In the 1980's, the work of Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman, along with that of Borcherds, culminated in the notion of vertex operator algebra, and an example whose full symmetry group is the largest sporadic simple group: the Monster. Thus it was shown that the vertex operators of mathematical physics play a role in finite group theory. In this article we describe an extension of this phenomenon by introducing the notion of enhanced vertex operator algebra, and constructing examples that realize other sporadic simple groups, including one that is not involved in the Monster.
We introduce the notion of vertex operator superalgebra with enhanced conformal structure, which is a refinement of the notion of vertex operator superalgebra. We exhibit several examples, including a particular one which is self-dual, and whose full symmetry group is a direct product of a cyclic group of order seven with the sporadic simple group of Rudvalis. We thus obtain an analogue of Monstrous Moonshine for a sporadic group not involved in the Monster. Two variable analogues of the usual McKay--Thompson series are naturally associated to the action of the Rudvalis group on this object, a…
In Part I we introduced the notion of enhanced vertex operator superalgebra, and constructed an example which is self-dual, has rank 28, and whose full symmetry group is a seven-fold cover of the sporadic simple group of Rudvalis. In this article we construct a second enhanced vertex operator superalgebra whose full automorphism group is a cyclic cover of the Rudvalis group. This new example is self-dual and has rank -28. As in Part I, we can compute all the McKay--Thompson series associated to the action of the Rudvalis group explicitly. We observe that these series, when considered together …
We study a self-dual N=1 super vertex operator algebra and prove that the full symmetry group is Conway's largest sporadic simple group. We verify a uniqueness result which is analogous to that conjectured to characterize the Moonshine vertex operator algebra. The action of the automorphism group is sufficiently transparent that one can derive explicit expressions for all the McKay-Thompson series. A corollary of the construction is that the perfect double cover of the Conway group may be characterized as a point-stabilizer in a spin module for the Spin group associated to a 24 dimensional Euc…
The monster sporadic group is the automorphism group of a central charge $c=24$ vertex operator algebra (VOA) or meromorphic conformal field theory (CFT). In addition to its $c=24$ stress tensor $T(z)$, this theory contains many other conformal vectors of smaller central charge; for example, it admits $48$ commuting $c=\frac12$ conformal vectors whose sum is $T(z)$. Such decompositions of the stress tensor allow one to construct new CFTs from the monster CFT in a manner analogous to the Goddard-Kent-Olive (GKO) coset method for affine Lie algebras. We use this procedure to produce evidence for…
We study a simple, self-dual, rational, and $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT-type whose simple current modules are graded by $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$. Based on those simple current modules, a vertex operator algebra associated with a $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$-code is constructed. The classification of irreducible modules for such a vertex operator algebra is established. Furthermore, all the irreducible modules are realized in a module for a certain lattice vertex operator algebra.
We construct super vertex operator algebras which lead to modules for moonshine relations connecting the four smaller sporadic simple Mathieu groups with distinguished mock modular forms. Starting with an orbifold of a free fermion theory, any subgroup of Co_0 that fixes a 3-dimensional subspace of its unique non-trivial 24-dimensional representation commutes with a certain N=4 superconformal algebra. Similarly, any subgroup of Co_0 that fixes a 2-dimensional subspace of the 24-dimensional representation commutes with a certain N=2 superconformal algebra. Through the decomposition of the corre…
We show that if $T$ is a simple non-negatively graded regular vertex operator algebra with a nonsingular invariant bilinear form and $σ$ is a finite order automorphism of $T$, then the fixed-point vertex operator subalgebra $T^σ$ is also regular. This yields regularity for fixed point vertex operator subalgebras under the action of any finite solvable group. As an application, we obtain an $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$-compatibility between twisted twining characters for commuting finite order automorphisms of holomorphic vertex operator algebras. This resolves one of the principal claims in the Generali…
We introduce a simple, self-dual, rational, and $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT-type associated with a $\mathbb{Z}_k$-code for $k \ge 2$ based on the $\mathbb{Z}_k$-symmetry among the simple current modules for the parafermion vertex operator algebra $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)$. We show that it is naturally realized as the commutant of a certain subalgebra in a lattice vertex operator algebra. Furthermore, we construct all the irreducible modules inside a module for the lattice vertex operator algebra.
In this paper, we study the algebra of twisted vertex operators over an even integral ${\mathbf Z}_2$-lattice, and give a kind of systematic construction of fundamental representations for affine Lie algebras of type $A$, $D$, $E$ with their irreducible decompositions.
We investigate a general structure theory for a vertex operator algebra. We discuss the center and blocks, the Jacobson radical and solvable radical and local vertex operator algebras. The main consequence of our structure theory is that if the vertex operator algebra satisfies some mild conditions then it is necessarily semilocal, i.e. a direct sum of local vertex operator algebras.
