We use 2MASS and MSX infrared observations, along with new molecular line (CO) observations, to examine the distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the molecular cloud surrounding the halo HII region KR 140 in order to determine if the ongoing star-formation activity in this region is dominated by sequential star formation within the photodissociation region (PDR) surrounding the HII region. We find that KR 140 has an extensive population of YSOs that have spontaneously formed due to processes not related to the expansion of the HII region. Much of the YSO population in the molecular cloud is concentrated along a dense filamentary molecular structure, traced by C18O, that has not been erased by the formation of the exciting O star. Some of the previously observed submillimetre clumps surrounding the HII region are shown to be sites of recent intermediate and low-mass star formation while other massive starless clumps clearly associated with the PDR may be the next sites of sequential star formation.
We present a study of the mid-infrared properties and dust content of a sample of 27 HII ``blobs'', a rare class of compact HII regions in the Magellanic Clouds. A unique feature of this sample is that even though these HII regions are of high and low excitation they have nearly the same physical sizes ~1.5-3 pc. We base our analysis on archival 3-8 microns infrared imagery obtained with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We find that despite their youth, sub-solar metallicity and varied degrees of excitation, the mid-infrared colors of these regions are sim…
This review discussed near- and mid- infrared observations of ultracompact (UC) HII regions. The importance of ISO mid-IR fine-structure nebular lines is emphasised since only a small fraction of UCHII regions are observed directly in the near-IR. The reliability of contemporary atmospheric models for such indirect diagnostics is discussed, whilst a revised Spectral Type-Temperature calibration is presented for Galactic O3 to B3 dwarfs. In particular, fine-structure line derived properties of G29.96-0.02 differ from the direct near-IR spectroscopic result and represents a serious discrepancy w…
Extensive photoionization model grids for single star HII regions using a variety of recent state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models have been computed with the main aim of constraining/testing their predicted ionizing spectra against recent ISO mid-IR observations of Galactic HII regions, which probe the ionizing spectra between ~ 24 and 41 eV thanks to Ne, Ar, and S fine structure lines. Particular care has been paid to examining in detail the dependences of the nebular properties on the numerous nebular parameters (mean ionization parameter U, abundances, dust etc.) which are generally un…
We have used a multiwavelength data set from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) to study the Galactic HII region KR 140, both on the scale of the nebula itself and in the context of the star forming activity in the nearby W3/W4/W5 complex of molecular clouds and HII regions. From both radio and infrared data we have found a covering factor of about 0.5 for KR 140 and we interpret the nebula as a bowl-shaped region viewed close to face on. Extinction measurements place the region on the near side of its parent molecular cloud. The nebula is kept ionized by one O8.5 V(e) star, VES 735, wh…
We present data from mid-infrared Keck Telescope imaging of 18 radio-selected ultra-compact HII region candidates at diffraction-limited resolution. The goal of these observations is to determine the sizes, luminosities, and morphologies of the mid-infrared emitting dust surrounding the stellar sources. All 18 sources were imaged at 11.7um and at 17.65um, and 10 of them were imaged also at 24.5um. All the sources were resolved. We have generated dust temperature and optical depth maps and combine them with radial velocity measurements and radio data (1.4 and 5 GHz) to constrain the properties …
We present mid-IR 21micron images of a sample of radio selected Ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions, obtained with the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX). All, with one possible exception, are detected at mid-IR wavelengths, sampling the warm dust emission of the cocoons of the OB star central exciting sources. Many of the UCHII regions have nearby (up to a few pc distant) companion dust emission sources, which represent other potential star birth sites. In some objects the companion dominates the IRAS point source catalogue entry for the UCHII region. We compare the mid- and far-IR dust emission, …
