We develop a McKean-Vlasov interpretation of Navier-Stokes equations with external force field in the whole space, by associating with local mild $L^p$-solutions of the 3d-vortex equation a generalized nonlinear diffusion with random space-time birth that probabilistically describes creation of rotation in the fluid due to nonconservativeness of the force. We establish a local well-posedness result for this process and a stochastic representation formula for the vorticity in terms of a vector-weighted version of its law after its birth instant. Then we introduce a stochastic system of 3d vortices with mollified interaction and random space-time births, and prove the propagation of chaos property, with the nonlinear process as limit, at an explicit pathwise convergence rate. Convergence rates for stochastic approximation schemes of the velocity and the vorticity fields are also obtained. We thus extend and refine previous results on the probabilistic interpretation and stochastic approximation methods for the nonforced equation, generalizing also a recently introduced random space-time-birth particle method for the 2d-Navier-Stokes equation with force.
We study the incompressible hypodissipative Navier-Stokes equations with dissipation exponent $0 < α< \frac{1}{2}$ on the three-dimensional torus perturbed by an additive Wiener noise term and prove the existence of an initial condition for which distinct probabilistic weak solutions exist. To this end, we employ convex integration methods to construct a pathwise probabilistically strong solution, which violates a pathwise energy inequality up to a suitable stopping time. This paper seems to be the first in which such solutions are constructed via Beltrami waves instead of intermittent jets or…
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^d$ ($d=2,3$) with a stochastic forcing term which is white noise in time and coloured in space; the spatial covariance of the noise is not too regular, so Itô calculus cannot be applied in the space of finite energy vector fields. We prove existence of weak solutions for $d=2,3$ and pathwise uniqueness for $d=2$.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of both mild(/variational) solutions and weak (in the sense of PDE) solutions of coupled system of 2D stochastic Chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes equations. The mild/variational solution is obtained through a fixed point argument in a purposely constructed Banach space. To get the weak solution we first prove the existence of a martingale weak solution and then we show that the pathwise uniqueness holds for the martingale solution.
We prove ergodicity of the finite dimensional approximations of the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, driven by a random force. The forcing noise acts only on a few modes and some algebraic conditions on the forced modes are found that imply the ergodicity. The convergence rate to the unique invariant measure is shown to be exponential.
We construct solutions to the randomly-forced Navier--Stokes--Poisson system in periodic three-dimensional domains or in the whole three-dimensional Euclidean space. These solutions are weak in the sense of PDEs and also weak in the sense of probability. As such, they satisfy the system in the sense of distributions and the underlying probability space and the stochastic driving force are also unknowns of the problem. Additionally, these solutions dissipate energy, satisfies a relative energy inequality in the sense of [4] and satisfy a renormalized form of the continuity equation in the sense…
In this paper we show that solutions of two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations driven by Brownian motion can be approximated by stochastic Navier-Stokes equations forced by pure jump noise/random kicks.
A stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with space-time Gaussian white noise is considered, having as infinitesimal invariant measure a Gaussian measure μ_ν whose covariance is given in terms of the enstrophy. Pathwise uniqueness for μ_ν-a.e. initial velocity is proven for solutions having μ_ν as invariant measure.
Using the Maslowski and Seidler method, the existence of invariant measure for 2-dimensional stochastic Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise is proved in state space $L_x^2\times H^1$, working with the weak topology. Also, the existence of global pathwise solution is investigated using the stochastic compactness argument.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of both local martingale and local pathwise solutions of an abstract nonlinear stochastic evolution system. The primary application of this abstract framework is to infer the local existence of strong, pathwise solutions to the 3D primitive equations of the oceans and atmosphere forced by a nonlinear multiplicative white noise. Instead of developing our results specifically for the 3D primitive equations we choose to develop them in a slightly abstract framework which covers many related forms of these equations (atmosphere, oceans, coupled atmosphere-…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a time-dependent domain driven by Brownian motion. A martingale solution is constructed through domain transformation and appropriate Galerkin approximations on time-dependent spaces. The probabilistic strong solution follows from the pathwise uniqueness and the Yamada-Watanable theorem.
