Magnetic properties of four sigma-phase Fe_(100-x)V_x samples with 34.4<x<55.1 were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements in the temperature interval 5-300 K. Four magnetic quantities viz. hyperfine field, Curie temperature, magnetic moment and susceptibility were determined. The sample containing 34.4 at% V was revealed to exhibit the largest values found up to now for the sigma-phase for average hyperfine field, B = 12.1 T, average magnetic moment per Fe atom, m = 0.89 mB, and Curie temperature, TC = 315.5 K. The quantities were shown to be strongly correlated with each other. In particular, TC is linearly correlated with m with a slope of 406.5 K/mB, as well as B is so correlated with m yielding 14.3 T/mB for the hyperfine coupling constant.
We present self flux growth and characterization of single crystalline AlMn$_2$B$_2$. It is an orthorhombic (space group Cmmm), layered material with a plate like morphology. The anisotropic bulk magnetization data, electrical transport and $^{11}$B nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) data revealed an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at 313 $\pm$ 2 K. In the magnetization data, there is also a broad local maximum significantly above the AFM transition that could be a signature of low dimensional magnetic interactions in AlMn$_2$B$_2$.
The effect of the Fe-Ga ratio on the magnetic and electric properties of the multiferroic Ga2-xFexO3 compound has been studied in order to determine the composition range exhibiting magnetic and electric orders coexistence and their critical temperatures. A magnetoelectric phase diagram, showing the evolution of both the Neel magnetic ordering temperature and the electric ordering temperature, versus the iron content has been established for x values between 0.9 and 1.4. While the ferrimagnetic Neel temperature increases with the iron content, the electric ordering temperature shows an opposit…
Co2MnAl has been predicted to have Weyl points near Fermi level which is expected to give rise to exotic transverse transport properties such as large anomalous Hall(AHE) and Nernst effects(ANE) due to large Berry curvature. In this study, the effect of Fermi level position and atomic ordering on AHE and ANE in Co2MnAl1-xSix were studied systematically. The Co2MnAl film keeps B2-disordred structure regardless of annealing temperature, which results in much smaller anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_xy and transverse Peltier coefficient sigma_xy than those calculated for L21-ordered Co2MnAl. Our…
The discovery of reversible 300 K ferromagnetic ordering in a diluted magnetic semiconductor is reported. Switching of room-temperature ferromagnetism between "on" and "off" states is achieved in Co2+:ZnO by lattice incorporation and removal of the native n-type defect, interstitial Zn. Spectroscopic and magnetic data implicate a double-exchange mechanism for ferromagnetism. These results demonstrate for the first time reversible room-temperature ferromagnetic ordering in a diluted magnetic semiconductor, and present new opportunities for integrating magnetism and conductivity in semiconductor…
This work reports an exchange bias (EB) effect up to room temperature in the binary intermetallic bulk compound Mn3.04Ge0.96. The sample annealed at 700 K crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with ferromagnetic ordering, whereas, the sample annealed at 1073 K crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with antiferromagnetic ordering. The hexagonal Mn3.04Ge0.96 sample exhibits an EB of around 70 mT at 2 K that continues with a non-zero value up to room temperature. The exchange anisotropy is proposed to be originating from the exchange interaction between the triangular antiferromagnetic host and …
Low as well as high-temperature electron and x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on a rare-earth free B-site disordered electron-doped manganite SrMn0.875.Mo0.125O3-δ in the temperature range of 83K to 637K. These studies reveal the occurrence of strong charge ordering (CO) at room temperature in a pseudo tetragonally distorted perovskite phase with space-group Pmmm. Non integral modulation vector of 8.95 times along [-110] indicates a charge density wave type modulation. The CO phase with basic perovskite structure Pmmm transforms to a charge disorder cubic phase through a first o…

We propose empirical formulae of the electrical conductivity sigma and thermal conductivity for elemental metals such as Na, Cu or Fe at room temperature ranges. Assuming the relaxation time is given by the Planck constant divided by pai and further divided by the thermal energy kT for all metals, we propose that sigma is given by the Drude form with the number density of atoms instead of the electron number density, and further divided by a single free integer parameter G. If we adopt that G is the sum of outer electron numbers in electron configuration such as G=1 for Cu(4s^{1}),G=1+2=3 for …
Creating magnetic semiconductors that work at warm circumstance is still a great challenge in the physical sciences. Here, we report the discovery of ferromagnetism in the metal-free perylene diimide semiconductor, whose Curie temperature is higher than 400 Kelvin. A solvothermal approach is used to reduce and dissolve the rigid-backbone perylene diimide crystallites, and radical anion aggregates were fabricated by the subsequent self-assembly and oxidation process. Magnetic measurements exhibit the ferromagnetic ordering with the saturated magnetization of 0.48 $μ_{\rm B}$ per molecule and th…
The coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature is very rarely observed. We have been successful in converting ferroelectric PbTiO3 into a magnetoelectric material by partly substituting Fe at the Ti site. The Pb(Fe1-xTix)O3 system exhibits ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature. Even more remarkably, our results demonstrate a coupling between the two order parameters. Hence it could be a futuristic material to provide cost effective and simple path for designing novel electromagnetic devices.

