We present spatially resolved near-IR spectroscopic observations of 15 young stars. Using a grism spectrometer behind the Keck Interferometer, we obtained an angular resolution of a few milli-arcseconds and a spectral resolution of 230, enabling probes of both gas and dust in the inner disks surrounding the target stars. We find that the angular size of the near-IR emission typically increases with wavelength, indicating hot, presumably gaseous material within the dust sublimation radius. Our data also clearly indicate Brackett-gamma emission arising from hot hydrogen gas, and suggest the presence of water vapor and carbon monoxide gas in the inner disks of several objects. This gaseous emission is more compact than the dust continuum emission in all cases. We construct simple physical models of the inner disk and fit them to our data to constrain the spatial distribution and temperature of dust and gas emission components.
We present Halpha spectropolarimetry observations of a sample of 10 bright T Tauri stars, supplemented with new Herbig Ae/Be star data. A change in the linear polarisation across Halpha is detected in most of the T Tauri (9/10) and Herbig Ae (9/11) objects, which we interpret in terms of a compact source of line photons that is scattered off a rotating accretion disk. We find consistency between the position angle (PA) of the polarisation and those of imaged disk PAs from infrared and millimetre imaging and interferometry studies, probing much larger scales. For the Herbig Ae stars AB Aur, MWC…
Intermediate dispersion spectroscopic observations of 37 Herbig Ae/Be stars reveal that the equivalent widths of their [OI] 6300A and Halpha emission lines, are related to their near-infrared colours in the same fashion as the T-Tauri stars. Such a correlation strongly supports the idea that the winds from Herbig Ae/Be stars arise in the same manner as those from T-Tauri stars, i.e. through accretion driven mass-loss. We also find that the [OI] 6300A line luminosity correlates better with excess infrared luminosity than with stellar luminosities, again supporting the idea that Herbig Ae/Be win…
In this paper we present detailed models of the vertical structure (temperature and density) of passive irradiated circumstellar disks around T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. In contrast to earlier work, we use full frequency- and angle-dependent radiative transfer instead of the usual moment equations. We find that this improvement of the radiative transfer has strong influence on the resulting vertical structure of the disk, with differences in temperature as large as 70 %. However, the spectral energy distribution (SED) is only mildly affected by this change. In fact, the SED compares reason…
We present VLT-FORS2 optical (5700 - 9400 A) spectroscopy of close (r < 1.5'') companions to three nearby (d < 200 pc) Herbig Ae/Be stars (HD 144432, HD 150193, KK Oph) and one T Tauri star (S CrA). We report the detection of Li I (6707 A) in absorption and emission lines (Halpha, Ca II triplet) in the spectra of the companions. Our observations strongly suggest that the companions are physically associated pre-main-sequence stars. The spectral type derived for the companions is K5Ve for HD 144432 B, F9Ve for HD 150193 B, and G6Ve for KK Oph B. S CrA A and B were observed simultaneously. The s…
We improve upon the radiative, hydrostatic equilibrium models of passive circumstellar disks constructed by Chiang & Goldreich (1997). New features include (1) account for a range of particle sizes, (2) employment of laboratory-based optical constants of representative grain materials, and (3) numerical solution of the equations of radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium within the original 2-layer (disk surface + disk interior) approximation. We explore how the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a face-on disk depends on grain size distributions, disk geometries and surface densities, and st…
We present nine epochs of Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging of the bipolar outflow from the pre-main sequence binary XZ Tauri. Our data monitors the system from 1995-2005 and includes emission line images of the flow. The northern lobe appears to be a succession of bubbles, the outermost of which expanded ballistically from 1995-1999 but in 2000 began to deform and decelerate along its forward edge. It reached an extent of 6" from the binary in 2005. A larger and fainter southern counterbubble was detected for the first time in deep ACS images from 2004. Traces of shocked emission are see…
