We are engaged in a multi-wavelength study of several Galactic HII regions that exhibit signposts of triggered star formation on their borders, and where the collect and collapse process could be at work. When addressing the question of triggered star formation it is critically important to ensure the real association between the ionized gas and the neutral material observed nearby. In this paper we stress this point, and present CO observations of the RCW 82 star forming region. The velocity distribution of the molecular gas is combined with the study of young stellar objects (YSOs) detected in the direction of RCW 82. We discuss the YSO's evolutionary status using near- and mid-IR data. The spatial and velocity distributions of the molecular gas are used to discuss the possible scenarios for the star formation around RCW 82.
We present SEST-SIMBA 1.2-mm continuum maps and ESO-NTT SOFI JHK images of the Galactic HII region RCW 79. The millimetre continuum data reveal the presence of massive fragments located in a dust emission ring surrounding the ionized gas. The two most massive fragments are diametrically opposite each other in the ring. The near-IR data, centred on the compact HII region located at the south-eastern border of RCW 79, show the presence of an IR-bright cluster containing massive stars along with young stellar objects with near-IR excesses. A bright near- and mid-IR source is detected towards mase…
To investigate the process of star formation triggered by the expansion of an HII region, we present a multi-wavelength analysis of the Galactic HII region RCW 120 and its surroundings. The collect and collapse model predicts that the layer of gas and dust accumulated between the ionization and shock fronts during the expansion of the HII region collapses and forms dense fragments, giving rise to potential sites of massive-star formation. The aim of our study is to look for such massive fragments and massive young stars on the borders of RCW 120. We mapped the RCW 120 region in the cold dust c…
We present evidence for anomalous microwave emission in the RCW175 \hii region. Motivated by 33 GHz $13\arcmin$ resolution data from the Very Small Array (VSA), we observed RCW175 at 31 GHz with the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) at a resolution of $4\arcmin$. The region consists of two distinct components, G29.0-0.6 and G29.1-0.7, which are detected at high signal-to-noise ratio. The integrated flux density is $5.97\pm0.30$ Jy at 31 GHz, in good agreement with the VSA. The 31 GHz flux density is $3.28\pm0.38$ Jy ($8.6σ$) above the expected value from optically thin free-free emission based on…
We report NIR broad and narrow band photometric observations in the direction of the IRAS17149-3916 source that reveal the presence of a young cluster of massive stars embedded in an HII region coincident with RCW121. These observations, together with published radio data, MSX and Spitzer images were used to determine some of the physical parameters of the region. We found 96 cluster member candidates in an area of about 1.5 x 2.0 square arcmin, 30% of them showing excess emission in the NIR. IRS 1, the strongest source in the cluster with an estimated spectral type of O5V-O6V ZAMS based on th…
We present millimetre-line imaging of the Galactic HII region Sh 104. We show that it is surrounded by a ring of molecular gas and dust. Four large molecular condensations are regularly spaced around the ring. These condensations are themselves fragmented and contain several massive dense cores. A deeply embedded cluster is observed in the near IR towards the largest condensation. It contains at least one massive star ionizing an ultra-compact HII region. The Sh 104 region is a good illustration of the `collect and collapse' model for star formation triggered by the expansion of an HII region.
We present a fully sampled C^{18}O (1-0) map towards the southern giant molecular cloud (GMC) associated with the HII region RCW 106, and use it in combination with previous ^{13}CO (1-0) mapping to estimate the gas column density as a function of position and velocity. We find localized regions of significant ^{13}CO optical depth in the northern part of the cloud, with several of the high-opacity clouds in this region likely associated with a limb-brightened shell around the HII region G333.6-0.2. Optical depth corrections broaden the distribution of column densities in the cloud, yielding a…
Spinning dust appears to be the best explanation for the anomalous emission that has been observed at $\sim 10-60$ GHz. One of the best examples of spinning dust comes from a HII region in the Perseus molecular cloud. Observations of other HII regions also show tentative evidence for excess emission at frequencies $\sim 30$ GHz, although at lower emissivity levels. A new detection of excess emission at 31 GHz in the HII region RCW175 has been made. The most plausible explanation again comes from spinning dust. HII regions are a good place to look for spinning dust as long as accurate radio dat…
Context. Massive-star formation triggered by the expansion of HII regions. Aims. To understand if sequential star formation is taking place at the periphery of the HII region Sh2-219. Methods. We present 12CO(2-1) line observations of this region, obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope (Pico Veleta, Spain). Results. In the optical, Sh2-219 is spherically symmetric around its exciting star; furthermore it is surrounded along three quarters of its periphery by a ring of atomic hydrogen. This spherical symmetry breaks down at infrared and millimetre wavelengths. A molecular cloud of about 2000\msol …