To show the importance of high-spatial resolution observations of HII regions when compared with observations obtained with larger apertures such as ISO, we present mid-infrared spectra of two Magellanic Cloud HII regions, N88A and N160A. We obtained mid-infrared (8-13 um), long-slit spectra with TIMMI2 on the ESO 3.6m telescope. These are combined with archival spectra obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, and are compared with the low-spatial resolution ISO-SWS data. An inventory of the spectra in terms of atomic fine-structure lines and molecular…
We present diffraction-limited (FWHM ~ 0.3arcsec) Gemini/T-ReCS mid-infrared (MIR: N-band or narrow-band at 8.7micron) imaging of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) drawn from a representative local sample. The MIR emission in the central few kpc is strikingly similar to that traced by Pa-alpha, and generally consists of bright nuclear emission and several compact circumnuclear and/or extranuclear HII regions. The central MIR emission is dominated by these powerful HII regions, consistent with the majority of AGN in this local sample of LIRGs contributing a minor part of the MIR emission.…
We conduct a Galactic census of Giant HII regions, based on the all sky 6cm dataset of Kuchar & Clark, plus the kinematic distances obtained by Russeil. From an inspection of mid-IR Mid-course Space Experiment (MSX) and far-IR IRAS Sky Survey Atlas images we identify a total of 56 GHII regions in the Milky Way, of which 15% (65%) can be seen at optical (near-IR) wavelengths. The mid to far-IR fluxes from each GH {\sc ii} region are measured, and sample the thermal emission from the ubiquitous dust present within the exciting clusters of OB stars, arising from the integrated luminosity of the ho…
In this paper we use the complementary imaging capabilities of Spitzer (sensitivity) and Gemini-South/T-ReCS (spatial resolution) to study the mid-IR properties of local (d < 75Mpc) LIRGs. The T-ReCS 8-10micron imaging observations of LIRGs have allowed us to spatially resolve the nuclear emission (star formation and/or AGN) and that of HII regions in the central 3-7kpc regions of LIRGs. From the comparison of the 8micron/Pa-alpha ratios of the integrated vs. resolved HII regions of LIRGs, we infer the existence of an 8micron diffuse component, not directly related to the ionizing stars, that …
We present mid-infrared ISO-SWS observations of the fine-structure emissions lines [NeII]12.8, [NeIII]15.6, [NeIII]36, [ArII]6.9, [ArIII]8.9, [SIII]18.7, [SIII]33.5, [SIV]10.5, and the recombination lines Br_alpha and Br_beta, in a sample of 112 Galactic HII regions and 37 nearby extra-galactic HII regions in the LMC, SMC, and M33. The Galactic sources have a wide range in galactocentric distance (0<R<18kpc), which enables us to study excitation and metallicity variations over large Galactic scales. We detect a steep rise in the [NeIII]15.6/[NeII]12.8,[ArIII]8.9/[ArII]6.9, and [SIV]10.5/[SIII]…
We investigate the diffuse absolute calibration of the InfraRed Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope at 8.0microns using a sample of 43 HII regions with a wide range of morphologies near GLON=312deg. For each region we carefully measure sky-subtracted,point-source- subtracted, areally-integrated IRAC 8.0-micron fluxes and compare these with Midcourse Space eXperiment (MSX) 8.3-micron images at two different spatial resolutions, and with radio continuum maps. We determine an accurate median ratio of IRAC 8.0-micron/MSX\8.3-micron fluxes, of 1.55+/-0.15. From robust spectral energy distri…
Ultracompact HII regions are signposts of massive star formation and their properties provide diagnostics for the characteristics of very young O stars embedded in molecular clouds. While radio observations have given us a good picture of the morphology of these regions, they have not provided clear information about the kinematics. Using high spectral resolution observations of the 12.8 micron [NeII] line, it has been possible for the first time to trace the internal kinematics of several ultracompact HII regions. We find that the motions in the cometary ultracompact HII regions MonR2 and G29…
[Abridged] We present the analysis of ISOCAM-CVF and NIR photometry data of the HII region complex N4 in LMC. The aim is twofold: 1) to study the connection between the ISM and the star content of this region; 2)to investigate the effects of the lower than galactic metallicity on dust properties. A dust features -- gas lines -- continuum fitting technique on the data, allows the production of images in each single emission and the detailed analysis of dust, and ionized gas. The NIR photometry provides, for the first time, information on the stellar content of N4. The images in single dust feat…
