Using Wilsonian methods, we study the renormalization group flow of the Nonlinear Sigma Model in any dimension $d$, restricting our attention to terms with two derivatives. At one loop we always find a Ricci flow. When symmetries completely fix the internal metric, we compute the beta function of the single remaining coupling, without any further approximation. For $d>2$ and positive curvature, there is a nontrivial fixed point, which could be used to define an ultraviolet limit, in spite of the perturbative nonrenormalizability of the theory. Potential applications are briefly mentioned.
We present the construction of the Dirac sigma models by gauging the 2-dimensional nonlinear sigma models, but also including the possibility of nonminimal coupling to the metric sector. We show that for a large variety of possible cases, the minimal coupling to the metric sector is the only nontrivial possibility. In addition, we present the construction of the classical Batalin-Vilkovisky action for the Dirac sigma models. We follow a direct approach in its construction, by requiring it to be a solution of the classical master equation.
We construct on-shell ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ nonlinear sigma models on $SO(2N)/U(N)$ and $Sp(N)/U(N)$ by holomorphically embedding the models in the hyper-Kähler nonlinear sigma model on the cotangent bundle of the Grassmann manifold $T^\ast G_{2N,N}$ in the ${\mathcal{N}}=1$ superspace formalism. We apply the moduli matrix formalism to the mass-deformed nonlinear sigma models on the quadrics to study three-pronged junctions by using a recently proposed diagram method.
We study vacua and walls of the mass-deformed nonlinear sigma model on the Grassmann manifold $G_{N_F,N_C}=\frac{SU(N_F)}{SU(N_C)\times SU(N_F-N_C)\times U(1)}$ and discuss three-pronged junctions for $N_C=1,2,3$ in four dimensions.
We study vacua, walls and three-pronged junctions of mass-deformed nonlinear sigma models on $SO(2N)/U(N)$ and $Sp(N)/U(N)$ for generic $N$. We review and discuss the on-shell component Lagrangians of the ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ nonlinear sigma model on the Grassmann manifold, which are obtained in the ${\mathcal{N}}=1$ superspace formalism and in the harmonic superspace formalism. We also show that the Kähler potential of the ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ nonlinear sigma model on the complex projective space, which is obtained in the projective superspace formalism, is equivalent to the Kähler potential of the…
We study vacua and walls of mass-deformed Kähler nonlinear sigma models on $Sp(N)/U(N)$. We identify elementary walls with the simple roots of $USp(2N)$ and discuss compressed walls, penetrable walls and multiwalls by using the moduli matrix formalism.
We continue the study of nonrelativistic string theory in background fields. Nonrelativistic string theory is described by a nonlinear sigma model that maps a relativistic worldsheet to a non-Lorentzian and non-Riemannian target space geometry, which is known to be string Newton-Cartan geometry. We develop the covariant background field method in this non-Riemannian geometry. We apply this background field method to compute the beta-functions of the nonlinear sigma model that describes nonrelativistic string theory on a string Newton-Cartan geometry background, in presence of a Kalb-Ramond two…
In this work we discuss the dynamical generation of mass in a deformed ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model in a two-dimensional ($D=1+1$) space-time. We introduce the deformation by imposing a constraint that softly breaks supersymmetry. Through the tadpole method, we compute the effective potential at leading order in $1/N$ expansion showing that the model exhibit a dynamical generation of mass to the matter fields. Supersymmetry is recovered in the limit of the deformation parameter going to zero.
