We propose a scheme for performing quantum simulations with atoms in cavities based on a photon detection feedback loop that requires only linear optical elements. Atoms can be stored individually without the need of directly interacting with one another. The scheme is able to simulate any time evolution that can be written as a sum of two-qubit Hamiltonians, .e.g., any next neighbor interaction on a lattice. It can also be made robust against photon losses.

We solve exactly the non-Markovian dynamics of a cavity mode in the presence of a feedback loop based on homodyne measurements, in the case of a non-zero feedback delay time. With an appropriate choice of the feedback parameters, this scheme is able to significantly increase the decoherence time of the cavity mode, even for delay times not much smaller than the decoherence time itself.

We show that when the speed of control is bounded, there is a widely applicable minimal-time control problem for which a coherent feedback protocol is optimal, and is faster than all measurement-based feedback protocols, where the latter are defined in a strict sense. The superiority of the coherent protocol is due to the fact that it can exploit a geodesic path in Hilbert space, a path that measurement-based protocols cannot follow.

Quantum feedback control is a technology which can be used to drive a quantum system into a predetermined eigenstate. In this article, sufficient conditions for the experiment parameters of a quantum feedback control process of a homodyne QND measurement are given to guarantee feedback control of a spin-1/2 quantum system in case of imperfect detection efficiency. For the case of pure states and perfect detection efficiency, time scales of feedback control processes are calculated.
The traditional approach to feedback control is to apply forces to a system by modifying the Hamiltonian. Here we show that quantum systems can be controlled without any Hamiltonian feedback, purely by exploiting the random quantum back-action of a continuous weak measurement. We demonstrate that, quite remarkably, the quantum back-action of such an adaptive measurement is just as effective at controlling quantum systems as traditional feedback.

Quantum coherent feedback control is a measurement-free control method fully preserving quantum coherence. In this paper we show how time-delayed quantum coherent feedback can be used to control the degree of squeezing in the output field of a cavity containing a degenerate parametric oscillator. We focus on the specific situation of Pyragas-type feedback control where time-delayed signals are fed back directly into the quantum system. Our results show how time-delayed feedback can enhance or decrease the degree of squeezing as a function of time delay and feedback strength.

One can view this regime as the quantum equivalent of the "linearized" regime for feedback control of classical nonlinear systems. We consider separating the problem of designing Hamiltonian quantum feedback control algorithms into a measurement (estimation) strategy and a feedback (control) strategy, and consider optimizing desirable properties of each under the minimal constraint that the available strength of both is limited. This motivates concepts of information extraction and disturbance which are distinct from those usually considered in quantum information theory. Using these concepts we identify an information trade-off in quantum feedback control.
We provide a model to investigate feedback control of entanglement. It consists of two distant (two-level) atoms which interact through a radiation field and becomes entangled. We then show the possibility to stabilize such entanglement against atomic decay by means of a feedback action.
We present a general approach to measurement-based quantum feedback that employs proportional and quantum state-based (PaQS) feedback components to obtain locally optimal protocols. It consists of two interacting bosonic modes subject to amplitude damping and achieving entangled Gaussian steady state. In this paper, we propose feedback designs for manipulating a quantum state to a target state by performing sequential measurements. In light of Belavkin's quantum feedback control theory, for a given set of (projective or non-projective) measurements and a given time horizon, we show that finding the measurement selection policy that maximizes the probability of successful state manipulation is an optimal control problem for a controlled Markovian process. Coherent feedback is a non-measurement based, hence a back-action free, method of control for quantum systems. A typical application of this control scheme is squeezing enhancement, a purely non-classical effect in quantum optics. In this paper we report its first experimental demonstration that well agrees with the theory taking into account time delays and losses in the coherent feedback loop. The results clarify both the benefit and the limitation of coherent feedback control in a practical situation.
We investigate feedback control of linear quantum systems subject to feedback-loop time delays. In particular, we examine the relation between the potentially achievable control performance and the time delays, and provide theoretical guidelines for the future experimental setup in two physical systems, which are typical in this research field. The evaluation criterion for the analysis is given by the optimal control performance formula, the derivation of which is from the classical control theoretic results about the input-output delay systems.
Controllability properties for discrete-time, Markovian quantum dynamics are investigated. We find that, while in general the controlled system is not finite-time controllable, feedback control allows for arbitrary asymptotic state-to-state transitions. Under further assumption on the form of the measurement, we show that finite-time controllability can be achieved in a time that scales linearly with the dimension of the system, and we provide an iterative procedure to design the unitary control actions.
The feedback stabilization problem for ensembles of coupled spin 1/2 systems is discussed from a control theoretic perspective. The noninvasive nature of the bulk measurement allows for a fully unitary and deterministic closed loop. The Lyapunov-based feedback design presented does not require spins that are selectively addressable. With this method, it is possible to obtain control inputs also for difficult tasks, like suppressing undesired couplings in identical spin systems.

