We study the structure of the time evolution of the density matrix in contact with a thermal bath in a standard projection operator sheme. The reduced density matrix of the system in the steady state is obtained by tracing out the degree of freedom of the thermal bath from the equilibrium density matrix of the total system. This reduced density matrix is modified by the interaction, and is different from that of the equilibrium of the system alone. We explicitly calculate the contribution of each term in quantum master equation to the realization of the steady state density matrix, and make clear roles of each term. By making use of the role of each term, the properties of the commonly used quantum master equation are examined.
When a small dynamical system that is initially in contact with a heat bath is detached from this heat bath and then caused to undergo a quasi-static adiabatic processes, the statistical distribution of the system's energy differs from that of an equilibrium ensemble. Subsequent contact of the system with another heat bath is inevitably irreversible, hence the entire process cannot be reversed without a net energy transfer to the heat baths.
Starting from the Liouville-von Neumann equation, under a weak coupling limit we derive the Lindblad master equation for the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a Markov approximation and a rotating wave approximation. We also prove that the steady solution of the Lindblad equation is the canonical distribution independent of the dissipation rate.
In this paper, we address the possibility of generalising the standard analysis of thermal contact between a sample system and a heat bath, by including long range interactions between them. As a concrete example, both system and bath are treated within the long range Ising model. For this model, we derive the equilibrium probability distribution of the energy of the sample system. Equilibrium properties of the system magnetisation and stability of the solutions is discussed. We find existence of a metastable phase below a critical temperature of the bath.
An open quantum system in contact with an infinite bath approaches equilibrium, while the state of the bath remains unchanged. If the bath is finite, the open system still relaxes to equilibrium, but it induces a dynamical evolution of the bath state. In this work, we study the dynamics of open quantum systems in contact with finite baths. We obtain a hierarchy of master equations that improve their accuracy by including more dynamical information of the bath. For instance, as the least accurate but simplest description in the hierarchy we obtain the conventional Born-Markov-secular master equ…
We study relaxational behavior from a highly excited state for a composite system in partial contact with a heat bath, motivated by an experimental report of long-term energy storage in protein molecules. The system consists of two coupled elements: The first element is in direct contact with a heat bath, while the second element interacts only with the first element. Due to this indirect contact with the heat bath, energy injected into the second element dissipates very slowly, according to a power law, whereas that injected into the first one exhibits exponential dissipation. The relaxation …
We propose a nonperturbative quantum dissipation theory, in term of hierarchical quantum master equation. It may be used with a great degree of confidence to various dynamics systems in condensed phases. The theoretical development is rooted in an improved semiclassical treatment of Drude bath, beyond the conventional high temperature approximations. It leads to the new theory a simple modification but important improvement over the conventional stochastic Liouville equation theory, without extra numerical cost. Its broad range of validity and applicability is extensively demonstrated with two…
A Stirling engine made of a colloidal particle in contact with a nonequilibrium bath is considered and analyzed with the tools of stochastic energetics. We model the bath by non Gaussian persistent noise acting on the colloidal particle. Depending on the chosen definition of an isothermal transformation in this nonequilibrium setting, we find that either the energetics of the engine parallels that of its equilibrium counterpart or, in the simplest case, that it ends up being less efficient. Persistence, more than non Gaussian effects, are responsible for this result.
