We present a new exact black hole solution in three dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a single scalar field. This is one of the extended solutions of the BTZ black hole and has in fact $\textrm{AdS}_3$ geometries both at the spatial infinity and at the event horizon. An explicit derivation of Virasoro algebras for $\textrm{CFT}_2$ at the two boundaries is shown to be possible à la Brown and Henneaux's calculation. If we regard the scalar field as a running coupling in the dual two dimensional field theory, and its flow in the bulk as the "holographic" renormalization group flow, our black hole should interpolate the two $\textrm{CFT}_2$ living at the infinity and at the horizon. Following the Hamilton-Jacobi analysis by de Boer, Verlinde and Verlinde, we calculate the central charges $c_{\textrm{UV}}$ and $c_{\textrm{IR}}$ for the $\textrm{CFT}_2$ on the infinity and the horizon, respectively. We also confirm that the inequality $c_{\textrm{IR}} < c_{\textrm{UV}}$ is satisfied, which is consistent with the Zamolodchikov's c-theorem.
We analyze the beta-function equations for string theory in the case when the target space has one spacelike (or timelike) direction and rest is some conformal field theory (CFT) with appropriate central charge and has one nearly marginal operator. We show there always exists a space (time) dependent solution which interpolates between the original background and the background where CFT is replaced by a new conformal field theory, obtained by perturbing CFT by the nearly marginal operator.
We consider holographic RG flows which interpolate between non-trivial ultra-violet (UV) and infra-red (IR) conformal fixed points. We study the ``superpotentials'' which characterize different flows and discuss their expansions near the fixed points. Then we focus on the holographic $c$-function as defined from the two-point function of the stress-energy tensor. We point out that the equation for the metric fluctuations in the background flow is equivalent to a scattering problem and we use this to obtain an expression for the $c$-function in terms of the associated Jost functions. We propose…
We present a short review of hep-th/0306170. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, we explore what information from behind the horizon of the bulk black hole geometry can be found in boundary CFT correlators. In particular, we argue that the CFT correlators contain distinct, albeit subtle, signals of the black hole singularity.
Following Kerr/CFT correspondence, we compute the entropy of five-dimensional supersymmetric rotating BMPV black holes. We successfully reproduce Iyer-Wald formula in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet terms from the viewpoint of microscopic CFT. This further supports the higher-derivative version of Kerr/CFT prescription proposed in arXiv:0903.4176 for four-dimensional extremal Kerr black holes.
We study the pathologies in AdS black branes in Lovelock theory. More precisely, we examine the conditions that AdS black branes have the naked singularity, the ghost instability and the dynamical instability. From the point of view of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the pathologies in AdS black branes indicate the pathologies in the corresponding CFT. Hence, we need to be careful when we apply AdS/CFT in Lovelock theory to various phenomena such as the shear viscosity to entropy ratio in strongly coupled quantum filed theory.
We develop basic tools and matching conditions to interpolate between asymptotic and near horizon symmetries. We focus on black holes in three dimensions. In particular, we match Brown--Henneaux boundary conditions at infinity, which yields two Virasoro algebras, to Heisenberg boundary conditions at the horizon yielding two u(1) current algebras. Our construction allows to equip BTZ black holes with soft hair excitations at the horizon invisible to the asymptotic observer.
We propose a new non-holographic formulation of AdS/CFT correspondence, according to which quantum gravity on AdS and its dual non-gravitational field theory both live in the same number D of dimensions. The field theory, however, appears (D-1)-dimensional because the interactions do not propagate in one of the dimensions. The D-dimensional action for the field theory can be identified with the sum over (D-1)-dimensional actions with all possible values $Λ$ of the UV cutoff, so that the extra hidden dimension can be identified with $Λ$. Since there are no interactions in the extra dimension, m…
The greybody factors in BTZ black holes are evaluated from 2D CFT in the spirit of AdS$_3$/CFT correspondence. The initial state of black holes in the usual calculation of greybody factors by effective CFT is described as Poincaré vacuum state in 2D CFT. The normalization factor which cannot be fixed in the effective CFT without appealing to string theory is shown to be determined by the normalized bulk-to-boundary Green function. The relation among the greybody factors in different dimensional black holes is exhibited. Two kinds of $(h,{\bar h})=(1,1)$ operators which couple with the boundary…
We point out that the entropy of (near) extremal black holes can be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of dual conformal quantum mechanics via AdS2/CFT1. As an explicit example, we study near extremal BTZ black holes and derive this claim from AdS3/CFT2. We also analytically compute the entanglement entropy in the two dimensional CFT of a free Dirac fermion compactified on a circle at finite temperature. From this result, we clarify the relation between the thermal entropy and entanglement entropy, which is essential for the entanglement interpretation of black hole entropy.
