We present observations of continuum (lambda = 0.7, 1.3, 3.6 and 18 cm) and OH maser (lambda = 18 cm) emission toward the young planetary nebula IRAS 17347-3139, which is one of the three planetary nebulae that are known to harbor water maser emission. From the continuum observations we show that the ionized shell of IRAS 17347-3139 consists of two main structures: one extended (size ~1". 5) with bipolar morphology along PA=-30 degrees, elongated in the same direction as the lobes observed in the near-infrared images, and a central compact structure (size ~0". 25) elongated in the direction perpendicular to the bipolar axis, coinciding with the equatorial dark lane observed in the near-infrared images. Our image at 1.3 cm suggests the presence of dense walls in the ionized bipolar lobes. We estimate for the central compact structure a value of the electron density at least ~5 times higher than in the lobes. A high resolution image of this structure at 0.7 cm shows two peaks separated by about 0". 13 (corresponding to 100-780 AU, using a distance range of 0.8-6 kpc). This emission is interpreted as originating in an ionized equatorial torus-like structure, from whose edges the water maser emission might be arising. We have detected weak OH 1612 MHz maser emission at VLSR ~ -70 km/s associated with IRAS 17347-3139. We derive a 3 sigma upper limit of < 35% for the percentage of circularly polarized emission. Within our primary beam, we detected additional OH 1612 MHz maser emission in the LSR velocity ranges -5 to -24 and -90 to -123 km/s, associated with the sources 2MASS J17380406-3138387 and OH 356.65-0.15, respectively.
A triple radio source recently detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array at 3.6 and 2 cm. Our observations confirm the interpretation that the central object is a thermal radio jet, while the two outer lobes are most probably heavily obscured HH objects. The thermal radio jet is resolved angularly for the first time and found to align closely with the outer lobes. The opening angle of the thermal jet is estimated to be $\sim 25^\circ$, confirming that collimated outflows…
We imaged the protostars of the nearby region NGC1333 IRAS 4 in the water maser line at 22.2 GHz by using the VLBA in phase referencing at milliarcsecond scale over four epochs spaced by one month to measure proper motions. We measure the absolute positions and proper motions of the H2O spots to investigate the kinematics of the region from where the jet is launched. Two protostars (A2 and B) have been detected in a highly variable H2O maser emission, with an active phase shorter than four weeks. A 70 AU chain of several maser spots, very well aligned, has been observed close to the B protosta…
We report a result of an interferometric observation toward an SiO maser source, IRAS 19312+1950, in the HCO+ J=1-0 line with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association (BIMA) Millimeter Array. In the spatially integrated spectrum of HCO+, two kinematic components were seen: a strong line with a narrow width (~2 km/s, narrow component), and a weak symmetric line with a broad width (~60 km/s, broad component). The line profile of HCO+ are reminiscent of that of CO. In the integrated intensity map, we found a pronounced bipolar shape consisting of lower-velocity parts of the broad component. The…
We present results of our search for collimated ionized winds in bipolar nebulae using the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our search is motivated by the discovery of an ionized jet in the bipolar nebula M 2-9 (Lim & Kwok 2003) that may be responsible for sculpting the nebula's mirror-symmetric structure. To determine if such jets are a common feature of bipolar nebulae, we searched for optically-thick radio cores - a characteristic signature of ionized jets - in 11 northern nebulae with the VLA at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and in 5 southern nebulae with the A…
We report on the detection of SiO and water masers toward a newly found bipolar nebula, IRAS 19312+1950. This object exhibits extreme red IRAS color log (F25/F12)=0.5 and log (F60/F25)=0.7 and a nebulosity having a size of about 30" extended to the South-West in the 2MASS near-infrared image. Toward this object, we have detected emission from the H2O 6(1,6)-5(2,3) transition, the SiO J=1-0, v=1 and 2, and J=2-1, v=1 transitions, and the SO 2(2)--1(1) and H13CN J=1-0 transitions. The thermal lines of SO and H13CN are shifted by about 12 km/s in radial velocity with respect to the maser lines, i…
High-resolution mid-infrared images have been obtained in N-band and Q-band for the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 16594-4656. A bright equatorial torus and a pair of bipolar lobes can clearly be seen in the infrared images. The torus appears thinner at the center than at the edges, suggesting that it is viewed nearly edge-on. The infrared lobes correspond to the brightest lobes of the reflection nebula seen in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical image, but with no sign of the point-symmetric structure seen in the visible image. The lobe structure shows a close correspondence with a molecula…