The Ising model doesn't have a strictly defined dynamics, only a spectrum. There are different ways to equip it with a time dependence e.g. the Glauber or the Kawasaki dynamics, which are both stochastic, but it means there is a master equation which can also describes their dynamics. We present a Gluber-type master equation derived from the Redfield equation, where the spin system is coupled to a bosonic bath. We derive a time dependent mean field equation which describes the relaxation of the spin system at finite temperature. Using the fully connected, uniform Ising model the relaxation tim…
We consider a molecular aggregate consisting of $N$ identical monomers. Each monomer comprises two electronic levels and a single harmonic mode. The monomers interact with each other via dipole-dipole forces. The monomer vibrational modes are bilinearly coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. This is a prototypical model for the description of coherent exciton transport, from quantum dots to photosynthetic antennae. We derive an exact quantum master equation for such systems. Computationally, the master equation may be useful for the testing of various approximations employed in theories of…
On the basis of analytical results and molecular dynamics simulations we clarify the nonequilibrium dynamics of a long-range interacting system in contact with a heat bath. For small couplings with the bath, we show that the system can first be trapped in a Vlasov quasi-stationary state, then a microcanonical one follows, and finally canonical equilibrium is reached at the bath temperature. We compare a Langevin mesoscopic thermostat with Hamiltonian reservoirs microscopically coupled with the system and demonstrate the equivalence of the two descriptions. Our identification of the parameters …
We obtain a non-Markovian quantum master equation directly from the quantization of a non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation describing the Brownian motion of a particle immersed in a generic environment (e.g. a non-thermal fluid). As far as the especial case of a heat bath comprising of quantum harmonic oscillators is concerned, we derive a non-Markovian Caldeira-Leggett master equation on the basis of which we work out the concept of non-equilibrium quantum thermal force exerted by the harmonic heat bath upon the Brownian motion of free particle. The classical limit (or dequantization process)…
The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the ordinary Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations for the reduced density matrices of the bath $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and the system $\varrho_{S}(t)$ are written down. A formal solution of the equation for $\varrho_{B}(t)$, having been inserted in the equation for the reduced density matrix of the system, in the 2-nd approximation in interaction yields a very specific extra term in the generalized master equation. This term, being nonlinear in $\varrho_{S}(t)$,…
We investigate the transport of a single excitation through a chain of weakly coupled subunits. At both ends the chain is exposed to baths which are incorporated by means of a master equation in Lindblad form. This master equation is solved by the use of stochastic unraveling in order to obtain excitation profile and current in the steady state. Completely diffusive transport is found for a range of model parameters, whereas signatures of ballistic behavior are observed outside this range. In the diffusive regime the conductivity is rather independent from the strength of the bath coupling and…
The equation for the Wigner function describing the reduced dynamics of a single harmonic oscillator, coupled to an oscillator bath, was obtained by Karrlein and Grabert [Phys. Rev. E, vol. 55, 153 (1997)]. It was shown that for some special correlated initial conditions the equation reduces, in the classical limit, to the corresponding classical Fokker-Planck equation obtained by Adelman [J. Chem Phys., vol. 64, 124 (1976)]. However for separable initial conditions the Adelman equations were not recovered. We resolve this problem by showing that, for separable initial conditions, the classica…
The conditions under which quantum-classical Liouville dynamics may be reduced to a master equation are investigated. Systems that can be partitioned into a quantum-classical subsystem interacting with a classical bath are considered. Starting with an exact non-Markovian equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix, an evolution equation for the subsystem density matrix is derived. One contribution to this equation contains the bath average of a memory kernel that accounts for all coherences in the system. It is shown to be a rapidly decaying function, motivating a Markovian approx…
We derive the exact time-evolution for a general quantum system under the influence of pure phase-noise and demonstrate that for a Gaussian initial state of the bath, the exact result can be obtained also within a perturbative time-local master equation approach already in second order of the system-bath coupling strength. We reveal that this equivalence holds if the initial state of the bath can be mapped to a Gaussian phase-space distribution function. Moreover, we discuss the relation to the standard Bloch-Redfield approach.
We use a scheme of separation of degrees of freedom for a system, in order to produce two systems with finite number of degrees of freedom. Our intent is to measure the energy square relative fluctuation (SRF) of the observable part through the simulation of two simple examples of composed systems, the harmonic oscillator, and the chain of quartic oscillators. We want to test the result found previously by us through the finite heat bath canonical ensemble (cond-mat/0210525), which is an application of Tsallis' statistics. We see that the results found here are in very good agreement with the …
We investigate the velocity dependence of kinetic friction with a model which makes minimal assumptions on the actual mechanism of friction so that it can be applied at many scales provided the system involves multi-contact friction. Using a recently developed master equation approach we investigate the influence of two concurrent processes. First, at a nonzero temperature thermal fluctuations allow an activated breaking of contacts which are still below the threshold. As a result, the friction force monotonically increases with velocity. Second, the aging of contacts leads to a decrease of th…
We generalize the method of third quantization to a unified exact treatment of Redfield and Lindblad master equations for open quadratic systems of n fermions in terms of diagonalization of 4n x 4n matrix. Non-equilibrium thermal driving in terms of the Redfield equation is analyzed in detail. We explain how to compute all physically relevant quantities, such as non-equilibrium expectation values of local observables, various entropies or information measures, or time evolution and properties of relaxation. We also discuss how to exactly treat explicitly time dependent problems. The general fo…
We provide an explicit method for solving general markovian master equations for quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians with linear bath operators. As an example we consider a one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator chain coupled to thermal reservoirs at both ends of the chain. We derive an analytic solution of the Redfield master equation for homogeneous harmonic chain and recover classical results, namely, vanishing temperature gradient and constant heat current in the thermodynamic limit. In the case of the disordered gapped chains we observe universal heat current scaling independent of the ba…
Are Markovian master equations for quantum Brownian motion independent of model assumptions used in the derivation and, thus, universal? With the aim of answering this question, we use a random band-matrix model for the system-bath interaction to derive Markovian master equations for the time evolution of one-dimensional quantum systems weakly coupled to a heat bath. We study in detail two simple systems, the harmonic oscillator and the two-level system. Our results are in complete agreement with those of earlier models, like the Caldeira-Legget model and, in the large-band limit, with the Aga…
We consider an open quantum Fermi-system which consists of a single degenerate level with pairing interactions embedded into a superconducting bath. The time evolution of the reduced density matrix for the system is given by Linblad master equation, where the dissipators describe exchange of Bogoliubov quasiparticles with the bath. We obtain fixed points of the time evolution equation for the covariance matrix and study their stability by analyzing full dynamics of the order parameter.
