We investigate how nonlocal entanglement, as identified by violations of a Bell inequality, may be protected during the evolution. Our system consists of two qubits each embedded in a bosonic reservoir evolving independently and initially in an entangled mixed state. We show that the violation of the Bell inequality can be related to the single-qubit population of excited state in such a way that, by appropriately choosing structured environments that give rise to sufficiently high values of population trapping, long-time protection of nonlocal entanglement can be correspondingly achieved.
In this work, a genuine mechanism of entanglement protection of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative common reservoir is investigated. Based on the generating of bound state for the system-reservoir, we show that stronger bound state in the energy spectrum can be created by adding other non-interacting qubits into the reservoir. In the next step, it is found that obtaining higher degrees of boundedness in the energy spectrum leads to better protection of two-qubit entanglement against the dissipative noises. Also, it is figured out that the formation of bound state not only exclus…

We have studied the analytical dynamics of Bell nonlocality as measured by CHSH inequality and entanglement as measured by concurrence for two noisy qubits that have dipole-dipole interaction. The nonlocal entanglement created by the dipole-dipole interaction is found to be protected from sudden death for certain initial states.
Nonlocal gate operation is based on sharing an ancillary pair of qubits in perfect entanglement. When the ancillary pair are partially entangled, the efficiency of the gate operation drops. Using general transformations, we devise probabilistic nonlocal gates, which perform the nonlocal operation conclusively when the ancillary pair are only partially entangled. We show that a controlled purification protocol can be implemented by the probabilistic nonlocal operation.
We study the relations between quantum coherence and quantum nonlocality, genuine quantum entanglement and genuine quantum nonlocality. We show that the coherence of a qubit state can be converted to the nonlocality of two-qubit states via incoherent operations. The results are also generalized to qudit case. Furthermore, rigorous relations between the quantum coherence of a single-partite state and the genuine multipartite quantum entanglement, as well as the genuine three-qubit quantum nonlocality are established.
Entanglement and Bell nonlocality are used to describe quantum inseparabilities. Bell-nonlocal states form a strict subset of entangled states. A natural question arises concerning how much territory Bell nonlocality occupies entanglement for a general two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we investigate the relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality by using lots of randomly generated two-qubit states, and give out a constraint inequality relation between the two quantum resources. For studying the upper or lower boundary of the inequality relation, we discover maximally (minimally…
Although entanglement is widely recognized as one of the most fascinating characteristics of quantum mechanics, nonlocality remains to be a big labyrinth. The proof of existence of nonlocality is as yet not much convincing because of its strong reliance on Bell's theorem where the assumption of realism weakens the proof. We demonstrate that entanglement and quantum nonlocality are two equivalent aspects of the same quantum wholeness for spacelike separated quantum systems. This result implies that quantum mechanics is indeed a nonlocal theory and lays foundation of understanding quantum nonloc…
We show that continuous dynamical decoupling can protect a two-qubit entangled state from sudden death at finite temperature due to uncorrelated dephasing, bit flipping, and dissipation. We consider a situation where an entangled state shared between two non-interacting qubits is initially prepared and left evolve under the environmental perturbations and the protection of external fields. To illustrate the protection of the entanglement, we solve numerically a master equation in the Born approximation, considering independent boson fields at the same temperature coupled to the different error…
We study the potential of adaptive optics (AO) to protect entanglement of high-dimensional photonic orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) states against turbulence-induced phase distortions. We demonstrate that AO is able to reduce crosstalk among the OAM modes and, consequently, the entanglement decay as well as photon losses. A test of the AO-stabilized output state against high-dimensional Bell inequalities shows that the transmitted entanglement allows for secure communication, even in the strong scintillation regime.
We study the Bell nonlocality of high dimensional quantum systems based on quantum entanglement. A quantitative relationship between the maximal expectation value B of Bell operators and the quantum entanglement concurrence C is obtained for even dimension pure states, with the upper and lower bounds of B governed by C.
Nonlocality and entanglement are not only the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics but also important resources for quantum information and computation applications. Exploiting the quantitative relationship between the two different resources is of both theoretical and practical significance. The common choice for quantifying the nonlocality of a two-qubit state is the maximal violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. That for entanglement is entanglement of formation, which is a function of the concurrence. In this paper, we systematically investigate the quantitativ…
We introduce a protocol for steady-state entanglement generation and protection based on detuning modulation in the dissipative interaction between a two-qubit system and a bosonic mode. The protocol is a global-addressing scheme which only requires control over the system as a whole. We describe a postselection procedure to project the register state onto a subspace of maximally entangled states. We also outline how our proposal can be implemented in a circuit-quantum electrodynamics setup.
