We derive the molecular properties for a sample of 301 Galactic HII regions including 123 ultra compact (UC), 105 compact, and 73 diffuse nebulae. We analyze all sources within the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13CO emission known to be HII regions based upon the presence of radio continuum and cm-wavelength radio recombination line emission. Unlike all previous large area coverage 13CO surveys, the GRS is fully sampled in angle and yet covers ~75 square degrees of the Inner Galaxy. The angular resolution of the GRS 46" allows us to associate molecular gas with HII regions without ambiguity and to investigate the physical properties of this molecular gas. We find clear CO/HII morphological associations in position and velocity for ~80% of the nebular sample. Compact HII region molecular gas clouds are on average larger than UC clouds: 2.2' compared to 1.7'. Compact and UC HII regions have very similar molecular properties, with ~5K line intensities and ~4 km/s line widths. The diffuse HII region molecular gas has lower line intensities, ~3K, and smaller line widths, ~3.5 km/s. These latter characteristics are similar to those found for quiescent molecular clouds in the GRS. Our sample nebulae thus show evidence for an evolutionary sequence wherein small, dense molecular gas clumps associated with UC HII regions grow into older compact nebulae and finally fragment and dissipate into large, diffuse nebulae.
We resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity for 266 inner Galaxy HII regions out of a sample of 291 using existing HI and 13CO sky surveys. Our sample contains all HII regions with measured radio recombination line (RRL) emission over the extent of the 13CO Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (18 deg, < l < 55 deg. and |b| < 1) and contains ultra compact, compact, and diffuse HII regions. We use two methods for resolving the distance ambiguity for each HII region: HI emission/absorption (HIEA) and HI self-absorption (HISA). We find that the HIEA and …
We carried out 13CO J=1-0, CS, and C34S J=2-1 and J=3-2 line observations of molecular clouds associated with 16 ultracompact (UC) HII regions with extended envelopes. The molecular clouds are the ones that give birth to rich stellar clusters and/or very massive (O7-O4) stars. Our data show that the clouds are very clumpy and of irregular morphology. They usually have much larger masses, velocity dispersions, and fractions of dense gas than molecular clouds that form early B or late O stars. This is compatible with earlier findings that more massive stars form in more massive cores. 13CO cores…
We present radio continuum images of three Galactic HII regions, S 201, S 206, and S 209 near 232, 327, and 610 MHz using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The GMRT has a mix of short and long baselines, therefore, even though the data have high spatial resolution, the maps are still sensitive to diffuse extended emission. We find that all three HII regions have bright cores surrounded by diffuse envelopes. We use the high resolution afforded by the data to estimate the electron temperatures and emission measures of the compact cores of these HII regions. Our estimates of electron te…
The Carina Nebula is an extremely bright southern HII region embedded in a giant molecular cloud and contains some of the most massive stars known in our Galaxy. We are undertaking a multi-wavelength study of the Carina Nebula in order to examine the detailed kinematics and distribution of the molecular and ionised gas, and to look for further evidence of ongoing star formation. Here we present the results of the initial molecular cloud observations which were made by observing the 12CO(1-0) emission with the Mopra antenna. The observations reveal the clumpy morphology of the molecular gas, an…
Extensive photoionization model grids for single star HII regions using a variety of recent state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models have been computed with the main aim of constraining/testing their predicted ionizing spectra against recent ISO mid-IR observations of Galactic HII regions, which probe the ionizing spectra between ~ 24 and 41 eV thanks to Ne, Ar, and S fine structure lines. Particular care has been paid to examining in detail the dependences of the nebular properties on the numerous nebular parameters (mean ionization parameter U, abundances, dust etc.) which are generally un…
By collecting the information from 24 previously published lists and catalogs, we produce a comprehensive catalog (Master Catalog) of 1442 Galactic HII regions. For each object, we quote the original fluxes and diameters as well as the available information on radio line velocities, line widths and line temperatures and the errors on these quantitities. References to the original works are also reported. By exploiting all these data we produce a Synthetic Catalog of fluxes and diameters (with corresponding errors) at 2.7 GHz. This choice is motivated by the extensive, although not complete, in…
