We present Chandra-HETGS observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 104237 and the associated young stars comprising lower mass stars, in the 0.15-1.75\msol mass range, in their pre-main sequence phase. The brightest X-ray source in the association is the central system harboring the Herbig Ae primary, and a K3 companion. Its X-ray variability indicates modulation possibly on time scales of the rotation period of the Herbig Ae star, and this would imply that the primary significantly contributes to the overall emission. The spectrum of the Herbig Ae+K3 system shows a soft component significantly more pronounced than in other K-type young stars. This soft emission is reminiscent of the unusually soft spectra observed for the single Herbig Ae stars HD 163296 and AB Aur, and therefore we tentatively attribute it to the Herbig Ae of the binary system. The HETGS spectrum shows strong emission lines corresponding to a wide range of plasma temperatures. The He-like triplet of MgXI and NeIX suggest the presence of plasma at densities of about $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, possibly indicating accretion related X-ray production mechanism.
The analysis of the zero-order spectra of the other sources indicates X-ray emission characteristics typical of pre-main sequence stars of similar spectral type, with the exception of the T Tauri HD104237-D, whose extremely soft emission is very similar to the emission of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya, and suggests X-ray production by shocked accreting plasma.
We present new L' (3.8-micron) observations of stars in the nearby (~97 pc) young (~6 Myr) compact cluster around eta Chamaeleontis, obtained with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Paranal, Chile. Our data, combined with J,H, Ks photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey, reveal that only two of the 12 members surveyed harbor L'-band excesses consistent with optically thick inner disks; both are also likely accretors. Intriguingly, two other stars with possible evidence for on-going accretion, albeit at very low rates, do not show significant infrared excess: this ma…
We report new results in our continuing study of the unique compact (1 pc extent), nearby (d = 97 pc), young (t = 9 Myr) stellar cluster dominated by the B9 star eta Chamaeleontis. An optical photometric survey spanning 1.3 x 1.3 pc adds two M5-M5.5 weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) stars to the cluster inventory which is likely to be significantly complete for primaries with masses > 0.15 M_sun. The cluster now consists of 17 primaries and approximately 9 secondaries lying within 100 AU of their primaries. The apparent distribution of 9:7:1 single:binary:triple systems shows 2-4 x higher multiplicity …
We have carried out a sensitive high-resolution imaging survey of stars in the young (6-8 Myr), nearby (97 pc) compact cluster around eta Chamaeleontis to search for stellar and sub-stellar companions. Given its youth and proximity, any sub-stellar companions are expected to be luminous, especially in the near infrared, and thus easier to detect next to their parent stars. Here, we present VLT/NACO adaptive optics imaging with companion detection limits for 17 eta Cha cluster members, and follow-up VLT/ISAAC near-infrared spectroscopy for companion candidates. The widest binary detected is ~0.…
We present the outcomes of a Chandra X-ray Observatory snapshot study of five nearby Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars which are kinematically linked with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA). Optical photometric and spectroscopic followup was conducted for the HD 104237 field. The principal result is the discovery of a compact group of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars associated with HD 104237 and its codistant, comoving B9 neighbor epsilon Chamaeleontis AB. We name the group after the most massive member. The group has five confirmed stellar systems ranging from spectral type B9-M5, including a remarkab…
We present a study of flux-calibrated low-resolution optical spectroscopy of ten stars belonging to eight systems in the ~ 5 Myr-old Epsilon Chamaeleontis (Eps Cha) pre-main-sequence (PMS) star cluster. Using synthetic broadband colours, narrow-band continuum, atomic and molecular lines derived from the spectra, we compare the Eps Cha stars to a slightly older PMS cluster, the ~ 8 Myr-old Eta Cha cluster, and to main-sequence dwarfs. Using synthetic VRI colours and other indices, we find that the relationship between broadband colours and spectroscopic temperature indicators for Eps Cha cluste…
A young, nearby compact aggregate of X-ray emitting pre-main sequence stars was recently discovered in the vicinity of eta Cha (B8V). In this paper, we further investigate this cluster: its membership, its environs and origins. ROSAT HRI X-ray data for the cluster's T Tauri stars show high levels of magnetic activity and variability. The cluster has an anomalous X-ray luminosity function compared to other young clusters, deficient in stars with low, but detectable X-ray luminosities. This suggests that many low-mass members have escaped the surveyed core region. Photographic photometry from th…
