We present a formal connection between Lagrangian and Eulerian velocity increment distributions which is applicable to a wide range of turbulent systems ranging from turbulence in incompressible fluids to magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. For the case of the inverse cascade regime of two-dimensional turbulence we numerically estimate the transition probabilities involved in this connection. In this context we are able to directly identify the processes leading to strongly non-Gaussian statistics for the Lagrangian velocity increments.
We report a detailed study of Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics from high resolution Direct Numerical Simulations of isotropic weakly compressible turbulence. Reynolds number at the Taylor microscale is estimated to be around 600. Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics is evaluated over a huge data set, made by $1856^3$ spatial collocation points and by 16 million particles, followed for about one large-scale eddy turn over time. We present data for Eulerian and Lagrangian Structure functions up to ten order. We analyse the local scaling properties in the inertial range and in the viscous range. …
The Lagrangian and Eulerian transversal velocity structure functions of fully developed fluid turbulence are found basing on the Navier-Stokes equation. The structure functions are shown to obey the scaling relations inside the inertial range. The scaling exponents are calculated analytically without using dimensional considerations. The obtained values are in a very good agreement with recent numerical and experimental data.
Conditional statistics of homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow is investigated by means of high-Reynolds number direct numerical simulations performed with $2048^3$ collocation points. Eulerian as well as Lagrangian velocity increment statistics under several conditions are analyzed and compared. In agreement with experimental data longitudinal probability density functions $P(δ^{||}_l u|ε_l)$ conditioned on a scale-averaged energy dissipation rate are close to Gaussian distributions over all scales within the inertial range of scales. Also transverse increments conditioned on either the dissi…
The aim of the present paper is to introduce and to discuss inconsistencies errors that may arise when Eulerian and Lagrangian models are coupled for the simulations of turbulent poly-dispersed two-phase flows. In these hydrid models, two turbulence models are in fact implicitely used at the same time and it is essential to check that they are consistent, in spite of their apparent different formulations. This issue appears in particular in the case of very-small particles, or tracer-limit particles, and it is shown that coupling inconsistent turbulence models (Eulerian and Lagrangian) can res…
The fluid structure interaction of cylinders in tandem arrangement is used as validation basis of a multi-domain Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid flow solver. In this hybrid combination, separate grids of limited width are defined around every solid body, on which the Eulerian flow equations are solved using finite volume approximations. In order to interconnect the domains defined by the grids, the entire flow is described in Lagrangian coordinates and the corresponding equations are solved via particle approximations in fully coupled mode with the solutions within the Eulerian grids. The flow solv…
The fractal dimension of a liquid column is a crucial parameter in several models describing the main features of the primary break-up occurring at the interface of a liquid phase surrounded by the gas-flow. In this work, the deformation of the liquid phase has been numerically studied. The gas-phase is computed as a continuum in an Eulerian frame while the liquid phase is discretized in droplets Lagrangian tracked and coupled via the momentum equation with the surrounding gas flow. The interface is transported by the flow field generated because of the particle forcing and it is numerically c…
In Lagrangian turbulence one is faced with the puzzle that 2D Navier-Stokes flows are nearly as intermittent as in three dimensions although no intermittency is present in the inverse cascade in 2D Eulerian turbulence. In addition, an inertial range is very difficult to detect and it is questionable whether it exists at all. Here, we investigate the transition of Eulerian to Lagrangian probability density functions (PDFs) which leads to a new type of Lagrangian structure function. This possesses an extended inertial range similar to the case of tracer particles in a frozen turbulent velocity f…
We derive a non-dimensional metric to quantify the expected Lagrangian persistence of objectively defined Eulerian vortices in two-dimensional unsteady flows. This persistence metric is the averaged deviation of the vorticity from its spatial mean over the Eulerian vortex, normalized by the instantaneous material leakage from the Eulerian vortex. The metric offers a model-independent and frame-independent tool for uncovering the instantaneous Eulerian signature of long-lived Lagrangian vortices. Using satellite-derived ocean velocity data, we show that Lagrangian vortex-persistence predictions…
We use particle tracking velocimetry to study Eulerian and Lagrangian second-order statistics of superfluid $^4$He grid turbulence. The Eulerian energy spectra at scales larger than the mean distance between quantum vortex lines behave classically with close to Kolmogorov-1941 scaling and are almost isotropic. The Lagrangian second-order structure functions and frequency power spectra, measured at scales comparable with the intervortex distance, demonstrate a sharp transition from nearly-classical behavior to a regime dominated by the motion of quantum vortex lines. Employing the homogeneity o…