We have carried out a spatial-kinematical study of three proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 16594-4656, Hen 3-401, and Rob 22. High-resolution H2 images were obtained with NICMOS on the HST and high-resolution spectra were obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini-South. IRAS 16594-4656 shows a "peanut-shaped" bipolar structure with H2 emission from the walls and from two pairs of more distant, point-symmetric faint blobs. The velocity structure shows the polar axis to be in the plane of the sky, contrary to the impression given by the more complex visual image and the visibility of the cent…
We present new narrow-band near-infrared images together with K band spectra of highly collimated bipolar jets close to the IRAS 05487+0255 source. The jets are located at 50" West of the Herbig-Haro 110 outflow. The jets are not visible at optical wavelengths, and therefore, do not fall into the `standard' Herbig-Haro object classification scheme. Nevertheless, they belong to an ever growing group of molecular hydrogen jets associated with YSOs which are optically undetected. The jets are very well collimated, with a length-to-width ratio of 10-20. The spectra of the jet and counter-jet in th…
Two bipolar proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS16594-4656 and IRAS17150-3224, have been detected in various molecular lines, namely CO, ^{13}CO, HCN and CN, and remain undetected in several other species. CO(J=2-1) and CO(J=3-2) line profiles are compared to new spectra of similar PPN candidates, previously undetected in CO(J=2-1): CPD-53^{o}5736, IRAS17106-3046, IRAS17245-3951 and IRAS17441-2411. CO(J=2-1) maps of IRAS16594-4656 and IRAS17150-3224 show that both PPNe have little separation between blue, centre and red-shifted emission, and also that the CO(J=2-1) emission is of a similar size to th…
This work presents three dimensional, magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the formation and early evolution of a subgroup of planetary nebulae that exhibit a variety of point-symmetric structures. For bipolar nebulae, the formation of point-symmetric nebular shapes along the inner borders of their opposing lobes and/or collimated outflows or jets internal or external to their cavities, is reproduced by considering a steady misalignment of the magnetic collimation axis with respect to the symmetry axis of the bipolar wind outflow, defined perpendicular to the equatorial density enhancement. E…
We present high angular resolution observations, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the NRAO, of the high-velocity water masers toward the "water-fountain" pre-planetary nebula, IRAS 16342-3814. The detailed structure of the water masers appears to be that of bow shocks on either side of a highly collimated jet. The proper motions of the water masers are approximately equal to the radial velocities; the three-dimensional velocities are approximately +/-180 km/s, which leads to a very short dynamical time-scale of ~100 years. Although we do not find direct evidence for precession of t…
We report the results of mapping observations of the bipolar nebula with SiO maser emission, IRAS 19312+1950, in the CO (J=1-0 and J=2-1), 13CO (J=1-0 and J=2-1), C18O (J=1-0), CS (J=2-1), SO (J_K=3_2-2_1) and HCO+ (J=3-2) lines with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association array. Evolutional status of this source has been evoking a controversy since its discovery, though SiO maser sources are usually identified as late-type stars with active mass loss. In line profiles, two kinematical components are found as reported in previous single-dish observations: a broad pedestal component and a na…
The bipolar nebula, IRAS 19312+1950, is a unique SiO maser source exhibiting both properties as young and evolved objects. To clarify the nature of this object, we made molecular line observations with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. We detected emission from O-bearing (HCO^+, SiO, SO, and SO_2), C- and N-bearing molecules (CN, CS, HCN, HNC, NH_3, N_2H^+, HC_3N, H_2CS, and CH_3OH), and their isotopic species (C^17O, ^13C^18O, and C^34S). Line profiles consist of a weak broad (Dv 30 km/s) and/or a strong narrow (DV< 5 km/s) components, depending on molecular species. Strong time variations o…
IRAS 16547-4247 is the most luminous (6.2 x 10^4 Lsun) embedded young stellar object known to harbor a thermal radio jet. We report the discovery using VLT-ISAAC of a chain of H_2 2.12 um emission knots that trace a collimated flow extending over 1.5 pc. The alignment of the H_2 flow and the central location of the radio jet implies that these phenomena are intimately linked. We have also detected using TIMMI2 an isolated, unresolved 12 um infrared source towards the radio jet . Our findings affirm that IRAS 16547-4247 is excited by a single O-type star that is driving a collimated jet. We arg…
