Revised analysis of Sigma beam asymmetry for eta photoproduction off the free proton from GRAAL is presented. New analysis reveals a narrow structure near W ~1.685 GeV. We describe this structure by the contribution of a narrow resonance with quantum numbers P_{11}, or P_{13}, or D_{13}. Being considered together with the recent observations of a bump-like structure at W~1.68 GeV in the quasi-free eta photoproduction off the neutron, this result provides an evidence for a narrow (Gamma < 25 MeV) N*(1685) resonance. Properties of this possible new nucleon state, namely the mass, the narrow width, and the much stronger photocoupling to the neutron, are similar to those predicted for the non-strange member of anti-decouplet of exotic baryons.
We analyse photoproduction of eta mesons off the proton in a gauge-invariant chiral unitary framework. The interaction kernel for meson-baryon scattering is derived from the leading order chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. The recent precise threshold data from the Crystal Ball at MAMI can be described rather well and the complex pole corresponding to the S11(1535) is extracted. An extension of the kernel is also discussed.
We analyse data on forward eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target and extract the eta to gamma gamma decay width utilizing the Primakoff effect. The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature. We provide predictions for future PrimEx experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in order to motivate further studies.
Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a resonant structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Comparison of experimental data with multipole decomposition based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis and including narrow states, suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 15$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}$, $P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.
We describe a new way to access the chiral odd transversity parton distribution in the proton through the photoproduction of lepton pairs on transversely polarized target. The basic ingredient is the interference of the Bethe Heitler or Drell-Yan amplitudes with the amplitude of a process, where the photon couples to quarks through its twist-2 chiral-odd distribution amplitude. This approach permits to scan experimentally the shape of the transversity distribution in a nucleon as well as the photon distribution amplitude.
We present results of a recent work on the reaction mechanism of $ηn$ photoproduction off the neutron in the range of $ \sqrt{s} \approx 1.5 - 1.9$ GeV and discuss the role of various nucleon resonances listed in the Particle Data Group (PDG). We make use of an effective Lagrangian approach combining with a Regge method. The total and helicity-dependent cross sections $σ_{1/2},\,σ_{3/2}$ are computed and the numerical results are in good agreement with the A2 experimental data.
We investigate kaon photoproduction off the neutron target, i.e., $γn \to K^0 Λ$, focusing on the role of nucleon resonances given in the Review of Particle Data Group in the range of $\sqrt{s} \approx 1600 - 2200$ MeV. We employ an effective Lagrangian method and a Regge approach. The strong couplings of nucleon resonances with $KΛ$ vertices are constrained by quark model predictions. The numerical results of the total and differential cross sections are found to be in qualitative agreement with the recent CLAS and FOREST experimental data. We discuss the effects of the narrow nucleon resonan…
We investigate $η$ photoproduction off the neutron target, i.e., $γn \to ηn$, employing an effective Lagrangian method combining with a Regge approach. As a background, we consider nucleon exchange in the $s$-channel diagram and $ρ$- and $ω$-meson Regge trajectories in the $t$ channel. The role of nucleon resonances given in the Review of Particle Data Group in the range of $W \approx 1500 - 2100$ MeV and the narrow nucleon resonance $N(1685,1/2^+)$ is extensively studied. The numerical results of the total and differential cross sections, double polarization observable $E$, and helicity-depen…
We investigate photoproduction of the scalar mesona off the nucleon, using the effective Lagrangians and the Regge approach. We first study $f_0(980)$ photoproduction, replacing the Feynman propagator with the Regge ones for the $ρ$-meson exchange in the $t$-channel. The model parameters are fixed by reproducing the experimental data on the differential cross section. We then apply the same method to $f_0(500)$ or $σ$ photoproduction with the same parameters for the Regge propagator. Since the threshold energy of the $f_0(500)$ production is rather low, $N^*$ resonances, which can decay into t…
We discuss the procedure of extracting the photoproduction cross section for neutral pseudoscalar mesons off neutrons from deuteron data. The main statement is that the final-state interaction (FSI) corrections for the proton and neutron target are in general not equal, but for pi0 production there are special cases were they have to be identical and there are large regions in the parameter space of incident photon energy and pion polar angle, θ^*, where they happen to be quite similar. The corrections for both target nucleons are practically identical for $π_0$ production in the energy range …
We study the reaction mechanism of K*Lambda(1116) photoproduction off the proton target near threshold considering the contributions from nucleon-resonances. Employing the effective Lagrangian method at the tree-level Born approximation, we investigate the role of the D13(2080) and the D15(2200). We found that the D13 plays a crucial role to reproduce the experimental data well in the forward scattering region at low energy. We also present theoretical predictions on the single photon-beam asymmetry as well as the energy and angular dependence for the cross sections of this reaction.
We describe a new way to access the chiral odd transversity parton distribution in the proton through the photoproduction of lepton pairs. The basic ingredient is the interference of the usual Bethe Heitler or Drell-Yan amplitudes with the amplitude of a process, where the photon couples to quarks through its chiral-odd distribution amplitude, which is normalized to the magnetic susceptibility of the QCD vacuum. A promising phenomenology of single and double spin observables emerges from the unusual features of this amplitude.
