Colmez has given a recipe to associate a smooth modular representation Omega(W) of the Borel subgroup of GL_2(Q_p) to a F_p^bar-representation W of Gal(Qp^bar/Qp) by using Fontaine's theory of (phi,Gamma)-modules. We compute Omega(W) explicitly and we prove that if W is irreducible and dim(W)=2, then Omega(W) is the restriction to the Borel subgroup of GL_2(Q_p) of the supersingular representation associated to W in Breuil's correspondence.
This paper studies Emerton's Jacquet module functor for locally analytic representations of p-adic reductive groups. When P is a parabolic subgroup whose Levi factor M is not commutative, we show that passing to an isotypical subspace for the derived subgroup of M gives rise to essentially admissible locally analytic representations of the torus Z(M), which have a natural interpretation in terms of rigid geometry. We use this to extend Emerton's representation-theoretic construction of eigenvarieties by constructing eigenvarieties interpolating automorphic representations whose local component…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field and let $p$ be the residual characteristic of $F$. Let $G=GL_2(F)$ and let $P$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$. In this paper we study the restriction of irreducible representations of $G$ on $E$-vector spaces to $P$, where $E$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. We show that in a certain sense $P$ controls the representation theory of $G$. We then extend our results to smooth $\oK[G]$- modules of finite length and unitary $K$-Banach space representations of $G$, where $\oK$ is the ring of integers of a complete discretely valued field $K…
Let E be a finite extension of Fp. Using Fontaine's theory of (phi,Gamma)-modules, Colmez has shown how to attach to any irreducible E-linear representation of Gal(Qpbar/Qp) an infinite dimensional smooth irreducible E-linear representation of B_2(Qp) that has a central character. We prove that every such representation of B_2(Qp) arises in this way. Our proof extends to algebraically closed fields E of characteristic p. In this case, infinite dimensional smooth irreducible E-linear representations of B_2(Qp) having a central character arise in a similar way from irreducible E-linear represent…
We study the homology and the Borel-Moore homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ of a quotient (called arithmetic quotient) of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ of a nonarchimedean local field of positive characteristic by an arithmetic subgroup (a special case of the general definition in Harder's article (Invent.\ Math.\ 42, 135-175 (1977)). We define an analogue of modular symbols in this context and show that the image of the canonical map from homology to Borel-Moore homology is contained in the sub $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the modular symbols. By definition, th…
It is known that the Selberg zeta function for the modular group has an expression in terms of the class numbers and the fundamental units of the indefinite binary quadratic forms. In the present paper, we generalize such a expression to any congruence subgroup of the modular groups in SL(2,R) and SL(2,C).
Classically, congruence subgroups of the modular group, which can be described by congruence relations, play important roles in group theory and modular forms. In reality, the majority of finite index subgroups of the modular group are noncongruence. These groups as well as their modular forms are central players of this survey article. Differences between congruence and noncongruence subgroups and modular forms will be discussed. We will mainly focus on three interesting aspects of modular forms for noncongruence subgroups: the unbounded denominator property, modularity of the Galois represen…
In this paper we will use experimental and computational methods to find modular forms for non-congruence subgroups, and the modular forms for congruence subgroups that they are associated with via the Atkin--Swinnerton-Dyer correspondence. We also prove a generalization of a criterion due to Ligozat for an eta-quotient to be a modular function.
We give a computationally effective criterion for determining whether a finite-index subgroup of SL(2, Z) is a congruence subgroup, extending earlier work of Hsu for subgroups of PSL(2, Z).
We present a database of several hundred modular forms up to and including weight six on noncongruence subgroups of index $\leq 17$. In addition, our database contains expressions for the Belyi map for genus zero subgroups and equations of the corresponding elliptic curves for genus one subgroups and numerical approximations of noncongruence Eisenstein series to 1500 digits precision.
