The triple radio source detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has previously been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3.6-cm wavelength. In this paper, we present new 3.6 cm observations taken 2.68 years after the first epoch that allow a search for variability and proper motions, as well as the detection of additional faint sources in the region. We do not detect proper motions along the axis of the outflow in the outer lobes of this source at a 4-$σ$ upper limit of $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This suggests that these lobes are probably working surfaces where the jet is interacting with a denser medium. However, the brightest components of the lobes show evidence of precession, at a rate of $0\rlap.^\circ08$ yr$^{-1}$ clockwise in the plane of the sky. It may be possible to understand the distribution of almost all the identified sources as the result of ejecta from a precessing jet. The core of the thermal jet shows significant variations in flux density and morphology. We compare this source with other jets in low and high mass young stars and suggest that the former can be understood as a scaled-up version of the latter.
A triple radio source recently detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array at 3.6 and 2 cm. Our observations confirm the interpretation that the central object is a thermal radio jet, while the two outer lobes are most probably heavily obscured HH objects. The thermal radio jet is resolved angularly for the first time and found to align closely with the outer lobes. The opening angle of the thermal jet is estimated to be $\sim 25^\circ$, confirming that collimated outflows…
We imaged the protostars of the nearby region NGC1333 IRAS 4 in the water maser line at 22.2 GHz by using the VLBA in phase referencing at milliarcsecond scale over four epochs spaced by one month to measure proper motions. We measure the absolute positions and proper motions of the H2O spots to investigate the kinematics of the region from where the jet is launched. Two protostars (A2 and B) have been detected in a highly variable H2O maser emission, with an active phase shorter than four weeks. A 70 AU chain of several maser spots, very well aligned, has been observed close to the B protosta…
We present new narrow-band near-infrared images together with K band spectra of highly collimated bipolar jets close to the IRAS 05487+0255 source. The jets are located at 50" West of the Herbig-Haro 110 outflow. The jets are not visible at optical wavelengths, and therefore, do not fall into the `standard' Herbig-Haro object classification scheme. Nevertheless, they belong to an ever growing group of molecular hydrogen jets associated with YSOs which are optically undetected. The jets are very well collimated, with a length-to-width ratio of 10-20. The spectra of the jet and counter-jet in th…
We present high angular resolution observations, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the NRAO, of the high-velocity water masers toward the "water-fountain" pre-planetary nebula, IRAS 16342-3814. The detailed structure of the water masers appears to be that of bow shocks on either side of a highly collimated jet. The proper motions of the water masers are approximately equal to the radial velocities; the three-dimensional velocities are approximately +/-180 km/s, which leads to a very short dynamical time-scale of ~100 years. Although we do not find direct evidence for precession of t…
We follow up on our (Radhakrishnan & Deshpande, 2001: RD01) radically different interpretation of the observed structures and morphologies in the x-ray observations of the nebulae around young pulsars (PWNe). In our general model for PWNe (RD01), originally motivated by the Chandra observations of the Vela X-ray nebula, the bright arcs, the jet-like feature and the diffuse components in such nebulae can be explained together in detail, wherein the arcs are understood as traces of the particle beams from the two magnetic poles at the shock front. We consider this as important evidence for colli…
IRAS 16547-4247 is the most luminous (6.2 x 10^4 Lsun) embedded young stellar object known to harbor a thermal radio jet. We report the discovery using VLT-ISAAC of a chain of H_2 2.12 um emission knots that trace a collimated flow extending over 1.5 pc. The alignment of the H_2 flow and the central location of the radio jet implies that these phenomena are intimately linked. We have also detected using TIMMI2 an isolated, unresolved 12 um infrared source towards the radio jet . Our findings affirm that IRAS 16547-4247 is excited by a single O-type star that is driving a collimated jet. We arg…
We present observations of continuum (lambda = 0.7, 1.3, 3.6 and 18 cm) and OH maser (lambda = 18 cm) emission toward the young planetary nebula IRAS 17347-3139, which is one of the three planetary nebulae that are known to harbor water maser emission. From the continuum observations we show that the ionized shell of IRAS 17347-3139 consists of two main structures: one extended (size ~1". 5) with bipolar morphology along PA=-30 degrees, elongated in the same direction as the lobes observed in the near-infrared images, and a central compact structure (size ~0". 25) elongated in the direction pe…