Energy-time entangled biphoton source plays a great role in quantum communication, quantum metrology and quantum cryptography due to its strong temporal correlation and capability of nonlocal dispersion cancellation. As a quantum effect, nonlocal dispersion cancellation is further proposed as an alternative way for nonlocality test of continuous variable entanglement via the violation of Bell-like inequality proposed by Wasak et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 82, 052120 (2010)]. However, to date there is no experimental report either on the inequality violation or on a nonlocal detection with single-photo…
In this work, a mechanism for long time protection of entanglement of a two-qutrit V-type atomic system each of which interacts independently with a dissipative reservoir is investigated. It is shown that the protection process is related exclusively on the formation of bound states in the system-reservoir energy spectrum. It is demonstrated that the degree of boundedness for the system-reservoir bound states is well-controlled by entering other V-type qutrits into the reservoirs, and also through the manipulation of the spontaneously generated interference related to decay channels of the V-t…
We investigate the dynamics of entanglement and nonlocality for multipartite quantum systems under collective dephasing. Using an exact and computable measure for genuine entanglement, we demonstrate the possibility of a non trivial phenomenon of time-invariant entanglement for multipartite quantum systems. We find that for four qubits, there exist quantum states, which are changing continously nevertheless their genuine entanglement remains constant. Based on our numerical results, we conjecture that there is no evidence of time-invariant entanglement for quantum states of three qubits. We po…
On the analytic ground we examine a physical mechanism how particle velocity can protect an entanglement when quantum system is embedded in Markovian or non-Markovian environment. In particular the effect of particle velocity is examined in the entanglement sudden death (ESD) and revival of entanglement (ROE) phenomena. Even though particles move fast, the ESD phenomenon does not disappear if it occurs at zero velocity. However the time domain $0 \leq t \leq t_*$ for nonvanishing entanglement becomes larger and larger with increasing velocity. When ROE phenomenon occurs at zero velocity, even …
We study the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality of a coupled two-qubit system, in which each qubit is coupled with one individual environment. We study how the nonequilibrium environments (with different temperatures or chemical potentials) influence the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. The nonequilibrium environments can have constructive effects on the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic cost can sustain the thermal energy or particle current and enhance the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. However, the nonequilibrium conditions (characterized b…
The notions of three-particle entanglement and three-particle nonlocality are discussed in the light of Svetlichny's inequality [Phys. Rev. D 35, 3066 (1987)]. It is shown that there exist sets of measurements which can be used to prove three-particle entanglement, but which are nevertheless useless at proving three-particle nonlocality. In particular, it is shown that the quantum predictions giving a maximal violation of Mermin's three-particle Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1838 (1990)] can be reproduced by a hybrid hidden variables model in which nonlocal correlations are present onl…
The construction of nonlocal sets of quantum states has attracted much attention in recent years. We first introduce two Lemmas related to the triviality of orthogonality-preserving local measurements. Then we propose a general construction of nonlocal set of $n(d-1)+1$ orthogonal product states in $(\mathbb{C}^{d})^{\otimes n}$. The sets of nonlocal orthogonal product states are also put forward for the multipartite quantum systems with arbitrary dimensions. Our novel construction gives rise to nonlocal sets of orthogonal product states with much less members and thus reveals the phenomenon o…
"action at a distance" is a weird concept in quantum theory which people always avoid mentioning in most occasions. In this work, without involving any concept about "action at a distance", we naturally construct a physical structure that resembles quantum entanglement only based on the nonlocality of the wave function. To achieve this, we propose a nonlocal structure of the single particle wave function by means of a double-well potential model. In order to better describe this nonlocal system, we have also developed two kinds of representations: local representation and nonlocal representati…
Quantum nonlocality can be revealed "via local contextuality" in qudit-qudit entangled systems with $d > 2$, that is, through the violation of inequalities containing Alice-Bob correlations that admit a local description, and Alice-Alice correlations (between the results of sequences of measurements on Alice's subsystem) that admit a local (but contextual) description. A fundamental question to understand the respective roles of entanglement and local contextuality is whether nonlocality via local contextuality exists when the parties have only qubit-qubit entanglement. Here we respond affirma…
Measuring a nonlocal observable on a space-like separated quantum system is a resource-hungry and experimentally challenging task. Several theoretical measurement schemes have already been proposed to increase its feasibility, using a shared maximally-entangled ancilla. We present a new approach to this problem, using the language of generalized quantum measurements, to show that it is actually possible to measure a nonlocal spin product observable without necessarily requiring a maximally-entangled ancilla. This approach opens the door to more economical arbitrary-strength nonlocal measuremen…
We experimentally demonstrate the superior discrimination of separated, unentangled two-qubit correlated states using nonlocal measurements, when compared with measurements based on local operations and classical communications. When predicted theoretically, this phenomenon was dubbed "quantum nonlocality without entanglement." We characterize the performance of the nonlocal, or joint, measurement with a payoff function, for which we measure 0.72(2), compared with the maximum locally achievable value of 2/3 and the overall optimal value of 0.75.
