The isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions is a fundamental issue in nuclear physics and has broad ramifications in astrophysics. Its uncertainties, especially the difference of neutron-proton interactions in the isosinglet and isotriplet channels, affect significantly the density and momentum dependence of the isovector single-nucleon potential and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlation in neutron-rich matter. Consequently, the neutron-proton effective mass splitting and the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are still rather uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions especially those involving rare isotopes is a useful tool for probing the isospin dependence of nuclear effective interactions through (1) the neutron-skin in coordinate and proton-skin in momentum of the initial state of colliding nuclei, (2) the density and momentum dependence of especially the isovector nuclear mean-field as well as (3) the isospin dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. Observations of neutron stars especially since GW1710817 have also helped us significantly in understanding the isospin dependence of nuclear effective interactions. {\it We summarize here a review talk on these issues given at the 2021 International Workshop on multi-facets of EOS and Clustering. For details we refer the readers to the original publications and references therein}.
The neutron-proton differential flow is shown to be a very useful probe of the isospin-dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS). This novel approach utilizes constructively both the isospin fractionation and the nuclear collective flow as well as their sensitivities to the isospin-dependence of the nuclear EOS. It also avoids effectively uncertainties associated with other dynamical ingredients of heavy-ion reactions at intermediate energies.
We investigate the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter and its isospin dependence in various spin-isospin $ST$ channels within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach extended to include a microscopic three-body force (TBF). It is shown that the potential energy per nucleon in the isospin-singlet T=0 channel is mainly determined by the contribution from the tensor SD coupled channel. At high densities, the TBF effect on the isospin-triplet T=1 channel contribution turns out to be much larger than that on the T=0 channel contribution. At low densities around and below th…
Pure hadronic compact stars, above a limiting value ($\approx$1.6 M$_\odot$) of their gravitational masses, to which predictions of most of other equations of state (EoSs) are restricted, can be reached from the equation of state (EoS) obtained using DDM3Y effective interaction. This effective interaction is found to be quite successful in providing unified description of elastic and inelastic scattering, various radioactivities and nuclear matter properties. We present a systematic study of the properties of pure hadronic compact stars. The $β$-equilibrated neutron star matter using this EoS …
A mean field calculation for obtaining the equation of state (EOS) for symmetric nuclear matter from a density dependent M3Y interaction supplemented by a zero-range potential is described. The energy per nucleon is minimized to obtain the ground state of symmetric nuclear matter. The saturation energy per nucleon used for nuclear matter calculations is determined from the co-efficient of the volume term of Bethe-Weizsäcker mass formula which is evaluated by fitting the recent experimental and estimated atomic mass excesses from Audi-Wapstra-Thibault atomic mass table by minimizing the mean sq…

Experiments with rare isotopes are shedding light on the role isospin plays in the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter, and isoscaling -an straight-forward comparison of reactions with different isospin- could deliver valuable information about it. In this work we test this assertion pragmatically by comparing molecular dynamics simulations of isoscaling reactions using different equations of state and looking for changes in the isoscaling parameters; to explore the possibility of isoscaling carrying information from the hot-and-dense stage of the reaction, we perform our study in confin…
We discuss fragmentation mechanisms and isospin transport occurring in central collisions between neutron rich systems at Fermi energies. In particular, isospin effects are analyzed looking at the correlations between fragment isotopic content and kinematical properties. Simulations are based on an approximate solution of the Boltzmann-Langevin (BL) equation. An attempt to solve the complete BL equation, by introducing full fluctuations in phase space is also discussed.

In this report we present a selection of new reaction observables in dissipative collisions particularly sensitive to the symmetry term of the nuclear Equation of State (Iso-EoS). We will first discuss the Isospin Equilibration Dynamics. At low energies this manifests via the recently observed Dynamical Dipole Radiation, due to a collective neutron-proton oscillation with the symmetry term acting as a restoring force. At higher beam energies Iso-EoS effects will be see…
Nuclear reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams create a transient state of nuclear matter with high density and appreciable neutron to proton asymmetry. This will provide a unique opportunity to explore novel properties of dense neutron-rich matter and the isospin-dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS). Here we study the $π^-/π^+$ ratio as a probe of the EOS of dense neutron-rich matter.