We consider several protostellar systems where either a precessing jet or at least two misaligned jets have been observed. We assume that the precession of jets is caused by tidal interactions in noncoplanar binary systems. For Cep E, V1331 Cyg and RNO 15-FIR the inferred orbital separations and disk radii are in the range 4-160 AU and 1-80 AU, respectively, consistent with those expected for pre-main sequence stars. Furthermore, we assume or use the fact that the source of misaligned outflows is a binary, and evaluate the lengthscale over which the jets should precess as a result of tidal int…
We present the first case of a highly collimated, extremely high velocity bipolar outflow in Taurus. It is powered by the low-luminosity (0.4 L_sun) source IRAS 04166+2706 and contains gas accelerated up to 50 km/s with respect to the ambient cloud both toward the blue and the red (uncorrected for projection). At the highest velocities, the outflow collimation factor exceeds 20, and the gas displays a very high degree of spatial symmetry. This very fast gas presents multiple maxima, and most likely arises from the acceleration of ambient material by a time-variable jet-like stellar wind. When …
Here we present the discovery of a triple radio continuum source associated with IRAS 16547-4247. The spectral indices of the three components are consistent with a jet powered by a massive O-type star in the process of formation, with the outer radio components being the shocked gas at the working surfaces of the jet. The detected radio continuum emission from the central object is thought to arise from the jet itself, prior to the formation of a detectable HII region. All three radio continuum components are located within a molecular core of mass 10^3 M_sun. Our discovery makes IRAS 16547-4…
We present observations of IRAS 16293-2422 using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 300 GHz, and the Very Large Array (VLA) at frequencies from 1.5 to 43 GHz. This source was already known to be a binary system with components A and B separated by ~5". The new SMA data now separate source A into two submm continuum components, denoted Aa and Ab. The strongest of these, Aa, peaks between the cm radio sources A1 and A2. Archival VLA data show proper motion of sources A and B of 17 mas/yr, associated with motion of the rho Ophiuchi cloud. We also find relative motion between A1 and A2 which exclude…
Using the VLBA, we have observed H2O maser emission in the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 19134+2131(I19134), in which the H2O maser spectrum has two groups of emission features separated in radial velocity by ~100 km/s. We also obtained optical images of I19134 with the HST to locate the bipolar reflection nebula in this source for the first time. The spatio-kinematical structure of the H2O masers indicates the existence of a fast, collimated (precessing) flow having a projected extent of ~140 mas and an expansion rate of ~1.9 mas/yr on the sky plane, which gives a dynamical age of only ~40 yr. Th…
We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the water maser emission towards IRAS 16552-3050. The maser emission shows a velocity spread of ~170 km/s, and a bipolar distribution with a separation between the red and blueshifted groups of ~0.08". These observations and the likely post-AGB nature of the source indicate that IRAS 16552-3050 can be considered as a member of the "water fountain" class of sources (evolved stars showing H2O maser emission with a velocity spread $\ga$ 100 km/s, probably tracing collimated jets). The water maser emission in IRAS 16552-3050 does not seem to be ass…
We present the first direct measurements of the magnetic field strength and direction in a collimated jet from an evolved star on its way to become a planetary nebula. Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the linear and circular polarization of the water masers in the collimated jet of W43A reveal a strong toroidal magnetic field, indicating that the jet is magnetically collimated. The magnetic field strength in the jet extrapolated back to the stellar surface yields a surface field of several Gauss, consistent with the measurements of maser polarization in a large sample of evolved…
We present a study of McNeil's Nebula, a newly appeared reflection nebula in the L1630 cloud, together with photometry and spectroscopy of its source. New IR photometry compared to earlier 2MASS data shows that the star has brightened by about 3 magnitudes in the near-infrared, changing its location in a J-H/H-K diagram precisely along a reddening vector. A Gemini NIRI K-band spectrum shows strong CO-bandhead emission and Br-gamma is in emission, indicative of strong accretion. A Gemini GMOS optical spectrum shows only a red, heavily veiled continuum, with H-alpha strongly in emission and disp…