We examine the possibilities of non-trivial phenomena of time-invariant entanglement and freezing dynamics of entanglement for qutrit-qutrit quantum systems. We find no evidence for time-invariant entanglement, however, we do observe that quantum states freeze their entanglement after decaying for some time. It is interesting that quantum states are changing whereas their entanglement remains constant. We find that the combined action of decoherence free subspaces and subspaces where quantum states decay, facilitate this phenomenon. This study is an extension of similar phenomena observed for …

We consider a special kind of mixed states -- a {\it Werner derivative}, which is the state transformed by nonlocal unitary -- local or nonlocal -- operations from a Werner state. We show the followings. (i) The amount of entanglement of Werner derivatives cannot exceed that of the original Werner state. (ii) Although it is generally possible to increase the entanglement of a single copy of a Werner derivative by LQCC, the maximal possible entanglement cannot exceed the entanglement of the original Werner state. The extractable entanglement of Werner derivatives is limited by the entanglement …
We propose a new scheme for realizing nonlocal nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier by means of genuine four-mode entanglement. The nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier is regarded as a unitary transformation from two input fields to two outputs. Two inputs and two outputs are located at the remote stations respectively. Employing off-line four-mode entanglement, homodyne detection, classical communication and local displacement, the nonlocal nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier can be achieved. This scheme can be implemented with a setup that is experimentally accessible at …

We present an efficient way for measuring the entanglement of the atoms. Through the auxiliary single photons input-output process in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the concurrence of the atomic entanglement can be obtained according to the success probability of picking up the singlet states of the atoms. This protocol has three advantages: First, we do not require the sophisticated controlled-not (CNOT) gates. Second, the distributed atoms are not required to intact with each other. Third, the atomic entanglement can be distributed nonlocally, which provides its important applications…
Quantum entanglement and quantum nonlocality of $N$-photon entangled states $|ψ_{N m}> =\mathcal{N}_{m}[\cosγ|N-m>_{1}|m>_{2} +e^{iθ_{m}}\sinγ|m>_{1}|N-m>_{2}]$ and their superpositions are studied. We indicate that the relative phase $θ_{m}$ affects quantum nonlocality but not quantum entanglement for the state $|ψ_{N m}>$. We show that quantum nonlocality can be controlled and manipulated by adjusting the state parameters of $|ψ_{N m}>$, superposition coefficients, and the azimuthal angles of the Bell operator. We also show that the violation of the Bell inequality can reach its maximal valu…
Recently, it has been realized that nonlocal disentanglement may take a finite time as opposite to the asymptotic decay of local coherences. We find in this paper that a sudden irreversible death of entanglement takes place in a two atom optical Stern-Gerlach model. In particular, the one degree non dissipative environment here considered suddenly destroys the initial entanglement of any Bell's states $\ket{ϕ^{\pm}}$ superposition.
The paper titled "Tripartite entanglement versus tripartite nonlocality in 3-qubit GHZ-class states", (Physical Review Letters 102, 250404 (2009)), does very important work on studying the nature of Svetlichny Inequalities (which are Bell-type inequalities) and sheds light on some important properties and relationship between Svetlichny inequality and tripartite entanglement. It derives a result for the maximum expectation value of Svetlichny operator for GGHZ and MS states. In this comment, it is put forth that there is probably a mistake in the central result derived in the paper.
In quant-ph/0201134 Jennewein et al. report experiments demonstrating entanglement swapping under various conditions. In one instance, they claim to have exhibited Bell inequality violations by a pair of photons prior to performing any entangling operations on the pair. However, the Bell inequality violation results in this case from post-selection of the data, not from quantum non-locality.
