Measurements on a two-dimensional electron system confined to an AlAs quantum well reveal that for a given electron density the valley susceptibility, defined as the change in valley population difference per unit strain, is enhanced as the system makes a transition from partial to full spin polarization. This observation is reminiscent of earlier studies in which the spin susceptibility of AlAs electrons was observed to be higher in a single-valley system than its two-valley counterpart.
We report measurements of the spin susceptibility, $χ\propto g_v g^*m^*$, in an AlAs two-dimensional electron system where, via the application of in-plane stress, we transfer electrons from one conduction-band valley to another ($g_v$ is the valley degeneracy, and $m^*$ and $g^*$ are the electron effective mass and g-factor). At a given density, when the two valleys are equally populated ($g_v=2$), the measured $g^*m^*$ is smaller than when only one valley is occupied ($g_v=1$). This observation counters the common assumption that a two-valley two-dimensional system is effectively more dilute…
We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around Landau level filling factor nu = 3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite Fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By monitoring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.
We report direct measurements of the valley susceptibility, the change of valley population in response to applied symmetry-breaking strain, in an AlAs two-dimensional electron system. As the two-dimensional density is reduced, the valley susceptibility dramatically increases relative to its band value, reflecting the system's strong electron-electron interaction. The increase has a remarkable resemblance to the enhancement of the spin susceptibility and establishes the analogy between the spin and valley degrees of freedom.
We study the magnetic and transport properties of epitaxial graphene films in this letter. We predict enhanced signal of magnetic susceptibility and relate it to the intrinsic valley magnetic moments. There is also an anomalous contribution to the ordinary Hall effect, which is due to the valley dependent Berry phase or valley-orbit coupling.
We calculate the valley degeneracy ($g_v$) dependence of the many-body renormalization of quasiparticle properties in multivalley 2D semiconductor structures due to the Coulomb interaction between the carriers. Quite unexpectedly, the $g_v$ dependence of many-body effects is nontrivial and non-generic, and depends qualitatively on the specific Fermi liquid property under consideration. While the interacting 2D compressibility manifests monotonically increasing many-body renormalization with increasing $g_v$, the 2D spin susceptibility exhibits an interesting non-monotonic $g_v$ dependence with…
We report measurements of the spin susceptibility in dilute two-dimensional electrons confined to a 45$Å$ wide AlAs quantum well. The electrons in this well occupy an out-of-plane conduction-band valley, rendering a system similar to two-dimensional electrons in Si-MOSFETs but with only one valley occupied. We observe an enhancement of the spin susceptibility over the band value that increases as the density is decreased, following closely the prediction of quantum Monte Carlo calculations and continuing at finite values through the metal-insulator transition.
We demonstrate that, in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system confined to an AlAs quantum well and occupying two conduction-band minima (valleys), a parallel magnetic field can couple to the electrons' orbital motion and tune the energies of the two valleys by different amounts. The measured density imbalance between the two valleys, which is a measure of the valley susceptibility with respect to parallel magnetic field, is enhanced compared to the predictions of non-interacting calculations, reflecting the role of electron-electron interaction.
