We present here an extensive analysis of the protostellar jet driven by IRAS 20126+4104, deriving the kinematical, dynamical, and physical conditions of the H2 gas along the flow. The jet has been investigated by means of near-IR H2 and [FeII] narrow-band imaging, high resolution spectroscopy of the 1-0S(1) line (2.12 um), NIR (0.9-2.5 um) low resolution spectroscopy, along with ISO-SWS and LWS spectra (from 2.4 to 200 um). The flow shows a complex morphology. In addition to the large-scale jet precession presented in previous studies, we detect a small-scale wiggling close to the source, that may indicate the presence of a multiple system. The peak radial velocities of the H2 knots range from -42 to -14 km s^-1 in the blue lobe, and from -8 to 47 km s^-1 in the red lobe. The low resolution spectra are rich in H_2 emission, and relatively faint [FeII] (NIR), [OI] and [CII] (FIR) emission is observed in the region close to the source. A warm H2 gas component has an average excitation temperature that ranges between 2000 K and 2500 K. Additionally, the ISO-SWS spectrum reveals the presence of a cold component (520 K), that strongly contributes to the radiative cooling of the flow and plays a major role in the dynamics of the flow. The estimated L(H2) of the jet is 8.2+/-0.7 L_sun, suggesting that IRAS20126+4104 has an accretion rate significantly increased compared to low-mass YSOs. This is also supported by the derived mass flux rate from the H2 lines (Mflux(H2)~7.5x10^-4 M_sun yr^-1). The comparison between the H2 and the outflow parameters strongly indicates that the jet is driving, at least partially, the outflow. As already found for low-mass protostellar jets, the measured H2 outflow luminosity is tightly related to the source bolometric luminosity.
We present Sloan Digital Sky Survey and United States Naval Observatory observations of the V1647 Ori protostar and surrounding field near NGC 2068. V1647 Ori, the likely driving source for HH 23, brightened significantly in November 2003. Analysis of SDSS imaging acquired in November 1998 and February 2002 during the quiescent state, recent USNO photometry, and published 2MASS and Gemini data shows that the color changes associated with brightening suggest an EXor outburst rather than a simple dust clearing event.
Complex organic molecules have previously been discovered in solar type protostars, raising the questions of where and how they form in the envelope. Possible formation mechanisms include grain mantle evaporation, interaction of the outflow with its surroundings or the impact of UV/X-rays inside the cavities. In this Letter we present the first interferometric observations of two complex molecules, CH3CN and HCOOCH3, towards the solar type protostar IRAS16293-2422. The images show that the emission originates from two compact regions centered on the two components of the binary system. We disc…
We report the detection of complex molecules (HCOOCH_3, HCOOH and CH_3CN), signposts of a "hot core" like region, toward the low mass, Class 0 source NGC1333-IRAS4A. This is the second low mass protostar where such complex molecules have been searched for and reported, the other source being IRAS16293-2422. It is therefore likely that compact (few tens of AUs) regions of dense and warm gas, where the chemistry is dominated by the evaporation of grain mantles, and where complex molecules are found, are common in low mass Class 0 sources.Given that the chemical formation timescale is much shorte…
We report on the first multi-epoch, phase referenced VLBI observations of the water maser emission in a high-mass protostar associated with a disk-jet system. The source under study, IRAS 20126+4104, has been extensively investigated in a large variety of tracers, including water maser VLBA data acquired by us three years before the present observations. The new findings fully confirm the interpretation proposed in our previous study, namely that the maser spots are expanding from a common origin coincident with the protostar. We also demonstrate that the observed 3-D velocities of the maser s…
We have observed the massive star forming region, IRAS 18507+0121, at millimeter wavelengths in 3 mm continuum emission and H13CO+(J=1-0) and SiO(v=0, J=2-1) line emission, and at near-infrared wavelengths between 1.2 and 2.1 microns. Two compact molecular cores are detected: one north and one south separated by about 40". The northern molecular core contains a newly discovered, deeply embedded, B2 protostar surrounded by several hundred solar masses of warm gas and dust, G34.4+0.23 MM. Based on the presence of warm dust emission and the lack of detection at near-infrared wavelengths, we sugge…
A triple radio source recently detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array at 3.6 and 2 cm. Our observations confirm the interpretation that the central object is a thermal radio jet, while the two outer lobes are most probably heavily obscured HH objects. The thermal radio jet is resolved angularly for the first time and found to align closely with the outer lobes. The opening angle of the thermal jet is estimated to be $\sim 25^\circ$, confirming that collimated outflows…
