We present a parameter study of self-consistent models of protoplanetary disks around Herbig AeBe stars. We use the code developed by Dullemond and Dominik, which solves the 2D radiative transfer problem including an iteration for the vertical hydrostatic structure of the disk. This grid of models will be used for several studies on disk emission and mineralogy in followup papers. In this paper we take a first look on the new models, compare them with previous modeling attempts and focus on the effects of various parameters on the overall structure of the SED that leads to the classification of Herbig AeBe stars into two groups, with a flaring (group I) or self-shadowed (group II) SED. We find that the parameter of overriding importance to the SED is the total mass in grains smaller than 25um, confirming the earlier results by Dullemond and Dominik. All other parameters studied have only minor influences, and will alter the SED type only in borderline cases. We find that there is no natural dichotomy between group I and II. From a modeling point of view, the transition is a continuous function of the small dust mass. We also show that moderate grain growth produces spectra with weak or no 1um feature, both for flaring (Group I) and non-flaring (Group II) sources. The fact that sources with weak features have been found mostly in Group I sources is therefore surprising and must be due to observational biases or evolutionary effects.
We present a statistical study of the X-Ray emission toward 22 Herbig AeBe stars using the Chandra archive. We probe the origin of the X-Rays toward Herbig stars: are they intrinsic? This question is addressed by correlations between the physical stellar properties and the X-Ray emission. There is a weak correlation between the continuum radio emission at lambda = 3.6cm and Lx, which suggests that the X-Ray emission depends upon the source. On the other hand, no correlation was found with the stellar rotational period, but that only excludes solar-like magnetic activity as the origin of the X-…
We present the change in the Halpha emission-line profile of the spectra of some AeBe Herbig stars. In the spectrum of VY Mon, Halpha may have one of three profile types: P Cyg, P Cyg III or single line in accordance with the brightness variations of the star. HD259431 now shows a double Halpha profile with the red component stronger than the blue component, while in the earlier observations the blue peak was higher than the red peak. Finally, the last Halpha profile of LkHalpha215 is very similar to that obtained by Finkenzeller et al.
We present the analysis of FUSE observations of two Herbig AeBe stars known to harbor young circumstellar disks: HD 100546 and HD 163296. In both cases we detect absorption lines from warm and dense H2. The thermalization of the rotational levels up to J~4 allows evaluation of the temperature, density and typical size of the absorbing layer. These quantities are consistent with absorption of the light of the central star by a thin layer of a circumstellar disk seen at an intermediate inclination.
We present 7 mm and 3.5 cm wavelength continuum observations toward the Herbig AeBe star HD169142 performed with the Very Large Array (VLA) with an angular resolution of ~1". We find that this object exhibits strong (~4.4 mJy), unresolved (~1") 7 mm continuum emission, being one of the brightest isolated Herbig AeBe stars ever detected with the VLA at this wavelength. No emission is detected at 3.5 cm continuum, with a 3 sigma upper limit of ~0.08 mJy. From these values, we obtain a spectral index of ~2.5 in the 3.5 cm to 7 mm wavelength range, indicating that the observed flux density at 7mm …
We present a study of the stellar parameters, distances and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of HD 34282 and HD 141569, two pre-main sequence Herbig AeBe stars. Both objects have been reported to show `anomalous positions' in the HR diagram in the sense that they appear below the main sequence. A significant result of this work is that both stars are metal-deficient. The {\it Hipparcos} distance of HD 34282 is very uncertain and the current study places the star at the expected evolutionary position in the HR diagram, i.e. as a PMS star. The distance for HD 141569 found in this work matche…
We present spectra of four Herbig AeBe stars obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All four of the sources show strong emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), with the 6.2 um emission feature shifted to 6.3 um and the strongest C-C skeletal-mode feature occuring at 7.9 um instead of at 7.7 um as is often seen. Remarkably, none of the four stars have silicate emission. The strength of the 7.9 um feature varies with respect to the 11.3 um feature among the sources, indicating that we have observed PAHs with a range of ionization fractions. …