In this paper, we consider modular forms for finite index subgroups of the modular group whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic. It is well-known that the Fourier coefficients of any holomorphic modular form for a congruence subgroup (with algebraic coefficients) have bounded denominators. It was observed by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer that this is no longer true for modular forms for noncongruence subgroups and they pointed out that unbounded denominator property is a clear distinction between modular forms for noncongruence and congruence modular forms. It is an open question whether genuine…
We introduce and study families of finite index subgroups of the modular group that generalize the congruence subgroups. Such groups, termed $ϕ$-congruence subgroups, are obtained by reducing homomorphisms $ϕ$ from the modular group into a linear algebraic group modulo integers. In particular, we examine two families of examples, arising on the one hand from a map into a quasi-unipotent group, and on the other hand from maps into symplectic groups of degree four. In the quasi-unipotent case we also provide a detailed discussion of the corresponding modular forms, using the fact that the tower …
In this paper we describe a method for computing a basis for the space of weight $2$ cusp forms invariant under a non-split Cartan subgroup of prime level $p$. As an application we compute, for certain small values of $p$, explicit equations over $\bf Q$ for the canonical embeddings of the associated modular curves.
We research the location of the zeros of the Eisenstein series and the modular functions from the Hecke type Faber polynomials associated with the normalizers of congruence subgroups which are of genus zero and of level at most twelve. In Part I, we will consider the general theory of modular functions for the normalizers.
In this paper we show two classes of noncongruence subgroups satisfy the so-called unbounded denominator property. In particular, we establish our conjecture in [KL08] which says that every type II noncongruence character group of Gamma^0(11) satisfies the unbounded denominator property.
In this paper, we study the torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ over the field generated by those points in the cuspidal group, where $N$ is an odd positive integer. We prove that, considered as Hecke modules, this group and the cuspidal subgroup are both supported at the maximal Eisenstein ideals.
For any positive integer $N$, we prove that the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ agrees with its rational cuspidal subgroups up to a factor of $6N\prod_{p\mid N}(p^2-1)$. Moreover, for modular Jacobians of the form $J_0(DC)$ with $D$ a positive square-free integer and $C$ any positive divisor of $D$, we prove that the $ψ$-part of the torsion subgroup of $J_0(DC)$ agrees with the $ψ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup up to a factor of $6D\prod_{p\mid D}(p^2-1)$, where $ψ$ is any quadratic character of conductor dividing $C$.
We investigate the homology of a congruence subgroup Gamma of SL_3(Z) with coefficients in the Steinberg modules St(Q^3) and St(E^3), where E is a real quadratic field and the coefficients are Q. By Borel-Serre duality, H_0(Gamma, St(Q^3)) is isomorphic to H^3(Gamma,Q). Taking the image of the connecting homomorphism H_1(Gamma, St(E^3)/St(Q^3)) \to H_0(Gamma, St(Q^3)), followed by the Borel-Serre isomorphism, we obtain a naturally defined Hecke-stable subspace H(Gamma,E) of H^3(Gamma,Q). We conjecture that H(Gamma,E) is independent of E and consists of the cuspidal cohomology H_cusp^3(Gamma,Q)…
We present two approaches that can be used to compute modular forms on noncongruence subgroups. The first approach uses Hejhal's method for which we improve the arbitrary precision solving techniques so that the algorithm becomes about up to two orders of magnitude faster in practical computations. This allows us to obtain high precision numerical estimates of the Fourier coefficients from which the algebraic expressions can be identified using the LLL algorithm. The second approach is restricted to genus zero subgroups and uses efficient methods to compute the Belyi map from which the modular…
We complete the description of semistable models for modular curves associated with maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_2 ({\mathbb F}_p )$ (for $p$ any prime, $p>5$). That is, in the new cases of non-split Cartan modular curves and exceptional subgroups, we identify the irreducible components and singularities of the reduction mod $p$, and the complete local rings at the singularities. We review the case of split Cartan modular curves. This description suffices for computing the group of connected components of the fibre at $p$ of the Néron model of the Jacobian.
We give new examples of weight three cusp forms on noncongruence subgroups of SL(2, Z) whose Scholl representation is modular and which satisfy three term Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer relations.