A finite-state Markov chain is introduced in the noise terms of the three-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in order to allow for transitions between two types of multiplicative noises. We call such systems as stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with Markov switching. To solve such a system, a family of regularized stochastic systems is introduced. For each such regularized system, the existence of a unique strong solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis) is established by the method of martingale problems and pathwise uniqueness. The regularization is removed in the limit by …
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
The paper is devoted to studying the asymptotics of the family $(μ^\varepsilon)$ of stationary measures of the Markov process generated by the flow of stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation with smooth white noise. By using the large deviations techniques, we prove that this family is exponentially tight in $H^{1-γ}(D)$ for any $γ>0$ and vanishes exponentially outside any neighborhood of the set $\cal O$ of $ω$-limit points of the deterministic equation. In particular, any of its weak limits is concentrated on the closure $\bar{\cal O}$. A key ingredient of the proof is a new formula that allows…
In this paper, we investigate both deterministic and stochastic 2D Navier Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosity. For the deterministic case, we prove the global well-posedness of the system with initial data in the anisotropic Sobolev space $\tilde{H}^{0,1}.$ For the stochastic case, we obtain existence of the martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness of the solutions, which imply existence of the probabilistically strong solution to this system by the Yamada-Watanabe Theorem.
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem in R^d for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation \partial_tu=Δu-(u,\nabla)u-\nabla p+f(u)+ [(σ,\nabla)u-\nabla \tilde p+g(u)]\circ \dot W, u(0)=u_0,\qquad divu=0, driven by white noise \dot W. Under minimal assumptions on regularity of the coefficients and random forces, the existence of a global weak (martingale) solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation is proved. In the two-dimensional case, the existence and pathwise uniqueness of a global strong solution is shown. A Wiener chaos-based criterion for the existence and uniqueness of a strong glo…
We study the stochastic effect on the three-dimensional inviscid primitive equations (PEs, also called the hydrostatic Euler equations). Specifically, we consider a larger class of noises than multiplicative noises, and work in the analytic function space due to the ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces of PEs without horizontal viscosity. Under proper conditions, we prove the local existence of martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness. By adding vertical viscosity, i.e., considering the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations, we can relax the restriction on initial conditions to be only analytic i…
We study constrained 2-dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations driven by a multiplicative Gaussian noise in the Stratonovich form. In the deterministic case [4] we showed the existence of global solutions only on a two dimensional torus and hence we concentrated on such a case here. We prove the existence of a martingale solution and later using Schmalfuss idea [20] we show the pathwise uniqueness of the solutions. We also establish the existence of a strong solution using a Yamada-Watanabe type result from Ondreját [17].
We consider a parameter estimation problem to determine the viscosity $ν$ of a stochastically perturbed 2D Navier-Stokes system. We derive several different classes of estimators based on the first $N$ Fourier modes of a single sample path observed on a finite time interval. We study the consistency and asymptotic normality of these estimators. Our analysis treats strong, pathwise solutions for both the periodic and bounded domain cases in the presence of an additive white (in time) noise.
We study a singular limit of a scaled compressible Navier--Stokes--Coriolis system driven by both a deterministic and stochastic forcing terms in three dimensions. If the Mach number is comparable to the Froude number with both proportional to say $\varepsilon\ll 1$, whereas the Rossby number scales like $\varepsilon^m$ for $m>1$ large, then we show that any family of weak martingale solution to the $3$-D randomly forced rotating compressible equation (under the influence of a deterministic centrifugal force) converges in probability, as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$, to the $2$-D incompressible N…
We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions to a stochastically forced one-dimensional Navier-Stokes system, describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid, in the case of linear pressure law. We prove existence of an invariant measure for the Markov process generated by strong solutions. We overcome the difficulties of working with non-Feller Markov semigroups on non-complete metric spaces by generalizing the classical Krylov-Bogoliubov method, and by providing suitable polynomial and exponential moment bounds on the solution, together with pathwise estimates.
We prove that the any Markov solution to the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations driven by a mildly degenerate noise (i.e.all but finitely many Fourier modes are forced) is uniquely ergodic. This follows by proving strong Feller regularity and irreducibility.