We report on scattering induced valley polarization enhancement in monolayer molybdenum disulfide. With thermally activated and charge doping introduced scattering, our sample exhibits seven? and twelve-folds of improvements respectively. This counter-intuitive effect is attributed to disruptions to valley pseudospin precession caused by rapid modulation of exciton momentum and concomitant local exchange interaction field, at time scales much shorter than the precession period. In contrast, the valley coherence is improved by thermally activated scattering, but not by charge doping induced sca…
We report a new "dip" effect in the Hall resistance, R_{xy}, of a Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor in the quantum Hall effect regime. With increasing magnetic field, the Hall resistance moves from the plateau at Landau filling factor ν=6 directly to the plateau at ν=4, skipping the plateau at ν=5. However, when the filling factor approaches ν=5, the Hall resistance sharply "dives" to the value 1/5(h/e^2) characteristic of the ν=5 plateau, and then returns to 1/4(h/e^2). This is interpreted as a manifestation of the oscillating exchange enhancement of the valley splitting wh…
We theoretically demonstrate that 100\% valley-polarized transport in monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides can be obtained using off-resonant circularly polarized light. By tuning the intensity of the off-resonant light the intrinsic band gap in one valley is reduced, while it is enhanced in the other valley, enabling single valley quantum transport. As a consequence, we predict (i) enhancement of the longitudinal electrical conductivity, accompanied by an increase in the spin-polarization of the flowing electrons, (ii) enhancement of the intrinsic spin Hall effect, toget…
We have realized an AlAs two-dimensional electron system in which electrons occupy conduction-band valleys with different Fermi contours and effective masses. In the quantum Hall regime, we observe both resistivity spikes and persistent gaps at crossings between the Landau levels originating from these two valleys. From the positions of the spikes in tilted magnetic field and measurements of the energy gaps away from the crossings, we find that, after occupation of the minority valley, the spin susceptibility drops rapidly, and the electrons possess a {\it single} interaction-enhanced g-factor…
The 2-D electron system (2DES) in Si metal-oxide field-effect transistors (MOSFETS) consists of two distinct electron fluids interacting with each other. We calculate the total energy as a function of the density $n$, and the spin polarization $ζ$ in the strongly-correlated low-density regime, using a classical mapping to a hypernetted-chain (CHNC) equation inclusive of bridge terms. Here the ten distribution functions, arising from spin and valley indices, are self-consistently calculated to obtain the total free energy, the chemical potential, the compressibility and the spin susceptibility.…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate can exhibit an anomalous Hall effect at 3/4 filling due to the spontaneous valley polarization in valley resolved moiré bands with opposite Chern number [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. It was observed that a small DC current is able to switch the valley polarization and reverse the sign of the Hall conductance [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. Here, we discuss the mechanism of the current switching of valley polarization near the transition temperature, where bulk dissipat…
We show that the optical excitation of graphene with polarized light leads to the pure valley current where carriers in the valleys counterflow. The current in each valley originates from asymmetry of optical transitions and electron scattering by impurities owing to the warping of electron energy spectrum. The valley current has strong polarization dependence, its direction is opposite for normally incident beams of orthogonal linear polarizations. In undoped graphene on a substrate with high susceptibility, electron-electron scattering leads to an additional contribution to the valley curren…
We study the conductivity of disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the incoherent regime by using the Boltzmann equation approach. The band structure of zigzag nanoribbons contains two energy valleys, and each valley has an excess one-way channel. The crucial point is that the numbers of conducting channels for two propagating directions are imbalanced in each valley due to the presence of an excess one-way channel. It was pointed out that as a consequence of this imbalance, a perfectly conducting channel is stabilized in the coherent regime if intervalley scattering is absent. We show tha…
We study the valley-dependent magnetic and transport properties of massive Dirac fermions in multivalley systems such as the transition metal dichalcogenides. The asymmetry of the zeroth Landau level between valleys and the enhanced magnetic susceptibility can be attributed to the different orbital magnetic moment tied with each valley. This allows the valley polarization to be controlled by tuning the external magnetic field and the doping level. As a result of this magnetic field induced valley polarization, there exists an extra contribution to the ordinary Hall effect. All these effects ca…
Using available quantum Monte Carlo predictions for a strictly 2D electron gas, we have estimated the spin susceptibility of electrons in actual devices taking into account the effect of the finite transverse thickness and finding a very good agreement with experiments. A weak disorder, as found in very clean devices and/or at densities not too low, just brings about a minor enhancement of the susceptibility.