Within an isospin-dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei, we perform a comparative study of $^{100}Sn+^{124}Sn$ and $^{100}Zn+^{124}Sn$ reactions at beam energies of 30 MeV/A and 400 MeV/A to identify optimal experimental conditions and observables for investigating the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich matter at RIA. Several observables known to be sensitive to the density-dependence of the symmetry energy are examined as a function of impact parameter for both reaction systems. In particular, the strength of isospin transport/diffusion is studied…
The nuclear equation of state (EoS) at high densities and/or extreme isospin is one of the longstanding problems of nuclear physics. In the last years substantial progress has been made to constrain the EoS both, from the astrophysical side and from accelerator based experiments. Heavy ion experiments support a soft EoS at moderate densities while the possible existence of high mass neutron star observations favors a stiff EoS. Ab initio calculations for the nuclear many-body problem make predictions for the density and isospin dependence of the EoS far away from the saturation point. Both, th…
A key question in the physics of unstable nuclei is the knowledge of the $EOS$ for asymmetric nuclear matter ($ANM$) away from normal conditions. We recall that the symmetry energy at low densities has important effects on the neutron skin structure, while the knowledge in high densities region is crucial for supernovae dynamics and neutron star properties. The $only$ way to probe such region of the isovector $EOS$ in terrestrial laboratories is through very dissipative collisions of asymmetric (up to exotic) heavy ions from low to relativistic energies. A general introduction to the topic is …
We employ an isospin dependent version of the QMD transport model to study the influence of the isospin dependent part of the nuclear matter equation of state and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross-sections on the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. We find that the extraction of useful information on the isospin-dependent part of the equation of state of nuclear matter from proton or neutron elliptic flows is obstructed by their sensitivity to model parameters and in-medium values of nucleon-nucleon cross-sections. Opposite to that, neutron-proton elliptic flow difference …
Equation of states (EOS) of the spin-polarized nuclear matter (NM) is studied within the Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism using the realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction. With a nonzero fraction $Δ$ of spin-polarized baryons in NM, the spin- and spin-isospin dependent parts of the HF energy density give rise to the \emph{spin symmetry} energy that behaves in about the same manner as the \emph{isospin symmetry} energy, widely discussed in literature as the nuclear symmetry energy. The present HF study shows a strong correlation between the spin symmetry energy and nuclear symmetry …

We show that in collisions with neutron rich heavy ions at energies around the production threshold K^0 and K^+ yields might probe the isospin dependent part of the nuclearEquation of State (EoS) at high baryon densities. In particular we suggest the K^0/K^+ ratio as a promising observable. Results obtained in a fully covariant relativistic transport approach are presented for central Au+Au collisions in the beam energy range 0.8-1.8~AGeV. The focus is put on the EoS influence which goes beyond the "collision-cascade" picture. The isovector part of the in-medium interaction affects the kaon mu…
High energy heavy-ion collisions are proposed as a novel means to obtain information about the high density ({\rm HD}) behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Within an isospin-dependent hadronic transport model using phenomenological equations of state ({\rm EOS}) for dense neutron-rich matter, it is shown that the isospin asymmetry of the HD nuclear matter formed in high energy heavy-ion collisions is determined mainly by the HD behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental signatures in several sensitive probes, i.e., $π^-$ to $π^+$ ratio, transverse collective flow and its excitation fu…

In this paper we investigate isospin transport mechanisms in semi-peripheral collisions at Fermi energies. The effects of the formation of a low density region (neck) between the two reaction partners and of pre-equilibrium emission on the dynamics of isospin equilibration are carefully analyzed. We clearly identify two main contributions to the isospin transport: isospin diffusion due to the $N/Z$ ratio and isospin drift due to the density gradients. Both effects are sensitive to the symmetry part of the nuclear Equation of State (EOS), in particular to the value and slope around saturation d…
The equation of state (EoS) of asymmetric nuclear matter at high densities is a key topic for the description of matter inside neutron stars. The determination of the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, such as the symmetry energy ($a_{sym}$) and the slope of the symmetry energy ($L_0$) at saturation density, has been exaustively studied in order to better constrain the nuclear matter EoS. However, differently from symmetric matter properties that are reasonably constrained, the symmetry energy and its slope still large uncertainties in their experimental values. Regarding this subject, s…

A phenomenological momentum-independent (MID) model is constructed to describe the equation of state (EOS) for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{\text{\textrm{sym}}}(ρ)$. This model can reasonably describe the general properties of the EOS for symmetric nuclear matter and the symmetry energy predicted by both the sophisticated isospin and momentum dependent MDI model and the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach. We find that there exists a nicely linear correlation between $K_{\mathrm{sym}}$ and $L$ as well as between $J_{0}/K_{0} $…
This article summarizes theoretical predictions for the density and isospin dependence of the nuclear mean field and the corresponding nuclear equation of state. We compare predictions from microscopic and phenomenological approaches. An application to heavy ion reactions requires to incorporate these forces into the framework of dynamical transport models. Constraints on the nuclear equation of state derived from finite nuclei and from heavy ion reactions are discussed.
