We find a parametric solution of an arbitrary symmetric homogeneous diophantine equation of 5th degree in 6 variables using two primitive solutions. We then generalize this approach to symmetric forms of any odd degree by proving the following results.
(1) Every symmetric form of odd degree $n\ge 5$ in $6 \cdot 2^{n-5}$ variables has a rational parametric solution depending on $2n-8$ parameters. (2) Let $F(x_1, ..., x_N)$ be a symmetric form of odd degree $n\ge 5$ in $N=6 \cdot 2^{n-4}$ variables, and let $q$ be any rational number. Then the equation $F(x_i)=q$ has a rational parametric solution depending on $2n-6$ parameters.
The latter result can be viewed as a solution of a problem of Waring type for this class of forms.
We shall show that, for any given primes $\ell\geq 17$ and $p, q\equiv 1\pmod{\ell}$, the diophantine equation $(x^\ell-1)/(x-1)=p^m q$ has at most four positive integral solutions $(x, m)$ and give its application to odd perfect number problem.
Author developed a method in the paper, which, unlike the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood (CM), allows you to perform a lower estimate for the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. It was found the lower estimate of the number of natural solutions to various types of homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equations with integer coefficients diagonal form with any number of variables using this method. Author obtained upper bound of the number of the natural solutions (using CM) of one type of homogeneous Diophantine equation for val…
In recent years, the ergodic theory of group actions on homogeneous spaces has played a significant role in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation. We survey some recent developments with special emphasis on Diophantine properties of affine subspaces and their submanifolds.
Recent years have seen very important developments at the interface of Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics. In the first part of the paper we give a brief exposition of a dictionary developed by Dani and Kleinbock-Margulis which relates Diophantine properties of vectors to distribution of orbits of flows on the space of unimodular lattices. In the second part of the paper we briefly describe an extension of this dictionary recently developed by the authors, which establishes an analogous dynamical correspondence for general lattice orbits on homogeneous spaces. We concentrate sp…
The main goal of this work is to establish quantitative nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces of products of real and $p$-adic Lie groups. These results have applications both to ergodic theory and to Diophantine approximation. Namely, earlier results of Dani (finiteness of locally finite ergodic unipotent-invariant measures on real homogeneous spaces) and Kleinbock-Margulis (strong extremality of nondegenerate submanifolds of $\Bbb R^n$) are generalized to the $S$-arithmetic setting.
In Diophantine approximation, inhomogeneous problems are linked with homogeneous ones by means of the so-called Transference Theorems. We revisit this classical topic by introducing new exponents of Diophantine approximation. We prove that the exponent of approximation to a generic point in R^n by a system of n linear forms is equal to the inverse of the uniform homogeneous exponent associated to the system of dual forms.
The present paper is concerned with equidistribution results for certain flows on homogeneous spaces and related questions in Diophantine approximation. Firstly, we answer in the affirmative, a question raised by Kleinbock, Shi and Weiss regarding equidistribution of orbits of arbitrary lattices under diagonal flows and with respect to unbounded functions. We then consider the problem of Diophantine approximation with respect to rationals in a fixed number field. We prove a number field analogue of a famous result of W. M.Schmidt which counts the number of approximates to Diophantine inequalit…
Let $f$ be a homogeneous polynomial with rational coefficients in $d$ variables. We prove several results concerning uniform simultaneous approximation to points on the graph of $f$, as well as on the hypersurface $\{f(x_1,\dots,x_d) = 1\}$. The results are first stated for the case $f(x_1,\dots,x_d) = x_1^2+\dots+x_d^2,$ which is of particular interest.
We present a new approach to metric Diophantine approximation on manifolds based on the correspondence between approximation properties of numbers and orbit properties of certain flows on homogeneous spaces. This approach yields a new proof of a conjecture of Mahler, originally settled by V. Sprindzhuk in 1964. We also prove several related hypotheses of A. Baker and V. Sprindzhuk formulated in 1970s. The core of the proof is a theorem which generalizes and sharpens earlier results on non-divergence of unipotent flows on the space of lattices.
We show the insolvability of the Diophantine equation $ax^d-y^2-z^2+xyz-b=0$ in $\mathbb{Z}$ for fixed $a$ and $b$ such that $a\equiv 1 \pmod {12}$ and $b=2^da-3$, where $d$ is an odd integer and is a multiple of $3$. Further, we investigate the more general family with $b=2^da-3^r$, where $r$ is a positive odd integer. As a consequence, we found an infinite family of hyperelliptic curves with trivial torsion over $\mathbb{Q}$. We conclude by providing some numerical evidence corroborating the main results.
