The quantum worldsheet dynamics of vortex strings contains information about the 4d non-Abelian gauge theory in which the string lives. Here I tell this story. The string worldsheet theory is typically some variant of the CP^{N-1} sigma-model, describing the orientation of the string in a U(N) gauge group. Qualitative parallels between 2d sigma-models and 4d non-Abelian gauge theories have been known since the 1970s. The vortex string provides a quantitative link between the two. In 4d theories with N=2 supersymmetry, the exact BPS spectrum of the worldsheet coincides with the bulk spectrum in 4d. Moreover, by tuning parameters, the CP^{N-1} sigma-model can be coaxed to flow to an interacting conformal fixed point which is related to the 4d Argyres-Douglas fixed point. For theories with N=1 supersymmetry, the worldsheet theory suffers dynamical supersymmetry breaking and, more interestingly, supersymmetry restoration, in a way which captures the physics of Seiberg's quantum deformed moduli space.
We construct a classical vortex string solution in a Seiberg-dual theory of N=1 supersymmetric SO(N_c) QCD which flows to a confining phase. We claim that this vortex string is a QCD string, as previouly argued by M.Strassler. In SO(N_c) QCD, it is known that stable QCD strings exist even in the presence of dynamical quarks. We show that our vortex strings are stable in the Seiberg-dual theory.
We calculate one- and two-point correlators of winding operators in the matrix model of 2D string theory compactified on a circle, recently proposed for the description of string dynamics on the 2D black hole background.
We study the low-energy dynamics of semi-classical vortex strings living above Argyres-Douglas superconformal field theories. The worldsheet theory of the string is shown to be a deformation of the CP^N model which flows in the infra-red to a superconformal minimal model. The scaling dimensions of chiral primary operators are determined and the dimensions of the associated relevant perturbations on the worldsheet and in the four dimensional bulk are found to agree. The vortex string thereby provides a map between the A-series of N=2 superconformal theories in two and four dimensions.
We generalize the Lund-Regge model for vortex string dynamics in 4-dimensional Minkowski space to the arbitrary n-dimensional case. The n-dimensional vortex equation is identified with a nonabelian sine-Gordon equation and its integrability is proven by finding the associated linear equations of the inverse scattering. An explicit expression of vortex coordinates in terms of the variables of the nonabelian sine-Gordon system is derived. In particular, we obtain the n-dimensional vortex soliton solution of the Hasimoto-type from the one soliton solution of the nonabelian sine-Gordon equation.
Dyonic non-Abelian local/semi-global vortex strings are studied in detail in supersymmetric/non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theories. While the BPS tension formula is known to be the same as that for the BPS dyonic instanton, we find that the non-BPS tension formula is approximated very well by the well-known tension formula of the BPS dyon. We show that this mysterious tension formula for the dyonic non-BPS vortex stings can be understood from the perspective of a low energy effective field theory. Furthermore, we propose an efficient method to obtain an effective theory of a single vorte…
We study the quantum dynamics of vortex strings in N=1 SQCD with U(N_c) gauge group and N_f=N_c quarks. The classical worldsheet of the string has N=(0,2) supersymmetry, but this is broken by quantum effects. We show how the pattern of supersymmetry breaking and restoration on the worldsheet captures the quantum dynamics of the underlying 4d theory. We also find qualitative matching of the meson spectrum in 4d and the spectrum on the worldsheet.
We study the low-energy quantum dynamics of vortex strings in the Higgs phase of N=2 supersymmetric QCD. The exact BPS spectrum of the stretched string is shown to coincide with the BPS spectrum of the four-dimensional parent gauge theory. Perturbative string excitations correspond to bound W-bosons and quarks while the monopoles appear as kinks on the vortex string. This provides a physical explanation for an observation by N. Dorey relating the quantum spectra of theories in two and four dimensions.