We made model fitting to the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for different categories of galaxies in the main extragalactic field of the {\it Spitzer} First Look Survey with the aid of spectroscopic information from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the mid-to-far infrared SEDs of HII galaxies, mixture type galaxies and LINERs can be well fitted by the one-parameter ($α$) dust model of Dale et al. plus the 13 Gyr dust-free elliptical galaxy model. The statistics of $α$ values indicates that all these galaxies tend to be quiescent, although the HII galaxies are…
Aims: We searched for the molecular outflows from fifteen molecular clouds associated with ultra-compact and compact HII (UCHII/HII) regions and discussed possible gas heating mechanism. Methods: Mapping observations of CO $J=3-2$ and $J=2-1$ lines were carried out with the KOSMA 3m-Telescope towards the 15 HII regions/molecular cloud complexes. Results: Ten molecular outflows were identified out of the fifteen HII region/molecular cloud complexes. The higher outflow detection rate (67%) suggested that such outflows are as common in high mass star forming regions as those in low mass star form…
We present new mid-infrared (MIR) diagnostics to distinguish emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from that originating in starburst regions. Our method uses empirical spectroscopic criteria based on the fact that MIR emission from star forming or active galaxies arises mostly from HII regions, photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) and AGNs. The analysis of the strength of the 6.2micron Unidentified Infrared Band (UIB) and the MIR continuum shows that UIBs are very faint or absent in regions harboring the intense and hard radiation fields of AGNs and pure HII regions, where the UIB carriers co…
The determination of chemical abundances in ionized gas nebulae is based on the detection of auroral emission lines, from which it is possible to deduce the line temperatures of several ions. These lines are weak in low excitation objects, so its measurement is only possible in great aperture telescopes. The GTC would allow to plan a comprehenssive study of chemical abundances in such objects from mid-high resolution spectra, what would give more accurate observational restrictions to models of chemical evolution.
A study of 12 ultracompact HII regions was conducted to probe the physical conditions and kinematics in the inner envelopes of the molecular clumps harboring them. The APEX telescope was used to observe the sources in the CO (4-3) and 13CO (8-7) lines. Line intensities were modeled with the RATRAN radiative transfer code using power laws for the density and temperature to describe the physical structure of the clumps. All sources were detected in both lines. The optically thick CO (4-3) line shows predominantly blue skewed profiles reminiscent of infall. Line intensities can be reproduced well…
We present T-ReCS high spatial resolution N-band (8-13 micron) spectroscopy of the central regions (a few kpc) of 3 local LIRGs. The nuclear spectra show deep 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature and the high ionization [SIV]10.5 micron emission line, consistent with their optical classification as AGN. The two LIRGs with unresolved mid-IR emission do not show PAH emission at 11.3 micron in their nuclear spectra. The spatially resolved mid-IR spectroscopy of NGC 5135 allows us to separate out the spectra of the Seyfert nucleus, an HII region, and the diffuse region between them on scales of …
We present complete, low resolution IJHK spectroscopy of the ultracompact HII region, G45.12+0.13. From the observed HI line strengths, we derive a near infrared extinction law that is slightly steeper than the average. After correction with this extinction law, we find good agreement between the observed line ratios of HeI, Fe+, Fe++, S+ and S++ and the available atomic data. Our data show that the density within the core of G45.12+0.13 must be at least 10^4/cm^3. This is consistent with the known radio structure of the HII region and in considerable disagreement with previous work using mid …
The near infrared (1-2um) and the thermal infrared (3-25um) trace many of the environments in which masers are thought to reside, including shocks, outflows, accretion disks, and the dense medium near protostars. After a number of recent surveys it has been found that there is a higher detection rate of mid-IR emission towards masers than cm radio continuum emission from UC HII regions, and that the mid-IR emission is actually more closely cospatial to the maser locations. A high percentage of water and methanol masers that are not coincident with the UC HII regions in massive star forming reg…
We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 $μ$m) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band luminosity) correlates better with the far-IR luminosity than with more direct tracers of the young stellar population such as the H$α$ and the UV luminosity. The comparison of resolved images reveals a rem…