We assess the impact of Galactic synchrotron foreground removal on the observation of high-redshift quasar HII regions in redshifted 21-cm emission. We consider the case where a quasar is observed in an intergalactic medium (IGM) whose ionisation structure evolves slowly relative to the light crossing time of the HII region, as well as the case where the evolution is rapid. The latter case is expected towards the end of the reionisation era where the highest redshift luminous quasars will be observed. In the absence of foregrounds the fraction of neutral hydrogen in the IGM could be measured d…
We present a Suzaku X-ray study of the Sagittarius D (Sgr D) HII region in the Galactic center region. Two 18'x18' images by the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) encompass the entire Sgr D complex. Thanks to the low background, XIS discovered two diffuse sources with low surface brightness and obtained their high signal-to-noise ratio spectra. One is associated with the core of the Sgr D HII region, arising from the young stellar cluster. The other is a new object in the vicinity of the region. We also present 3.5 cm and 6.0 cm radio continuum maps of the new source using the 100 m Green Bank …
Aims: We searched for the molecular outflows from fifteen molecular clouds associated with ultra-compact and compact HII (UCHII/HII) regions and discussed possible gas heating mechanism. Methods: Mapping observations of CO $J=3-2$ and $J=2-1$ lines were carried out with the KOSMA 3m-Telescope towards the 15 HII regions/molecular cloud complexes. Results: Ten molecular outflows were identified out of the fifteen HII region/molecular cloud complexes. The higher outflow detection rate (67%) suggested that such outflows are as common in high mass star forming regions as those in low mass star form…
Aims: We wish to establish whether sequential star formation is taking place at the periphery of the Galactic HII region Sh2-212. Methods: We present CO millimetre observations of this region obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope to investigate the distribution of associated molecular material. We also use deep JHK observations obtained at the CFHT to study the stellar content of the region, and radio observations obtained at the VLA to look for the presence of an ultra-compact (UC) HII region and for maser emission. Results: In the optical, Sh2-212 is spherically symmetric around its central ex…
We present a new, detailed, analysis of the spatial distribution of Galactic HII regions, exploiting a far richer database than used in previous analyses. Galactocentric distances have been derived for 550 objects. Distances from the Sun could be unambiguously derived from velocity data for 117 of them, lying either outside the solar circle (84) or on a line-of-sight tangential to their orbit (33). For 177 further sources, distance estimates are made possible by the use of auxiliary data. A highly significant correlation between luminosity and linear diameter was found and the corresponding le…
We present a new compilation of Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies and extra-galactic HII regions showing BROAD HeII emission drawn from the literature. Relevant information on the presence of other broad emission lines (NIII 4640, CIV 5808 and others) from WR stars of WN and WC subtypes, and other existing broad nebular lines is provided. In total we include 139 known WR galaxies. Among these, 57 objects show both broad HeII and CIV features. In addition to the broad (stellar) HeII emission, a NEBULAR HeII component is well established (suspected) in 44 (54) objects. We find 19 extra-galatic HII region…
The methods of abundance determinations in HII regions and planetary nebulae are described, with emphasis on the underlying assumptions and inherent problems. Recent results on abundances in Galactic HII regions and in Galactic and extragalactic Planetary Nebulae are reviewed.
We study the expansion of the ionization and dissociation fronts (DFs) in a radially stratified molecular cloud, whose density distribution is represented as n(r) \propto r^-w. We focus on cases with w \leq 1.5, when the ionization front is ``trapped'' in the cloud and expands with the preceding shock front. The simultaneous evolution of the outer photodissociation region (PDR) is examined in detail. First, we analytically probe the time evolution of the column densities of the shell and envelope outside the HII region, which are key physical quantities for the shielding of dissociating photon…
We present observations of the H91$α$ recombination line emission towards a sample of nine HII regions associated with 6.7-GHz methanol masers, and report arcsecond-scale emission around compact cores. We derive physical parameters for our sources, and find that although simple hydrostatic models of region evolution reproduce the observed region sizes, they significantly underestimate emission measures. We argue that these findings are consistent with young source ages in our sample, and can be explained by existence of density gradients in the ionised gas.