We present spectra of a sample of Herbig Ae and Be (HAeBe) stars obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All but one of the Herbig stars show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and seven of the spectra show PAH emission, but no silicate emission at 10 microns. The central wavelengths of the 6.2, 7.7--8.2, and 11.3 micron emission features decrease with stellar temperature, indicating that the PAHs are less photo-processed in cooler radiation fields. The apparent low level of photo processing in HAeBe stars, relative to other PAH emission sourc…
Using the HiVIS spectropolarimeter built for the Haleakala 3.7m AEOS telescope, we have obtained a large number of high precision spectropolarimetrc observations (284) of Herbig AeBe stars collected over 53 nights totaling more than 300 hours of observing. Our sample of five HAeBe stars: AB Aurigae, MWC480, MWC120, MWC158 and HD58647, all show systematic variations in the linear polarization amplitude and direction as a function of time and wavelength near the H-alpha line. In all our stars, the H-alpha line profiles show evidence of an intervening disk or outflowing wind, evidenced by strong …
Using data from the EROS2 microlensing survey, we report the discovery of two blue objects with irregular photometric behaviour of $ΔV \sim 0.1$-0.4 mag on time scales of 20 to 200 days. They show a bluer when fainter behaviour. Subsequent spectra taken with the ESO 3.6m telescope show spectral type B4eIII and B2eIV-V with strong $H α$ emission. These objects resemble the Herbig AeBe but also classical Be stars. At this stage, it is not possible to distinguish unambiguously between pre-main sequence and classical Be nature. If we favour the pre-main sequence interpretation, they are more lumin…
We have calculated the (sub-)mm spectral indices of 26 Herbig Ae/Be stars, for which we can determine the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED). We find a clear correlation between the strength of the ratio of the near- to mid-infrared excess of these sources, and the slope of the (sub-)mm energy distribution. Based on earlier multi-dimensional modeling of disks around Herbig Ae stars, we interpret this as a correlation between the geometry of the disk (flared or self-shadowed) and the size of the grains: self-shadowed disks have, on average, larger grains than their flared counterparts.…
We have carried out a high-sensitivity search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars in the continuum at 1.4mm and 2.7mm using the IRAM interferometer at the Plateau de Bure (PdBI) . In this letter, we report data on three well studied B0 stars, MWC 1080, MWC 137 and R Mon. The two latter have also been observed in the continuum at 0.7 cm and 1.3 cm using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) . We report the detection of circumstellar disks around MWC 1080 and R Mon with masses of Md ~ 0.003 and 0.01 Msun, respectively, while for MWC 137 we estimate a disk mass upper limit of 0.007 Msun. Our…
IR and mm-wave emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars has produced conflicting conclusions regarding the dust geometry in these objects. We show that the compact dimensions of the mm-wave emitting regions are a decisive indication for disks. But a disk cannot explain the spectral energy distribution (SED) unless it is embedded in an extended envelope that (1) dominates the IR emission and (2) provides additional disk heating on top of the direct stellar radiation. Detailed radiative transfer calculations based on the simplest model for envelope-embedded disks successfully fit the data from UV to mm …
We present simulations of the interferometric visibilities of Herbig Ae star disks. We investigate whether interferometric measurements in the 10 micrometer atmospheric window are sensitive to the presence of an increased scale height at the inner disk edge, predicted by recent models. Furthermore, we investigate whether such measurements can discriminate between disks with a ``flaring'' geometry and disks with a ``flat'' geometry. We show that both these questions can be addressed, using measurements at a small number of appropriately chosen baselines. The classification of Herbig Ae stars in…