We present several possibilities offered by the reaction dynamics of dissipative heavy ion collisions to study in detail the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state, $EOS$. In particular we discuss isospin effects on the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, {\it Isospin Distillation}, and on collective flows. We stress the importance of a microscopic relativistic structure of the effective interaction in the isovector channel. The possibility of an {\it early} transition to deconfined matter in high isospin density regions is also suggested. We finally select {\it Eleven} observables, i…
The aim of our work is to develop a unified equation of state (EoS) for nuclear and quark matter for a wide range in temperature, density and isospin so that it becomes applicable for heavy-ion collisions as well as for the astrophysics of neutron stars, their mergers and supernova explosions. As a first step, we use improved EoS for the hadronic and quark matter phases and join them via Maxwell construction. We discuss the limitations of a 2-phase description and outline steps beyond it, towards the formulation of a unified quark-nuclear matter EoS on a more fundamental level by a cluster vir…
This paper overviews various phenomena related to the concept of isospin symmetry. The focus is on N~Z nuclei, which are excellent laboratories of isospin physics. The theoretical framework applied is nuclear Density Functional Theory and its isospin- and angular-momentum projected extensions, as well as symmetry-projected multi-reference models. The topics covered include: isospin impurities, superallowed beta decays, beta-transitions in mirror nuclei, isospin breaking hadronic interactions, mirror and triplet binding energy differences, and isoscalar pairing.
We discuss mechanisms related to isospin transport in central collisions between neutron-rich systems at Fermi energies. A fully consistent study of the isospin distillation and expansion dynamics in two-component systems is presented in the framework of a stochastic transport theory. We analyze correlations between fragment observables, focusing on the study of the average N/Z of fragments, as a function of their kinetic energy. We identify an EOS-dependent relation between these observables, allowing to better characterize the fragmentation path and to access new information on the low densi…
By using the Isospin Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model (IQMD), we study the dependence of nuclear stopping Q_{ZZ}/A and R in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions on system size, initial N/Z, isospin symmetry potential and the medium correction of two-body cross sections. We find the effect of initial N/Z ratio, isospin symmetry potential on stopping is weak. The excitation function of Q_{ZZ}/A and R depends on the form of medium correction of two-body cross sections, the equation of state of nuclear matter (EOS). Our results show the behavior of the excitation function of Q_{ZZ}/A…
Using an explicitly isospin-dependent parametric Equation of State (EOS) for the core of neutron stars (NSs) within the Bayesian statistical approach, we infer the EOS parameters of super-dense neutron-rich nuclear matter from three sets of imagined mass-radius correlation data representing typical predictions by various nuclear many-body theories, i.e, the radius stays the same, decreases or increases with increasing NS mass within $\pm 15\%$ between 1.4 M$_{\odot}$ and 2.0 M$_{\odot}$. The corresponding average density increases quickly, slowly or slightly decreases as the NS mass increases …
We review various theoretical approaches for the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter, relevant for the description of core-collapse supernovae, compact stars and compact star mergers. The emphasis is put on models that are applicable to all of these scenarios. Such EoS models have to cover large ranges in baryon number density, temperature and isospin asymmetry. The characteristics of matter change dramatically within these ranges, from a mixture of nucleons, nuclei, and electrons to uniform, strongly interacting matter containing nucleons, and possibly other particles such as hyperons or …
[Purpose:] We infer the posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) and correlations of nine parameters characterizing the EOS of dense neutron-rich matter encapsulating a first-order hadron-quark phase transition from the radius data of canonical NSs reported by LIGO/VIRGO, NICER and Chandra Collaborations. We also infer the quark matter (QM) mass fraction and its radius in a 1.4 M$_{\odot}$ NS and predict their values in more massive NSs. [Method:] Meta-modelings are used to generate both hadronic and QM EOSs in the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo sampling process within the Bayesian statis…
The equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter, i.e., the thermodynamic relationship between the binding energy per nucleon, temperature, density, as well as the isospin asymmetry, has been a hot topic in nuclear physics and astrophysics for a long time. The knowledge of the nuclear EOS is essential for studying the properties of nuclei, the structure of neutron stars, the dynamics of heavy ion collision (HIC), as well as neutron star mergers. HIC offers a unique way to create nuclear matter with high density and isospin asymmetry in terrestrial laboratory, but the formed dense nuclear matter e…
