We show that the Z$_2$ invariant, which classifies the topological properties of time reversal invariant insulators, has deep relationship with the global anomaly. Although the second Chern number is the basic topological invariant characterizing time reversal systems, we show that the relative phase between the Kramers doublet reduces the topological quantum number Z to Z$_2$.
Topological metals possess gapless band structures accompanied with nontrivial edge states. Topological metals are created from the topological insulators by adjusting the magnetic flux. Here we propose the time-reversal symmetry protected topological metal without employing the magnetic flux. Topological metallic phase presents although the Chern number vanishes. In the topologically nontrivial phase, three different cases in the metallic phase are distinguished from the band-touching and in-gap features of the topological edge states. These findings shed light on the time-reversal symmetric …
We find a new class of topological superconductors which possess an emergent time-reversal symmetry that is present only after projecting to an effective low-dimensional model. We show that a topological phase in symmetry class DIII can be realized in a noninteracting system coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor only if the physical time-reversal symmetry of the system is broken, and we provide three general criteria that must be satisfied in order to have such a phase. We also provide an explicit model which realizes the class DIII topological superconductor in 1D. We show that, just as in ti…
One of the hallmarks of time-reversal-symmetric topological insulators in three dimensions is the topological magnetoelectric effect (TME). So far, a time-reversal breaking variant of this effect has attracted much attention, in the sense that the induced electric charge changes sign when the direction of an externally applied magnetic field is reversed. Theoretically, this effect is described by the so-called axion term. Here, we discuss a time-reversal-symmetric TME, where the electric charge depends only on the magnitude of the magnetic field but is independent of its sign. We obtain this n…
We investigate the topological phase derived by time-reversal breaking fields in a nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected two-dimensional Dirac semimetal. When the nonsymmorphic symmetry is preserved even in the presence of the field, the two-dimensional electronic states change into two distinct topological phases with the insulating gap. One phase is well-known as quantum Hall states with chiral edge modes accompanying the Hall current, but the other one is an unconventional topological phase with helical edge modes in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.
It is shown that superfluids in two and three dimensions which have time reversal invariant ground states have phases which are distinguished by a topological invariant. Further, it is shown that the B-phase of $^3$ He is a superfluid in the non-trivial topological class. Superfluids in the non-trivial topological class are shown to have gapless edge states and support various kinds of vortices with zero energy modes localized in their cores. Some of these vortices have non-abelian statistics.
Chiral topological semimetals host multifold degenerate band crossing points under the protection of crystalline symmetries. In this paper, we suggest that the recently discovered chiral topological semimetals in space group 198, parts of which are superconducting upon doping, can be new candidates of time reversal invariant topological superconductors. By investigating the Fermi surfaces around the band crossing points that carry nonzero Chern numbers, we clarify how the nontrivial topology of chiral topological semimetals affects their superconducting state and show the existence of topologi…
We extend the coupled-wire construction of quantum Hall phases, and search for fractional topological insulating states in models of weakly coupled wires at zero external magnetic field. Focussing on systems beyond double copies of fractional quantum Hall states at opposite fields, we find that spin-spin interactions can stabilize a large family of fractional topological phases with broken time reversal invariance. The latter is manifest by spontaneous spin polarization, by a finite Hall conductivity, or by both. This suggests the possibility that fractional topological insulators may be unsta…
We report that the irreversible magnetization switching process in ferromagnetic nanoparticles is governed by the formation and dynamics of topological point-defects in the form of hedgehog-antihedgehog pairs. After nucleation, these pairs rapidly separate with speeds exceeding domain wall velocities, and they generate an emergent electric field of solenoidal character and substantial magnitude.