Physical models of circumstellar disks surrounding pre-main sequence stars are currently constrained primarily by the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the system. Here we present first results from a survey of nearby Herbig Ae stars using nulling interferometry. We measure the spatial extent of the mid-IR emission for the stars HD 150193, HD 163296, and HD 179218. The results indicate the size of mid-infrared emission around Herbig Ae stars may be much smaller than current models predict. The observations constrain ~90% of the 10 micron flux to be within an approximately 20 AU diameter re…
We completed a search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure (PdB) interferometers. We present our new VLA and PdBI data for the three objects MWC 297, Z CMa, and LKHa 215. We constructed the SED from near-IR to centimeter wavelengths by adding our millimeter and centimeter data to the available data at other wavelengths, mainly Spitzer images. The entire SED was fitted using a disk+envelope model. In addition, we compiled all the disk millimeter observations in the literature and completed a statistical analysis of all…
We present the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of five nearby Herbig Ae/Be stars at 4.7 micron: UX Ori, HD 34282, HD 50138, V380 Ori, HK Ori. The goal was to search for CO fundamental ro-vibrational emission. None of the targets show CO features, either in absorption nor in emission. We derive a 5sigma upper limit of < 10^-12 cm^-2 to the column density of hot CO (T ~ 1500 K) in the sources. These upper limits are considerably lower than the values of Herbig Ae/Be stars for which warm and hot CO emission has been reported. The non-detection of CO v=1-0 emission in these five targets s…
We report new millimeter observations of the circumstellar material surrounding the Herbig Ae A0.5 star HD 34282 performed with the IRAM array in CO J=2-1 and in continuum at 1.3 mm. These observations have revealed the existence of a large Keplerian disk around the star. We have analysed simultaneously the line and continuum emissions to derive the physical properties of both the gas and the dust. The analysis of our observations also shows that the Hipparcos distance to the star is somewhat underestimated ; the actual distance is probably about 400 pc. With this distance the disk around HD 3…
We present Submillimeter Array observations of the Herbig Ae star HD169142 in 1.3 millimeter continuum emission and 12CO J=2-1 line emission at 1.5 arcsecond resolution that reveal a circumstellar disk. The continuum emission is centered on the star position and resolved, and provides a mass estimate of about 0.02 solar masses for the disk. The CO images show patterns in position and velocity that are well matched by a disk in Keplerian rotation with low inclination to the line-of-sight. We use radiative transfer calculations based on a flared, passive disk model to constrain the disk paramete…
We use spectrally dispersed near-IR interferometry data to constrain the temperature profiles of sub-AU-sized regions of 11 Herbig Ae/Be sources. We find that a single-temperature ring does not reproduce the data well. Rather, models incorporating radial temperature gradients are preferred. These gradients may arise in a dusty disk, or may reflect separate gas and dust components with different temperatures and spatial distributions. Comparison of our models with broadband spectral energy distributions suggests the latter explanation. The data support the view that the near-IR emission of Herb…
We have observed 14 Herbig Ae/Be sources with the long-baseline near-IR Palomar Testbed Interferometer, All except two sources are resolved at 2.2 um, with angular sizes generally <5 mas. We determine the size scales and orientations of the 2.2 um emission using various models: uniform disks, Gaussians, uniform rings, flat accretion disks with inner holes, and flared disks with puffed-up inner rims; 7 objects display significantly inclined morphologies, generally compatible with the outer disk geometries inferred from millimeter interferometric observations, implying that HAEBE disks are not s…
In this Letter we investigate the origin of the near-infrared emission of the Herbig Ae star MWC 758 on sub-astronomical unit (AU) scales using spectrally dispersed low resolution (R=35) AMBER/VLTI interferometric observations both in the H ($1.7 μ$m) and K ($2.2 μ$m) bands. We find that the K band visibilities and closure phases are consistent with the presence of a dusty disk inner rim located at the dust evaporation distance (0.4 AU) while the bulk of the H band emission arises within 0.1 AU from the central star. Comparing the observational results with theoretical model predictions, we su…
