Let $B$ be a curve defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and let $X\to B$ be an elliptic surface with base curve $B$. We investigate the geometry of everywhere locally trivial principal homogeneous spaces for $X$, i.e. elements of the Tate-Shafarevich group. If $Y$ is such a principal homogeneous space of order $n$, we find strong restrictions on the $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ bundle over $B$ into which $Y$ embeds. Examples for small values of $n$ show that, in at least some cases, these restrictions are sharp. Finally, we determine these bundles in case $k$ has characteristic zero, $B = \mathbb{P}^1$, and $X$ is generic in a suitable sense.
We consider principal bundles over homogeneous spaces G/P, where P is a parabolic subgroup of a semisimple and simply connected complex linear algebraic group G. We prove that a holomorphic principal H--bundle, where H is a complex reductive group, is homogeneous if the adjoint vector bundle ad(E) is homogeneous. We also show that E is homogeneous if its associated vector bundle for any finite dimensional faithful H--module is homogeneous.
Let G/P be a rational homogeneous variety, where P is a parabolic subgroup of a simple and simply connected linear algebraic group G defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A homogeneous principal bundle over G/P is semistable (respectively, polystable) if and only if it is equivariantly semistable (respectively, equivariantly polystable). A stable homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is equivariantly stable, but the converse is not true in general. If a homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is not equivariantly stable but not stable, then E_H admits an action ρ…
For g a split semisimple Lie algebra over a field of characteristic 0, we link locally trivial principal homogeneous spaces over Spec(R) to the question of conjugacy of maximal abelian diagonalizable subalgebras of g(R).
In this paper, we provide a systematic and constructive description of Vaisman structures on certain principal elliptic bundles over complex flag manifolds. From this description we explicitly classify homogeneous l.c.K. structures on compact homogeneous Hermitian manifolds using elements of representation theory of complex simple Lie algebras. Moreover, we also describe using Lie theory all homogeneous solutions of the Hermitian-Einstein-Weyl equation on compact homogeneous Hermitian-Weyl manifolds. As an application, we provide a huge class of explicit (nontrivial) examples of such structure…
Winkelmann considered compact complex manifolds $X$ equipped with a reduced effective normal crossing divisor $D\, \subset\, X$ such that the logarithmic tangent bundle $TX(-\log D)$ is holomorphically trivial. He characterized them as pairs $(X,\, D)$ admitting a holomorphic action of a complex Lie group $\mathbb G$ satisfying certain conditions \cite{Wi1}, \cite{Wi2}; this $\mathbb G$ is the connected component, containing the identity element, of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of $X$ that preserve $D$. We characterize the homogeneous holomorphic principal $H$--bundles over $X$, wher…
We propose a simple but effective framework for producing examples of covariant faithfully flat (generalised) Hopf-Galois extensions from a nested pair of quantum homogeneous spaces. Our construction is modelled on the classical situation of a homogeneous fibration $G/N \to G/M$, for $G$ a group, and $N \subseteq M \subseteq G$ subgroups. Variations on Takeuchi's equivalence and Schneider's descent theorem are presented in this context. Quantum flag manifolds and their associated quantum Poisson homogeneous spaces are taken as motivating examples. Moreover, a large collection of noncommutative…
Let H be a closed subgroup of a linear algebraic group G defined over a field F. There is an equivalence of categories between the category of linear finite-dimensional representations of H and the category of finite rank G-homogeneous vectorbundles on G/H. In this short note we study this correspondence for the sheaves of principal parts (=jetbundles) of homogeneous linebundles on projective space in characteristic zero. We describe the representation corresponding to the principal parts of a homogeneous linebundle and as a corollary we obtain known formulas on the splitting type of the princ…
We study the principal parts bundles $P^k (L)$ of the degree $d$ line bundle $L$ on the $n$ dimensional projective space as homogeneous bundles and we describe their associated quiver representations. We use this approach to show that if $n$ is greater or equal that 2, and $0\leq d<k$, then there exists an invariant splitting $P^k(L)=Q\oplus (S^dV\otimes \OO_{\PP^n})$ with $Q$ a stable homogeneous vector bundle. The splitting properties of such bundles were previously known only for n=1 or $k\leq d$ or $d<0$. Moreover we show that for any $d$ and any $h<k$ the canonical map from $P^k(L)$ to $P…
We obtain characterizations and structure results for homogeneous principal bundles over abelian varieties, that generalize work of Miyanishi and Mukai on homogeneous vector bundles. For this, we rely on notions and methods of algebraic transformation groups, especially observable subgroups and anti-affine groups.