The influence of the isospin-independent, isospin- and momentum-dependent equation of state (EoS), as well as the Coulomb interaction on the pion production in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions (HICs) is studied for both isospin-symmetric and neutron-rich systems. The Coulomb interaction plays an important role in the reaction dynamics, and strongly influences the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of charged pions. It even leads to the $π^-/π^+$ ratio deviating slightly from unity for isospin-{\it symmetric} systems. The Coulomb interaction between mesons and baryons is als…
Nuclear effective interactions are considered as a vital tool to guide into the region of the high degree of isospin asymmetry and density. We take varieties of parameter sets of the RMF model to show the parametric dependence of the hyperon star properties. We add $ϕ_0$-meson to $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ model. The effects of $ϕ_0$-meson on the equation of state and consequently on the maximum mass of the hyperon star are discussed. Due to the inclusion of $ϕ_0$-meson the threshold density of different hyperon production shift to higher density region. The effects of the hyperon-meson coupling constants on…
The N/Z ratio of free nucleons from collisions of neutron-rich nuclei as a function of their momentum is studied by means of Isospin dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics. We find that this ratio is not only sensitive to the form of the density dependence of the symmetry potential energy but also its strength determined by the symmetry energy coefficient. The uncertainties about the symmetry energy coefficient influence the accuracy of probing the density dependence of the symmetry energy by means of the N/Z ratio of free nucleons of neutron-rich nuclei.
Recent analyses of several isospin effects in heavy-ion reactions have allowed us to constrain the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities within a narrow range. Combined with constraints on the Equation of State (EOS) of symmetric nuclear matter obtained previously from analyzing the elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter is thus partially constrained. Here we report effects of the partially constrained EOS of neutron-rich nuclear matter on the mass-radius correlation, moment of inertia, elliptical deformati…

Nuclear systems under constraints, with high degrees of symmetries and/or collectivities may be considered as moving effectively in spaces with reduced spatial dimensions. We first derive analytical expressions for the nucleon specific energy $E_0(ρ)$, pressure $P_0(ρ)$, incompressibility coefficient $K_0(ρ)$ and skewness coefficient $J_0(ρ)$ of symmetric nucleonic matter (SNM), the quadratic symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$, its slope parameter $L(ρ)$ and curvature coefficient $K_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ as well as the fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(ρ)$ of neutron-rich matter in general …
Taking into account the terrestrial experiments and the recent astrophysical observations of neutron stars and gravitational-wave signals, we impose restrictions on the equation of state (EoS) for isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. Using the relativistic mean-field model with SU(3) flavor symmetry, we investigate the impacts of effective nucleon mass, nuclear incompressibility, and slope parameter of nuclear symmetry energy on the nuclear and neutron-star properties. It is found that the astrophysical information of massive neutron stars and tidal deformabilities as well as the nuclear experim…
We present an overview of microscopical calculations of the Equation of State (EOS) of neutron matter performed using Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We focus to the role of the model of the three-neutron force in the high-density part of the EOS up to a few times the saturation density. We also discuss the interplay between the symmetry energy and the neutron star mass-radius relation. The combination of theoretical models of the EOS with recent neutron stars observations permits us to constrain the value of the symmetry energy and its slope. We show that astrophysical observations are starti…
Isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) effects in the charge radius difference $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ of mirror nuclei are studied using the test example of ${}^{48}$Ca and ${}^{48}$Ni. This choice allows for a transparent study of ISB contributions since paring and deformation effects, commonly required for the study of mirror nuclei, can be neglected in this specific pair. The connection of $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ with the nuclear Equation of State and the effect of ISB on such a relation are discussed according to an Energy Density Functional approach. We find that nuclear ISB effects may shift the estimated value f…
