Let k be an infinite perfect field of positive characteristic p and assume that strong resolution of singularities holds over k. We prove that, if X is a d-dimensional noetherian scheme whose underlying reduced scheme is essentially of finite type over the field k, then the negative K-group K_q(X) vanishes for every q < -d. This partially affirms a conjecture of Weibel.
In this article, we study the relative negative K-groups $K_{-n}(f)$ of a map $f: X \to S $ of schemes. We prove a relative version of the Weibel conjecture i.e. if $f: X \to S$ is a smooth affine map of noetherian schemes with $\dim S=d$ then $K_{-n}(f)=0$ for $n> d+1$ and the natural map $K_{-n}(f) \to K_{-n}(f \times \mathbb{A}^{r})$ is an isomorphism for all $r>0$ and $n>d.$ We also prove a vanishing result for relative negative K-groups of a subintegral map.
We show that the homotopy invariant algebraic K-theory of Weibel vanishes below the negative of the Krull dimension of a noetherian scheme. This gives evidence for a conjecture of Weibel about vanishing of negative algebraic K-groups.
We show how a theorem of Gabber on alterations can be used to apply work of Cisinski, Suslin, Voevodsky, and Weibel to prove that $K_n(X)[1/p] = 0$ for $n < - \dim X$ where $X$ is a quasi-excellent noetherian scheme, $p$ is a prime that is nilpotent on $X$, and $K_n$ is the $K$-theory of Bass-Thomason-Trobaugh. This gives a partial answer to a question of Weibel.
Making use of Gruson-Raynaud's technique of "platification par eclatement", Kerz and Strunk proved that the negative homotopy K-theory groups of a Noetherian scheme X of Krull dimension d vanish below -d. In this note, making use of noncommutative algebraic geometry, we improve this result in the case of quotient singularities by proving that the negative homotopy K-theory groups vanish below -1. Furthermore, in the case of cyclic quotient singularities, we provide an explicit "upper bound" for the first negative homotopy K-theory group.
In a 2006 article Schlichting conjectured that the negative {\it K--}theory of any abelian category must vanish. This conjecture was generalized in a 2019 article by Antieau, Gepner and Heller, who hypothesized that the negative {\it K--}theory of any category with a bounded {\it t--}structure must vanish. Both conjectures will be shown to be false.
We prove that the homotopy algebraic K-theory of tame quasi-DM stacks satisfies cdh-descent. We apply this descent result to prove that if X is a Noetherian tame quasi-DM stack and i < -dim(X), then K_i(X)[1/n] = 0 (resp. K_i(X, Z/n) = 0) provided that n is nilpotent on X (resp. is invertible on X). Our descent and vanishing results apply more generally to certain Artin stacks whose stabilizers are extensions of finite group schemes by group schemes of multiplicative type.
We establish the analogue of the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture for Teh's reduced Lawson homology groups of real varieties, which says that the reduced Lawson homology of a real quasi-projective variety $X$ vanishes in homological degrees larger than the dimension of $X$ in all weights. As an application we obtain a vanishing of homotopy groups of the mod-2 topological groups of averaged cycles and a characterization in a range of indices of the motivic cohomology of a real variety as homotopy groups of the complex of averaged equidimensional cycles. We also establish an equivariant Poincare dua…
For perverse sheaves K on abelian varieties X defined over a finitely generated field F we prove that the Euler-Poincare characteristic (defined for the extension of K to the algebraic closure of F) is non-negative.
We study the negative $K$-theory of singular varieties over a field of positive characteristic and in particular, prove the vanishing of $K_i(X)$ for $i < -d-2$ for a $k$-variety of dimension $d$.
The geometric monodromy of a plane curve singularity is a quasi-finite diffeomorphism. In this paper we locate the reduction curves of the geometric monodromy and the quadratic vanishing cycles of the singularity. An application to the geometric monodromy group is given.
Let $X$ be a closed Riemann surface. When $X$ is embedded into a projective space, the first rational cohomology group can be concretely obtained from the monodromy in the family of its smooth hyperplane sections by C. Schnell's tube mapping. We generalize this result to the first integral homology group by relating the tube mapping with the topological Abel--Jacobi mapping. By making use of the mapping class group action, we prove that all tube classes constructed from the elementary vanishing cycles form a cofinite subgroup of the first integral homology group of $X$.
We explicitly construct a del Pezzo surface $X$ of degree 4 over a field $k$ such that $\operatorname{H}^1(k,\operatorname{Pic}\overline X)$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{ZZ}/2\mathbb{Z}$ while $\operatorname{Br} X/\operatorname{Br} k$ is trivial. This proves that the algorithm to compute the Brauer group in [VAV] cannot be generalized in some cases.