We present new observations of the ultra-compact HII region G28.20-0.05 in 23 GHz continuum, and the NH3(1,1), NH3(2.2), and NH3(3,3) lines. To explain the complicated kinematics of the molecular gas, we propose a model consisting of two components. One component is an infalling, equatorial torus of molecular gas, whose dense central region has been ionized to form the ultra-compact HII region. The second component is a larger expanding molecular shell driven by some type of wide-angle outflow or wind. We estimate that the infall component includes more than 18 Msun of molecular gas. We calcul…
We present mid-infrared ISO-SWS observations of the fine-structure emissions lines [NeII]12.8, [NeIII]15.6, [NeIII]36, [ArII]6.9, [ArIII]8.9, [SIII]18.7, [SIII]33.5, [SIV]10.5, and the recombination lines Br_alpha and Br_beta, in a sample of 112 Galactic HII regions and 37 nearby extra-galactic HII regions in the LMC, SMC, and M33. The Galactic sources have a wide range in galactocentric distance (0<R<18kpc), which enables us to study excitation and metallicity variations over large Galactic scales. We detect a steep rise in the [NeIII]15.6/[NeII]12.8,[ArIII]8.9/[ArII]6.9, and [SIV]10.5/[SIII]…
We are engaged in a multi-wavelength study of several Galactic HII regions that exhibit signposts of triggered star formation on their borders, and where the collect and collapse process could be at work. When addressing the question of triggered star formation it is critically important to ensure the real association between the ionized gas and the neutral material observed nearby. In this paper we stress this point, and present CO observations of the RCW 82 star forming region. The velocity distribution of the molecular gas is combined with the study of young stellar objects (YSOs) detected …
We have carried out a submillimeter continuum and spectroscopic study of the W43 main complex, a massive star-forming region, which harbors a giant HII region. The maps reveal a filamentary structure containing ~50 fragments with masses of 40-4000 Msun and typical diameters of 0.25 pc. Their large sizes, large non-thermal velocities (Dv ~ 5 km/s), and high densities (n_H2 ~ 10^6 cm^-3) suggest that they are protoclusters and excellent sites to form massive stars. Follow-up observations are necessary, but we have already identified three protoclusters to be very good candidates for containing v…
Using the NIFS near-infrared integral-field spectrograph behind the facility adaptive optics module, ALTAIR, on Gemini North, we have identified several massive O-type stars that are responsible for the ionization of the Galactic Ultra-Compact HII region G45.45+0.06. The sources ``m'' and ``n'' from the imaging study of Feldt et a. 1998 are classified as hot, massive O-type stars based on their K-band spectra. Other bright point sources show red and/or nebular spectra and one appears to have cool star features that we suggest are due to a young, low-mass pre-main sequence component. Still two …
We present visible and near IR images of the compact HII region Sh 152. Some of these images reveal the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) around 698 nm and emission from Unidentified Infra Red Bands (UIRBs) at 3.3 and 6.2 micron. Other images show the near infrared (7-12 micron) continuous emission of the nebula. The ERE emission is found to coincide with the ionized region and significantly differ from the UIRBs location. Also some evidence is found in favor of grains as carriers for ERE.