In this note we investigate the first law of thermodynamics of the two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) that is dual to black holes. We start from the Cardy formula and get the CFT thermodynamics with minimal reasonable assumptions. We use both the microcanonical ensemble and canonical ensemble versions of the Cardy formula. In the black hole/CFT correspondence the black hole is dual to a CFT with excitations, and the black hole mass $M$ and charge $N$ correspond to the energy and charge of the excited CFT. The CFT left- and right-moving central charges $c_{L,R}$ should be quantized, a…
It has been conjectured that a near-extreme Kerr black hole is described by a 2d CFT. Previous work has shown that CFT operators dual to axisymmetric gravitational perturbations have integer conformal weights. In this paper, we study the analogous problem in 5d. We consider the most general near-extreme vacuum black hole with two rotational symmetries. This includes Myers-Perry black holes, black rings and Kaluza-Klein black holes. We find that operators dual to gravitational (or electromagnetic or massless scalar field) perturbations preserving both rotational symmetries have integer conforma…
The near horizon geometry of the rotating C-metric, describing accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes, is analysed. It is shown that, at extremality, even though not it is isomorphic to the extremal Kerr-Newman, it remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$. Therefore the methods of the Kerr/CFT correspondence can successfully be applied to build a CFT dual model, whose entropy reproduce, through the Cardy formula, the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy of the accelerating black hole. The mass of accelerating Kerr-Newman black hole, which fulfil the first law of thermodynamics, is prese…
We construct the general 2+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS_3 solution dual to a stationary 1+1 CFT state on a black hole background. These states involve heat transport by the CFT between the 1+1 black hole and infinity (or between two 1+1 black holes), and so describe the AdS dual of CFT Hawking radiation. Although the CFT stress tensor is typically singular at the past horizon of the 1+1 black hole, the bulk 2+1-dimensional solutions are everywhere smooth, and in fact are diffeomorphic to AdS_3. In particular, we find that Unruh states of the CFT on any finite-temperature 1+1 black hole bac…
We present a new twisted rotating black hole solution by performing Demia{ń}ski-Newman-Janis algorithm to the electrically and dyonically charged black hole with quintessence in Rastall theory of gravity. Using our black hole solution, we argue that Rastall gravity is not equivalent with Einstein gravity. For further explanation, the black hole properties such as the horizon and ergosphere are studied for which there are some different properties for those theories. Some thermodynamic properties of the black hole solution are also discussed. At the end, considering the Kerr/CFT correspondence …
We study the emission rates of scalar, spinor and vector particles from a 5 dimensional black hole for arbitrary partial waves. The solution is lifted to 6 dimensions, and the near horizon $ BTZ \times S^3$ geometry of the black hole solution is probed to determine the greybody factors. We show that the exact decay rates can be reproduced from a $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory which lies on the boundary of the near horizon geometry. The AdS/CFT correspondence is used to determine the dimension of the CFT operators corresponding to the bulk fields. These operators couple to plane wav…