In the present paper we investigate the question about the injectivity of the map F(R) --> F(K) induced by the canonical inclusion of a local regular ring of geometric type R to its field of fractions K for a homotopy invariant functor F with transfers satisfying some additional properties. As an application we get the original proof of Special Unitary Case of Grothendieck's conjecture about principal homogeneous spaces and some other interesting examples.
Given a holomorphic principal bundle $Q\, \longrightarrow\, X$, the universal space of holomorphic connections is a torsor $C_1(Q)$ for $\text{ad} Q \otimes T^*X$ such that the pullback of $Q$ to $C_1(Q)$ has a tautological holomorphic connection. When $X\,=\, G/P$, where $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of a complex simple group $G$, and $Q$ is the frame bundle of an ample line bundle, we show that $C_1(Q)$ may be identified with $G/L$, where $L\, \subset\, P$ is a Levi factor. We use this identification to construct the twistor space associated to a natural hyper-Kähler metric on $T^*(G/P)$, reco…
This is a survey paper about a selection of results in complex algebraic geometry that appeared in the recent and less recent litterature, and in which rational homogeneous spaces play a prominent r{ô}le. This selection is largely arbitrary and mainly reflects the interests of the author.
We establish a relative version of the abstract "affine representability" theorem in ${\mathbb A}^1$--homotopy theory from Part I of this paper. We then prove some ${\mathbb A}^1$--invariance statements for generically trivial torsors under isotropic reductive groups over infinite fields analogous to the Bass--Quillen conjecture for vector bundles. Putting these ingredients together, we deduce representability theorems for generically trivial torsors under isotropic reductive groups and for associated homogeneous spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$--homotopy theory.
Given a connected algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field and a G-homogeneous space X, we describe the Chow ring of G and the rational Chow ring of X, with special attention to the Picard group. Also, we investigate the Albanese and the "anti-affine" fibrations of G and X.
We define homogeneous principal Higgs and co-Higgs bundles over irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type. We provide a classification for each type of object up to isomorphism, which in each case can be interpreted as defining a moduli space.
In this paper we present a new method to show that a principal homogeneous space of the Jacobian of a curve of genus two is nontrivial. The idea is to exhibit a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of rational points on a quotient of this principal homogeneous space. In an explicit example we apply the method to show that a specific curve has infinitely many quadratic twists whose Jacobians have nontrivial Tate-Shafarevich group.
We characterize the canonical algebras such that for all dimension vectors of homogeneous modules the corresponding module varieties are complete intersections (respectively, normal). We also investigate the sets of common zeros of semi-invariants of non-zero degree in important cases. In particular, we show that for sufficiently big vectors they are complete intersections and calculate the number of their irreducible components.
We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.
We show that a weighted homogeneous complex surface singularity is metrically conical (i.e., bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a metric cone) only if its two lowest weights are equal. We also give an example of a pair of weighted homogeneous complex surface singularities that are topologically equivalent but not bi-Lipschitz equivalent.
We present a new proof of the classification of complex simple Lie algebras via the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties. Our proof proceeds by constructing homogeneous varieties using the ideals of the secant and tangential varieties of homogeneous varieties already constructed. Our algorithms make no reference to root systems. Our proofs use properties of root systems, but not their classification.
We study the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties $X= G/P\subset P(V)$, where $G$ is a complex simple Lie group, $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup and $V$ is the minimal $G$-module associated to $P$. Our study began with the observation that Freudenthal's magic chart could be derived from Zak's theorem on Severi varieties and standard geometric constructions. Our attempt to understand this observation led us to discover further connections between projective geometry and representation theory. Among other things, we calculate the variety of tangent directions to lines on $X$ through …
We prove the existence of canonical tubular neighbourhoods around complex submanifolds of Kähler manifolds that are adapted to both the holomorphic and symplectic structure. This is done by solving the complex Homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation on the deformation to the normal cone of the submanifold. We use this to establish local regularity for global weak solutions, giving local smoothness to the (weak) geodesic rays in the space of (weak) Kähler potentials associated to a given complex submanifold. We also use it to get an optimal regularity result for naturally defined plurisubharmonic env…