Aims: We search for PAH features towards T Tauri stars and compare them with surveys of Herbig Ae/Be stars. The presence and strength of the PAH features are interpreted with disk radiative transfer models exploring the PAH feature dependence on the incident UV radiation, PAH abundance and disk parameters. Methods: Spitzer Space Telescope 5-35 micron spectra of 54 pre-main sequence stars with disks were obtained, consisting of 38 T Tauri, 7 Herbig Ae/Be and 9 stars with unknown spectral type. Results: Compact PAH emission is detected towards at least 8 sources of which 5 are Herbig Ae/Be stars…
Our aim is to determine the presence and location of the emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) towards low and intermediate mass young stars with disks using large aperture telescopes. VLT-VISIR N-band spectra and VLT-ISAAC and VLT-NACO L-band spectra of 29 sources are presented, spectrally resolving the 3.3, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.6 micron PAH features. Spatial-extent profiles of the features and the continuum emission are derived and used to associate the PAH emission with the disks. The results are discussed in the context of recent PAH-emission disk models. The 3.3, 8.6, and 11.…
We present the results of HST/STIS and WFPC2 observations of LkHa 233 and its environment. LkHa233 is a Herbig Ae/Be star with a collimated bipolar jet. We investigate optical forbidden lines along the LkHa 233 jet to determine physical parameters of this jet (electron density n_e, hydrogen ionisation fraction x_e, electron temperature T_e, and mass density n_H). The knowledge of these parameters allows us a direct comparison of a jet from a Herbig star with those from T Tauri stars. The WFPC2 images in broad-band filters clearly show a dark lane caused either by a circumstellar disk or a dust…
We present new X-ray observations of the nearby Herbig Ae star HD 104237 (= DX Cha) with XMM-Newton, whose objective is to clarify the origin of the emission. Several X-ray emission lines are clearly visible in the CCD spectra, including the high-temperature Fe K-alpha complex. The emission can be accurately modeled as a multi-temperature thermal plasma with cool (kT < 1 keV) and hot (kT > 3 keV) components. The presence of a hot component is compelling evidence that the X-rays originate in magnetically confined plasma, either in the Herbig star itself or in the corona of an as yet unseen late…
We present Chandra-HETGS observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 104237 and the associated young stars comprising lower mass stars, in the 0.15-1.75\msol mass range, in their pre-main sequence phase. The brightest X-ray source in the association is the central system harboring the Herbig Ae primary, and a K3 companion. Its X-ray variability indicates modulation possibly on time scales of the rotation period of the Herbig Ae star, and this would imply that the primary significantly contributes to the overall emission. The spectrum of the Herbig Ae+K3 system shows a soft component significantly mo…
[abridged] We present high resolution optical spectra of stars in Taurus-Auriga whose circumstellar environment suggests that they are less evolved than optically revealed T Tauri stars. Many of the stars are seen only via scattered light. These spectra are used to search for differences between stars which power Herbig-Haro flows and stars which do not, and to reassess the evolutionary state of so-called protostars (Class I stars) relative to optically revealed T Tauri stars (Class II stars). The stellar mass distribution of Class I stars is similar to that of Class II stars and includes 3 Cl…
The interpretation of X-ray detections from Herbig Ae/Be stars is disputed as it is not clear if these intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars are able to drive a dynamo and ensuing phenomena of magnetic activity. Alternative X-ray production mechanisms, related to stellar winds, star-disk magnetospheres, or unresolved late-type T Tauri star companions have been proposed. In a series of papers we have been investigating high-resolution X-ray Chandra images of Herbig Ae/Be and main-sequence B-type stars to test the T Tauri hypothesis by spatially resolving known visual companions from the pri…
