The I-Mn-V antiferromagnet, NaMnBi, develops a very large positive magnetoresistance (MR) up to 10,000% at 2 K and 9 T in crystals showing a semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT). In the absence of an SMT, a modest (20%) MR is achieved. Here, we show that upon cooling below the magnetic transition, a spatial modulation appears giving rise to new Bragg peaks due to charge and defect ordering in a checkerboard pattern, with two kinds of modulation vectors, $q_1$=($\frac23$, 0, 1) and $q_2$=($\frac23, \frac13, \frac12$). This constitutes a superlattice transition ($T_s$) that lowers the symmetry from the high temperature centrosymmetric P4/nmm to the non-centrosymmetric P$\overline4$m2. In crystals with a large MR, a close to room temperature $T_s$ is observed with $q_1$ appearing first, followed by $q_2$. In crystals with low MR however, $T_s$ is much lower and only $q_1$ is observed. The charge modulation and spin fluctuations may both contribute to the enhancement of MR.
The layered topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted great interest recently due to its intrinsic antiferromagnetic order, potentially hosting various topological phases. By temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy over a broad frequency range, we studied the changes in the optical conductivity of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ at the magnetic ordering temperature. The temperature dependence of several optical parameters reveals an anomaly at the magnetic phase transition, which suggests the correlation between the bulk electronic band structure and the magnetism. We relate our findings to recent…
The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ undergoes a metamagnetic transition in a c-axis magnetic field. It has been predicted that ferromagnetic MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ is an ideal Weyl semimetal with a single pair of Weyl nodes. Here we report measurements of quantum oscillations detected in the field-induced ferromagnetic phase of MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{4}$, where Sb substitution tunes the majority carriers from electrons to holes. Single frequency Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations were observed in a wide range of Sb concentrations (0.54 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.21). The …
The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, Te) are promising candidates in realizing various novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Although much progress had been made in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, the study of MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ has been lacking due to the difficulty of material synthesis of the desired trigonal phase. Here, we report the synthesis of multilayer trigonal MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ with alternating-layer molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) identify a…
MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ (MBT) materials are promising antiferromagnetic topological insulators where field driven ferromagnetism is predicted to cause a transition between axion insulator and Weyl semimetallic states. However, the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn/Bi antisite defects and the main Mn layer can reduce the low-field magnetization, and it has been shown that such defects are more prevalent in the structurally identical trivial magnetic insulator MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ (MST). We use high-field magnetization measurements to show that the magnetization of MBT and MST occur in stages a…
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) MnBi2Te4 and MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n are expected to realize the high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and dissipationless electrical transport. Extensive efforts have been made on this field but there is still lack of ideal MTI candidate with magnetic ordering of ferromagnetic (FM) ground state. Here, we demonstrate a MTI sample of Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te7 which holds the coexistence of FM ground state and topological non-triviality. The dramatic modulation of the magnetism is induced by a charge carrier engineering process by the way of S…
Crystal growth of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ has delivered the first experimental corroboration of the 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator state. Our present results confirm that the synthesis of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ can be scaled-up and strengthen it as a promising experimental platform for studies of a crossover between magnetic ordering and non-trivial topology. High-quality single crystals of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ are grown by slow cooling within a narrow range between the melting points of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ (586 °C) and MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ (600 °C). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron m…
The recent discovery of antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has triggered great research efforts on exploring novel magnetic topological physics. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the manipulation of magnetic orientation and order not only significantly affects material symmetries and orbital hybridizations, but also results in variant new magnetic topological phases in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. We thus predict a series of unusual topological quantum phase transitions that are magnetically controllable in the material, including phase transitions from AFM…
The metastable layered compound MnBi2Te4 is the first experimentally realized intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall effect at high temperatures upon exfoliation to atomically thin layers. While its magnetic ordering and topological properties have generated intensive interest, the mechanism behind its metastability and the ideal crystal synthesis conditions have remained elusive. Here, using a combined first-principles-based approach that considers lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, we investigate the metastability of MnBi2Te…