Coulomb interaction between electrons lies at the heart of magnetism in solids. In contrast to conventional two-dimensional (2D) systems, electrons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess coupled spin and valley degrees of freedom by the spin-orbit interaction. The electrons are also strongly interacting even in the high-density regime because of the weak dielectric screening in two dimensions and a large band mass. The combination of these properties presents a unique platform for exploring spin and valley magnetism in 2D electron liquids. Here we report an observation by…
Recent experiments have observed correlated insulating and possible superconducting phases in twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides the spin-valley locked moire bands due to the intrinsic Ising spin-orbit coupling, homobilayer moire TMDs also possess either logarithmic or power-law divergent Van Hove singularities (VHS) near the Fermi surface, controllable by an external displacement field. The former and the latter are dubbed conventional and higher-order VHS, respectively. Here, we perform a perturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis to unbiasedly study t…
We report measurements of spin susceptibility of a two-dimensional hole gas confined at an GaAs/AlGaAs interface in density range from 2.8 x 10^10 to 6.5 x 10^10 cm-2. We used the method of spin polarization of carriers in parallel magnetic field. We observed an enhancement of the spin susceptibility over the bulk value that increases as the density is decreased in qualitative agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The measured enhancement factor increases from 2.8 to 4.8 as the hole density is decreased.
We fabricate high-mobility p-type few-layer WSe2 field-effect transistors and surprisingly observe a series of quantum Hall (QH) states following an unconventional sequence predominated by odd-integer states under a moderate strength magnetic field. By tilting the magnetic field, we discover Landau level (LL) crossing effects at ultra-low coincident angles, revealing that the Zeeman energy is about three times as large as the cyclotron energy near the valence band top at Γ valley. This result implies the significant roles played by the exchange interactions in p-type few-layer WSe2, in which i…
We show that Ge concentration oscillations within the quantum well region of a Si/SiGe heterostructure can significantly enhance the spin-orbit coupling of the low-energy conduction-band valleys. Specifically, we find that for Ge oscillation wavelengths near $λ= 1.57~\text{nm}$ with an average Ge concentration of $\bar{n}_{\text{Ge}} = 5\%$ in the quantum well region, a Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling is induced, at all physically relevant electric field strengths, which is over an order of magnitude larger than what is found in conventional Si/SiGe heterostructures without Ge concentration os…
We report measurements of the spin susceptibility in dilute (rs up to 10) AlAs two-dimensional (2D) electrons occupying a single conduction-band valley with an anisotropic in-plane Fermi contour, characterized by longitudinal and transverse effective masses, ml and mt. As the density is decreased, the spin susceptibility is significantly enhanced over its band value, reflecting the role of interaction. Yet the enhancement is suppressed compared to the results of quantum Monte Carlo based calculations that take the finite thickness of the electron layer into account but assume an isotropic effe…
The electrical control of single spin qubits based on semiconductor quantum dots is of great interest for scalable quantum computing since electric fields provide an alternative mechanism for qubit control compared with magnetic fields and can also be easier to produce. Here we outline the mechanism for a drastic enhancement in the electrically-driven spin rotation frequency for silicon quantum dot qubits in the presence of a step at a hetero-interface. The enhancement is due to the strong coupling between the ground and excited states which occurs when the electron wave-function overcomes the…
We propose a valley- and spin-filter based on a normal/ferromagnetic/normal molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) junction where the polarizations of the valley and the spin can be inverted by reversing the direction of the exchange field in the ferromagnetic region. By using a modified Dirac Hamiltonian and the scattering formalism, we find that the polarizations can be tuned by applying a gate voltage and changing the exchange field in the structure. We further demonstrate that the presence of a topological term ($β$) in the Hamiltonian results in an enhancement or a reduction of the charge conduct…
Although silicon is a promising material for quantum computation, the degeneracy of the conduction band minima (valleys) must be lifted with a splitting sufficient to ensure formation of well-defined and long-lived spin qubits. Here we demonstrate that valley separation can be accurately tuned via electrostatic gate control in a metal-oxide-semiconductor quantum dot, providing splittings spanning 0.3 - 0.8 meV. The splitting varies linearly with applied electric field, with a ratio in agreement with atomistic tight-binding predictions. We demonstrate single-shot spin readout and measure the sp…
We numerically study the magnetization of small metallic clusters. The magnetic susceptibility is enhanced for lower electronic densities due to the stronger influence of electron-electron interactions. The magnetic susceptibility enhancement stems mainly from an enhancement of the mass for commensurate fillings, while for non-commensurate fillings its a result of an enhancement of the Landé $g$ factor. The relevance to recent experimental measurements is discussed.