We have made a serendipitous discovery of an enigmatic outflow source, IRAS 05506+2414 (hereafter IRAS 05506), as part of a multi-wavelength survey of pre-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The HST optical and near-infrared images show a bright compact central source with a jet-like extension, and a fan-like spray of high-velocity (with radial velocities upto 350 kms/s) elongated knots which appear to emanate from it. These structures are possibly analogous to the near-IR "bullets" seen in the Orion nebula. Interferometric observations at 2.6 mm show the presence of a high-velocity CO outflow and a con…
We present the results of a survey of a small sample (14) of low-mass protostars (L_IR < 10^3 Lsun) for 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission performed using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope. No new masers were discovered. We find that the lower luminosity limit for maser emission is near 10^3 Lsun, by comparison of the sources in our sample with previously detected methanol maser sources. We examine the IRAS properties of our sample and compare them with sources previously observed for methanol maser emission, almost all of which satisfy the Wood & Churchwell criterion for selecting candidate UCHII …
We imaged the protostars of the nearby region NGC1333 IRAS 4 in the water maser line at 22.2 GHz by using the VLBA in phase referencing at milliarcsecond scale over four epochs spaced by one month to measure proper motions. We measure the absolute positions and proper motions of the H2O spots to investigate the kinematics of the region from where the jet is launched. Two protostars (A2 and B) have been detected in a highly variable H2O maser emission, with an active phase shorter than four weeks. A 70 AU chain of several maser spots, very well aligned, has been observed close to the B protosta…
The study of physical and chemical properties of massive protostars is critical to better understand the evolutionary sequence which leads to the formation of high-mass stars. IRAS 18151-1208 is a nearby massive region (d = 3kpc, L ~ 20000 Lsun) which splits into three cores: MM1, MM2 and MM3 (separated by 1'-2'). We aim at (1) studying the physical and chemical properties of the individual MM1, MM2 and MM3 cores; (2) deriving their evolutionary stages; (3) using these results to improve our view of the evolutionary sequence of massive cores. The region was observed in the CS, C34S, H2CO, HCO+…
We present IRAM 30m and JCMT observations of HDO lines towards the solar-type protostar IRAS 16293-2422. Five HDO transitions have been detected on-source, and two were unfruitfully searched for towards a bright spot of the outflow of IRAS 16293-2422. We interpret the data by means of the Ceccarelli, Hollenbach and Tielens (1996) model, and derive the HDO abundance in the warm inner and cold outer parts of the envelope. The emission is well explained by a jump model, with an inner abundance of 1e-7 and an outer abundance lower than 1e-9 (3 sigma). This result is in favor of HDO enhancement due…
The millimeter-wave rotational emission lines (4(04)-3(03) and 5(05)-4(04)) of protonated carbon dioxide, HCO2+(HOCO+), has been detected toward the low-mass class 0 protostar IRAS 04368+2557 in L1527 with the IRAM 30 m telescope. This is the first detection of HCO2+ except for the Galactic Center clouds. The column density of HCO2+ averaged over the beam size (29") is determined to be 7.6x10^10 cm^-2, assuming the rotational temperature of 12.3 K. The fractional abundance of gaseous CO2 relative to H2 is estimated from the column density of HCO2+ with an aid of a simplified chemical model. If…
The onset of gravitational collapse in cluster-forming clouds is still poorly known. Our goal is to use the Class 0 protostar IRAS 4A, which is undergoing collapse in the active molecular cloud NGC 1333, to set constraints on this process. In particular we want to measure the mass infall rate and investigate whether the collapse could have been triggered by a strong external perturbation. We analyze existing continuum observations to derive the density structure of the envelope, and use our new molecular line observations done with the IRAM 30m telescope to probe its velocity structure. We per…
Context. This is the third of a series of papers devoted to study in detail and with high-angular resolution intermediate-mass molecular outflows and their powering sources. Aims. The aim of this paper is to study the intermediate-mass YSO IRAS 20050+2720 and its molecular outflow, and put the results of this and the previous studied sources in the context of intermediate-mass star formation. Methods. We carried out VLA observations of the 7 mm continuum emission, and OVRO observations of the 2.7 mm continuum emission, CO(1-0), C18O(1-0), and HC3N(12-11) to map the core towards IRAS 20050+2720…
The Submillimeter Array has opened a new window to study the innermost warm and dense regions of the envelopes and disks around deeply embedded protostars. This paper presents high-angular resolution (< 2'') submillimeter observations of the class 0 young stellar object NGC1333-IRAS2A. Dust continuum emission and lines of complex organic molecules such as CH3OCH3 and CH3OCHO, high excitation CH3OH transitions, deuterated methanol CH3OD as well as lines of CO, HCN, H13CN, SO and SO2 are detected on < 200 AU scales. The observations are interpreted using detailed radiative transfer models of the…