Investigation of magnetic order influenced phonon and electron dynamics in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ and Sb doped MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
We report successful growth of magnetic topological insulator (MTI) MnBi2Te4. The heating schedule basically deals with growth of the crystal from melt at 900C and very slow cooling (1C/hr) to around 600C with 24 hours hold time, followed by cooling to room temperature. Our detailed, PXRD Reitveld analysis showed that the resultant crystal is dominated mainly by MnBi2Te4 and minor phases of Bi2Te3 and MnTe. The transport measurements showed a step like behavior at around 150K followed by cusp like structure in resistivity at around 25K (TP) due reported anti-ferromagnetic ordering of Mn. Both …
The tuning of magnetic phase, chemical potential, and structure is crucial to observe diverse exotic topological quantum states in $MnBi_2Te_4(Bi_2Te_3)_m$ (m = 0, 1, 2, & 3). Here we show a ferromagnetic (FM) phase with a chiral crystal structure in $Mn(Bi_{1-x}Sb_x)_4Te_7$, obtained via tuning the growth conditions and Sb concentration. Unlike previously reported $Mn(Bi_{1-x}Sb_x)_4Te_7$, which exhibits FM transitions only at high Sb doping levels, our samples show FM transitions ($T_C$ = 13.5 K) at 15%-27% doping levels. Furthermore, our single crystal x-ray diffraction structure refinement…
The interplay of magnetism and topology is a key research subject in condensed matter physics and material science, which offers great opportunities to explore emerging new physics, like the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, axion electrodynamics and Majorana fermions. However, these exotic physical effects have rarely been realized in experiment, due to the lacking of suitable working materials. Here we predict that van der Waals layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-family materials show two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in the single layer and three-dimensional (3D) $A$-type antiferromagnetism in the…
MnBi$_4$Te$_{7}$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ are two members with n=2 and 3 in the family of MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$ where the n=1 member, MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$, has been intensively investigated as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. Here we report the A-type antiferromagnetic order in these two compounds by measuring magnetic properties, electrical and thermal transport, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction. Both compounds order into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure as does MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$ with ferromagnetic planes coupled antiferromagnetically along the c…
MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has recently been the subject of intensive study, due to the prediction of axion insulator, Weyl semimetal, and quantum anomalous Hall insulator phases, depending on the structure and magnetic ordering. Experimental results have confirmed some aspects of this picture, but several experiments have seen zero-gap surfaces states at low temperature, in conflict with expectations. In this work, we develop a first-principles-based tight-binding model that allows for arbitrary control of the local spin direction and spin-orbit coupling, enabling us to accurately treat large unit-cells.…
Topological states of quantum matter have attracted great attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. The study of time-reversal-invariant (TRI) topological states in quantum materials has made tremendous progress in both theories and experiments. As a great success, thousands of TRI topological materials are predicted through sweeping search. Richer exotic phenomena are expected to appear in magnetic topological materials because of varied magnetic configurations, but this study falls much behind due to the complex magnetic structures and transitions. Here, we predict the tet…

The recent discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulators in Mn-Bi-Te family with intrinsic magnetic ordering have rapidly drawn broad interest since its cleaved surface state is believed to be gapped, hosting the unprecedented axion states with half-integer quantum Hall effect. Here, however, we show unambiguously by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that a gapless Dirac cone at the (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exists between the bulk band gap. Such unexpected surface state remains unchanged across the bulk Néel temperature, and is even robust against se…
Modification of the gap at the Dirac point (DP) in antiferromagnetic (AFM) axion topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its electronic and spin structure has been studied by angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) under laser excitation with variation of temperature (9-35~K), light polarization and photon energy. We have distinguished both a large (62-67~meV) and a reduced (15-18~meV) gap at the DP in the ARPES dispersions, which remains open above the Néel temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}=24.5$~K). We propose that the gap above $T_\mathrm{N}$ remains open due to short-range ma…
LaAgSb$_{2}$ is a rare material, which offers the opportunity to investigate the complex interplay between charge density wave (CDW) ordering and topology protected electronic band structure. As both of these phenomena are governed by the structural symmetries, a comprehensive study of the lattice dynamics is highly desirable. In this report, we present the results of temperature and pressure dependent Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in single crystalline LaAgSb$_{2}$. Our results confirm that Raman spectroscopy is a highly sensitive tool to probe CDW ordering phenomenon, particularly…
We report first-principles calculations on antiferromagnetic spin ordering in graphene under biaxial strain. Using hybrid functional calculations, we found that semimetallic graphene sheets undergo a transition to antiferromagnetic insulators at a biaxial strain of 7.7% and that the band gap rapidly increases after the onset of this transition before reaching 0.9 eV at a biaxial strain of 12%. We examined the competition of the antiferromagnetic spin ordering with two-dimensional Peierls distortions upon biaxial strain, and found that the preceding antiferromagnetic insulator phase impedes the…
