I review the formalism for gauge-field perturbation theory in noncovariant gauges, particularly the temporal axial gauge. I show that, even at zero temperature, there are complications and it is not known whether a formalism exists for handling these that is correct for all calculations. For thermal field theory in the imaginary time formalism, there are different difficulties, whose solution so far is known only up to lowest order in the coupling $g$.
We study the 3-form gauge theory in the context of generalized BRST formulation. We construct the finite field-dependent BRST (FFBRST) symmetry for such a theory. The generating functional for 3-form gauge theory in noncovariant gauge is obtained from that of in covariant gauge. We further extend the results by considering 3-form gauge theory in the context of Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formulation.
We find non-covariant local symmetries in the Abelian gauge theories. The Nöther charges generating these symmetries are nilpotent as BRST charges, and they impose constraints on the physical states.
A gauge-averaging functional of the axial type is studied for simple supergravity at one loop about flat Euclidean four-space bounded by a three-sphere, or two concentric three-spheres. This is a generalization of recent work on the axial gauge in quantum supergravity on manifolds with boundary. Ghost modes obey nonlocal boundary conditions of the spectral type, in that half of them obey Dirichlet or Neumann conditions at the boundary. In both cases, they give a vanishing contribution to the one-loop divergence. The admissibility of noncovariant gauges at the classical level is also proved.
I study a class of Wilsonian formulations of non-Abelian gauge theories in algebraic noncovariant gauges where the Wilsonian infrared cutoff $Λ$ is inserted as a mass term for the propagating fields. In this way the Ward-Takahashi identities are preserved to all scales. Nevertheless the BRS-invariance in broken and the theory is gauge-dependent and unphysical at $Λ\neq0$. Then I discuss the infrared limit $Λ\to0$. I show that the singularities of the axial gauge choice are avoided in planar gauge and in light-cone gauge. Finally the rectangular Wilson loop of size $2L\times 2T$ is evaluated at…
A new procedure for regularizing Feynman integrals in the noncovariant Coulomb gauge is proposed for Yang-Mills theory. The procedure is based on a variant of dimensional regularization, called split dimensional regularization, which leads to internally consistent, ambiguity-free integrals. It is demonstrated that split dimensional regularization yields a one-loop Yang-Mills self-energy that is nontransverse, but local. Despite the noncovariant nature of the Coulomb gauge, ghosts are necessary in order to satisfy the appropriate Ward/BRS identity. The computed Coulomb-gauge Feynman integrals a…
A new integration technique for multi-loop Feynman integrals, called the matrix method, is developed and then applied to the divergent part of the overlapping two-loop quark self-energy function $\,iΣ\,$ in the light- cone gauge. It is shown that the coefficient of the double-pole term is strictly local, even off mass-shell, while the coefficient of the single-pole term contains local as well as nonlocal parts. On mass-shell, the single-pole part is local, of course. It is worth noting that the original overlapping self-energy integral reduces eventually to 10 covariant and 38 noncovariant- ga…
The complete two-loop correction to the quark propagator, consisting of the spider, rainbow, gluon bubble and quark bubble diagrams, is evaluated in the noncovariant light-cone gauge (lcg). (The overlapping self-energy diagram had already been computed.) The chief technical tools include the powerful matrix integration technique, the n^*-prescription for the spurious poles of 1/qn, and the detailed analysis of the boundary singularities in five- and six-dimensional parameter space. It is shown that the total divergent contribution to the two-loop correction Sigma_2 contains both covariant and …
Supersymmetry and Yang-Mills type gauge invariance are two of the essential properties of most, and possibly the most important models in fundamental physics. Supersymmetry is nearly trivial to prove in the (traditionally gauge-noncovariant) superfield formalism, whereas the gauge-covariant formalism makes gauge invariance manifest. In 3+1-dimensions, the transformation from one into the other is elementary and essentially unique. By contrast, this transformation turns out to be impossible in the most general 1+1-dimensional case. In fact, only the (manifestly) gauge- and supersymmetry-covaria…
We find the probe D5-brane solution on the black home spacetime which is asymptomatically AdS_5 x S^5. These black holes have spherical, hyperbolic and toroidal structures. Depending on the gauge flux on the D5-brane, the D5-brane behaves differently. This By adding the fundamental string, the potential energy of the interface solution and the Wilson loop is given in the case of non zero gauge flux.
