A comparison of the close-to-threshold total cross section for the eta prime production in pp --> pp eta prime and pn --> pn eta prime reactions constitutes a tool to investigate the eta prime meson structure and the reaction mechanism in the channels of isospin I=0 and I=1 and may provide insight into the flavour-singlet (perhaps also into gluonium) content of the eta prime meson. In this contribution we present preliminary results of measurement of the quasi-free production of the eta prime meson in the proton-neutron collisions conducted using the COSY-11 facility.
Based on recent COSY-11 results of measurements of total cross sections for the quasi-free pn-->pn eta reaction we determine the isospin I=0 component of the total cross section for the NN-->NN eta reaction down to the threshold. We show that the energy dependence of the total cross section ratios {σ_{I=0}(pn-->pn eta)}/{σ(pp-->pp eta)} and σ_{I=0}(pn-->pn eta)}/{σ(pn-->d eta)} can be described using the Faldt and Wilkin analitical parametrization of the nucleon-nucleon final state interaction.
Some aspects of the quasi-free production of mesons in the near threshold region are discussed. A method of data analysis used by WASA/PROMICE Collaboration to extract the excitation function for eta production on neutron target is briefly presented. Feasibility of similar study with WASA at COSY is discussed.
The upper limit of the total cross section for quasi-free pn -> pn eta-prime reaction has been determined in the excess energy range near the kinematic threshold. The measurement has been carried out at the COSY-11 detection setup using a proton beam and a deuteron cluster target. The identification of the eta-prime meson has been performed using the missing mass technique. The energy dependence of the upper limit of the cross section is extracted with a fixed proton beam momentum of p_beam}=3.35GeV/c and exploiting the Fermi momenta of nucleons inside the deuteron. The data cover a range of c…
We report on the status of the search for eta-mesic nuclei and the studies of the interaction of the eta meson with nucleons. Recently we have completed the analysis of the new WASA-at-COSY data on the production of the eta meson with polarized proton beam. New results on the analyzing power for the pp->ppeta reaction with more than an order of magnitude improved precision shed a new light on the production mechanism of the eta meson in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Also, the latest results of the search for eta-mesic nuclei are discussed.
We present results on the isospin dependence of the eta-prime production cross section in nucleon-nucleon collisions, as well as the results of comparative analysis of the invariant mass distributions for the pp-->pp eta-prime and pp-->pp eta reactions in the context of the proton-eta and proton-eta-prime interaction. Additionally, the value of the total width of the eta-prime is reported as derived directly from the measurement of the mass distribution and an explanation of the experimental technique used in order to achieve a precision about an order of magnitude better then former experimen…
Due to their short life-time, flavour-neutral mesons cannot be utilized as free secondary beams or targets, and therefore a study of their interaction with nucleons is not possible via direct scattering experiments. This interaction is, however, accessible via its influence on the energy dependence - and on the phase space distributions of the cross sections for reactions in which these mesons are produced. In case of the p p --> p p eta reaction the experimentally determined distributions of the differential cross sections close to the production threshold cannot be described by taking into a…
We have created quasiprojectiles of varying isospin via peripheral reactions of 28Si + 112Sn and 124Sn at 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The quasiprojectiles have been reconstructed from completely isotopically identified fragments. The difference in N/Z of the reconstructed quasiprojectiles allows the investigation of the disassembly as a function of the isospin of the fragmenting system. The isobaric yield ratio 3H/3He depends strongly on N/Z ratio of quasiprojectiles. The dependences of mean fragment multiplicity and mean N/Z ratio of the fragments on N/Z ratio of the quasiprojectile are different …
The production of eta and eta-prime mesons in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions has been investigated at the synchrotrons CELSIUS, COSY and SATURNE. The magnitude and energy dependence of the total cross section as well as the occupation distribution of the phase space serve as observables for investigating the mechanisms underlying the production processes and the interaction of mesons with nucleons. The precise data on the eta and eta-prime creation via the pp --> pp eta(eta-prime) reactions allowed to settle the general features of the eta and eta-prime meson production and revealed the…