We demonstrate that the `microscopic' field theory representation, directly derived from the corresponding master equation, fails to adequately capture the continuous nonequilibrium phase transition of the Pair Contact Process with Diffusion (PCPD). The ensuing renormalization group (RG) flow equations do not allow for a stable fixed point in the parameter region that is accessible by the physical initial conditions. There exists a stable RG fixed point outside this regime, but the resulting scaling exponents, in conjunction with the predicted particle anticorrelations at the critical point, w…
We study thermodynamic processes in contact with a heat bath that may have an arbitrary time-varying periodic temperature profile. Within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, and for models of thermo-dynamic engines in the idealized case of underdamped particles in the low-friction regime, we derive explicit bounds as well as optimal control protocols that draw maximum power and achieve maximum efficiency at any specified level of power.
Describing open quantum systems far from equilibrium is challenging, in particular when the environment is mesoscopic, when it develops nonequilibrium features during the evolution, or when the memory effects cannot be disregarded. Here, we derive a master equation that explicitly accounts for system-bath correlations and includes, at a coarse-grained level, a dynamically evolving bath. Such a master equation applies to a wide variety of physical systems including those described by Random Matrix Theory or the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis. We obtain a local detailed balance condition w…
To understand the mechanism allowing for the long-term storage of excess energy in proteins, we study a Hamiltonian system consisting of several coupled pendula in partial contact with a heat bath. It is found that energy storage is possible when the motion of each pendulum switches between oscillatory (vibrational) and rotational (phase-slip) modes. The storage time increases almost exponentially to the square root of the injected energy. The relevance of our mechanism to protein motors is discussed.
At the mesoscale friction occurs through the breaking and formation of local contacts. This is often described by the earthquake-like model which requires numerical studies. We show that this phenomenon can also be described by a master equation, which can be solved analytically in some cases and provides an efficient numerical solution for more general cases. We examine the effect of temperature and aging of the contacts and discuss the statistical properties of the contacts for different situations of friction and their implications, particularly regarding the existence of stick-slip.