We studied the geometry of the inner (AU-scale) circumstellar environment around the Herbig Be star MWC 147. Combining, for the first time, near- (NIR, K band) and mid-infrared (MIR, N band) spectro-interferometry on a Herbig star, our VLTI/MIDI and AMBER data constrain not only the geometry of the brightness distribution, but also the radial temperature distribution in the disk. For our detailed modeling of the interferometric data and the spectral energy distribution, we employ 2-D radiation transfer simulations, showing that passive irradiated Keplerian dust disks can easily fit the SED, bu…
The geometrical relationship between the distribution of circumstellar matter, observed optical linear polarization, outflows and binary orbital plane in Herbig Ae/Be stars is investigated. Optical linear polarization measurements carried out for a number of Herbig Ae/Be stars that are either known to be in binary systems and/or have bipolar jets are presented in this paper. Available information on the position angles of polarization, outflows and binary companions for Herbig Ae/Be stars is compiled and analysed for any possible correlations. In $\approx 85%$ of the sources the outflow positi…
We present high resolution 0.45" x 0.32" observations from the BIMA array toward the Herbig Ae system MWC 480 in the lambda = 1.4 mm dust continuum. We resolve a circumstellar disk of radius ~170 AU and constrain the disk parameters by comparing the observations to flat disk models. These results show that the typical fit parameters of the disk, such as the mass, Md ~ 0.04-0.18 Mo, and the surface density power law index, p=0.5 or 1, are comparable to those of the lower mass T Tauri stars. The dust in the MWC 480 disk can be modeled as processed dust material (beta ~ 0.8), similar to the Herbi…
The spectral shape of IR emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars has been invoked as evidence for accretion disks around high-mass protostars. Instead, we present here models based on spherical envelopes with $r^{-1.5}$ dust density profile that successfully explain the observed spectral shapes. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of eight primary candidates for protostellar disks are fitted in detail for all wavelengths available, from visual to far IR. The only envelope property adjusted in individual sources is the overall visual optical depth, and it ranges from 0.3 to 3. In each case, our m…
We have discovered an optically thick, edge-on circumstellar disk around a Herbig Ae star in the binary system PDS 144, providing the first intermediate-mass analog of HK Tau and similar T Tauris. This system consists of a V ~ 13 mag. primary and a fainter companion, with spectra of both stars showing evidence for circumstellar disks and accretion; both stars were classified as Herbig Aes by the Pico dos Dias survey. In Lick adaptive optics polarimetry, we resolved extended polarized light scattered from dust around the northern star. Followup Keck adaptive optics and mid-infrared observations…
Infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering a time span of a quarter century are presented for HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 (MWC 275). Both are isolated Herbig Ae stars that exhibit signs of active accretion, including driving bipolar flows with embedded Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. HD 163296 was found to be relatively quiescent photometrically in its inner disk region, with the exception of a major increase in emitted flux in a broad wavelength region centered near 3 microns in 2002. In contrast, HD 31648 has exhibited sporadic changes in the entire 3-13 micron region throughout this span …
We present evidence of magnetically-mediated disk accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. Magnetospheric accretion models of Balmer and sodium profiles calculated with appropriate stellar and rotational parameters are in qualitative agreement with the observed profiles of the Herbig Ae star UX Ori, and yield a mass accretion rate of ~ 10^{-8} Msun/yr. If more recent indications of an extremely large rotation rate for this object are correct, the magnetic field geometry must deviate from that of a standard dipole in order to produce line emission consistent with observed flux levels. Models of the ass…
An analysis of solid-state features in infrared spectra of 46 Herbig Ae/Be stars is presented. The presence of solid-state emission bands is compared to other indicators of circumstellar material, such as Halpha emission, optical variability and sub-mm continuum fluxes. The correlation between these different indicators is weak, if present at all, in our sample. However, a strong dependence on spectral type of the central star seems to be present: stars with spectral type earlier than B9 show either amorphous silicate in absorption or infrared spectra dominated by PAH emission, whereas more th…