Precision data are presented for the break-up reaction, $^2{\rm H}(\vec p,pp)n$, within the framework of nuclear-force studies. The experiment was carried out at KVI using a polarized-proton beam of 190 MeV impinging on a liquid-deuterium target and by exploiting the detector, BINA. Some of the vector-analyzing powers are presented and compared with state-of-the-art Faddeev calculations including three-nucleon forces effect. Significant discrepancies between the data and theoretical predictions were observed for kinematical configurations which correspond to the $^2{\rm H}(\vec p,^2$He$)n$ cha…
Within a transport model we search for potential probes of the isospin dependence of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections. Traditional measures of the nuclear stopping power are found sensitive to the magnitude but they are ambiguous for determining the isospin dependence of the in-medium NN cross sections. It is shown that isospin tracers, such as the neutron/proton ratio of free nucleons, at backward rapidities/angles in nuclear reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is a sensitive probe of the isospin dependence of the in-medium NN cross sections. At forwa…
The first spectroscopy of excited states in 52Ni (Tz=2) and 51Co (Tz=-3/2) has been obtained using the highly selective two-neutron knockout reaction. Mirror energy differences between isobaric analogue states in these nuclei and their mirror partners are interpreted in terms of isospin nonconserving effects. A comparison between large scale shell-model calculations and data provides the most compelling evidence to date that both electromagnetic and an additional isospin nonconserving interactions for J=2 couplings, of unknown origin, are required to obtain good agreement.
New experimental data are presented on the energy dependence of the total cross sections for the np -> d eta and quasi-two-body pp -> pp eta reactions, where the final diproton is detected at very low excitation energy. Differential cross sections of pp -> pp eta away from threshold show the influence of higher partial waves and a partial wave decomposition is attempted.
The analysing power measurements for the p(pol)p -> pp eta reaction studied in this dissertation are used in the determination of the reaction mechanism of the eta meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Measurements have been performed in the close-to-threshold energy region at beam momenta of p(beam)=2.010 and 2.085 GeV/c, corresponding to the excess energies of Q = 10 and 36 MeV, respectively. The experiments were realised by means of a cooler synchrotron and storage ring COSY along with a cluster jet target. For registration of the reaction products the COSY-11 facility has been us…
Based on the Isospin-dependent transport model Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU), effects of the high momentum tail (HMT) of nucleon momentum distribution in colliding nuclei on some isospin-sensitive observables are studied in the semi-central $^{197}\rm {Au}+^{197}\rm {Au}$ reactions at incident beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the nucleon transverse flow, the difference of neutron and proton transverse flows, the nucleon elliptic flow and free neutron to proton ratio are all less sensitive to the HMT, while the isospin-sensitive nucleon elliptic flow difference is clearly a…
Multifragmentation of quasiprojectiles was studied in reactions of 28Si beam with 112Sn and 124Sn targets at projectile energies 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The quasiprojectile observables were reconstructed using isotopically identified charged particles with Z_f <= 5 detected at forward angles. The nucleon exchange between projectile and target was investigated using isospin and excitation energy of reconstructed quasiprojectile. For events with total reconstructed charge equal to the charge of the beam (Z_tot = 14) the influence of beam energy and target isospin on neutron transfer was studied i…
Quantitative information on the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlation (SRC) extracted from recent J-Lab experiments was used in constraining the high-momentum tails of single nucleon momentum distributions in both symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and pure neutron matter (PNM). Its effects on the Equations of State of SNM and PNM as well as the nuclear symmetry energy are investigated. It is found that the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of SRC softens significantly the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities.