We present a general quantum fluctuation theorem for the entropy production of an open quantum system coupled to multiple environments, not necessarily at equilibrium. Such a general theorem, when restricted to the weak-coupling and Markovian regime, holds for both local and global master equations, corroborating the thermodynamic consistency of local quantum master equations. The theorem is genuinely quantum, as it can be expressed in terms of conservation of a Hermitian operator, describing the dynamics of the system state operator and of the entropy change in the baths. The integral fluctua…
In this paper a class of dynamical systems describing expectation variables exactly derived from continuous-time master equations is introduced and studied from the viewpoint of differential geometry, where such master equations consist of a set of appropriately chosen Markov kernels. To geometrize such dynamical systems for expectation variables, information geometry is used for expressing equilibrium states, and contact geometry is used for nonequilibrium states. Here time-developments of the expectation variables are identified with contact Hamiltonian vector fields on a contact manifold. A…
We derive a Lindblad master equation that approximates the dynamics of a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model weakly coupled to a bosonic bath. By studying the time evolution of operators under the adjoint master equation we prove that, for large system sizes, these operators attain their thermal equilibrium expectation values in the long-time limit, and we calculate the rate at which these values are approached. Integrability of the LMG model prevents thermalization in the absence of a bath, and our work provides an explicit proof that the bath indeed restores thermalization. Imposing thermalizat…
We study a generic open quantum system where the coupling between the system and its environment is of an energy-preserving quantum nondemolition (QND) type. We obtain the general master equation for the evolution of such a system under the influence of a squeezed thermal bath of harmonic oscillators. From the master equation it can be seen explicitly that the process involves decoherence or dephasing without any dissipation of energy. We work out the decoherence-causing term in the high and zero temperature limits and check that they match with known results for the case of a thermal bath. Th…
When an open system is contacted with several thermal baths, the entropy produced by the irreversible processes ($dS_{\mathrm{i}}=dS-\sum_α\textđQ_α/T_α$) keeps increasing, and this entropy production rate is always non-negative. But when the system is contacted with some non-thermal baths containing quantum coherence or squeezing, this entropy production formula does not apply. In this paper, we study the increasing rate of the mutual information between the open system and its environment. When the baths are canonical thermal ones, we prove that this mutual information production rate could …
We analyze a simple spin-flip process under the presence of two heat reservoirs. While one flip process is triggered by a bath at temperature $T$, the inverse process is activated by a bath at a different temperature $T ^{\prime}$. The situation can be described by using a master equation approach in a second quantized Hamiltonian formulation. The stationary solution leads to a generalized Fermi-Dirac distribution with an effective temperature $T_e$. Likewise the relaxation time is given in terms of $T_e$. Introducing a spin-representation we perform a Landau expansion for the averaged spin $<…
Based on the Robertson theory the nonlinear dynamics of general Ising systems coupled microscopically to bath systems is investigated leading to two complimentary approaches. Within the master equation approach microscopically founded transition rates are presented which essentially differ from the usual phenological rates. The second approach leads to coupled equations of motion for the local magnetizations and the exchange energy. Simple examples are discussed and the general results are applied to the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model.
We present a framework for simulating relaxation dynamics through a conical intersection of an open quantum system that combines methods to approximate the motion of degrees of freedom with disparate time and energy scales. In the vicinity of a conical intersection, a few degrees of freedom render the nuclear dynamics nonadiabatic with respect to the electronic degrees of freedom. We treat these strongly coupled modes by evolving their wavepacket dynamics in the absence of additional coupling exactly. The remaining weakly coupled nuclear degrees of freedom are partitioned into modes that are f…
We analyze an open quantum system under the influence of more than one environment: a dephasing bath and a probability-absorbing bath that represents a decay channel, as encountered in many models of quantum networks. In our case, dephasing is modeled by random fluctuations of the site energies, while the absorbing bath is modeled with an external lead attached to the system. We analyze under which conditions the effects of the two baths can enter additively the quantum master equation. When such additivity is legitimate, the reduced master equation corresponds to the evolution generated by an…
We investigate the transport of phonons between $N$ harmonic oscillators in contact with independent thermal baths and coupled to a common oscillator, and derive an expression for the steady state heat flow between the oscillators in the weak coupling limit. We apply these results to an optomechanical array consisting of a pair of mechanical resonators coupled to a single quantised electromagnetic field mode by radiation pressure as well as to thermal baths with different temperatures. In the weak coupling limit this system is shown to be equivalent to two mutually-coupled harmonic oscillators…
We provide a rigorous construction of Markovian master equations for a wide class of quantum systems that encompass quadratic models of finite size, linearly coupled to an environment modeled by a set of independent thermal baths. Our theory can be applied for both fermionic and bosonic models in any number of physical dimensions, and does not require any particular spatial symmetry of the global system. We show that, for non-degenerate systems under a full secular approximation, the effective Lindblad operators are the normal modes of the system, with coupling constants that explicitly depend…
A systematic first-order correction to the standard Markov master equation for open quantum systems interacting with a bosonic bath is presented. It extends the Markov Lindblad master equation to the more general case of non-Markovian evolution. The meaning and applications of our `post'-Markov master equation are illustrated with several examples, including a damped two-level atom, the spin-boson model and the quantum Brownian motion model. Limitations of the Markov approximation, the problem of positivity violation and initial slips are also discussed.