The Kerr/CFT correspondence is a holographic duality between a two dimensional chiral conformal field theory (CFT) and the very near horizon limit of an extremal black hole, which includes an AdS2 structure. To understand the dual chiral CFT2, we apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence to a certain class of black holes embedded in string theory, which include the D1-D5-P and the BMPV black holes, and obtain the correct entropies for the black holes microscopically. These have an AdS3 structure in the near horizon geometry and an AdS2 structure in the very near horizon geometry. We identified one of …
We discuss dilatonic gravity (bulk theory) from the point of view of (generalized) AdS/CFT correspondence. Self-consistent dilatonic background is considered. It may be understood as two boundaries space where AdS boundary appears as infinite boundary and new (singular) boundary occurs at short distances. The two-point correlation function and conformal dimension for minimal and dilaton coupled scalar are found. Even for minimal scalar, the conformal dimension is found to be different on above two boundaries. Hence, new CFT appears in AdS/CFT correspondence at short distances. AdS/CFT correspo…
We use AdS/CFT to construct the gravitational dual of a 5D CFT in the background of a non-extremal rotating black hole. Our boundary conditions are such that the vacuum state of the dual CFT corresponds to the Unruh state. We extract the expectation value of the stress tensor of the dual CFT using holographic renormalisation and show that it is stationary and regular on both the future and the past event horizons. The energy density of the CFT is found to be negative everywhere in our domain and we argue that this can be understood as a vacuum polarisation effect. We construct the solutions by…
We find the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT corresponding to a moving black hole in AdS. Boosting the black hole to the speed of light, keeping the total energy fixed, yields a gravitational shock wave in AdS. The analogous procedure on the field theory side leads to ``light cone'' states, i.e., states with energy-momentum tensor localized on the light cone. The correspondence between the gravitational shock wave and these light cone states provides a useful tool for testing causality. We show, in several examples, how the CFT reproduces the causal relations in AdS.
We demonstrate that Kerr/CFT duality can be extended to rotating charged black hole solution surrounded by quintessence in Rastall gravity. Since Rastall gravity can be considered as $F(R,T) = R + βT $ theory with the addition of a matter term, so the gravitational Lagrangian is resemblant to Einstein general relativity. In fact, the resulting central term is coincident to the central term in the general relativity since $ T $ is only a trace of the matter term. We then exhibit that the entropy from CFT of this black hole is equivalent with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy with no correction rel…
Near-extremal black holes are obtained by exciting the Ramond sector of the D1-D5 CFT, where the ground state is highly degenerate. We find that the dual geometries for these ground states have throats that end in a way that is characterized by the CFT state. Below the black hole threshold we find a detailed agreement between propagation in the throat and excitations of the CFT. We study the breakdown of the semiclassical approximation and relate the results to the proposal of gr-qc/0007011 for resolving the information paradox: semiclassical evolution breaks down if hypersurfaces stretch too …
We discuss the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes in the context of dS/CFT correspondence by using static and planar coordinates. The boundary stress tensor and the mass of the solutions are computed. Also, we investigate how the RG flow is changed for different foliations. The Kastor-Traschen multi-black hole solution is considered as well as AdS counterparts of these configurations. In particular, we find that in planar coordinates the black holes appear like punctures in the dual boundary theory.
