We show that certain structures and constructions of the Whitham theory, an essential part of the perturbation theory of soliton equations, can be instrumental in understanding the geometry of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. We use the ideas of the Whitham theory to define local coordinates and construct foliations on the moduli spaces. We use these constructions to give a new proof of the Diaz' bound on the dimension of complete subvarieties of the moduli spaces. Geometrically, we study the properties of meromorphic differentials with real periods, and their degenerations.
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
Shape matching represents a challenging problem in both information engineering and computer science, exhibiting not only a wide spectrum of multimedia applications, but also a deep relation with conformal geometry. After reviewing the theoretical foundations and the practical issues involved in this fashinating subject, we focus on two state-of-the-art approaches relying respectively on local features (landmark points) and on global properties (conformal parameterizations). Finally, we introduce the Teichmüller space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g into the realm of multimedia, showi…
We prove arithmetic Riemann-Roch and Hilbert-Samuel type formulae for pointed stable curves. We give applications to volumes of lattices of integral cusps forms for pointed stable curves of genus 0.
We prove an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem for pointed stable curves. We derive consequences for the Selberg zeta function of an open modular curve $Y_{1}(p)$ (resp. $Y_{0}(p)$), for a prime number $p\geq 11$ (resp. congruent to 11 modulo 12).
Given a compact Riemann surface $\bar{X}$ of genus $g$ and a point $q$ on $\bar{X}$, we consider $X:=\bar{X}\setminus\{q\}$ with a basepoint $p\in X$. The extension of mixed Hodge structures, given by the weights -1 and -2, of the mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group (in the sense of Hain) is studied. We show that it naturally corresponds on the one hand to the element $(2g q-2 p-K)$ in $\Pic^0(\bar{X})$, where $K$ represents the canonical divisor, and on the other hand to the respective extension of $\bar{X}$. Finally, we prove a pointed Torelli theorem for punctured Riemann surface…
Let $(X,\,D)$ be an $m$-pointed compact Riemann surface of genus at least $2$. For each $x \,\in\, D$, fix full flag and concentrated weight system $α$. Let $P \mathcal{M}_ξ$ denote the moduli space of semi-stable parabolic vector bundles of rank $r$ and determinant $ξ$ over $X$ with weight system $α$, where $r$ is a prime number and $ξ$ is a holomorphic line bundle over $X$ of degree $d$ which is not a multiple of $r$. We compute the Chen-Ruan cohomology of the orbifold for the action on $P \mathcal{M}_ξ$ of the group of $r$-torsion points in ${\rm Pic}^0(X)$.
We study the Cox ring of the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves, \M_{0,n}, via the closely related permutohedral (or Losev-Manin) spaces. Our main result establishes \binom{n}{2} polynomial subrings of the Cox ring, thus giving collections of boundary variables that intersect the ideal of relations trivially. As applications, we give a combinatorial way to partially solve the Riemann-Roch problem for \M_{0,n}, and we show that all relations in degrees of Cox(\M_{0,6}) arising from certain pull-backs from projective spaces are generated by the Plucker relations.
Let $(C,\bt)$ ($\bt=(t_1,...,t_n)$) be an $n$-pointed smooth projective curve of genus $g$ and take an element $\blambda=(λ^{(i)}_j)\in\C^{nr}$ such that $-\sum_{i,j}λ^{(i)}_j=d\in\mathbf{Z}$. For a weight $\balpha$, let $M_C^{\balpha}(\bt,\blambda)$ be the moduli space of $\balpha$-stable $(\bt,\blambda)$-parabolic connections on $C$ and let $RP_r(C,\bt)_{\ba}$ be the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group $π_1(C\setminus\{t_1,...,t_n\},*)$ with the local monodromy data $\ba$ for a certain $\ba\in\C^{nr}$. Then we prove that the morphism $\RH:M_C^{\balpha}(\bt,\blambda)\righ…
In this paper we study the moduli space of the tropicalizations of Riemann surfaces. We first tropicalize a smooth pointed Riemann surface by a graph defined by its (hyperbolic) pair of pants decomposition. Then we can construct the moduli space of tropicalizations based on a fixed regular tropicalization, and compactify it by adding strata parametrizing weighted contractions. We show that this compact moduli space is also Hausdorff. In the end, we compare this moduli space with the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, establishing a partial order-preserving correspondence between the stratificat…
The behavior near the boundary in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of many functions on the moduli space of pointed Riemann surfaces can be conveniently expressed using the notion of "point-like limit" that we adopt from the string theory literature. In this note we study a function on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces that has been introduced by N. Kawazumi and S. Zhang, independently. We show that the point-like limit of the Zhang-Kawazumi invariant in a family of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces in the direction of any hyperelliptic stable curve exists, and is given by evaluating a com…
We study a pair of dual operads which arise in the study of moduli spaces of pointed genus 0 curves (this duality is similar to that between commutative and Lie algebras). These operads are both quadratic, and even Koszul, and arise in the theory of quantum cohomology.