We have analyzed JHKL observations of the stellar population of the ~9 Myr-old eta Chamaeleontis cluster. Using infrared (IR) colour-colour and colour-excess diagrams, we find the fraction of stellar systems with near-IR excess emission is 0.60 pm 0.13 (2_sigma). This results implies considerably longer disc lifetimes than found in some recent studies of other young stellar clusters. For the classical T Tauri (CTT) and weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) star population, we also find a strong correlation between the IR excess and H_alpha emission. The IR excesses of these stars indicate a wide range of s…
Physical models of circumstellar disks surrounding pre-main sequence stars are currently constrained primarily by the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the system. Here we present first results from a survey of nearby Herbig Ae stars using nulling interferometry. We measure the spatial extent of the mid-IR emission for the stars HD 150193, HD 163296, and HD 179218. The results indicate the size of mid-infrared emission around Herbig Ae stars may be much smaller than current models predict. The observations constrain ~90% of the 10 micron flux to be within an approximately 20 AU diameter re…
We report here the first evidence for planetesimal infall onto the very young Herbig Be star LkH$_α$234. These results are based on observations acquired over 31 days using spectroscopy of the sodium D lines, the He I 5876Å, and hydrogen H$_α$ lines. We find Redshifted Absorption Components (RAC) with velocities up to 200 km/s and very mild Blueshifted Absorption Components (BEC) up to 100 km/s in the Na I lines. No correlation is observed between the appearance of the Na I RAC & BEC and the H$_α$ and He I line variability, which suggests that these (Na I RAC & BEC) are formed in a process unr…
We present NIR and MIR observations of eight embedded young stellar groups around Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAEBEs) using archived Spitzer IRAC data and 2MASS data. These young stellar groups are nearby ($\leq$ 1 kpc) and still embedded within their molecular clouds. In order to identify the young stellar objects in our sample, we use the color-color diagram of J - [3.6] vs. Ks - [4.5]. The Spitzer images of our sample show that the groups around HAEBEs, spectral types earlier than B8, are usually associated with bright infrared nebulosity. Within this, there are normally 10 - 50 young stars distrib…
We present UBV CCD photometry and low-resolution spectra of stars in the field of the young open cluster NGC 146. UBV photometry of 434 stars were used to estimate the E(B$-$V) reddening of 0.55 $\pm$ 0.04 mag and BV photometry of 976 stars were used to estimate a distance modulus of (m$-$M)$_0$ = 12.7 $\pm$0.2 mag, corresponding to a distance of 3470$^{+335}_{-305}$ pc. We estimated 10 -- 16 Myr as the turn-off age for the upper main sequence of the cluster using isochrones and synthetic colour magnitude diagrams. We identified two B type stars with H$_α$ in emission and located on the MS usi…
Herbig-Haro objects (HHOs) are caused by outflows from young objects. Since the outflow relies on mass accretion from a circumstellar disk, it indicates ongoing growth. Recent results of infrared observations yielded evidence for disks around brown dwarfs. This suggests that at least a certain fraction of brown dwarfs forms like stars. Thus, young sub-stellar objects might cause HHOs as well. We present selected results of a general survey for HHOs based on DSS-II plates and CCD images taken with the Tautenburg Schmidt telescope. Numerous young objects could be identified due to their associat…
In this contribution we outline plans for identifying and characterising numerous young, low-mass stars within 150 pc of the Sun using the new SkyMapper telescope and Southern Sky Survey. We aim to learn more about the star formation history of the solar neighbourhood over the past 5-50 Myr, the dispersal processes involved, as well as testing pre-main sequence evolutionary models and the universality of the stellar Inital Mass Function. Searching for the dispersed halo of low-mass objects predicted to surround the Eta Chamaeleontis cluster will be one of the first goals of the project.
Using Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the superbubble N51D, we have identified three young stellar objects (YSOs) in dust globules, and made the first detection of a Herbig-Haro object outside the Galaxy. The spectral energy distributions of these YSOs suggest young massive stars with disk, envelope, and outflow cavities. The interstellar conditions are used to assess whether the star formation was spontaneous or induced by external pressure.