The triple radio source detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has previously been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3.6-cm wavelength. In this paper, we present new 3.6 cm observations taken 2.68 years after the first epoch that allow a search for variability and proper motions, as well as the detection of additional faint sources in the region. We do not detect proper motions along the axis of the outflow in the outer lobes of this source at a 4-$σ$ upper limit of $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This suggest…
IRAS 19312+1950 is an SiO maser source that exhibits a prominent bipolar nebulosity. Mapping observations of this object were made in the CO J=1--0, 13CO J=1--0, C18O J=1--0, CS J=2--1, and HCN J=1--0 lines and in the 150 GHz continuum band. Near-infrared imaging observations were also made in the J, H, and K-bands. The line profiles of the 12CO and HCN spectra consist of a weak broad component with a line width of about 50 km/s and a strong narrow component of the width of about 3 km/s. The profiles of the 13CO, C18O, and CS lines have only the narrow component. Both of the components have an…
We have used the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS and laser guide star adaptive optics at Keck Observatory to obtain high angular resolution (0.06"), moderate spectral resolution (R ~ 3800) images of the bipolar jet from the Herbig Ae star LkHa 233, seen in near-IR [Fe II] emission at 1.600 & 1.644 microns. This jet is narrow and tightly collimated, with an opening angle of only 9 degrees, and has an average radial velocity of ~ 100 km/s. The jet and counterjet are asymmetric, with the red-shifted jet much clumpier than its counterpart at the angular resolution of our observations. The obser…
In this paper we study the near-infrared emission spectrum of IRAS 16594-4656, a bipolar post-AGB star with spectral type B7 and no observed ionization. Using optical and near-infrared photometry we determined the total extinction towards this object to be A_V=7.5 +/- 0.4 mag and derived a distance of 2.2 +/- 0.4 kpc, assuming a luminosity of 10^4 L_sol. The near-infrared spectrum shows strong H_2 emission lines and some typical metastable shock excited lines such as [Fe II] 1.257 & 1.644 micron. We determined the rotational and vibrational excitation temperatures, as well as the ortho-to-para…
We report high angular-resolution (~1") CO J=3--2 interferometric mapping, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), of IRAS22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST SNAPshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower-resolution (~10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (~220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Msun) bipolar ou…
We obtained H-band polarimetric data of IRAS 19312+1950 using the near-infrared camera (CIAO) on the 8 m Subaru telescope. In order to investigate the physical properties of the central star and the nebula, we performed dust radiative transfer modeling and compared the model results with the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs), the radial profiles of the total intensity image, and the fraction of linear polarization map. The total intensity image shows a nearly spherical core with ~3" radius, an S-shaped arm extending ~10" in the northwest to southeast direction, and an extended lobe…
We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the water maser emission towards IRAS 16552-3050. The maser emission shows a velocity spread of ~170 km/s, and a bipolar distribution with a separation between the red and blueshifted groups of ~0.08". These observations and the likely post-AGB nature of the source indicate that IRAS 16552-3050 can be considered as a member of the "water fountain" class of sources (evolved stars showing H2O maser emission with a velocity spread $\ga$ 100 km/s, probably tracing collimated jets). The water maser emission in IRAS 16552-3050 does not seem to be ass…
High-resolution near-infrared HST NICMOS (F160W, F222M) images and polarization (2 um) observations were made of four bipolar proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs): IRAS 17150-3224, IRAS 17441-2411, IRAS 17245-3951, and IRAS 16594-4656. The first three of these are viewed nearly edge-on, and for the first time the central stars in them are seen. Color maps reveal a reddened torus between the bipolar lobes in the edge-on cases, with bluer lobes. The polarization values are high, with maximum values ranging from 40 to 80%. The polarization patterns are basically centrosymmetric, with some deviations in…
We demonstrate that magnetically-collimated protostellar winds will sweep ambient material into thin, radiative, momentum-conserving shells whose features reproduce those commonly observed in bipolar molecular outflows. We find the typical position-velocity and mass-velocity relations to occur in outflows in a wide variety of ambient density distributions, regardless of the time histories of their driving winds.