We investigate the reaction mechanism of $K^0 Λ$ photoproduction off the neutron target, i.e., $γn \to K^0 Λ$, in the range of $W\approx 1.6-2.2$ GeV. We employ an effective Lagrangian method at the tree-level Born approximation combining with a Regge approach. As a background, the $K^*$-Reggeon trajectory is taken into account in the $t$ channel and $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in the $u$-channel Feynman diagram. In addition, the role of various nucleon resonances listed in the Particle Data Group (PDG) is carefully scrutinized in the $s$ channel where the resonance parameters are extracted from the …
A combined analysis of photoproduction data on γp to πN, eta N was performed including the data on K Lambda and K Sigma. The data are interpreted in an isobar model with s--channel baryon resonances and pi, rho,(omega), K, and K^* exchange in the t--channel. Three baryon resonances have a substantial coupling to eta N, the well known N(1535)S_{11}, N(1720)P_{13}, and N(2070)D_{15}. The inclusion of data with open strangeness reveals the presence of further new resonances, N(1840)P_{11}, N(1875)D_{13} and N(2170)D_{13}.
We reinvestigate $K^*Λ(1116)$ photoproduction off the nucleon target, based on an effective Lagrangian approach. We include higher nucleon resonances such as $N(2000)\, 5/2^+$, $N(2060)\,5/2^-$, $N(2120)\,3/2^-$, and $N(2190)\,7/2^-$, of which the data are taken from the 2012 edition of Review of Paritcle Physics, in addition to the $t$-channel diagrams ($K$, $K^*$, and $κ$), the $s$-channel nucleon, and $u$-channel hyperon($Λ$, $Σ$, and $Σ^*$) contributions. We find that the $N(2120)\,3/2^-$ and $N(2190)\,7/2^-$ resonances are essential in describing the new CLAS data for charged $K^*$ photop…
New results on quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron and proton bound in a deuteron target are presented. The $γn \to ηn$ quasi-free cross section reveals a bump-like structure which is not seen in the cross section on the proton. This structure may signal the existence of a relatively narrow ($M\sim 1.68$ GeV, $Γ\leq 30$ MeV) baryon state.
Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time th…
We argue that the STAR data on $J/ψ$ photoproduction in $d+Au$ ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the momentum transfer $t \neq 0$ primarily probes elastic and possibly nucleon-dissociative $J/ψ$ photoproduction on quasi-free nucleons, while being essentially insensitive to expectedly weak nuclear modifications of the gluon distribution in the deuteron. Analyzing the STAR detector capabilities for selection of UPC events, we explore the possibility that the contribution of nucleon-dissociative $J/ψ$ photoproduction is negligibly small and obtain a very good description of the $t$ dependence …
The gamma n -> eta n quasi-free cross section reveals a resonant structure at W ~ 1.675 GeV. This structure may be a manifestation of a baryon resonance. A priori its properties, the possibly narrow width and the strong photocoupling to the neutron, look surprising. This structure may also signal the existence of a narrow state.
The differential cross section for the reaction p(gamma, eta p) has been measured from threshold to 1100 MeV photon laboratory energy. For the first time, the region of the S11(1535) resonance is fully covered in a photoproduction experiment and allows a precise extraction of its parameters at the photon point. Above 1000 MeV, S-wave dominance vanishes while a P-wave contribution is observed whose nature will have to be clarified. These high precision data together with the already measured beam asymmetry data will provide stringent constraints on the extraction of new couplings of baryon reso…
Total and differential cross sections for the reaction p(gamma, eta)p have been measured for photon energies in the range from 750 MeV to 3 GeV. The low-energy data are dominated by the S11 wave which has two poles in the energy region below 2 GeV. Eleven nucleon resonances are observed in their decay into p eta. At medium energies we find evidence for a new resonance N(2070)D15 with (mass, width) = (2068+-22, 295+-40) MeV. At photon energies above 1.5 GeV, a strong peak in forward direction develops, signalling the exchange of vector mesons in the t channel.
Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for the $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Fit of the experimental data based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 25$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}, P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in the quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is <A_||/D> = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +- 0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ …
The cross section for ep -> e b\bar{b} X in photoproduction is measured with the H1 detector at the ep-collider HERA. The decay channel b\bar{b} -> ee X' is selected by identifying the semi-electronic decays of the b-quarks. The total production cross section is measured in the kinematic range given by the photon virtuality Q^2 <= 1 GeV^2, the inelasticity 0.05 <= y <= 0.65 and the pseudorapidity of the b-quarks |eta(b)|,|eta(\bar{b})| <= 2. The differential production cross section is measured as a function of the average transverse momentum of the beauty quarks <P_T(b)> down to the threshold…
Dijet events in photon-proton collisions in which there is a large pseudorapidity separation Delta eta > 2.5 between the two highest E_T jets are studied with the H1 detector at HERA. The inclusive dijet cross sections are measured as functions of the longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and photon which participate in the production of the jets, x_pjet and x_gjet respectively, Delta eta, the pseudorapidity separation between the two highest E_T jets, and E_T^gap, the total summed transverse energy between the jets. Rapidity gap events are defined as events in which E_T^gap is less th…
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross …
