It is shown that superfluids in two and three dimensions which have time reversal invariant ground states have phases which are distinguished by a topological invariant. Further, it is shown that the B-phase of $^3$ He is a superfluid in the non-trivial topological class. Superfluids in the non-trivial topological class are shown to have gapless edge states and support various kinds of vortices with zero energy modes localized in their cores. Some of these vortices have non-abelian statistics.
We theoretically study a time-reversal-invariant three-dimensional superfluid model by stacking in $z$ direction identical bilayer models with intralayer spin-orbit coupling and contrary Zeeman energy splitting for different layer, which has been suggested recently to realize two-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superfluid. We find that this model shows two kinds of topologically nontrivial phases: gapless phases with nodal lines in pairs protected by chiral symmetry and a gapped phase, both of which support time-reversal-invariant Majorana Fermi arc (MFA) on the $yz$ and $xz$ s…
Topological metals possess gapless band structures accompanied with nontrivial edge states. Topological metals are created from the topological insulators by adjusting the magnetic flux. Here we propose the time-reversal symmetry protected topological metal without employing the magnetic flux. Topological metallic phase presents although the Chern number vanishes. In the topologically nontrivial phase, three different cases in the metallic phase are distinguished from the band-touching and in-gap features of the topological edge states. These findings shed light on the time-reversal symmetric …
We find a new class of topological superconductors which possess an emergent time-reversal symmetry that is present only after projecting to an effective low-dimensional model. We show that a topological phase in symmetry class DIII can be realized in a noninteracting system coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor only if the physical time-reversal symmetry of the system is broken, and we provide three general criteria that must be satisfied in order to have such a phase. We also provide an explicit model which realizes the class DIII topological superconductor in 1D. We show that, just as in ti…
One of the hallmarks of time-reversal-symmetric topological insulators in three dimensions is the topological magnetoelectric effect (TME). So far, a time-reversal breaking variant of this effect has attracted much attention, in the sense that the induced electric charge changes sign when the direction of an externally applied magnetic field is reversed. Theoretically, this effect is described by the so-called axion term. Here, we discuss a time-reversal-symmetric TME, where the electric charge depends only on the magnitude of the magnetic field but is independent of its sign. We obtain this n…
We investigate the topological phase derived by time-reversal breaking fields in a nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected two-dimensional Dirac semimetal. When the nonsymmorphic symmetry is preserved even in the presence of the field, the two-dimensional electronic states change into two distinct topological phases with the insulating gap. One phase is well-known as quantum Hall states with chiral edge modes accompanying the Hall current, but the other one is an unconventional topological phase with helical edge modes in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.
Spin superfluids enable long-distance spin transport through classical ferromagnets by developing topologically stable magnetic textures. For small spins at low dimensions, however, the topological protection suffers from strong quantum fluctuations. We study the remanence of spin superfluidity inherited from the classical magnet by considering the two-terminal spin transport through a finite spin-1/2 magnetic chain with planar exchange. By fermionizing the system, we recast the spin-transport problem in terms of quasiparticle transmission through a superconducting region. We show that the top…
We present a scheme of interaction-induced topological bandstructures based on the spin anisotropy of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. We predict theoretically that this scheme allows the engineering of topological gaps, without requiring a magnetic field or strong spin-orbit interaction (transverse electric-transverse magnetic splitting). Under non-resonant pumping, we find that an initially topologically trivial system undergoes a topological transition upon the spontaneous breaking of phase symmetry associated with polariton condensation. Under resonant coherent pumping, w…
Chiral topological semimetals host multifold degenerate band crossing points under the protection of crystalline symmetries. In this paper, we suggest that the recently discovered chiral topological semimetals in space group 198, parts of which are superconducting upon doping, can be new candidates of time reversal invariant topological superconductors. By investigating the Fermi surfaces around the band crossing points that carry nonzero Chern numbers, we clarify how the nontrivial topology of chiral topological semimetals affects their superconducting state and show the existence of topologi…