We have analyzed sensitive high spatial resolution archival radio continuum data at 1.3, 2.0, 3.6 and 6.0 cm as well as the H2O maser molecular line data obtained using the Very Large Array (VLA) in its hybrid AB configuration toward the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 17233-3606 (G351.78-0.54). We find nine compact radio sources associated with this region, six of them are new radio detections. We discuss the characteristics of these sources based mostly on their spectral indices and find that most of them appear to be optically thin or thick ultra- and hyper-compact HII regions ionized by…
We present high-spatial resolution Plateau de Bure Interferometer CO(2-1) and SiO(2-1) observations of one intermediate-mass and one high-mass star-forming region. The intermediate-mass region IRAS20293+3952 exhibits four molecular outflows, one being as collimated as the highly collimated jet-like outflows observed in low-mass star formation sources. Furthermore, comparing the data with additional infrared H2 and cm observations we see indications that the nearby ultracompact HII region triggers a shock wave interacting with the outflow. The high-mass region IRAS19217+1651 exhibits a bipolar …
We present high-dispersion echelle spectroscopic observations and a narrow-band [N II] image of the remarkable jet-like features of He 2-90. They are detected in the echelle spectra in the H-alpha and [N II] lines but not in other nebular lines. The [N II]/H-alpha ratio is uniformly high, ~1. The observed kinematics reveals bipolar collimated outflows in the jet-like features and shows that the southeast (northwest) component expands towards (away from) the observer at a remarkably constant line-of-sight velocity, 26.0+-0.5 km/s. The observed expansion velocity and the opening angle of the jet…
We present the results of 22 GHz H_2O maser observations of a sample of 85 post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) candidate stars, selected on the basis of their OH 1612 MHz maser and far-infrared properties. All sources were observed with the Tidbinbilla 70-m radio telescope and 21 detections were made. 86 GHz SiO Mopra observations of a subset of the sample are also presented. Of the 21 H_2O detections, 15 are from sources that are likely to be massive AGB stars and most of these show typical, regular H_2O maser profiles. In contrast, nearly all the detections of more evolved stars exhibite…
Near-infrared observations towards the luminous IRAS source IRAS11101-5928 and the associated Herbig-Haro objects HH135/HH136 are presented. The observations reveal the presence of a well-collimated, parsec-sized H$_2$ outflow with a total H$_2$ luminosity of about $2L_\odot$. The bulk of the molecular gas is characterized by a ro-vibrational excitation temperature of $2000\pm200$ K. A small fraction (0.3%) of the molecular gas is very hot, with excitation temperatures around 5500 K. The molecular emission is associated with strong [FeII] emission. The H$_2$ and [FeII] emission characteristics…
This paper presents a detailed study of the chemistry in the outflow associated with the low-mass protostar NGC1333-IRAS2A down to 3" (650 AU) scales. Millimeter-wavelength aperture-synthesis observations from the OVRO and BIMA interferometers and (sub)millimeter single-dish observations from the Onsala 20m telescope and CSO are presented. The interaction of the highly collimated protostellar outflow with a molecular condensation ~15000 AU from the central protostar is clearly traced by molecular species such as HCN, SiO, SO, CS, and CH3OH. Especially SiO traces a narrow high velocity componen…
We performed interferometric observations of a high-mass protostellar candidate IRAS 18566+0408 in the \nh3 (J,K)=(1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) inversion transitions, the SiO J=2-1 and HCN J=1-0 lines, and the 43 and 87 GHz continuum emission using the VLA and OVRO. The 87 GHz continuum emission reveals two continuum peaks MM-1 and MM-2 along a molecular ridge. The dominant peak MM-1 coincides with a compact emission feature at 43 GHz, and arises mostly from the dust emission. For dust emissivity index $β$ of 1.3, the masses in the dust peaks amount to 70 \msun for MM-1, and 27 \msun for MM-2. Assumi…
We report the direct detection of a binary/disk system towards the high-mass (proto)stellar object IRAS20126+4104 at infrared wavengths. The presence of a multiple system had been indicated by the precession of the outflow and the double jet system detected earlier at cm-wavelengths. Our new K, L' & M' band infrared images obtained with the UKIRT under exceptional seeing conditions on Mauna Kea are able to resolve the central source for the first time, and we identify two objects separated by ~ 0.5'' (850 AU). The K and L' images also uncover features characteristic of a nearly edge-on disk, s…
We report high angular-resolution (~1") CO J=3--2 interferometric mapping, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), of IRAS22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST SNAPshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower-resolution (~10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (~220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Msun) bipolar ou…