For young Herbig Ae/Be stars, near-infrared interferometric measurements have revealed a correlation between the luminosity of the central object and the position of the disk inner rim. This correlation breaks down for the cooler T Tauri stars, a fact often interpreted in terms of disks with larger inner radii. In most cases, the conversion between the observed interferometric visibility and the calculated disk inner radius was done with a crude disk emission model. Here, we examine how the use of models that neglect scattered light can lead to an overestimation of the disk sizes. To do so, sy…
We present linear spectropolarimetric data for eight Herbig Be and four Herbig Ae stars at H alpha, H beta and H gamma. Changes in the linear polarisation are detected across all Balmer lines for a large fraction of the observed objects, confirming that the small-scale regions surrounding these objects are flattened (i.e. disk-like). Furthermore, all objects with detections show similar characteristics at the three spectral lines, despite differences in transition probability and optical depth going from H alpha to H gamma. A large fraction of early Herbig Be stars (B0-B3) observed show line d…
In this article we present the results from mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 14 T Tauri stars with silicate emission. The qualitative analysis of the spectra reveals a correlation between the strength of the silicate feature and its shape similar to the one which was found recently for the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars by van Boekel et al. (2003). The comparison with theoretical spectra of amorphous olivine with different grain sizes suggests that this correlation is indicating grain growth in the disks of T Tauri stars. Similar mechanisms of grain processing appear to be effective i…
Aims: We search for direct evidence of ongoing star formation by accretion in the Lagoon Nebula (M8), using optical wide-field narrow-band imaging obtained at La Silla Observatory. Methods: We examine [SII] and Halpha images for line-emission features that could be interpreted as signatures of outflow activity of the exciting sources. Results: We discover five new Herbig-Haro objects, study in detail their morphology and attempt to identify their potential driving sources among the population of T Tauri stars and embedded sources in the surroundings. Conclusions: The results reported here conc…
Using UBVRI Halpha CCD photometric observations and the archival NIR and X-ray data, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a young star cluster NGC 7419. An age of 22.5+/-3.0 Myr and a distance of 3230^{+330}_{-430} pc are derived for the cluster with a higher value of color excess ratio E(U-B)/E(B-V) than the normal one. There is an evidence for mass segregation in this dynamically relaxed cluster with mass function slope is in agreement with the Salpeter value. NIR and Halpha excess support the existence of a young (< 2 Myr) stellar population of Herbig Ae/Be stars (> 3.0 M_sun) in…
We completed a search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure (PdB) interferometers. We present our new VLA and PdBI data for the three objects MWC 297, Z CMa, and LKHa 215. We constructed the SED from near-IR to centimeter wavelengths by adding our millimeter and centimeter data to the available data at other wavelengths, mainly Spitzer images. The entire SED was fitted using a disk+envelope model. In addition, we compiled all the disk millimeter observations in the literature and completed a statistical analysis of all…
We present Halpha spectropolarimetry of a large sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars of low and intermediate mass, and argue that the technique is a powerful tool in studying the circumstellar geometry around these objects. For the intermediate mass (2 -- 15 Msun) Herbig Ae/Be stars we find that 16 out of 23 show a line effect, which immediately implies that flattening is common among these objects. Furthermore, we find a significant difference in Halpha spectropolarimetry behaviour between the Herbig Be and Ae groups. For the Herbig Be stars, the concept of an electron scattering disc is s…
We have carried out a high-sensitivity search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars in the continuum at 1.4mm and 2.7mm using the IRAM interferometer at the Plateau de Bure (PdBI) . In this letter, we report data on three well studied B0 stars, MWC 1080, MWC 137 and R Mon. The two latter have also been observed in the continuum at 0.7 cm and 1.3 cm using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) . We report the detection of circumstellar disks around MWC 1080 and R Mon with masses of Md ~ 0.003 and 0.01 Msun, respectively, while for MWC 137 we estimate a disk mass upper limit of 0.007 Msun. Our…