Near-infrared observations towards the luminous IRAS source IRAS11101-5928 and the associated Herbig-Haro objects HH135/HH136 are presented. The observations reveal the presence of a well-collimated, parsec-sized H$_2$ outflow with a total H$_2$ luminosity of about $2L_\odot$. The bulk of the molecular gas is characterized by a ro-vibrational excitation temperature of $2000\pm200$ K. A small fraction (0.3%) of the molecular gas is very hot, with excitation temperatures around 5500 K. The molecular emission is associated with strong [FeII] emission. The H$_2$ and [FeII] emission characteristics…
We present detailed gas-phase chemical models for the envelope of the low-mass star-forming region IRAS 16293-2422. By considering both time- and space-dependent chemistry, these models are used to study both the physical structure proposed by Schoier et al. (2002), as well as the chemical evolution of this region. A new feature of our study is the use of a detailed, self-consistent radiative transfer model to translate the model abundances into line strengths and compare them directly with observations of a total of 76 transitions for 18 chemical species, and their isotopes. The model can rep…
We present observations of continuum and molecular lines towards the protostar candidates IRAS 21307+5049 and IRAS 22172+5549. Single-dish maps in the 12CO(2--1), C18O(2--1), HCO+(1--0) lines and sub-mm continuum are compared with interferometric maps in the 12CO(1--0) line and 3 mm continuum, and with mid- and near-infrared images. A plausible interpretation of our data based on the continuum maps and spectral energy distributions is that two components are present: a compact molecular core, responsible for the continuum emission at wavelengths longer than ~25 \mum, and a cluster of stars loc…
This paper presents a large spectral line and continuum survey of 8 deeply embedded, low-mass protostellar cores using the Submillimeter Array. Each source was observed in high excitation lines of some of the most common molecular species, CO, HCO+, CS, SO, H2CO, CH3OH and SiO. Line emission from 11 species originating from warm and dense gas have been imaged at high angular resolution (1-3"; typically 200-600 AU) together with continuum emission at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and 345 GHz (0.8 mm). Compact continuum emission is observed for all sources which likely originates in marginally optically thic…
We present a detailed kinematical study and modeling of the emission of the molecular cores at ambient velocities surrounding IRAS 21391+5802, an intermediate-mass protostar embedded in IC 1396N. The high-density gas emission is found in association with three dense cores associated with the YSOs BIMA 1, BIMA 2, and BIMA 3. The CS (5-4) and CH3OH (5-4) emission around BIMA 1 has been modeled by considering a spatially infinitely thin ring seen edge-on by the observer. From the model we find that CS is detected over a wider radii range than CH3OH. A bipolar outflow is detected in the CS (2-1) l…
Aims: To investigate the chemical relations between complex organics based on their spatial distributions and excitation conditions in the low-mass young stellar objects IRAS 16293-2422 A and B. Methods: Interferometric observations with the Submillimeter Array have been performed at 5''x3'' resolution revealing emission lines of HNCO, CH3CN, CH2CO, CH3CHO and C2H5OH. Rotational temperatures are determined from rotational diagrams when a sufficient number of lines are detected. Results: Compact emission is detected for all species studied here. For HNCO and CH3CN it mostly arises from source A…
We report interferometric observations of the high-mass star-forming object IRAS 23033+5951. Our observations reveal two massive molecular cloud cores, designated IRAS 23033+5951-MMS1 and IRAS 23033+5951-MMS2. MMS1 has already formed a massive protostar and MMS2 appears to be on the verge of doing so. The latter core may be an example of a massive analogue to a "Class 0" star-forming object. The more evolved core shows some evidence of N2H+ destruction near the protostar, consistent with similar findings in low-mass star-forming objects. In addition to the already-known prominent HCO+ outflow,…
New AAT near-infrared and SEST 12CO J=2-1 observations are combined with existing ISO mid-infrared and ATCA cm radio continuum observations to examine the protostellar content of the Bok globule BHR 71. Together with observations of Herbig-Haro objects, these data show: (1) Two protostellar sources, IRS1 and IRS2, with a separation of ~17 arcsec (3400 AU) are located within BHR 71. (2) Each protostar is driving its own molecular outflow. The outflow from IRS1 is much larger in extent, is more massive, and dominates the CO emission. (3) Both protostars are associated with Herbig-Haro objects an…