Based on a model of the d=3 SU(2) pure gauge theory vacuum as a monopole-vortex condensate, we give a quantitative (if model-dependent) estimate of the relation between the string tension and a gauge-invariant measure of the Chern-Simons susceptibility, due to vortex linkages, in the absence of a Chern-Simons term in the action. We also give relations among these quantities and the vacuum energy and gauge-boson mass. Both the susceptibility and the string tension come from the same physics: The topology of linking, twisting, and writhing of closed vortex strings. The closed-vortex string is de…
We discuss the effective string theory of vortex lines in ordinary fluids and low-temperature superfluids, by describing the bulk fluid flow in terms of a two-form field to which vortex lines can couple. We derive the most general low-energy effective Lagrangian that is compatible with (spontaneously broken) Poincare invariance and worldsheet reparameterization invariance. This generalizes the effective action developed by Lund and Regge and by Endlich and Nicolis. By applying standard field-theoretical techniques, we show that certain low-energy coupling constants -- most notably the string t…
In a class of non-Abelian solitonic vortex strings supported in certain N=2 super-Yang-Mills theories we search for the vortex which can behave as a critical fundamental string. We use the Polchinski-Strominger criterion of the ultraviolet completeness. We identify an appropriate four-dimensional bulk theory: it has the U(2) gauge group, the Fayet-Iliopoulos term and four flavor hypermultiplets. It supports semilocal vortices with the world-sheet theory for orientational (size) moduli described by the weighted CP(2,2) model. The latter is superconformal. Its target space is six-dimensional. Th…
We correct two errors in our previous computation of one-loop corrections to the vortex string tension: (i) the contribution of the longitudinal and timelike modes of the gauge fields were forgotten and are included now; (ii) a trivial error in the numerical code has led to considerable errors in the subtracted integrals. We here present the corrected results.
We discuss dual formulations of vortex strings (magnetic flux tubes) in the four-dimensional ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetric Abelian Higgs model with the Fayet--Iliopoulos term in the superspace formalism. The Lagrangian of the model is dualized into a Lagrangian of the $BF$-type described by a chiral spinor gauge superfield including a 2-form gauge field. The dual Lagrangian is further dualized into a Lagrangian given by a chiral spinor superfield including a massive 2-form field. In both of the dual formulations, we obtain a superfield into which the vortex strings and their superpartners are e…
By using the self-dual vortex background on extra two-dimensional Riemann surfaces in 5+1 dimensions, the localization mechanism of bulk fermions on a string-like defect with the exponentially decreasing warp-factor is obtained. We give the conditions under which localized spin 1/2 and 3/2 fermions can be obtained.

We carry out a systematic study of correlation functions of momentum modes in the Euclidean c=1 string, as a function of the radius and to all orders in perturbation theory. We obtain simple explicit expressions for several classes of correlators in terms of special functions. The Normal Matrix Model is found to be a powerful calculational tool that computes c=1 string correlators even at finite N. This enables us to obtain a simple combinatoric formula for the 2n-point function of unit momentum modes, which after T-duality determines the vortex condensate. We comment on possible applications …
We study the Lund-Regge equation that governs the motion of strings in a constant background antisymmetric tensor field by using the duality between the Lund-Regge equation and the complex sine-Gordon equation. Similar to the cases of vortex filament configurations in fluid dynamics, we find various exact solitonic string configurations which are the analogue of the Kelvin wave, the Hasimoto soliton and the smoke ring. In particular, using the duality relation, we obtain a completely new type of configuration which corresponds to the breather of the complex sine-Gordon equation.