Extensive photoionization model grids are computed for single star HII regions using stellar atmosphere models from the WM-basic code. Mid-IR emission line intensities are predicted and diagnostic diagrams of [NeIII]/[NeII] and [SIV]/[SIII] excitation ratio are build, taking into account the metallicities of both the star and the HII region. The diagrams are used in conjunction with galactic HII region observations obtained with the ISO Observatory to determine the effective temperature Teff of the exciting O stars and the mean ionization parameter U. Teff and U are found to increase and decre…
Young massive stars or clusters are often observed at the peripheries of HII regions. What triggers star formation at such locations? Among the scenarios that have been proposed, the `collect and collapse' process is particularly attractive because it permits the formation of massive objects via the fragmentation of the dense shocked layer of neutral gas surrounding the expanding ionized zone. However, until our recent article on Sh 104, it had not been convincingly demonstrated that this process actually takes place. In the present paper we present our selection of seventeen candidate regions…
We present infrared imaging and spectroscopic data of the complex massive star-forming region G10.47+0.03. The detection of seven mid-infrared (MIR) sources in our field combined with a sensitive Ks/ISAAC image allows to establish a very accurate astrometry, at the level of 0.3". Two MIR sources are found to be coincident with two ultracompact HII regions (UCHIIs) within our astrometric accuracy. Another MIR source lies very close to three other UCHII regions and to the hot molecular core (HMC) in G10.47+0.03. Spectroscopy of two of the most interesting MIR sources allows to identify the locat…
The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays over the coming decade is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral IGM will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. We find that an instrument like the planned Mileura Widefield Array Low-Frequency Demonstrator (LFD) will be able to obtain good signal to noise on HII regions around the most luminous quasars, and determine some gross geometric properties, e.g. whether the HII region is spherical or coni…
We present a study of the LMC compact HII region N11A using Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations which resolve N11A and reveal its unknown nebular and stellar features. The presence of a sharp ionization front extending over more than 4'' (1 pc) and fine structure filaments as well as larger loops indicate an environment typical of massive star formation regions, in agreement with high [OIII]/Hb line ratios. N11A is a young region, as deduced from its morphology, reddening, and especially high local concentration of dust, as indicated by the Balmer decrement map. Our observations also r…
We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO …
We are engaged in a multi-wavelength study of several Galactic HII regions that exhibit signposts of triggered star formation on their borders, and where the collect and collapse process could be at work. When addressing the question of triggered star formation it is critically important to ensure the real association between the ionized gas and the neutral material observed nearby. In this paper we stress this point, and present CO observations of the RCW 82 star forming region. The velocity distribution of the molecular gas is combined with the study of young stellar objects (YSOs) detected …
In recent years, a number of extragalactic massive star clusters that are still deeply embedded in their birth material have been discovered. These objects represent the youngest stage of massive star cluster evolution yet observed, and the most massive and dense of these may be proto globular clusters. Their properties appear to be similar to those of ultracompact HII regions in the Galaxy, but scaled up in total mass and luminosity. In many cases, these clusters are only visible at mid-IR to radio wavelengths, and they have typically been detected as ``inverted'' spectrum radio sources. Howe…
The Spitzer Space Telescope is pushing into new frontiers in high redshift astronomy. Closer to home, Spitzer is making an equally large impact on our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. In this contribution we present mid-infrared diagnostics based largely on data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming pro…
Studies of interstellar dust using the recently completed Mid-Infrared Galaxy Atlas (MIGA) and the soon to be launched Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE) satellite are summarized. Projects include looking at the distribution of dust around HII regions, the study of dust at the interfaces of HII regions and molecular clouds, and understanding the colour variations seen in cirrus clouds.