At low radio frequencies (< 100 MHz), classical HII regions may become optically thick (optical depth > 1) and can be observed as discrete absorption regions against the Galactic nonthermal background emission created by Galactic cosmic ray electrons spiraling around magnetic fields. In this work we present 74 MHz observations in the region 26>l>-15, -5<b<5, and report the detection of 92 absorption features associated with known HII regions, and derive the brightness temperature of the Galactic cosmic ray electron synchrotron emission emanating from the column behind these regions. For the 42…
We present SEST-SIMBA 1.2-mm continuum maps and ESO-NTT SOFI JHK images of the Galactic HII region RCW 79. The millimetre continuum data reveal the presence of massive fragments located in a dust emission ring surrounding the ionized gas. The two most massive fragments are diametrically opposite each other in the ring. The near-IR data, centred on the compact HII region located at the south-eastern border of RCW 79, show the presence of an IR-bright cluster containing massive stars along with young stellar objects with near-IR excesses. A bright near- and mid-IR source is detected towards mase…
We use 2MASS and MSX infrared observations, along with new molecular line (CO) observations, to examine the distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the molecular cloud surrounding the halo HII region KR 140 in order to determine if the ongoing star-formation activity in this region is dominated by sequential star formation within the photodissociation region (PDR) surrounding the HII region. We find that KR 140 has an extensive population of YSOs that have spontaneously formed due to processes not related to the expansion of the HII region. Much of the YSO population in the molecular c…
We utilize new VLA Galactic plane catalogs at 5 and 1.4 GHz covering the first Galactic quadrant (350<l<42, |b|<0.4) in conjunction with the MSX6C Galactic plane catalog to construct a large sample of ultra-compact HII regions. A radio catalog of this region was first published by Becker et al. (1994), but we have added new observations and re-reduced the data with significantly improved calibration and mosaicing procedures, resulting in a tripling of the number of 5 GHz sources detected. Comparison of the new 5 GHz catalog and the MSX6C Galactic plane catalog resulted in a sample of 687 match…
We present new observations of IRAS 04000+5052, a Galactic HII region associated with a young stellar cluster and possibly located at the Perseus arm. Contrary to previous claims, we have found that this object is not a compact metal-poor HII region. The electron density and chemical composition of the nebula are similar to those of normal HII regions of the Galactic disk. The radial velocity of the ionized gas coincides with that obtained from CO observations, indicating that the nebula is associated with a molecular cloud. Probably, the ionizing source of the HII region is a Herbig Be star o…
We present high resolution (0.''12 x 0.''079) observations of the ultracompact HII region G10.6-0.4 in 23 GHz radio continuum and the NH3(3,3) line. Our data show that the infall in the molecular material is largely spherical, and does not flatten into a molecular disk at radii as small as 0.03 pc. The spherical infall in the molecular gas matches in location and velocity the infall seen in the ionized gas. We use a non-detection to place a stringent upper limit on the mass of an expanding molecular shell associated with pressure driven expansion of the HII region. These data support a scenari…
We present results of deep echelle spectrophotometry of eight Galactic HII regions located at Galactocentric distances between 6.3 and 10.4 kpc. The data have been taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Ultraviolet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) in the 3100 to 10360 A range. We have derived C++ and O++ abundances from recombination lines for all the objects, as well as O+ abundances from this kind of lines for three of the nebulae. The intensity of recombination lines is almost independent of the assumed electron temperature as well as of the possible presence of spatial temperature variations…
Young massive stars or clusters are often observed at the peripheries of HII regions. What triggers star formation at such locations? Among the scenarios that have been proposed, the `collect and collapse' process is particularly attractive because it permits the formation of massive objects via the fragmentation of the dense shocked layer of neutral gas surrounding the expanding ionized zone. However, until our recent article on Sh 104, it had not been convincingly demonstrated that this process actually takes place. In the present paper we present our selection of seventeen candidate regions…