Here we report the evolution of structural, magnetic and transport properties in MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$ (0$\leq x \leq$2) single crystals. MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, isostructural to MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, has the lattice parameters of \textit{a}=4.2445(3)$Å$ and \textit{c}=40.869(5)$Å$, respectively. With increasing Sb content in MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$, the \textit{a}-lattice decreases linearly following the Vegards law while the \textit{c}-lattice shows little compositional dependence. The \textit{a}-lattice contraction occurs by reducing Mn-Te-Mn bond angle while Mn-Te bond length remains nearly constant…
Topological insulators with intrinsic magnetic ordering, potentially hosting rare quantum effects, recently attracted extensive attention. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the first established example. The Sb-doped variant Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ shows a great variety of electronic properties depending on the Sb content~$x$, such as shifts in the Fermi level and the Neel temperature $T_{\mathrm N}$, and the change of the free charge carrier type from $n$- to $p$-type at high Sb substitution ratios. Here, we investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on the bulk electronic structure of Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$S…
Effects of short-range electronic interactions in a three-dimensional line-node semimetal that supports linearly dispersing quasiparticles around an isolated loop in the Brillouin zone are discussed. Due to vanishing density of states ($\varrho(E) \sim |E|$) various orderings in the bulk of the system, such as the antiferromagnet and charge-density-wave, set in for sufficiently strong onsite ($U$) and nearest-neighbor ($V$) repulsions, respectively. While onset of these two orderings from the semimetallic phase takes place through continuous quantum phase transitions, a first-order transition …
We demonstrate that a Chern insulator could be realized on a real two-dimensional lattice of an organic Dirac semimetal α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 by introducing potential and magnetic modulations in a unit cell. It is a topologically-nontrivial insulator which shows the quantum Hall effect even at zero magnetic field. We assumed a pattern of site potential and staggered plaquette magnetic flux on the lattice so as to imitate the observed stripe charge ordering pattern. When the magnetic modulation is sufficiently large, the system becomes a Chern insulator, where Berry curvatures around two gapped Dirac…
We use the first principles and effective Hamiltonian methods to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a recently synthesized layered antiferromagnetic square net topological semimetal EuZnSb$_2$ [1]. The main message of the paper is that effects of small changes in the band structure produced by the magnetic ordering and changes in the orientation of the \Neel vector are amplified in such transport properties as the spin Hall conductivity. We predict that the effects of the broken symmetry introduced by the ordering of the \Neel vector, being very weak in the bulk, are pro…
We theoretically study the carrier doping effect for magnetism in a stacked-kagome system $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$ based on an effective model and the Hartree-Fock method. We show the electron filling and temperature dependences of the magnetic order parameter. The perpendicular ferromagnetic ordering is suppressed by hole doping, wheres undoped $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$ shows magnetic Weyl semimetal state. Additionally, in the electron-doped regime, we find a non-collinear antiferromagnetic ordering. Especially, in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic state, by considering a certain spin-orbit …
Spin semimetals are a recently discovered new class of spintronic materials, which exhibit a band gap in one spin channel while a semimetallic feature in the other and thus allows for tunable spin transport. Here, we present experimental verification of spin semimetallic behavior in FeRhCrSi, a quaternary Heusler alloy with saturation moment 2 $μ_B$ and Curie temperature $>$ 400 K. It crystallises in the L2$_1$ structure with 50$\%$ antisite disorder between Fe and Rh. Below 300 K, it shows a weakly temperature dependent electrical resistivity with negative temperature coefficient, indicating …
We observed the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order in the single-crystalline ternary pnictide HoPdBi, a plausible topological semimetal. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at $T_N =$1.9 K and exhibits superconductivity below $T_c =$0.7 K, which was confirmed by magnetic, electrical transport and specific heat measurements. The specific heat shows anomalies corresponding to antiferromagnetic ordering transition and crystalline field effect, but not to superconducting transition. Single-crystal neutron diffraction indicates that the antiferromagnetic structure is…
The subject of topological materials has attracted immense attention in condensed-matter physics, because they host new quantum states of matter containing Dirac, Majorana, or Weyl fermions. Although Majorana fermions can only exist on the surface of topological superconductors, Dirac and Weyl fermions can be realized in both 2D and 3D materials. The latter are semimetals with Dirac/Weyl cones either not tilted (type I) or tilted (type II). Although both Dirac and Weyl fermions have massless nature with the nontrivial Berry phase, the formation of Weyl fermions in 3D semimetals require either …
Weyl and Dirac semimetals recently stimulate intense research activities due to their novel properties. Combining first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we predict that nonmagnetic compounds BaYBi (Y=Au, Ag and Cu) are Dirac semimetals. As for the magnetic compound EuYBi, although the time reversal symmetry is broken, their long-range magnetic ordering cannot split the Dirac point into pairs of Weyl points. However, we propose that partially substitute Eu ions by Ba ions will realize the Weyl semimetal.