We obtain new results on the geometry of Hilbert modular varieties in positive characteristic and morphisms between them. Using these results and methods of rigid geometry, we develop a theory of canonical subgroups for abelian varieties with real multiplication.
We research the location of the zeros of the Eisenstein series and the modular functions from the Hecke type Faber polynomials associated with the normalizers of congruence subgroups which are of genus zero and of level at most twelve. In Part II, we will observe the location of the zeros of the above functions by numerical calculation.
We prove a formula of Petersson's type for Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2 with respect to congruence subgroups, and as a corollary, show upper bound estimates of individual Fourier coefficient. The method in this paper is essentially a generalization of Kitaoka's previous work which studied the full modular case, but some modification is necessary to obtain estimates which are sharp with respect to the level aspect.
Deligne proved that the weights of Siegel modular forms on any congruence subgroup of the Siegel modular group of genus g>1 must be integral or half integral. We give a different proof for this. It uses Mennicke's result that subgroups of finite index of the Siegel modular group are congruence subgroups and some techniques from a paper of Bass-Milnor-Serre.
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
After Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli $j(z)$ are Fourier coefficients of a weakly holomorphic modular form, various properties of the traces of the singular values of modular functions mostly on the full modular group $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ have been investigated such as their exact formulas, limiting distribution, duality, and congruences. The purpose of this paper is to generalize these arithmetic properties of traces of singular values of a weakly holomorphic modular function on the full modular group to those on a congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$.
Let $G$ be an almost simple, simply connected algebraic group defined over a number field $k$, and let $S$ be a finite set of places of $k$ including all infinite places. Let $X$ be the product over $v\in S$ of the symmetric spaces associated to $G(k_v)$, when $v$ is an infinite place, and the Bruhat-Tits buildings associated to $G(k_v)$, when $v$ is a finite place. The main result of this paper is an explicit computation of the fundamental group of the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of $Γ\backslash X$, where $Γ$ is an $S$-arithmetic subgroup of $G$. In the case that $Γ$ is neat, we sh…
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
We derive explicit isomorphisms between certain congruence subgroups of the Siegel modular group, the Hermitian modular group over an arbitrary imaginary-quadratic number field and the modular group over the Hurwitz quaternions of degree 2 and the discriminant kernels of special orthogonal groups SO 0 (2, n), n = 3, 4, 6. The proof is based on an application of linear algebra adapted to the number theoretical needs.
Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over a finite field $F_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In an earlier paper we have shown that the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ has automorphisms which map congruence subgroups to non-congruence subgroups. Here we prove the existence of (uncountably many) normal genuine non-congruence subgroups, defined to be those which remain non-congruence under the action of every automorphism of $G$. In addition, for all but finitely many cases we evaluate $ngncs(G)$, the smallest index of a normal genuine non-co…
We give a new, simple proof of the trace formula for Hecke operators on modular forms for finite index subgroups of the modular group. The proof uses algebraic properties of certain universal Hecke operators acting on period polynomials of modular forms, and it generalizes an approach developed by Don Zagier and the author for the modular group. This approach leads to a very simple formula for the trace on the space of cusp forms plus the trace on the space of modular forms. As applications, we investigate what happens when varying the weight or the level in the trace formula.
We establish a correspondence between generalized quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and congruence subgroups of the modular group, hinging upon the trivalent graphs which arise in both. The gauge theories and the graphs are enumerated and their numbers are compared. The correspondence is particularly striking for genus zero torsion-free congruence subgroups as exemplified by those which arise in Moonshine. We analyze in detail the case of index 24, where modular elliptic K3 surfaces emerge: here, the elliptic j-invariants can be recast as dessins d'enfant which dictate the Seiberg-Witte…
We derive an explicit isomorphism between the Hilbert modular group and certain congruence subgroups on the one hand and particular subgroups of the special orthogonal group $SO(2, 2)$ on the other hand. The proof is based on an application of linear algebra adapted to number theoretical needs.
