We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the water maser emission towards IRAS 16552-3050. The maser emission shows a velocity spread of ~170 km/s, and a bipolar distribution with a separation between the red and blueshifted groups of ~0.08". These observations and the likely post-AGB nature of the source indicate that IRAS 16552-3050 can be considered as a member of the "water fountain" class of sources (evolved stars showing H2O maser emission with a velocity spread $\ga$ 100 km/s, probably tracing collimated jets). The water maser emission in IRAS 16552-3050 does not seem to be associated with with any known optical counterpart. Moreover, this source does not have a near-IR 2MASS counterpart, as it happens in about half of the water fountains known. This suggests that these sources tend to be heavily obscured objects, probably with massive precursors ($\ga 4-5$ M$_\odot$). We suggest that the water maser emission in IRAS 16552-3050 could be tracing a rapidly precessing bipolar jet.
We present radio continuum observations at 7 mm made using the Very Large Array towards three massive star forming regions thought to be in very early stages of evolution selected from the sample of Sridharan et al. (2002). Emission was detected towards all three sources (IRAS 18470-0044, IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912). We find that in all cases the 7 mm emission corresponds to thermal emission from ionized gas. The regions of ionized gas associated with IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912 are hypercompact with diameters of 0.009 and 0.0006 pc, and emission measures of 7.0 x 10^8 and 2.3…
We present high angular resolution observations, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the NRAO, of the high-velocity water masers toward the "water-fountain" pre-planetary nebula, IRAS 16342-3814. The detailed structure of the water masers appears to be that of bow shocks on either side of a highly collimated jet. The proper motions of the water masers are approximately equal to the radial velocities; the three-dimensional velocities are approximately +/-180 km/s, which leads to a very short dynamical time-scale of ~100 years. Although we do not find direct evidence for precession of t…
We present VLA radio continuum observations at 3.6 and 6 cm of a ~0.65 sq.deg. field in the galactic plane at l=+45deg . These observations are meant to be used in a comparison with ISO observations at 7 and 15 um of the same region. In this paper we compare the radio results with other radio surveys and with the IRAS-PSC. At 3.6 and/or 6 cm we detect a total of 34 discrete sources, 13 of which are found in five separate extended complexes. These are all multiple or single extended thermal ultra-compact HII (UCHII) regions. While for each of these complexes an IRAS counterpart could be reliabl…
We present the results of 22 GHz H_2O maser observations of a sample of 85 post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) candidate stars, selected on the basis of their OH 1612 MHz maser and far-infrared properties. All sources were observed with the Tidbinbilla 70-m radio telescope and 21 detections were made. 86 GHz SiO Mopra observations of a subset of the sample are also presented. Of the 21 H_2O detections, 15 are from sources that are likely to be massive AGB stars and most of these show typical, regular H_2O maser profiles. In contrast, nearly all the detections of more evolved stars exhibite…
This paper presents the results of a high resolution radio imaging survey of 83 of the 118 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) in the IRAS 1 Jy ULIRG sample. We have observed these ULIRGs at 15GHz with the Very Large Array (VLA). We find that ~75% of Seyferts (both type 1 and 2) and LINERs have radio nuclei which are compact at our 150mas resolution. The detection rate of HII nuclei is significantly lower (32%); the detections among these are preferentially HII + LINER/Seyfert composite nuclei. Among ULIRGs with multiple optical or near-IR nuclei our observations detected only one (or no)…
We employed the Very Large Array (VLA) of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in C configuration to map 39 ultraluminous IRAS galaxies at 6~cm and 20~cm, at resolutions of ~ 4" and 15", respectively, and 24 sources at 6~cm with in the A configuration with a resolution of ~0.5". Most of the sources have radio spectral indices indicative of synchrotron emission (alpha ~ -0.65). There is one source, however, that shows an inverted spectrum with alpha = +2.1; observations at higher frequencies show that the spectrum peaks between 5 and 8 GHz, as high as any of the ``gigahertz peaked spectrum'…
