We have studied the $1/f$ voltage noise of gold nano-contacts in electromigrated and mechanically controlled break-junctions having resistance values $R$ that can be tuned from 10 $Ω$ (many channels) to 10 k$Ω$ (single atom contact). The noise is caused by resistance fluctuations as evidenced by the $S_V\propto V^2$ dependence of the power spectral density $S_V$ on the applied DC voltage $V$. As a function of $R$ the normalized noise $S_V/V^2$ shows a pronounced cross-over from $\propto R^3$ for low-ohmic junctions to $\propto R^{1.5}$ for high-ohmic ones. The measured powers of 3 and 1.5 are in agreement with $1/f$-noise generated in the bulk and reflect the transition from diffusive to ballistic transport.
We theoretically investigate the spin--wave spin current induced by the spin Seebeck effect in magnonic spin tunneling junctions (MSTJs) for arbitrary magnetization directions. We show that the MSTJ functions as a \textit{tunable} spin Seebeck diode in which the tunneling spin current can be turned on and off with high efficiency by controlling the magnetization direction.
One of the unique features of graphene is that the Fermi wavelength of its charge carriers can be tuned electrostatically over a wide range. This allows in principle to tune the transparency of a pn-junction electrostatically, as this depends on the ratio between the physical extension of the junction and the electron wavelength, i.e. on the effective width of the junction itself. However, this simple idea - which would allow to switch smoothly between a Veselago lens and a Klein-collimator - has proved to be difficult to demonstrate experimentally because of the limited amount of independentl…
We have investigated the electrostatics and electronic transport of the gate tunable 2D pn junction by implementing a comprehensive physics-based simulator that self-consistently solves the 2D Poisson's equation coupled to the drift-diffusion current and continuity equations. The simulator considers the strong influence of the out-of-plane electric field through the gate dielectric and the presence of interface states. The impact of parameters such as gate capacitance, energy gap and interface trap states density have been considered to model properties such as the depletion width, rectificati…
Topological Josephson junctions (TJJs) have been a subject of widespread interest due to their hosting of Majorana zero modes. In long junctions, i.e. junctions where the junction length exceeds the superconducting coherence length, TJJs manifest themselves in specific features of the critical current. Here we propose to couple the helical edge states mediating the TJJ to additional channels or quantum dots, by which the effective junction length can be increased by tunable parameters associated with these couplings, so that such measurements become possible even in short junctions. Besides ef…
We discover a new type of geometric phase of Dirac fermions in solids, which is an electronic analogue of the Pancharatnam phase of polarized light. The geometric phase occurs in a local and nonadiabatic scattering event of Dirac fermions at a junction, unveiling topological aspects of scattering of chiral particles, and it is experimentally tunable to an arbitrary value. It provides a unique approach of detecting the topological order of the insulator in a metal-insulator junction of Dirac fermions, establishing new bulk-edge correspondence. The geometric phase also modifies the fundamental q…
We propose a scheme to implement a tunable, wide frequency-band dissipative environment using a double chain of Josephson junctions. The two parallel chains consist of identical SQUIDs, with magnetic-flux tunable inductance, coupled to each other at each node via a capacitance much larger than the junction capacitance. Thanks to this capacitive coupling, the system sustains electromagnetic modes with a wide frequency dispersion. The internal quality factor of the modes is maintained as high as possible, and the damping is introduced by a uniform coupling of the modes to a transmission line, it…
The electrostatics of two-dimensional (2D) lateral pn homojunctions considering the impact of electrostatic doping by means of two split bottom-gates are studied here. Analytical expressions are obtained from the solution of the 2D Poisson equation considering a depletion approximation. Straightforward analytical models for the electrostatic potential and the depletion width within both the dielectric and the 2D semiconductor are obtained for both the symmetrical and asymmetrical cases. In contrast to the case of devices with chemical doping, the obtained depletion width model of devices with …
We report fabrication and measurement of a device where closely-placed two parallel InAs nanowires (NWs) are contacted by source and drain normal metal electrodes. Established technique includes selective deposition of double nanowires onto a previously defined gate region. By tuning the junction with the finger bottom gates, we confirmed the formation of parallel double quantum dots, one in each NW, with a finite electrostatic coupling between each other. With the fabrication technique established in this study, devices proposed for more advanced experiments, such as Cooper-pair splitting and…
There has been a rapidly growing interest in optoelectronic properties of graphene and associated structures. Despite the general belief on absence of spontaneous emission in graphene, which is normally attributed to its unique ultrafast carrier momentum relaxation mechanisms, there exist a few recent evidences of strong optical gain and spontaneous light emission from mono-layer graphene, supported by observations of dominant role of out-of-plane excitons in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In this article, we develop a novel concept of light emission and optical gain from simple vertical gr…
We theoretically study the differential conductance of a one-dimensional normal-superconductor-normal-superconductor (N-SNS) junction with a phase bias applied between the two superconductors. We consider specifically a junction formed by a spin-orbit coupled semiconducting nanowire with regions of the nanowire having superconducting pairing induced by a bulk $s$-wave superconductor. When the nanowire is tuned into a topologically non-trivial phase by a Zeeman field, it hosts zero-energy Majorana modes at its ends as well as at the interface between the two superconductors. The phase-dependent…