We propose a simple feedback-control scheme for adiabatic quantum computation with superconducting flux qubits. The proposed method makes use of existing on-chip hardware to monitor the ground-state curvature, which is then used to control the computation speed to maximize the success probability. We show that this scheme can provide a polynomial speed-up in performance and that it is possible to choose a suitable set of feedback-control parameters for an arbitrary problem Hamiltonian.

We demonstrate unconditional quantum-noise suppression in a collective spin system via feedback control based on quantum non-demolition measurement (QNDM). We perform shot-noise limited collective spin measurements on an ensemble of $3.7\times 10^5$ laser-cooled 171Yb atoms in their spin-1/2 ground states. Correlation between two sequential QNDMs indicates $-0.80^{+0.11}_{-0.12}\,\mathrm{dB}$ quantum noise suppression in a conditional manner. Feedback control (based on the quantum continuous measurement) of quantum systems inevitably suffers from estimation delays. In this paper we give a delay-dependent stability criterion for a wide class of nonlinear stochastic systems including quantum spin systems. We utilize a semi-algebraic problem approach to incorporate the structure of density matrices. To show the effectiveness of the result, we derive a globally stabilizing control law for a quantum spin-1/2 systems in the face of feedback delays.
We revisit quantum Maxwell demon in thermodynamic feedback cycle in the steady-state regime. We derive a generalized version of the Clausius inequality for a finite-time steady feedback cycle with a single heat bath. It is shown to be tighter than previously known ones, and allows us to clarify that feedback control is necessary to violate the standard Clausius inequality.

Feedback control protocols can stabilize and enhance the operation of quantum devices, however, unavoidable delays in the feedback loop adversely affect their performance. We introduce a quantum control methodology, combining open-loop control with quantum filtering, which is not constrained by feedback delays. For the problems studied (rapid purification and rapid measurement) we analytically derive lower bounds on the control performance that are comparable with the best corresponding bounds for feedback protocols.
We derive integral quantum fluctuation theorems and quantum Jarzynski equalities for a feedback-controlled system and a memory which registers outcomes of the measurement. The obtained equalities involve the information content, which reflects the information exchange between the system and the memory, and take into account the back action of a general measurement contrary to the classical case. The generalized second law of thermodynamics under measurement and feedback control are reproduced from these equalities.
Circuit QED is a promising solid-state quantum computing architecture. It also has excellent potential as a platform for quantum control -- especially quantum feedback control -- experiments. We demonstrate feedback control of a superconducting transmon qubit using discrete, projective measurement and conditional coherent driving. Feedback realizes a fast and deterministic qubit reset to a target state with 2.4% error averaged over input superposition states, and cooling of the transmon from 16% spurious excitation to 3%. This closed-loop qubit control is necessary for measurement-based protocols such as quantum error correction and teleportation.

We work in a scattering approach and derive results for the combined scattering matrix of the device-controller system and determine the conditions under which the controller can exert ideal control on the output characteristics. We introduce a feedback control algorithm that increases the speed at which a measurement extracts information about a $d$-dimensional system by a factor that scales as $d^2$. Generalizing this algorithm, we apply it to a register of $n$ qubits and show an improvement O(n). We derive analytical bounds on the benefit provided by the feedback and perform simulations that confirm that this speedup is achieved.