We present a unique pipe flow rig capable where simultaneous particle tracking and flow velocity measurements in a dilute, neutrally buoyant particulate pipe flow in regimes of transition to turbulence. The flow consists of solid glass spheres for the disperse phase, and a density-matching fluid for the carrier phase. The measurements are conducted using a bespoke, combined 2D PIV/ PTV technique. The technique takes advantage of a phase discrimination approach that involves separating the disperse and carrier phases based on their respective image characteristics. Our results show that the rig…
The Lagrangian (LA) and Eulerian Acceleration (EA) properties of fluid particles in homogeneous turbulence with uniform shear and uniform stable stratification are studied using direct numerical simulations. The Richardson number is varied from $Ri=0$, corresponding to unstratified shear flow, to $Ri=1$, corresponding to strongly stratified shear flow. The probability density functions (pdfs) of both LA and EA have a stretched-exponential shape and they show a strong and similar influence on the Richardson number. The extreme values of the EA are stronger than those observed for the LA. Geomet…
We analyze acoustic streaming flows using an ALE perspective. The formulation stems from an explicit separation of time-scales resulting in two subproblems: a first-order problem, formulated in terms of the fluid displacement at the fast scale, and a second-order problem formulated in terms of the Lagrangian flow velocity at the slow time scale. Following a rigorous time-averaging procedure, the second-order problem is shown to be intrinsically steady, and with exact boundary conditions at the oscillating walls. Also, as the second-order problem is solved directly for the Lagrangian velocity, …
This paper proposes an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian incompressible finite volume scheme based on Consistent Flux Reconstruction method (ALE-CFR) on deforming two-dimensional unstructured triangular grids. The scheme is further applied to solve for a problem of two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow past a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder when subjected to forced transverse oscillations at Re = 100. The paper first focuses on the mathematical development and validation of the ALE-CFR scheme and then its application on the problem. The rotational oscillation frequencies were take…
We present a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method to simulate cloud cavitation in a compressible liquid. The method is designed to capture the strong, volumetric oscillations of each bubble and the bubble-scattered acoustics. The dynamics of the bubbly mixture is formulated using volume-averaged equations of motion. The continuous phase is discretized on an Eulerian grid and integrated using a high-order, finite-volume weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, while the gas phase is modeled as spherical, Lagrangian point-bubbles at the sub-grid scale, each of whose radial evolution is …
A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian solver RYrhoCentralFoam is developed based on OpenFOAM to simulate detonative combustion in two-phase gas-liquid mixtures. For Eulerian gas phase, RYrhoCentralFoam enjoys second order of accuracy in time and space discretizations and is based on finite volume method on polyhedral cells. The following developments are made based on the standard compressible flow solver rhoCentralFoam in OpenFOAM: (1) multi-component species transport, (2) detailed fuel chemistry for gas phase combustion, and (3) Lagrangian solver for gas-droplet two-phase flows and sub-models for li…
An explicit high order semi-Lagrangian method is developed for solving Lagrangian transport equations in Eulerian-Lagrangian formulations. To ensure a semi-Lagrangian approximation that is consistent with an explicit Eulerian, discontinuous spectral element method (DSEM) discretization used for the Eulerian formulation, Lagrangian particles are seeded at Gauss quadrature collocation nodes within an element. The particles are integrated explicitly in time to obtain an advected polynomial solution at the advected Gauss quadrature locations. This approximation is mapped back in a semi-Lagrangian …
New generalized equations of motion for the Weber-Clebsch potentials that describe both the Navier-Stokes and MHD dynamics are derived. These depend on a new parameter, which has dimensions of time for Navier-Stokes and inverse velocity for MHD. Direct numerical simulations are performed. For Navier-Stokes, the generalized formalism captures the intense reconnection of vortices of the Boratav, Pelz and Zabusky flow, in agreement with the previous study by Ohkitani and Constantin. For MHD, the new formalism is used to detect magnetic reconnection in several flows: the 3D Arnold, Beltrami and Ch…
We study the correlation function and mean linear response function of the velocity Fourier mode of statistically steady-state, homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in the Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates through direct numerical simulation (DNS). As the Lagrangian velocity, we here adopt Kraichnan's Lagrangian history framework where Lagrangian particles are labelled with current positions and their velocity are measured at some time before. This Lagrangian velocity is numerically calculated with a method known as passive vector method. Our first goal is to study relation between the corre…
We revisit the issue of Lagrangian irreversibility in the context of recent results [Xu, et al., PNAS, 111, 7558 (2014)] on flight-crash events in turbulent flows and show how extreme events in the Eulerian dissipation statistics are related to the statistics of power-fluctuations for tracer trajectories. Surprisingly, we find that particle trajectories in intense dissipation zones are dominated by energy gains sharper than energy losses, contrary to flight-crashes, through a pressure-gradient driven take-off phenomenon. Our conclusions are rationalised by analysing data from simulations of th…
