We investigate the dynamics of a two dimensional axial next nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model following a quench to zero temperature. The Hamiltonian is given by $H = -J_0\sum_{i,j=1}^L S_{i,j}S_{i+1,j} - J_1\sum_{i,j=1} [S_{i,j} S_{i,j+1} -κS_{i,j} S_{i,j+2}]$. For $κ<1$, the system does not reach the equilibrium ground state but slowly evolves to a metastable state. For $κ> 1$, the system shows a behaviour similar to the two dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the sense that it freezes to a striped state with a finite probability. The persistence probability shows algebraic decay here with an exponent $θ= 0.235 \pm 0.001$ while the dynamical exponent of growth $z=2.08\pm 0.01$. For $κ=1$, the system belongs to a completely different dynamical class; it always evolves to the true ground state with the persistence and dynamical exponent having unique values. Much of the dynamical phenomena can be understood by studying the dynamics and distribution of the number of domains walls. We also compare the dynamical behaviour to that of a Ising model in which both the nearest and next nearest neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic.
We investigate the ordering kinetics for axial next nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in one and two dimensions by the multi-spin heat bath dynamical simulation. This dynamics enables us to overcome the pinning effect and to observe the dynamical scaling law for domain growth in the ANNNI model at zero temperature. The domain growth exponent is 1/2 isotropically both in the ferromagnetic and the dry-(commensurate) antiphase. In the wet-(commensurate) antiphase, however, it is approximately 1/3 in the modulated direction, whereas it remains 1/2 in the non-modulated direction. We suggest that…
The dynamical percolation transition of two dimensional Axial Next Nearest Neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model to pulsed magnetic field has been studied by finite size scaling analysis (by Monte Carlo simulation) for various values of frustration parameters, pulse width and temperature (below the corresponding static transition temperature). It has been found that the size of the largest geometrical cluster shows a transition for a critical field amplitude. Although the transition points shift, the critical exponents remain invariant for a wide range of frustration parameters. It is also same as tha…
We investigate whether the floating phase (where the correlation length is infinite and the spin-spin correlation decays algebraically with distance) exists in the temperature($T$) - frustration parameter ($κ$) phase diagram of 2D ANNNI model. To identify this phase, we look for the region where (i) finite size effect is prominent and (ii) some relevant physical quantity changes somewhat sharply and this change becomes sharper as the system size increases. For $κ< 0.5 $, the low temperature phase is ferromagnetic and we study energy and magnetization. For $κ> 0.5 $, the low temperature phase i…
We study the equilibrium and dynamical properties of the ANNNI (axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising) chain at the multiphase point. An interesting property of the system is the macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state leading to finite zero-temperature entropy. In our equilibrium study we consider the effect of softening the spins. We show that the degeneracy of the ground state is lifted and there is a qualitative change in the low temperature behaviour of the system with a well defined low temperature peak of the specific heat that carries the thermodynamic ``weight'' of the ground state ent…
We investigate the phase diagram of a spin-$1/2$ Ising model on a cubic lattice, with competing interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors along an axial direction, and fully connected spins on the sites of each perpendicular layer. The problem is formulated in terms of a set of noninteracting Ising chains in a position-dependent field. At low temperatures, as in the standard mean-feild version of the Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model, there are many distinct spatially commensurate phases that spring from a multiphase point of infinitely degenerate ground states. As …
Zero temperature quench in the Axial Next Nearest Neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model fails to bring it to its ground state for a certain range of values of the frustration parameter $κ$, the ratio of the next nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic interaction strength to the nearest neighbour one. We apply several annealing methods, both classical and quantum, and observe that the behaviour of the residual energy and the order parameter depends on the value of $κ$ strongly. Classical or thermal annealing is found to be adequate for small values of $κ$. However, neither classical nor quantum annealing …
To study the ground state of ANNNI chain under transverse field as a function of frustration parameter $κ$ and field strength $Γ$, we present here two different perturbative analyses. In one, we consider the (known) ground state at $κ=0.5$ and $Γ=0$ as the unperturbed state and treat an increase of the field from 0 to $Γ$ coupled with an increase of $κ$ from 0.5 to $0.5+rΓ$ as perturbation. The first order perturbation correction to eigenvalue can be calculated exactly and we could conclude that there are only two phase transition lines emanating from the point $κ=0.5$, $Γ=0$. In the second pe…
The phase diagram of the two-dimensional ANNNI model has long been theoretically debated. Extremely long structural correlations and relaxation times further result in numerical simulations making contradictory predictions. Here, we introduce a numerical transfer matrix treatment that bypasses these problems, and thus overcome various ambiguities in the phase diagram. In particular, we confirm the transition temperatures and clarify the order of the transition to the floating incommensurate phase. Our approach motivates considering transfer matrices for resolving long-standing problems in rela…