Controlling electronic transport through a single-molecule junction is crucial for molecular electronics or spintronics. In magnetic molecular devices, the spin degree-of-freedom can be used to this end since the magnetic properties of the magnetic ion centers fundamentally impact the transport through the molecules. Here we demonstrate that the electron pathway in a single-molecule device can be selected between two molecular orbitals by varying a magnetic field, giving rise to a tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance up to 93%. The unique tunability of the electron pathways is due to the magn…
We study spin Hall effect in a three terminal Y-shaped device in presence of tunable spin-orbit (SO) interactions via Landauer-Büttiker formalism. We have evolved a fabrication technique for creating different angular separation between the two arms of the Y-shaped device so as to investigate the effect of angular width on the spin Hall conductance (SHC). A smaller angular separation yields a larger conductance. Also arbitrary orientation of the spin quantization axes yields interesting three dimensional contour maps for the SHC corresponding to different angular separation of the Y-shaped dev…
The characteristics of molecular electronic devices are critically determined by metal-organic interfaces, which influence the arrangement of the orbital levels that participate in charge transport. Studies on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) show (molecule-dependent) level shifts as well as transport-gap renormalization, suggesting that polarization effects in the metal substrate play a key role in the level alignment with respect to the metal's Fermi energy. Here, we provide direct evidence for an electrode-induced gap renormalization in single-molecule junctions. We study charge transport i…
We consider a finite-size topological Josephson junction formed at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to conventional superconductors and study the impact of Cooper pair symmetries on the electron transport. We find that, due to the finite junction size, electron transport is highly tunable by the superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ across the junction. At zero frequency and $ϕ=π$, the setup exhibits vanishing local Andreev reflection and perfect normal transmission due to the interplay of finite junction size and formation of topological Andreev bound states in …
Inverted HgTe/CdTe quantum wells have been used as a platform for the realization of 2D topological insulators, bulk insulator materials with spin-helical metallic edges states protected by time-reversal symmetry. This work investigates the spectrum and the charge transport in HgTe/CdTe quantum well junctions both in the topological regime and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. We model the system using the BHZ effective Hamiltonian and compute the transport properties using recursive Green's functions with a finite differences' method. Specifically, we have studied the material's spati…
We report on experiments with superconducting metamaterials containing Josephson junctions. In these structures, split-ring resonators used in conventional metamaterials are replaced by superconducting loops that are interrupted by Josephson junctions, so called rf-SQUIDs. Like the split-ring resonators, these elements can be seen as LC-resonators that couple to the magnetic field. The advantage of superconducting thin-film metamaterials is that, due to the tunable intrinsic inductance of the Josephson junction, the resonance frequency of the rf-SQUID can be changed by applying an external dc …
Quantum dots attached to BCS superconducting leads exhibit a $0-π$ impurity quantum phase transition, which can be experimentally controlled either by the gate voltage or by the superconducting phase difference. For the pertinent superconducting single-impurity Anderson model, we newly present two simple analytical formulae describing the position of the phase boundary in parameter space for the weakly correlated and Kondo regime, respectively. Furthermore, we show that the two-level approximation provides an excellent description of the low temperature physics of superconducting quantum dots …
We report experiments on micron-scale normal metal loop connected by superconducting wires, where the sample geometry enables full modulation of the thermal activation barrier with applied magnetic flux, resembling a symmetric quantum interference device. We find that except a constant factor of five, the modulation of the barrier can be well fitted by the Ambegaokar-Halperin model for a resistively shunted junction, extended here to a proximity junction with flux-tunable coupling energy estimated using quasiclassical theory. This observation sheds light on the understanding of effect of therm…
Using the Landauer-Bütikker formalism, we study the graphene magneto-transport in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI). We show that the angle resolved transmission probability in the proposed structures can be tuned by the RSOI strength. The transmission spectrum show Klein tunneling in the parallel (P) magnetization configuration which can be blocked by the RSOI. This effect is also observable for the anti-parallel (AP) magnetization configuration in different incident angle. The numerical results shows that the spin-polarized conductance strongly depends on the strength of t…
We investigate the coupling between ferromagnet and superconducting phase dynamics in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction. The current-voltage characteristics of the junction demonstrate a pattern of subharmonic current steps which forms a devil's staircase structure. We show that a width of the steps becomes maximal at ferromagnetic resonance. Moreover, we demonstrate that the structure of the steps and their widths can be tuned by changing the frequency of the external magnetic field, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy, Gilbert damping and the junction size.