We have used laser guide star adaptive optics and a near-infrared dual-channel imaging polarimeter to observe light scattered in the circumstellar environment of Herbig Ae/Be stars on scales of 100-300 AU. We discover a strongly polarized, biconical nebula 10 arcseconds in diameter (6000 AU) around the star LkHa 198, and also observe a polarized jet-like feature associated with the deeply embedded source LkHa 198-IR. The star LkHa 233 presents a narrow, unpolarized dark lane consistent with an optically thick circumstellar disk blocking our direct view of the star. These data show that the low…
We present a statistical study of the X-Ray emission toward 22 Herbig AeBe stars using the Chandra archive. We probe the origin of the X-Rays toward Herbig stars: are they intrinsic? This question is addressed by correlations between the physical stellar properties and the X-Ray emission. There is a weak correlation between the continuum radio emission at lambda = 3.6cm and Lx, which suggests that the X-Ray emission depends upon the source. On the other hand, no correlation was found with the stellar rotational period, but that only excludes solar-like magnetic activity as the origin of the X-…
We use spectrally dispersed near-IR interferometry data to constrain the temperature profiles of sub-AU-sized regions of 11 Herbig Ae/Be sources. We find that a single-temperature ring does not reproduce the data well. Rather, models incorporating radial temperature gradients are preferred. These gradients may arise in a dusty disk, or may reflect separate gas and dust components with different temperatures and spatial distributions. Comparison of our models with broadband spectral energy distributions suggests the latter explanation. The data support the view that the near-IR emission of Herb…
We report new millimeter observations of the circumstellar material surrounding the Herbig Ae A0.5 star HD 34282 performed with the IRAM array in CO J=2-1 and in continuum at 1.3 mm. These observations have revealed the existence of a large Keplerian disk around the star. We have analysed simultaneously the line and continuum emissions to derive the physical properties of both the gas and the dust. The analysis of our observations also shows that the Hipparcos distance to the star is somewhat underestimated ; the actual distance is probably about 400 pc. With this distance the disk around HD 3…
We have used the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS and laser guide star adaptive optics at Keck Observatory to obtain high angular resolution (0.06"), moderate spectral resolution (R ~ 3800) images of the bipolar jet from the Herbig Ae star LkHa 233, seen in near-IR [Fe II] emission at 1.600 & 1.644 microns. This jet is narrow and tightly collimated, with an opening angle of only 9 degrees, and has an average radial velocity of ~ 100 km/s. The jet and counterjet are asymmetric, with the red-shifted jet much clumpier than its counterpart at the angular resolution of our observations. The obser…
We present Submillimeter Array observations of the Herbig Ae star HD169142 in 1.3 millimeter continuum emission and 12CO J=2-1 line emission at 1.5 arcsecond resolution that reveal a circumstellar disk. The continuum emission is centered on the star position and resolved, and provides a mass estimate of about 0.02 solar masses for the disk. The CO images show patterns in position and velocity that are well matched by a disk in Keplerian rotation with low inclination to the line-of-sight. We use radiative transfer calculations based on a flared, passive disk model to constrain the disk paramete…
Adaptive optics imaging of the bright visual T Tauri binary AS 353 with the Subaru Telescope shows that it is a hierarchical triple system. The secondary component, located 5.6" south of AS 353A, is resolved into a subarcsecond binary, AS 353Ba and Bb, separated by 0.24". Resolved spectroscopy of the two close components shows that both have nearly identical spectral types of about M1.5. Whereas AS 353A and Ba show clear evidence for an infrared excess, AS 353Bb does not. We discuss the possible role of multiplicity in launching the large Herbig-Haro flow associated with AS 353A.