The main goal of this work is to investigate the possibility of finding the supersymmetric version of the U(1)-global string model which behaves as a vortex-superfluid. To describe the superfluid phase, we introduce a Lorentz-symmetry breaking background that, in an approach based on supersymmetry, leads to a discussion on the relation between the violation of Lorentz symmetry and explicit soft supersymmetry breakings. We also study the relation between the string configuration and the vortex-superfluid phase. In the framework we settle down in terms of superspace and superfields, we actually …
We treat string propagation and interaction in the presence of a background Neveu-Schwarz three-form field strength, suitable for describing vortex rings in a superfluid or low-viscosity normal fluid. A circular vortex ring exhibits instabilities which have been recognized for many years, but whose precise boundaries we determine for the first time analytically in the small core limit. Two circular vortices colliding head-on exhibit stronger instabilities which cause splitting into many small vortices at late times. We provide an approximate analytic treatment of these instabilities and show t…
We review recent results in the matrix model approach to the 2-d non-critical string theory compactified in time, in the phase of condensation of the world sheet vortices (above the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition). This phase is known to describe strings on the 2-d black hole background, due to the conjecture of V.Fateev, A. and Al.Zamolodchikov. The corresponding matrix model has an integrable Toda structure which allows to compute many interesting physical quantities, such as string partition functions of various genera and the 1- and 2-point correlators of vorticities of ar…
Spectral heat kernel/zeta function regularization procedures are employed in this paper to control the divergences arising from vacuum fluctuations of Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield vortices in the Abelian Higgs model. Zero modes of vortex fluctuations are the source of difficulties appearing when the standard Gilkey-de Witt expansion is performed. A modified GdW expansion is developed to diminish the impact of the infrared divergences due to the vortex zero modes. With this new technique at our disposal we compute the one-loop vortex mass shift in the planar AHM and the quantum corrections to …
Recently a special vortex string was found [5] in a class of soliton vortices supported in four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories that under certain conditions can become infinitely thin and can be interpreted as a critical ten-dimensional string. The appropriate bulk Yang-Mills theory has the U(2) gauge group and the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. It supports semilocal non-Abelian vortices with the world-sheet theory for orientational and size moduli described by the weighted CP(2,2) model. The full target space is R_4\times Y_6 where Y_6 is a non-compact Calabi-Yau space. We study the above vortex str…
In this work we obtain bounds on the topological Abelian string-vortex and on the string-cigar, by using a new measure of configurational complexity, known as configurational entropy. In this way, the information-theoretical measure of six-dimensional braneworlds scenarios are capable to probe situations where the parameters responsible for the brane thickness are arbitrary. The so-called configurational entropy (CE) selects the best value of the parameter in the model. This is accomplished by minimizing the CE, namely, by selecting the most appropriate parameters in the model that correspond …
We define a nonabelian particle-vortex duality as a $3-$dimensional analogue of the usual $2-$dimensional worldsheet nonabelian T-duality. The transformation is defined in the presence of a global $SU(2)$ symmetry and, although derived from a string theoretic setting, we formulate it generally. We then apply it to so-called "semilocal strings" in an $SU(2)_{G}\times U(1)_{L}$ gauge theory, originally discovered in the context of cosmic string physics.
We study vortex-strings in four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xU(1) gauge theories with Nf hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc) and general U(1) charges. If Nf>Nc, the vacuum is not gapped and the low-energy theory contains both the vacuum massless excitations and the string zero-modes. The question we address in this work is whether the vacuum and the string moduli decouple at low energies, allowing a description of the low-energy dynamics in terms of a two-dimensional theory on the string worldsheet. We find a simple condition controlling the bulk-string couplin…
We study half-BPS vortex-strings in four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric quiver theories with gauge group SU(N)^n X U(1). The matter content of the quiver can be represented by what we call a tetris diagram, which simplifies the analysis of the Higgs vacua and the corresponding strings. We classify the vacua of these theories in the presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term, and study strings above fully-Higgsed vacua. The strings are studied using classical zero modes analysis, supersymmetric localization and, in some cases, also S-duality. We analyze the conditions for bulk-string decoupling at low…
We study the problem of vortex solutions in the background of an electrically charged black string. We show numerically that the Abelian Higgs field equations in the background of a four-dimensional black string have vortex solutions. These solutions which have axial symmetry, show that the black string can support the Abelian Higgs field as hair. This situation holds also in the case of the extremal black string. We also consider the self-gravity of the Abelian Higgs field and show that the effect of the vortex is to induce a deficit angle in the metric under consideration.