Let $(X,x_0)$ be any one--pointed compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 3$. Fix two mutually coprime integers $r>1$ and $d$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X$ denote the moduli space parametrizing all logarithmic $\text{SL}(r,{\mathbb C})$--connections, singular over $x_0$, on vector bundles over $X$ of degree $d$. We prove that the isomorphism class of the variety ${\mathcal M}_X$ determines the Riemann surface $X$ uniquely up to an isomorphism, although the biholomorphism class of ${\mathcal M}_X$ is known to be independent of the complex structure of $X$. The isomorphism class of t…
Solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations corresponds to special real sections in the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space -- twistor lines. A question posed by Simpson in 1997 asks whether all real sections give rise to global solutions of the self-duality equations. An affirmative answer would allow for complex analytic procedure to obtain all solutions of the self-duality equations. The purpose of this paper is to construct counter examples given by certain (branched) Willmore surfaces in $3$-space (with monodromy) via the generalized Whitham flow. Though these higher solutions do not give rise…
Let ${mathcal M}_g^n$ be the moduli space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g. Denote by ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ the Deligne-Mumford compactification of ${mathcal M}_g^n$. In the present paper, we calculate the orbifold and the ordinary Euler characteristic of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ for any g and n such that n>2-2g.
Compact Riemann surfaces and their abelian functions are instrumental to solve integrable equations; more recently the representation theory of the Monster and related modular form have pointed to the relevance of $τ$-functions, which are in turn connected with a specific type of abelian function, the (Kleinian) $σ$-function. This paper proposes a construction of $σ$-functions based on the nature of the Weierstrass semigroup at one point of the Riemann surface as a generalization of the construction of plane affine models of the Riemann surface. Because our definition is algebraic, we are able…
Let $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ be the set of $n$-dimensional compact Kahler-Einstein manifolds $(X, g)$ satisfying $Ric(g)= - g$ with volume bounded above by $V$. We prove that after passing to a subsequence, any sequence $\{ (X_j, g_j)\}_{j=1}^\infty$ in $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ converges, in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology, to a finite union of complete Kahler-Einstein metric spaces without loss of volume. The convergence is smooth off a closed singular set of Hausdorff dimension no greater than $2n-4$, and the limiting metric space is biholomorphic to an $n$-dimensional semi-log canonical model w…
A $k$-differential on a Riemann surface is a section of the $k$-th power of the canonical line bundle. Loci of $k$-differentials with prescribed number and multiplicities of zeros and poles form a natural stratification of the moduli space of $k$-differentials. In this paper we give a complete description for the compactification of the strata of $k$-differentials in terms of pointed stable $k$-differentials, for all $k$. The upshot is a global $k$-residue condition that can also be reformulated in terms of admissible covers of stable curves. Moreover, we study properties of $k$-differentials …
This memoir is devoted to the study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces. These are arithmetic counterparts, in the context of Arakelov geometry, of germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces along a projective complex curve. Formal-analytic surfaces provide a natural framework for arithmetic algebraization theorems, old and new. Formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit a rich geometry which parallels the geometry of complex analytic surfaces. Notably the dichotomy between pseudoconvexity and pseudoconcavity plays a central role in their geometry. Our study of formal-analytic arithmetic surf…