Using UBVRI Halpha CCD photometric observations and the archival NIR and X-ray data, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a young star cluster NGC 7419. An age of 22.5+/-3.0 Myr and a distance of 3230^{+330}_{-430} pc are derived for the cluster with a higher value of color excess ratio E(U-B)/E(B-V) than the normal one. There is an evidence for mass segregation in this dynamically relaxed cluster with mass function slope is in agreement with the Salpeter value. NIR and Halpha excess support the existence of a young (< 2 Myr) stellar population of Herbig Ae/Be stars (> 3.0 M_sun) in…
We present a new model-independent method of comparison of NIR visibility data of YSOs. The method is based on scaling the measured baseline with the YSO's distance and luminosity, which removes the dependence of visibility on these two variables. We use this method to compare all available NIR visibility data and demonstrate that it distinguishes YSOs of luminosity >1000L_sun (low-L) from YSOs of <1000L_sun (high-L). This confirms earlier suggestions, based on fits of image models to the visibility data, for the difference between the NIR sizes of these two luminosity groups. When plotted aga…
We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess…
The large body of near infrared observations presented in Testi et al. (1997; 1998) are analysed with the aim of characterizing the young stellar clusters surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. The results confirm the tendency of early Be stars to be surrounded by dense clusters of lower mass "companions", while Ae stars are never found to be associated with conspicuous groups. The transition between the different environments appears to occur smoothly from Ae to Be stars without a sharp threshold. No correlation of the richness of the stellar groups detected is found with the galactic position or th…
We present the ASCA results of intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars (PMSs), or Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes). Among the 35 ASCA pointed-sources, we detect 11 plausible X-ray counterparts. X-ray luminosities of the detected sources in the 0.5-10 keV band are in the range of log LX ~30-32 ergs s-1, which is systematically higher than those of low-mass PMSs. This fact suggests that the contribution of a possible low-mass companion is not large. Most of the bright sources show significant time variation, particularly, two HAeBes - MWC 297 and TY CrA - exhibit flare-like events with long decay t…
Context: Recent spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars have yielded new arguments in favour of a fossil origin for the magnetic fields of intermediate mass stars. Aims: To study the evolution of these magnetic fields, and their impact on the evolution of the angular momentum of these stars during the pre-main sequence phase, we observed Herbig Ae/Be members of young open clusters of various ages. Methods: We obtained high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars belonging to the young open clusters NGC 6611 (< 6 Myr), NGC 2244 (~1.9 Myr), and NGC 2264 (…
We present high resolution AO-corrected coronographic near-infrared imaging on the early-type Herbig Be star MWC 297. X-ray flaring has been reported towards this young object, however this has been difficult to reconcile with its early spectral type (B1.5) and relatively high mass (10 Msun). Our infrared and X-ray analysis shows that the X-ray flaring is likely due to a late-type star in the same field. The case of MWC 297 emphasizes the need for coronographic imaging to address the reality of X-ray emission towards Herbig Ae/Be stars, which is needed to understand the differences between low…
We present the analysis of FUSE observations of two Herbig AeBe stars known to harbor young circumstellar disks: HD 100546 and HD 163296. In both cases we detect absorption lines from warm and dense H2. The thermalization of the rotational levels up to J~4 allows evaluation of the temperature, density and typical size of the absorbing layer. These quantities are consistent with absorption of the light of the central star by a thin layer of a circumstellar disk seen at an intermediate inclination.