We present an exact numerical computation of the one-loop correction of the string tension for the Nielsen-Olesen vortex in the Abelian Higgs model. The computations proceeds via the computation of the Euclidean Green's function for the gauge, Higgs and Faddeev-Popov fields using mode functions, and taking the appropriate trace. Renormalization is an essential part of this computation, it is done by removing leading order contributions from the numerical results so as to make these finite, and to add the divergent parts back, after suitable regularization and renormalization. We encounter and …
As was shown recently, non-Abelian vortex strings supported in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with the U(2) gauge group and $N_f=4$ quark multiplets (flavors) become critical superstrings. In addition to the translational moduli non-Abelian strings under consideration carry six orientational and size moduli. Together they form a ten-dimensional target space required for a superstring to be critical. The target space of the string sigma model is a product of the flat four-dimensional space and a Calabi-Yau non-compact threefold, namely, the conifold. We study closed string sta…
We consider quantum global vortex string correlation functions, within the Kalb-Ramond framework, in the presence of a background field-strength tensor and investigate the conditions under which this yields a nontrivial contribution to those correlation functions. We show that a background field must be supplemented to the Kalb-Ramond theory, in order to correctly describe the quantum properties of the vortex strings. The explicit form of this background field and the associated quantum vortex string correlation function are derived. The complete expression for the quantum vortex creation oper…
It has been shown that non-Abelian vortex string supported in four dimensional (4D) ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with the U(2) gauge group and $N_f = 4$ quark flavors becomes a critical superstring. This string propagates in the ten dimensional space formed by a product of the flat 4D space and an internal space given by a Calabi-Yau non-compact threefold, namely, the conifold. The spectrum of closed string states of the associated string theory was obtained using the equivalence between the critical string on the conifold and the non-critical string on the semi-infinite cigar de…
We use supersymmetric localization techniques to study the low-energy dynamics of BPS vortex-strings in four-dimensional N=2 theories. We focus on theories with SU(Nc)xU(1) gauge group and Nf hypermultiplets, all in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc) but with general U(1) charges. Recently, we proposed a condition that determines whether the low-energy string dynamics is captured by a two-dimensional worldsheet theory that decouples from the bulk. For strings for which this decoupling applies, we propose a prescription for extracting the two-sphere partition function of the string worlds…
We study matrix quantum mechanics at a finite temperature equivalent to one dimensional compactified string theory with vortex (winding) excitations. It is explicitly demonstrated that the states transforming under non-trivial U(N) representations describe various configurations vortices and anti-vortices. For example, for the adjoint representation the Feynman graphs (representing discretized world-sheets) contain two faces with the boundaries wrapping around the compactified target space which is equivalent to a vortex-anti-vortex pair. A technique is developed to calculate partition functio…
We investigate quantum nucleation of vortex string loops in the relativistic quantum field theory of a complex scalar field by using the Euclidean path integral. Our initial metastable homogeneous field dominated by the $O(3)$ symmetric bounce solution. The nucleation rate and the critical vortex loop size are obtained approximately. Gradually the initial current will be reduced to zero as the induced current inside vortex loops is opposite to the initial current. We also discuss a similar process in Maxwell-Higgs systems and possible physical implications.
We connect the translation modes of the instanton in the two-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with local translations of the vortex of the related model in (3+1) dimensions, the Nielsen-Olesen vortex. In this context these modes describe collective oscillations of the string. We construct the wave function of this mode and we derive, via a virial theorem, an effective action for these oscillations, which is consistent with the action constructed by Nielsen and Olesen using general arguments. We discuss some aspects of renormalization, based on a recent computation of one loop corrections to str…
We present a ``topological'' formulation of arbitrarily shaped vortex strings in four dimensional field theory. By using a large Higgs mass expansion, we then evaluate the effective action of the closed Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex string. It is shown that the effective action contains the Nambu-Goto term and an extrinsic curvature squared term with negative sign. We next evaluate the topological $\FtF$ term and find that it becomes the sum of an ordinary self-intersection number and Polyakov's self-intersection number of the world sheet swept by the vortex string. These self-intersection n…
Non-Abelian vortex strings supported in a certain four-dimensional N=2 Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter were shown arXiv:1502.00683 to become critical superstrings. In addition to translational moduli non-Abelian string under consideration carries orientational and size moduli. Their dynamics is described by two-dimensional sigma model whose target space is a tautological bundle over the complex projective space. For the N=2 theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four fundamental hypermultiplets there are six orientational and size moduli. After combining with four translational modul…
The dynamics of the non-Abelian vortex-string, which describes its low energy oscillations into the target $D=3+1$ spacetime as well as its orientations in the internal space, is derived by the approach of nonlinear realization. The resulting action correlating these two sectors is found to have an invariant synthesis form of the Nambu-Goto-${\bf C}P^{N-1}$ model actions. Higher order corrections to the vortex actions are presented up to the order of quartic derivatives. General $p$-brane dynamics in terms of the internal symmetry breaking is also discussed.