There are two main strategies for improving the projection-based reduced order model (ROM) accuracy: (i) improving the ROM, i.e., adding new terms to the standard ROM; and (ii) improving the ROM basis, i.e., constructing ROM bases that yield more accurate ROMs. In this paper, we use the latter. We propose new Lagrangian inner products that we use together with Eulerian and Lagrangian data to construct new Lagrangian ROMs. We show that the new Lagrangian ROMs are orders of magnitude more accurate than the standard Eulerian ROMs, i.e., ROMs that use standard Eulerian inner product and data to co…
Motivated by theoretical studies of gravitational clustering in the Universe, we compute propagators (response functions) in the adhesion model. This model, which is able to reproduce the skeleton of the cosmic web and includes nonlinear effects in both Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks, also corresponds to the Burgers equation of hydrodynamics. Focusing on the one-dimensional case with power-law initial conditions, we obtain exact results for Eulerian and Lagrangian propagators. We find that Eulerian propagators can be expressed in terms of the one-point velocity probability distribution and…
This work derives how the convergence of stochastic Lagrangian/Eulerian simulations depends on the number of computational parcels, particularly for the case of spray modeling. A new, simple, formula is derived that can be used for managing the numerical error in two or three dimensional computational studies. For example, keeping the number of parcels per cell constant as the mesh is refined yields an order one-half convergence rate in transient spray simulations. First order convergence would require a doubling of the number of parcels per cell when the cell size is halved. Second order conv…
We study the properties of various Eulerian contributions to fluid particle acceleration by using well-resolved direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence, with the grid resolution as high as $12288^3$ and the Taylor-scale Reynolds number $R_λ$ in the range between 140 and 1300. The variance of convective acceleration, when normalized by Kolmogorov scales, increases linearly with $R_λ$, consistent with simple theoretical arguments, but very strongly differing from phenomenological predictions of Kolmogorov's hypothesis as well as Eulerian multifractal models. The scaling of the local…
A new geometrically conservative arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation is presented for the moving boundary problems in the swirl-free cylindrical coordinates. The governing equations are multiplied with the radial distance and integrated over arbitrary moving Lagrangian-Eulerian quadrilateral elements. Therefore, the continuity and the geometric conservation equations take very simple form similar to those of the Cartesian coordinates. The continuity equation is satisfied exactly within each element and a special attention is given to satisfy the geometric conservation law (GCL) at …
A phenomenological theory of the fluctuations of velocity occurring in a fully developed homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow is presented. The focus is made on the fluctuations of the spatial (Eulerian) and temporal (Lagrangian) velocity increments. The universal nature of the intermittency phenomenon as observed in experimental measurements and numerical simulations is shown to be fully taken into account by the multiscale picture proposed by the multifractal formalism, and its extensions to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian framework. The article is devoted to the presentatio…
Rotating detonation combustion (RDC) fuelled with partially pre-vaporized n-heptane sprays and gaseous hydrogen is studied with an Eulerian-Lagrangian method. Our focus is the effects of pre-vaporized n-heptane equivalence ratios and droplet diameters on detonation wave propagation and droplet dynamics in two-phase RDC. The results show that when the droplets are small, they are fully vaporized by the detonation wave. However, when the droplet diameter is relatively large and/or the detonation wave number is bifurcated, liquid droplets are observable beyond the refill zone. Moreover, the deton…
We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of passive heavy inertial particles (dust) in homogeneous and isotropic two-dimensional turbulent flows (gas) for a range of Stokes number, ${\rm St} < 1$, using both Lagrangian and Eulerian approach (with a shock-capturing scheme). We find that: The dust-density field in our Eulerian simulations have the same correlation dimension $d_2$ as obtained from the clustering of particles in the Lagrangian simulations for ${\rm St} < 1$; The cumulative probability distribution function of the dust-density coarse-grained over a scale $r$ in the inertial ra…
Because different constraints are imposed, stability conditions for dissipationless fluids and magnetofluids may take different forms when derived within the Lagrangian, Eulerian (energy-Casimir), or dynamical accessible frameworks. This is in particular the case when flows are present. These differences are explored explicitly by working out in detail two magnetohydrodynamic examples: convection against gravity in a stratified fluid and translationally invariant perturbations of a rotating magnetized plasma pinch. In this second example we show in explicit form how to perform the time-depende…
In this paper we employ two implementations of the fictitious domain (FD) method to simulate water-entry and water-exit problems and demonstrate their ability to simulate practical marine engineering problems. In FD methods, the fluid momentum equation is extended within the solid domain using an additional body force that constrains the structure velocity to be that of a rigid body. Using this formulation, a single set of equations is solved over the entire computational domain. The constraint force is calculated in two distinct ways: one using an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework of the immersed…