Within the framework of BCS theory and Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model, we employ various microscopic pairing gaps and effective pairing interactions to study pairing effects on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron matter and the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. We find pairing effects may have considerable contributions to the EOS of neutron matter at very low densities ($\lesssim 0.02~\rm{fm}^{-3}$), while only have a small impact on the symmetry energy at subsatruation densities. In addition, the reliability of the parabolic approximation for the isospin asymmetry dependence of nucle…
Magnetic field of rotating pulsar might be so strong that the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star (NS) matter is significantly affected by the spin polarization of baryons. In the present work, the EOS of the spin-polarized nuclear matter is investigated in the nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock formalism, using a realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction with its spin and spin-isospin dependence accurately adjusted to the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results for the spin-polarized nuclear matter. The nuclear symmetry energy and proton fraction are found to increase significantly with th…
Properties of effective interactions in neutron-rich matter are reflected in the medium's equation of state (EOS), which is a relationship among several state variables. Spin and isospin asymmetries play an important role in the energy balance and could alter the stability conditions of the nuclear EOS. The EOS has far-reaching consequences for numerous nuclear processes in both the terrestrial laboratories and the cosmos. Presently the EOS, especially for neutron-rich matter, is still very uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to constrain the EOS, particularly the density dep…

Nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations (SRCs) induce a high momentum tail (HMT) in the single-nucleon momentum distribution function $n_{ǩ}^J(ρ,δ)$ in cold neutron-rich matter. While there are clear experimental evidences that the SRC/HMT effects are different for neutrons and protons and their strengths depend strongly on the isospin asymmetry of finite nuclei mostly based on electron-nucleus scattering experiments, much less is known experimentally about the SRC/HMT effects in the dense neutron-rich matter. To facilitate further explorations of SRC/HMT effects in dense neutron-rich matter …
Based on a microscopic transport model, we study the origin of nonstatistical Intermediate Mass Fragment ($IMF$) production in semicentral heavy ion collisions at the Fermi energies. We show that a fast, dynamical $IMF$ formation process, the {\it neck fragmentation mechanism}, can explain the experimentally observed features: deviations from Viola systematics and anisotropic, narrow angular distributions. It may be regarded as the continuation of the multifragmentation mechanism towards intermediate impact parameters. Its relation to other dynamical mechanisms, the induced fission and the abr…
Characteristics of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) and its importance, in particular for astrophysics, are discussed. Selected observables in nuclear collisions are sensitive to the EOS and can be used to constrain it. For central collisions, these include collective flow asymmetries, subthreshold kaon yields and isospin diffusion. Comparisons between the data and transport theory suggest an energy per nucleon that rises relatively slowly with density for symmetric matter and symmetry energy that rises relatively quickly around the normal nuclear density.
We report on the most recent applications of the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) method. The equation of state (EOS) for pure neutron matter in both normal and BCS phase and the superfluid gap in the low--density regime are computed, using a realistic Hamiltonian containing the Argonne AV8' plus Urbana IX three--nucleon interaction. Preliminary results for the EOS of isospin--asymmetric nuclear matter are also presented.
Large-angle elastic scattering of alpha-particle and strongly-bound light nuclei at a few tens MeV/nucleon has shown the pattern of rainbow scattering. This interesting process was shown to involve a significant overlap of the two colliding nuclei, with the total nuclear density well above the saturation density of normal nuclear matter (NM). For a microscopic calculation of the nucleus-nucleus potential within the folding model, we have developed a density dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on the G-matrix interaction M3Y. Our folding analysis of the refractive 4He, 12C, and 16O…
Properties and structure of neutron stars are determined by the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich stellar matter. While the collective flow and particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have constrained tightly the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter up to about five times the normal nuclear matter density, the more recent experimental data on isospin-diffusion and isoscaling in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies have constrained considerably the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. Although there are still many uncertainties…