We show that an interlayer exciton condensate doped into a strongly correlated Mott insulator exhibits a remarkable enhancement of the bandwidth of the magnetic excitations (triplons). This triplon is visible in the dynamical magnetic susceptibility and can be measured using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. The bandwidth of the triplon scales with the exciton superfluid density, but only in the limit of strong correlations. As such the triplon bandwidth acts as a probe of exciton-spin interactions in the condensate.
The orbital diamagnetic susceptibility is calculated in monolayer and bilayer graphenes with band gap as well as in three-dimensional Dirac systems. It is demonstrated that the pseudo-spin degree of freedom such as valleys produces paramagnetic susceptibility in an equal manner as the real spin dominating over the Landau diamagnetism. The pseudo-spin paramagnetism explains the origin of a singular diamagnetism which is present only in the band-gap region and disappears rapidly inside the conduction and valence bands.
The lifting of the two-fold degeneracy of the conduction valleys in a strained silicon quantum well is critical for spin quantum computing. Here, we obtain an accurate measurement of the splitting of the valley states in the low-field region of interest, using the microwave spectroscopy technique of electron valley resonance (EVR). We compare our results with conventional methods, observing a linear magnetic field dependence of the valley splitting, and a strong low-field suppression, consistent with recent theory. The resonance linewidth shows a marked enhancement above $T\simeq 300$ mK.
In the present work the possibility of simultaneous localization of two electrons in $Δ^{100}$ and $Δ^{001}$ valleys in ordered structures with Ge/Si(001) quantum dots (QD) was verified experimentally by the electron spin resonance (ESR) method. The ESR spectra obtained for the ordered ten-layered QD structure in the dark show the signal corresponding to electron localization in Si at the Ge QD base edges in $Δ^{100}$, $Δ^{010}$ valleys ($g_{zz}$=1.9985, $g_{in-plane}$=1.999). Light illumination causes the appearance of a new ESR line ($g_{zz}$=1.999) attributed to electrons in the $Δ^{001}$ v…

We have measured circularly polarized photoluminescence in monolayer MoSe2 under perpendicular magnetic fields up to 10 T. At low doping densities, the neutral and charged excitons shift linearly with field strength at a rate of $\mp$ 0.12 meV/T for emission arising, respectively, from the K and K' valleys. The opposite sign for emission from different valleys demonstrates lifting of the valley degeneracy. The magnitude of the Zeeman shift agrees with predicted magnetic moments for carriers in the conduction and valence bands. The relative intensity of neutral and charged exciton emission is m…

We study the momentum alignment of photoexcited carriers and the optical control of valley population in gapless and gapped two-dimensional Dirac materials. The trigonal warping effect leads to the spatial separation of charge carriers belonging to different valleys upon linearly polarized high-frequency photoexcitation. Valley separation in gapped materials can be detected by measuring the degree of circular polarization of band-edge photoluminescence at different sides of the sample or light spot (optical valley Hall effect). We demonstrate that the celebrated Rashba effect, caused by substr…
Two-dimensional (2D) Janus materials hold a great importance in spintronic and valleytronic applications due to their unique lattice structures and emergent properties. They intrinsically exhibit both an in-plane inversion and out-of-plane mirror symmetry breakings, which offer a new degree of freedom to electrons in the material. One of the main limitations in the multifunctional applications of these materials is, however, that, they are usually non-magnetic in nature. Here, using first-principles calculations, we propose to induce magnetic degree of freedom in non-magnetic WSTe via doping w…
The exciton valley dynamics in van der Waals heterostructures with transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers is driven by the long-range exchange interaction between the electron and the hole in the exciton. It couples the states active in the opposite circular polarizations resulting in the longitudinal-transverse splitting of excitons propagating in the monolayer plane. Here we study theoretically the effect of the dielectric environment on the long-range exchange interaction and demonstrate how the encapsulation in the hexagonal boron nitride modifies the exciton longitudinal-transverse s…