We study the dual CFT description of the $d+1$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS$_{d+1}$) black hole in the large dimension (large $d$) limit, both for the extremal and nonextremal cases. The central charge of the dual CFT$_2$ (or chiral CFT$_1$) is calculated for the near horizon near extremal geometry which possess an AdS$_2$ structure. Besides, the $Q$-picture hidden conformal symmetry in the nonextremal background can be naturally obtained by a probe charged scalar field in the large $d$ limit, without the need to input the usual limits to probe the hidden conformal sym…
The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically described a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics laws of both outer and inner horizons. These laws, characterizing how the black hole responds under the perturbation, allows us to read …
We examine the logarithmic corrections to the black hole (BH) entropy product formula of outer horizon and inner horizon by taking into account the \emph{effects of statistical quantum fluctuations around the thermal equilibrium} and \emph{via conformal field theory} (CFT). We argue that logarithmic corrections to the BH entropy product formula when calculated using CFT and taking into the effects of quantum fluctuations around the thermal equilibrium, the formula should \emph{not be universal} and it should also \emph{not be quantized}. These results have been explicitly checked by giving sev…
Within class of generic black holes there are extremal black holes (with vanishing Hawking temperature T) and vanishing horizon area Ah, but with finite Ah/T ratio, the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes. We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional EVH black hole solution to a generic (gauged) Einstein-Maxwell dilaton theory and show that in the near horizon limit they develop a throat which is a pinching orbifold limit of AdS3. This is an extension of the well known result for extremal black holes the near horizon limit of which contains an AdS2 throat. We show that in the …
Pure theories of AdS$_3$ quantum gravity are conjectured to be dual to CFTs with sparse spectra of light primary operators. The sparsest possible spectrum consistent with modular invariance includes only black hole states above the vacuum. Witten conjectured the existence of a family of extremal CFTs, which realize this spectrum for all admissible values of the central charge. We consider the quantum corrections to the classical spectrum, and propose a specific modification of Witten's conjecture which takes into account the existence of "small" black hole states. These have zero classical hor…
We extend the study of time-dependent backgrounds in the AdS/CFT correspondence by examining the relation between bulk and boundary for the smooth 'bubble of nothing' solution and for the locally AdS black hole which has the same asymptotic geometry. These solutions are asymptotically locally AdS, with a conformal boundary conformal to de Sitter space cross a circle. We study the cosmological horizons and relate their thermodynamics in the bulk and boundary. We consider the alpha-vacuum ambiguity associated with the de Sitter space, and find that only the Euclidean vacuum is well-defined on th…
By using the ultra-spinning limit as a generating solution technique, we construct a novel class of charged rotating asymptotic AdS black holes. That describes the exact D-dimnsioanl solutions of Einstein-Maxwell dilaton theory in the presence of negative cosmological constant. The obtained geometries possess some punctures, describing a noncompact horizon, but has a finite area. We then explicitly investigate the validity of the Kerr/CFT correspondence for all dimensional cases. We find a main result for the central charges associated to $[(d-1)/2]$ copies of dual $2D$ CFTs. We then argue the…
We investigate the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole solution obtained from Plebański-Demiański solutions with several assumptions. The origin of the microscopic entropy of this black hole is investigated using the conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence which is originally proposed for extremal Kerr black holes. The isometry of the near-horizon extremal Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole shows that the asymptotic symmetry group may be implemented to compute the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. Furthermore, by assuming Frolov-Thorne vacuum, the conformal temperatures can be obtained. Then by using the Car…
We analyze the near-horizon limit of a general black hole with two commuting killing vector fields in the limit of zero temperature. We use black hole thermodynamics methods to relate asymptotic charges of the complete spacetime to those obtained in the near-horizon limit. We then show that some diffeomorphisms do alter asymptotic charges of the full spacetime, even though they are defined in the near horizon limit and, therefore, count black hole states. We show that these conditions are essentially the same as considered in the Kerr/CFT corresponcence. From the algebra constructed from these…
It has been argued i) that Lorentz-signature solutions with wormholes connecting n asymptotically AdS regions describe bulk quantum states dual to n entangled but non-interacting CFTs and ii) that such bulk wormhole states should be identified with similar entangled but non-interacting bulk systems, each describing quantum geometries with only a single asymptotic region. But if the wormhole is to behave semiclassically, we show that conjecture (ii) cannot hold. Instead, the theory of asymptotically AdS bulk quantum gravity must admit superselection sectors with respect to the CFT observables t…