Graphene based transistors relying on a conventional structure cannot switch properly because of the absence of an energy gap in graphene. To overcome this limitation, a barristor device was proposed, whose operation is based on the modulation of the graphene-semiconductor (GS) Schottky barrier by means of a top gate, and demonstrating an ON-OFF current ratio up to $10^5$. Such a large number is likely due to the realization of an ultra clean interface with virtually no interface trapped charge. However, it is indeed technologically relevant to know the impact that the interface trapped charge…
We propose a tunable topological Josephson junction in silicene where electrostatic gates could switch between a trivial and a topological junction. These aspects are a consequence of a tunable phase transition of the topologically confined valley-chiral states from a spin-degenerate to a spin-helical regime. We calculate the Andreev bound states in such a junction analytically using a low-energy approximation to the tight-binding model of silicene in proximity to s-wave superconductors as well as numerically in the short- and long-junction regime and in the presence of intervalley scattering.…
Stochastic switching-current distribution in a graphene-based Josephson junction exhibits a crossover from the classical to quantum regime, revealing the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a Josephson phase particle at low temperatures. Microwave spectroscopy measurements indicate a multi-photon absorption process occurring via discrete energy levels in washboard potential well. The crossover temperature for MQT and the quantized level spacing are controlled with the gate voltage, implying its potential application to gate-tunable superconducting quantum bits.
Graphene quantum dots (QDs) are intensively studied as platforms for the next generation of quantum electronic devices. Fine tuning of the transport properties in monolayer graphene QDs, in particular with respect to the independent modulation of the tunnel barrier transparencies, remains challenging and is typically addressed using electrostatic gating. We investigate charge transport in back-gated graphene mechanical break junctions and reveal Coulomb blockade physics characteristic of a single, high-quality QD when a nanogap is opened in a graphene constriction. By mechanically controlling …
We theoretically study the Josephson current in a superconductor/quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor junction by using the lattice Green function technique. When an in-plane external Zeeman field is applied to the quantum anomalous Hall insulator, the Josephson current $J$ flows without a phase difference across the junction $θ$. The phase shift $φ$ appealing in the current-phase relationship $J\propto \sin(θ-φ$) is proportional to the amplitude of Zeeman fields and depends on the direction of Zeeman fields. A phenomenological analysis of the Andreev reflection processes explains t…
Phenomena that are highly sensitive to magnetic fields can be exploited in sensors and non-volatile memories. The scaling of such phenomena down to the single molecule level may enable novel spintronic devices. Here we report magnetoresistance in a single molecule junction arising from negative differential resistance that shifts in a magnetic field at a rate two orders of magnitude larger than Zeeman shifts. This sensitivity to the magnetic field produces two voltage-tunable forms of magnetoresistance, which can be selected via the applied bias. The negative differential resistance is caused …
Unique properties of a ballistic DND or grain boundary D-D junction, including doubly degenerate ground state with tunable potential barrier between the "up" and "down" states and non-quantized spontaneous magnetic flux, make it a good candidate for a solid state qubit. The role of quantum "spin" variable is played by the sign of equilibrium superconducting phase difference on the junction, which is revealed in the direction of spontaneous supercurrent flow in equilibrium. Possibilities of design-specific simultaneous operations with several integrated qubits are discussed.
The semiconducting p-n junction is a simple device structure with great relevance for electronic and optoelectronic applications. The successful integration of low-dimensional materials in electronic circuits has opened the way forward for producing gate-tunable p-n junctions. In that context, here we present an organic (Cu-phthalocyanine)-2D layered material (MoS2) hybrid p-n junction with both gate-tunable diode characteristics and photovoltaic effect. Our proof-of-principle devices show multifunctional properties with diode rectifying factors of up to 10^4, while under light exposure they e…
Quantum dynamics and kinetics of electrically gated graphene ribbons with lateral n-p and e-n-p junctions under magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that the snake-like states of quasiparticles skipping along the n-p interface do not manifest themselve in the main semiclassical part of the ribbon conductance. Giant oscillations of the conductance of a ribbon with an n-p-n junction are predicted and analytically calculated. Depending on the number of junctions inside the ribbon its magnetoresistance may be controllably changed by 50% - 90% by an extremely small change of the magnetic fi…

We present experimental and numerical studies of a light-emitting transistor comprising two quasi-lateral junctions between a two-dimensional electron and hole gas. These lithographically defined junctions are fabricated by etching of a modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. In this device electrons and holes can be directed to the same area by drain and gate voltages, defining a recombination zone tunable in size and position. It could therefore provide an architecture for probing low-dimensional devices by analysing the emitted light of the recombination zone.