We present high spectral-resolution optical spectra of 49 Herbig Ae/Be stars in a search for the [O I] 6300.2 A line. The vast majority of the stars in our sample show narrow (FWHM < 100 km/s) emission lines, centered on the stellar radial velocity. Some stars in our sample show double-peaked lines profiles, with peak-to-peak separations of about 10 km/s. The presence and strength of the [O I] line emission appears to be well correlated with the far-infrared energy distribution of each source: stars with a strong excess at 60 micron have in general stronger [O I] emission than stars with weake…
We present a new mode of observations with VISIR, the mid-InfraRed (mid-IR) imager and spectrometer on the VLT (ESO, Chile): the so-called BURST mode. This mode allows to reach the diffraction limit of the telescope. To illustrate results obtained with this mode, we discuss observations of disks around Herbig Ae stars. These stars are the more massive analogues of T Tauri stars and are believed to harbour circumstellar disks. The 10-20 microns atmospheric windows are well-suited to study the extended emission of these objects. With a 8 m class telescope, in fair seeing conditions, the observat…
We construct a protostellar disk model that takes into account the combined effect of viscous evolution, photoevaporation and the differential radial motion of dust grains and gas. For T Tauri disks, the lifetimes of dust disks that are mainly composed of millimeter sized grains are always shorter than the gas disks' lifetimes, and become similar only when the grains are fluffy (density < 0.1 g cm^{-3}). If grain growth during the classical T Tauri phase produces plenty of millimeter sized grains, such grains completely accrete onto the star in 10^7 yr, before photoevaporation begins to drain …
We present mid-infrared nulling interferometric and direct imaging observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 100546 obtained with the Magellan I (Baade) 6.5 m telescope. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission at 10.3, 11.7, 12.5, 18.0, and 24.5 microns. Through the nulling observations (10.3, 11.7 and 12.5 microns), we detect a circumstellar disk, with an inclination of 45 +- 15 degrees with respect to a face-on disk, a semimajor axis position angle of 150 +- 10 degrees (E of N), and a spatial extent of about 25 AU. The direct images (18.0 and 24.5 microns) show evidence for cooler …
We present high resolution spectroscopic mid-infrared observations of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star HD97048 with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR). We detect the S(1) pure rotational line of molecular hydrogen (H2) at 17.035 microns arising from the disk around the star. This detection reinforces the claim that HD97048 is a young object surrounded by a flared disk at an early stage of evolution. The emitting warm gas is located within the inner 35 AU of the disk. The line-to-continuum flux ratio is much higher than expected from models of disks at …
We discuss spectral energy distributions of a sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars in the context of a passive irradiated disk model. The data have been presented earlier by Meeus et al (2001), and preliminary interpretations of these data were given in that paper. While the spectra of Herbig Ae stars all show similarities, there is significant variation between the spectra, in particular in the shape of the mid-IR rise and in the presence or absence of a silicate feature. We explore the hypothesis that all these different spectra can be interpreted as pure disk spectra without additional components. …
We investigate the presence and properties of PAHs on the surface of circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars by comparing the predictions of disk models with observations. We present results of a radiation transfer code for disks heated by the central star, in hydrostatic equilibrium in the vertical direction (flared disks). The dust is a mixture of large grains in thermal equilibrium, transiently heated small grains and PAHs. Special attention is given to the influence of the stellar, disk and PAHs properties on the strength of the PAH emission lines and their spatial distribution. The …
