A quaternionic version of Quantum Mechanics is constructed using the Schwinger's formulation based on measurements and a Variational Principle. Commutation relations and evolution equations are provided, and the results are compared with other formulations.
Scattering discussion due to Double Dirac Equation in Quaternionic version of relativistic quantum mechanics has been studied in this paper in details. In such a quantum mechanics Dirac equation in presence vector and scalar potential has been considered. Then a Quaternionic double Dirac delta potential comes to our considered system which causes to scatter the particles. Scattering states of the particles have been derived as well as reflected and transmission coefficients are calculated.
In looking for quaternionic violations of quantum mechanics, we discuss the delay time for pure quaternionic potentials. The study shows in which energy region it is possible to amplify the difference between quaternionic and complex quantum mechanics.
A formulation of quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbb{H}$QM) is presented in terms of a real Hilbert space. Using a physically motivated scalar product, we prove the spectral theorem and obtain a novel quaternionic Fourier series. After a brief discussion on unitary operators in this formalism, we conclude that this quantum theory is indeed consistent, and can be a valuable tool in the search for new physics.
In this paper, we analyze, by using a matrix approach, the dynamics of a non-relativistic particle in presence of a quaternionic potential barrier. The matrix method used to solve the quaternionic Schrodinger equation allows to obtain a closed formula for the transmission coefficient. Up to now, in quaternionic quantum mechanics, almost every discussion on the dynamics of non-relativistic particle was motived by or evolved from numerical studies. A closed formula for the transmission coefficient stimulates an analysis of qualitative differences between complex and quaternionic quantum mechanic…
The spectral singularity have been extensively studied over the last one and half decade for different non-Hermitian potentials in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. The nature of spectral singularities have not been studied for the case of quaternionic potential. In the present work we perform an analytical study for the scattering from a quaternionic point interaction represented by delta function. New features of spectral singularities are observed which are different than the case of complex (non-quaternionic) point interaction. Most notable difference is the occurrence of spectral singulari…
Quaternionic quantum Hamiltonians describing nonrelativistic spin particles require the ambient physical space to have five dimensions. The quantum dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle system characterised by a generic such Hamiltonian is worked out in detail. It is shown that there exists, within the structure of quaternionic quantum mechanics, a canonical reduction to three spatial dimensions upon which standard quantum theory is retrieved. In this dimensional reduction, three of the five dynamical variables are shown to oscillate around a cylinder, thus behaving in a quasi one-dimensional manner…
Analysis of the logical foundations of quantum mechanics indicates the possibility of constructing a theory using quaternionic Hilbert spaces. Whether this mathematical structure reflects reality is a matter for experiment to decide. We review the only direct search for quaternionic quantum mechanics yet carried out and outline a recent proposal by the present authors to look for quaternionic effects in correlated multi-particle systems. We set out how such experiments might distinguish between the several quaternionic models proposed in the literature.
We characterize the quasianti-Hermitian quaternionic operators in QQM by means of their spectra; moreover, we state a necessary and sufficient condition for a set of quasianti-Hermitian quaternionic operators to be anti-Hermitian with respect to a uniquely defined positive scalar product in a infinite dimensional (right) quaternionic Hilbert space. According to such results we obtain two alternative descriptions of a quantum optical physical system, in the realm of quaternionic quantum mechanics, while no alternative can exist in complex quantum mechanics, and we discuss some differences betwe…
We present an axiomatic modification of quaternionic quantum mechanics with a possible-worlds semantics capable of predicting essential "nonquantum" features of an observable universe model - the dimensionality and topology of spacetime, the existence, the signature and a specific form of a metric on it, and certain naturally distinguished directions (vistas) in spacetime unrelated to its metric properties.
We consider non-local properties of quanternionic quantum mechanics, in which the complex numbers are replaced by the quaternions as the underlying algebra. Specifically, we show that it is possible to construct a non-local box. This allows one to rule out quaternionic quantum mechanics using assumptions about communication complexity or information causality.
This study examines Quaternion Dirac solutions for an infinite square well. The quaternion result does not recover the complex result within a particular limit. This raises the possibility that quaternionic quantum mechanics may not be understood as a correction to complex quantum mechanics, but it may also be a structure that can be used to study phenomena that cannot be described through the framework of complex quantum mechanics.
We present two novel solutions of real Hilbert state quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbb H$QM). Firstly, we observe that the angular momentum operator admits two different classes of physically non-equivalent free particles. As a second result, we study the Larmor precession to observe that it has a quaternionic solution where a novel phenomenological interpretation is possible, as well as a different of spin is possible, and these results may encourage experimental and theoretical investigations of the quaternionic theory.