In this essay, we examine the implications of the ongoing black holes vs. firewalls debate for the thermo-field dynamics of black holes by analyzing a CFT in a thermal state in the context of AdS/CFT. We argue that the themo-field doubled copy of the thermal CFT should be thought of not as a fictitious system, but as the image of the CFT in the heat-bath. While this idea was proposed earlier by Papadodimas et al., our following conclusions differ from theirs. In case of strong coupling between the CFT and the heat-bath this image allows for free infall through the horizon and the system is des…
The anti--de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence is a powerful tool that promises to provide new insights toward a full understanding of field theories under extreme conditions, including but not limited to quark-gluon plasma, Fermi liquid and superconductor. In many such applications, one typically models the field theory with asymptotically AdS black holes. These black holes are subjected to stringy effects that might render them unstable. Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, in which space and time undergo different transformations, has attracted attentions due to its power-counting …
Recent studies suggest that in the Kerr/CFT correspondence, much universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics of the outer and inner horizons of the Kerr(-Newman) black holes. In this paper, we study holographic descriptions of Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes in arbitrary dimensions by using the thermodynamics method. We refine the thermodynamics method proposed in arXiv:1206.2015 by imposing the "quantization" condition so that we can fix the ambiguity in determining the central charges of the dual CFT of …
We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory press…
The tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2\times S^2$. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based …
Unlike three-dimensional Einstein gravity, three-dimensional massive gravity admits asymptotically de Sitter space (dS) black hole solutions. These black holes present interesting features and provide us with toy models to study the dS/CFT correspondence. A remarkable property of these black holes is that they are always in thermal equilibrium with the cosmological horizon of the space that hosts them. This invites us to study the thermodynamics of these solutions within the context of dS/CFT. We study the asymptotic symmetry group of the theory and find that it indeed coincides with the local…
We describe the experience of an observer falling into a black hole using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In order to do this, we reconstruct the local bulk operators measured by the observer along his trajectory outside the black hole. We then extend our construction beyond the black hole horizon. We show that this is possible because of an effective doubling of the observables in the boundary theory, when it is in a pure state that is close to the thermal state. Our construction allows us to rephrase questions about information-loss and the structure of the metric at the horizon in terms of more…
In the context of the conjectured AdS-CFT correspondence of string theory, we consider a class of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black holes whose conformal boundary consists of a single connected component, identical to the conformal boundary of Anti-de Sitter space. In a simplified model of the boundary theory, we find that the boundary state to which the black hole corresponds is pure, but this state involves correlations that produce thermal expectation values at the usual Hawking temperature for suitably restricted classes of operators. The energy of the state is finite and agrees in the s…
We compute the asymptotic symmetry group of the four dimensional near-extremal Kerr-Sen black hole within an AdS2/CFT1 correspondence. We do this by performing a Robinson-Wilczek two dimensional reduction and construct a quantum theory of the remaining field content. The resulting energy momentum tensor generates an asymptotic Virasoro algebra, to s-wave, with a calculable central extension. This center in conjunction with the proper regularized lowest Virasoro eigen-mode yields the near-extremal Kerr-Sen entropy via the statistical Cardy formula. Finally we analyze quantum holomorphic fluxes …
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
The first law for entanglement entropy in CFT in an odd-dimensional asymptotically AdS black hole is studied by using the AdS/CFT duality. The entropy of CFT considered here is due to the entanglement between two subsystems separated by the horizon of the AdS black hole, which itself is realized as the conformal boundary of a black droplet in even-dimensional global AdS bulk spacetime. In $(2+1)$-dimensional CFT, the first law is shown to be always satisfied by analyzing a class of metric perturbations of the exact solution of a $4$-dimensional black droplet. In $(4+1)$-dimensions, the first l…
The hidden Kerr/CFT proposal implies that the massless scalar wave equation in the near-region and low-frequency limit respects a hidden SL(2,R)$\times$SL(2,R) invariance in the Kerr black hole spacetime. We may use this symmetry to determine quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) of the massless scalar wave propagating around the Kerr black hole algebraically. It is shown that QNFs obtained using the hidden conformal symmetry near the horizon correspond approximately to not only those of scalar perturbation around the near-horizon region of a nearly extremal Kerr (NEK) black hole, but also those of n…