[Context] Water fountain stars are very young post-AGB stars with high velocity water maser jets. They are the best objects to study the onset of bipolar jets from evolved stars due to their young dynamical ages. [Methods] We use the Arizona Radio Observatory 10m telescope to observe the CO J=2-1 line and compare the line parameters with that of masers. [Results] We report the detection of 12CO and 13COJ=2-1 lines from IRAS 16342-3814. The inferred 12CO mass loss rate is an order of magnitude lower than the infrared and OH mass loss rates, indicating a very cold and thick O-rich circumstellar …
We report on a water maser survey towards a sample of 27 planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Robledo de Chavela and Medicina single-dish antennas, as well as the Very Large Array (VLA). Two detections have been obtained: the already known water maser emission in K 3-35, and a new cluster of masers in IRAS 17347-3139. This low rate of detections is compatible with the short life-time of water molecules in PNe (~100 yr). The water maser cluster at IRAS 17347-3139 are distributed on a ellipse of size ~ 0.2" x 0.1", spatially associated with compact 1.3 cm continuum emission (simultaneously observed…
Aims: We investigated the possible relationship between the evolutionary stage of post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae (PNe) and the presence of water masers in their envelopes. Methods: We have used NASA's 70-m antenna in Robledo de Chavela (Spain) to search for the water maser transition at 22235.08 MHz, towards a sample of 105 sources with IRAS colour characteristic of post-AGB stars and PNe at declination >-32 deg. 83% of the sources in the sample are post-AGB stars, 15% PNe or PN candidates, while only 2% seem to be HII regions. Results: We have detected five water masers, of which four a…
We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of H2O and OH masers, as well as radio continuum emission at 1.3 and 18 cm toward three sources previously cataloged as planetary nebulae (PNe) and in which single-dish detections of H2O masers have been reported: IRAS 17443-2949, IRAS 17580-3111, and IRAS 18061-2505. Our goal was to unambiguously confirm their nature as water-maser-emitting PNe, a class of objects of which only two bona-fide members were previously known. We detected and mapped H2O maser emission toward all three sources, while OH maser emission is detected in IRAS 17443-2949 and…
We present observations of IRAS 16293-2422 using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 300 GHz, and the Very Large Array (VLA) at frequencies from 1.5 to 43 GHz. This source was already known to be a binary system with components A and B separated by ~5". The new SMA data now separate source A into two submm continuum components, denoted Aa and Ab. The strongest of these, Aa, peaks between the cm radio sources A1 and A2. Archival VLA data show proper motion of sources A and B of 17 mas/yr, associated with motion of the rho Ophiuchi cloud. We also find relative motion between A1 and A2 which exclude…
We have analyzed sensitive high spatial resolution archival radio continuum data at 1.3, 2.0, 3.6 and 6.0 cm as well as the H2O maser molecular line data obtained using the Very Large Array (VLA) in its hybrid AB configuration toward the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 17233-3606 (G351.78-0.54). We find nine compact radio sources associated with this region, six of them are new radio detections. We discuss the characteristics of these sources based mostly on their spectral indices and find that most of them appear to be optically thin or thick ultra- and hyper-compact HII regions ionized by…
IRAS 23385+6053 is a Young Stellar Object with luminosity 16,000 solar luminosities at a kinematic distance of 4.9 kpc. This candidate precursor of an ultracompact HII region is associated with a millimeter source detected at the JCMT but is undetected at centimeter wavelengths with the VLA. We observed this source with the OVRO millimeter array at 3.4 mm in the continuum, HCO+(1-0), H13CO+(1-0) and SiO(v=0, 2-1) line emission, and with CAM aboard ISO at 6.75 and 15 um. The IRAS source is coincident with a 3.4 mm compact (r~0.048 pc) and massive (M~370 solar masses) core, which is undetected a…
We report a radio detection of supernova SN 2004ip in the circumnuclear region of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413, using Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 8.4 GHz on 11 June 2007. SN 2004ip had been previously discovered at near-infrared wavelengths using adaptive optics observations, but its nature (core-collapse or thermonuclear) could not be definitely established. Our radio detection, about three years after the explosion of the supernova, indicates a prominent interaction of the ejecta of SN 2004ip with the circumstellar medium, confirming that the supernova was a core-c…