In order to isolate the contribution of the nucleon strange electric form factor to the parity-violating asymmetry measured in 4He(\vec e,e')4He experiments, it is crucial to have a reliable estimate of the magnitude of isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) corrections in both the nucleon and 4He. We examine this issue in the present letter. Isospin admixtures in the nucleon are determined in chiral perturbation theory, while those in 4He are derived from nuclear interactions, including explicit ISB terms. A careful analysis of the model dependence in the resulting predictions for the nucleon and nu…
In this talk, we first briefly review the isospin dependence of the total nucleon effective mass $M^{\ast}_{J}$ inferred from analyzing nucleon-nucleus scattering data within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model, and the isospin dependence of the nucleon E-mass $M^{\ast,\rm{E}}_{J}$ obtained from applying the Migdal-Luttinger theorem to a phenomenological single-nucleon momentum distribution in nuclei constrained by recent electron-nucleus scattering experiments. Combining information about the isospin dependence of both the nucleon total effective mass and E-mass, we …
Within two different frameworks of isospin-dependent transport model, i.e., Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU04) and Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport models, sensitive probes of nuclear symmetry energy are simulated and compared. It is shown that neutron to proton ratio of free nucleons, pi-/pi+ ratio as well as isospin-sensitive transverse and elliptic flows given by the two transport models with their "best settings", all have obvious differences. Discrepancy of numerical value of isospin-sensitive n/p ratio of free nucleon from the two models mainly originates …
Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model we study the emission of free nucleons and the nuclear radial flow in central heavy-ion collisions induced by high energy radioactive beams. The midrapidity neutron/proton ratio and its transverse momentum dependence are found very sensitive to the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. The nuclear radial flow, however, depends only weakly on the symmetry energy.
We summarise recent progress in theory and experiment towards understanding etaprime meson interactions with nucleons and nuclei. Highlights include the production mechanism of etaprime mesons in proton-proton collisions close to threshold, the etaprime effective mass shift in nuclei and the determination of the etaprime-nucleon scattering length in free space.
The sensitivities of isospin asymmetry and collision geometry dependencies of participant (overlapping region)- spectator (quasiprojectile and quasitarget region) matter towards the symmetry energy using the isospin quantum molecular dynamical model are explored. Particularly, the difference of the number of nucleons in the overlapping zone to the quasi-projectile-target matter is found to be quite sensitive to the symmetry energy at semiperipheral geometries compared to the individual yield. It gives us a clue that this quantity can be used as a measure of isospin migration. Further, the yiel…
In this work we calculate the energies odd J$^{+}$ states in selectedeven-even nuclei-$^{44}$ Ti $^{52}$ Fe and $^{96}$Cd. Of particularinterest is the fact that in many cases the first T=0 and the first T=1 state are close in energy. Whether the lowest odd J state hasT=0 or T=1 is here considered.
A quantitative understanding of isospin violation is an increasingly important ingredient for the extraction of the nucleon's strange vector form factors from experimental data. We calculate the isospin violating electric and magnetic form factors in chiral perturbation theory to leading and next-to-leading order respectively, and we extract the low-energy constants from resonance saturation. Uncertainties are dominated largely by limitations in the current knowledge of some vector meson couplings. The resulting bounds on isospin violation are sufficiently precise to be of value to on-going ex…
Within two different frameworks of isospin-dependent transport model, effect of nuclear symmetry energy at supradensities on the isospin-fractionation (IsoF) was investigated. With positive/negative symmetry potential at supradensities (i.e., values of symmetry energy increase/decrease with density above saturation density), for energetic nucleons, the value of neutron to proton ratio of free nucleons is larger/smaller than that of bound nucleon fragments. Compared with extensively studied quantitative observables of nuclear symmetry energy, the normal or abnormal isospin-fractionation of ener…
Using an isospin-dependent transport model, we study isospin effects on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. We find that these correlation functions are sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, but not to the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter and the medium dependence of nucleon-nucleon cross sections. This sensitivity is mainly due to effects of nuclear symmetry energy on the emission times of neutrons and protons as well as their relative emission sequence. We also study the vari…
Nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections are evaluated in neutron-rich matter using a scaling model according to nucleon effective masses. It is found that the in-medium NN cross sections are not only reduced but also have a different isospin dependence compared with the free-space ones. Because of the neutron-proton effective mass splitting the difference between nn and pp scattering cross sections increases with the increasing isospin asymmetry of the medium. Within the transport model IBUU04, the in-medium NN cross sections are found to influence significantly the isospin transport in heavy-ion …