The breakdown of Ehrenfest's theorem imposes serious limitations on quaternionic quantum mechanics (QQM). In order to determine the conditions in which the theorem is valid, we examined the conservation of the probability density, the expectation value and the classical limit for a non-anti-hermitian formulation of QQM. The results also indicated that the non-anti-hermitian quaternionic theory is related to non-hermitian quantum mechanics, and thus the physical problems described with both of the theories should be related.
We study the elastic scattering of quantum particles based on a real Hilbert space approach to quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbbm H$QM) and derive expression for the wave function, the phase shifts, as well as the optical theorem for the case of a hard sphere scattering potential. The strong agreement between these new quaternionic results and the corresponding results in complex quantum mechanics reinforce the validity of the $\mathbbm H$QM generalization of ordinary complex quantum mechanics ($\mathbbm C$QM).
Quantum mechanics with quaternionic mass is considered. The momentum eigen-value equation with quaternionic mass yields the Klein-Gordon equation with a mass consisting of longitudinal and traverse masses. The scalar field total mass is found to be a sum of these masses. This field appears to be connected with two subfields conserving linear momentum. It is found that a particle with real mass satisfies the quantum Telegraph equation, whereas that one with quaternionic mass satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation. A quantum force acting on the particle is found to be proportional to its velocity. …
Solutions of quaternionic quantum mechanics (QQM) are difficult to grasp, even in simple physical situations. In this article, we provide simple and understandable free particle quaternionic solutions, that can be easily compared to complex quantum mechanics (CQM). As an application, we study the scattering of quaternionic particles through a scalar step potential. We also provide a general solution method for the quaternionic Schrödinger equation, which can be applied to more sophisticated and physically interesting models.
The density operators obtained by taking partial traces do not represent proper mixtures of the subsystems of a compound physical system, but improper mixtures, since the coefficients in the convex sums expressing them never bear the ignorance interpretation. As a consequence, assigning states to these subsystems is problematical in standard quantum mechanics (subentity problem). Basing on the proposal provided in the SR interpretation of quantum mechanics, where improper mixtures are considered as true nonpure states conceptually distinct from proper mixtures, we show here that proper and imp…
In this article we obtained the harmonic oscillator solution for quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbbm{H}$QM) in the real Hilbert space, both in the analytic method and in the algebraic method. The quaternionic solutions have many additional possibilities if compared to complex quantum mechanics ($\mathbbm{C}$QM), and thus there are many possible applications to these results in future research.
The algebraic consistency of spin and isospin at the level of an unbroken SU(2) gauge theory suggests the existence of an additional angular momentum besides the spin and isospin and also produces a full quaternionic spinor operator. The latter corresponds to a vector boson in space-time, interpreted as a SU(2) gauge field. The existence of quaternionic spinor fields implies in a quaternionic Hilbert space and its necessary mathematical analysis. It is shown how to obtain a unique representation of a quaternion function by a convergent positive power series.
We solve Klein-Gordon equation (KGE) in the framework of the real Hilbert space approach to quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbbm H$QM). The presented solution is the simplest ever obtained for quaternionic quantum theories, and the closest to the complex solution. The scattering of a quaternionic charged scalar particle from an electric field is also obtained. A remarkable feature of quaternionic scalar particles is the existence of massive light cone particles.
It has been recently pointed out by Caves, Fuchs, and Rungta that real quantum mechanics (that is, quantum mechanics defined over real vector spaces provides an interesting foil theory whose study may shed some light on just which particular aspects of quantum entanglement are unique to standard quantum theory, and which ones are more generic over other physical theories endowed with this phenomenon. Following this work, we discuss some entanglement properties of two-rebits systems, making a comparison with the basic properties of two-qubits systems, i.e., the ones described by standard comple…
In his recent article [arXiv:1604.04950], Adler questions the usefulness of the bound found in our experimental search for genuine effects of hyper-complex quantum mechanics [arXiv:1602.01624]. Our experiment was performed using a black-box (instrumentalist) approach to generalized probabilistic theories; therefore, it does not assume a priori any particular underlying mechanism. From that point of view our experimental results do indeed place meaningful bounds on possible effects of "post-quantum theories", including quaternionic quantum mechanics. In his article, Adler compares our experimen…
By using the analogy between optics and quantum mechanics, we obtain the Snell law for the planar motion of quantum particles in the presence of quaternionic potentials.