In this paper we study how to preserve entanglement and nonlocality under dephasing produced by classical noise with large low-frequency components, as $1/f$ noise, by Dynamical Decoupling techniques. We first show that quantifiers of entanglement and nonlocality satisfy a closed relation valid for two independent qubits locally coupled to a generic environment under pure dephasing and starting from a general class of initial states. This result allows to assess the efficiency of pulse-based dynamical decoupling for protecting nonlocal quantum correlations between two qubits subject to pure-de…
While all bipartite pure entangled states are known to generate correlations violating a Bell inequality, and are therefore nonlocal, the quantitative relation between pure-state entanglement and nonlocality is poorly understood. In fact, some Bell inequalities are maximally violated by non-maximally entangled states and this phenomenon is also observed for other operational measures of nonlocality. In this work, we study a recently proposed measure of nonlocality defined as the probability that a pure state displays nonlocal correlations when subjected to random measurements. We first prove t…

We study the dynamics of genuine multipartite entanglement for quantum systems upto four qubits interacting with general collective dephasing process. Using a computable entanglement monotone for multipartite systems, we observe the feature of freezing dynamics of genuine entanglement for three and four qubits entangled states. We compare the dynamics with that of random states and find that most states exibit this feature. We then study the effects of collective dephasing on genuine nonlocality and find out that although quantum states remain genuinely entangled yet their genuine nonlocality …
We investigate the creation of entanglement between two quantum emitters interacting with a realistic common stationary electromagnetic field out of thermal equilibrium. In the case of two qubits we show that the absence of equilibrium allows the generation of steady entangled states, which is inaccessible at thermal equilibrium and is realized without any further external action on the two qubits. We first give a simple physical interpretation of the phenomenon in a specific case and then we report a detailed investigation on the dependence of the entanglement dynamics on the various physical…
We develop a geometric approach to quantify the capability of creating entanglement for a general physical interaction acting on two qubits. We use the entanglement measure proposed by us for $N$-qubit pure states (PRA \textbf{77}, 062334 (2008)). Our procedure reproduces the earlier results (PRL \textbf{87}, 137901 (2001)). The geometric method has the distinct advantage that it gives an experimental way to monitor the process of optimizing entanglement production.
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a form of inseparability in quantum theory commonly acknowledged to be intermediate between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. However, this statement has so far only been proven for a restricted class of measurements, namely projective measurements. Here we prove that entanglement, one-way steering, two-way steering and nonlocality are genuinely different considering general measurements, i.e. single round positive-operator-valued-measures. Finally, we show that the use of sequences of measurements is relevant for steering tests, as they can be used to reve…
Entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and Bell's failure of local-hidden-variable (LHV) theories are three historically famous forms of "quantum nonlocality". We give experimental criteria for these three forms of nonlocality in multi-particle systems, with the aim of better understanding the transition from microscopic to macroscopic nonlocality. We examine the nonlocality of N separated spin J systems. First, we obtain multipartite Bell inequalities that address the correlation between spin values measured at each site, and then we review spin squeezing inequalities that ad…
The utilization and control of nonlocal quantum interactions is an area of active investigation. This is not limited to subatomic structures but extends to the macroscopic level. Nonlocal interactions can be from either entanglement or path indistinguishability (the path integral for larger systems), with the latter being further subdivided as discussed. These two distinct phenomenon have recently been treated often in the literature as essentially identical, which is problematic when utilizing them for practical applications. The confusion may lie in misunderstanding the physics of the type I…
The dynamical evolution of entanglement between two polarizable two-level atoms in weak interaction with electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations is investigated. We find that, for initial Bell state $ψ^{\pm}$, the decay rate of entanglement between atoms is just the superradiant spontaneous emission rate, which depends not only on the spontaneous emission rate of atom but also on the modulation of the spontaneous emission rate due to the presence of another atom. It is shown that, with the presence of a boundary, the entanglement between transversely polarizable atoms can be protected for a very l…
Entanglement of quasiclassical (coherent) states of two harmonic oscillators leads to striking quantum effects and is useful for quantum technologies. These effects and applications are closely related to nonlocal correlations inherent in these states, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities. With previous frameworks, this violation is limited by the size of the system, which does not approach the maximum even when the amount of entanglement approaches its maximum. Here we propose a new version of Bell correlation operators, with which a nearly maximal violation can be obtained as lon…