We present a new model-independent method of comparison of NIR visibility data of YSOs. The method is based on scaling the measured baseline with the YSO's distance and luminosity, which removes the dependence of visibility on these two variables. We use this method to compare all available NIR visibility data and demonstrate that it distinguishes YSOs of luminosity >1000L_sun (low-L) from YSOs of <1000L_sun (high-L). This confirms earlier suggestions, based on fits of image models to the visibility data, for the difference between the NIR sizes of these two luminosity groups. When plotted aga…
This work presents the determination of the effective temperature, gravity, metallicity, mass, luminosity and age of 27 young early-type stars, most of them in the age range 1-10 Myr, and three -suspected- hot companions of post-T Tauri stars belonging to the Lindroos binary sample. Most of these objects show IR excesses in their spectral energy distributions, which are indicative of the presence of disks. The work is relevant in the fields of stellar physics, physics of disks and formation of planetary systems. Spectral energy distributions and mid-resolution spectra were used to estimate the…
The results of spectroscopic study of Ae Herbig star RR Tau are reported. The observations were carried out with a moderate resolution. In accordance with the presented data the Halpha line exhibits a double-peaked emission profile. The blue component is weaker than or equal to the red one. Variations of the Halpha equivalent width by a factor of 4 - 5 were found. The structure of this line also varies. On JD 2447148 a red absorption reversal of the Halpha profile was observed. The Hbeta spectral line exhibited both emission and absorption. On JD 2449664 the single-peak emission shifted to the…
We present a new mode of observations with VISIR, the mid-InfraRed (mid-IR) imager and spectrometer on the VLT (ESO, Chile): the so-called BURST mode. This mode allows to reach the diffraction limit of the telescope. To illustrate results obtained with this mode, we discuss observations of disks around Herbig Ae stars. These stars are the more massive analogues of T Tauri stars and are believed to harbour circumstellar disks. The 10-20 microns atmospheric windows are well-suited to study the extended emission of these objects. With a 8 m class telescope, in fair seeing conditions, the observat…
Chandra X-ray imaging spectroscopy of the nearby Herbig Ae star HD 163296 at 100 AU angular resolution is reported. A point-like, soft (kT~0.5 keV), emission-line source is detected at the location of the star with an X-ray luminosity of 4.0e29 erg/s. In addition, faint emission along the direction of a previously-detected Ly-alpha-emitting jet and Herbig-Haro outflow may be present. The relatively low luminosity, lack of a hard spectral component, and absence of strong X-ray variability in HD 163296 can be explained as originating from optically-thin shock-heated gas accreting onto the stella…
We present 7-mm continuum observations of 14 low-mass pre-main-sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region obtained with the Very Large Array with ~1.5" resolution and ~0.3 mJy rms sensitivity. For 10 objects, the circumstellar emission has been spatially resolved. The large outer disk radii derived suggest that the emission at this wavelength is mostly optically thin. The millimetre spectral energy distributions are characterised by spectral indices alpha = 2.3 to 3.2. After accounting for contribution from free-free emission and corrections for optical depth, we determine dust op…
We present linear Halpha spectropolarimetry of the classical T Tauri star RY Tau. A change in the polarization percentage and position angle across Halpha is detected, which suggests that line photons are scattered in a rotating disc. We derive the position angle from the slope of the loop in the (Q,U) diagram and find it to be 146 +/- 3 degrees. This is perpendicular to the position angle of the disc of 48 +/- 5 degrees as deduced from submillimeter imaging by Koerner & Sargent (1995). This finding is consistent, as scattering off the imaged millimeter disc is expected to yield a polarization…
Aims. The chemistry of, and infrared (IR) emission from, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in disks around Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars are investigated. The equilibrium distribution of the PAHs over all accessible charge/hydrogenation states depends on the size and shape of the PAHs and on the physical properties of the star and surrounding disk. Methods. A chemistry model is created to calculate this equilibrium distribution. Destruction of PAHs by ultraviolet (UV) photons, possibly in multi-photon absorption events, is taken into account. The chemistry model is coupled to a radiativ…