We revisit the formulation of quantum mechanics over the quaternions and investigate the dynamical structure within this framework. Similar to standard complex quantum mechanics, time evolution is then mediated by a unitary operator which can be written as the exponential of the generator of time shifts. By imposing physical assumptions on the correspondence between the energy observable and the generator of time shifts, we prove that quaternionic quantum theory admits a time evolution only for systems with a quaternionic dimension of at most two. Applying the same strategy to standard complex…
While real Hamiltonian mechanics and Hermitian quantum mechanics can both be cast in the framework of complex canonical equations, their complex generalisations have hitherto been remained tangential. In this paper quaternionic and coquaternionic (split-signature analogue of quaternions) extensions of Hamiltonian mechanics are introduced, and are shown to offer a unifying framework for complexified classical and quantum mechanics. In particular, quantum theories characterised by complex Hamiltonians invariant under space-time reflection are shown to be equivalent to certain coquaternionic exte…
We consider possible non-signaling composites of probabilistic models based on euclidean Jordan algebras. Subject to some reasonable constraints, we show that no such composite exists having the exceptional Jordan algebra as a direct summand. We then construct several dagger compact categories of such Jordan-algebraic models. One of these neatly unifies real, complex and quaternionic mixed-state quantum mechanics, with the exception of the quaternionic "bit". Another is similar, except in that (i) it excludes the quaternionic bit, and (ii) the composite of two complex quantum systems comes wit…
The patterns of fringes produced by an interferometer have long been important testbeds for our best contemporary theories of physics. Historically, interference has been used to contrast quantum mechanics to classical physics, but recently experiments have been performed that test quantum theory against even more exotic alternatives. A physically motivated family of theories are those where the state space of a two-level system is given by a sphere of arbitrary dimension. This includes classical bits, and real, complex and quaternionic quantum theory. In this paper, we consider relativity of …
In classical case there is simplest method of error correction with using three equal bits instead of one. In the paper is shown, how the scheme fails for quantum error correction with complex vector spaces of usual quantum mechanics, but works in real and quaternionic cases. It is discussed also, how to implement the three qubits scheme with using encoding of quaternionic qubit by Majorana spinor. Necessary concepts and formulae from area of quantum error corrections are closely introduced and proved.
Hartree--Fock theory in quantum mechanics is reviewed, from the proposal of the Hartree--Fock approximation right after quantum mechanics was formulated to its applications in modern physics. This includes the description of traditional Hartree--Fock theory in quantum chemistry, its generalizations of various kinds, and its importance for predicting the presence of symmetry breaking, or the absence thereof.
Frequency-Domain Analysis of Time-Dependent Multiomic Data in Progressive Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Proposed Quantum-Classical Hybrid Approach with Quaternionic Extensions
We introduce a model of computation based on quaternions, which is inspired on the quantum computing model. Pure states are vectors of a suitable linear space over the quaternions. Other aspects of the theory are the same as in quantum computing: superposition and linearity of the state space, unitarity of the transformations, and projective measurements. However, one notable exception is the fact that quaternionic circuits do not have a uniquely defined behaviour, unless a total ordering of evaluation of the gates is defined. Given such an ordering a unique unitary operator can be associated …
A variational calculation of the energy levels of a class of PT-invariant quantum mechanical models described by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H= p^2 - (ix)^N with N positive and x complex is presented. Excellent agreement is obtained for the ground state and low lying excited state energy levels and wave functions. We use an energy functional with a three parameter class of PT-symmetric trial wave functions in obtaining our results.
A system with anholonomic constraints where the trajectories of physical degrees of freedom are autoparallels on a manifold equipped with a general Cartan connection is discussed. A variational principle for the autoparallel trajectories is derived from the d'Alambert-Lagrange principle for anholonomic constrained systems. A geometrical (coordinate-independent) formulation of the variational principle is given. Its relation to Sedov's anholonomic variational principle for dissipative systems and to Poincaré's variational principle in anholonomic reference frames is established. A modification …
A theoretical scheme, based on a probabilistic generalization of the Hamilton's principle, is elaborated to obtain an unified description of more general dynamical behaviors determined both from a lagrangian function and by mechanisms not contemplated by this function. Within this scheme, quantum mechanics, classical field theory and a quantum theory for scalar fields are discussed. As a by-product of the probabilistic scheme for classical field theory, the equations of the De Donder-Weyl theory for multi-dimensional variational problems are recovered.
We introduce a class of non-local Lagrangians which allow for the variational derivation of non-local conser- vation laws in a self-consistent manner. The formalism developed here generalizes previous approaches, used in the context of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric quantum mechanics and optics in the paraxial approximation in a twofold way: firstly it is valid for a larger set of linear symmetry transforms and secondly it enables the derivation of additional non-local conservation laws for general higher dimensional wave mechanical systems.