The near-star environment around young stars is very dynamic with winds, disks, and outflows. These processes are involved in star and planet formation, and influence the formation and habitability of planets around host stars. Even for the closest young stars, this will not be imaged even after the completion of the next generation of telescopes decades from now and other proxies must be used. The polarization of light across individual spectral lines is such a proxy that contains information about the geometry and density of circumstellar material on these small spatial scales. We have recen…
The detection and characterization of accretion processes in the disks surrounding young stars may be directly relevant to studies of planet formation. Especially the study of systems with very low accretion rates (<< 10^{-10} M_sun yr^{-1}) is important, since at those rates radial mixing becomes inefficient and disk material will have to be dissipated into larger bodies at its present location. In these proceedings, we compare the different methods of tracing accretion onto Herbig Ae/Be stars and conclude that high-resolution infrared spectroscopy is currently the only reliable method that o…
We report on initial results of our Spitzer Cycle 2 program to observe the young massive star R Mon and its associated HH 39 Herbig-Haro object in the mid-infrared. Our program used all instruments on-board Spitzer to obtain deep images with IRAC of the HH 39 complex and of R Mon and its surroundings, a deep image of HH 39 at 24 and 70 $μ$m with MIPS, and mid-infrared spectra with the SH, LH, and LL modules of IRS. The aim of this program is to study the physical links in a young massive star between accretion disk, outflows and jets, and sh ocks in the associated HH object. Our preliminary an…
Aims: We search for direct evidence of ongoing star formation by accretion in the Lagoon Nebula (M8), using optical wide-field narrow-band imaging obtained at La Silla Observatory. Methods: We examine [SII] and Halpha images for line-emission features that could be interpreted as signatures of outflow activity of the exciting sources. Results: We discover five new Herbig-Haro objects, study in detail their morphology and attempt to identify their potential driving sources among the population of T Tauri stars and embedded sources in the surroundings. Conclusions: The results reported here conc…
We report the results of VLT and Keck adaptive optics surveys of known members of the Eta Chamaeleontis, MBM 12, and TW Hydrae (TWA) associations to search for close companions. The multiplicity statistics of Eta Cha, MBM 12, and TWA are quite high compared with other clusters and associations, although our errors are large due to small number statistics. We have resolved S18 in MBM 12 and RECX 9 in Eta Cha into triples for the first time. The tight binary TWA 5Aab in the TWA offers the prospect of measuring the dynamical masses of both components as well as an independent distance to the syst…
Context: The evolution of a young protocluster depends on the relative spatial distributions and dynamics of both stars and gas. Aims: We study the distribution and properties of the gas and stars surrounding the luminous (10^4 L_sun) protocluster IRAS 18511+0146. Methods: IRAS 18511+0146 and the cluster associated with it has been investigated using the sub-millimetre (JCMT-SCUBA), infrared (Spitzer-MIPSGAL, Spitzer-GLIMPSE, Palomar) and radio (VLA) continuum data. Cluster simulations have been carried out in order to understand the properties of clusters as well as to compare with the observ…
We present the V band polarization of 81 Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) candidates from the Pico dos Dias Survey (PDS). A good estimate of the foreground polarization was possible for most stars. A large number of objects shows intrinsic polarization, which indicates that their circumstellar envelopes have some kind of non-spherical symmetry. In this work, however, we study these data focusing on their relation with the interstellar medium. Our data seem to indicate a correlation between the position angle of the HAeBe star polarization and that of the corresponding field stars. This may be an evidence …
We report the discovery of a dozen Herbig-Haro jets illuminated by the Lyman continuum and/or softer far-ultraviolet radiation fields of nearby high mass stars. Five irradiated outflows lie in the outer parts of the Orion Nebula and seven lie near the reflection nebula NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We propose that the UV radiation field has eroded residual material left over from the formation of these young source stars. Many of the irradiated jets exhibit unusual C-shaped bending. In the outskirts of the Orion Nebula, most irradiated jets bend away from the core of the nebula. On …