In this paper the two-dimensional structure of protoplanetary disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars is studied. This is done by constructing a self-consistent model based on 2-D radiative transfer coupled to the equation of vertical hydrostatics. As a simplifying assumption a grey opacity is used. It is found that the disk can adopt four different structures, dependent on the surface density distribution Sigma(R) as a function of radius, i.e. on radial- and vertical optical depth of the disk. For the case of high to intermediate vertical optical depth, the temperature and density structures are in a…
We present mid-infrared interferometric observations of the Herbig Ae star R CrA obtained with MIDI at the VLTI using several projected baselines in the UT2-UT3 configuration. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission in the wavelength range 8-13 micron on a ~6 AU scale with a non-symmetric intensity distribution, providing support for an inclined disk geometry. Visibilities are best fitted using a uniform ring model with outer radius in the range 6-10 AU, in the wavelength range 8-13 micron. The inclination of the ring with respect to the plane of the sky is found to be ~45 deg., …
In this paper we present detailed models of the vertical structure (temperature and density) of passive irradiated circumstellar disks around T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. In contrast to earlier work, we use full frequency- and angle-dependent radiative transfer instead of the usual moment equations. We find that this improvement of the radiative transfer has strong influence on the resulting vertical structure of the disk, with differences in temperature as large as 70 %. However, the spectral energy distribution (SED) is only mildly affected by this change. In fact, the SED compares reason…
We report the discovery of a circumbinary disk around the Herbig Ae/Be system v892 Tau. Our detailed mid-infrared images were made using segment-tilting interferometry on the Keck-1 Telescope and reveal an asymmetric disk inclined at ~60 degs with an inner hole diameter of 250 mas (35 AU), approximately 5X larger than the apparent separation of the binary components. In addition, we report a new measurement along the binary orbit using near-infrared Keck aperture masking, allowing a crude estimate of orbital parameters and the system mass for the first time. The size of the inner hole appears …
We present infrared (IR) spectrophotometry ($R \simeq 180$) of three Herbig Ae/Be stars surrounded by possible protoplanetary disks: HD 150193, HD100546 and HD 179218. We construct a mid-IR spectral energy distributions (SED) for each object by using $7.6 - 13.2$ \micron HIFOGS spectra, 2.4 -- 45 \micron\ spectrophotometry from the {\it ISO} SWS, the 12, 25, 60, and 100 \micron\ photometric points from IRAS, and for HD 179218, photometric bolometric data points from the Mt. Lemmon Observing Facility. The SEDs are modeled by using an expanded version of the \citet{chigol97} two-layer, radiative…
We report the results of a sensitive K-band survey of Herbig Ae/Be disk sizes using the 85-m baseline Keck Interferometer. Targets were chosen to span the maximum range of stellar properties to probe the disk size dependence on luminosity and effective temperature. For most targets, the measured near-infrared sizes (ranging from 0.2 to 4 AU) support a simple disk model possessing a central optically-thin (dust-free) cavity, ringed by hot dust emitting at the expected sublimation temperatures (T_sub~1000-1500K). Furthermore, we find a tight correlation of disk size with source luminosity R prop…
We improve upon the radiative, hydrostatic equilibrium models of passive circumstellar disks constructed by Chiang & Goldreich (1997). New features include (1) account for a range of particle sizes, (2) employment of laboratory-based optical constants of representative grain materials, and (3) numerical solution of the equations of radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium within the original 2-layer (disk surface + disk interior) approximation. We explore how the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a face-on disk depends on grain size distributions, disk geometries and surface densities, and st…
We present Halpha spectropolarimetry observations of a sample of 10 bright T Tauri stars, supplemented with new Herbig Ae/Be star data. A change in the linear polarisation across Halpha is detected in most of the T Tauri (9/10) and Herbig Ae (9/11) objects, which we interpret in terms of a compact source of line photons that is scattered off a rotating accretion disk. We find consistency between the position angle (PA) of the polarisation and those of imaged disk PAs from infrared and millimetre imaging and interferometry studies, probing much larger scales. For the Herbig Ae stars AB Aur, MWC…