Here we report successful synthesis of single crystalline magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. The synthesized crystal is characterized through various tools viz. X-ray diffraction, field emission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A clear ferromagnetic transition is observed in magnetization and heat capacity at around 175K, which is further verified through electrical transport measurements. Hysteresis is observed in R-T measurements in cooling and warming cycle, showing the presence of first order phase transition and charge ordering in the synthesized sample. The synthe…
We study with first-principles methods the interplay between bulk and surface Dirac fermions in three dimensional Dirac semimetals. By combining density functional theory with the coherent potential approximation, we reveal a topological phase transition in Na$_3$Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ and Cd$_3$[As$_{1-x}$P$_x$]$_2$ alloys, where the material goes from a Dirac semimetal to a trivial insulator upon changing Sb or P concentrations. Tuning the composition allows us to engineer the position of the bulk Dirac points in reciprocal space. Interestingly, the phase transition coincides with the reversal o…
We study three-dimensional nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) with magnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit interaction. Two distinct classes of magnetic NLSMs are proposed. The first class is band-inversion NLSM where the accidental line node is induced by band inversion and locally protected by glide mirror plane and the combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries. This can be viewed as a trivial stacking of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals. The second class is essential NLSM where the nodal features are filling-enforced by specific magnetic symmetry group. We further pro…
We present a new type of three-dimensional essential Dirac semimetal with magnetic ordering. The Dirac points are protected by the magnetic space groups and cannot be gapped without lowering such symmetries, where the combined antiunitary symmetry of half-translation operator and time-reversal plays an essential role. We introduce two explicit tight-binding models for space groups $16$ and $102$, which possesses Dirac point at time-reversal-invariant momenta of surface Brillouin zone. In contrast to the time-reversal-invariant essential Dirac semimetal, the magnetic space groups here can be ei…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals are expected to have extraordinary physical properties such as a chiral anomaly and large anomalous Hall effects that may be useful for future, potential, spintronics applications. However, in most known host materials, multiple pairs of Weyl points prevent a clear manifestation of the intrinsic topological effects. Our recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations study suggest that EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can host Dirac fermions in an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state or a single pair of Weyl fermions in a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered state. Unfortunately,…
We theoretically investigate ferromagnetic ordering in magnetically doped solid-solution narrow-gap semiconductors with the strong spin-orbit interaction such as Cr-doped Bi$_2$(Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$)$_3$. We compute the spontaneous magnetization of impurities and itinerant electrons, and estimate the critical temperature as a function of the concentration of magnetic dopants and the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. It is found that the critical temperature is proportional to the concentration of dopants and enhanced with the strong spin-orbit interaction. It is also found that the ferromagn…
We calculate the temperature dependent long-range magnetic coupling in the presence of dilute concentrations of random magnetic impurities in chiral multilayer two-dimensional semimetals, i.e., undoped intrinsic multilayer graphene. Assuming a carrier-mediated indirect RKKY exchange interaction among the well-separated magnetic impurities with the itinerant carriers mediating the magnetic interaction between the impurities, we investigate the magnetic properties of intrinsic multilayer graphene using an effective chiral Hamiltonian model. We find that due to the enhanced density of states in t…
We report the observation of superconductivity with multiple magnetic ordering and Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling in a layered polar semimetal EuAuBi. Magnetic transition is observed at 4 K, followed by a superconducting transition at 2.2 K, which is sensitive to the crystal surface conditions. The upper critical field Hc2 of 9.8 T for the out-of-plane field is three times higher than that for the in-plane field, which can be associated with the two-dimensional structure or the surface state. On the basis of first-principles calculations, it is found that the characteristic Hc2 possibly refle…
The acute sensitivity of the electrical resistance of certain systems to magnetic fields known as extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) has recently been explored in a new materials context with topological semimetals. Exemplified by WTe$_{2}$ and rare earth monopnictide La(Sb,Bi), these systems tend to be non-magnetic, nearly compensated semimetals and represent a platform for large magnetoresistance driven by intrinsic electronic structure. Here we explore electronic transport in magnetic members of the latter family of semimetals and find that XMR is strongly modulated by magnetic order. In parti…
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…
Weyl semimetal (WSM) as a new type of quantum state of matter hosting low energy relativistic quasiparticles, has attracted significant attention for both scientific community and potential quantum device applications. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic and transport properties of noncentrosymmetric RAlSi (R = Sm, Ce), which have been predicted to be new magnetic WSM candidates. Both samples exhibit non-saturated magnetoresistance (MR), with ~ 900% for SmAlSi and 80% for CeAlSi at 1.8 K, 9 T. The carrier densities of SmAlSi and CeAlSi display remarkable c…
