We have derived the relationship between the radial proper distance, h, and the polar angle, phi, for a light ray that is emitted and travels in the neighborhood of the Earth's surface. General relativity predicts that, even locally, the equation which relates these two physical magnitudes differs from the one stated by the principle of equivalence. More precisely, we have proved that, in the weak field limit, the local physical trajectory, h=h(phi), is the one that would correspond to a massive Newtonian particle in a field two times greater. Therefore, and contrary to the generally accepted fact, the principle of equivalence gives only 1/2 part of the general relativity local deflection of light.
Deflection angle for a light ray travelling in the equatorial plane of a rotating Kerr mass has been already calculated by various investigators. Considering the light ray to be travelling only slightly above the equatorial plane, calculations have been made for such a ray for its deflection angle. In this paper, we calculate deflection angles for the light ray at various heights, which are small compared to the impact parameter and derive corresponding analytical expressions for deflection angle.
We investigate the deflection angle in a strong deflection limit for a marginally unstable photon sphere in a general asymptotically flat, static and spherically symmetric spacetime under some assumptions to calculate observables. The deflection angle of a light ray reflected by the marginally unstable photon sphere diverges nonlogarithmically while the one reflected by a photon sphere diverges logarithmically. We apply our formula to a Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime and Hayward spacetime.
The physical deflection angle of a light ray propagating in a space-time supplied with an asymptotically flat metric has to be expressed in terms of the impact parameter.
We derive the light deflection caused by the screw dislocation in space-time. The derivation is based on the idea that space-time is a medium which can be deformed by gravity and that the deformation of space-time is equivalent to the existence of gravity.
We investigate the deflection of light by a rotating global monopole spacetime and a rotating Letelier spacetime in the weak deflection approximation. To this end, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the corresponding osculating optical geometries and show that the deflection of light increases due to the presence of the global monopole parameter and the string cloud parameter, respectively. The results obtained for the deflection angle in the equatorial plane generalize known results for the corresponding non-rotating global monopole and Letelier spacetimes as well as the Kerr solution.
Using the geodesic method and the perturbative approach, we study the deflection of light by time-periodic spherically symmetric gravitational fields. Assuming the weakness of the gravitational field, we derive general formulas that determine the deflection angle in the leading order approximation. The formulas are valid for both time-periodic and static metrics. Using these results, we calculate the deflection angle of a light ray passing through a spherically symmetric oscillating distribution of a self-gravitating scalar field with a logarithmic potential. It turned out that in this case th…
The new method of invariant definition of the measurable angle of light deflection in the static central symmetric gravitational field is suggested. The predicted pure gravitational contribution to the deflection angle slightly differs from its classical estimate and one may hope that this discrepancy could be experimentally detected in the near future. In order to clarify effects of the finite distance from a lens object to a light source and a receiver, the gravitational deflection of light has been recently reexamined by using the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theorem in differential geometry [Ishihara et al. 2016]. The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of a series of works initiated by the above paper. First, we provide the definition of the gravitational deflection angle of light for the finite-distance source and receiver in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. We discuss the geometrical invariance…
The helicity modification of light polarization which is induced by the gravitational deflection from a classical heavy rotating body, like a star or a planet, is considered. The expression of the helicity asymmetry is derived; this asymmetry signals the gravitationally induced spin transfer from the rotating body to the scattered photons.
Deflection of light due to massive objects was predicted by Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity. This deflection of light has been calculated by many researchers in past, for spherically symmetric objects. But, in reality, most of these gravitating objects are not spherical instead they are ellipsoidal ( oblate) in shape. The objective of the present work is to study theoretically the effect of this ellipticity on the trajectory of a light ray. Here, we obtain a converging series expression for the deflection of a light ray due to an ellipsoidal gravitating object, characterised by an…
The purpose of this Comment is to point out that there are conceptual and mathematical flaws in the analysis in "Light deflection by Damour-Solodukhin wormholes and Gauss-Bonnet theorem, Phys. Rev. D 98, 044033 (2018) by Ali Övgün".
Using a new geometrical method introduced by Werner, we find the deflection angle in the weak limit approximation by a spinning cosmic string in the context of the Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory of gravity. We begin by adopting the String-Randers optical metric, then we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry and derive the leading terms of the deflection angle in the equatorial plane. Calculations shows that light deflection is affected by the intrinsic spin of the cosmic string and torsion.