We present a new observation of the compact HII region, G29.96-0.02, that allows us to compare the velocity structure in the ionised gas and surrounding molecular gas directly. This allows us to remove most of the remaining ambiguity about the nature of this source. In particular, the comparison of the velocity structure present in the 4S-3P HeI lines with that found in the 1-0 S(1) of molecular hydrogern convincingly rules out a bow shock as being important to the kinematics of this source. Our new observation therefore agrees with our previous conclusion, drawn from a velocity resolved HI Br…
We report radio recombination line (RRL) and continuum observations of a sample of 106 Galactic HII regions made with the NRAO 140 Foot radio telescope in Green Bank, WV. We believe this to be the most sensitive RRL survey ever made for a sample this large. Most of our source integration times range between 6 and 90 hours which yield typical r.m.s. noise levels of 1.0--3.5 milliKelvins. Our data result from two different experiments performed, calibrated, and analyzed in similar ways. A CII survey was made at 3.5 cm wavelength to obtain accurate measurements of carbon radio recombination lines…
We have observed the $^{12}$CO J=2-1, J=3-2, and $^{13}$CO J=2-1 lines in a sample of seven giant molecular clouds in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. The $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO J=2-1 line ratio is constant across the entire sample, while the observed $^{12}$CO J=3-2/J=2-1 line ratio has a weak dependence on the star formation environment of the cloud, with large changes in the line ratio seen only for clouds in the immediate vicinity of an extremely luminous HII region. A large velocity gradient analysis indicates that clouds without HII regions have temperatures of 10-20 K, clouds with HII re…
To investigate the process of star formation triggered by the expansion of an HII region, we present a multi-wavelength analysis of the Galactic HII region RCW 120 and its surroundings. The collect and collapse model predicts that the layer of gas and dust accumulated between the ionization and shock fronts during the expansion of the HII region collapses and forms dense fragments, giving rise to potential sites of massive-star formation. The aim of our study is to look for such massive fragments and massive young stars on the borders of RCW 120. We mapped the RCW 120 region in the cold dust c…
We analyze the distribution of the interstellar matter in the environs of the HII region Gum31, excited by the open cluster NGC3324, located in the complex Carina region, with the aim of investigating the action of the massive stars on the surrounding neutral material. We use neutral hydrogen 21-cm line data, radio continuum images at 0.843, 2.4 and 4.9 GHz, 12CO(1-0) observations, and IRAS and MSX infrared data. Adopting a distance of 3 kpc for the HII region and the ionizing cluster, we derived an electron density of 33+/-3 cm^-3 and an ionized mass of (3.3+/-1.1)x10^3 Mo based on the radio …
We present a picture of star formation around the HII region Sh2-235 (S235) based upon data on the spatial distribution of young stellar clusters and the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas around S235. We observed 13CO(1-0) and CS(2-1) emission toward S235 with the Onsala Space Observatory 20-m telescope and analysed the star density distribution with archival data from the 2MASS survey. Dense molecular gas forms a shell-like structure at the south-eastern part of S235. The young clusters found with 2MASS data are embedded in this shell. The positional relationship of the clusters, t…
We present a method for simulating the evolution of HII regions driven by point sources of ionizing radiation in magnetohydrodynamic media, implemented in the three-dimensional Athena MHD code. We compare simulations using our algorithm to analytic solutions and show that the method passes rigorous tests of accuracy and convergence. The tests reveal several conditions that an ionizing radiation-hydrodynamic code must satisfy to reproduce analytic solutions. As a demonstration of our new method, we present the first three-dimensional, global simulation of an HII region expanding into a magnetiz…
The DR 21 massive star forming region contains two cometary HII regions, aligned nearly perpendicular to each other on the sky. This offers a unique opportunity to discriminate among models of cometary HII regions. We present hydrogen recombination and ammonia line observations of DR 21 made with the Very Large Array. The velocity of the molecular gas, measured from ammonia emission and absorption lines, is constant to within +/- 1 km/s across the region. However, the radial velocity of the ionized material, measured from hydrogen recombination lines, differs by approximately 9 km/s between th…