It has been shown that non-Abelian solitonic vortex string supported in four-dimensional (4D) N = 2 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with the U(2) gauge group and $N_f = 4$ quark flavors becomes a critical superstring. This string propagates in the ten-dimensional space formed by a product of the flat 4D space and an internal space given by a Calabi-Yau noncompact threefold, namely, the conifold. The spectrum of low lying closed string states in the associated type IIA string theory was found and interpreted as a spectrum of hadrons in 4D N = 2 SQCD. In particular, the lowest string state appears to …
We discuss the transverse force acting on the spinning cosmic string, moving in the background matter. It comes from the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect and corresponds to the Iordanskii force acting on the vortex in superfluids, when the vortex moves with respect to the normal component of the liquid.
We consider the BEC-Skyrme model which is based on a Skyrme-type model with a potential motivated by Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and, in particular, we study the Skyrmions in proximity of a domain wall that inhabits the theory. The theory turns out to have a rich flora of Skyrmion solutions that manifest themselves as twisted vortex rings or vortons in the bulk and vortex handles attached to the domain wall. The latter are linked open vortex strings. We further study the interaction between the domain wall and the Skyrmion and between the vortex handles themselves as well as between the v…
We show numerically that the Abelian Higgs field equations in the background of a four-dimensional rotating charged black string have vortex solutions. These solutions which have axial symmetry show that the rotating black string can support the Abelian Higgs field as hair. We find that one encounters with an electric field coupled to the Higgs scalar field for the case of rotating black string. This electric field is due to an electric charge per unit length, which increases as the rotation parameter becomes larger. We also find that the vortex thickness decreases as the rotation parameter gr…
In this work there are proposed several new 6D brane worlds based on exact topological solutions to the vortex equations for the Abelian Higgs model, with suitable boundary conditions and symmetry breaking potentials similar to the mexican hat. Just as happens for RS domain wall brane worlds, it is shown that the massless mode of linearized gravity is localized in the neighborhood of the string-vortex solution while there are not massive bounded states. The correction to the newtonian limit of the effective 4D gravity is calculated.

We study global vortices coupled to (2+1) dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. We found nonsingular vortex solutions in $ϕ^4$-theory with a broken U(1) symmetry, of which the spacetimes do not involve physical curvature singularity. When the magnitude of negative cosmological constant is larger than a critical value at a given symmetry breaking scale, the spacetime structure is a regular hyperbola, however it becomes a charged black hole when the magnitude of cosmological constant is less than the critical value. We explain through duality transformation the reason why stat…
A very simple, quadratic potential is used to construct vortex strings in a generalized Skyrme model and an additional quadratic potential is used to embed sine-Gordon-type halfkinks onto the string worldline, yielding half-Skyrmions on a string. The strings are furthermore compactified onto a circle and the halfkinks are forced to appear in pairs; in particular 2B halfkinks (half-Skyrmions) will appear as beads on a ring with B being the number of times the host vortex is twisted and also the baryon number (Skyrmion number) from the bulk point of view. Finally, we construct an effective field…

In addition to four translational moduli non-Abelian strings under consideration carry six orientational and size moduli. Together they form a ten-dimensional space required for a superstring to be critical. Numerical data for the SU(2) confining string in the maximal abelian projection are analysed. The distribution of the electric flux and monopole currents are perfectly described by the classical equations of motion for the dual Abelian Higgs model. The mass of the vector boson is equal to the mass of the monopole (Higgs particle) within numerical errors. The classical energy per unit length of the Abrikosov vortex reproduces 94% of the full non-Abelian string tension.