By employing T-matrix approach, we investigate a nonmagnetic impurity located on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators, where the time reversal symmetry is preserved. It is shown that the images of the local density of states (LDOS) around the single impurity have the dip-hump structures with six-fold symmetry at different bias voltages. The peaks are produced by quasiparticle interference while the local minima at the backscattering wave vectors are due to the absence of backscatterings. With increasing the bias voltage, the peaks and dips move forward to the location of the…
Time reversal invariant topological superconducting (TRITOPS) wires are known to host a fractional spin hbar/4 at their ends. We investigate how this fractional spin affects the Josephson current in a TRITOPS-quantum dot-TRITOPS Josephson junction, describing the wire in a model which can be tuned between a topological and a nontopological phase. We compute the equilibrium Josephson current of the full model by continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations and interpret the results within an effective low-energy theory. We show that in the topological phase, the 0-to-pi transition is quenched via fo…
Square-root topological phases have been discussed mainly for systems with chiral symmetry. In this paper, we analyze the topology of the squared Hamiltonian for systems preserving the time-reversal and particle-hole symmetry. Our analysis elucidates that two-dimensional systems of class CII host helical edge states due to the nontrivial topology of the squared Hamiltonian in contrast to the absence of ordinary topological phases. The emergence of the helical edge modes is demonstrated by analyzing a toy model. We also show the emergence of surface states induced by the non-trivial topology of…
The topological invariants of a time-reversal-invariant band structure in two dimensions are multiple copies of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant found by Kane and Mele. Such invariants protect the topological insulator and give rise to a spin Hall effect carried by edge states. Each pair of bands related by time reversal is described by a single $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, up to one less than half the dimension of the Bloch Hamiltonians. In three dimensions, there are four such invariants per band. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariants of a crystal determine the transitions between ordinary and topological …
We report direct imaging of standing waves of the nontrivial surface states of topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ by using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The interference fringes are caused by the scattering of the topological states off Ag impurities and step edges on the Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) surface. By studying the voltage-dependent standing wave patterns, we determine the energy dispersion $E(k)$, which confirms the Dirac cone structure of the topological states. We further show that, very different from the conventional surface states, the backscattering of the topological …
We study dynamics of the magnetization coupled to the surface Dirac fermions of a three di- mensional topological insulator. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the presence of charge current, we find current induced magnetization dynamics and discuss the possibility of mag- netization reversal. The torque from the current injection depends on the transmission probability through the ferromagnet and shows nontrivial dependence on the exchange coupling. The mag- netization dynamics is a direct manifestation of the inverse spin-galvanic effect and hence another ferromagnet is unne…
Recent topological band theory distinguishes electronic band insulators with respect to various symmetries and topological invariants, most commonly, the time reversal symmetry and the $\rm Z_2$ invariant. The interface of two topologically distinct insulators hosts a unique class of electronic states -- the helical states, which shortcut the gapped bulk and exhibit spin-momentum locking. The magic and so far elusive property of the helical electrons, known as topological protection, prevents them from coherent backscattering as long as the underlying symmetry is preserved. Here we present an …
We consider a Josephson bijunction consisting of a thin $SIS$ $π$-Josephson junction sandwiched between two-dimensional semiconducting layers with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Each of these layers forms an $SNS$ junction due to proximity-induced superconductivity. The $SIS$ junction is assumed to be thin enough such that the two Rashba layers are tunnel-coupled. We show that, by tuning external gates, this system can be controllably brought into a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting phase with a Kramers pair of Majorana bound states being localized at the end of the no…
We discuss the excitation spectra around the Dirac node on a surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. By using the diagrammatic expansion, we show that the coupling of an electron with the gauge field in the presence of impurity scatterings opens a gap around the Dirac node. The results are consistent with a recent experimental finding by T. Sato,et. al.[ Nature Phys. \textbf{7}, 840 (2011)]. We also discuss the consistency between the present results and the bulk-boundary correspondence of the topological insulator in the presence of time reversal symmetry. The conclusion can be …