In this work, we study the critical behavior of second order points and specifically of the Lifshitz point (LP) of a three-dimensional Ising model with axial competing interactions (ANNNI model), using time-dependent Monte Carlo simulations. First of all, we used a recently developed technique that helps us localize the critical temperature corresponding to the best power law for magnetization decay over time: $\left\langle M\right\rangle _{m_{0}=1}\sim t^{-β/νz}\ $ which is expected of simulations starting from initially ordered states. Secondly, we obtain original results for the dynamic cri…
We have examined the spin ordering of an axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in two dimensions (2D) near above the antiphase ($\langle 2 \rangle$ phase). We considered an $N_R$-replica system and calculated an overlap function $q_m$ between different replicas having used a cluster heat bath (CHB) Monte Carlo method. We determined transition temperature between $\langle 2 \rangle$ phase and a floating incommensurate (IC) phase as $T_{C2}/J = 0.89 \pm 0.01$ with frustration ratio $κ(\equiv -J_2/J_1) = 0.6$. We found that the spin state at $T \gtrsim T_{C2}$ may be called as a domain …
The spin structure of an axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in two dimensions (2D) is a renewed problem because different Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methods predicted different spin orderings. The usual equilibrium simulation predicts the occurrence of a floating incommensurate (IC) Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type phase, which never emerges in non-equilibrium relaxation (NER) simulations. In this paper, we first examine previously published results of both methods, and then investigate a higher transition temperature, $T_{c1}$, between the IC and paramagnetic phases. In the usual e…
We investigate the dynamics of a two dimensional bi-axial next nearest neighbour Ising (BNNNI) model following a quench to zero temperature. The Hamiltonian is given by $H = -J_0\sum_{i,j=1}^L [(S_{i,j}S_{i+1,j}+S_{i,j}S_{i,j+1}) -κ(S_{i,j}S_{i+2,j} + S_{i,j}S_{i,j+2})]$ . For $κ<1$, the system does not reach the equilibrium ground state and keep evolving in active states for ever. For $κ\geq 1$, though the system reaches a final state, but it do not reach the ground state always and freezes to a striped state with a finite probability like two dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model and ANNNI m…
The axial next-nearest-neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model of finite thickness is studied. Using mean-field theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and low-temperature analyses, phase diagrams are determined, with a distinct phase diagram for each film thickness. The robustness of the phase diagrams against varying the couplings in the surface layers is analysed.
The variety of magnetic phases observed in rare-earth heterostructures at low temperatures \cite{Jehan}, such as Ho/Y, may be elucidated by an ANNNI-like model Hamiltonian. In previous work modelling bulk Ho \cite{Seno}, such a Hamiltonian with a one-dimensional parameter space produced a single multiphase point. In contrast, the parameter space of the heterostructure model is three-dimensional, and instead of an isolated multiphase point, we find two-dimensional multiphase regions. In an example of Villain's ``order from disorder'' \cite{Villain80a,Villain91}, an infinitesimal temperature bre…
An axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by using the non-equilibrium relaxation method. We find that the incommensurate stripe phase between the ordered phase and the paramagnetic phase is negligibly narrow or may vanish in the thermodynamic limit. The phase transition is the second-order transition if approached from the ordered phase, and it is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type if approached from the paramagnetic phase. Both transition temperatures coincide with each other within the numerical errors. The incommensurate phase which has been observed previously is a parama…
We show here for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 ANNNI (axial-next-to-nearest-neighbor-Ising) model in an external magnetic field that the linear density of Yang-Lee zeros may diverge with critical exponent $σ= -2/3$ at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The necessary condition for this unusual behavior is the triple degeneracy of the transfer matrix eigenvalues. If this condition is absent we have the usual value $σ= -1/2$. Analogous results have been found in the literature in the spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffths model and in the three-state Potts model in a magnetic field with two complex components. O…
We study the effect of antiferromagnetic interactions on the single spin-flip Glauber dynamics of two different one-dimensional (1D) Ising models with spin $\pm 1$. The first model is an Ising chain with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction limited to nearest neighbors and subject to an oscillating magnetic field. The system of master equations describing the time evolution of sublattice magnetizations can easily be solved within a linear field approximation and a long time limit. Resonant behavior of the magnetization as a function of temperature (stochastic resonance) is found, at low freq…
In this paper the three dimensional random field Ising model is studied at both zero temperature and positive temperature. Critical exponents are extracted at zero temperature by finite size scaling analysis of large discontinuities in the bond energy. The heat capacity exponent $α$ is found to be near zero. The ground states are determined for a range of external field and disorder strength near the zero temperature critical point and the scaling of ground state tilings of the field-disorder plane is discussed. At positive temperature the specific heat and the susceptibility are obtained usin…
We discuss an existence of the damping for the radial condensate oscillations in a cylindric trap at zero temperature. The damping is a result of the parametric resonance leading to energy transfer from the coherent condensate oscillations to the longitudinal sound waves within a finite frequency interval. The parametric resonance is due to the oscillations of the sound velocity. The triggering amplitudes at zero temperature are associated with the zero-point oscillations.