We analyse the thermodynamics of a quantum system in a trajectory of constant velocity that interacts with a static thermal bath. The latter is modeled by a massless scalar field in a thermal state. We consider two different couplings of the moving system to the heat bath, a coupling of the Unruh-DeWitt type and a coupling that involves the time derivative of the field. We derive the master equation for the reduced dynamics of the moving quantum system. It has the same form with the quantum optical master equation, but with different coefficients that depend on velocity. This master equation h…
We present an alternative method for describing the evolution of a mode of the quantized electromagnetic field in contact with a finite temperature thermal bath. We use the expansion of the field density operator in terms of coherent states and the related Glauber-Sudarshan $P$-function in phase space. The method allows us to obtain analytical expressions of the system's time-evolved $P$-function without needing to solve the corresponding master equation.
We present an exact expansion of the master equation for an open quantum system. The resulting equation is time local and enables us to calculate clearly defined higher order corrections to the Born-Markov approximation. In particular, we show that non-Markovian terms are of the same order of magnitude as higher order terms in the system-bath coupling. As a result we emphasize that analyzing non-Markovian behaviour of a system implies going beyond Born approximation. Additionally, we address with this approach the initial state problem occurring in non-Markovian master equations.
We study fluctuation theorems for open quantum systems with a non-Markovian heat bath using the approach of quantum master equations and examine the physical quantities that appear in those fluctuation theorems. The approach of Markovian quantum master equations to the fluctuation theorems was developed by Esposito and Mukamel [Phys. Rev. E {\bf73}, 046129 (2006)]. We show that their discussion can be formally generalized to the case of a non-Markovian heat bath when the local system is linearly connected to a Gaussian heat bath with the spectrum distribution of the Drude form. We found by num…
It is very common in the literature to write down a Markovian quantum master equation in Lindblad form to describe a system with multiple degrees of freedom and weakly connected to multiple thermal baths which can, in general, be at different temperatures and chemical potentials. However, the microscopically derived quantum master equation up to leading order in system-bath coupling is of the so-called Redfield form which is known to not preserve complete positivity in most cases. Additional approximations to the Redfield equation are required to obtain a Lindblad form. We lay down some fundam…
An efficient optimal-control theory based on the Krotov method is introduced for a non-Markovian open quantum system with a time-nonlocal master equation in which the control parameter and the bath correlation function are correlated. This optimal-control method is developed via a quantum dissipation formulation that transforms the time-nonlocal master equation to a set of coupled linear time-local equations of motion in an extended auxiliary Liouville space. As an illustration, the optimal-control method is applied to find the control sequences for high-fidelity Z gates and identity gates of …
The Lindblad form guarantees complete positivity of a Markovian quantum master equation (QME). However, its microscopic derivation for a quantum system weakly interacting with a thermal bath requires several approximations, which may result in inaccuracies in the QME. Recently, various Lindbladian QMEs were derived without resorting to the secular approximation from the Redfield equation which does not guarantee the complete positivity. Here we explicitly calculate, in a perturbative manner, the equilibrium steady states of these Lindbladian QMEs. We compare the results with the steady state o…
Understanding nonsecular dynamics in open quantum systems is addressed here, with emphasis on systems with large numbers of Bohr frequencies, zero temperature, and fast driving. We employ the master equation, which replaces arithmetic averages of the decay rates in the open system, with their geometric averages, and find that it can improve the second order perturbation theory, known as the Redfield equation, while enforcing complete positivity on quantum dynamics. The characteristic frequency scale that governs the approximation is the minimax frequency: the minimum of the maximum system osci…

The dynamics of Davydov-Scott monomer in a thermal bath with higher order amide-site's displacement leads to anharmonic oscillation effect is investigated using full-quantum approach and the Lindblad formulation of master equation. The specific heat is calculated based on the thermodynamic partition function using the path integral method. The temperature dependence of the specific heat is studied. In the model the specific heat anomaly as pointed out in recent works by Ingold et.al is also observed. However it is found that the anomaly occurs at high temperature region, and the anharmonic osc…
By introducing a temporal change timescale $τ_{\text{A}}(t)$ for the time-dependent system Hamiltonian, a general formulation of the Markovian quantum master equation is given to go well beyond the adiabatic regime. In appropriate situations, the framework is well justified even if $τ_{\text{A}}(t)$ is faster than the decay timescale of the bath correlation function. An application to the dissipative Landau-Zener model demonstrates this general result. The findings are applicable to a wide range of fields, providing a basis for quantum control beyond the adiabatic regime.