A hydrodynamic model involving cooling gas in the stagnation region of a collimated outflow is proposed for the formation of the giant parsec-scale bipolar envelope that surrounds the planetary nebula KjPn 8. Analytical calculations and numerical simulations are presented to evaluate the model. The envelope is considered to consist mainly of environmental gas swept-up by shocks driven by an episodic, collimated, bipolar outflow. In this model, which we call the ``free stagnation knot'' mechanism, the swept-up ambient gas located in the stagnation region of the bow-shock cools to produce a high…
We present VLBA observations of water maser emission associated with the star-forming region IRAS 21391+5802, which is embedded in a bright rimmed cometary globule in IC1396. The angular resolution of the maps is about 0.8 mas, corresponding to a spatial resolution of about 0.6 AU, at an estimated distance of 750 pc. Proper motions are derived for 10 maser features identified consistently over three epochs, which were separated by intervals of about one month. The masers appear in four groups, which are aligned linearly on the sky, roughly along a northeast-southwest direction, with a total se…
We present the first case of a highly collimated, extremely high velocity bipolar outflow in Taurus. It is powered by the low-luminosity (0.4 L_sun) source IRAS 04166+2706 and contains gas accelerated up to 50 km/s with respect to the ambient cloud both toward the blue and the red (uncorrected for projection). At the highest velocities, the outflow collimation factor exceeds 20, and the gas displays a very high degree of spatial symmetry. This very fast gas presents multiple maxima, and most likely arises from the acceleration of ambient material by a time-variable jet-like stellar wind. When …
We discuss the interaction of the slow wind blown by an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with a collimated fast wind (CFW) blown by its main sequence or white dwarf companion, at orbital separations in the range of several AU to about 200 AU. The CFW results from accretion of the AGB wind into an accretion disk around the companion. The fast wind is collimated by the accretion disk. We argue that such systems are the progenitors of bipolar planetary nebulae and bipolar symbiotic nebulae with a very narrow equatorial waist between the two polar lobes. We conduct a population synthesis study o…
Here we present the discovery of a triple radio continuum source associated with IRAS 16547-4247. The spectral indices of the three components are consistent with a jet powered by a massive O-type star in the process of formation, with the outer radio components being the shocked gas at the working surfaces of the jet. The detected radio continuum emission from the central object is thought to arise from the jet itself, prior to the formation of a detectable HII region. All three radio continuum components are located within a molecular core of mass 10^3 M_sun. Our discovery makes IRAS 16547-4…