We performed a systematic search for Chandra archival observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars. These stars are fully radiative and not expected to support dynamo action analogous to their convective lower-mass counterparts, the T Tauri stars. Their X-ray emission has remained unexplained. The superior spatial resolution of Chandra with respect to previous X-ray instrumentation has allowed us to examine the possible role of late-type companions in generating the observed X-rays. In the total sample of 17 Herbig Ae/Be stars, 8 are resolved from X-ray emitting faint companions or other unrelated X-ray…
The large body of near infrared observations presented in Testi et al. (1997; 1998) are analysed with the aim of characterizing the young stellar clusters surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. The results confirm the tendency of early Be stars to be surrounded by dense clusters of lower mass "companions", while Ae stars are never found to be associated with conspicuous groups. The transition between the different environments appears to occur smoothly from Ae to Be stars without a sharp threshold. No correlation of the richness of the stellar groups detected is found with the galactic position or th…
We have discovered an optically thick, edge-on circumstellar disk around a Herbig Ae star in the binary system PDS 144, providing the first intermediate-mass analog of HK Tau and similar T Tauris. This system consists of a V ~ 13 mag. primary and a fainter companion, with spectra of both stars showing evidence for circumstellar disks and accretion; both stars were classified as Herbig Aes by the Pico dos Dias survey. In Lick adaptive optics polarimetry, we resolved extended polarized light scattered from dust around the northern star. Followup Keck adaptive optics and mid-infrared observations…
We present high resolution 0.45" x 0.32" observations from the BIMA array toward the Herbig Ae system MWC 480 in the lambda = 1.4 mm dust continuum. We resolve a circumstellar disk of radius ~170 AU and constrain the disk parameters by comparing the observations to flat disk models. These results show that the typical fit parameters of the disk, such as the mass, Md ~ 0.04-0.18 Mo, and the surface density power law index, p=0.5 or 1, are comparable to those of the lower mass T Tauri stars. The dust in the MWC 480 disk can be modeled as processed dust material (beta ~ 0.8), similar to the Herbi…
We present infrared echelle spectroscopy of three Herbig-Haro (HH) driving sources (SVS 13, B5-IRS 1 and HH 34 IRS) using Subaru-IRCS. The large diameter of the telescope and wide spectral coverage of the spectrograph allowed us to detect several H_2 and [Fe II] lines in the H- and K-bands. These include H_2 lines arising from v=1-3 and J=1-11, and [Fe II] lines with upper level energies of E/k=1.1-2.7x10^4 K. For all objects the outflow is found to have two velocity components: (1) a high-velocity (-70 to -130 km s^-1) component (HVC), seen in [Fe II] or H_2 emission and associated with a col…
We construct a protostellar disk model that takes into account the combined effect of viscous evolution, photoevaporation and the differential radial motion of dust grains and gas. For T Tauri disks, the lifetimes of dust disks that are mainly composed of millimeter sized grains are always shorter than the gas disks' lifetimes, and become similar only when the grains are fluffy (density < 0.1 g cm^{-3}). If grain growth during the classical T Tauri phase produces plenty of millimeter sized grains, such grains completely accrete onto the star in 10^7 yr, before photoevaporation begins to drain …
We present a compositional analysis of 8-13um spectra of 32 young stellar objects (YSOs). Our sample consists of 5 intermediate-mass stars and 27 low-mass stars. While the spectra and first scientific results have already been published by Przygodda et al. (2003) and Kessler-Silacci et al. (2004) we perform a more detailed analysis of the 10um silicate feature. In our analysis we assume that this emission feature can be represented by a linear superposition of the wavelength-dependent opacity $κ_{\rm abs}(λ)$ describing the optical properties of silicate grains with different chemical composit…