It is proved that any vertex operator algebra for which the image of the Virasoro element in Zhu's algebra is algebraic over complex numbers is finitely generated. In particular, any vertex operator algebra with a finite dimensional Zhu's algebra is finitely generated. As a result, any rational vertex operator algebra is finitely generated.
The rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebras whose effective central charges and the central charges c are equal and less than 1 are classified. Such a vertex operator algebra is zero if c<0 and C if c=0. If c>0, it is an extension of discrete Virasoro vertex operator algebra L(c_{p,q},0) by its irreducible modules. It is also proved that for any rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra whose effective central charge and central charge are equal, the vertex operator subalgebra generated by the Virasoro vector is simple.
We determine Zhu's algebra and C_2-algebra of parafermion vertex operator algebras for sl_2. Moreover, we prove the C_2-cofiniteness of parafermion vertex operator algebras for any finite dimensional simple Lie algebras.
We prove a conjecture stated in a previous paper by the author about the existence of canonical filtrations for a family of vertex operator algebras in rational levels.
We define an integral intertwining operator among modules for a vertex operator algebra to be an intertwining operator which respects integral forms in the modules, and we show that an intertwining operator is integral if it is integral when restricted to generators of the integral forms in the modules. We apply this result to classify integral intertwining operators which respect certain natural integral forms in modules for affine Lie algebra and lattice vertex operator algebras.
The rationality and C_2-cofiniteness of the orbifold vertex operator algebra V_{L_{2}}^{A_{4}} are established and all the irreducible modules are constructed and classified. This is part of classification of rational vertex operator algebras with c=1.
The rationality of the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra and any nonnegative integer is established and the irreducible modules are determined.
In this paper, the irreducible modules for the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-orbifold vertex operator subalgebra of the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight modules for the affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ of level $k$ are classified and constructed.
We present a vertex operator algebra which is an extension of the level $k$ vertex operator algebra for the $\hat{sl}_2$ conformal field theory. We construct monomial basis of its irreducible representations.
It is proved that a vertex operator algebra is isomorphic to the moonshine VOA of Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman if it satisfies certain conditions. Our two main theorems establish a weak version of the FLM uniqueness conjecture for the moonshine vertex operator algebra. We believe that these are the first such results.
The lattice vertex operator algebra $V_L$ associated to a positive definite even lattice $L$ has an automorphism of order 2 lifted from -1-isometry of $L$. We prove that for the fixed point vertex operator algebra $V_L^+$, any $\Z_{\geq0}$-graded weak modules is completely reducible.
The quantum dimensions and the fusion rules for the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight module for the affine Kac-Moody algebra A_1^{(1)} of level k are determined.
It is proved that the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight module for the affine Kac-Moody algebra A_1^{(1)} of level k coincides with a certain W-algebra. In particular, a set of generators for the parafermion vertex operator algebra is determined.
The fusion rules of the 2-permutation orbifold of an arbitrary lattice vertex operator algebra are determined by using the theory of quantum dimension.
The structure of the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to an integrable highest weight module for any affine Kac-Moody algebra is studied. In particular, a set of generators for this algebra has been determined.
This paper is about the orbifold theory of affine and parafermion vertex operator algebras. It is known that the parafermion vertex operator algebra $K(sl_2,k)$ associated to the integrable highest weight modules for the affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ is the building block of the general parafermion vertex operator $K(\mathfrak{g},k)$ for any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and any positive integer $k$. We first classify the irreducible modules of $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-orbifold of the simple affine vertex operator algebra of type $A_1^{(1)}$ and determine their fusion rul…
In this paper the W-algebra W(2,2) and its representation theory are studied. It is proved that a simple vertex operator algebra generated by two weight 2 vectors is either a vertex operator algebra associated to a highest irreducible W(2,2)-module or a tensor product of two irreducible Virasoro vertex operator algebras. Furthermore, any rational, C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra whose weight 1 subspace is zero and weight 2 subspace is 2-dimensional, and with central charge c=1 is isomorphic to L(1/2,0)\otimes L(1/2,0).
In this paper, we give a characterization of the rational vertex operator algebra VTL, where L is the root lattice of type A1 and T is the tetrahedral group.
In this thesis we develop an orbifold theory for a finite, cyclic group $G$ acting on a suitably regular, holomorphic vertex operator algebra $V$. To this end we describe the fusion algebra of the fixed-point vertex operator subalgebra $V^G$ and show that $V^G$ has group-like fusion. Then we solve the extension problem for vertex operator algebras with group-like fusion. We use these results to construct five new holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 as lattice orbifolds, contributing to the classification of the $V_1$-structures of suitably regular, holomorphic vertex oper…
For every $m \in {\C} \setminus \{0, -2\}$ and every nonnegative integer $k$ we define the vertex operator (super)algebra $D_{m,k}$ having two generators and rank $ \frac{3 m}{m + 2}$. If $m$ is a positive integer then $D_{m,k}$ can be realized as a subalgebra of a lattice vertex algebra. In this case, we prove that $D_{m,k}$ is a regular vertex operator (super)algebra and find the number of inequivalent irreducible modules.