We present aperture synthesis imaging of dense molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud, taken with the prototype millimeter receivers of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our observations of the N113 HII region reveal a condensation with a size of ~6" (1.5 pc) FWHM, detected strongly in the 1-0 lines of HCO+, HCN and HNC, and weakly in C_2H. Comparison of the ATCA observations with single-dish maps from the Mopra Telescope and sensitive spectra from the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope indicates that the condensation is a massive clump of ~10^4 solar masses within a larger ~…
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) millimeter array was used to make observations of the CS(2-1) line (at 97.981 GHz) arising from the G0.07+0.04 region of the ``-30 km/s'' molecular cloud near the Galactic center with a spatial resolution of ~8". The ionized edges of this cloud forms the Arched Filament HII regions which are ionized by the adjacent Arches stellar cluster. The OVRO data were combined with single-dish data obtained at the 30-m IRAM telescope by Serabyn & Guesten (1987). A comparison of this CS(2-1) data and the H92alpha recombination line data of Lang, Goss & Morris (200…
The Galactic HII region NGC 2579 has stayed undeservedly unexplored due to identification problems which persisted until recently. Both NGC 2579 and its companion ESO 370-9 have been misclassified as planetary or reflection nebula, confused with each other and with other objects. Due to its high surface brightness, high excitation, angular size of few arcminutes and relatively low interstellar extinction, NGC 2579 is an ideal object for investigations in the optical range. Located in the outer Galaxy, NGC 2579 is an excellent object for studying the Galactic chemical abundance gradients. In th…
Using the Owens Valley and Nobeyama Radio Observatory interferometers, we carried out an unbiased search for hot molecular cores and ultracompact UC HII regions toward the high-mass star forming region G19.61--0.23. In addition, we performed 1.2 mm imaging with SIMBA, and retrieved 3.5 and 2 cm images from the VLA archive data base. The newly obtained 3 mm image brings information on a cluster of high-mass (proto)stars located in the innermost and densest part of the parsec scale clump detected in the 1.2 mm continuum. We identify a total of 10 high-mass young stellar objects: one hot core (HC…
We present numerical radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the evolution of HII regions formed in an inhomogeneous medium resulting from turbulence simulations. We find that the filamentary structure of the underlying density distribution produces a highly irregular shape for the ionized region, in which the ionization front escapes to large distances in some directions within 80,000 years. In other directions, on the other hand, neutral gas in the form of dense globules persists within 1 parsec of the central star for the full duration of our simulation (400,000 years). Divergent photoablatio…
We have obtained deep optical, long-slit spectrophotometry of the Galactic HII regions M 17, NGC 3576 and of the Magellanic Cloud HII regions 30 Doradus, LMC N11B and SMC N66, recording the optical recombination lines (ORLs) of CII, NII and OII. Temperature-insensitive ORL C2+/O2+ and N2+/O2 ratios are obtained for all nebulae except SMC N66. The ORL C2+/O2+ ratios show remarkable agreement within each galactic system, while also being in agreement with the corresponding CEL ratios. For all five nebulae, the O2+/H+ abundance derived from multiple OII ORLs is found to be higher than the corresp…
The molecular components of three giant HII regions (NGC 5461, NGC 5462, NGC 5471) in the galaxy M101 are investigated with new observations from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the NRAO 12-meter, and the Owens Valley millimeter array. Of the three HII regions, only NGC 5461 had previously been detected in CO emission. We calculate preliminary values for the molecular mass of the GMCs in NGC 5461 by assuming a CO-to-H_2 factor (X factor) and then compare these values with the virial masses. We conclude that the data in this paper demonstrate for the first time that the value of X may decrea…
We present millimetre-line imaging of the Galactic HII region Sh 104. We show that it is surrounded by a ring of molecular gas and dust. Four large molecular condensations are regularly spaced around the ring. These condensations are themselves fragmented and contain several massive dense cores. A deeply embedded cluster is observed in the near IR towards the largest condensation. It contains at least one massive star ionizing an ultra-compact HII region. The Sh 104 region is a good illustration of the `collect and collapse' model for star formation triggered by the expansion of an HII region.