We present SEST-SIMBA 1.2-mm continuum maps and ESO-NTT SOFI JHK images of the Galactic HII region RCW 79. The millimetre continuum data reveal the presence of massive fragments located in a dust emission ring surrounding the ionized gas. The two most massive fragments are diametrically opposite each other in the ring. The near-IR data, centred on the compact HII region located at the south-eastern border of RCW 79, show the presence of an IR-bright cluster containing massive stars along with young stellar objects with near-IR excesses. A bright near- and mid-IR source is detected towards mase…
We present an analysis of wind-blown, parsec-sized, mid-infrared bubbles and associated star-formation using GLIMPSE/IRAC, MIPSGAL/MIPS and MAGPIS/VLA surveys. Three bubbles from the Churchwell et al. (2006) catalog were selected. The relative distribution of the ionized gas (based on 20 cm emission), PAH emission (based on 8 um, 5.8 um and lack of 4.5 um emission) and hot dust (24 um emission) are compared. At the center of each bubble there is a region containing ionized gas and hot dust, surrounded by PAHs. We identify the likely source(s) of the stellar wind and ionizing flux producing eac…
To investigate the process of star formation triggered by the expansion of an HII region, we present a multi-wavelength analysis of the Galactic HII region RCW 120 and its surroundings. The collect and collapse model predicts that the layer of gas and dust accumulated between the ionization and shock fronts during the expansion of the HII region collapses and forms dense fragments, giving rise to potential sites of massive-star formation. The aim of our study is to look for such massive fragments and massive young stars on the borders of RCW 120. We mapped the RCW 120 region in the cold dust c…
We measure reddenings to HII regions in NGC 2903, NGC 1512, M51, NGC 4449 and NGC 6946 from Hubble Space Telescope Pa alpha and H alpha images. Extinctions range from A_V ~ 5 - 0 depending upon the galaxy. For the galaxies with HST images in both lines, NGC 2903, NGC 1512 and M51, the Pa alpha and H alpha emission are almost identical in morphology which implies that little emission from bright HII regions is hidden from view by regions of comparatively high extinction. The scatter in the measured extinctions is only +- 0.5 mag. We compare the reddenings we measure in five galaxies using the P…
It has been shown that the diversity of the aromatic emission features can be rationalized into different classes of objects, in which differences between circumstellar and interstellar matter are emphasised. We probe the links between the mid-IR emitters observed in planetary nebulae (PNe) and their counterparts in the interstellar medium in order to probe a scenario in which the latter have been formed in the circumstellar environment of evolved stars. The mid-IR (6-14 um) emission spectra of PNe and compact HII regions were analysed on the basis of previous work on photodissociation regions…
The Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph was used to probe a variety of environments in nine nearby galaxies that span a range of morphological types, luminosities, metallicities, and infrared-to-blue ratios. For the first time, near-infrared spectroscopy was obtained for nuclear or bright HII regions in star-forming galaxies over two spatial dimensions (5.7"x10.0") in the [FeII] (1.257um), [FeII] (1.644um), Paschen beta (1.282um), H2 (2.122um), and Brackett gamma (2.166um) transition lines. These data yield constraints on various characteristics of the star-forming episodes in these regions, i…
We present results of our diffraction-limited mid-infrared imaging of the massive star-forming region W3(OH) with SpectroCam-10 on the 5-m Hale telescope at wavelengths of 8.8, 11.7, and 17.9 micron. The thermal emission from heated dust grains associated with the ultracompact HII region W3(OH) is resolved and has a spatial extent of ~2 arcsec in the N band. We did not detect the hot core source W3(H_2O) which implies the presence of at least 12 mag of extinction at 11.7 micron towards this source. These results together with other data were used to constrain the properties of W3(OH) and W3(H_…
We have observed the central region of the IR-dark cloud filament associated with IRAS 18507+0121 at millimeter wavelengths in CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), and C18O(1-0) line emission and with the Spitzer Space Telescope at mid-IR wavelengths. Five massive outflows from two cloud cores were discovered. Three outflows are centered on or near an Ultracompact HII region (G34.4+0.23) while the remaining two outflows originate from the millimeter core G34.4+0.23 MM. Modeling of the SEDs of the mid-IR sources identified 31 young stellar objects in the filament with a combined stellar mass of ~127 +/- 27 Msun…
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the region NGC 2467, and use these observations to determine how the environment of an HII region affects the process of star formation. Our observations comprise IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) maps of the region, covering approximately 400 square arcminutes. The images show a region of ionized gas pushing out into the surrounding molecular cloud, powered by an O6V star and two clusters of massive stars in the region. We have identified as candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) 45 sources in NGC 2467 with infrared excess…