This paper is an exposition of the representation theory of vertex operator algebras in terms of associative algebras A_n(V) and their bimodules. A new result on the rationality is given. That is, a simple vertex operator algebra V is rational if and only if its Zhu algebra A(V) is a semisimple associative algebra and each irreducible admissible $V$-module is ordinary.
The vertex operator algebras and modules associated to the highest weight modules for the Virasoro algebra over an arbitrary field F whose characteristic is not equal to 2 are studied. The irreducible modules of vertex operator algebra L(1/2,0)_F are classified. The rationality of L(1/2,0)_F is established if the characteristic of F is different from 7.
We introduce and study twist vertex operators for a (lower-bounded generalized) twisted modules for a grading-restricted vertex (super)algebra. We prove duality, weak associativity, a Jacobi identity, a generalized commutator formula, generalized weak commutativity, and convergence and commutativity for products of more than two operators involving twist vertex operators. These properties of twist vertex operators play an important role in the author's recent general, direct and explicit construction of (lower-bounded generalized) twisted modules.
We calculate the exchange relations of vertex operators of $U_q(\hat{sl_2})$ at level-two from its bosonic realization. The corresponding invertibility relation of type I vertex operators is also studied.
We construct bundles of modules of vertex operator algebras, and prove the rigidity and vanishing theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by such bundles. This result generalizes many previous results.
In this paper we study fields satisfying $N$-point locality and their properties. We obtain residue formulae for $N$-point local fields in terms of derivatives of delta functions and Bell polynomials. We introduce the notion of the space of descendants of $N$-point local fields which includes normal ordered products and coefficients of operator product expansions. We show that examples of $N$-point local fields include the vertex operators generating the boson-fermion correspondences of type B, C and D-A. We apply the normal ordered products of these vertex operators to the setting of the repr…
Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.
This is a continuation of our work to understand vertex operator algebras using the geometric properties of varieties attached to vertex operator algebras. For a class of vertex operator algebras including affine vertex operator algebras associated to a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we describe their varieties of semi-conformal vectors by some matrix equations. These matrix equations are too complicated to be solved for us. However, for affine vertex operator algebras associated to the simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we find the adjoint group $G$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ ac…
This is the first in a series of papers where we study logarithmic intertwining operators for various vertex subalgebras of Heisenberg vertex operator algebras. In this paper we examine logarithmic intertwining operators associated with rank one Heisenberg vertex operator algebra $M(1)_a$, of central charge $1-12a^2$. We classify these operators in terms of {\em depth} and provide explicit constructions in all cases. Furthermore, for $a=0$ we focus on the vertex operator subalgebra L(1,0) of $M(1)_0$ and obtain logarithmic intertwining operators among indecomposable Virasoro algebra modules. I…
We study the level-one irreducible highest weight representations of $U_q[\hat{gl(1|1)}]$ and associated q-vertex operators. We obtain the exchange relations satisfied by the vertex operators. The characters and supercharacters associated with these irreducible representations are calculated.
This is Part I of a series of papers constructing intertwining operator superalgebras and vertex tensor categories associated to the superconformal minimal models and other related models. In this paper, we construct the intertwining operator superalgebras and vertex tensor categories in the N=1 case.
It is the second paper in a series devoted to the investigation of characterizations of the exceptional vertex operator algebras of central charge 1. In this paper, we give a characterization of the rational vertex operator algebra VOL, where L is the root lattice of type A1 and O is the octahedral group.
We construct the intertwining operator superalgebras and vertex tensor categories for the N=2 superconformal unitary minimal models and other related models.
We present recent progress in theory of local conformal nets which is an operator algebraic approach to study chiral conformal field theory. We emphasize representation theoretic aspects and relations to theory of vertex operator algebras which gives a different and algebraic formulation of chiral conformal field theory.
We explain how to use a certain new "Jacobi identity" for vertex operator algebras, announced in a previous paper (math.QA/9909178), to interpret and generalize recent work of S. Bloch's relating values of the Riemann zeta function at negative integers with a certain Lie algebra of operators.
We announce a new type of "Jacobi identity" for vertex operator algebras, incorporating values of the Riemann zeta function at negative integers. Using this we "explain" and generalize some recent work of S. Bloch's relating values of the zeta function with the commutators of certain operators and Lie algebras of differential operators.