In 1927, at the Solvay conference, Einstein posed a thought experiment with the primary intention of showing the incompleteness of quantum mechanics; to prove it, he uses the instantaneous nonlocal effects caused by the collapse of the wave function of a single particle -the spooky action at a distance-, when a measurement is done. This historical event precede the well-know Einstein-Podolsk-Rosen criticism over the incompleteness of quantum mechanics. Here, by using the Stern-Gerlach experiment (SGE), we demonstrate how the instantaneous nonlocal feature of the collapse of the wave function t…
Bound entanglement, being entangled yet not distillable, is essential to our understandings of the relations between nonlocality and entanglement besides its applications in certain quantum information tasks. Recently, bound entangled states that violate a Bell inequality have been constructed for a two-qutrit system, disproving a conjecture by Peres that bound entanglement is local. Here we shall construct such kind of nonlocal bound entangled states for all finite dimensions larger than two, making possible their experimental demonstrations on most general systems. We propose a Bell inequali…
It is shown that the outcomes of measurements on systems in separable mixed states can be partitioned, via subsequent measurements on a disentangled extraneous system, into subensembles that display the statistics of entangled states. This motivates the introduction of the concept of "counterfactual" entanglement, which can be associated with all separable mixed states including those that are factorable. This type of entanglement gives rise to a new kind of postselection-induced Bell inequality violation. The significance of counterfactual entanglement, and its physical implications, are asse…
We study a generalization of nonlocal games---which we call extended nonlocal games---in which the players, Alice and Bob, initially share a tripartite quantum state with the referee. In such games, the winning conditions for Alice and Bob may depend on outcomes of measurements made by the referee, on its part of the shared quantum state, in addition to Alice and Bob's answers to randomly selected questions. Our study of this class of games was inspired by the monogamy-of-entanglement games introduced by Tomamichel, Fehr, Kaniewski, and Wehner, which they also generalize. We prove that a natur…
The direct measurement of nonlocal properties of entangled quantum systems has been the subject of several recent experimental investigations. Of particular interest is the implementation of nonlocal measurements via indirect measurement schemes, which allow for greater flexibility in the control of the measurement strength. Building on previous results established in the bipartite case, we present a scheme to implement genuine nonlocal measurements of N-qubit systems with variable strength, using GHZ-like entangled qubit meters. This method can be applied to the joint measurement of commuting…
We consider multiple entanglement swappings performed on a chain of bipartite states. Each state does not violate CHSH inequality. We show that before some critical number of entanglement swappings is achieved the output state does not violate this inequality either. However, if this number is achieved then for some results of Bell measurements obtained in the protocol of entanglement swapping the output state violates CHSH inequality. Moreover, we show that for different states we have different critical numbers for which CHSH inequality is activated.
We provide a general framework which allows one to obtain the dynamics of $N$ noninteracting spatially indistinguishable particles locally coupled to separated environments. The approach is universal, being valid for both bosons and fermions and for any type of system-environment interaction. It is then applied to study the dynamics of two identical qubits under paradigmatic Markovian noises, such as phase damping, depolarizing and amplitude damping. We find that spatial indistinguishability of identical qubits is a controllable intrinsic property of the system which protects quantum entanglem…
Recently, Halder \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{122}, 040403 (2019)] proposed the concept strong nonlocality without entanglement: an orthogonal set of fully product states in multipartite quantum systems that is locally irreducible for every bipartition of the subsystems. As the difficulty of the problem, most of the results are restricted to tripartite systems. Here we consider a weaker form of nonlocality called local distinguishability based genuine nonlocality. A set of orthogonal multipartite quantum states is said to be genuinely nonlocal if it is locally indistinguishable for …
We show that for two-qubit chained Bell inequalities with an arbitrary number of measurement settings, nonlocality and entanglement are not only different properties but are inversely related. Specifically, we analytically prove that in absence of noise, robustness of nonlocality, defined as the maximum fraction of detection events that can be lost such that the remaining ones still do not admit a local model, and concurrence are inversely related for any chained Bell inequality with an arbitrary number of settings. The closer quantum states are to product states, the harder it is to reproduce…
Two objections have been raised to the arguments presented in O. Cohen, Phys. Rev. A 60, 80 (1999). It is pointed out that neither objection has anything whatsoever to do with the main subject matter of that paper, and shown that both objections are based on misunderstandings of the examples to which they relate.
The temporal evolution of entanglement between a noisy system and an ancillary system is analyzed in the context of continuous time open quantum system dynamics. Focusing on a couple of analytically solvable models for qubit systems, we study how Markovian and non-Markovian characteristics influence the problem, discussing in particular their associated entanglement-breaking regimes. These performances are compared with those one could achieve when the environment of the system is forced to return to its input configuration via periodic instantaneous resetting procedures.