Mid-infrared diagnostics are presented for a large portion of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample plus archival data from the Infrared Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming progress made with ISO spectroscopy on starbursting and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The sensitivity of Spitzer allows us to pr…
We present the observational results of Galactic HII region S294, using optical photometry, narrow-band imaging and radio continuum mapping at 1280 MHz, together with archival data from 2MASS, MSX and IRAS surveys. The stellar surface density profile indicates that the radius of the cluster associated with the S294 region is ~ 2.3 arcmin. We found an anomalous reddening law for the dust inside the cluster region and the ratio of total-to-selective extinction is found to be 3.8+-0.1. We estimate the minimum reddening E (B-V) = 1.35 mag and distance of 4.8+-0.2 kpc to the region from optical CC …
Our mid-infrared and near-infrared surveys over the last five years have helped to strengthen and clarify the relationships between water, methanol, and OH masers and the star formation process. Our surveys show that maser emission seems to be more closely associated with mid-infrared emission than cm radio continuum emission from UC HII regions. We find that masers of all molecular species surveyed trace a wide variety of phenomena and show a proclivity for linear distributions. The vast majority of these linear distributions can be explained by outflows or shocks, and in general do not appea…
We report subarcsecond-resolution VLA and Keck mid-infrared imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy II Zw 40. II Zw 40 contains a bright, compact thermal radio and infrared source with all the characteristics of a collection of dense HII regions ionized by at least 14,000 O stars. The supernebula is revealed to be multiple sources within an envelope of weaker emission. The radio emission is dominated by free-free emission at 2cm, and the spectrum of this emission appears to be rising. This suggests that the free-free emission is optically thick at 2cm, and that the individual HII regions are ~1p…
We investigate the chemical abundances of NGC3603 in the Milky Way, of 30Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and of N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Mid-infrared observations with the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope allow us to probe the properties of distinct physical regions within each object: the central ionizing cluster, the surrounding ionized gas, photodissociation regions, and buried stellar clusters. We detect [SIII], [SIV], [ArIII], [NeII], [NeIII], [FeII], and [FeIII] lines and derive the ionic abundances. Based on the ionic abundance ratio (NeIII/H)/(…
We present Spitzer-IRAC, NOAO 2.1meter-Flamingos, Keck-NIRC, and FCRAO-SEQUOIA observations of the massive star forming complex S254-S258, covering an area of 25x20 arc-minutes. Using a combination of the IRAC and NIR data, we identify and classify the young stellar objects (YSO) in the complex. We detect 510 sources with near or mid IR-excess, and we classify 87 Class I, and 165 Class II sources. The YSO are found in clusters surrounded by isolated YSO in a low-density distributed population. The ratio of clustered to total YSO is 0.8. We identify six new clusters in the complex. One of them,…
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) millimeter array was used to make observations of the CS(2-1) line (at 97.981 GHz) arising from the G0.07+0.04 region of the ``-30 km/s'' molecular cloud near the Galactic center with a spatial resolution of ~8". The ionized edges of this cloud forms the Arched Filament HII regions which are ionized by the adjacent Arches stellar cluster. The OVRO data were combined with single-dish data obtained at the 30-m IRAM telescope by Serabyn & Guesten (1987). A comparison of this CS(2-1) data and the H92alpha recombination line data of Lang, Goss & Morris (200…
New observations at high latitudes above the HII region W4 show that the structure formerly identified as a chimney candidate, an opening to the Galactic halo, is instead a superbubble in the process of fragmenting and possibly evolving into a chimney. Data at high Galactic latitudes (b > 5 degrees) above the W3/W4 star forming region at 1420 and 408 MHz Stokes I (total power) and 1420 MHz Stokes Q and U (linear polarization) reveal an egg-shaped structure with morphological correlations between our data and the H-alpha data of Dennison, Topasna, & Simonetti. Polarized intensity images show de…
We present observations and models of the behaviour of the HI and HeI lines between 1.6 and 2.2um in a small sample of compact HII regions. As in our previous papers on planetary nebulae, we find that the `pure' 1.7007um 4^3D-3^3P and 2.16475um 7^(3,1)G-4^(3,1)F HeI recombination lines behave approximately as expected as the effective temperature of the central exciting star(s) increases. However, the 2.058um 2^1P-2^1S HeI line does not behave as the model predicts, or as seen in planetary nebulae. Both models and planetary nebulae showed a decrease in the HeI 2^1P-2^1S/HI Br gamma ratio above…