Nowdays, multiferroic materials with magnetoelectric coupling have many real-world applications in the fields of novel memory devices. It is challenging is to create multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferrimagnetic orderings at room temperature. The single crystal of ferric selenide (Fe3Se4) shows type-II multiferroic due to the coexistence of ferroelectric as well as magnetic ordering at room temperature. We have investigated the lattice instability, electronic structure, ferroelectric, ferrimagnetic ordering and transport properties of ferroelectric metal Fe3Se4. …
We have studied the effect of magnetic field on a non-stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$In$_{15}$ that undergoes a martensitic as well as a magnetic transition near room temperature. Temperature dependent magnetization measurements demonstrate the influence of magnetic field on the structural phase transition temperature. From the study of magnetization as a function of applied field, we show the occurrence of inverse-magnetocaloric effect associated with this magneto-structural transition. The magnetic entropy change attains a value as high as 25 J/kg-K (at 5 T field) at room tem…
Epitaxial thin films of Bi2FeCrO6 have been synthesized by pulsed laser deposition on SrRuO3 on (100)- and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Detailed X-ray diffraction and cross-section transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a double perovskite crystal structure of the Bi2FeCrO6 epitaxial films very similar to that of BiFeO3 along with a particularly noteworthy Fe3+/Cr3+ cation ordering along the [111] direction. The films contain no detectable magnetic iron oxide impurities and have the correct cationic average stoichiometry throughout their thickness. They however exhibit a sligh…
We present direct evidence of above room temperature magneto-electricity in single-phase Li0.05Ti0.02Ni0.93O with above-ambient antiferromagnetic ordering. Temperature-hysteresis in warming/cooling heat-flow thermograms establishes a discontinuous/first-order nature of the cubic-to-rhombohedral structural change concurring the AFM transition. At TN = 488K, magnetization features a sharp slope-&-curvature discontinuity and dielectric constant shows a peak-anomaly. Room temperature P-E loop measures a large polarization traceable to the Nèel domain walls. We find positive room-temperature magnet…
We provide evidence that proton irradiation of energy 2.25 MeV on highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite samples triggers ferro- or ferrimagnetism. Measurements performed with a superconducting quantum interferometer device (SQUID) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) reveal that the magnetic ordering is stable at room temperature.
The energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) at the oxygen $K$ edge in two $AB_2O_4$ spinels (A=Mg, B=Al,Cr) is reported. In $MgAl_2O_4$ the experimental data is successfully modelled within the LDA framework. In the case of $MgCr_2O_4$ spin-polarisation, in the form of antiferromagnetic ordering on the Cr sub-lattice, must be included despite the fact that the measurements were performed at approximately 30 times above $T_N$. A model in which dynamic short-range antiferromagnetic ordering is present at room temperature is proposed to explain the results of the experiments and calculations.