We consider a model in which the quantum fluctuation can be controlled and show that the system responds to a spatially periodic external field at zero temperature. This signifies the occurrence of spatial stochastic resonance where the fluctuations are purely quantum in nature. Various features of the phenomenon are discussed.
We investigate effects of quantum (zero-temperature) long wavelength fluctuations of free standing crystalline membranes, that are two-dimensional objects embedded into three-dimensional space. The fluctuations produce logarithmic renormalization of elasticity and bending moduli of the membranes. We find one-loop RG-equations to demonstrate that the system is in the "asymptotic freedom" regime that is the quantum fluctuations destabilize the flat membrane phase.
An asymmetric generalization of the zero-temperature Glauber model on a lattice is introduced. The dynamics of the particle-density and specially the large-time behavior of the system is studied. It is shown that the system exhibits two kinds of phase transition, a static one and a dynamic one.
We use zero-temperature Glauber dynamics to study hysteresis in the random-field Ising model on directed random graphs. The critical behavior of the model depends on the connectivity $z$ of the graph rather differently from that on undirected graphs. Directed graphs and zero-temperature dynamics are relevant to a wide class of social phenomena including opinion dynamics. We discuss the efficacy of increasing external influence in inducing a first-order phase transition in opinion dynamics. The numerical results are supported by an analytic solution of the model.
Using a Monte Carlo coarse-graining technique introduced by Binder et al., we have explicitly constructed the continuum field theory for the zero-temperature triangular Ising antiferromagnet. We verify the conjecture that this is a gaussian theory of the height variable in the interface representation of the spin model. We also measure the height-height correlation function and deduce the stiffness constant. In addition, we investigate the nature of defect-defect interactions at finite temperatures, and find that the two-dimensional Coulomb gas scenario applies at low temperatures.
In contrast to the infinite chain, the low-temperature expansion of a one-dimensional free-field Ising model has a strong dependence on boundary conditions. I derive explicit formula for the leading term of the expansion both under open and periodic boundary conditions, and show they are related to different distributions of partition function zeros on the complex temperature plane. In particular, when the periodic boundary condition is imposed, the leading coefficient of the expansion grows with size, due to the zeros approaching the origin.