Combining the relative vicinity of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 with the Spitzer images, we investigate the properties of infrared (IR) emission sites and assess the reliability of the IR emission as a star formation tracer. The mid- and far-IR emission of M33 was obtained from IRAC and MIPS images from the Spitzer archive. We compared the photometric results for several samples of three known types of discrete sources (HII regions, supernovae remnants and planetary nebulae) with theoretical diagnostic diagrams, and derived the spectral energy distribution (from 3.6 to 24 micron) of each …
We present here a mid-infrared imaging survey of 26 sites of water maser emission. Observations were obtained at the InfraRed Telescope Facility 3-m telescope with the University of Florida mid-infrared imager/spectrometer OSCIR, and the JPL mid-infrared camera MIRLIN. The main purpose of the survey was to explore the relationship between water masers and the massive star formation process. It is generally believed that water masers predominantly trace outflows and embedded massive stellar objects, but may also exist in circumstellar disks around young stars. We investigate each of these possi…
In this letter we present ground-based subarcsecond mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of young super star clusters in the overlap region of the merging galaxies NGC4038/4039 (the Antennae) obtained with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid-Infrared (VISIR). With its unprecedented spatial resolution VISIR begins to resolve the HII/PDR complexes around the star-forming regions for the first time. In the N-band spectra of two young star clusters unexpectedly low polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is observed, compared to what is seen with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) an…
We utilize a new VLA Galactic plane catalog at 1.4 GHz covering the first and second Galactic quadrants (340 deg <l< 120 deg, |b|<0.8 deg with |b|< 1.8 deg for 350 deg <l< 40 deg and |b|<2.5 deg for 100 deg <l<105 deg) in conjunction with the MSX6C Galactic plane mid-infrared catalog to supplement and better understand our 5 GHz catalog (Giveon et al. 2005). A radio catalog of this region was first published by Zoonematkermani et al. (1990), but we have re-reduced the data with significantly improved calibration and mosaicing procedures, resulting in more than a tripling of the number of 1.4 G…
We present a detailed comparison of the ionizing spectral energy distributions (SEDs) predicted by four modern stellar atmosphere codes, TLUSTY, CMFGEN, WMbasic, and FASTWIND. We consider three sets of stellar parameters representing a late O-type dwarf (O9.5 V), a mid O-type (O7 V) dwarf, and an early O-type dwarf (O5.5 V). We explore two different possibilities for such a comparison, following what we called evolutionary and observational approaches: in the evolutionary approach one compares the SEDs of stars defined by the same values of Teff and logg; in the observational approach the mode…
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications - starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) - with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classification is excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion t…
G339.88-1.26 is considered to be a good candidate for a massive star with a circumstellar disk. This has been supported by the observations of linearly distributed methanol maser spots believed to delineate this disk, and mid-infrared observations that have discovered a source at this location that is elongated at the same position angle as the methanol maser distribution. We used the mid-infrared imager/spectrometer OSCIR at Keck to make high-resolution images of G339.88-1.26. We resolve the mid-infrared emission into 3 sources within 1.5 arcsec of the location of the masers. We determine tha…
The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is a multi-wavelength programme of follow-up observations designed to distinguish between genuine massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and other embedded or dusty objects, such as ultra compact (UC) HII regions, evolved stars and planetary nebulae (PNe), from a sample of ~2000 MYSOs candidates. These were identified by comparing the colours of objects from the MSX and 2MASS point source catalogues to those of known MYSOs, in order to develop colour selection criteria which have been used to produced the RMS sample of MYSOs candidates. Our ultimate aim is to pro…
We present a mid-infrared study of NGC 3576. The high-resolution images were taken at the Gemini South Observatory through narrow and broad band filters centered between 7.9 micron and 18 micron. The nearly diffraction limited images show IRS 1 resolved into 4 sources for the first time in the 10 micron band. The positions of the sources are coincident with massive young stellar objects detected previously in the near infrared. The properties of each object, such as spectral energy distribution, silicate absorption feature, color temperature and luminosities were obtained and are discussed. We…