This article develops a variational formulation for the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. The main results are obtained through an extension of the classical mechanics approach to a more general context, which in some sense, includes the quantum mechanics one. For the second part of the text, the definition of normal field and its relation with the wave function concept play a fundamental role in the main results establishment. Among the applications, we include a model with the presence of electromagnetic fields and also the modeling of a chemical reaction. Finally, in the last section, we …
This paper has a dual purpose. One aim is to study the evolution of coherent states in ordinary quantum mechanics. This is done by means of a Hamiltonian approach to the evolution of the parameters that define the state. The stability of the solutions is studied. The second aim is to apply these techniques to the study of the stability of minisuperspace solutions in field theory. For a $λφ^4$ theory we show, both by means of perturbation theory and rigorously by means of theorems of the K.A.M. type, that the homogeneous minisuperspace sector is indeed stable for positive values of the paramete…
We extend the ability of unitary quantum circuits by interfacing it with classical autoregressive neural networks. The combined model parametrizes a variational density matrix as a classical mixture of quantum pure states, where the autoregressive network generates bitstring samples as input states to the quantum circuit. We devise an efficient variational algorithm to jointly optimize the classical neural network and the quantum circuit for quantum statistical mechanics problems. One can obtain thermal observables such as the variational free energy, entropy, and specific heat. As a by produc…
Conventional quantum mechanics with a complex Hilbert space and the Born Rule is derived from five axioms describing properties of probability distributions for the outcome of measurements. Axioms I,II,III are common to quantum mechanics and hidden variable theories. Axiom IV recognizes a phenomenon, first noted by Turing and von Neumann, in which the increase in entropy resulting from a measurement is reduced by a suitable intermediate measurement. This is shown to be impossible for local hidden variable theories. Axiom IV, together with the first three, almost suffice to deduce the conventio…
A modified lagrangian with causal and retrocausal momenta was used to derive a first causal wave equation and a second retrocausal wave equation using the principle of least action. The retrocausal wave function obtained through this method was found to be equivalent to the complex conjugate of the causal wave function, thus leading to the conclusion that a retrocausal effect is already implicit in quantum mechanics through the means of complex conjugation of the wave function when computing the probability density for a particle. Lastly, the same variational principle was employed with a frac…
Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) of a classical mechanical force detection results from quantum back action impinged by the meter on a probe mechanical transducer perturbed by the force of interest. In this paper we introduce a technique of continuous \vy{broadband} back action avoiding measurements for the case of a resonant signal force acting on a linear mechanical oscillator supporting one of mirrors of an optical Michelson-Sagnac Interferometer (MSI). The interferometer with the movable mirror is an opto-mechanical transducer able to support polychromatic probe field. The method involves a di…
We propose two improvements to the well-known power series method for confined one-dimensional quantum-mechanical problems. They consist of the addition of a variational step were the energy plays the role of a variational parameter. We compare the rate of convergence of the three methods on an exactly-solvable model. We also outline possible generalizations of the approaches to more complex problems.
We revisit the problem of preparing a mechanical oscillator in the vicinity of its quantum-mechanical ground state by means of feedback cooling based on continuous optical detection of the oscillator position. In the parameter regime relevant to ground state cooling, the optical back-action and imprecision noise set the bottleneck of achievable cooling and must be carefully balanced. This can be achieved by adapting the phase of the local oscillator in the homodyne detection realizing a so-called variational measurement. The trade-off between accurate position measurement and minimal disturban…
A local and distributive algorithm is proposed to find an optimal trial wave-function minimizing the Hamiltonian expectation in a quantum system. To this end, the quantum state of the system is connected to the Gibbs state of a classical system with the set of couplings playing the role of variational parameters. The average energy is written within the replica-symmetric approximation and the optimal parameters are obtained by a heuristic message passing algorithm based on the Bethe approximation. The performance of this approximate algorithm depends on the structure and quality of the trial w…
Inspired by the recent work of Carleo and Troyer[1], we apply machine learning methods to quantum mechanics in this article. The radial basis function network in a discrete basis is used as the variational wavefunction for the ground state of a quantum system. Variational Monte Carlo(VMC) calculations are carried out for some simple Hamiltonians. The results are in good agreements with theoretical values. The smallest eigenvalue of a Hermitian matrix can also be acquired using VMC calculations. Our results demonstrate that machine learning techniques are capable of solving quantum mechanical p…