In insulating materials with ordered magnetic spiral phases, ferroelectricity can emerge due to the breaking of inversion symmetry. This property is of both fundamental and practical interest, in particular with a view to exploiting it in low-power electronic devices. Advances towards technological applications have been hindered, however, by the relatively low ordering temperatures $T_\mathrm{spiral}$ of most magnetic spiral phases, which rarely exceed 100 K. We have recently established that the ordering temperature of a magnetic spiral can be increased up to 310 K by the introduction of che…
We have fabricated a variety of "PZT-PFW" (PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3)1-x(PbFe2/3W1/3O3)x [PZTFWx; 0.2 < x < 0.4] single-phase tetragonal ferroelectrics via chemical solution deposition (CSD) [polycrystalline] and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) [epitaxial] onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) and SrTiO3/Si substrates. These exhibit ferroelectricity and (weak) ferromagnetism above room temperature with strain coupling via electrostriction and magnetostriction. Application of modest magnetic field strength ((mu)0H < 1.0 Tesla) destabilizes the long-range ferroelectric ordering and switches the polarization from ca. 22 …
A sigma-Fe54.5Cr45.5 samples irradiated in vacuum with 2 MeV Fe3+ ions at 300, 400, 475 and 700 deg C to the maximum dose of 12.5 dpa were studied with the conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The analysis of the room temperature CEMS spectra revealed an irradiation-induced redistribution of Fe atoms viz. their number on B and D sites decreased while on A, C and E sites increased. The degree of the redistribution was found to be proportional to the number of Fe atoms present on the lattice sites in the non-irradiated samples. The highest degree of the redistribution was revealed …
A low-temperature magnetism was revealed in a series of sigma-Fe(100-x)Mo(x) alloys (x=45-53). Its characterization has been done using vibrating sample magnetometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and ac magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic ordering temperature was determined to lie in the range of 46 K for x=45 and 22K for x=53, and the ground magnetic state was found to be typical of a spin-glass.
Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric and magnetic ordering coexist, are of fundamental interest for the development of multi-state memory devices that allow for electrical writing and non-destructive magnetic read-out operation. The great challenge is to create multiferroic materials that operate at room-temperature and have a large ferroelectric polarization P. Cupric oxide, CuO, is promising because of its large P ~ 10^{2} μC.m^{-2}, but is unfortunately only multiferroic in a temperature range of 20 K, from 210 to 230 K. Here, using a combination of density functional theory and M…
Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric and magnetic ordering coexist, are of fundamental interest for the development of novel memory devices that allow for electrical writing and non-destructive magnetic readout operation. The great challenge is to create room temperature multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) orderings. BiFeO3 has been the most heavily investigated single-phase multiferroic to date due to the coexistence of its magnetic order and ferroelectric order at room temperature. However, there is no net magnetic moment …
The search for macroscopic magnetic ordering phenomena in organic materials, in particular in pure graphite, has been one of the more exciting scientific activities working in the frontiers of physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this Letter we report on a novel chemical route leading to undoubtedly obtain macroscopic quantities of magnetic graphite. This material has a stable and strong ferromagnetic response even at room temperature where it can be attracted by a commercial magnet. We have obtained this magnetic graphite by a vapor reaction consisting of a controlled etching on the …
It is known in the literature that InGaP alloy synthesized within a certain range of growth temperature (520 - 720 degree Centrigrade) shows Cu-Pt crystal ordering. This ordering reduces the band gap energy . It was predicted that the ordering induced modification of energy levels of InGaP lowers its conduction band edge, which could change a type I band alignment at a GaAs/InGaP heterojunction to type II . Here we report the first observation of this ordering related type I/II transition for a GaAs/InGaP heterojunction by C-V profiling experiments done at room temperature .
Results from dielectric and structural measurements on epitaxial SrTiO$_3$/BaZrO$_3$ superlattices reveal properties that cannot be explained simply in terms of those measured on single films of the constituent materials. For large superlattice periodicities (20/20 and 38/38 structures, i.e. samples in which each SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 layer are 20 or 38 unit cells thick, respectively), the capacitance-voltage curves indicate room-temperature ferroelectricity. For smaller periodicities (7/7 and 15/15), anti-ferroelectric-type behavior is observed, suggesting strong coupling between individual polar…
The high efficiency of lead organo-metal-halide perovskite solar cells has raised many questions about the role of the methylammonium (MA) molecules in the Pb-I framework. Experiments indicate that the MA molecules are able to 'freely' spin around at room temperature even though they carry an intrinsic dipole moment. We have performed large supercell (2592 atoms) finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations to study the correlation between the molecules in the framework. An underlying long range anti-ferroelectric ordering of the molecular dipoles is observed. The dynamical cor…