We discuss the properties of compact nuclear radio components in Seyfert galaxies from the extended 12-micron AGN sample of Rush et al.(1993). Our main results can be summarised as follows. Type 1 and type 2 Seyferts produce compact radio components which are indistinguishable in strength and aspect, indicating that their central engines are alike as proposed by the unification model. Infrared IRAS fluxes are more closely correlated with low-resolution radio fluxes than high-resolution radio fluxes, suggesting that they are dominated by kiloparsec-scale, extra-nuclear emission regions; extra-n…
We present here an extensive analysis of the protostellar jet driven by IRAS 20126+4104, deriving the kinematical, dynamical, and physical conditions of the H2 gas along the flow. The jet has been investigated by means of near-IR H2 and [FeII] narrow-band imaging, high resolution spectroscopy of the 1-0S(1) line (2.12 um), NIR (0.9-2.5 um) low resolution spectroscopy, along with ISO-SWS and LWS spectra (from 2.4 to 200 um). The flow shows a complex morphology. In addition to the large-scale jet precession presented in previous studies, we detect a small-scale wiggling close to the source, that…
(abridged) We study a previously discovered protostellar source that is deeply embedded and drives an energetic molecular outflow. The source, UYSO1, is located close to IRAS 07029-1215 at a distance of ~1 kpc. The multi-wavelength observations resulted in the detection of a double intermediate-mass protostar at the location of UYSO1. In addition to the associated molecular outflow, with a projected size of 0.25 pc, two intersecting near-infrared jets with projected sizes of 0.4 pc and 0.2 pc were found. However, no infrared counterparts to the driving sources could be detected in sensitive ne…
We present the results of a multi-epoch VLBA study of the powerful radio source 4C +12.50 (PKS 1345+125) at a wavelength of 2 cm. This compact radio source is associated with a hidden quasar whose host galaxy shows signs of a recent merger. It has been classified as a compact symmetric source (CSO) due to its small overall size (~220 pc) and twin-jet morphology, although it also has faint extended emission that may be a relic of previous activity. We report the detection of exceedingly high linear fractional polarization in isolated features of the southern jet (up to 60%), which is highly unu…
Massive stars form in dense and massive molecular cores. The exact formation mechanism is unclear, but it is possible that some massive stars are formed by processes similar to those that produce the low-mass stars, with accretion/ejection phenomena occurring at some point of the evolution of the protostar. This picture seems to be supported by the detection of a collimated stellar wind emanating from the massive protostar IRAS 16547-4247. A triple radio source is associated with the protostar: a compact core and two radio lobes. The emission of the southern lobe is clearly non-thermal. Such e…
We present here new observations conducted with the EVN and MERLIN of the persistent microquasar LS 5039 discovered by Paredes et al. (2000) with the VLBA. The new observations confirm the presence of an asymmetric two-sided jet reaching up to 1000 AU on the longest jet arm. The results suggest a bending of the jets with increasing distance from the core and/or precession. The origin and location of the high-energy gamma-ray emission associated with the system is discussed and an estimate of the magnetic field at the base of the jet given. Our results suggest a well collimated radio jet. We al…
The recently discovered protostellar jet known as HH212 is beautifully symmetric, with a series of paired shock knots and bow shocks on either side of the exciting source region, IRAS 05413-0104 (Zinnecker et al. 1998). We present VLA ammonia maps of the IRAS 05413-0104 molecular gas envelope in which the protostellar jet source is embedded. We find that the envelope, with mass of 0.2 M(sun) detected by the interferometer, is flattened perpendicular to the jet axis with a FWHM diameter of 12000 AU and an axis ratio of 2:1, as seen in NH3 (1,1) emission. There is a velocity gradient of about 4-…
HH 212 is a highly collimated jet discovered in H2 powered by a young Class 0 source, IRAS 05413-0104, in the L1630 cloud of Orion. We have mapped around it in 1.33 mm continuum, 12CO ($J=2-1$), 13CO ($J=2-1$), C18O ($J=2-1$), and SO ($J_K = 6_5-5_4$) emission at $\sim$ \arcs{2.5} resolution with the Submillimeter Array. A dust core is seen in the continuum around the source. A flattened envelope is seen in C18O around the source in the equator perpendicular to the jet axis, with its inner part seen in 13CO. The structure and kinematics of the envelope can be roughly reproduced by a simple edg…
HH 212 is a nearby (460 pc) protostellar jet discovered in H$_2$ powered by a Class 0 source, IRAS 05413-0104, in the L1630 cloud of Orion. It is highly collimated and symmetric with matched pairs of bow shocks on either side of the source. We have mapped it in 850 $μ$m continuum, SiO ($J=8-7$), CO ($J=3-2$), SO ($N_J=8_9-7_8$), HCO$^+$ ($J = 4-3$), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J = 4-3$) emission simultaneously at $\sim$ 1$''$ resolution with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Thermal dust emission is seen in continuum around the source, mainly arising from an inner envelope (i.e., the inner part of a pre…