We study magnetization reversal and first order reversal curves for two different magnetic topological semimetals, Co3Sn2S2 and Fe3GeTe2, in a wide temperature range. For the magnetization reversal, we observe strong temperature dependence of the initial (low-temperature) step-like magnetization switchings, so the inverted hysteresis appears at high temperatures. Usually, the inverted hysteresis is a fingerprint of material with two independent magnetic phases, the inversion reflects the phase interaction. First order reversal curve analysis confirms the two-phase behavior even at the lowest t…
We investigate a bilayer system of critical HgTe quantum wells each featuring a spin-degenerate pair of massless Dirac fermions. In the presence of an electrostatic inter-layer Coulomb coupling, we determine the exciton condensate order parameter of the system self-consistently. Calculating the bulk topological $\mathbb Z_2$ invariant of the resulting mean field Hamiltonian, we discover a novel time reversal symmetric topological exciton condensate state coined the helical topological exciton condensate. We argue that this phase can exist for experimentally relevant parameters. Interestingly, …
The strong time-reversal symmetric (TRS) topological insulator (TI) in three space dimensions features gapless surface states in the form of massless Dirac fermions. We study these surface states with the method of bosonization, and find that the resulting bosonic theory has a topological contribution due to the parity anomaly of the surface Dirac fermions. We argue that the presence of a quantum anomaly is, in fact, the main reason for the existence of a surface state, by the principle that anomalies of a surface and bulk must cancel. Inspecting other classes of topological insulators, we arg…
We study the topological properties and transport in the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model undergoing a slow quench between different topological regimes. Due to the closing of the band gap during the quench, the system ends up in an excited state. For quenches governed by a Hamiltonian that preserves the symmetries present in the BHZ model (time-reversal, inversion, and conservation of spin projection), the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant remains equal to the one evaluated in the initial state. The bulk spin Hall conductivity does change and its time average approaches that of the ground state of th…
We introduce $\mathbb Z_2$-valued bulk invariants for symmetry-protected topological phases in $2+1$ dimensional driven quantum systems. These invariants adapt the $W_3$-invariant, expressed as a sum over degeneracy points of the propagator, to the respective symmetry class of the Floquet-Bloch Hamiltonian. The bulk-boundary correspondence that holds for each invariant relates a non-zero value of the bulk invariant to the existence of symmetry-protected topological boundary states. To demonstrate this correspondence we apply our invariants to a chiral Harper, time-reversal Kane-Mele, and parti…
We study all the possible different two terminal configurations of Josephson junctions containing wires of time-reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS) and ordinary superconductors, including combinations with an interacting quantum dot between both wires in the junction. We introduce simple effective Hamiltonians which explain the different qualitative behaviors obtained. We analyze a wide range of phenomena, including occurrence and quenching of the so called $0-π$ transition, anomalous periodicity and jumps of the Josephson current as a function of the phase difference, and…
Motivated by the very recent experimental realization of electronic Lieb lattices and research interest on topological states of matter, we study the topological phase transitions driven by Anderson disorder on spin-orbit coupled Lieb lattices in the presence of spin-independent and dependent potentials. By combining the numerical transport and self-consistent Born approximation methods, we found that both time-reversal invariant and broken Lieb lattices can host disorder-induced gapful topological phases, including the quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) and quantum anomalous Hall insulator (Q…
It has been proposed that band-inverted electron-hole bilayers support a phase transition from an insulating phase with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry to a quantum spin Hall insulator phase as a function of increasing electron and hole densities. Here, we show that in the presence of proximity-induced superconductivity it is possible to realize Majorana zero modes in the time-reversal symmetry broken phase in the absence of magnetic field. We develop an effective low-energy theory for the system in the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking order parameter to obtain analytica…
A 3D fermionic topological insulator has a gapless Dirac surface state protected by time-reversal symmetry and charge conservation symmetry. The surface state can be gapped by introducing ferromagnetism to break time-reversal symmetry, introducing superconductivity to break charge conservation, or entering a topological phase. In this paper, we construct a minimal gapped topological phase that preserves both time-reversal and charge conservation symmetries and supports Ising-type non-Abelian anyons. This phase can be understood heuristically as emerging from a surface s-wave superconducting st…