We present [N II] and H-alpha images and high resolution long-slit spectra of the planetary nebula IC 4846, which reveal, for the first time, its complex structure and the existence of collimated outflows. The object consists of a moderately elongated shell, two (and probably three) pairs of collimated bipolar outflows at different orientations, and an attached circular shell. One of the collimated pairs is constituted by two curved, extended filaments whose properties indicate a high velocity, bipolar precessing jet. A difference of \~10 km/s is found between the systemic velocity of the prec…
The planetary nebula NGC 6881 displays in the optical a quadrupolar morphology consisting of two pairs of highly collimated bipolar lobes aligned along different directions. An additional bipolar ejection is revealed by the hydrogen molecular emission, but its wide hourglass morphology is very different from that of the ionized material. To investigate in detail the spatial distribution of molecular hydrogen and ionized material within NGC 6881, and to determine the prevalent excitation mechanism of the H2 emission, we have obtained new near-IR Br-gamma and H2 and optical H-alpha and [N II] im…
We present high-angular resolution images of the post-AGB nebula IRAS18276-1431 (also known as OH17.7-2.0) obtained with the Keck II Adaptive Optics (AO) system in its Natural Guide Star (NGS) mode in the Kp, Lp, and Ms near-infrared bands. We also present supporting optical F606W and F814W HST images as well as interferometric observations of the 12CO(J=1-0), 13CO(J=1-0), and 2.6mm continuum emission with OVRO. The envelope of IRAS18276-1431 displays a clear bipolar morphology in our optical and NIR images with two lobes separated by a dark waist and surrounded by a faint 4.5"x3.4" halo. Our …
The Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392) is a double-shell planetary nebula (PN) known for the exceptionally large expansion velocity of its inner shell, ~90 km/s, and the existence of a fast bipolar outflow with a line-of-sight expansion velocity approaching 200 km/s. We have obtained XMM-Newton observations of the Eskimo and detected diffuse X-ray emission within its inner shell. The X-ray spectra suggest thin plasma emission with a temperature of ~2x10^6 K and an X-ray luminosity of L_X = (2.6+/-1.0)x10^31 (d/1150 pc)^2 ergs/s, where d is the distance in parsecs. The diffuse X-ray emission shows notice…
Context. This is the third of a series of papers devoted to study in detail and with high-angular resolution intermediate-mass molecular outflows and their powering sources. Aims. The aim of this paper is to study the intermediate-mass YSO IRAS 20050+2720 and its molecular outflow, and put the results of this and the previous studied sources in the context of intermediate-mass star formation. Methods. We carried out VLA observations of the 7 mm continuum emission, and OVRO observations of the 2.7 mm continuum emission, CO(1-0), C18O(1-0), and HC3N(12-11) to map the core towards IRAS 20050+2720…
The spectral signature of collimated bipolar jets have been discovered on high resolution spectra of Hen 3-1341 during the 1999 outburst, the first ever recorded for this symbiotic star. The jets show up as emission components at DeltaRV = 820 km/sec on both sides of the main emission lines. They were not present in quiescence. As a general rule for the jets from stellar objects, also those in Hen 3-1341 come together with evidence of mass loss via wind (strong P-Cyg profiles).