We prove the strong Feller property and exponential mixing for 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation driven by mildly degenerate noises (i.e. all but finitely many Fourier modes are forced) via Kolmogorov equation approach.
The main goal of this article is to study the effect of small, highly nonlinear, unbounded drifts (small time large deviation principle (LDP) based on exponential equivalence arguments) for a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with fully monotone coefficients driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise. The small time LDP obtained in this paper is applicable for various quasi-linear and semilinear SPDEs such as porous medium equations, Cahn-Hilliard equation, 2D Navier-Stokes equations, convection-diffusion equation, 2D liquid crystal model, power law fluids, Ladyzhenskaya …
Non-uniqueness of three-dimensional Euler equations and Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise, path-wise and more recently even in law, have been proven by various authors. We prove non-uniqueness in law of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise and diffused via a fractional Laplacian that has power between zero and one half. The solution we construct has H$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$lder regularity with a small exponent rather than Sobolev regularity with a small exponent. For the power sufficiently small, the non-uniqueness in law holds at the level of Leray-Hop…
We give an overview of the ideas central to some recent developments in the ergodic theory of the stochastically forced Navier Stokes equations and other dissipative stochastic partial differential equations. Since our desire is to make the core ideas clear, we will mostly work with a specific example: the stochastically forced Navier Stokes equations. To further clarify ideas, we will also examine in detail a toy problem. A few general theorems are given. Spatial regularity, ergodicity, exponential mixing, coupling for a SPDE, and hypoellipticity are all discussed.
We consider the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation on the torus. Our main result concerns the temporal and spatio-temporal discretisation of a local strong pathwise solution. We prove optimal convergence rates in for the energy error with respect to convergence in probability, that is convergence of order 1 in space and of order (up to) 1/2 in time. The result holds up to the possible blow-up of the (time-discrete) solution. Our approach is based on discrete stopping times for the (time-discrete) solution.
We investigate a stochastic version of the Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth two- or three-dimensional domain with random initial data. The system consists of a Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a convective Allen-Cahn equation, with two independent sources of randomness given by general multiplicative-type Wiener noises. In particular, the Allen-Cahn equation is characterized by a singular potential of logarithmic type as prescribed by the classical thermodynamical derivation of the model. The problem is endowed with a no-slip boundary condition for the (volume averaged) velocity …
The paper is devoted to studying the image of probability measures on a Hilbert space under finite-dimensional analytic maps. We establish sufficient conditions under which the image of a measure has a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure and continuously depends on the map. The results obtained are applied to the 2D Navier--Stokes equations perturbed by various random forces of low dimension.
The Bayesian approach to inverse problems is of paramount importance in quantifying uncertainty about the input to and the state of a system of interest given noisy observations. Herein we consider the forward problem of the forced 2D Navier Stokes equation. The inverse problem is inference of the forcing, and possibly the initial condition, given noisy observations of the velocity field. We place a prior on the forcing which is in the form of a spatially correlated temporally white Gaussian process, and formulate the inverse problem for the posterior distribution. Given appropriate spatial re…
In this work, we demonstrate the Wong-Zakai approximation results for two and three dimensional stochastic convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (SCBF) equations forced by Hilbert space valued Wiener noise on bounded domains. Even though the existence and uniqueness of a pathwise strong solution to SCBF equations is known, the existence of a unique solution to the approximating system is not immediate from the solvability results of SCBF equations, and we prove it by using Faedo-Galerkin approximation technique and monotonicity arguments. Moreover, as an application of the Wong-Zakai approximation, …
In this paper we establish a sharp non-uniqueness result for stochastic $d$-dimensional ($d\geq2$) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. First, for every divergence free initial condition in $L^2$ we show existence of infinite many global in time probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions in the class $L^α\big(Ω,L^p_tL^\infty\big)$ for any $1\leq p<2,α\geq1$. Second, we prove the above result is sharp in the sense that pathwise uniqueness holds in the class of $L^p_tL^q$ for some $p\in[2,\infty],q\in(2,\infty]$ such that $\frac2{p}+\frac{d}{q}\leq1$, which is a stochastic versi…