We consider a natural generalization of the lattice model for a periodic array of two layers, A and B, of spinless electrons proposed by Fu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 106802 (2011)] as a prototype for a crystalline insulator. This model has time-reversal symmetry and broken inversion symmetry. We show that when the intralayer next-nearest-neighbor hoppings ta2, a = A, B vanish, this model supports a Weyl semimetal phase for a wide range of the remaining model parameters. When the effect of ta2 is considered, topological crystalline insulating phases take place within the Weyl semimetal one. By map…
A one dimensional time reversal symmetric topological superconductor (symmetry class DIII) features a single Kramers pair of Majorana bound states at each of its ends. These holographic quasiparticles are non-Abelian anyons that obey Ising-type braiding statistics. In the special case where an additional U(1) spin rotation symmetry is present, this state can be understood as two copies of a Majorana wire in symmetry class D, one copy for each spin block. We present a manifestly gauge invariant construction of the topological invariant for the generic case, i.e., in the absence of any additiona…
Occurrence of topological Anderson insulator (TAI) in HgTe quantum well suggests that when time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is maintained, the pertinent topological phase transition, marked by re-entrant $2e^2/h$ quantized conductance contributed by helical edge states, is driven by disorder. Here we show that when TRS is broken, the physics of TAI becomes even richer. The pattern of longitudinal conductance and nonequilibrium local current %Unlike for conventional topological insulators that, in the %absence of an external magnetic field, support only a single quantized %conductance in the quantu…
We propose a one-dimensional Floquet ladder that possesses two distinct topological transport channels with opposite directionality. The transport channels occur due to a $\mathbb Z_2$ non-Hermitian Floquet topological phase that is protected by time-reversal symmetry. The signatures of this phase are two pairs of Kramers degenerate Floquet quasienergy bands that are separated by an imaginary gap. We discuss how the Floquet ladder can be implemented in a photonic waveguide lattice and show that the direction of transport in the resulting waveguide structure can be externally controlled by focu…
We study the scattering of the Dirac electrons by a point-like nonmagnetic impurity on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic gate voltage. It is found that, due to the doublet degenerate crossing points of different Floquet sidebands, resonant backscattering can happen for the surface electrons, even without breaking the time-reversal (TR) symmetry of the topological surface states (TSSs). The energy spectrum is reshuffled in a way quite different from that for the circularly polarized light, so that new features are exhibited in the Friedel oscillations of the loca…
Gapless surface states of time reversal invariant topological insulators are protected by the anti-unitary nature of the time reversal operation. Very recently, this idea was generalized to magnetic structures, in which time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, but there is still an anti-unitary symmetry operation combining time reversal symmetry and crystalline symmetry. These topological phases in magnetic structures are dubbed "topological magnetic crystalline insulators". In this work, we present a general theory of topological magnetic crystalline insulators in different types of magne…
Studying the influence of breaking time-reversal symmetry on topological insulator surface states is an important problem of current interest in condensed matter physics and could provide a route toward proof-of-concept spintronic devices that exploit spin-textured surface states. Here, we develop a new model system for studying the effect of breaking time-reversal symmetry: a hybrid heterostructure wherein a ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga1-xMnxAs, with an out-of-plane component of magnetization, is cleanly interfaced with a three-dimensional topological insulator (Bi,Sb)2(Te,Se)3 by molecular…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), the last member of Hall family, was predicted to exhibit quantized Hall conductivity e2/h without any external magnetic field. The QAHE shares a similar physical phenomenon with the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), whereas its physical origin relies on the intrinsic topological inverted band structure and ferromagnetism. Since the QAHE does not require external energy input in the form of magnetic field, it is believed that this effect has unique potential for applications in future electronic devices with low-power consumption. More recently, the QA…
The $Z_2$ invariant for filled bands in the ground states of systems with time reversal invariance characterizes the number of stable pairs of edge states. Here we study the $Z_2 $ invariant using band touching methods discussed in a recent previous work \cite{roy2006zcq} and extend the study to three dimensions. Band collisions preserve the $Z_2 $ invariant both in two and three dimensions, but there are crucial differences in the two cases. In three dimensions,we find a novel fourth $Z_2 $ invariant which is characterized by a "trapped monopole" in momentum space. If the monopole charge in h…