A Nielsen-Olesen vortex usually sits in an environment that expels the flux that is confined to the vortex, so flux is not present both inside and outside. We construct vortices for which this is not true, where the flux carried by the vortex also permeates the `bulk' far from the vortex. The idea is to mix the vortex's internal gauge flux with an external flux using off-diagonal kinetic mixing. Such `dark' vortices could play a phenomenological role in models with both cosmic strings and a dark gauge sector. When coupled to gravity they also provide explicit ultra-violet completions for codim…
We demonstrate the existence of stationary states composed of vortex lines attached to planar dark solitons in scalar Bose-Einstein condensates. Dynamically stable states of this type are found at low values of the chemical potential in channeled condensates, where the long-wavelength instability of dark solitons is prevented. In oblate, harmonic traps, U-shaped vortex lines attached by both ends to a single planar soliton are shown to be long-lived states. Our results are reported for parameters typical of current experiments, and open up a way to explore the interplay of different topologica…
Non-abelian gauge theories in the Higgs phase admit a startling variety of BPS solitons. These include domain walls, vortex strings, confined monopoles threaded on vortex strings, vortex strings ending on domain walls, monopoles threaded on strings ending on domain walls, and more. After presenting a self-contained review of these objects, including several new results on the dynamics of domain walls, we go on to examine the possible interactions of solitons of various types. We point out the existence of a classical binding energy when the string ends on the domain wall which can be thought o…
The vortex-boson (or Abelian-Higgs, XY) duality in 2+1 dimensions demonstrates that the quantum disordered superfluid is equivalent to an ordered superconductor and the other way around. Such a duality structure should be ubiquitous but in 3+1 (and higher) dimensions a precise formulation of the duality is lacking. The problem is that the topological defects become extended objects, strings in 3+1D. We argue how the condensate of such vortex strings must behave from the known physics of the disordered superfluid, namely the Bose-Mott insulator. A flaw in earlier proposals is repaired, and a mo…
The shape and dynamics of the nonrelativistic gauge vortex string in the parity-broken media is considered, upon reducing the problem to finding the extremum of the Abelian Higgs model effective action with the fixed B-type helicity of the gauge field. It is shown that in contrast with the case of the fixed A-type helicity, the static solution of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional in the London limit is the helix with the specific relation between the curvature and torsion of the vortex line depending on the strength of the space parity violating contribution of the Lifshitz invariant. A no…
It is well-known that localized topological defects (solitons) experience recoil when they suffer an impact by incident particles. Higher-dimensional topological defects develop distinctive wave patterns propagating along their worldvolume under similar circumstances. For 1-dimensional topological defects (vortex lines), these wave patterns fail to decay in the asymptotic future: the propagating wave eventually displaces the vortex line a finite distance away from its original position (the distance is proportional to the transferred momentum). The quantum version of this phenomenon, which we …
We offer a physicists' proof that center-vortex theory requires the area in the Wilson-loop area law to involve an extremal area. Area-law dynamics is determined by integrating over Wilson loops only, not over surface fluctuations for a fixed loop. Fluctuations leading to to perimeter-law corrections come from loop fluctuations as well as integration over finite -thickness center-vortex collective coordinates. In d=3 (or d=2+1) we exploit a contour form of the extremal area in isothermal which is similar to d=2 (or d=1+1) QCD in many respects, except that there are both quartic and quadratic t…
We derive an exact equation of motion for a non-relativistic vortex in two- and three-dimensional models with a complex field. The velocity is given in terms of gradients of the complex field at the vortex position. We discuss the problem of reducing the field dynamics to a closed dynamical system with non-locally interacting strings as the fundamental degrees of freedom.