We have investigated the infrared spectra of all 46 Herbig Ae/Be stars for which spectroscopic data is available in the ISO data archive. Our quantitative analysis of these spectra focusses on the emission bands linked to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the amorphous 10 micron silicate band and the crystalline silicate band at 11.3 micron. We have detected PAH emission in 57% of the Herbig stars in our sample. Clear examples of differences in the PAH spectra are present within our sample, indicating differences in PAH size, chemistry and/or ionization. Amorphous silicate emission was …
Aims: To calculate chemistry and gas temperature of evolving protoplanetary disks with decreasing mass or dust settling, and to explore the sensitivity of gas-phase tracers. Methods: The density and dust temperature profiles for a range of models of flaring and self-shadowed disks around a typical Herbig Ae star are used together with 2-dimensional ultraviolet (UV) radiative transfer to calculate the chemistry and gas temperature. In each model the line profiles and intensities for the fine structure lines of [O I], [C II] and [C I] and the pure rotational lines of CO, CN, HCN and HCO+ are det…
We have carried out a study of the early type stars in nearby OB associations spanning an age range of $\sim$ 3 to 16 Myr, with the aim of determining the fraction of stars which belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class. We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby ($\le 500$ pc) OB associations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1, with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in these associations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visual extinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, using Hipparcos ph…
Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar material. The observations were made at a wavelength of 20.5 $μ$m with the CAMIRAS camera mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We report the ob…
Isolated Herbig Ae stars can be divided into two groups (Meeus et al. 2001): those with an almost flat spectral energy distribution in the mid-infrared (`group I'), and those with a strong decline towards the far-infrared (`group II'). In this paper we show that the group I vs. II distinction can be understood as arising from flaring vs. self-shadowed disks. We show that these two types of disks are natural solutions of the 2-D radiation-hydrostatic structure equations. Disks with high optical depth turn out to be flaring and have a strong far-IR emission, while disks with an optical depth bel…
We present high sensitivity sub-arcsecond resolution images of the Herbig Ae star AB Aurigae at 11.6 and 18.5 microns taken with Michelle on Gemini North. Bright extended dust emission close to the star is resolved at both wavelengths, with quadratically subtracted FWHM of 17+/-4 AU at 11.6 microns and 22+/-5 AU at 18.5 microns. Additional, fainter emission is detected out to a radius of 280 AU at 11.6 microns and 350 AU at 18.5 microns down to the sensitivity limit of the observations. The latter value is identical to the measured size of the millimeter-continuum disk, but much smaller than t…
We present spatially resolved near-IR spectroscopic observations of 15 young stars. Using a grism spectrometer behind the Keck Interferometer, we obtained an angular resolution of a few milli-arcseconds and a spectral resolution of 230, enabling probes of both gas and dust in the inner disks surrounding the target stars. We find that the angular size of the near-IR emission typically increases with wavelength, indicating hot, presumably gaseous material within the dust sublimation radius. Our data also clearly indicate Brackett-gamma emission arising from hot hydrogen gas, and suggest the pres…
We have observed the Herbig Ae/Be sources AB Aur, VV Ser, V1685 Cyg (BD+40 4124), AS 442, and MWC 1080 with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer, obtaining the longest baseline near-IR interferometric observations of this class of objects. All of the sources are resolved at 2.2 microns with angular size scales generally <5 mas, consistent with the only previous near-IR interferometric measurements of Herbig Ae/Be stars by Millan-Gabet and collaborators. We determine the angular size scales and orientations predicted by uniform disk, Gaussian, ring, and accretion disk models. Although it is diffi…