The goal of this paper is to develop a coherent theory for inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on curves in $R^n$ akin to the well established homogeneous theory. More specifically, the measure theoretic results obtained generalize the fundamental homogeneous theorems of R.C. Baker (1978), Dodson, Dickinson (2000) and Beresnevich, Bernik, Kleinbock, Margulis (2002). In the case of planar curves, the complete Hausdorff dimension theory is developed
We prove over fields of power series the analogues of several Diophantine approximation results obtained over the field of real numbers. In particular we establish the power series analogue of Kronecker's theorem for matrices, together with a quantitative form of it, which can also be seen as a transference inequality between uniform approximation and inhomogeneous approximation. Special attention is devoted to the one dimensional case. Namely, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on an irrational power series $α$ which ensures that, for some positive $\eps$, the set $$ \liminf_{Q \in …
We apply nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces to compute Diophantine exponents of affine subspaces of $\R^n$ and their nondegenerate submanifolds.
Let $Y_0$ be a not very well approximable $m\times n$ matrix, and let $M$ be a connected analytic submanifold in the space of $m\times n$ matrices containing $Y_0$. Then almost all $Y\in M$ are not very well approximable. This and other similar statements are cast in terms of properties of certain orbits on homogeneous spaces and deduced from quantitative nondivergence estimates for `quasi-polynomial' flows on on the space of lattices.
Let p, c be distinct odd primes, and l \ge 2 an integer. We find sufficient conditions for the Diophantine equation cy^l=(x^p-1)/(x-1) not to have integer solutions
In a landmark paper, D.Y. Kleinbock and G.A. Margulis established the fundamental Baker-Sprindzuk conjecture on homogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds. Subsequently, there has been dramatic progress in this area of research. However, the techniques developed to date do not seem to be applicable to inhomogeneous approximation. Consequently, the theory of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds remains essentially non-existent. In this paper we develop an approach that enables us to transfer homogeneous statements to inhomogeneous ones. This is rather surprising as the i…
The object of this paper is to give a new proof of all the solutions of the Diophantine equation x^2+11^m=y^n; in positive integers x, y with odd m>1 and n>=3.
Let $n$ be a positive integer. We discuss pairs of distinct odd primes $p$ and $q$ not dividing $n$ for which the Diophantine equations $pq=x^2+ny^2$ have integer solutions in $x$ and $y$. As its examples we classify all such pairs of $p$ and $q$ when $n=5$ and $14$.
We show how to determine the $k$-th bit of Chaitin's algorithmically random real number $Ω$ by solving $k$ instances of the halting problem. From this we then reduce the problem of determining the $k$-th bit of $Ω$ to determining whether a certain Diophantine equation with two parameters, $k$ and $N$, has solutions for an odd or an even number of values of $N$. We also demonstrate two further examples of $Ω$ in number theory: an exponential Diophantine equation with a parameter $k$ which has an odd number of solutions iff the $k$-th bit of $Ω$ is 1, and a polynomial of positive integer variabl…
In this article, we study an analytic curve $φ: I=[a,b]\rightarrow \mathrm{M}(n\times n, \mathbb{R})$ in the space of $n$ by $n$ real matrices, and show that if $φ$ satisfies certain geometric conditions, then for almost every point on the curve, the Diophantine approximation given by Dirichlet's Theorem is not improvable. To do this, we embed the curve into some homogeneous space $G/Γ$, and prove that under the action of some expanding diagonal flow $A= \{a(t): t \in \mathbb{R}\}$, the expanding curves tend to be equidistributed in $G/Γ$, as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. This solves a special case…
We prove that for each odd prime p, positive integer alpha, and non-negative integers beta and gamma, the Diophantine equation X^{2N} + 2^{2 alpha} 5^{2 beta} p^{2 gamma} = Z^5 has no solution with X, Z, N in Z^+, N > 1, and gcd(X,Z) = 1.
In 2012, T. Miyazaki and A. Togbé gave all of the solutions of the Diophantine equations $(2am-1)^x+(2m)^y=(2am+1)^z$ and $b^x+2^y=(b+2)^z$ in positive integers $x,y,z,$ $a>1$ and $b\ge 5$ odd. In this paper, we propose a similar problem (which we call the shuffle variant of a Diophantine equation of Miyazaki and Togbé). Here we first prove that the Diophantine equation $(2am+1)^x+(2m)^y=(2am-1)^z$ has only the solutions $(a, m, x, y, z)=(2, 1, 2, 1, 3)$ and $(2,1,1,2,2)$ in positive integers $a>1,m,x,y,z$. Then using this result, we show that the Diophantine equation $b^x+2^y=(b-2)^z$ has onl…
Suppose that $x$ is odd, $n\geq7$ and $p\notin\{2,5\}$ are primes. In this paper, we prove that the Diophantine equations $x^{2}\pm5^αp^{n}=y^{n}$ have no solutions in positive integers $α,x,y$ with $gcd(x,y)=1$.