Young massive stars or clusters are often observed at the peripheries of HII regions. What triggers star formation at such locations? Among the scenarios that have been proposed, the `collect and collapse' process is particularly attractive because it permits the formation of massive objects via the fragmentation of the dense shocked layer of neutral gas surrounding the expanding ionized zone. However, until our recent article on Sh 104, it had not been convincingly demonstrated that this process actually takes place. In the present paper we present our selection of seventeen candidate regions…
Aims: We wish to establish whether sequential star formation is taking place at the periphery of the Galactic HII region Sh2-212. Methods: We present CO millimetre observations of this region obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope to investigate the distribution of associated molecular material. We also use deep JHK observations obtained at the CFHT to study the stellar content of the region, and radio observations obtained at the VLA to look for the presence of an ultra-compact (UC) HII region and for maser emission. Results: In the optical, Sh2-212 is spherically symmetric around its central ex…
We have mapped the dust continuum emission from the molecular cloud covering a region of 28pcx94pc associated with the well-known HII region RCW 106 at 1.2 mm using SIMBA on SEST. The observations, having an HPBW of 24" (0.4 pc), reveal 95 clumps. Owing to the higher sensitivity to colder dust and higher angular resolution the present observations identify new emission features and also show that most of the IRAS sources in this region consist of multiple dust emission peaks. The detected millimeter sources (MMS) include on one end the exotic MMS5 (associated with IRAS 16183-4958, one of the b…
We present visible, near IR, and mm-wave observations of RCW 108, a molecular cloud complex in the AraOB1 association that is being eroded by the energetic radiation of two O-type stars in the nearby cluster NGC 6193. The western part of the RCW108 cloud contains an embedded compact HII region, IRAS 16362-4845, ionized by an aggregate of early-type stars. We notice a lack of stars later than A0 in the aggregate and speculate that this might be a consequence of its extreme youth. We examine the distribution of stars displaying IR excesses projected across the molecular cloud. While many of them…
We present the observational results of Galactic HII region S294, using optical photometry, narrow-band imaging and radio continuum mapping at 1280 MHz, together with archival data from 2MASS, MSX and IRAS surveys. The stellar surface density profile indicates that the radius of the cluster associated with the S294 region is ~ 2.3 arcmin. We found an anomalous reddening law for the dust inside the cluster region and the ratio of total-to-selective extinction is found to be 3.8+-0.1. We estimate the minimum reddening E (B-V) = 1.35 mag and distance of 4.8+-0.2 kpc to the region from optical CC …
We present Spitzer-IRAC, NOAO 2.1meter-Flamingos, Keck-NIRC, and FCRAO-SEQUOIA observations of the massive star forming complex S254-S258, covering an area of 25x20 arc-minutes. Using a combination of the IRAC and NIR data, we identify and classify the young stellar objects (YSO) in the complex. We detect 510 sources with near or mid IR-excess, and we classify 87 Class I, and 165 Class II sources. The YSO are found in clusters surrounded by isolated YSO in a low-density distributed population. The ratio of clustered to total YSO is 0.8. We identify six new clusters in the complex. One of them,…
We present Chandra/ACIS images of several high-mass star-forming regions. The massive stellar clusters powering these HII regions are resolved at the arcsecond level into hundreds of stellar sources, similar to those seen in closer young stellar clusters. However, we also detect diffuse X-ray emission on parsec scales that is spatially and spectrally distinct from the point source population. For nearby regions (e.g. M17 and Rosette) the emission is soft, with plasma temperatures less than 10 million degrees, in contrast to what is seen in more distant complexes (e.g. RCW49, W51). This extende…
The Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) is an HI and 1.4-GHz continuum survey of the 4th quadrant of the Galaxy at arcmin resolution. We present here results on linearly polarized continuum emission from an initial 28-square-degree Test Region for the SGPS, consisting of 190 mosaiced pointings of the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and covering the range 325.5 < l < 332.5, -0.5 < b < +3.5. Complicated extended structure is seen in linear polarization throughout the Test Region, almost all of which has no correlation with total intensity. We interpret the brightest regions of polarized emi…
We report Radio Recombination Line (RRL) and continuum observations toward the IRAS point source 16362--4845, embedded within the Bright-Rimmed Cloud (BRC) SFO 79, a small molecular cloud lying at the edge of the HII region RCW 108. High resolution observations of the H92alpha hydrogen recombination line and of the continuum emission (3.6 and 6 cm) confirm the presence of a resolved Ultra Compact (UC) HII region embedded within the molecular cloud. The integrated radio fluxes suggest the source of the ionisation to be an O9 Zero Age Main Sequence (ZAMS) star. Millimetre observations of 12CO, 1…
We present the results of BVRI imaging and optical spectroscopy of the dwarf galaxy A0951+68. The images reveal that, although this galaxy is classified as a dwarf elliptical, it has some properties that are similar to dwarf irregular galaxies. It contains two bright knots of emission, one of which is red and unresolved and the other blue and resolved. The blue knot also shows a high excitation emission line spectrum. The observed line ratios indicate that this is an HII region, although with some line ratios that are border-line with those in AGN. The emission line luminosity is consistent wi…
