We present a detailed analysis of large scale simulations of avalanches in the 2D Abelian sandpile model. We compare statistical properties of two different decompositions of avalanches into clusters of topplings and waves of topplings. Auxiliary critical exponents are introduced and the existence of the exponent governing the contraction of avalanches claimed in our previous work [Priezzhev et al, PRL 76,2093 (1996)] is confirmed. We also give more elaborated argumentation for the exact values of the exponents characterizing the statistics of waves.
Time series resulting from wave decomposition show the existence of different correlation patterns for avalanche dynamics. For the d=2 Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model, long range correlations determine a modification of the wave size distribution under coarse graining in time, and multifractal scaling for avalanches. Appreciation of Stochastic Loewner evolution (SLE$_κ$), as a powerful tool to check for conformal invariant properties of geometrical features of critical systems has been rising. In this paper we use this method to check conformal invariance in sandpile models. Avalanche frontiers in Abelian sandpile model (ASM) are numerically shown to be conformally invariant and can be described by SLE with diffusivity $κ=2$. We describe the surface properties of a simple lattice model of a sandpile that includes evolving structural disorder. We present a dynamical scaling hypothesis for generic sandpile automata, and additionally explore the kinetic roughening of the sandpile surface, indicating its relationship with the sandpile evolution. Finally, we comment on the surprisingly good agreement found between this model, and a previous continuum model of sandpile dynamics, from the viewpoint of critical phenomena.

We show that deterministic systems with strong nonlinearities seem to be more appropriate to model sandpiles than stochastic systems or deterministic systems in which discontinuities are the only nonlinearity. In particular, we are able to reproduce the breakdown of Self-Organized Criticality found in two well known experiments, that is, a centrally fueled pile [Held et al. Phys. Rev. We perform extensive simulations of the sandpile model on a Sierpinski gasket. Critical exponents for waves and avalanches are determined. We extend the existing theory of waves to the present case. This leads to an exact value for the exponent $τ_w$ which describes the distribution of wave sizes: $τ_w = \ln{(9/5)}/\ln{3}$. Numerically, it is found that the number of waves in an avalanche is proportional to the number of distinct sites toppled in the avalanche. We present a directed unloading sand box type avalanche model, driven by slowly lowering the retaining wall at the bottom of the slope. The avalanche propagation in the two dimensional surface is related to the space-time configurations of one dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) type interface growth dynamics. We present and analyse in this paper three models of coupled continuum equations all united by a common theme: the intuitive notion that sandpile surfaces are left smoother by the propagation of avalanches across them. Two of these concern smoothing at the `bare' interface, appropriate to intermittent avalanche flow, while one of them models smoothing at the effective surface defined by a cloud of flowing grains across the `bare' interface, which is appropriate to the regime where avalanches flow continuously across the sandpile.

For undirected models, avalanche exponents are those of directed percolation clusters in one higher dimension.
We introduce and study a new directed sandpile model with threshold dynamics and stochastic toppling rules. We show that particle conservation law and the directed percolation-like local evolution of avalanches lead to the formation of a spatial structure in the steady state, with the density developing a power law tail away from the top. We determine the scaling exponents characterizing the avalanche distributions in terms of the critical exponents of directed percolation in all dimensions.

An analysis of moments and spectra shows that, while the distribution of avalanche areas obeys finite size scaling, that of toppling numbers is universally characterized by a full, nonlinear multifractal spectrum. Rare, large avalanches dissipating at the border influence the statistics very sensibly. Only once they are excluded from the sample, the conditional toppling distribution for given area simplifies enough to show also a well defined, multifractal scaling. The resulting picture brings to light unsuspected, novel physics in the model.
In a model of self-organized criticality unstable sites discharge to just one of their neighbors. For constant discharge ratio $α$ and for a certain range of values of the input energy, avalanches are simple branchless Pólya random walks, and their scaling properties can be derived exactly. If $α$ fluctuates widely enough, avalanches become branched, due to multiple discharges, and behave like those of the stochastic sandpile. At the threshold for branched behaviour, peculiar scaling and anomalous diffusive transport are observed.
We perform large scale numerical simulations of a directed version of the two-state stochastic sandpile model. Numerical results show that this stochastic model defines a new universality class with respect to the Abelian directed sandpile. The physical origin of the different critical behavior has to be ascribed to the presence of multiple topplings in the stochastic model. These results provide new insights onto the long debated question of universality in abelian and stochastic sandpiles.
A general n-state directed `sandpile' model is introduced. The stationary properties of the n-state model are derived for n < infty, and analytical arguments based on a central limit theorem show that the model belongs to the universality class of the totally asymmetric Oslo model, with a crossover to uncorrelated branching process behavior for small system sizes. Hence, the central limit theorem allows us to identify the existence of a large universality class of one-dimensional directed sandpile models.

A dynamical transition separating intermittent and continuous flow is observed in a sandpile model, with scaling functions relating the transport behaviors between both regimes. The width of the active zone diverges with system size in the avalanche regime but becomes very narrow for continuous flow. The change of the mean slope, Delta z, on increasing the driving rate, r, obeys Delta z ~ r^{1/theta}. It has nontrivial scaling behavior in the continuous flow phase with an exponent theta given, paradoxically, only in terms of exponents characterizing the avalanches theta = (1+z-D)/(3-D).

In one-component abelian sandpile models, the toppling probabilities are independent quantities. This is not the case in multi-component models. The condition of associativity of the underlying abelian algebras impose nonlinear relations among the toppling probabilities. These relations are derived for the case of two-component quadratic abelian algebras. We show that abelian sandpile models with two conservation laws have only trivial avalanches.
We introduce and analytically solve a directed sandpile model with stochastic toppling rules. The model clearly belongs to a different universality class from its counterpart with deterministic toppling rules, previously solved by Dhar and Ramaswamy. The scaling properties of waves of topplings in the sandpile model on the Sierpinski gasket are investigated. The exponent describing the asymptotics of the distribution of last waves in an avalanche is found. Predictions for scaling exponents in the forward and backward conditional probabilites for two consecutive waves are given. All predictions were examined by numerical simulations and were found to be in reasonable agreement with the obtained data.