We consider vector and axialvector mesons in the framework of a gauged linear sigma model with chiral $U(N_f)_R \times U(N_f)_L$ symmetry. For $N_f=2$, we investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate and the meson masses as a function of temperature by solving a system of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations derived via the 2PI formalism in double-bubble approximation. We find that the inclusion of vector and axialvector mesons tends to sharpen the chiral transition. Within our approximation scheme, the mass of the $ρ$ meson increases by about 100 MeV towards the chiral transition.
Two-dimensional supergravity theory is quantized as an anomalous gauge theory. In the Batalin-Fradkin (BF) formalism, the anomaly-canceling super-Liouville fields are introduced to identify the original second-class constrained system with a gauge-fixed version of a first-class system. The BFV-BRST quantization applies to formulate the theory in the most general class of gauges. A local effective action constructed in the configuration space contains two super-Liouville actions; one is a noncovariant but local functional written only in terms of 2D supergravity fields, and the other contains t…
The spectrum of a massless bulk scalar field Φ, with a possible interaction term of the form -ξR Φ^{2}, is investigated in the case of RS-geometry [1]. We show that the zero mode for ξ=0, turns into a tachyon mode, in the case of a nonzero negative value of ξ(ξ<0). As we see, the existence of the tachyon mode destabilizes the Φ=0 vacuum, against a new stable vacuum with nonzero Φnear the brane, and zero in the bulk. By using this result, we can construct a simple model for the gauge field localization, according to the philosophy of Dvali and Shifman (Higgs phase on the brane, confinement in t…
Gauge fields in the light front are traditionally addressed via the employment of an algebraic condition $n\cdot A=0$ in the Lagrangian density, where $A_μ$ is the gauge field (Abelian or non-Abelian) and $n^μ$ is the external, light-like, constant vector which defines the gauge proper. However, this condition though necessary is not sufficient to fix the gauge completely; there still remains a residual gauge freedom that must be addressed appropriately. To do this, we need to define the condition $(n\cdot A)(\partial \cdot A)=0$ with $n\cdot A=0=\partial \cdot A$. The implementation of this c…
We investigate the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in SU(3) gauge theory and in full QCD as well as in quenched U(1) theory on various lattice sizes. As a measure of the fluctuation properties of the eigenvalues, we study the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution, $P(s)$. We further study lattice QCD at nonzero chemical potential, $μ$, by constructing the spacing distribution of adjacent eigenvalues in the complex plane. We find that in all regions of their phase diagrams, compact lattice gauge theories have bulk spectral correlations given by random matrix theory, which is a…
We apply a simple mean field like variational calculation to compact QED in 2+1 dimensions. Our variational ansatz explicitly preserves compact gauge invariance of the theory. We reproduce in this framework all the known results, including dynamical mass generation, Polyakov scaling and the nonzero string tension. It is hoped that this simple example can be a useful reference point for applying similar approximation techniques to nonabelian gauge theories.