The R CrA star-forming region has a small dark cloud with quite a number of protostars, T Tauri stars, and some Herbig Ae/Be stars, plus a number of weak-line T Tauri stars around the cloud found by ROSAT follow-up observations. We searched for multiples among the young stars in and around the R CrA cloud in order to investigate multiplicity in this region. We performed interferometric and imaging observations with the speckle camera SHARP I at the ESO 3.5m NTT and adaptive optics observation with ADONIS at the ESO 3.6m telescope, all in the near-infrared bands JHK obtained in the years 1995, …
We determine inner disk sizes and temperatures for four solar-type (1-2 M$_{\odot}$) classical T Tauri stars (AS 207A, V2508 Oph, AS 205A, and PX Vul) using 2.2 $μ$m observations from the Keck Interferometer. Nearly contemporaneous near-IR adaptive optics imaging photometry, optical photometry, and high-dispersion optical spectroscopy are used to distinguish contributions from the inner disks and central stars in the interferometric observations. In addition, the spectroscopic and photometric data provide estimates of stellar properties, mass accretion rates, and disk co-rotation radii. We mod…
We present the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a prototypical Herbig star (AB Aurigae), measure and interpret various spectral features, and compare our results with model predictions. We use X-ray spectroscopy data from XMM-Newton. The spectra are interpreted using thermal, optically thin emission models with variable element abundances and a photoelectric absorption component. We interpret line flux ratios in He-like triplet of O VII as a function of electron density and the UV radiation field. We use the nearby co-eval classical T Tauri star SU Aur as a comparison. AB Aurigae reveal…
We present 2.0-2.4micron integral field spectroscopy at adaptive optics spatial resolution (~0.''1) obtained with the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) at Gemini North Observatory of six Classical T Tauri stars: T Tau, DG Tau, XZ Tau, HL Tau, RW Aur and HV Tau C. In all cases, the v=1-0 S(1) (2.12 micron) emission is detected at spatially extended distances from the central stars. The bulk of the H_2 emission is typically not spatially coincident with the location of continuum flux. Multiple transitions detected in the K-band spectra show that H_2 level populations are typical o…
We report the results of a sensitive K-band survey of Herbig Ae/Be disk sizes using the 85-m baseline Keck Interferometer. Targets were chosen to span the maximum range of stellar properties to probe the disk size dependence on luminosity and effective temperature. For most targets, the measured near-infrared sizes (ranging from 0.2 to 4 AU) support a simple disk model possessing a central optically-thin (dust-free) cavity, ringed by hot dust emitting at the expected sublimation temperatures (T_sub~1000-1500K). Furthermore, we find a tight correlation of disk size with source luminosity R prop…
First evidences of IR excess and disk mass accretion (strong H$α$ emission) around brown dwarfs seem to indicate the existence of circumstellar disks around these sub-stellar objects. Nothing is known at the present time about outflows which potentially might be launched from brown dwarfs, although jets are typically associated with the accretion in standard T Tauri star disks. In this paper we calculate the H$α$ emission of internal working surfaces produced by a radiative jet in a neutral and in a photoionized environment as a function of the jet parameters (the ejection velocity $v_j$, shoc…
Using both the Short- and Long-wavelength Spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), we have obtained infrared spectra of the Herbig Ae systems AB Aur and HD 163296. In addition, we obtained ground-based N band images of HD 163296. Our results can be summarized as follows: (1) The main dust components in AB Aur are amorphous silicates, iron oxide and PAHs; (2) The circumstellar dust in HD 163296 consists of amorphous silicates, iron oxide, water ice and a small fraction of crystalline silicates; (3) The infrared fluxes of HD 163296 are dominated by solid state features; (4) T…
We critically examine the best lines of evidence for grain growth in protoplanetary disks, based on modelling of observed spectral energy distributions and images of T Tauri and Herbig Ae stars. The data are consistent with millimeter-sized grains near disk midplanes, and micron-sized grains near disk surfaces. We review three channels by which grains can grow, including direct condensation from the vapor phase, grain-grain collisional sticking, and gravitational instability. The utility of dust in identifying as yet unseen extrasolar planets is highlighted.