Water vapor maser emission in the 6_{16}-5_{23} transition towards the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy NGC 4051 has been discovered during an ongoing single-dish extragalactic water maser survey. The Doppler-shifted maser components appear to bracket maser components lying near the systemic velocity of the galaxy symmetrically. The tentative result of a Very Large Array (VLA) snapshot observation is that the masers are confined within 0.1 arcsec (5 pc at a distance D = 9.7 Mpc) of the radio continuum peak seen at 8.4 GHz. The low luminosity of the maser (~2 Lsun) is not typical for masers …
The triple radio source detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has previously been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3.6-cm wavelength. In this paper, we present new 3.6 cm observations taken 2.68 years after the first epoch that allow a search for variability and proper motions, as well as the detection of additional faint sources in the region. We do not detect proper motions along the axis of the outflow in the outer lobes of this source at a 4-$σ$ upper limit of $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This suggest…
We present phase-referenced VLBI results on the radio continuum and the OH 18 cm megamaser emission from the Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy, IRAS 17208--0014. The observations were carried out at 1599 MHz using the Very Long Baseline Array, the phased VLA, and the Green Bank Telescope. The highest resolution radio continuum results show several compact sources with brightness temperatures on the order of $10^{6}$ K. These sources are more likely to be clustered supernova remnants and/or luminous radio supernovae. However, the agreement between the number of observed and expected compact source…
We present high angular resolution (12"-24") and high sensitivity 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 and J=1-0 observations of the HH 1-2 outflow. The observations show the molecular counterpart, moving with a velocity of approx. 30 km/s, of the optical bipolar system driven by the VLA 1 embedded source. Along the optical jet there are certain regions where the molecular gas reaches deprojected velocities of 100-200 km/s, and that we interpret as the molecular jet. The bipolar CO outflow has a length of approx. 260" with a curved morphology towards the North where it extends beyond the HH 1 object (approx. 1…
To try and confirm the types of object in the list of 2298 potential HII regions identified by Hughes \& MacLeod from the IRAS Point Source Catalog, we selected a sample of 82 for observing at the VLA. We selected half with values of Y = log(F$_{25}$/F$_{12}$) $\geq$ 0.8, and for control purposes, half with values of 0.3 $\leq$ log(F$_{25}$/F$_{12}$) $\leq$ 0.5. 78 radio sources were detected, and of all the objects, 72\% had at least one associated radio source. Most of the radio sources had diameters of $<$ 3\arcsec, which was the limit to the angular resolving power of the survey. Those wit…
We present new VLA C-configuration HI imaging of the Lyman Alpha-emitting starburst galaxies Tol 1924-416 and IRAS 08339+6517. The effective resolution probes neutral gas structures larger than 4.7 kpc in Tol 1924-416, and larger than 8.1 kpc in IRAS 08339+6517. Both systems are revealed to be tidally interacting: Tol 1924-416 with ESO 338-IG04B (6.6 arcminutes = 72 kpc minimum separation), and IRAS 08339+6517 with 2MASX J08380769+6508579 (2.4 arcminutes = 56 kpc minimum separation). The HI emission is extended in these systems, with tidal tails and debris between the target galaxies and their…
We present observations of the region between 5deg < l < 45deg and |b| < 3deg, in the OH 1612 MHz line, taken from 1993 to 1995 with the VLA. These observations are the last part of a larger survey, covering |l| < 45deg and |b| < 3deg, with the ATCA and the VLA. The region was systematically observed on a 30'x30' grid in (l,b) and the resulting coverage was 92%, with 965 pointings. We found 286 OH--masing objects, 161 of which are new detections and 207 have reliable IRAS point-source identifications. The outflow velocity was determined for 276 sources. A total of 766 sources were detected in …
Context. This is the third of a series of papers devoted to study in detail and with high-angular resolution intermediate-mass molecular outflows and their powering sources. Aims. The aim of this paper is to study the intermediate-mass YSO IRAS 20050+2720 and its molecular outflow, and put the results of this and the previous studied sources in the context of intermediate-mass star formation. Methods. We carried out VLA observations of the 7 mm continuum emission, and OVRO observations of the 2.7 mm continuum emission, CO(1-0), C18O(1-0), and HC3N(12-11) to map the core towards IRAS 20050+2720…