We present a systematic study of the influence of different forcing types on the statistical properties of supersonic, isothermal turbulence in both the Lagrangian and Eulerian frameworks. We analyse a series of high-resolution, hydrodynamical grid simulations with Lagrangian tracer particles and examine the effects of solenoidal (divergence-free) and compressive (curl-free) forcing on structure functions, their scaling exponents, and the probability density functions of the gas density and velocity increments. Compressively driven simulations show a significantly larger density contrast, a mo…
Turbulence is argued to play a crucial role in cloud droplet growth. The combined problem of turbulence and cloud droplet growth is numerically challenging. Here, an Eulerian scheme based on the Smoluchowski equation is compared with two Lagrangian superparticle (or su- perdroplet) schemes in the presence of condensation and collection. The growth processes are studied either separately or in combination using either two-dimensional turbulence, a steady flow, or just gravitational acceleration without gas flow. Good agreement between the differ- ent schemes for the time evolution of the size s…
In this paper we describe the construction of an efficient probabilistic parameterization that could be used in a coarse-resolution numerical model in which the variation of moisture is not properly resolved. An Eulerian model using a coarse-grained field on a grid cannot properly resolve regions of saturation---in which condensation occurs---that are smaller than the grid boxes. Thus, in the absence of a parameterization scheme, either the grid box must become saturated or condensation will be underestimated. On the other hand, in a stochastic Lagrangian model of moisture transport, trajector…
Based on geometric considerations, longitudinal and transverse Lagrangian velocity increments are introduced as components along, and perpendicular to, the displacement of fluid particles during a time scale τ. It is argued that these two increments probe preferentially the stretching and spinning of material fluid elements, respectively. This property is confirmed (in the limit of vanishing τ) by examining the variances of these increments conditioned on the local topology of the flow. Interestingly, these longitudinal and transverse Lagrangian increments are found to share some qualitative f…
Using the wave equation as an example, it is shown how to extend the hydrodynamic Lagrangian-picture method of constructing field evolution using a continuum of trajectories to second-order theories. The wave equation is represented through Eulerian-picture models that are distinguished by their Lorentz transformation properties. Introducing the idea of the relativity of the particle label, it is demonstrated how the corresponding trajectory models are compatible with the relativity principle. It is also shown how the Eulerian variational formulation may be obtained by canonical transformation…
In the first part of this paper we establish a uniqueness result for continuity equations with velocity field whose derivative can be represented by a singular integral operator of an $L^1$ function, extending the Lagrangian theory in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. The proof is based on a combination of a stability estimate via optimal transport techniques developed in \cite{Seis16a} and some tools from harmonic analysis introduced in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. In the second part of the paper, we address a question that arose in \cite{FilhoMazzucatoNussenzveig06}, namely whether 2D Euler solutions obtai…
We propose a new Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The method is designed as a generalization of the semi-Lagrangian (SL) DG method for linear advection problems proposed in [J. Sci. Comput. 73: 514-542, 2017], which is formulated based on an adjoint problem and tracing upstream cells by tracking characteristics curves highly accurately. In the SLDG method, depending on the velocity field, upstream cells could be of arbitrary shape. Thus, a more sophisticated approximation to sides of the upstream cells is required to get high order approximation. For example, quadra…
Continuum mechanics can be formulated in the Lagrangian frame (addressing motion of individual continuum particles) or in the Eulerian frame (addressing evolution of fields in an inertial frame). There is a canonical Hamiltonian structure in the Lagrangian frame. By transformation to the Eulerian frame we find the Poisson bracket for Eulerian continuum mechanics with deformation gradient (or the related distortion matrix). Both Lagrangian and Eulerian Hamiltonian structures are then discussed from the perspective of space-time variational formulation and by means of semidirect products and Lie…
An arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) finite element method for arbitrarily curved and deforming two-dimensional materials and interfaces is presented here. An ALE theory is developed by endowing the surface with a mesh whose in-plane velocity need not depend on the in-plane material velocity, and can be specified arbitrarily. A finite element implementation of the theory is formulated and applied to curved and deforming surfaces with in-plane incompressible flows. Numerical inf--sup instabilities associated with in-plane incompressibility are removed by locally projecting the surface tensio…
We present approaches for the study of fluid-structure interactions subject to thermal fluctuations. A mixed mechanical description is utilized combining Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frames. We establish general conditions for operators coupling these descriptions. Stochastic driving fields for the formalism are derived using principles from statistical mechanics. The stochastic differential equations of the formalism are found to exhibit significant stiffness in some physical regimes. To cope with this issue, we derive reduced stochastic differential equations for several physical regime…