In this work, we calculate the quantum correction effects on the deflection of light in the spacetime geometry of a quantum improved Kerr black hole pierced by an infinitely long cosmic string. More precisely, we calculate the deflection angle by applying the Gauss--Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the osculating optical geometries related to the quantum improved rotating black hole in the weak limit approximation. We find that the deflection angle of light is affected by the quantum effects as well as the global topology due to the presence of the cosmic string. Besides, we have managed to find the sa…
In this letter, we have investigated the deflection angle of light by wormholes using a new geometrical method known as Gibbons-Werner method (GW). In particular we have calculated the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation in two wormhole spacetime geometries: Ellis wormhole and Janis-Newman-Winnicour (JNW) wormhole. We have employed the famous Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the Ellis wormhole optical geometry and JNW wormhole optical geometry, respectively. By using GBT, we computed the deflection angles in leading orders by these wormholes and our results were compared wit…
The deflection of a ray of light passing close to a gravitational mass, is generally calculated from the null geodesic which the light ray (photon) follows. However, there is an alternate approach, where the effect of gravitation on the ray of light is estimated by considering the ray to be passing through a material medium. Calculations have been done in this paper, following the later approach, to estimate the amount of deflection due to a static non-rotating mass. The refractive index of such a material medium has been calculated in a more rigorous manner in the present work and the final v…
Explicit expressions for the bending angle of light deflection arising from phenomenologically deformed black-hole metrics, subject to possible weak and strong quantum gravity effects, respectively, are obtained, by a highly effective method. The accuracy and effectiveness of these expressions are then illustrated by numerically solving the differential equation governing the deflection angle directly in the weak quantum effect situation.
The gravitational deflection of light ray is an important prediction of General Theory of Relativity. In this paper we develop analytical expression of the deflection of light ray without any weak field approximation due to a charged gravitational body represented by Reissner_Nordström (RN) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) space time geometry, using material medium approach. It is concluded that although both the geometries represent the charged, non-rotating, spherically symmetric gravitating body, but the effect of charge on the gravitational deflection is just opposite to each other. The gra…
We reply to the Comment of Bhattacharya and Karimov on our paper Light deflection by Damour-Solodukhin wormholes and Gauss-Bonnet theorem [arXiv:1811.00768 [gr-qc]]. We address a number of incorrect claims made about our calculations and methodology. We show below that the claims of BK are incorrect, and that there are no problems with the results of Övgün's paper or its implications.
In this letter we apply the Gauss--Bonnet theorem (GB) to calculate the deflection angle by a quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole in the weak limit approximation. In particular we calculate the light deflection by two types of quantum corrected black holes: the renormalization group improved Schwarzschild solution and the quantum corrected Schwarzschild solution in Bohmian quantum mechanics. We start from the corresponding optical metrics to use then the GB theorem and calculate the Gaussian curvature in both cases. We calculate the leading terms of the deflection angle and show that qu…
We investigate possible quantum gravity (QG) effects on the gravitational deflection of light. Two forms of deformation of the Schwarzschild spacetime are proposed. The first ansatz is a given Finslerian line element, it could be regarded as a weak QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Starting from this ansatz, we deduce the deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source. The second ansatz could be regarded as a strong QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source is deduced in this Riem…
From the Schwarzschild metric we obtain the higher-order terms (up to 20-th order) for the deflection of light around a massive object using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to solve the equation of motion of a photon around the stellar object. Additionally, we obtain diagonal Padé approximants from the perturbation expansion, and we show how these are a better fit for the numerical data. Furthermore, we use these approximants in ray-tracing algorithms to model the bending of light around the massive object.
We investigate the Lorentz symmetry breaking effects (LSBE) on the deflection of light by a rotating cosmic string spacetime in the weak limit approximation. We first calculate the deflection angle by a static cosmic string for a fixed spacelike 4-vector case (FSL) with the corresponding effective-string optical metric using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT). Then, we focus on a more general scenario, namely we calculate the deflection angle by a rotating cosmic string applying the GBT to Randers effective-string metric. We obtain a significant modification in the deflection angle because of the …

Comment on "Regular magnetically charged black holes from nonlinear electrodynamics: Thermodynamics, light deflection, and orbital dynamics" by Aydiner, Sucu and Sakalli
Taking up a method devised by Taylor and Wheeler and collecting pieces of their work we offer a self-contained derivation of the formulae giving both the precession of the orbit of a planet around the Sun and the deflection angle of a light pulse passing near the Sun in the framework of General Relativity. The demonstration uses only elementary algebra without resorting to tensor formalism. No prior knowledge in relativity is needed to follow the presentation.