The recently discovered dynamical phase transition denotes non-analytic behavior in the real time evolution of quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit and has been shown to occur in different systems at zero temperature [Heyl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 135704 (2013)]. In this paper we extend the analysis to non-zero temperature by studying a generalized form of the Loschmidt echo, the work distribution function, of a quantum quench in the transverse field Ising model. Although the quantitative behavior at non-zero temperatures still displays features derived from the zero temperature non…
In this paper we examine the role of the so called $c$-parallel updating schemes in relaxation from disordered states to the final ferromagnetic steady state. We investigate two zero-temperature single-spin flip dynamics on a one dimensional lattice of length $L$: inflow (i.e. generalized zero-temperature Glauber dynamics) and outflow opinion dynamics. The varying $c$ allows us to change the updating scheme from random sequential updating ($c=1/L$) to deterministic synchronous updating (for $c=1$). We show how the mean relaxation times depend on $c$ and scale with the system size $L$. Moreover…
We study phase ordering dynamics in the three-dimensional nearest-neighbor Ising model, following rapid quenches from infinite to zero temperature. Results on various aspects, viz., domain growth, persistence, aging and pattern, have been obtained via the Glauber Monte Carlo simulations of the model on simple cubic lattice. These are analyzed via state-of-the-art methods, including the finite-size scaling, and compared with those for quenches to a temperature above the roughening transition. Each of these properties exhibit remarkably different behavior at the above mentioned final temperature…
The zero-temperature dynamics of simple models such as Ising ferromagnets provides, as an alternative to the mean-field situation, interesting examples of dynamical systems with many attractors (absorbing configurations, blocked configurations, zero-temperature metastable states). After a brief review of metastability in the mean-field ferromagnet and of the droplet picture, we focus our attention onto zero-temperature single-spin-flip dynamics of ferromagnetic Ising models. The situations leading to metastability are characterized. The statistics and the spatial structure of the attractors th…
The zero-temperature XX chain is studied with emphasis on the properties of a block of $L$ spins inside the chain. We investigate the quantum fluctuations resulting from the entanglement of the block with the rest of the chain using analytical as well as numerical (density matrix renormalization group) methods. It is found that the rest of the chain acts as a thermal environment and an effective temperature can be introduced to describe the fluctuations. We show that the effective temperature description is robust in the sense that several independent definitions (through fluctuation dissipati…
We study the mean field dilute model of a ferromagnet. We find and prove an expression for the free energy density at high temperature, and at temperature zero. We find the critical line of the model, separating the phase with zero magnetization from the phase with symmetry breaking. We also compute exactly the entropy at temperature zero, which is strictly positive. The physical behavior at temperature zero is very interesting and related to infinite dimensional percolation, and suggests possible behaviors at generic low temperatures. Lastly, we provide a complete solution for the annealed mo…
We numerically study finite-dimensional spin glasses at low and zero temperature, finding evidences for (i) strong time/space heterogeneities, (ii) spontaneous time scale separation and (iii) power law distributions of flipping times. Using zero temperature dynamics we study blocking, clustering and persistence phenomena.
The locality of correlation functions is considered for Fermi systems at non-zero temperature. We show that for all short-range, lattice Hamiltonians, the correlation function of any two fermionic operators decays exponentially with a correlation length which is of order the inverse temperature for small temperature. We discuss applications to numerical simulation of quantum systems at non-zero temperature.
We give a simple criterion for checking the so called Edwards' hypothesis in certain zero-temperature, ferromagnetic spin-flip dynamics and use it to invalidate the hypothesis in various examples in dimension one and higher.
An approximate method is proposed for investigating complex-temperature properties of real-dimensional spin-glass models. The method uses the complex-temperature data of the ferromagnetic model on the same lattice. The universality line in the complex-temperature space is obtained.
We consider a question motivated by the third law of thermodynamics: can there be a local temperature arbitrarily close to absolute zero in a nonequilibrium quantum system? We consider nanoscale quantum conductors with the source reservoir held at finite temperature and the drain held at or near absolute zero, a problem outside the scope of linear response theory. We obtain local temperatures close to absolute zero when electrons originating from the finite temperature reservoir undergo destructive quantum interference. The local temperature is computed by numerically solving a nonlinear syste…
Here we observe that list coloring in graph theory coincides with the zero-temperature antiferromagnetic Potts model with an external field. We give a list coloring polynomial that equals the partition function in this case. This is analogous to the well-known connection between the chromatic polynomial and the zero-temperature, zero-field, antiferromagnetic Potts model. The subsequent cross fertilization yields immediate results for the Potts model and suggests new research directions in list coloring.
In this article we address the problem of quantum tunneling of a non-Markovian Brownian particle away from thermal equilibrium. We calculate the Kramers escape rate at low temperature (including the zero temperature case) in the Smoluchowski limit (strong friction regime). Our main findings are: (i) our quantum escape rate is valid far from the thermal equilibrium and is non-Markovian, but it becomes Markovian as the correlation time vanishes; (ii) at thermodynamic equilibrium we obtain a non-Markovian quantum rate that predicts a superfluidity phenomenon in the Markovian limit at low and zero…
We examine zero temperature hysteresis in random field XY and Heisenberg models in the zero frequency limit of a cyclic driving field. Exact expressions for hysteresis loops are obtained in the mean field approximation. These show rather unusual features. We also perform simulations of the two models on a simple cubic lattice and compare them with the predictions of the mean field theory.