The duality relating the four-dimensional Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole to a thermal two-dimensional CFT with central charges $c_L=c_R=12 J_0$ is analyzed in detail, generalizing an argument given recently for Kerr within the soft-hair approach. The hidden conformal symmetry is realized in the form of $Vir_L \times Vir_R$ diffeomorphisms which act non-trivially on the black hole horizon. Semiclassical formulae are derived for the temperature and central charges of the dual CFT. Assuming the applicability of the Cardy formula, these CFT quantities precisely reproduce the macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawki…
We investigate the tendency in variations of the dual CFT$_2$ when a rotating AdS$_3$ black hole changes by fluxes transferred by the scattering of a massive scalar field according to the AdS/CFT correspondence. The conserved quantities of the black hole are definitely constrained by the extremal condition. Moreover, the laws of thermodynamics provide a direction for the changes in the conserved quantities, so the black hole cannot be extremal under the scattering. This is naturally preferred. By the relationship between the rotating AdS$_3$ black hole and dual CFT$_2$, we find that such chang…
In the paper we further refine the thermodynamics method of black hole/CFT correspondence. We show that one can derive the central charges of different holographic pictures directly from the entropy product $S_+S_-$ if it is mass-independent, for a black hole in the Einstein gravity or the gravity without diffeomorphism anomaly. For a general black hole in the Einstein gravity that admits holographic descriptions, we show that the thermodynamics method and asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) analysis can always give consistent results in the extreme limit. Furthermore, we discuss the relation betw…

We study the hidden conformal symmetry of the extremal black holes. We introduce a new set of conformal coordinates to write the $SL(2,R)$ generators. We find that the Laplacian of the scalar field in many extremal black holes could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. This suggests that there exist dual CFT descriptions of these black holes. From the conformal coordinates, the temperatures of the dual CFTs could be read directly. For the extremal black hole, the Hawking temperature is vanishing. Correspondingly, only the left (right) temperature of the dual CFT is non-vanis…

We express the AdS-Schwarzschild black-hole configuration in coordinates such that the boundary metric is of the FLRW type. We review how this construction can be used in order to calculate the stress-energy tensor of the dual CFT on the FLRW background. We deduce the temperature and entropy of the CFT, which are related to the temperature and entropy of the black hole. We find that the entropy is proportional to the area of an apparent horizon, different from the black-hole event horizon. For a dS boundary we reproduce correctly the intrinsic temperature of dS space.
We investigate AdS/CFT correspondence for two families of Einstein black holes in d > 3 dimensions, modelling the boundary CFT by a free conformal scalar field and evaluating the boundary two-point function in the bulk geodesic approximation. For the d > 3 counterpart of the nonrotating BTZ hole and for its Z_2 quotient, the boundary state is thermal in the expected sense, and its stress-energy reflects the properties of the bulk geometry and suggests a novel definition for the mass of the hole. For the generalised Schwarzschild-AdS hole with a flat horizon of topology R^{d-2}, the boundary st…
We establish resolution bounds on reconstructing a bulk field from boundary data on a timelike hypersurface. If the bulk only supports propagating modes, reconstruction is complete. If the bulk also supports evanescent modes, local reconstruction is not achievable unless one has exponential precision in knowledge of the boundary data. Without exponential precision, for a Minkowski bulk, one can reconstruct a spatially coarse-grained bulk field, but only out to a depth set by the coarse-graining scale. For an asymptotically AdS bulk, reconstruction is limited to a spatial coarse-graining proper…
Recently Gibbons {\it et al.} in hep-th/0408217 defined a set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes with the maximal number of rotation parameters in arbitrary dimension. This set of conserved quantities is defined with respect to a frame which is non-rotating at infinity. On the other hand, there is another set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes, defined by Hawking {\it et al.} in hep-th/9811056, which is measured relative to a frame rotating at infinity. Gibbons {\it et al.} explicitly showed that the quantities defined by them satisfy the first law of black hole the…
We present a first-principles derivation of the main results of the Kerr/CFT correspondence and its extensions using only tools from gravity and quantum field theory. Firstly, we review properties of extremal black holes with in particular the construction of an asymptotic Virasoro symmetry in the near-horizon limit. The entropy of extremal spinning or charged black holes is shown to match with a chiral half of Cardy's formula. Secondly, we show how a thermal 2-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is relevant to reproduce the dynamics of near-superradiant probes around near-extremal black …