We consider a disordered topological insulator thin film placed on the top of a ferromagnetic insulator with a perpendicular exchange field $M$ and subjected to a perpendicular electric field. The presence of ferromagnetic insulator causes that bottom surface states of the topological insulator thin film become spin polarized and the electric field provides a potential difference $V$ between the two surface states, resulting in breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry in the system. Using Kubo formalism and employing the first Born approximation as well as the self-consistent Born appr…
We address the question of whether individual nonmagnetic impurities can induce zero-energy states in time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, and define a class of symmetries which guarantee the existence of such states for a specific value of the impurity strength. These symmetries allow the definition of a position-space topological Z_2 invariant, which is related to the standard bulk topological Z_2 invariant. Our general results are applied to the time-reversal-invariant p-wave phase of the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model, where we demonstrate how a lattice of impurities can dri…
We theoretically study a time-reversal-invariant three-dimensional superfluid model by stacking in $z$ direction identical bilayer models with intralayer spin-orbit coupling and contrary Zeeman energy splitting for different layer, which has been suggested recently to realize two-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superfluid. We find that this model shows two kinds of topologically nontrivial phases: gapless phases with nodal lines in pairs protected by chiral symmetry and a gapped phase, both of which support time-reversal-invariant Majorana Fermi arc (MFA) on the $yz$ and $xz$ s…
Here we report the reserved anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the 5-septuple-layer van der Waals device of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. By employing the top/bottom gate, a negative AHE loop gradually decreases to zero and changes to a reversed sign. The reversed AHE exhibits distinct coercive fields and temperature dependence from the previous AHE. It reaches the maximum inside the gap of the Dirac cone. The newly-seen reversed AHE is attributed to the competition of the intrinsic Berry curvature and the Dirac-gap enhanced extrinsic skew scattering. Its gate-controlled s…
We prove that a system of non-interacting electrons proximity coupled to a conventional s-wave superconductor cannot realize a time reversal invariant topological phase. This is done by showing that for such a system, in either one or two dimensions, the topological invariant of the corresponding symmetry class (DIII) is always trivial. Our results suggest that the pursuit of Majorana bound states in time-reversal invariant systems should be aimed at interacting systems or at proximity to unconventional superconductors.
Topological band insulators (TBIs) are bulk insulating materials which feature topologically protected metallic states on their boundary. The existing classification departs from time-reversal symmetry, but the role of the crystal lattice symmetries in the physics of these topological states remained elusive. Here we provide the classification of TBIs protected not only by time-reversal, but also by crystalline symmetries. We find three broad classes of topological states: (a) Gamma-states robust against general time-reversal invariant perturbations; (b) Translationally-active states protected…
We investigate Andreev reflection in two-dimensional heterojunctions formed by a superconductor in contact with a topological insulator ribbon either possessing or breaking time-reversal symmetry. Both classes of topological insulators exhibit perfect Andreev reflection, which is robust against disorder. This is assigned to topologically protected edge states. In the time-reversal symmetric case we show that doping one of the ribbon edges with magnetic impurities suppresses one Andreev channel, while no such suppression is seen in the broken symmetry situation. Based on this observation we sug…
We numerically evaluate the entanglement spectrum (singular value decomposition of the wavefunction) of paired states of fermions in two dimensions that break parity and time-reversal symmetries, focusing on the spin-polarized $p_x+ip_y$ case. The entanglement spectrum of the weak-pairing (BCS) phase contains a Majorana zero mode, indicating non-Abelian topological order. In contrast, for the strong-pairing (BEC) phase, we find no such mode, consistent with Abelian topological order.
The gapless surface Dirac cone of time reversal invariant topological insulators is protected by time reversal symmetry due to the Kramers' theorem. Spin degree of freedom is usually required since Kramers' theorem only guarantees double degeneracy for spinful fermions, but not for spinless fermions. In this paper, we present an antiferromagnetic spinless model, which breaks time reversal symmetry. Similar to time reversal invariant topological insulators, this model possesses a topologically non-trivial phase with a single surface Dirac cone, which is protected by the combination of time reve…
We study spinful non-interacting electrons moving in two-dimensional materials which exhibit a spectral gap about the Fermi energy as well as time-reversal invariance. Using Fredholm theory we revisit the (known) bulk topological invariant, define a new one for the edge, and show their equivalence (the bulk-edge correspondence) via homotopy.