We study hysteresis in anti-ferromagnetic random-field Ising model at zero temperature. The external field is cycled adiabatically between -$\infty$ and $\infty$. Two different distributions of the random-field are considered, (i) a uniform distribution of width $2Δ$ centered at the origin, and (ii) a Gaussian distribution with average value zero and standard deviation $σ$. In each case the hysteresis loop is determined exactly in one dimension and compared with numerical simulations of the model.
Dephasing of electrons due to the electron-electron interaction has recently been the subject of a controversial debate, with different calculations yielding mutually incompatible results. In this paper we prove, by means of Ward identities, that neither a Coulomb interaction nor a short-ranged model interaction can lead to phase breaking at zero temperature in spatial dimensions d>2.
The order parameter P(q) for disordered systems with degenerate ground-states is reconsidered. We propose that entropy fluctuations lead to a trivial P(q) at zero temperature as in the non-degenerate case, even if there are zero-energy large-scale excitations (complex energy landscape). Such a situation should arise in the 3-dimensional +-J Ising spin glass and in MAX-SAT. Also, we argue that if the energy landscape is complex with a finite number of ground-state families, then replica symmetry breaking reappears at positive temperature.
It is sometimes argued that the unattainability of zero temperature is a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics. Historically, the independence of the unattainability of zero temperature from the second law was proven more than 80 years ago, yet this assertion was repeated in the literature. This assertion naturally leads to a doubt that the unattainability of zero temperature is not equivalent to the Nernst heat theorem. The apparent contradiction between the Nernst heat theorem and residual entropy further complicates the problems of the third law. Totally, the validity of the third…
Zeros of the moment of the partition function $[Z^n]_{\bm{J}}$ with respect to complex $n$ are investigated in the zero temperature limit $β\to \infty$, $n\to 0$ keeping $y=βn \approx O(1)$. We numerically investigate the zeros of the $\pm J$ Ising spin glass models on several Cayley trees and hierarchical lattices and compare those results. In both lattices, the calculations are carried out with feasible computational costs by using recursion relations originated from the structures of those lattices. The results for Cayley trees show that a sequence of the zeros approaches the real axis of $…
The properties of discrete two-dimensional spin glasses depend strongly on the way the zero-temperature limit is taken. We discuss this phenomenon in the context of the Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group. We see, in particular, how these properties are connected with the presence of a cascade of fixed points in the renormalization group flow. Of particular interest are two unstable fixed points that correspond to two different spin-glass phases at zero temperature. We discuss how these phenomena are related with the presence of entropy fluctuations and temperature chaos, and universality in…
We calculate complex-temperature (CT) zeros of the partition function for the $q$-state Potts model on the honeycomb and kagomé lattices for several values of $q$. These give information on the CT phase diagrams. A comparison of results obtained for different boundary conditions and a discussion of some CT singularities are given. Among other results, our findings show that the Potts antiferromagnet with $q=4$ and $q=5$ on the kagomé lattice has no phase transition at either finite or zero temperature.
We study the 3-state square-lattice Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature by a Monte Carlo simulation using the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecký cluster algorithm, on lattices up to $1024 \times 1024$. We confirm the critical exponents predicted by Burton and Henley based on the height representation of this model.
We discuss the zero-temperature hydrodynamics equations of bosonic and fermionic superfluids and their connection with generalized Gross-Pitaevskii and Ginzburg-Landau equations through a single superfluid nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
In the past decade low-temperature Glauber dynamics for the one-dimensional Ising system has been several times observed experimentally and occurred to be one of the most important theoretical approaches in a field of molecular nanomagnets. On the other hand, it has been shown recently that Glauber dynamics with the Metropolis flipping probability for the zero-temperature Ising ferromagnet under synchronous updating can lead surprisingly to the antiferromagnetic steady state. In this paper the generalized class of Glauber dynamics at zero-temperature will be considered and the relaxation into …
We present a class of examples of nearest-neighbour, boubded-spin models, in which the low-temperature Gibbs measures do not converge as the temperature is lowered to zero, in any dimension.