We present chemical evolution models for the Galactic disk. We also present a new determination of X, Y, and Z for M17 a Galactic metal-rich Hii region. We compare our models for the Galactic disk with the Galactic Hii regions abundances. The $ΔY/ΔO$ ratio predicted from the galactic chemical evolution model is in very good agreement with the $ΔY/ΔO$ value derived from M17 and the primordial helium abundance, Yp, taking into account the presence of temperature variations in this Hii region. From the M17 observations we obtain that $ΔY/ΔZ = 1.97 \pm 0.41$, in excellent agreement with two $ΔY/ΔZ…
Context. Massive-star formation triggered by the expansion of HII regions. Aims. To understand if sequential star formation is taking place at the periphery of the HII region Sh2-219. Methods. We present 12CO(2-1) line observations of this region, obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope (Pico Veleta, Spain). Results. In the optical, Sh2-219 is spherically symmetric around its exciting star; furthermore it is surrounded along three quarters of its periphery by a ring of atomic hydrogen. This spherical symmetry breaks down at infrared and millimetre wavelengths. A molecular cloud of about 2000\msol …
{Magnetic fields exist on all scales in our Galaxy. There is a controversy about whether the magnetic fields in molecular clouds are preserved from the permeated magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) during cloud formation. We investigate this controversy using available data in the light of the newly revealed magnetic field structure of the Galactic disk obtained from pulsar rotation measures (RMs).} % {We collected measurements of the magnetic fields in molecular clouds, including Zeeman splitting data of OH masers in clouds and OH or HI absorption or emission lines of clouds them…
We examine the triggering process of molecular cloud formation around diffuse HII regions. We calculate the time evolution of the shell as well as of the HII region in a two-phase neutral medium, solving the UV and FUV radiative transfer, the thermal and chemical processes in the time-dependent hydrodynamics code. In the cold neutral medium, the ambient gas is swept up in the cold (T \sim 30-40K) and dense (n \sim 10^3 cm^-3) shell around the HII region. In the shell, H_2 molecules are formed from the swept-up HI gas, but CO molecules are hardly formed. The reformation of H_2 molecules is more…
$UBV$ photometry is used to re-identify the OB associations which power the two most luminous HII regions in M33, NGC 604 and NGC 595. There is a significant difference (2-3 Myr) in the ages of the most recent star formation episode in these two regions, while NGC 595 also has undergone a prior episode of star formation (10-15 Myr ago). These data, combined with the presence of molecular clouds in the heart of NGC 604, suggest that molecular clouds may survive at least one intense episode of massive star formation. The star formation efficiencies (mass of stars per mass of gas) of these two HI…
The unusual supernova remnant candidate G357.7-0.1 and the compact source G357.63-0.06 have been observed with the Very Large Array at 1.4 and 8.3 GHz. The H92$α$ line (8.3 GHz) was detected from the compact source with a surprising velocity of about -210 km/s indicating that this source is an \HII region, is most likely located at the Galactic center, and is unrelated to the SNR. The \HI absorption line (1.4 GHz) data toward these sources supports this picture and suggests that G357.7-0.1 lies farther away than the Galactic center.