We present the properties of a group of young stars associated with the well-studied T Tauri star system AS 353, located in the Aquila star-forming region. The association is identified using radial velocity measurements of sample objects selected from the Herbig and Bell Catalog based on their spatial proximity to AS 353. Radial velocities of nine objects were measured from multi-epoch high-resolution (R~30,000) H-band spectra obtained with NIRSPEC on Keck II. High-resolution K-band spectra were also obtained for most of the sample objects. Spectral types and rotational velocities are determi…
The 8-14 micron emission spectra of 12 T Tauri stars in the Taurus/Auriga dark clouds and in the TW Hydrae association obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS; The IRS is a collaborative venture between Cornell University and Ball Aerospace Corporation funded by NASA through the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Ames Research Center.) on board Spitzer are analyzed. Assuming the 10 micron features originate from silicate grains in the optically thin surface layers of T Tauri disks, the 8-14 micron dust emissivity for each object is derived from its Spitzer spectrum. The emissivities are fi…
The structure and chemistry of protoplanetary disks depends strongly on the nature of the central star around which it has formed. The dust temperature is mainly set by the stellar luminosity, while the chemistry of the upper disk layers depends on the amount of intercepted UV and X-ray flux. We will study the differences in chemistry, thermal sturcture and line emission around Herbig Ae/Be, T Tauri stars and low mass M dwarfs. Predictions will be made for future observations with SOFIA and Herschel.
We present self-consistent disk models for T Tauri stars which include a parameterized treatment of dust settling and grain growth, building on techniques developed in a series of papers by D'Alessio etal. The models incorporate depleted distributions of dust in upper disk layers along with larger-sized particles near the disk midplane, as expected theoretically and as we suggested earlier is necessary to account for mm-wave emission, SEDs, scattered light images, and silicate emission features simultaneously. By comparing the models with recent mid- and near-IR observations, we find that the …
We have investigated the spatial distribution, and the properties and chemical composition of the dust orbiting HD 100546. This system is remarkably different from other isolated Herbig Ae/Be stars in both the strength of the mid-IR excess and the composition of the circumstellar dust. We speculate that the formation and spatial distribution of the crystalline dust observed in the HD 100546 system may be linked to the formation of a proto-Jupiter in the disk around HD 100546. Such a proto-Jupiter could gravitationally stir the disk leading to a collisional cascade of asteroidal sized objects p…
Infrared ~5--35 um spectra for 40 solar-mass T Tauri stars and 7 intermediate-mass Herbig Ae stars with circumstellar disks were obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the c2d IRS survey. This work complements prior spectroscopic studies of silicate infrared emission from disks, which were focused on intermediate-mass stars, with observations of solar-mass stars limited primarily to the 10 um region. The observed 10 and 20 um silicate feature strengths/shapes are consistent with source-to-source variations in grain size. A large fraction of the features are weak and flat, consis…
Differences have been reported between the X-ray emission of accreting and non-accreting stars. Some observations have suggested that accretion shocks could be responsible for part of the X-ray emission in Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of nine pre-main sequence stars in order to test the proposed spectroscopic differences between accreting and non-accreting pre-main sequence stars. We use X-ray spectroscopy from the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometers and the EPIC instruments. We interpret the spectra using optically thin thermal models w…
The protoplanetary discs of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars have been studied by using geometric disc models to fit their spectral energy distribution (SED). The simulations provide means to reproduce the signatures of different circumstellar structures, which are related to different levels of infrared excess. Aiming to improve our previous model that assumed a simple flat disc configuration, in the present work we adopt a reprocessing flared disc model that considers hydrostatic, radiative equilibrium (Dullemond et al. 2001). We developed a method to optimise the parameters estimation based o…
A model for irradiated dust disks around Herbig Ae stars is proposed. The model is based on the flaring disk model of Chiang & Goldreich (1997), but with the central regions of the disk removed. The inner rim of the disk is puffed up and is much hotter than the rest of the disk, because it is directly exposed to the stellar flux. If located at the dust evaporation radius, its reemitted flux produces a conspicuous bump in the SED which peaks at 2-3 micron. We propose that this emission is the explanation for the near-infrared bump observed in the SEDs of Herbig Ae stars. We study for which stel…