In this paper, we give all the solutions of the Diophantine equation x^2+7^{alpha}.11^{beta}=y^n, in nonnegative integers x, y, n>=3 with x and y coprime, except for the case when alpha.x is odd and beta is even.
In this paper we present a new method of solving certain quartic and higher degree homogeneous polynomial diophantine equations in four variables. The method can also be extended to solve simultaneous homogeneous polynomial diophantine equations, in five or more variables, with one of the equations being of degree $\geq 4$. We show that, under certain conditions, the method yields an arbitrarily large number of integer solutions of such diophantine equations and diophantine systems, some examples being a sextic equation in four variables, a tenth degree equation in six variables, and two simul…
The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.
Given odd, coprime integers $a$, $b$ ($a>0$), we consider the Diophantine equation $ax^2+b^{2l}=4y^n$, $x, y\in\Bbb Z$, $l \in \Bbb N$, $n$ odd prime, $\gcd(x,y)=1$. We completely solve the above Diophantine equation for $a\in\{7,11,19,43,67,163\}$, and $b$ a power of an odd prime, under the conditions $2^{n-1}b^l\not\equiv \pm 1(\mod a)$ and $\gcd(n,b)=1$. For other square-free integers $a>3$ and $b$ a power of an odd prime, we prove that the above Diophantine equation has no solutions for all integers $x$, $y$ with ($\gcd(x,y)=1$), $l\in\mathbb{N}$ and all odd primes $n>3$, satisfying $2^{n-…
In this paper we consider the Diophantine equation $x^2+q^{2m}=2y^p$ where $m,p,q,x,y$ are integer unknowns with $m>0,$ $p$ and $q$ are odd primes and $\gcd(x,y)=1.$ We prove that there are only finitely many solutions $(m,p,q,x,y)$ for which $y$ is not a sum of two consecutive squares. We also study the above equation with fixed $y$ and with fixed $q.$
For fixed integers $D \geq 0$ and $c \geq 3$, we demonstrate how to use $2$-adic valuation trees of sequences to analyze Diophantine equations of the form $x^2+D=2^cy$ and $x^3+D=2^cy$, for $y$ odd. Further, we show for what values $D \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, the numbers $x^3+D$ will generate infinite valuation trees, which lead to infinite solutions to the above Diophantine equations.
We prove $S$-arithmetic inhomogeneous Khintchine type theorems on analytic nondegenerate manifolds. The divergence case, which constitutes the main substance of this paper, is proved in the general context of Hausdorff measures using ubiquitous systems. For $S$ consisting of more than one prime, finite or infinite, the divergence results are new even in the homogeneous setting. We also prove the convergence case of the theorem, including in particular, the $S$-arithmetic inhomogeneous counterpart of the Baker-Sprindžuk conjectures using nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces i…
Let (a,b,c) be a primitive Pythagorean triple, i.e., a^{2}+b^{2}=c^{2} with gcd(a,b,c)=1, a even and b odd. Terai's conjecture says that the Diophantine equation x^{2}+b^{y}=c^{z} has only the positive integer solutions (x,y,z)=(a,2,2). In this study, we prove that Terai's conjecture is true when b is a product of two primes and c=5(mod8).
Using the circle method in combination with lattice point counting arguments, we show that for almost all homogeneous diophantine equations of additive type and degree $k$ in more than $4k$ variables, the Local-Global principle holds true. Moreover, our approach shows that almost all such equations having a non-trivial integer solution have a very small such solution, the bound being close to the best possible one.
A method is described to sum multi-dimensional arithmetic functions subject to hyperbolic summation conditions, provided that asymptotic formulae in rectangular boxes are available. In combination with the circle method, the new method is a versatile tool to count rational points on algebraic varieties defined by multi-homogeneous diagonal equations.
This work determine the entire family of positive integer solutions of the diophantine equation. The solution is described in terms of $\frac{(m-1)(m+n-2)}{2} $ or $\frac{(m-1)(m+n-1)}{2}$ positive parameters depending on $n$ even or odd. We find the solution of a diophantine system of equations by using the solution of the diophantine equation. We generalized all the results of the paper [5].
In this note we will analyze a diophantine equation raised by Michael Bennett in [1] that is pivotal in establishing that powers of five has few digits in its ternary expansion. We will show that the Diophantine equation $3^{a}+3^{b}+2=n^5$, where $(n,3)=1$ and $a>b>0$ is insoluble for pairs of positive integers $(a,b)$ where they are both even or one is even and the other is odd. In the case where both $(a,b)$ are odd, there is one known solution $2^5=3^3+3^1+2.$ We will show that there are no other solutions to the diophantine equation for $n^{5}<32\left(1+3(10^6)\right)^5$.
We extend the Khintchine transference inequalities, as well as a homogeneous-inhomogeneous transference inequality for lattices, due to Bugeaud and Laurent, to a weighted setting. We also provide applications to inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds and to weighted badly approximable vectors. Finally, we interpret and prove a conjecture of Beresnevich-Velani (2010) about inhomogeneous intermediate exponents.