We have carried out a survey of 60 Herbig Ae/Be stars in the 3 micron wavelength region in search for the rare spectral features at 3.43 and 3.53 micron. These features have been attributed to the presence of large, hot, hydrogen-terminated nanodiamonds. Only two Herbig Ae/Be stars, HD 97048 and Elias 3-1 are known to display both these features. We have obtained medium-resolution spectra (R ~2500) with the ESO near-IR instrument ISAAC in the 3.15-3.65 micron range. In our sample, no new examples of sources with prominent nanodiamond features in their 3 micron spectra were discovered (detectio…
The results of single-dish observations of low- and high-J transitions of selected molecules from protoplanetary disks around two TTauri stars (LkCa15 and TWHya) and two HerbigAe stars (HD163296 and MWC480) are reported. Simple molecules such as CO, 13CO, HCO+, CN and HCN are detected. Several lines of H2CO are found toward the TTauri star LkCa15 but not in other objects. No CH3OH has been detected down to abundances of 10E-9 - 10E-8 with respect to H2. SO and CS lines have been searched for without success. Line ratios indicate that the molecular emission arises from dense 10E6 - 10E8 cm-3 an…
We present the results of 10 micron nulling interferometric observations of 13 Herbig Ae stars using the Magellan I (Baade) and the MMT 6.5 m telescopes. A portion of the observations was completed with the adaptive secondary at the MMT. We have conclusively spatially resolved 3 of the 13 stars, HD 100546, AB Aur, and HD 179218, the latter two recently resolved using adaptive optics in combination with nulling interferometry. For the resolved objects we find that the 10 $μ$m emitting regions have a spatial extent of 15-30 AU in diameter. We also have some evidence for resolved emission surroun…
We have used mid-infrared long-baseline interferometry with MIDI at the VLTI to resolve the circumstellar material around the Herbig Ae star HR 5999, providing the first direct measurement of its angular size, and to derive constraints on the spatial distribution of the dust. A set of ten spectrally dispersed (8-13 micron) interferometric measurements of HR 5999 was obtained. The characteristic size of the emission region depends on the projected baseline length and position angle, and it ranges between ~ 5-15 milliarcseconds (Gauss FWHM), corresponding to remarkably small physical sizes of ~ …
The detection and characterization of accretion processes in the disks surrounding young stars may be directly relevant to studies of planet formation. Especially the study of systems with very low accretion rates (<< 10^{-10} M_sun yr^{-1}) is important, since at those rates radial mixing becomes inefficient and disk material will have to be dissipated into larger bodies at its present location. In these proceedings, we compare the different methods of tracing accretion onto Herbig Ae/Be stars and conclude that high-resolution infrared spectroscopy is currently the only reliable method that o…
Aims: Today, large ground-based instruments, like VISIR on the VLT, providing diffraction-limited (about 0.3 arcsec) images in the mid-infrared where strong PAH features appear enable us to see the flaring structure of the disks around Herbig Ae stars. Although great progress has been made in modelling the disk with radiative transfer models able to reproduce the spectral energy distribution (SED) of Herbig Ae stars, the constraints brought by images have not been yet fully exploited. Here, we are interested in checking if these new observational imaging constraints can be accounted for by pre…
Accretion rates from disks around pre-main sequence stars are of importance for our understanding of planetary formation and disk evolution. We provide in this paper estimates of the mass accretion rates in the disks around a large sample of Herbig Ae stars. We obtained medium resolution 2 micron spectra and used the results to compute values of Macc from the measured luminosity of the Br_gamma emission line, using a well established correlation between L(Br_gamma) and the accretion luminosity Lacc. We find that 80% of the stars, all of which have evidence of an associated circumstellar disk, …
We present adaptive optics high angular resolution ($\sim0.1\arcsec$) spectroscopic observations in the 3 \um region of eight well known Herbig Ae/Be stars with circumstellar disks. We detect the aromatic emission feature at 3.3 \um for four out of six of our objects with flared disks (HD 169142, HD 97048, HD 100453, HD 100546), some weaker additional features at 3.4 and 3.46 $μ$m and nanodiamond features at 3.43 and 3.53 \um in two of our flared object (HD 100546 and HD 97048 respectively). We also detect hydrogen recombination line at 3.74 \um in practically all objects. The emission in the …
