In this paper we present a general tool to handle the presence of zero dynamics which are asymptotically but not locally exponentially stable in problems of robust nonlinear stabilization by output feedback. We show how it is possible to design locally Lipschitz stabilizers under conditions which only rely upon a partial detectability assumption on the controlled plant, by obtaining a robust stabilizing paradigm which is not based on design of observers and separation principles. The main design idea comes from recent achievements in the field of output regulation and specifically in the design of nonlinear internal models.
This paper deals with the problem of boundary stabilization of first-order n\times n inhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems. A backstepping method is developed. The main result supplements the previous works on how to design multi-boundary feedback controllers to realize exponential stability of the original nonlinear system in the spatial H^2 sense.
In the present article we study the stabilization of first-order linear integro-differential hyperbolic equations. For such equations we prove that the stabilization in finite time is equivalent to the exact controllability property. The proof relies on a Fredholm transformation that maps the original system into a finite-time stable target system. The controllability assumption is used to prove the invertibility of such a transformation. Finally, using the method of moments, we show in a particular case that the controllability is reduced to the criterion of Fattorini.
In this paper, we study the boundary feedback stabilization of a quasilinear hyperbolic system with partially dissipative structure. Thanks to this structure, we construct a suitable Lyapunov function which leads to the exponential stability to the equilibrium of the $H^2$ solution. As an application, we also obtain the feedback stabilization for the Saint-Venant-Exner model under physical boundary conditions.
Hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space are frequently used in modeling of many physical systems. In our recent works, we introduced time independent feedbacks leading to the finite stabilization for the optimal time of homogeneous linear and quasilinear hyperbolic systems. In this work, we present Lyapunov's functions for these feedbacks and use estimates for Lyapunov's functions to rediscover the finite stabilization results.
This paper is devoted to a simple and new proof on the optimal finite control time for general linear coupled hyperbolic system by using boundary feedback on one side. The feedback control law is designed by first using a Volterra transformation of the second kind and then using an invertible Fredholm transformation. Both existence and invertibility of the transformations are easily obtained.
We consider the finite-time stabilization of homogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one side controls and with nonlinear boundary condition at the other side. We present time-independent feedbacks leading to the finite-time stabilization in any time larger than the optimal time for the null controllability of the linearized system if the initial condition is sufficiently small. One of the key technical points is to establish the local well-posedness of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear, non-local boundary conditions.
In this paper, we study the stabilization problem for a hyperbolic type Stokes system posed on a bounded domain. We show that when the damping effects are restricted to a subdomain satisfying the geometrical control condition the system decays exponentially. The result is a consequence of a new quasi-mode estimate for the Stokes system.
In this work, we consider the problem of boundary stabilization for a quasilinear 2X2 system of first-order hyperbolic PDEs. We design a new full-state feedback control law, with actuation on only one end of the domain, which achieves H^2 exponential stability of the closedloop system. Our proof uses a backstepping transformation to find new variables for which a strict Lyapunov function can be constructed. The kernels of the transformation are found to verify a Goursat-type 4X4 system of first-order hyperbolic PDEs, whose well-posedness is shown using the method of characteristics and success…
We consider the problem of boundary feedback control of single-input-single-output (SISO) one-dimensional linear hyperbolic systems when sensing and actuation are anti-located. The main issue of the output feedback stabilization is that it requires dynamic control laws that include delayed values of the output (directly or through state observers) which may not be robust to infinitesimal uncertainties on the characteristic velocities. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some features of this problem by addressing the feedback stabilization of an unstable open-loop system which is made up…
This paper deals with mathematical models of continuous crystallization described by hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations coupled with ordinary and integro-differential equations. The considered systems admit nonzero steady-state solutions with constant inputs. To stabilize these solutions, we present an approach for constructing control Lyapunov functionals based on quadratic forms in weighted L2-spaces. It is shown that the proposed control design scheme guarantees exponential stability of the closed-loop system.