Sufficiently energetic collisions of heavy ions result in the formation of a droplet of a strongly coupled liquid state of QCD matter known as quark-gluon plasma. By using gauge-gravity duality (holography), a model of a rapidly hydrodynamizing and thermalizing process like this can be constructed by colliding sheets of energy density moving at the speed of light and tracking the subsequent evolution. In this work, we consider the dual gravitational description of such collisions in the most general bulk theory with a four-derivative gravitational action containing a dynamical metric and a gau…
Two-dimensional heavy-quark QCD is studied in the light-cone coordinates with (anti-) periodic field boundary conditions. We carry out the light-cone quantization of this gauge invariant model. To examine the role of the zero modes of the gauge degrees of freedom, we consider the quantization procedure in the zero mode and the nonzero mode sectors separately. In both sectors, we obtain the physical variables and their canonical (anti-) commutation relations. The physical Hamiltonian is constructed via a step-by-step elimination of the unphysical degrees of freedom. It is shown that the zero mo…
We investigate the properties of hot and/or dense matter in QCD-like theories with quarks in a (pseudo)real representation of the gauge group using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The gauge dynamics is modeled using a simple lattice spin model with nearest-neighbor interactions. We first keep our discussion as general as possible, and only later focus on theories with adjoint quarks of two or three colors. Calculating the phase diagram in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential, it is qualitatively confirmed that the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition is much highe…
We extend a previous investigation of the QCD phase diagram with heavy quarks in the context of background field methods by including the two-loop corrections to the background field effective potential. The nonperturbative dynamics in the pure-gauge sector is modeled by a phenomenological gluon mass term in the Landau-DeWitt gauge-fixed action, which results in an improved perturbative expansion. We investigate the phase diagram at nonzero temperature and (real or imaginary) chemical potential. Two-loop corrections yield an improved agreement with lattice data as compared to the leading-order…
Progress in the application of the complex Langevin method to full QCD at non-zero chemical potential is reported. The method evades the sign problem which makes naive simulations at nonzero density impossible. The procedure 'gauge cooling' is used to stabilize the simulations at small enough lattice spacings. The method allows simulations also at high densities, all the way up to saturation. Simulations in a systematic hopping parameter expansion are also performed and good convergence is observed, validating the full as well as the expanded simulations.
The complex Langevin method is extended to full QCD at non-zero chemical potential. The use of gauge cooling stabilizes the simulations at small enough lattice spacings. At large fermion mass the results are compared to the HQCD approach, in which the spatial hoppings of fermionic variables are neglected, and good agreement is found. The method allows simulations also at high densities, all the way up to saturation.
We compute the term $\sim g^3$ in the free energy for a $SU(N)$ gauge theory with nonzero holonomy at nonzero temperature. If the holonomy is generated kinematically by the introduction of gauge invariant sources coupled to Polyakov loops, the contribution of charged (off-diagonal) gluons to the free energy at order $g^3$, ${\cal F}^{\left( 3\rm{:c.g.} \right)}$, is singular: ${\cal F}^{\left( 3\rm{:c.g.} \right)} \neq 0 $ without holonomy, but ${\cal F}^{\left( 3 \rm{:c.g.} \right)}= 0$ when the holonomy is nonzero, even infinitesimally. We show that the absence of the charged gluon contribut…
Effective Lagrangian for pure Yang-Mills gauge fields invariant under the standard space-time and local gauge SU(3) transformations is considered. It is demonstrated that a set of twelve degenerated minima exists as soon as a nonzero gluon condensate is postulated. The minima are connected to each other by the parity transformations and Weyl group transformations associated with the color su(3) algebra. The presence of degenerated discrete minima in the effective potential leads to the solutions of the effective Euclidean equations of motion in the form of the kink-like gauge field configurati…
We give analytical and numerical solutions for the zero modes of the Dirac operator in topological SU(2) gauge backgrounds at nonzero chemical potential. Continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is used to systematically derive analytical zero modes for calorons at arbitrary holonomy and, in particular limits, for instantons and dyons (magnetic monopoles). For the latter a spherical ansatz is explored as well. All the zero mode exhibit stronger peaks at the core and negative regions in their densities. We discuss the structure of the corresponding overlap matrix elements. For dis…
In the present paper, we consider a $\left(1 + 1\right)$-dimensional gauge model consisting of two complex scalar fields interacting with each other through an Abelian gauge field. When the model's gauge coupling constants are set equal to zero, the model possesses non-gauged Q-ball and kink solutions that do not interact with each other. It is shown that at nonzero gauge coupling constants, the model possesses the soliton solution describing the system consisting of interacting Q-ball and kink components. The kink and Q-ball components of the kink-Q-ball system have opposite electric charges,…
We study the theta dependence of the spectrum of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the topological term in the Lagrangian, for N>=3 and in the large-N limit. We compute the O(theta^2) terms of the expansions around theta=0 of the string tension and the lowest glueball mass, respectively sigma(theta) = sigma (1 + s_2 theta^2 + ...) and M(theta) = M (1 + g_2 theta^2 + ...), where sigma and M are the values at theta=0. For this purpose we use numerical simulations of the Wilson lattice formulation of SU(N) gauge theories for N=3,4,6. The O(theta^2) coefficie…
We numerically construct the stationary solutions of $SU(2)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. When the $t$ component of $SU(2)$ gauge field is taken to the only nonzero component, we construct a class of counterexamples to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in Einstein-Maxwell theory. However, including a nonzero $ϕ$ component of $SU(2)$ gauge field, we can argue that there is a minimum value $q_W$, when the charge carried by the $ϕ$ component is larger than this minimum value, for sufficiently large boundary electric amplitude $a$, the original count…
The two loop contributions to the chiral vortical conductivity are considered. The Kubo formula together with the anomalous Ward identity of the axial vector current suggest that there may be a nonzero correction to the coefficient of the $T^2$ term of the conductivity.