The neutron-proton effective $k$-mass splitting in asymmetric nucleonic matter of isospin asymmetry $δ$ and normal density is found to be $m^{*}_{n-p}\equiv(m^{*}_{n}-m^{*}_{p})/m=(0.41 \pm0.15)δ$ from analyzing globally 1088 sets of reaction and angular differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering on 130 targets with beam energies from 0.783 MeV to 200 MeV, and 1161 sets of data of neutron elastic scattering on 104 targets with beam energies from 0.05 MeV to 200 MeV within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model. It sets a useful reference for testing model p…
The isobar model EtaMAID has been updated with new and high precision data for eta and etaprime photoproduction on protons and neutrons from MAMI, ELSA, GRAAL and CLAS. The background is described in a recently developed Regge-cut model, and for the resonance part the whole list of nucleon resonances has been investigated with 21 N* states contributing to eta photoproduction and 12 N* states contributing to etaprime photoproduction. A new approach is discussed to avoid double counting in the overlap region of Regge and resonances. A comparison is done among four newly updated partial waves ana…
Using the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, we derive general expressions for the quadratic and quartic symmetry energies in terms of single-nucleon potentials in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These analytical relations are useful for gaining deeper insights into the microscopic origins of the uncertainties in our knowledge on nuclear symmetry energies especially at supra-saturation densities. As examples, the formalism is applied to two model single-nucleon potentials that are widely used in transport model simulations of heavy-ion reactions.
In recent years, high-accuracy data for pionic hydrogen and deuterium have become the primary source of information on the pion-nucleon scattering lengths. Matching the experimental precision requires, in particular, the study of isospin-breaking corrections both in pion-nucleon and pion-deuteron scattering. We review the mechanisms that lead to the cancellation of potentially enhanced virtual-photon corrections in the pion-deuteron system, and discuss the subtleties regarding the definition of the pion-nucleon scattering lengths in the presence of electromagnetic interactions by comparing to …
Extraction of the nucleon's strange form factors from experimental data requires a quantitative understanding of the unavoidable contamination from isospin violation. A number of authors have addressed this issue during the past decade, and their work is reviewed here. The predictions from early models are largely consistent with recent results that rely as much as possible on input from QCD symmetries and related experimental data. The resulting bounds on isospin violation are sufficiently precise to be of value to on-going experimental and theoretical studies of the nucleon's strange form fa…
We have studied the isoscalar giant quadruple resonance (ISGQR) and the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) in $^{208}$Pb based on an improved isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport approach using an improved isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction. With the isoscalar nucleon effective mass and the nucleon-nucleon cross section which reproduces respectively the excitation energy and the width of the ISGQR strength function, the slope parameter of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass splitting are constrained respectively within $36<L<62$ MeV and $…
The strong interaction effects of isospin- and spin-dependent nucleon-nucleon correlations observed in many-body calculations are interpreted in terms of a one-pion exchange mechanism. Including such effects in computations of nuclear parity violating effects leads to enhancements of about 10%. A larger effect arises from the one-boson exchange nature of the parity non-conserving nucleon- nucleon interaction, which depends on both weak and strong meson-nucleon coupling constants. Using values of the latter that are constrained by nucleon-nucleon phase shifts leads to enhancements of parity vio…
The in-medium Eta-N interaction near and below threshold is constructed from a free-space chirally-inspired meson-baryon coupled-channel model that captures the physics of the N(1535) baryon resonance. Nucleon Pauli blocking and hadron self-energies are accounted for. The resulting energy dependent in-medium interaction is used in self-consistent dynamical calculations of Eta nuclear bound states. Narrow states of width about or less than 2 MeV are found across the periodic table, beginning with A=10, for this in-medium coupled-channel interaction model. The binding energy of the 1s-Eta state …
Spin-isospin excitation of ${}^3$He nucleus by proton-induced charge-exchange reaction, ${}^3\mathrm{He}(p,n)ppp$, at forward neutron scattering angle is studied in a plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA). In PWIA, cross sections of the reaction is written in terms of proton-neutron scattering amplitudes and response functions of the transition from ${}^{3}$He to three-proton state by spin-isospin transition operators. The response functions are calculated with realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models using a Faddeev three-body method. Calculated cross sections agree with available experim…