Based on a multiwavelength study, the ISM around the HII region Sh2-173 has been analyzed. The ionized region is clearly detected in the optical and in the radio continuum images. The analysis of the HI data shows a region of low emissivity that has an excellent morphological correlation with the radio continuum emission. The HII region is partially bordered by a photodissociation region, which, in turn, is encircled by a molecular structure. Taking into account the presence of noncircular motions in the Perseus spiral arm, together with previous distance estimates for the region, we adopt a d…
We have mapped four regions of the southern Galactic plane at 31 GHz with the Cosmic Background Imager. From the maps, we have extracted the flux densities for six of the brightest \hii regions in the southern sky and compared them with multi-frequency data from the literature. The fitted spectral index for each source was found to be close to the theoretical value expected for optically thin free-free emission, thus confirming that the majority of flux at 31 GHz is due to free-free emission from ionised gas with an electron temperature of $\approx 7000-8000$ K. We also found that, for all six…
The Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) is a project to image the HI line emission and 1.4 GHz continuum in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way at high resolution using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes Radio Telescope. In this paper we describe the survey details and goals, present lambda 21-cm continuum data, and discuss HI absorption and emission characteristics of the SGPS Test Region (325.5 deg < l < 333.5 deg; -0.5 deg < b < +3.5 deg). We explore the effects of massive stars on the interstellar medium (ISM) through a study of HI shells and the HI environments…
High resolution imaging with the HST uncovers the so far hidden stellar content and the nebular features of the high excitation compact HII region N83B in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We discover that the HII region is powered by the most recent massive starburst in the OB association LH5 and the burst has created about 20 blue stars spread over ~30" on the sky (7.5 pc). Globally N83B displays a turbulent environment typical of newborn massive star formation sites. It contains an impressive ridge, likely created by a shock and a cavity with an estimated age of only ~30,000 yr, sculpted in…
We investigate spatial the distribution of the intrinsic extinction in the starburst dwarf galaxy NGC1569 creating an extinction map of the whole galaxy derived from the Halpha/Hbeta emission line ratio. We differentiate the extinction in the HII regions from the extinction of the diffuse gas. The intrinsic extinction shows considerable variations over the plane of the galaxy, from negligible extinction up to highest values of A(V)=0.8mag. The extinction map shows small scale clumpy structures possibly due to a clumpy dust distribution. We also identify in this map a shell structure, for which…
Context: The M16 nebula is a relatively nearby Hii region, powered by O stars from the open cluster NGC 6611, which borders to a Giant Molecular Cloud. Radiation from these hot stars has sculpted columns of dense obscuring material on a few arcmin scales. The interface between these pillars and the hot ionised medium provides a textbook example of a Photodissociation Region (PDR). Aims: To constrain the physical conditions of the atomic and molecular material with submillimeter spectroscopic observations. Methods: We used the APEX submillimeter telescope to map a ~3'x3' region in the CO J=3-2,…
The characteristics of ionized and HI gas in the peculiar star/cluster complex in NGC 6946, obtained with the 6-m telescope (BTA) SAO RAS, the Gemini North telescope, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), are presented. The complex is unusual as hosting a super star cluster, the most massive known in an apparently non-interacting giant galaxy. It contains a number of smaller clusters and is bordered by a sharp C-shaped rim. We found that the complex is additionally unusual in having peculiar gas kinematics. The velocity field of the ionized gas reveals a deep oval minimum, ~300 …
We determine and tabulate A(lambda)/A(K), the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction, in the Galactic plane for 1.25um<lambda<8.0um along two lines of sight: l~42 and l~284. The first is a relatively quiescent and unremarkable region; the second contains the giant HII region RCW 49 as well as a ``field'' region unrelated to the cluster and nebulosity. Areas near these Galactic longitudes were imaged at J, H, and K bands by 2MASS and at 3--8um by Spitzer for the GLIMPSE Legacy program. We measure the mean values of the color excess ratios (A(lambda)-A(K))/(A(J)-A(K)) directly from the…
We present initial results of a spectroscopic study of the Pistol and of the cocoon stars in the Quintuplet Cluster. From ISOCAM CVF 5--17 micron spectroscopy of the field of the Pistol Star, we have discovered a nearly spherical shell of hot dust surrounding this star, a probable LBV. This shell is most prominent at lambda > 12 micron, and its morphology clearly indicates that the shell is stellar ejecta. Emission line images show that most of the ionised material is along the northern border of this shell, and its morphology is very similar to that of the Pistol HII region (Yusef-Zadeh & Mor…
We have obtained maps of the 1.25mm thermal dust emission and the molecular gas emission over a region of 20' by 10' arcmin around the Trifid Nebula (M20), with the IRAM 30m and the CSO telescopes as well as in the mid-infrared wavelength with ISO and SPITZER. Our survey is sensitive to features down to N(H2) \sim 10^{22} cm-2 in column density. The cloud material is distributed in fragmented dense gas filaments (n(H2) \sim 1000 cm-3) with sizes ranging from 1 to 10 pc. A massive filament, WF, with properties typical of Infra Red Dark Clouds, connects M20 to the W28 supernova remnant. These fi…