Although spin injection at room temperature in an IrMn metallic antiferromagnet strongly depends on the transport regime, and is more efficient in the case of magnonic transport, in this article, we present experimental data demonstrating that the enhanced efficiency of spin injection caused by spin fluctuations near the ordering temperature can be as efficient for the electronic and magnonic transport regimes. By selecting representative interacting environments, we also demonstrated that the amplification of spin injection near the ordering temperature of the IrMn antiferromagnet is independ…
We report on the vapor-solid growth of single crystalline few-layer MoS2 films on (0001)-oriented sapphire with excellent structural and electrical properties over centimeter length scale. High-resolution X-ray diffraction scans indicated that the films had good out-of-plane ordering and epitaxial registry. A carrier density of ~2 x 1011 cm-2 and a room temperature mobility of 192 cm2/Vs were extracted from space-charge limited transport regime in the films. The electron mobility was found to exhibit in-plane anisotropy with a ratio of ~ 1.8. Theoretical estimates of the temperature-dependent …
We report on the influence of the improved L21 ordering degree on the magnetic properties of Co2MnSi Heusler films. Different fractions of the L21 phase are obtained by different post-growth annealing temperatures ranging from 350 degC to 500 degC. Room temperature magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements reveal an increase of the coercivity at an intermediate annealing temperature of 425 degC, which is a fingerprint of an increased number of pinning centers at this temperature. Furthermore, Brillouin light scattering studies show that the improvement of the L21 order in the Co2MnSi films is c…
The realization of long-range magnetic ordering in two-dimensional (2D) systems can potentially revolutionize next-generation information technology. Here, we report the successful fabrication of crystalline Cr3Te4 monolayers with room temperature ferromagnetism. Using molecular beam epitaxy, the growth of 2D Cr3Te4 films with monolayer thickness is demonstrated at low substrate temperatures (~100C), compatible with Si CMOS technology. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal a Curie temperature (Tc) of ~344 K for the Cr3Te4 monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis, which…
Single-phase multiferroic materials that allow the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic ordering above room temperature are highly desirable, motivating an ongoing search for mechanisms for unconventional ferroelectricity in magnetic oxides. Here, we report an antisite defect mechanism for room temperature ferroelectricity in epitaxial thin films of yttrium orthoferrite, YFeO3, a perovskite-structured canted antiferromagnet. A combination of piezoresponse force microscopy, atomically resolved elemental mapping with aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density…
The existence of long range magnetic order in low dimensional magnetic systems, such as the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets, has attracted intensive studies of new physical phenomena. The vdW Fe$_N$GeTe$_2$ ($N$ = 3, 4, 5; FGT) family is exceptional owing to its vast tunability of magnetic properties. Particularly, a ferromagnetic ordering temperature ($T_{\text{C}}$) above room temperature at $N$ = 5 (F5GT) is observed. Here, our study shows that, by nickel (Ni) substitution of iron (Fe) in F5GT, a record high $T_{\text{C}}$ = 478(6) K is achieved. Importantly, pervasiv…
The coexistence and coupling of magnetic and ferroelectric orderings in single phase multiferroics has evinced enormous scientific interest as it involves breaking of time reversal and space inversion symmetries in the same material. The mutual controllability of the two diverse orderings in multiferroics has potential for developing new generation multifunctional sensor, actuator and data storage devices. We present here evidence for a new exotic facet of multiferroicity, whereby one can raise the strength of antiferromagnetic (AFM) superexchange interaction and hence tune the Néel temperatur…
The properties of epitaxial Bi2FeCrO6 thin films, recently synthesized by pulsed laser deposition, have partially confirmed the theoretical predictions (i.e. a magnetic moment of 2 muB per formula unit and a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The existence of magnetic ordering at room temperature for this material is an unexpected but very promising result that needs to be further investigated. Since magnetism is assumed to arise from the exchange interaction between the Fe and Cr cations, the magnetic behaviour is strongly dependent on both their ordering and the distance between them. We…

The I-Mn-V antiferromagnet, NaMnBi, develops a very large positive magnetoresistance (MR) up to 10,000% at 2 K and 9 T in crystals showing a semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT). In the absence of an SMT, a modest (20%) MR is achieved. Here, we show that upon cooling below the magnetic transition, a spatial modulation appears giving rise to new Bragg peaks due to charge and defect ordering in a checkerboard pattern, with two kinds of modulation vectors, $q_1$=($\frac23$, 0, 1) and $q_2$=($\frac23, \frac13, \frac12$). This constitutes a superlattice transition ($T_s$) that lowers the symmetr…