SU(2) lattice gauge theory with four flavors of quarks is studied at nonzero chemical potential $μ$ and temperature $T$ by computer simulation and Effective Lagrangian techniques. Simulations are done on $8^4$, $8^3 \times 4$ and $12^3 \times 6$ lattices and the diquark condensate, chiral order parameter, Wilson line, fermion energy and number densities are measured. Simulations at a fixed, nonzero quark mass provide evidence for a tricritical point in the $μ$-$T$ plane associated with diquark condensation. For low $T$, increasing $μ$ takes the system through a line of second order phase trans…

Although all interactions in the Standard Model generate nonzero shifts of the vacuum energy and pressure, gravity does not interact with them. Assuming (i) that the reason why it is so breaks down at some scale $M_g$ and that (ii) the instanton-induced shifts at such scale generate the observed cosmological constant, we found that it then should happen at a (surprisingly small) scale $M_g\sim 10^3 TeV$.
We present improved upper and lower bounds for the momentum-space ghost propagator of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the two smallest nonzero eigenvalues (and their corresponding eigenvectors) of the Faddeev-Popov matrix. These results are verified using data from four-dimensional numerical simulations of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in minimal Landau gauge at beta = 2.2, for lattice sides N = 16, 32, 48 and 64. Gribov-copy effects are discussed by considering four different sets of numerical minima. We then present a lower bound for the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Faddeev-Popov matrix i…
Understanding the nontrivial features of light-front QCD is a central goal in current investigations of nonperturbative light-front field theory. We find that, with the choice of light-front gauge with antisymmetric boundary conditions for the field variables, the residual gauge freedom is fixed and the light-front QCD vacuum is trivial. The nontrivial structure in light-front QCD is determined by non-vanishing asymptotic physical (transverse) gauge fields at longitudinal infinity, which are responsible for nonzero topological winding number.
The (2 + 1)-dimensional gauge model describing two complex scalar fields that interact through a common Abelian gauge field is considered. It is shown that the model has a soliton solution that describes a system consisting of a vortex and a Q-ball. This two-dimensional system is electrically neutral, nevertheless it possesses a nonzero electric field. Moreover, the soliton system has a quantized magnetic flux and a nonzero angular momentum. Properties of this vortex-Q-ball system are investigated by analytical and numerical methods. It is found that the system combines properties of topologic…
We construct a Lagrangian of Weyl spinors and gauge fields, which is invariant under the action of equivalent local transformations on the spinor algebra representations. A model of vacuum with a nontrivial gauge strength-tensor setting a scale and spontaneously breaking the gauge symmetry is suggested, so that the leading approximation at low energies is described by the Einstein--Hilbert Lagrangian of gravity. We consider a mechanism for the cancellation of cosmological constant due to a symmetry between the vacuum strength tensor and the tensor dual to it. The appearance of nonzero masses f…
In the deconfined regime of a non-Abelian gauge theory at nonzero temperature, previously it was argued that if a (gauge invariant) source is added to generate nonzero holonomy, that this source must be linear for small holonomy. The simplest example of this is the second Bernoulli polynomial. However, then there is a conundrum in computing the free energy to $\sim g^3$ in the coupling constant $g$, as part of the free energy is discontinuous as the holonomy vanishes. In this paper we investigate two ways of generating the second Bernoulli polynomial dynamically: as a mass derivative of an aux…
In this work we explore the possibility of spontaneous breaking of global symmetries at all nonzero temperatures for conformal field theories (CFTs) in $D = 4$ space-time dimensions. We show that such a symmetry-breaking indeed occurs in certain families of non-supersymmetric large $N$ gauge theories at a planar limit. We also show that this phenomenon is accompanied by the system remaining in a persistent Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) phase at any temperature. These analyses are motivated by the work done in arXiv:2005.03676 where symmetry-breaking was observed in all thermal states for certain C…
The two-loop effective action for the SU(3) gauge model in a constant background field ${\bar A}_0(x,t)=B_0^3T_3+B_0^8T_8$ is recalculated for a gauge with an arbitrary $ξ$-parameter. The gauge-invariant thermodynamical potential is found and its extremum points are investigated. Within a two-loop order we find that the stable nontrivial vacuum is completely equivalent to the trivial one but when the high order corrections being taken into account the indifferent equilibrium seems to be broken. Briefly we also discuss the infrared peculiarities and their status for the gauge models with a nonz…