We investigate the pp --> pp eta and pn --> pn eta reactions within an effective Lagrangian model for laboratory kinetic energies ranging from very close to eta meson production threshold to about 10 GeV. Production amplitudes include contributions from the mechanism of excitation, propagation and decay of N*(1535), N*(1650), and N*(1710) baryonic resonances. The initial interaction between two incoming nucleons is modeled by the exchange of pi, rho, omega and sigma mesons where the vertex parameters are taken to be the same as those used in the previous applications of this model. Parameters …
We investigate the isospin transport with 40,48 Ca+ 40,48 Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, measured with the coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector. Using the quasi-projectile remnant measured with VAMOS and carefully selected light-charged-particles measured in coincidence with INDRA, a reconstruction method is applied to estimate the excited quasi-projectile (QP) on an event-by-event basis. The isospin diffusion is investigated using the isospin transport ratio with the asymmetry $δ$ = (N -- Z)/A of the projectile as an isospin-sensitiv…
The past decade has provided a much clearer picture of the structure of high-momentum components in nucleons, associated with hard, short-distance interactions between pairs of nucleons. Recent Jefferson Lab data on light nuclei suggest a connection between these so-called 'short-range correlations' and the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear environment. In light of this discovery that the detailed nuclear structure is important in describing the nuclear quark distributions, we examine the potential impact of the isospin-dependent structure of nuclei to see at what …
We calculate the properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter based on chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. To this end, we develop an improved normal-ordering framework that allows to include general 3N interactions starting from a plane-wave partial-wave-decomposed form. We present results for the energy per particle for general isospin asymmetries based on a set of different Hamiltonians, study their saturation properties, the incompressibility, symmetry energy, and also provide an analytic parametrization for the energy per particle as a function of density a…
Nucleon-nucleon scattering observables are considered in the context of the large $N_c$ limit of QCD for initial states with moderately high momenta ($p \sim N_c$). The scattering is studied in the framework of the time-dependent mean-field approximation. We focus on the dependence of those observables on the spin and isospin of the initial state which may be computed using time-dependent mean-field theory. We show that, up to corrections, all such observables must be invariant under simultaneous spin and isospin flips ({\it i.e.} rotations through $π/2$ in both spin and isospin) acting on eit…
We present our recent efforts to determine the matrix elements associated with the transition between the nucleon and a nucleon resonance induced by the vector current, which are necessary ingredients for models of neutrino-induced reactions in the resonance region. This is accomplished by making the comprehensive analysis of the data for various meson photo- and electro-production reactions off the nucleon within a sophisticated coupled-channels framework, which is known as the ANL-Osaka dynamical coupled-channels model. We also give a brief introduction to our project for constructing a unif…
The isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions is a fundamental issue in nuclear physics and has broad ramifications in astrophysics. Its uncertainties, especially the difference of neutron-proton interactions in the isosinglet and isotriplet channels, affect significantly the density and momentum dependence of the isovector single-nucleon potential and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlation in neutron-rich matter. Consequently, the neutron-proton effective mass splitting and the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are still rather uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions …
The target-mass number dependence of nucleon-nucleon pairs with short-range correlations is explored in a physically transparent geometrical model within a zero-range approximation. The observed $A$ dependence of 2-nucleon ejection cross sections in $(e,e')$ reactions is found to reflect the mass dependence of nuclear density distributions. A parametrization of this $A$ dependence is given. The $A$ dependence of proton-proton vs.\ proton-neutron pairs relative to $^{12}$C is also analyzed in this model. It can be understood using simple combinatorics without any additional isospin dependence.
Revised analysis of Sigma beam asymmetry for eta photoproduction off the free proton from GRAAL is presented. New analysis reveals a narrow structure near W ~1.685 GeV. We describe this structure by the contribution of a narrow resonance with quantum numbers P_{11}, or P_{13}, or D_{13}. Being considered together with the recent observations of a bump-like structure at W~1.68 GeV in the quasi-free eta photoproduction off the neutron, this result provides an evidence for a narrow (Gamma < 25 MeV) N*(1685) resonance. Properties of this possible new nucleon state, namely the mass, the narrow widt…