We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of H2O and OH masers, as well as radio continuum emission at 1.3 and 18 cm toward three sources previously cataloged as planetary nebulae (PNe) and in which single-dish detections of H2O masers have been reported: IRAS 17443-2949, IRAS 17580-3111, and IRAS 18061-2505. Our goal was to unambiguously confirm their nature as water-maser-emitting PNe, a class of objects of which only two bona-fide members were previously known. We detected and mapped H2O maser emission toward all three sources, while OH maser emission is detected in IRAS 17443-2949 and…
Using the VLBA, we have observed H2O maser emission in the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 19134+2131(I19134), in which the H2O maser spectrum has two groups of emission features separated in radial velocity by ~100 km/s. We also obtained optical images of I19134 with the HST to locate the bipolar reflection nebula in this source for the first time. The spatio-kinematical structure of the H2O masers indicates the existence of a fast, collimated (precessing) flow having a projected extent of ~140 mas and an expansion rate of ~1.9 mas/yr on the sky plane, which gives a dynamical age of only ~40 yr. Th…
We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that …
We present narrow-band images and long-slit echelle spectra of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6778. The data show this PN as bipolar, with a very prominent low-excitation equatorial toroid, high-excitation lobes and two pairs of collimated outflows. Morphologically, the pairs of outflows are different from each other; one is linear and oriented along the bipolar axis, the other presents an S-shape with changing orientations. Besides the different morphology, both pairs of collimated outflows present radial velocities increasing with distance from the central star and share a common origin in br…
We report our search for optically thick radio cores in sixteen narrow-waist bipolar nebulae. Optically thick cores are a characteristic signature of collimated ionized winds. Eleven northern nebulae were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and five southern nebulae were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Two northern objects, 19W32 and M 1-91, and three southern objects, He 2-25, He 2-84 and Mz 3, were found to exhibit a compact radio core with a rising spectrum consistent with an ionized jet. Such jets have been seen in M…
We present a detailed kinematical study and modeling of the emission of the molecular cores at ambient velocities surrounding IRAS 21391+5802, an intermediate-mass protostar embedded in IC 1396N. The high-density gas emission is found in association with three dense cores associated with the YSOs BIMA 1, BIMA 2, and BIMA 3. The CS (5-4) and CH3OH (5-4) emission around BIMA 1 has been modeled by considering a spatially infinitely thin ring seen edge-on by the observer. From the model we find that CS is detected over a wider radii range than CH3OH. A bipolar outflow is detected in the CS (2-1) l…
We report TIMMI2 diffraction-limited mid-IR images of the multipolar PPN IRAS 16594-4656. By using the Lucy-Richardson deconvolution algorithm we recover a two-peaked morphology in the innermost region at 8.6 and 11.5 microns. We interpret the observed mid-IR structure as the detection of the two limb-brightened peaks indicating the presence of a dusty toroidal structure in IRAS 16594-4656. We find that the supposed biconical openings of the dust torus are in good agreement with one of the bipolar outflows identified in the HST optical images.
We report H2O masers associated with the massive-star forming region G192.16-3.84 observed with the new Japan VLBI network at three epochs spanned for two months, which have revealed the three-dimensional kinematical structure of the whole \h2o maser region in G192.16-3.84, containing two young stellar objects separated by ~1200 AU. The maser spatio-kinematical structure has well persisted since previous observations, in which the masers are expected to be associated with a highly-collimated bipolar jet and an infalling-rotating disk in the northern and southern clusters of H2O maser features,…
We have obtained near-infrared imaging and an optical spectrum of the proto-planetary nebula IRAS~07131-0147, a highly polarized bipolar reflection nebula believed to be in evolutionary transition from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase. Our images reveal point reflection symmetry in the lobes - a relatively rare morphological feature. We place an upper limit on the distance of 6.5 kpc. Utilizing numerical integrations of single grain scattering models we find the nebula to lie at an inclination angle of i=20\pm5 degrees in the plane of the sky. We present a refined geom…