In the present paper, we continue to study the two-dimensional soliton system that is composed of vortex and Q-ball components interacting with each other through an Abelian gauge field. This vortex-Q-ball system is electrically neutral as a whole, nevertheless it possesses a nonzero electric field. Moreover, the vortex-Q-ball system has a quantized magnetic flux and a nonzero angular momentum, and combines properties of topological and nontopological solitons. We investigate radially and azimuthally excited states of the vortex-Q-ball system along with the unexcited vortex-Q-ball system at di…
We investigate the generation of a gluon screening mass in Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge. We propose a gauge-fixing procedure where the Gribov ambiguity is overcome by summing over all Gribov copies with some weight function. This can be formulated in terms of a local field theory involving constrained, nonlinear sigma model fields. We show that a phenomenon of radiative symmetry restoration occurs in this theory, similar to what happens in the standard nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions. This results in a nonzero gluon screening mass, as seen in lattice simulations.
In the continuum, the single flavor massless Schwinger model has an exact global axial $U(1)$ symmetry in the sector of perturbative gauge fields. This symmetry is explicitly broken by gauge fields with nonzero topological charge inducing a nonzero expectation value for the bilinear $\barψψ$. We show that a lattice formulation of this model, using the overlap formalism to treat the massless fermions, explicitly exhibits this phenomenon. A Monte Carlo simulation of the complete system yields the correct value of the fermion condensate and shows unambiguously that it originates from the sector o…
The (2 + 1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge model consisting of two complex scalar fields interacting through a common Abelian gauge field is considered. It is shown that the model has a solution that describes a soliton system consisting of vortex and Q-ball constituents. This two-dimensional soliton system possesses a quantized magnetic flux and a quantized electric charge. Moreover, the soliton system has a nonzero angular momentum. Properties of this vortex-Q-ball system are investigated by analytical and numerical methods. It is found that the system combines properties of a vortex…
We study the effective matrix model for for gauge fields and fermions on a quantum computer. We use the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) using IBM QISKit for the effective matrix model for SU(2) and SU(3) including fermions in the fundamental representation. For SU(2) we study the effects of finite temperature and nonzero chemical potential. In all cases we find excellent agreement with the classical computation.
We use holography to study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(Nc), in the large-Nc and large-coupling limits, coupled to a single massless (n+1)-dimensional hypermultiplet in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc), with n=3,2,1. In particular, we study zero-temperature states with a nonzero baryon number charge density, which we call holographic matter. We demonstrate that a moduli space of such states exists in these theories, specifically a Higgs branch parameterized by the expectation values of scalar operators bilinear in the hypermultiplet scalars…
We discuss the influence of gravitational effects on the stabilization of the chromomagnetic vacuum. The one-loop effective potential for a covariantly constant SU(2) gauge field in ${\bf S}^2 \times {\bf R}^2$ and ${\bf T}^2 \times {\bf R}^2$ is calculated. A possibility of curvature-induced phase transitions between zero and nonzero chromomagnetic vacua is found ---what is also confirmed through the calculation of the renormalization group (RG) improved effective potential on constant-curvature spaces with small curvature. Numerical evaluation indicates that for some curvatures the imaginary…
Using the construction of D-branes with nonzero $B$ field in the matrix model we give a physical interpretation of the known background independence in gauge theories on a noncommutative space. The background independent variables are identified as the degrees of freedom of the underlying matrix model. This clarifies and extends some recent results about the end point of tachyon condensation in D-branes with a $B$ field. We also explain the freedom in the description which is parametrized by a two form $Φ$ from the points of view of the noncommutative geometry on the worldvolume of the branes,…
In a gauge theory, the gauge invariant Hilbert space is unchanged by the coupling to arbitrary local operators. In the presence of Wilson loops, though, the physical Hilbert space must be enlarged by adding test electric charges along the loop. I discuss how at nonzero temperature Polyakov loops are naturally related to the propagator of a test charge. 't Hooft loops represent the propagation of a test magnetic charge, and so do not alter the physical Hilbert space.