We calculate supercurrent across a two-dimensional topological insulator subjected to an external magnetic field. When the edge states of a narrow two-dimensional topological insulator are hybridized, an external magnetic field can close the hybridization gap, thus driving a quantum phase transition from insulator to semimetal states of the topological insulator. We find a sign reversal of the supercurrent at the quantum phase transition revealing intrinsic properties of topological insulators via Josephson effect.
The ensemble geometric phase (EGP) has been proposed as a topological indicator for finite-temperatures systems. The ensemble Wilson loop, or the transfer matrix, contains the crucial information in the EGP construction. We propose a proxy index and a proxy EGP directly from the transfer matrix and apply them to time-reversal invariant topological insulators exemplified by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) and Kane-Mele (KM) models. The quantized proxy index and proxy EGP smoothly generalize the ground-state topological index to finite temperatures. For the BHZ model, a comparison with another t…
In this work, we studied time-reversal-breaking topological phases as a result of the interplay between antiferromagnetism and inverted band structures in thin films of antiferromagnetic double perovskite transition-metal Sr$_2$FeOsO$_6$. By combining the first-principles calculations and analytical models, we demonstrate that the quantum anomalous Hall phase and chiral topological superconducting phase can be realized in this system. We find that to achieve time-reversal-breaking topological phases in antiferromagnetic materials, it is essential to break the combined symmetry of time reversal…
Many proposals to generate a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting phase are based on imposing a $π$ phase difference between the superconducting leads proximitizing a nanostructure. We show that this phase can be induced on a thin film of a topological insulator like Bi$_2$Se$_3$ in proximity to a single s-wave superconductor. In our analysis we take into account the parity degree of freedom of the electronic states which is not included in effective Dirac-like surface theories. We find that the topological phase can be reached when the induced interparity pairing dominates over…
Time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors have a full paring gap in the bulk and gapless Majorana states at the edge or on the surface. Here, we theoretically propose topological superconductivity in a doped quantum spin Hall insulator. We study the pairing symmetry of doped Sn$X$ film within a two-orbital model, and show that it realizes a topological superconductor when the intraorbital attractive interaction is stronger than the interorbital interaction, which is generic for a doped quantum spin Hall insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling. Edge channels are studied in a tight-b…
We present a class of time-reversal-symmetric fractional topological liquid states in two dimensions that support fractionalized excitations. These are incompressible liquids made of electrons, for which the charge Hall conductance vanishes and the spin Hall conductance needs not be quantized. We then analyze the stability of edge states in these two-dimensional topological fluids against localization by disorder. We find a Z_2 stability criterion for whether or not there exists a Kramers pair of edge modes that is robust against disorder. We also introduce an interacting electronic two-dimens…

Topological insulators are a broad class of unconventional materials that are insulating in the interior but conduct along the edges. This edge transport is topologically protected and dissipationless. Until recently, all existing topological insulators, known as quantum Hall states, violated time-reversal symmetry. However, the discovery of the quantum spin Hall effect demonstrated the existence of novel topological states not rooted in time-reversal violations. Here, we lay out an experiment to realize time-reversal topological insulators in ultra-cold atomic gases subjected to synthetic gau…
We explore the 32 crystallographic point groups and identify topological phases of matter with robust surface modes. For n =3,4 and 6 of the C_{nv} groups, we find the first-known 3D topological insulators without spin-orbit coupling, and with surface modes that are protected only by point groups, i.e., not needing time-reversal symmetry. To describe these C_{nv} systems, we introduce the notions of (a) a halved mirror chirality: an integer invariant which characterizes half-mirror-planes in the 3D Brillouin zone, and (b) a bent Chern number: the traditional TKNN invariant generalized to bent …
The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show i…