We mapped the HH212 Class 0 outflow in SiO(2--1, 5--4) and continuum using the PdBI in its extended configurations. The unprecedented angular resolution (down to 0.34") allows accurate comparison with a new, deep H2 image obtained at the VLT. The SiO emission is confined to a highly-collimated bipolar jet (width 0.35") along the outflow axis. The jet can be traced down to within 500 AU of the protostar, in a region that is heavily obscured in H2 images. Where both species are detected, SiO shows the same overall kinematics and structure as H2, indicating that both molecules are tracing the sam…
In this article, we report high-resolution (~ 0.1" -- 0.3"), high-sensitivity (~ 50 -100 uJy beam-1) Very Large Array 0.7 and 1.3 cm observations of the young stellar system IRAS 16293-2422 in rho-Ophiuchus. In the 0.7 cm image, component A to the south-east of the system looks like its usual binary self. In the new 1.3 cm image, however, component A2 appears to have split into two sub-components located roughly symmetrically around the original position of A2. This change of morphology is likely the result of a recent bipolar ejection, one of the very first such events observed in a low-mass …
We present the kinematics of a sample of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) which cover a wide range of observed morphologies and collimation degrees, from bipolar PNe with a marked equatorial ring and wide lobes to highly collimated objects. We use an empirical model in order to derive the expansion velocity, collimation degree, and inclination angle of the PN with respect to the plane of the sky. The equatorial expansion velocities measured in the objects in our sample are always in the low to medium range (3-16km/s),while their polar expansion velocities range from low to very high (18-100 km/…
We propose a new model for the formation of fast, low-ionization emission regions (FLIERs) in planetary nebulae that is able to account for many of their attendant characteristics and circumvent the problems on the collimation/formation mechanisms found in previous studies. In this model, FLIERs are formed in the stagnation zone of partially collimated stellar winds with reduced momentum flow along the axis. A concave bow-shock structure is formed due to the lack of momentum flow along the axis of a midly bipolar stellar wind. The stagnation knots are formed when the shocked environment medium…
We present narrow-band optical images, VLA-A 3.6 cm continuum and H92alpha emission line data and high resolution long-slit [N II] spectra of Hu 2-1. The formation of Hu 2-1 appears dominated by anisotropic mass ejection during the late AGB stage of its progenitor and by variable, ``precessing'' collimated bipolar outflows during the proto-PN and/or early PN phases. The data strongly support the existence of a binary central star at center of Hu 2-1: (1) the brightness distribution of the bipolar lobes and inner shell is point-symmetric, and the bipolar lobes show departures from axial symmetr…
We present a study of McNeil's Nebula, a newly appeared reflection nebula in the L1630 cloud, together with photometry and spectroscopy of its source. New IR photometry compared to earlier 2MASS data shows that the star has brightened by about 3 magnitudes in the near-infrared, changing its location in a J-H/H-K diagram precisely along a reddening vector. A Gemini NIRI K-band spectrum shows strong CO-bandhead emission and Br-gamma is in emission, indicative of strong accretion. A Gemini GMOS optical spectrum shows only a red, heavily veiled continuum, with H-alpha strongly in emission and disp…
TIMMI2 diffraction-limited mid-infrared images of a multipolar proto-planetary nebula IRAS 16594-4656 and a young [WC] elliptical planetary nebula IRAS 07027-7934 are presented. Their dust shells are for the first time resolved (only marginally in the case of IRAS 07027-7934) by applying the Lucy-Richardson deconvolution algorithm to the data, taken under exceptionally good seeing conditions (<0.5"). IRAS 16594-4656 exhibits a two-peaked morphology at 8.6, 11.5 and 11.7 microns which is mainly attributed to emission from PAHs. Our observations suggest that the central star is surrounded by a t…
Molecular line CN, CS and mm continuum observations of two intermediate- to high-mass star-forming regions - IRAS20293+3952 and IRAS19410+2336 - obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer at high spatial resolution reveal interesting characteristics of the gas and dust emission. In spite of the expectation that the CN and CS morphology might closely follow the dense gas traced by the dust continuum, both molecules avoid the most central cores. Comparing the relative line strengths of various CN hyperfine components, this appears not to be an opacity effect but to be due to chemical and p…
We have analyzed sensitive high spatial resolution archival radio continuum data at 1.3, 2.0, 3.6 and 6.0 cm as well as the H2O maser molecular line data obtained using the Very Large Array (VLA) in its hybrid AB configuration toward the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 17233-3606 (G351.78-0.54). We find nine compact radio sources associated with this region, six of them are new radio detections. We discuss the characteristics of these sources based mostly on their spectral indices and find that most of them appear to be optically thin or thick ultra- and hyper-compact HII regions ionized by…