Decomposition of SU(2) gauge field into the monopole and monopoleless components is studied in the Maximal Abelian gauge using Monte-Carlo simulations in lattice SU(2) gluodynamics as well as in two-color QCD with both zero and nonzero quark chemical potential. The interaction potential between static charges is calculated for each component and their sum is compared with the non-Abelian static potential. A good agreement is found in the confinement phase. Implications of this result are discussed.
It has been known for a while that there is spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry in the nonzero charged sectors of quantum electrodynamics due to the infrared problem of soft photons. More recently, it has also been suggested that similar results hold for color transformations in a nonabelian gauge theory. Here we show that an action where a diffeomorphism has been carried out for the part describing hard gauge particles and matter fields can be used to analyze these issues. In addition to rederiving old results in this formalism, we also show that color transformations cannot be unitarily…
Supersymmetric configurations of type II D-branes with nonzero gauge field strengths in general supersymmetric backgrounds with nonzero B fields are analyzed using the kappa-symmetric worldvolume action. It is found in dimension four or greater that the usual instanton equation for the gauge field obtains a nonlinear deformation. The deformation is parameterized by the topological data of the B-field, the background geometry and the cycle wrapped by the brane. In the appropriate dimensions, limits and settings these equations reduce to deformed instanton equations recently found in the context…
In phenomenological models with extra dimensions there is a natural symmetry group associated to a brane universe, -- the group of rotations of normal bundle of the brane. We consider Kaluza-Klein gauge fields corresponding to this group and show that they can be localized on the brane in models with warped extra dimensions. These gauge fields are coupled to matter fields which have nonzero rotation moment around the brane. In a particular example of a four-dimensional brane embedded into six-dimensional asymptotically anti-deSitter space, we calculate effective four-dimensional coupling const…
We propose a generalizing gauge-invariant model of propagating torsion which couples to the Maxwell field and to charged particles. As a result we have an Abelian gauge invariant action which leads to a theory with nonzero torsion and which is consistent with available experimental data.
We find new 1/8-BPS giant graviton solutions in $AdS_5 \times S^5$, carrying three angular momenta along $S^5$, and investigate their properties. Especially, we show that nonzero worldvolume gauge fields are admitted preserving supersymmetry. These gauge field modes can be viewed as electromagnetic waves along the compact D3 brane, whose Poynting vector contributes to the BPS angular momenta. We also analyze the (nearly-)spherical giant gravitons with worldvolume gauge fields in detail. Expressing the $S^3$ in Hopf fibration ($S^1$ fibred over $S^2$), the wave propagates along the $S^1$ fiber.
We study the Green's function of a gauge invariant fermionic operator in a strongly coupled field theory at nonzero temperature and density using a dual gravity description. The gravity model contains a charged black hole in four dimensional anti-de Sitter space and probe charged fermions. In particular, we consider the effects of the spin of these probe fermions on the properties of the Green's function. There exists a spin-orbit coupling between the spin of an electron and the electric field of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. On the field theory side, this coupling leads to a Rashba like di…
It is well known that a weakly coupled U(N) gauge theory on a torus with sides of length L has extra light states with energies of order 1/NL. We show that a similar result holds for gauge theories on M/G where M is any compact Riemannian manifold and G is any freely acting discrete isometry group. As in the toroidal case, this is achieved by adding a suitable nontrivial flat connection. As one application, we consider the AdS/CFT correspondence on spacetimes asymptotic to AdS_5/G. By considering finite size effects at nonzero temperature, we show that consistency requires these extra light st…