The conformal gravity fit to observed galactic rotation curves requires γ>0. On the other hand, conventional method for light deflection by galaxies gives a negative contribution to Schwarzschild value for γ>0, which is contrary to observation. Thus, it is very important that the contribution to bending should in principle be positive, no matter how small its magnitude is. Here we show that the Rindler-Ishak method gives a positive contribution to Schwarzschild deflection for γ>0, as desired. We also obtain the exact local coupling term derived earlier by Sereno. These results indicate that co…
Gravitational lensing and black hole shadows are one of the strongest observational evidences to prove the existence of black holes in the universe. The gravitational lensing arises due to the deflection of light by the gravitational field of a gravitating body such as a black hole. Investigation of the shadow cast by a compact object as well as deflection of light around it may provide the useful information about physical nature of the particular compact object and other related aspects. In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a dual charged stringy black hole spacetime derived in…
The deflection angle of a light ray can be arbitrarily large near a light sphere. The time-symmetrical shape of light curves of a pair of light rays reflected by a light sphere of a lens object does not depend on the details of the lens object. We consider retrolensing light curves of sunlight with deflection angles $π$ and $3π$ by an Ellis wormhole, which is the simplest Morris-Thorne wormhole. If an Ellis wormhole with a throat parameter $a=10^{11}$ km is $100$ pc away from an observer and if the Ellis wormhole, the observer, and the sun are aligned perfectly in this order, the apparent magn…
Light deflection in the post-linear gravitational field of two bounded point-like masses is treated. Both the light source and the observer are assumed to be located at infinity in an asymptotically flat space. The equations of light propagation are explicitly integrated to the second order in $G/c^2$. Some of the integrals are evaluated by making use of an expansion in powers of the ratio of the relative separation distance to the impact parameter $(r_{12}/ξ)$. A discussion of which orders must be retained to be consistent with the expansion in terms of $G/c^2$ is given. It is shown that the …
In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of charged wormholes within the context of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. The primordial wormholes are predicted to exist in the early universe, where inflation driven by the dilaton field. We perform our analysis through optical geometry using the Gibbons-Werner method (GW), by adopting the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the standard geodesics approach. We report an interesting result for the deflection angle in leading-order terms--namely, the deflection angle increases due to the electric charge $Q$ and the magnetic charge $P$, wher…
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we extend the results presented in [Gabriel Crisnejo and Emanuel Gallo, Phys.Rev.D 97, 124016 (2018)] to stationary spacetimes. Specifically, we show that the Gauss-Bonnet theorem can be applied to describe the deflection angle of light rays in plasma media in stationary spacetimes. Second, by using a correspondence between the motion of light rays in a cold non magnetized plasma and relativistic test massive particles we show that this technique is not only powerful to obtain the leading order behavior of the deflection angle of massive/massless …
The transformation n to k in post-post-Newtonian order is simplified. All post-post-Newtonian terms of the order m^2/d^2 are neglected and we show that the total sum of these terms is smaller than 15/4 pi m^2/d^2. This simpler transformation will improve the efficiency of Gaia data reduction.
We study the impact of relativistic gravitational deflection of light on the accuracy of future Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). We estimate the deflection angles caused by the monopole, quadrupole and octupole components of gravitational fields for a number of celestial bodies in the solar system. We observe that, in many cases, the magnitude of the corresponding effects is significantly larger than the 1 uas accuracy expected from SIM. This fact argues for the development of a relativistic observational model for the mission that would account for the influence of both static and time-var…
In this paper, we argue that one can calculate the weak deflection angle of light in the background of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black hole using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. To support this, the optical geometry of the black hole with the Gibbons-Werner method are used to obtain the deflection angle of light in the weak field limits. Moreover, we investigate the effect of a plasma medium on deflection of light for a given black hole. Because of dilaton and axion are one of the candidate of the dark matter, it can give us a hint on observation of dark matter which is supported by the black h…
From the Reissner-Nordstrom metric we obtain the higher-order terms for the deflection of light around a massive-charged black hole using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to solve the equation of motion of a photon around the compact object. The corrections are performed developing the expansion in terms of $ε=\frac{r_{c}}{b}$ and $\fracδ{b}= \frac{Q^{2}}{6 πε_{0}Mc^{2} b}$. Additionally, from the perturbation expansion, we obtain multivariate Padé approximants. We also show how these are a better fit for the numerical data than the original formal Taylor series.