In this paper, we discuss our recent works on the null-controllability, the exact controllability, and the stabilization of linear hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space using boundary controls on one side for the optimal time. Under precise and generic assumptions on the boundary conditions on the other side, we first obtain the optimal time for the null and the exact controllability for these systems for a generic source term. We then prove the null-controllability and the exact controllability for any time greater than the optimal time and for any source term. Finally, for homogeneous …
Research on stabilization of coupled hyperbolic PDEs has been dominated by the focus on pairs of counter-convecting ("heterodirectional") transport PDEs with distributed local coupling and with controls at one or both boundaries. A recent extension allows stabilization using only one control for a system containing an arbitrary number of coupled transport PDEs that convect at different speeds against the direction of the PDE whose boundary is actuated. In this paper we present a solution to the fully general case, in which the number of PDEs in either direction is arbitrary, and where actuatio…
Necessary conditions for asymptotic stability and stabilizability of subsets for dynamical and control systems are obtained. The main necessary condition is homotopical and is in turn used to obtain a homological one. A certain extension is ruled out. Questions are posed.
In this work, we investigate the state stabilization and trajectory tracking problems of underactuated surface ships with full state model of having non-diagonal inertia and damping matrices. By combining the novel state transformations, the direct Lyapunov approach, and the nonlinear time-varying tools, the stabilization and the trajectory tracking controllers are developed respectively guaranteeing global uniform asymptotic convergence of the state to the desired set point and global exponential convergence to the desired reference trajectory via mild persistent exciting conditions. Simulati…
In this paper we consider scalar conservation laws with a convex flux. Given a stationnary shock, we provide a feedback law acting at one boundary point such that this solution is now asymptotically stable in L 1-norm in the class of entropy solution.
A mathematical model of a simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with attached spring-mass system is considered. The model is controlled by distributed piezo actuators and lumped force. We address the issue of asymptotic behavior of solutions of this system driven by a linear feedback law. The precompactness of trajectories is established for the operator formulation of the closed-loop dynamics. Sufficient conditions for strong asymptotic stability of the trivial equilibrium are obtained.
We study nonlinear systems with observation errors. The main problem addressed in this paper is the design of feedbacks for globally asymptotically controllable (GAC) control affine systems that render the closed loop systems input to state stable with respect to actuator errors. Extensions for fully nonlinear GAC systems with actuator errors are also discussed.
Sufficient conditions are established for sampled-data feedback global asymptotic stabilization for nonlinear autonomous systems. One of our main results is an extension of the well known Artstein-Sontag theorem on feedback stabilization concerning affine in the control systems. A second aim of the present work is to provide sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback asymptotic stabilization for two interconnected nonlinear systems. Lie algebraic sufficient conditions are derived for the case of affine in the control interconnected systems without drift terms.
This paper deals with an analysis and design of robust, state-feedback control law uniform-asymptotically stabilizing at origin the system consisting of coupled $n$th--order ordinary differential equations in the presence of a non-vanishing at $x=0$ or even unbounded on the time interval $[0,\infty)$ time-varying high-frequency oscillating perturbation $w(t,x).$ The obtained results generalize and extend some known and now classical results in the control theory for a wider class of perturbations. Moreover, as is shown in the paper, there is no room for further generalization for $w$ which is …
It is well known from the seminal Brockett's theorem that the openness property of the mapping on the right-hand side of a given nonlinear ODE control system is a necessary condition for the existence of locally asymptotically stabilizing continuous stationary feedback laws. However, this condition fails to be sufficient for such a feedback stabilization. In this paper we develop an approach of variational analysis to continuous feedback stabilization of nonlinear control systems with replacing openness by the linear openness property, which has been well understood and characterized in variat…
We aim at providing a characterization of the ability to maintain a stochastic coupled system with porous media components in a prescribed set of constraints by using internal controls. This property is proven via a quasi-tangency local-in-time condition in the spirit of Euler approximation schemes. In particular, by employing one of the components of the system as asymptotic supervisor, we give conditions guaranteeing the exponential asymptotic stabilizability of controlled porous media equations.
The paper addresses the stabilization of nonlinear systems with semi-quadratic cost: quadratic with respect to controls and nonlinear for state variables. Paper presents the effective new feedback synthesis procedure. The novel feedback design procedure is based on the ideas borrowed from nonlinear optics and the theory of semi-classical asymptotics.