Intermediate dispersion spectroscopic observations of 37 Herbig Ae/Be stars reveal that the equivalent widths of their [OI] 6300A and Halpha emission lines, are related to their near-infrared colours in the same fashion as the T-Tauri stars. Such a correlation strongly supports the idea that the winds from Herbig Ae/Be stars arise in the same manner as those from T-Tauri stars, i.e. through accretion driven mass-loss. We also find that the [OI] 6300A line luminosity correlates better with excess infrared luminosity than with stellar luminosities, again supporting the idea that Herbig Ae/Be win…
We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being resp…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the young open cluster NGC 7419, which is know to host a large number of classical Be stars for reasons not well understood. Based on CCD photometric observations of 327 stars in UBV passbands, we estimated the cluster parameters as, reddening E(B-V) = 1.65 +/- 0.15 mag and distance = 2900 +/- 400 pc. The turn off age of the cluster was estimated as 25 +/- 5 Myr using isochrone fits. UBV data of the stars were combined with JHK data from 2MASS and were used to create the near infrared (NIR) (J-H) vs (H-K) colour-colour diagram. A large fracti…
We have mapped the eta Chamaeleontis young stellar association in the far-infrared with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All sixteen members within the map region were detected at 24 um, along with five members at 70 um and two at 160 um. Ten stars show far-infrared excess emission indicating the presence of circumstellar disks; six of these have central clearings as evidenced by the onset of excess emission at >5 um. No new infrared excess sources are identified among the 113 2MASS field stars with 24 um photometry but not seen as X-ray sourc…
We have found Herbig Ae/Be star candidates in the western region of the Magellanic Bridge. Using the near infrared camera SIRIUS and the 1.4 m telescope IRSF, we surveyed about 3.0 deg x 1.3 deg (24 deg < RA < 36 deg, -75 deg < Dec. < -73.7 deg) in the J, H, and Ks bands. On the basis of colors and magnitudes, about 200 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates are selected. Considering the contaminations by miscellaneous sources such as foreground stars and early-type dwarfs in the Magellanic Bridge, we estimate that about 80 (about 40%) of the candidates are likely to be Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also found…
Using the 3-telescope IOTA interferometer on Mt. Hopkins, we report results from the first near-infrared (lambda=1.65 mu) closure-phase survey of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). These closure phases allow us to unambiguously detect departures from centrosymmetry (i.e., skew) in the emission pattern from YSO disks on the scale of ~4 milliarcseconds, expected from generic ``flared disk'' models. Six of fourteen targets showed small, yet statistically-significant, non-zero closure phases, with largest values from the young binary system MWC 361-A and the (pre-main sequence?) Be star HD 45677. Our o…
We present ISO-SWS observations of H2 pure-rotational line emission from the disks around low and intermediate mass pre-main-sequence stars as well as from young stars thought to be surrounded by debris disks. We detect `warm' (T ~ 100-200 K) H2 gas around many sources, including tentatively the debris-disk objects. The mass of this warm gas ranges from ~1E-4 Solar mass up to 8E-3 Solar mass, and can constitute a non-negligible fraction of the total disk mass. Complementary single-dish 12CO 3-2, 13CO 3-2 and 12CO 6-5 observations have been obtained as well. These transitions probe cooler gas a…
Recently, strong, globally-ordered magnetic fields have been detected in some Herbig Ae and Be (HAeBe) stars, suggesting a possible evolutionary connection to main sequence magnetic chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars. We have undertaken a detailed study of the binary system HD 72106, which contains a B9 magnetic primary and a HAeBe secondary, using the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter mounted on the CFHT. A careful analysis of the very young primary reveals that it has an approximately dipolar magnetic field geometry, strong chemical peculiarities, and strong surface chemical abundance inhomogenei…
We performed a systematic search for Chandra archival observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars. These stars are fully radiative and not expected to support dynamo action analogous to their convective lower-mass counterparts, the T Tauri stars. Their X-ray emission has remained unexplained. The superior spatial resolution of Chandra with respect to previous X-ray instrumentation has allowed us to examine the possible role of late-type companions in generating the observed X-rays. In the total sample of 17 Herbig Ae/Be stars, 8 are resolved from X-ray emitting faint companions or other unrelated X-ray…
Herbig Ae stars are young A-type stars in the pre-main sequence evolutionary phase with masses of ~1.5-3 M_o. They show rather intense surface activity (Dunkin et al. 1997) and infrared excess related to the presence of circumstellar disks. Because of their youth, primordial magnetic fields inherited from the parent molecular cloud may be expected, but no direct evidence for the presence of magnetic fields on their surface, except in one case (Donati et al. 1997), has been found until now. Here we report observations of optical circular polarization with FORS 1 at the VLT in the three Herbig A…