The influence of the medium on the gravitational deflection of light rays is widely discussed in literature for the simplest non-trivial case: cold non-magnetized plasma. In this article, we generalize these studies to the case of an arbitrary transparent dispersive medium with a given refractive index. We calculate the deflection angle of light ray moving in a general spherically symmetric metric in the presence of medium with the spherically symmetric refractive index. The equation for the radius of circular light orbits is also derived. We discuss in detail the properties of these results a…
The surface density $Σ$-map and the convergence $κ$-map of Bullet Cluster 1E0657-558 show that the center of baryonic matters separates from the center of gravitational force, and the distribution of gravitational force do not possess spherical symmetry. This hints that a modified gravity with difference to Newtonian inverse-square law at large scale, and less symmetry is worth investigating. In this paper, we study the dynamics in Randers-Finsler spacetime. The Newtonian limit and gravitational deflection of light in a Rindler-type potential is focused in particular. It is shown that the conv…
The fact that the gravitation could deflect the light trajectory has been confirmed by a large number of observation data, that is consistent with the result calculated by Einstein's gravity. F(R)-gravity is the modification of Einstein's gravity. According to the field equations obtained by the action of the f(R) form, we get a similar Schwarzschild metric. According to the condition that four-dimension momenta of the photon return to zero and that of conservation of covariant momenta, we obtain the equation of motion of the photon in a specific form of f (R)-gravity. We solve the equation to…
In this paper, the homotopy-perturbation method (HPM) is applied to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the gravitational deflection of light in General Relativity near Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence (Kiselev black hole). In order to demonstrate that HPM is able to yield acceptable solutions for the null-geodesics with easily computable terms, the HPM is tested for the simple examples of spherically symmetric spacetimes such as Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. After that, the null-geodesics of light passing the vicinity of Kiselev black hole are st…
We study the deflection of light by a magnetic dipole field in the generalized Born-Infeld electrodynamics. Using the effective index of refraction and the trajectory equation based on geometric optics, we compute the weak bending angle of light passing on the equator of the magnetic dipole. In the limit where the classical Born-Infeld parameter is infinite, the bending angle agree with the one computed from the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian. We also compute the bending angle using the geodesic equation of the effective metric induced by a massive object with magnetic dipole. In the massless lim…
Analytical series expansions for the bending of light in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole are presented in both the strong and weak deflection regimes. It is critical that these are known in analytical form so further analysis can be done for predicting different properties of images formed in gravitational lensing. Starting with the exact bending angle in terms of the spin parameter, we apply a perturbative scheme for rewriting the bending angle as series expansions in terms of the impact parameter of the incident light ray. The asymmetry introduced by the black hole spin results in …
Based on the 4D momentum, the influence of quintessence on the gravitational frequency shift and the deflection of light are examined in modified Schwarzschild space. We find that the frequency of photon depends on the state parameter of quintessence $w_q$: the frequency increases for $-1<w_q<-1/3$ and decreases for $-1/3<w_q<0$. Meanwhile, we adopt an integral power number $a$ ($a = 3ω_q + 2$) to solve the orbital equation of photon. The photon's potentials become higher with the decrease of $ω_q$. The behavior of bending light depends on the state parameter $ω_q$ sensitively. In particular, …
In this paper, using the recent method proposed by Ono, Ishihara and Asada (OIA) who extend the idea of Gibbons and Werner to the stationary and axisymmetric case, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of the non-rotating and rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes spacetimes to study the weak gravitational lensing by these objects. Furthermore, we study the strong gravitational lensing by the non-rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes using the Bozza's method to see the differences between the weak lensing and the strong lensing. We demonstrate the relation between the strong def…
Recent studies suggest that the cosmological constant affects the gravitational bending of photons although the orbital equation for light in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time is free from cosmological constant. Here we argued that the very notion of cosmological constant independency of photon orbit in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time is not proper. Consequently the cosmological constant has some clear contribution to the deflection angle of light rays. We stressed the importance of the study of photon trajectories from the reference objects in bending calculation, particularly for asy…
We investigate strong lensing by a spherically symmetric mass distribution in the framework of the Einstein-Straus solution with positive cosmological constant and concentrate on the case of a spatially closed Universe ($k=+1$). We develop a method based on integration of differential equations in order to make possible the computation of light deflection and time delay. By applying our results to the lensed quasar SDSS J1004+4112, we find that the bending of light and time delay depend on wether the present value of the scale factor $a_0$ is or is not much smaller than a value close to $9.1 \…
The present paper is an extension of a recent work (Bhattacharya et al. 2010) to the Einstein-Strauss vacuole model with a cosmological constant, where we work out the light deflection by considering perturbations up to order M^3 and confirm the light bending obtained previously in their vacuole model by Ishak et al. (2008). We also obtain another local coupling term -((5πM^2Λ)/8) related to Λ, in addition to the one obtained by Sereno (2008, 2009). We argue that the vacuole method for light deflection is exclusively suited to cases where the cosmological constant Λ disappears from the path eq…