We report high spatial resolution VLA observations of the low-mass star-forming region IRAS 16293-2422 using four molecular probes: ethyl cyanide (CH$_3$CH$_2$CN), methyl formate (CH$_3$OCHO), formic acid (HCOOH), and the ground vibrational state of silicon monoxide (SiO). Ethyl cyanide emiss ion has a spatial scale of $\sim20''$ and encompasses binary cores A and B as determined by continuum emission peaks. Surrounded by formic acid emission, methyl formate emission has a spatial scale of $\sim6''$and is confined to core B. SiO emission shows two velocity components with spatial scales less t…
We present high angular resolution observations toward two massive star forming regions IRAS 18264-1152 and IRAS 23151+5912 with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) in the SiO (J=2-1) and H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ (J=1-0) lines and at 1.3 mm and 3.4 mm continuum, and with the Very Large Array (VLA) in the NH$_3$ (J,K)=(1,1), (2,2) lines. The NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) emission is detected toward IRAS 18264-1152 only. For IRAS 18264-1152, the SiO observations reveal at least two quasi-perpendicular outflows with high collimation factors, and the most dominant feature is a redshifted jet-like outflow w…
We present phase-referenced VLBI observations of the radio continuum emission from, and the neutral hydrogen 21 cm absorption toward, the Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 17208-0014. The observations were carried out at 1362 MHz using the Very Long Baseline Array, including the phased Very Large Array as an element. The high-resolution radio continuum images reveal a nuclear starburst region in this galaxy, which is composed of diffuse emission approximately 670 x 340 pc on the plane of the sky, and a number of compact sources. These sources are most likely to be clustered supernova remnant…
We aim at studying the cluster environment surrounding the UCHII region in IRAS 20293+3952, a region in the first stages of formation of a cluster around a high-mass star. BIMA and VLA were used to observe the 3 mm continuum, N2H+(1-0), NH3(1,1) and (2,2), and CH3OH(2-1) emission of the surroundings of the UCHII region. We studied the kinematics of the region and computed the rotational temperature and column density maps by fitting the hyperfine structure of N2H+ and NH3. The dense gas traced by N2H+ and NH3 shows two different clouds, a main cloud to the east of the UCHII region, of 0.5 pc a…
We performed interferometric observations of a high-mass protostellar candidate IRAS 18566+0408 in the \nh3 (J,K)=(1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) inversion transitions, the SiO J=2-1 and HCN J=1-0 lines, and the 43 and 87 GHz continuum emission using the VLA and OVRO. The 87 GHz continuum emission reveals two continuum peaks MM-1 and MM-2 along a molecular ridge. The dominant peak MM-1 coincides with a compact emission feature at 43 GHz, and arises mostly from the dust emission. For dust emissivity index $β$ of 1.3, the masses in the dust peaks amount to 70 \msun for MM-1, and 27 \msun for MM-2. Assumi…
We present high-resolution, multiwavelength continuum and molecular-line images of the massive star forming region IRAS 18317-0757. The IR through mm spectral energy distribution can be approximated by a two-temperature model (25 and 63 K) with a total luminosity of approximately log(L/Lsun)=5.2. Previous submm imaging resolved this region into a cluster of 5 dust cores, one of which is associated with the UCHII region G23.96+0.15, and another with an H2O maser. In our new 2.7 mm continuum image, only the UCHII region is detected, with total flux and morphology in good agreement with the free-…
We present Very Large Array observations at 7 mm of the sources IRAS 2A, IRAS 2B, MMS2, MMS3 and SVS 13, in the NGC1333 region. SVS 13 is a young close binary system whose components are separated by 65 AU in projection. Our high angular resolution observations reveal that only one of the components of the SVS 13 system (VLA 4B) is associated with detectable circumstellar dust emission. This result is in contrast with the well known case of L1551 IRS5, a binary system of two protostars separated by 45 AU, where each component is associated with a disk of dust. Both in SVS 13 and in L1551 IRS5 …
