapped states. As predicted by theory and observed by experiment, the ground state is however topologically trivial, because a valley-independent gap is energetically favorable. Here, we show that under the application of interlayer electric field and circularly polarized light, one valley can be selected to exhibit the original interaction instability while the other is frozen out. Tuning this Floquet system stabilizes multiple competing topological ordered states, distinguishable by edge transport and circular dichroism. N…
A number of quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states have been predicted in the relativistic zero Landau level (LL) of graphene monolayer. These states, especially the states at LL filling factor v = 0 of charge-neutral graphene, have been extensively explored in experiment. To date, identification of these high-field broken-symmetry states has mostly relied on macroscopic transport techniques. Here, we study splitting of the zero LL of graphene at partial filling and demonstrate a direct approach by imaging the QHIFM states at atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope. At hal…
We present a numerical study of exciton-polariton (polariton) condensation in a staggered polariton graphene showing a gapped s-band at the $K$ and $K'$ valleys. The condensation occurs at $K$ or $K'$, at the kinetically-favorable negative mass extrema of the valence band. Considering attractive polariton-polariton interaction allows to generate a spatially extended condensate. Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurring during the condensate build-up leads to the formation of valley-polarized domains following the Kibble-Zurek scenario. The selection of a single valley breaks time-reversal symmet…
Recent experiments by Gutiérrez $\textit{et al.}$ [Nature Phys. $\textbf{12}$, 950 (2016)] on a graphene-copper superlattice have revealed an unusual Kekulé bond texture in the honeycomb lattice --- a Y-shaped modulation of weak and strong bonds with a wave vector connecting two Dirac points. We show that this so-called "Kek-Y" texture produces two species of massless Dirac fermions, with valley isospin locked parallel or antiparallel to the direction of motion. In a magnetic field $B$ the valley degeneracy of the $B$-dependent Landau levels is removed by the valley-momentum locking --- but a …
Emergent phenomena arising from the collective behavior of electrons is generally expected when Coulomb interactions dominate over the kinetic energy, as in delocalized quasiparticles in highly degenerate flat bands. Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene intrinsically supports a pair of flat bands predicted to host a variety of spontaneous broken-symmetry states arising from van Hove singularities and a four-fold spin-valley (isospin) degeneracy. Here, we show that ultra-clean samples of bilayer graphene display a cascade of symmetry-broken states with spontaneous and spin and valley ordering at zer…
Because the valleys in the band structure of graphene are related by time-reversal symmetry, electrons from one valley are reflected as holes from the other valley at the junction with a superconductor. We show how this Andreev reflection can be used to detect the valley polarization of edge states produced by a magnetic field. In the absence of intervalley relaxation, the conductance G_NS=2(e^2/h)(1-cos(Theta)) of the junction on the lowest quantum Hall plateau is entirely determined by the angle Theta between the valley isospins of the edge states approaching and leaving the superconductor. …
We theoretically study transport signatures associated with a spontaneous 2-valley to 1-valley quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) tuned by decreasing the 2D carrier density, as claimed in a recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 116601 (2021)]. The key issue we focus on is whether the experimentally measured 2D resistivity as a function of carrier density is consistent (or not) with an underlying spontaneous valley-polarization transition as assumed uncritically in the experimental report. Our theoretical analysis is particularly germane since the experiment do…
Twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) comprises two Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene sheets with a twist between them. Gate voltages applied to top and back gates of a tDBG device tune both the flatness and topology of the electronic bands, enabling an unusual level of experimental control. Broken spin/valley symmetry metallic states have been observed in tDBG devices with twist angles $\sim $ 1.2-1.3$^\circ$, but the topologies and order parameters of these states have remained unclear. We report the observation of an anomalous Hall effect in the correlated metal state of tDBG, with hysteresi…
Interlayer valley excitons in bilayer MoS2 feature concurrently large oscillator strength and long lifetime, and hence represent an advantageous scenario for valleytronic applications. However, control of valley pseudospin of interlayer excitons in pristine bilayer MoS2, which lies at the heart of valleytronics, has remained elusive. Here we report the observation of highly circularly polarized photoluminescence from interlayer excitons of bilayer MoS2 with both optical and magnetic addressability. Under excitation of circularly polarized light near exciton resonance, interlayer excitons of bi…
We propose that the inversion symmetry of the graphene honeycomb lattice is spontaneously broken via a magnetic field dependent Peierls distortion. This leads to valley splitting of the $n=0$ Landau level but not of the other Landau levels. Compared to quantum Hall valley ferromagnetism recently discussed in the literature, lattice distortion provides an alternative explanation to all the currently observed quantum Hall plateaus in graphene.