The interpretation of X-ray detections from Herbig Ae/Be stars is disputed as it is not clear if these intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars are able to drive a dynamo and ensuing phenomena of magnetic activity. Alternative X-ray production mechanisms, related to stellar winds, star-disk magnetospheres, or unresolved late-type T Tauri star companions have been proposed. In a series of papers we have been investigating high-resolution X-ray Chandra images of Herbig Ae/Be and main-sequence B-type stars to test the T Tauri hypothesis by spatially resolving known visual companions from the pri…
This paper is intended as part of a more extensive molecular line survey in star forming regions along the evolutionary track of a collapsing cloud toward a young stellar object. We have studied a sample of seven small dark clouds (Bok globules) and eight Herbig Ae/Be stars in the J=1->0 transition of HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$, HCN and H$^{13}$CN. The choice of these molecules is determined by the simple chemistry and the predicted high abundance of the reactants leading to their formation. The isotopically substituted species (isotopomers), H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and H$^{13}$CN, were observed in …
Hard X-ray emissions from a Herbig Be star MWC297 were discovered in three separate observations spanning 5 days in April 1994 with the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA). An X-ray flare was found at the beginning of the second observation with a maximum luminosity of 4.9E32 ergs/s, which is five times larger than that of the quiescent phase (the first observation). It then declined with an e-folding time of ~5.6E4 sec to the pre-flare level in the third observation. The X-ray spectra are explained by absorbed thin-thermal plasma models. The temperature in the quiescent p…
We present high resolution spectroscopic mid-infrared observations of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star HD97048 with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR). We detect the S(1) pure rotational line of molecular hydrogen (H2) at 17.035 microns arising from the disk around the star. This detection reinforces the claim that HD97048 is a young object surrounded by a flared disk at an early stage of evolution. The emitting warm gas is located within the inner 35 AU of the disk. The line-to-continuum flux ratio is much higher than expected from models of disks at …
We have carried out a study of the early type stars in nearby OB associations spanning an age range of $\sim$ 3 to 16 Myr, with the aim of determining the fraction of stars which belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class. We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby ($\le 500$ pc) OB associations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1, with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in these associations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visual extinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, using Hipparcos ph…
We present spatially resolved near-IR spectroscopic observations of 15 young stars. Using a grism spectrometer behind the Keck Interferometer, we obtained an angular resolution of a few milli-arcseconds and a spectral resolution of 230, enabling probes of both gas and dust in the inner disks surrounding the target stars. We find that the angular size of the near-IR emission typically increases with wavelength, indicating hot, presumably gaseous material within the dust sublimation radius. Our data also clearly indicate Brackett-gamma emission arising from hot hydrogen gas, and suggest the pres…
Herbig Ae/Be stars are a class of young pre-main sequence stellar objects of intermediate mass and are known to have varying amounts of natal cloud material still present in their direct vicinity. We characterise the IR emission bands, due to fluorescence by PAH molecules, in the spectra of Herbig Ae/Be stars and link observed variations to spatial aspects of the mid-IR emission. We analysed two PAH dominated spectra from a sample of 15 Herbig Ae/Be stars observed with Spitzer and derive profiles of the major PAH bands. The shape and the measured band characteristics show pronounced variations…
The spectral and extinction properties of 14 pre-main sequence candidates in the central part of the very young open cluster NGC 6383 were investigated. None of these stars shows evidence for anomalous circumstellar extinction. However, six out of 14 programme stars do show an infrared excess, indicative of the presence of circumstellar dust, heated up by the central star. One of these stars (number 4), also shows Halpha in emission and shows some indications for the presence of circumstellar gas in its spectrum, and might therefore be a newly identified Herbig Ae star.