We study modular forms for the minimal index noncongruence subgroups of the modular group. Our main theorem is a proof of the unbounded denominator conjecture for these groups, and we also provide a study of the Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series for one of these minimal groups.
Given an imaginary quadratic extension $K$ of $\mathbb Q$, we give a classification of the maximal nonelementary subgroups of the Picard modular group $\operatorname{PSU}_{1,2}(\mathcal O_K)$ preserving a complex geodesic in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2_\mathbb C$. Complementing work of Holzapfel, Chinburg-Stover and Möller-Toledo, we show that these maximal $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups are arithmetic, arising from a quaternion algebra $\Big(\!\begin{array}{c} D\,,D_K\\\hline\mathbb QQ\end{array} \!\Big)$ for some explicit $D\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$ and $D_K$ the discriminant of $K$.…
We study the rational torsion subgroup of the modular Jacobian $J_0(N)$ for $N$ a square-free integer. We give a new proof of a result of Ohta on a generalization of Ogg's conjecture: for a prime number $p \nmid 6N$, the $p$-primary part of the rational torsion subgroup equals that of the cuspidal subgroup. Whereas previous proofs of this result used explicit computations of the cardinalities of these groups, we instead use their structure as modules for the Hecke algebra.
In the course of the proof of the irrationality of zeta(2) R. Apery introduced numbers b_n = \sum_{k=0}^n {n \choose k}^2{n+k \choose k}. Stienstra and Beukers showed that for the prime p > 3 Apery numbers satisfy congruence b((p-1)/2) = 4a^2-2p mod p, if p = a^2+b^2 (where a is odd). Later, Zagier found some generalizations of Apery numbers, so called sporadic sequences, and recently Osburn and Straub proved similar congruences for all but one of the six Zagier's sporadic sequences (three cases were already known to be true) and conjectured the congruence for the sixth sequence. In this paper…
Let $G$ be a subgroup of $S_{n}$, the symmetric group of degree $n$. For any field $k$, $G$ acts naturally on the rational function field $k(x_{1},\cdots,x_{n})$ via $k$-automorphisms defined by $σ\cdot x_{i}:=x_{σ\cdot i}$ for any $σ\in G$ and $1\leq i\leq n$. In this article, we will show that if $G$ is a solvable transitive subgroup of $S_{14}$ and $\text{char}(k)=7$, then the fixed subfield $k(x_{1},\cdots,x_{14})^{G}$ is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over $k$. In proving the above theorem, we rely on the Kuniyoshi-Gaschütz Theorem or some ideas in its proof.
We give an overview of the category of subgroups of the modular group, incorporating both the tame part, i.e. finite index subgroups, and the non-tame part, i.e. the rest. We also discuss arithmetic related questions which exist in both the tame part (via Belyi's theorem) and the non-tame part.
Beyond the crucial role they play in the foundations of the theory of overconvergent modular forms, canonical subgroups have found new applications to analytic continuation of overconvergent modular forms. For such applications, it is essential to understand various ``numerical'' aspects of the canonical subgroup, and in particular, the precise extent of its overconvergence. We develop a theory of canonical subgroups for a general class of curves (including the unitary and quaternionic Shimura curves), using formal and rigid geometry. In our approach, we use the common geometric features of th…
For the group PSL(2,Z) it is known that there is an isomorphism between polynomial eigenfunctions of the transfer operator for the geodesic flow and the Eichler cohomology in the theory of modular forms. In a recent paper by Chang and Mayer it is indicated that such an isomorphism exists as well for certain subgroups of PSL(2,Z). We prove this and provide some evidence by computer aided algebraic calculations that such an isomorphism exists for all principal congruence subgroups and all congruence subgroups of Hecke type.
In this paper we give an explicit formula for the number of subgroups of the modular group of a given index that are genus zero and torsion-free and a formula for their conjugacy classes. We do so by exhibiting a correspondence between these groups and the trivalent maps on a sphere. We focus on the particular case of the subgroups of index 18 which have some interesting geometric properties.