We investigate one-dimensional Josephson junction arrays with generalized unit cells as a circuit approach to engineer microwave band gaps. An array described by a lattice with a basis can be designed to have a gap in the electromagnetic spectrum, in full analogy to electronic band gaps in diatomic or many-atomic crystals. We derive the dependence of this gap on the array parameters in the linear regime, and suggest experimentally feasible designs to bring the gap below the single junction plasma frequency. The gap can be tuned in a wide frequency range by applying external flux, and it persis…
We calculate the efficiency with which magnetic tunnel junctions can be used as resonant detectors of incident microwave radiation via the spin-torque diode effect. The expression we derive is in good agreement with the sensitivities we measure for MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions with an extended (unpatterned) magnetic pinned layer. However, the measured sensitivities are reduced below our estimate for a second set of devices in which the pinned layer is a patterned synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF). We suggest that this reduction may be due to an undesirable coupling between the magnetic fr…
In spite of extended efforts, detecting thermoelectric effects in superconductors have proven to be a challenging task, due to the inherent superconducting particle-hole symmetry. Here we present a theoretical study of an experimentally attainable Superconductor -- Quantum Dot -- Superconductor (SC-QD-SC) Josephson Junction with highly tunable thermoelectric properties and a thermal response that is far larger than previous suggestions. The QD energy level between the SCs breaks particle-hole symmetry in a gradual manner, allowing, in the presence of a temperature gradient, for gate controlled…
We study time-dependent electronic and spin transport through an electronic level connected to two leads and coupled with a single-molecule magnet via exchange interaction. The molecular spin is treated as a classical variable and precesses around an external magnetic field. We derive expressions for charge and spin currents by means of the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functions technique in linear order with respect to the time-dependent magnetic field created by this precession. The coupling between the electronic spins and the magnetization dynamics of the molecule creates inelastic tunn…
Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) coupled to superconductors offer the opportunity to explore a variety of quantum phenomena. These include the study of novel Josephson effects, superconducting correlations in quantum (spin) Hall systems, hybrid superconducting qubits and emergent topological states in semiconductors with spin-orbit interaction (SOI). InSb is a well-known example of such a strong SOI semiconductor, however hybrid superconducting devices in InSb quantum wells remain unexplored. Here, we interface InSb 2DEGs with a superconductor (NbTiN) to create Josephson junctions (JJs),…
A technique is presented, which creates MCB junctions that can be pivoted to any desirable angle. The MCB junction equipped with a specific glass liquid cell can be used to produce a MCB junction, of which the electrodes are covered with a microscopic layer of fluid, thus producing a partially wet phase MCB junction.
We study the transport properties of Dirac electrons across a two-dimensional normal metal-barrier-normal metal (NBN) interfaces in monolayer borophane. We analyse the transmission probability with variation of the width of the barrier region, the incidence energy and transverse momentum. We demonstrate that a gap exists in the transmission probability spectrum and the position, width of transmission gap can be tuned by the barrier strength and transverse momentum respectively. We point out the variation of the ballistic tunneling conductance as a function of the width of the barrier region an…
A semiconducting nanowire fully wrapped by a superconducting shell has been proposed as a platform for obtaining Majorana modes at small magnetic fields. In this study, we demonstrate that the appearance of subgap states in such structures is actually governed by the junction region in tunneling spectroscopy measurements, and not the full-shell nanowire itself. Short tunneling regions never show subgap states, whereas longer junctions always do. This can be understood in terms of quantum dots forming in the junction and hosting Andreev levels in the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov regime. The intricate magne…
Electric transport of double gated bilayer graphene devices is studied as a function of charge density and bandgap. A top gate electrode can be used to control locally the Fermi level to create a pn junction between the double-gated and single-gated region. These bilayer graphene pn diodes are characterized by non-linear currents and directional current rectification, and we show the rectified direction of the source-drain voltage can be controlled by using gate voltages. A systematic study of the pn junction characteristics allows to extract a gate-dependent bandgap value which ranges from 0 …
The decoherence rate of a quantum dot coupled to a fluctuating environment described by a normal-metal superconductor junction is considered. The density-density correlator at low frequencies constitutes the kernel which enters the calculation of the phase coherence time. The density fluctuations are connected to the finite frequency current-current correlations in the point contact via the continuity equation. Below and above the gap, at zero temperature the density correlator contains spatial oscillations at half of the Fermi wave length on the normal side. As the bias crosses the supercondu…
We investigate the proximity effect in junctions between $N=3$ superconductors under commensurate voltage bias. The bias is chosen to highlight the role of transport processes that exchange multiple Cooper pairs coherently between more than two superconductors. Such non-local processes can be studied in the dc response, where local transport processes do not contribute. We focus on the proximity-induced normal density of states that we investigate in a wide parameter space. We reveal the presence of deep and highly tunable pseudogaps and other rich structures. These are due to a static proximi…