We study a cluster of quantum dots defined within silicene that host confined electron states with spin and valley degrees of freedom. Atomistic tight-binding and continuum Dirac approximation are applied for few-electron system in quest for spontaneous valley polarization driven by inter-dot tunneling and electron-electron interaction, i.e. a valley counterpart of itinerary Nagaoka ferromagnetic ordering recently identified in GaAs square cluster of quantum dots with three excess electrons [P. Dehollain, {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 579}, 528 (2020)]. We find that for Hamiltonian without intrins…
Because of its large density-of-states and the 2π Berry phase near its low-energy band-contact points, neutral bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero magnetic field (B) is susceptible to chiral-symmetry breaking, leading to a variety of gapped spontaneous quantum Hall states distinguished by valley and spin-dependent quantized Hall conductivities. Among these, the layer antiferromagnetic state, which has quantum valley Hall (QVH) effects of opposite sign for opposite spins, appears to be the thermodynamic ground state. Though other gapped states have not been observed experimentally at B=0, they can b…
In graphene, a Kekulé-Y bond texture modifies the electronic band structure generating two concentric Dirac cones with different Fermi velocities lying in the Γ-point in reciprocal space. The energy dispersion results in different group velocities for each isospin component at a given energy. This energy spectrum combined with the negative refraction index in p-n junctions, allows the emergence of an electronic analog of optical birefringence in graphene. We characterize the valley birefringence produced by a circularly symmetric Kekulé patterned and gated region using the scattering approach.…
In this paper, we present a novel route to tunable spontaneous valley coherence in heterostructures of two dimensional valleytronic materials with other layered materials hosting anisotropic polaritonic modes. We first discuss the dependence of this coherence on the conductivity tensor of the anisotropic part of a general heterostructure and on its geometrical configuration. Subsequently, we propose two implementations - one, using anisotropic plasmons in phosphorene and another with hyperbolic phonon polaritons in MoO3. In both these systems we show for the first time electrostatic tunability…
The valley degrees of freedom of carriers in crystals is useful to process information and perform logic operations, and it is a key factor for valley application to realize the valley polarization. Here, we propose a model that the valley polarization transition at different valley points (-K and K points) is produced by biaxial strain. By the first-principle calculations, we illustrate our idea with a concrete example of Janus $\mathrm{GdClF}$ monolayer. The predicted $\mathrm{GdClF}$ monolayer is dynamically, mechanically and thermally stable, and is a ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor with …
Symmetry and topology play key roles in the identification of phases of matter and their properties. Both concepts are central to understanding quantum Hall ferromagnets (QHFMs), two-dimensional electronic phases with spontaneously broken spin or pseudospin symmetry whose wavefunctions also have topological properties. Domain walls between distinct broken symmetry QHFM phases are predicted to host gapless one-dimensional (1D) modes that emerge due to a topological change of the underlying electronic wavefunctions at such interfaces. Although a variety of QHFMs have been identified in different…
We consider the anomalous thermoelectric transport in gapped single and bilayer graphene where the gap may be due to broken inversion symmetry. In the presence of the gap, non-trivial Berry phase effects can be shown to mediate a transverse thermoelectric voltage in response to an applied temperature gradient even in the absence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This spontaneous, anomalous Nernst effect is nonzero for non-uniform chemical potential in the two inequivalent valleys in the graphene band structure. Conversely, the Nernst response can be used to create a valley-index polarization …
Bilayer graphene hosts valley-chiral one dimensional modes at domain walls between regions of different interlayer potential or stacking order. When such a channel is brought into proximity to a superconductor, the two electrons of a Cooper pair which tunnel into it move in opposite directions because they belong to different valleys related by the time-reversal symmetry. This is a kinetic variant of Cooper pair splitting, which requires neither Coulomb repulsion nor energy filtering but is enforced by the robustness of the valley isospin in the absence of atomic-scale defects. We derive an ef…
The influence of strong electron-electron interactions and Wigner-molecule (WM) formation on the spectra of $2e$ singlet-triplet double-dot Si qubits is presented based on a full configuration interaction (FCI) approach that incorporates the valley degree of freedom (VDOF) in the context of the continuous (effective mass) description of semiconductor materials. Our FCI treats the VDOF as an isospin in addition to the regular spin. Our treatment is able to assign to each energy curve in the qubit's spectrum a complete set of good quantum numbers for both the spin and the valley isospin. This re…