Bulk magnetic, X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline Tb14Ag51 in the temperature range from 1.5 K to room temperature. Its chemical Gd14Ag51 type structure corresponds to space group P6/m. Combined with group theoretical symmetry analysis, we show that the magnetic structure of this intermetallic compound is of a new k = (1/3,1/3,0) type with three magnetic Tb sublattices ordering simultaneously below TN = 27.5(5) K according to the combined irreducible representations tau4 and tau6. Here we present a general analysis of possible magnetic A ordering for k…
Sodium ion ordering on in situ cleaved NaxCoO2 (x=0.84) surface has been studied by ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-STM) at room temperature. Three main phases, with p(3x3), (root 7 x root 7), and (2 root 3 x 2 root 3) hexagonal unit cells and surface Na concentration of 1/3, 3/7, 1/2, respectively, were identified. One surprising finding is that Na trimers act as the basic building blocks that order in long range. The stability of Na trimers is attributed to the increased Na coordination with oxygen as indicated by ab initio calculations, and possibly at finite temperatur…
Anomalies in the temperature dependences of the recoil-free factor, f, and the average center shift, <CS>, measured by 57-Fe Mossbauer Spectroscopy, were observed for the first time in the archetype of the σ-phase alloys system, Fe-Cr. In both cases the anomaly started at the temperature close to the magnetic ordering temperature, and in both cases it was indicative of lattice vibrations hardening. As no magnetostrictive effects were found, the anomalies seem to be entirely due to a spin-phonon coupling. The observed changes in f and in <CS> were expressed in terms of the underlying changes in…
Fine particles of some of the extensively studied 'enhanced' Pauli paramagnets - LuCo2, ScCo2, ZrCo2 and CeRu2Si2, have been prepared by high-energy ball-milling and investigated for their magnetic behavior. In the case of Co systems, these particles show ferromagnetic features even at room temperature. In the case of CeRu2Si2, a well-known Kondo lattice which is non-magnetic in the bulk form, features attributable to the onset of magnetic order below about 8 K could be seen in the fine particles. The magnitudes of the magnetic moment of these small particles at high fields are sufficiently la…

We report pair distribution function measurements of the iron-based superconductor FeSe above and below the structural transition temperature. Structural analysis reveals a local orthorhombic distortion with a correlation length of about 4 nm at temperatures where an average tetragonal symmetry is observed. The analysis further demonstrates that the local distortion is larger than the distortion at temperatures where the average observed symmetry is orthorhombic. Our results suggest that the low-temperature macroscopic nematic state in FeSe forms from an imperfect ordering of orbital-degenerac…
Heterointerfaces have led to the discovery of novel electronic and magnetic states because of their strongly entangled electronic degrees of freedom. Single-phase chromium compounds always exhibit antiferromagnetism following the prediction of Goodenough-Kanamori rules. So far, exchange coupling between chromium ions via hetero-anions has not been explored and the associated quantum states is unknown. Here we report the successful epitaxial synthesis and characterizations of chromium oxide (Cr2O3)-chromium nitride (CrN) superlattices. Room-temperature ferromagnetic spin ordering is achieved at…
Molybdenum disulphide, a diamagnetic layered dichalcogenide solid, is found to show magnetic ordering at room temperature when exposed to a 2 MeV proton beam. The temperature dependence of magnetization displays ferrimagnetic behavior with a Curie temperature of 895 K. A disorder mode corresponding to a zone-edge phonon and a Mo valence higher than +4, have been detected in the irradiated samples using Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The possible origins of long-range magnetic ordering in irradiated MoS2 samples are discussed.
Ferroelectricity occurs in crystals with broken spatial inversion symmetry. In conventional perovskite oxides, concerted ionic displacements within a three-dimensional network of transition metal-oxygen polyhedra (MOx) manifest spontaneous polarization. Meanwhile, some two-dimensional networks of MOx can foster geometric ferroelectricity with magnetism, owing to the distortion of the polyhedra. Because of the fundamentally different mechanism of ferroelectricity in a two-dimensional network, one can further challenge an uncharted mechanism of ferroelectricity in a one-dimensional channel of MO…
The complex metal oxide Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum related structure and has been prepared both in forms of single crystals by chemical transport reactions and of polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. At room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal structure, space group R3 with a = 8.8679(1) Å, c = 10.6727(2) Å. A long-range magnetically ordered state is identified below 23 K. An u…
Pressure-induced transitions from ordered intermetallic phases to substitutional alloys to semi-ordered phases were studied in a series of bismuth tellurides. Using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, the compounds Bi4Te5, BiTe, and Bi2Te were observed to form alloys with the disordered body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure upon compression to above 14--19 GPa at room temperature. The BiTe and Bi2Te alloys and the previously discovered high-pressure alloys of Bi2Te3 and Bi4Te3 were all found to show atomic ordering after gentle annealing at very moderate temperatures of ~100°C. Upon anne…