The IRAS source 03256+3055 in the NGC 1333 star forming region is associated with extended sub-millimeter emission of complex morphology, showing multiple clumps. One of these is found to coincide with the driving source of a bipolar jet of S-shaped morphology seen in the emission lines of H_alpha and [SII] as well as in the H2 emission lines in the K-band. Detailed images of the driving source at the wavelengths of H_alpha and [SII] and in the I, J, H, and K bands as well as a K-band spectrum and polarimetry are discussed. The near-infrared morphology is characterized by a combination of line…
Using the partially completed Submillimeter Array with five antennas, we have observed the CO J=2-1 and 3-2 emission from the envelope surrounding the carbon star V Hya. The high-angular resolution (2"-4") maps show that V Hya is powering a bipolar molecular jet having an extreme velocity of 70-185 km/s. The axis of this high velocity jet is perpendicular to the major axis of the flattened disk-like envelope, which is expanding with a velocity of ~16 km/s.There is a third kinematic component, a medium-velocity wind having a deprojected velocity of 40-120 km/s moving along the disk plane. Both …
We have studied optical spectra of the symbiotic star Z And, obtained during its latest outburst started in April 2006, with the aim of finding changes in the spectrum yielding clues to the nature of the hot component and its outbursts. The spectroscopic observations of Z And have been made using the 1.5-meter telescope at the Tartu Observatory, Estonia, and processed in a standard way. We have found high velocity satellites to the hydrogen Balmer emission lines. Starting from July 30, 2006, weak additional emission components at velocities of about +/-1150 km/s were detected. Their appearance…
We present molecular line observations of the massive star forming region IRAS 17233-3606 aimed at studying the molecular core associated with the source. The observations were made using the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope in the CO (3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, and in the CH_3OH (6_K-5_K), (7_K-6_K) and CH_3CN (16_K-15_K) bands. For the CO(3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, we obtained maps with a size of 70''\times 70''. The typical angular resolution of the data is ~18''. Our observations reveal an exceptionally rich molecular spectrum, a signpost of hot core activity. Comparis…
We present near infrared broad band and polarimetric images of the compact star forming cluster AFGL437 obtained with the NICMOS instrument aboard HST. Our high resolution images reveal a well collimated bipolar reflection nebulosity in the cluster and allow us to identify WK34 as the illuminating source. The scattered light in the bipolar nebulosity centered on this source is very highly polarized (up to 79%). Such high levels of polarization implies a distribution of dust grains lacking large grains, contrary to the usual dust models of dark clouds. We discuss the geometry of the dust distri…
We present high-dispersion echelle spectroscopic observations and a narrow-band [N II] image of the remarkable jet-like features of He 2-90. They are detected in the echelle spectra in the H-alpha and [N II] lines but not in other nebular lines. The [N II]/H-alpha ratio is uniformly high, ~1. The observed kinematics reveals bipolar collimated outflows in the jet-like features and shows that the southeast (northwest) component expands towards (away from) the observer at a remarkably constant line-of-sight velocity, 26.0+-0.5 km/s. The observed expansion velocity and the opening angle of the jet…
We present Very Large Array observations at 1.3 cm of several water maser detections obtained by previous single-dish studies of Bok globules in the Clemens & Barvainis (1988; CB) catalog. We report water maser emission in CB 3 (CB3-mm), CB 54 (IRAS 07020-1618), CB 101 (IRAS 17503-0833), and CB 232 (IRAS 21352+4307), and non-detection towards CB 65 (IRAS 16277-2332) and CB 205 (IRAS 19433+2743). These are the first reported interferometric observations of water masers in Bok globules of the CB catalog. We also present single-dish observations of millimeter and centimeter spectral lines towards…
We present the results of far-infrared imaging of extended regions around three bipolar pre-planetary nebulae, AFGL 2688, OH 231.8+4.2, and IRAS 16342$-$3814, at 70 and 160 $μ$m with the MIPS instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. After a careful subtraction of the point spread function of the central star from these images, we place constraints on the existence of extended shells and thus on the mass outflow rates as a function of radial distance from these stars. We find no apparent extended emission in AFGL 2688 and OH 231.8+4.2 beyond 100 arcseconds from the central source. In the case…