We study intersection theoretic problems in the setting of Chow-Witt groups with coefficients in a fixed Milnor-Witt cycle algebra over a perfect field. We prove that the product maps on such groups satisfy the following property: given two points in a regular local scheme with supports which do not intersect properly, their product vanishes. This gives an analogue of Serre's vanishing result for intersection multiplicities.
We prove an extension theorem for effective plt pairs $(X,S+B)$ of non-negative Kodaira dimension $κ(K_X+S+B)\geq 0$. The main new ingredient is a refinement of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi $L^2$ extension theorem involving singular hermitian metrics.
For a complex algebraic variety $X$, we show that triviality of the sheaf cohomology group $H^0(X,\mathcal{H}^3)$ occurring on the second page of the Bloch-Ogus spectral sequence follows from a condition on the integral Chow group $CH^2X$ and the integral cohomology group $H^3(X, Z)$. In the case that $X$ is an appropriate approximation to the classifying stack $BG$ of a finite $p$-group $G$, this result states that the group $G$ has no degree three cohomological invariants. As a corollary we show that the nonabelian groups of order $p^3$ for odd prime $p$ have no degree three cohomological in…

We employ the perverse vanishing cycles to show that each reduced cohomology group of the Milnor fiber, except the top two, can be computed from the restriction of the vanishing cycle complex to only singular strata with a certain lower bound in dimension. Guided by geometric results, we alternately use the nearby and vanishing cycle functors to derive information about the Milnor fiber cohomology via iterated slicing by generic hyperplanes. These lead to the description of the reduced cohomology groups, except the top two, in terms of the vanishing cohomology of the nearby section. We use it …
Let f be an isolated plane curve singularity with Milnor fiber of genus at least 5. For all such f, we give (a) an intrinsic description of the geometric monodromy group that does not invoke the notion of the versal deformation space, and (b) an easy criterion to decide if a given simple closed curve in the Milnor fiber is a vanishing cycle or not. With the lone exception of singularities of type $A_n$ and $D_n$, we find that both are determined completely by a canonical framing of the Milnor fiber induced by the Hamiltonian vector field associated to f. As a corollary we answer a question of …
We prove that cuspidal automorphic D-modules have non-vanishing Whittaker coefficients, generalizing known results in the geometric Langlands program from GL_n to general reductive groups. The key tool is a microlocal interpretation of Whittaker coefficients. We establish various exactness properties in the geometric Langlands context that may be of independent interest. Specifically, we show Hecke functors are t-exact on the category of tempered D-modules, strengthening a classical result of Gaitsgory (with different hypotheses) for GL_n. We also show that Whittaker coefficient functors are t…
We study the deformation-obstruction theory of Koszul cohomology groups of $g^r_d$'s on singular nodal curves. We compute the obstruction classes for Koszul cohomology classes on singular curves to deform to a smooth one. In the case the obstructions are nontrivial, we obtain some partial results for generic vanishing of Koszul cohomology groups.
Consider a root system $R$ and the corresponding toric variety $V_R$ whose fan is the Weyl fan and whose lattice of characters is given by the root lattice for $R$. We prove the vanishing of the higher cohomology groups for certain line bundles on $V_R$ by proving a purely combinatorial result for root systems. These results are related to a converse to Mazur's Inequality for (simply-connected) split reductive groups.
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
Given an ample line bundle on a toric surface, a question of Donaldson asks which simple closed curves can be vanishing cycles for nodal degenerations of smooth curves in the complete linear system. This paper provides a complete answer. This is accomplished by reformulating the problem in terms of the mapping class group-valued monodromy of the linear system, and giving a precise determination of this monodromy group.
In this article we propose a vanishing conjecture for a certain class of $\ell$-adic complexes on a reductive group $G$, which can be regraded as a generalization of the acyclicity of the Artin-Schreier sheaf. We show that the vanishing conjecture contains, as a special case, a conjecture of Braverman and Kazhdan on the acyclicity of $ρ$-Bessel sheaves \cite{BK1}. Along the way, we introduce a certain class of Weyl group equivariant $\ell$-adic complexes on a maximal torus called \emph{central complexes} and relate the category of central complexes to the Whittaker category on $G$. We prove th…
A general vanishing result for the first cohomology group of affine smooth complex varieties with values in rank one local systems is established. This is applied to the determination of the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of some line arrangements, including the monomial arrangement and the exceptional reflection arrangement of type $G_{31}$.
We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.
In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for $p$-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for …