We completed a search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure (PdB) interferometers. We present our new VLA and PdBI data for the three objects MWC 297, Z CMa, and LKHa 215. We constructed the SED from near-IR to centimeter wavelengths by adding our millimeter and centimeter data to the available data at other wavelengths, mainly Spitzer images. The entire SED was fitted using a disk+envelope model. In addition, we compiled all the disk millimeter observations in the literature and completed a statistical analysis of all…
We observed molecular hydrogen around a sample of pre-main sequence stars in order to better characterize their gaseous CS environments. We analyzed the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) spectra of a sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) covering a broad spectral range, including the main-sequence A5 star Beta-Pictoris. To better diagnose the origin of the detected H2 and its excitation conditions, we used a model of a photodissociation region. Our analysis demonstrates that the excitation of H2 is clearly different around most of the HAeBes compared to the interstellar medium. Mor…
Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar material. The observations were made at a wavelength of 20.5 $μ$m with the CAMIRAS camera mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We report the ob…
Context: Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the most abundant molecule in the circumstellar (CS) environments of young stars, and is a key element in giant planet formation. The measurement of the H2 content provides the most direct probe of the total amount of CS gas, especially in the inner warm planet-forming regions of the disks. Aims: Most Herbig Be stars (HBes) are distant from the Sun and their nature and evolution are still debated. We therefore conducted mid-infrared observations of H2 as a tracer of warm gas around HBes known to have gas-rich CS environments. Methods: We report a search for …
We improve upon the radiative, hydrostatic equilibrium models of passive circumstellar disks constructed by Chiang & Goldreich (1997). New features include (1) account for a range of particle sizes, (2) employment of laboratory-based optical constants of representative grain materials, and (3) numerical solution of the equations of radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium within the original 2-layer (disk surface + disk interior) approximation. We explore how the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a face-on disk depends on grain size distributions, disk geometries and surface densities, and st…
Eta Chamaeleontis is a unique young (~9 Myr) association with 18 systems concentrated in a radius of ~35 arcmin, i.e. 1pc at the cluster distance of 97pc. No other members have been found up to 1.5 degrees from the cluster centre. The cluster mass function is consistent with the IMF of other rich young open clusters in the higher mass range but shows a clear deficit of low mass stars and brown dwarfs with no objects below 0.1Msun. The aim of this paper is to test whether this peculiar mass function could result from dynamical evolution despite the young age of the cluster. We performed N-body …
Using the longest optical-interferometeric baselines currently available, we have detected strong near-infrared (NIR) emission from inside the dust-destruction radius of Herbig Ae stars MWC275 and AB Aur. Our sub-milli-arcsecond resolution observations unambiguously place the emission between the dust-destruction radius and the magnetospheric co-rotation radius. We argue that this new component corresponds to hot gas inside the dust-sublimation radius, confirming recent claims based on spectrally-resolved interferometry and dust evaporation front modeling.
Among the A/B stars, about 5% host large-scale organised magnetic fields. These magnetic stars show also abundance anomalies in their spectra, and are therefore called the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. Most of these stars are also slow rotators compared to the normal A and B stars. Today, one of the greatest challenges concerning the Ap/Bp stars is to understand the origin of their slow rotation and their magnetic fields. The favoured hypothesis for the latter is that the fields are fosils, which implies that the magnetic fields subsist throughout the different evolutionary phases, and in particular d…
The R CrA star-forming region has a small dark cloud with quite a number of protostars, T Tauri stars, and some Herbig Ae/Be stars, plus a number of weak-line T Tauri stars around the cloud found by ROSAT follow-up observations. We searched for multiples among the young stars in and around the R CrA cloud in order to investigate multiplicity in this region. We performed interferometric and imaging observations with the speckle camera SHARP I at the ESO 3.5m NTT and adaptive optics observation with ADONIS at the ESO 3.6m telescope, all in the near-infrared bands JHK obtained in the years 1995, …
A radiation-driven disk wind model is proposed that offers great promise of explaining the extreme mass loss signatures of massive young stellar objects (the BN-type objects and more luminous Herbig Be stars). It is argued that the dense low-velocity winds associated with young late-O/early-B stars would be the consequence of continuing optically-thick accretion onto them. The launch of outflow from a Keplerian disk allows wind speeds of about 200 km/s that are substantially less than the escape speed from the stellar surface. The star itself is not required to be a rapid rotator. Disk irradia…
Using adaptive optics on the Keck II 10-meter telescope on Mauna Kea, we have surveyed 24 of the nearest young stars known in search of close companions. Our sample includes members of the MBM 12 and TW Hydrae young associations and the classical T Tauri binary UY Aurigae in the Taurus star-forming region. We present relative photometry and accurate astrometry for 10 close multiple systems. The multiplicity frequency in the TW Hydrae and MBM 12 groups are high in comparison to other young regions, though the significance of this result is low because of the small number statistics. We resolve …
We present diffraction-limited images in the 11.3 micron PAH band and in the continuum at 11.9 microns of the S287B star forming region obtained with the newly commissioned mid-infrared imager/spectrometer VISIR at the VLT. In both filters five point-like sources are detected, of which at least one has a spectral energy distribution reminiscent of a Lada Class I source. We also report on the discovery of a new Herbig Ae star in this region. It is particularly striking that the brightest mid-infrared source in this region has not been detected at shorter wavelengths; it is a good candidate to b…