We present a theory of the photovoltaic valley-dependent Hall effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semiconductor subject to an intense near-resonant electromagnetic field. Our theory captures and elucidates the influence of both the field-induced resonant interband transitions and the nonequilibrium carrier kinetics on the resulting valley Hall transport in terms of photon-dressed quasiparticles. The non-perturbative renormalization effect of the pump field manifests itself in the dynamics of the photon-dressed quasiparticles, with a quasienergy spectrum characterized by {dynamical gaps $δ_η$ ($η…
We study the hybrid excitations due to the coupling between surface optical phonons of a polar insulator substrate and plasmons in the valley-spin-polarized metal phase of silicene under an exchange field. We perform the calculations within the generalized random-phase approximation where the plasmon-phonon coupling is taken into account by the long-range Fr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$hlich interaction. Our investigation on two hybridized plasmon branches in different spin and valley subbands shows distinct behavior compared to the uncoupled case. Interestingly, in one valley, it is found that while th…
Valley currents and non-local resistances of graphene nanostructures with broken inversion symmetry are considered theoretically in the linear response regime. Scattering state wave functions of electrons entering the nanostructure from the contacts represented by groups of ideal leads are calculated by solving the Lippmann- Schwinger equation and are projected onto the valley state subspaces to obtain the valley velocity fields and total valley currents in the nanostructures. In the tunneling regime when the Fermi energy is in the spectral gap around the Dirac point energy, inversion symmetry…
The Fermi surface of elemental bismuth consists of three small rotationally equivalent electron pockets, offering a valley degree of freedom to charge carriers. A relatively small magnetic field can confine electrons to their lowest Landau level. This is the quantum limit attained in other dilute metals upon application of sufficiently strong magnetic field. Here, we report on the observation of another threshold magnetic field never encountered before in any other solid. Above this field, $B_{\rm{empty}}$, one or two valleys become totally empty. Drying up a Fermi sea by magnetic field in the…
The electronic structure of bilayer graphene under pressure develops very interesting features with an enhancement of the trigonal warping and a splitting of the parabolic touching bands at the K point of the reciprocal space into four Dirac cones, one at K and three along the T symmetry lines. As pressure is increased, these cones separate in reciprocal space and in energy, breaking the electron-hole symmetry. Due to their energy separation, their opposite Berry curvature can be observed in valley Hall effect experiments and in the structure of the Landau levels. Based on the electronic struc…
The role of staggered potential on light-induced spin and pseudo-spin polarization has been investigated in silicene. It has been shown that non-equilibrium spin and pseudo-spin polarizations are emerged in silicene sheet by applying an external perpendicular electric field in the presence of circularly polarized light emission. This electric field results in pseudo-spin resolved states very close to the Dirac points therefore could be considered as a pseudomagnetic field. It has been shown that staggered potential induced spin-valley locking and pseudo-spin resolved bands are responsible for …
Using a powerful homogenization technique, one- and two-dimensional graphene metasurfaces are homogenized both at the fundamental frequency (FF) and second harmonic (SH). In both cases, there is excellent agreement between the predictions of the homogenization method and those based on rigorous numerical solutions of Maxwell equations. The homogenization technique is then employed to demonstrate that, owing to a double-resonant plasmon excitation mechanism that leads to strong, simultaneous field enhancement at the FF and SH, the effective second-order susceptibility of graphene metasurfaces c…