Topological superfluids protected by mirror and time-reversal symmetries are exotic states of matter possessing Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs), yet their realizations have long been hindered by the requirement of unconventional pairing. We propose to realize such a topological superfluid by utilizing $s$-wave pairing and emergent mirror and time-reversal symmetries in two coupled 1D ultracold atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling. By stacking such systems into 2D, we discover topological and Dirac-nodal superfluids hosting distinct MKP flat bands. We show that the emergent symmetries make…
The superposition of topological phonons and flexoelectronic charge separation in an inhomogeneously strain Si give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonons. The topological electronic magnetism of phonons is also expected to give rise to stationary spin current or spin superfluidity. In this experimental study, we present possible evidence of spin superfluidity in an inhomogeneously strained p-Si thin films samples. The spin superfluidity is uncovered using non-local resistance measurement. A resonance behavior is observed in a non-local resistance measurement at 10 kHz and between…
By solving the Bogoliubov--De Gennes equations analytically, we derive the fermionic zero-modes satisfying the Majorana property that exist in vortices of a two-dimensional $s$-wave Fermi superfluid with spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman spin-splitting. The Majorana zero-mode becomes normalisable and exponentially localised to the vicinity of the vortex core when the superfluid is topologically non-trivial. We calculate the energy splitting due to Majorana hybridisation and identify that the $s$-wave Majorana vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.
We prove that a system of non-interacting electrons proximity coupled to a conventional s-wave superconductor cannot realize a time reversal invariant topological phase. This is done by showing that for such a system, in either one or two dimensions, the topological invariant of the corresponding symmetry class (DIII) is always trivial. Our results suggest that the pursuit of Majorana bound states in time-reversal invariant systems should be aimed at interacting systems or at proximity to unconventional superconductors.
We show that certain singularities of the Hamiltonian in the complex wave vector space can be used to identify topological quantum phase transitions for $1D$ chiral topological superconductors/superfluids in the BDI class. These singularities fall into the category of the so-called exceptional points ($EP$'s) studied in the context of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing open quantum systems. We also propose a generic formula in terms of the properties of the $EP$'s to quantify the exact number of Majorana zero modes in a particular chiral topological superconducting phase, given the values o…
We study spinful non-interacting electrons moving in two-dimensional materials which exhibit a spectral gap about the Fermi energy as well as time-reversal invariance. Using Fredholm theory we revisit the (known) bulk topological invariant, define a new one for the edge, and show their equivalence (the bulk-edge correspondence) via homotopy.
In this work, we studied time-reversal-breaking topological phases as a result of the interplay between antiferromagnetism and inverted band structures in thin films of antiferromagnetic double perovskite transition-metal Sr$_2$FeOsO$_6$. By combining the first-principles calculations and analytical models, we demonstrate that the quantum anomalous Hall phase and chiral topological superconducting phase can be realized in this system. We find that to achieve time-reversal-breaking topological phases in antiferromagnetic materials, it is essential to break the combined symmetry of time reversal…
We theoretically search for dynamical cross-correlated responses of three-dimensional topological superconductors and superfluids. It has been suggested that a gravitational topological term, which is analogous to the theta term in topological insulators, can be derived in three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors and superfluids, and that the dynamical gravitational axion field can be realized by the fluctuation of the relative phase, i.e., by the Leggett mode between topological $p$-wave pairing and conventional $s$-wave pairing. In the presence of the dynamical g…
We study disordered topological insulators with time reversal symmetry. Relying on the noncommutative index theorem which relates the Chern number to the projection onto the Fermi sea and the magnetic flux operator, we give a precise definition of the $Z_2$ index which is a noncommutative analogue of the Atiyah-Singer $Z_2$ index. We prove that the noncommutative $Z_2$ index is robust against any time-reversal symmetric perturbation including disorder potentials as long as the spectral gap at the Fermi level does not close.