The author showed that any homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order can be converted to a diagonal form using an integer non-orthogonal transformation maintaining asymptotic behavior of the number of its integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the transformation to the diagonal form of a wider class of algebraic second-order Diophantine equations, and also we consider the conditions for converting higher order algebraic Diophantine equations to this form. The author found an asymptotic estimate for the number of integer solutions of the diagonal Thue equation of odd…
The present paper is a sequel to [Monatsh.~Math.\ {\bf 194} (2021), 523--554] in which results of that paper are generalized so that they hold in the setting of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation. Given any integers $n \geq 2$ and $\ell \geq 1$, any ${\pmb ξ} = \left(ξ_1, \dots , ξ_\ell \right) \in \mathbb{R}^\ell$, and any homogeneous function \linebreak $f = \left(f_1, \dots , f_\ell \right): \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^\ell$ that satisfies a certain nonsingularity assumption, we obtain a biconditional criterion on the approximating function $ψ= \left(ψ_1, \dots , ψ_\ell \right): \mathb…
We investigate the solvability of the Diophantine equation in the title, where $d>1$ is a square-free integer, $p, q$ are distinct odd primes and $x,y,a,b$ are unknown positive integers with $\gcd(x,y)=1$. We describe all the integer solutions of this equation, and then use the main finding to deduce some results concerning the integers solutions of some of its variants. The methods adopted here are elementary in nature and are primarily based on the existence of the primitive divisors of certain Lehmer numbers.
We show that for any $ε<1$ and any $\mathcal{T}$ `drifting away from walls', Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$ for Lebesgue almost every system of linear forms $Y$ (see the paper for definitions). In the case $m = 1$ we also show that for a large class of measures $μ$ there is $ε_0>0$ such that for any drifting away from walls $\mathcal{T}$, any $ε<ε_0$, and for $μ$-almost every $Y$, Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$. These measures include natural measures on sufficiently regular smooth manifolds and fractals. Our results extend those …
We study the solutions of a Diophantine equation of the form $a^x+b^y=c^z$, where $a\equiv 2 \pmod 4$, $b\equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and $\gcd (a,b,c)=1$. The main result is that if there exists a solution $(x,y,z)=(2,2,r)$ with $r>1$ odd then this is the only solution in integers greater than 1, with the possible exception of finitely many values $(c,r)$. We also prove the uniqueness of such a solution if any of $a$, $b$, $c$ is a prime power. In a different vein, we obtain various inequalities that must be satisfied by the components of a putative second solution.
For a positive integer $t\geq 2$, let $b_{t}(n)$ denote the number of $t$-regular partitions of a nonnegative integer $n$. In a recent paper, Keith and Zanello investigated the parity of $b_{t}(n)$ when $t\leq 28$. They discovered new infinite families of Ramanujan type congruences modulo 2 for $b_{21}(n)$ involving every prime $p$ with $p\equiv 13, 17, 19, 23 \pmod{24}$. In this paper, we investigate the parity of $b_{21}(n)$ involving the primes $p$ with $p\equiv 1, 5, 7, 11 \pmod{24}$. We prove new infinite families of Ramanujan type congruences modulo 2 for $b_{21}(n)$ involving the odd pr…
Solutions of the quartic Fermat equation in ring class fields of odd conductor over quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$) are shown to be periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $T(z)$ defined on the punctured disk $0< |z|_2 \le \frac{1}{2}$ of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension $\textsf{K}_2$ of the $2$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_2$. All ring class fields of odd conductor over imaginary quadratic fields in which the prime $p=2$ splits are shown to be generated by complex periodic points of the algebraic function $T$, and conversely, all but two of …
S. Lang conjectured in 1974 that a hyperbolic algebraic variety defined over a number field has only finitely many rational points, and its analogue over function fields. We discuss the Nevanlinna-Cartan theory over function fields of arbitrary dimension and apply it for Diophantine property of hyperbolic projective hypersurfaces (homogeneous Diophantine equations) constructed by Masuda-Noguchi. We also deal with the finiteness property of $S$-units points of those Diophantine equations over number fields.
A Diophantine $m$-tuple with elements in the field $K$ is a set of $m$ non-zero (distinct) elements of $K$ with the property that the product of any two distinct elements is one less than a square in $K$. Let $X: (x^2-1)(y^2-1)(z^2-1)=k^2,$ be a threefold. Its $K$-rational points parametrize Diophantine triples over $K$ such that the product of the elements of the triple that corresponds to the point $(x,y,z,k)\in X(K)$ is equal to $k$. We denote by $\overline{X}$ the projective closure of $X$ and for a fixed $k$ by $X_k$ a variety defined by the same equation as $X$. We prove that the variety…