The HEGRA Cherenkov telescope array group recently reported a steady and extended unidentified TeV gamma-ray source lying at the outskirts of Cygnus OB2. This is the most massive stellar association known in the Galaxy, estimated to contain ~2600 OB type members alone. It has been previously argued that the large scale shocks and turbulence induced by the multiple interacting supersonic winds from the many young stars in such associations may play a role in accelerating Galactic cosmic rays. Indeed, Cyg OB2 also coincides with the non-variable MeV-GeV range unidentified EGRET source, 3EG 2033+…
We report the detection of 22 GHz water vapor emission toward the starburst galaxy NGC2146, made using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Interferometric observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) show that a part of the emission originates from two prominent sites of star formation that are associated with compact radio continuum sources, likely ultra-compact HII regions. It is concluded that the emission arises from the most luminous and distant water `kilomasers' detected so far. Our data increase the number of water maser detections in northern galaxies (Dec > -30 deg) with 100 micron IRAS …
We have mapped the central region of the HH 111 protostellar system in 1.33 mm continuum, C18O(J=2-1), 13CO (J=2-1), and SO (N_J=5_6-4_5) emission at ~3" resolution with the Submillimeter Array. There are two sources, VLA 1 (=IRAS 05491+0247) and VLA 2, with the VLA 1 source driving the HH 111 jet. Thermal emission is seen in 1.33 mm continuum tracing the dust in the envelope and the putative disks around the sources. A flattened, torus-like envelope is seen in C18O and 13CO around the VLA 1 source surrounding the dust lane perpendicular to the jet axis, with an inner radius of ~ 400 AU (1"), …
We present the results of millimeter and centimeter continuum observations, made with the IRAM 30m telescope and the VLA, toward a sample of 11 luminous IRAS sources classified as high-mass protostellar object candidates. We find 1.2 mm emission for all (but one) regions likely tracing the dust core in which the massive young stellar object is forming, for which we estimate masses ranging from 10 to 140 Msun. For all the sources, but one, we detect centimeter emission associated with the IRAS source, being compact or ultracompact HII region candidates, with early B-type stars as ionizing stars…
We present a study of the structure and dynamics of the star forming region B1-IRS (IRAS 03301+3057) using the properties of different molecules at high angular resolution (~4''). We have used VLA observations of NH3, CCS, and H2O masers at 1 cm. CCS emission shows three clumps around the central source, with a velocity gradient from red to blueshifted velocities towards the protostar, probably due to the interaction with outflowing material. Water maser emission is elongated in the same direction as a reflection nebula detected at 2micron by 2MASS, with the maser spots located in a structure …
New infrared and millimeter observations from Keck, Palomar, ISO, and OVRO and archival data from the NRAO VLA and IRAS are presented for the low metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Mid-infrared imaging shows this young star-forming system is compact (0.31"; 80 pc) at 12.5 microns. The large Br-gamma equivalent width (235 Angstroms) measured from integral field spectroscopy is indicative of a ~5 Myr starburst. The central source appears to be optically thin in emission, containing both a warm (~80 K) and a hot (~210 K) dust component, and the overall interstellar radiation fiel…
In this work we present VLA observations of the NH3, CCS, and H2O maser emission at 1 cm from the star forming region B1-IRS (IRAS 03301+3057) with ~ 5" (=1750 AU) of angular resolution. CCS emission is distributed in three clumps around the central source. These clumps exhibit a velocity gradient from red- to blueshifted velocities toward B1-IRS, probably due to an interaction with the outflow from an embedded protostar. The outflow and its powering source are traced by a reflection nebula and an associated infrared point source detected in a 2MASS K-band image. We find that this infrared poi…
We present 1.35 mm SMA observations around the low-mass Class 0 source IRAS 19156+1906, at the the center of the L723 dark cloud. We detected emission from dust as well as emission from H2CO, DCN and CN, which arise from two cores, SMA 1 and SMA 2, separated by 2.9" (880 AU). SMA 2 is associated with VLA 2. SiO 5-4 emission is detected, possibly tracing a region of interaction between the dense envelope and the outflow. We modeled the dust and the H2CO emission from the two cores: they have similar physical properties but SMA 2 has a larger p-H2CO abundance than SMA 1. The p-H2CO abundances fo…