We present an analysis of wind-blown, parsec-sized, mid-infrared bubbles and associated star-formation using GLIMPSE/IRAC, MIPSGAL/MIPS and MAGPIS/VLA surveys. Three bubbles from the Churchwell et al. (2006) catalog were selected. The relative distribution of the ionized gas (based on 20 cm emission), PAH emission (based on 8 um, 5.8 um and lack of 4.5 um emission) and hot dust (24 um emission) are compared. At the center of each bubble there is a region containing ionized gas and hot dust, surrounded by PAHs. We identify the likely source(s) of the stellar wind and ionizing flux producing eac…
We critically examine a scenario for the enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM) in which supernova ejecta follow a long (10^8 yr) journey before falling back onto the galactic disk in the form of metal-rich ``droplets'', These droplets do not become fully mixed with the interstellar medium until they become photoionized in HII regions. We investigate the hypothesis that the photoionization of these highly metallic droplets can explain the observed ``abundance discrepancy factors'' (ADFs), which are found when comparing abundances derived from recombination lines and from collisionally exc…
Previous observations show that the hypercompact HII region W51e2 is surrounded by a massive molecular accretion flow centered on the HII region. New observations of the H53alpha radio recombination line made with the VLA at 0.45 arc second angular resolution show a velocity gradient in the ionized gas within the HII region of > 500 kms-1 pc-1 comparable to the velocity gradient seen in the molecular accretion flow. New CO line observations made with the SMA at arc second angular resolution detect a molecular bipolar outflow immediately around the W51e2 HII region and extending along the axis …
We present the observational results of Galactic HII region S294, using optical photometry, narrow-band imaging and radio continuum mapping at 1280 MHz, together with archival data from 2MASS, MSX and IRAS surveys. The stellar surface density profile indicates that the radius of the cluster associated with the S294 region is ~ 2.3 arcmin. We found an anomalous reddening law for the dust inside the cluster region and the ratio of total-to-selective extinction is found to be 3.8+-0.1. We estimate the minimum reddening E (B-V) = 1.35 mag and distance of 4.8+-0.2 kpc to the region from optical CC …
We have mapped a giant molecular cloud in the giant HII region NGC 604 in M33 in the 492 GHz ^3P_1 -- ^3P_0 transition of neutral atomic carbon using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find the distribution of the [CI] emission to be asymmetric with respect to the CO J=1--0 emission, with the peak of the [CI] emission offset towards the direction of the center of the HII region. In addition, the line ratio I_{[CI]}/I_{CO} is highest (~ 0.2) facing the HII region and lowest (< 0.1) away from it. These asymmetries indicate an edge-on morphology where the [CI] emission is strongest on the side…
We have carried out 21 cm radio continuum, H76_αradio recombination line, and various (CO, ^13CO, CS, & C^34S) molecular line observations of the W31 complex. Our radio continuum data show that W31 is composed of two extended HII regions, G10.2-0.3 and G10.3-0.1, each of which comprises an ultracompact HII region, two or more compact components, and diffuse envelope. The W31 cloud appears as an incomplete shell on the whole and consists of southern spherical and northern flat components, which are associated with G10.2-0.3 and G10.3-0.1, respectively. We detect two large and massive CS-emittin…
There is considerable controversy surrounding the nature of M1-78, a compact nebula located beyond the Perseus arm. It was first classified as a planetary nebula and is nowadays generally considered to be a compact HII region. To investigate the nature M1-78 further, we present a detailed spectroscopic study of M1-78 in the optical and near-infrared. M1-78 is a high-density nebula with substantial physical differences between its two main morphological zones: a bright arc to the SW and a blob of emission in the NE. Specifically, the blob in the NE has a higher electron temperature and visual e…
We present HHT observations in the N=3-2 rotational transition of the CN radical toward selected positions of the Trapezium region and of the molecular Ridge in the Orion molecular cloud. Two of the positions in the Ridge were also observed in the N=2-1 line of CN and 13CN. The N=3-2 CN lines have been combined with observations of the N=2-1 and N=1-0 transitions of CN, and of the N=2-1 of 13CN to estimate the physical conditions and CN abundances in the molecular gas. We analyze in detail the excitation of the CN lines and find that the hyperfine ratios of the N=3-2 line are always close to t…
We have used a multiwavelength data set from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) to study the Galactic HII region KR 140, both on the scale of the nebula itself and in the context of the star forming activity in the nearby W3/W4/W5 complex of molecular clouds and HII regions. From both radio and infrared data we have found a covering factor of about 0.5 for KR 140 and we interpret the nebula as a bowl-shaped region viewed close to face on. Extinction measurements place the region on the near side of its parent molecular cloud. The nebula is kept ionized by one O8.5 V(e) star, VES 735, wh…