(Abridged) With the SMA we have made high angular-resolution (~1" = 160 AU) observations of the protobinary system IRAS 16293-2422 in the J = 4-3 lines of HCN and HC^15N, and in the continuum at 354.5 GHz. The HCN (4-3) line was also observed using the JCMT to supply missing short spacing information. Submillimeter continuum emission is detected from the individual binary components with a separation of ~5". The HC^15N (4-3) emission has revealed a compact (~500 AU) flattened structure (P.A. = -16 degree) associated with Source A, and shows a velocity gradient along the projected minor axis, w…
We investigate potential models that could explain why multiple proto-stellar systems predominantly show single jets. During their formation, stars most frequently produce energetic outflows and jets. However, binary jets have only been observed in a very small number of systems. We model numerically 3D binary jets for various outflow parameters. We also model the propagation of jets from a specific source, namely L1551 IRS 5, known to have two jets, using recent observations as constraints for simulations with a new MHD code. We examine their morphology and dynamics, and produce synthetic emi…
We present results of VLBI observations of the water masers associated with IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B in the NGC 1333 star-forming region taken in four epochs over a two month period. Both objects have been classified as extremely young sources and each source is known to be a multiple system. Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we detected 35 masers in Epoch I, 40 masers in Epoch II, 35 in Epoch III, and 24 in Epoch IV. Only one identified source in each system associates with these masers. These data are used to calculate proper motions for the masers and trace the jet outflows within 100 AU of IR…
Here we present the discovery of a triple radio continuum source associated with IRAS 16547-4247. The spectral indices of the three components are consistent with a jet powered by a massive O-type star in the process of formation, with the outer radio components being the shocked gas at the working surfaces of the jet. The detected radio continuum emission from the central object is thought to arise from the jet itself, prior to the formation of a detectable HII region. All three radio continuum components are located within a molecular core of mass 10^3 M_sun. Our discovery makes IRAS 16547-4…
Since most high- and intermediate-mass protostars are at great distance and form in clusters, high linear resolution observations are needed to investigate their physical properties. To study the gas in the innermost region around the protostars in the proto-cluster IRAS 05358+3543, we observed the source in several transitions of methanol and other molecular species with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the Submillimeter Array, reaching a linear resolution of 1100 AU. We determine the kinetic temperature of the gas around the protostars through an LVG and LTE analysis of their molecular…
The emission-lines in the active galaxy IRAS\,0421+0400 show a dramatic ($\sim$\,900\kms) increase in the velocity spread at the position of radio hot-spots which are located at the beginning of extended radio lobes. We study a simple geometric model of an opening outflow which reproduces the structure found in the long-slit emission-line spectrum of the hot-spot regions. The predicted bifurcations in the optical image structure of these regions is confirmed by deep \oiii\,line-imaging. We propose that this phenomenon is the result of a jet emerging from the galaxy through the boundary between…
We report detection of a Young Stellar Object with an evidence for an outflow in the form of knots in the molecular hydrogen emission line (2.121 micron) towards the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151. Near-infrared images reveal IRAS 06061+2151 to be a cluster of at least five sources, four of which seem to be early B type young stellar objects, in a region of 12 arcsec surrounded by a nebulosity. The presence of the knots that are probably similar to the HH objects in the optical wavelengths, suggests emerging jets from one of the cluster members. These jets appear to excite a pair …
We present high-resolution, multiwavelength continuum and molecular-line images of the massive star forming region IRAS 18317-0757. The IR through mm spectral energy distribution can be approximated by a two-temperature model (25 and 63 K) with a total luminosity of approximately log(L/Lsun)=5.2. Previous submm imaging resolved this region into a cluster of 5 dust cores, one of which is associated with the UCHII region G23.96+0.15, and another with an H2O maser. In our new 2.7 mm continuum image, only the UCHII region is detected, with total flux and morphology in good agreement with the free-…
The emission lines in the active galaxy IRAS 0421+0400 show a dramatic (~ 900 km/s) increase in the velocity spread at the position of radio hotspots which are located at the beginning of extended radio lobes. We study a model which explains this phenomenon as the result of a jet emerging through the boundary between the interstellar and intergalactic media. A similar scenario has previously been suggested as an explanation for wide angle tail radio sources (WATs). Based on our model, we simulate the longslit spectra of these regions and compare the results with the observations and find that …
We examine models in which jets are responsible for the formation of the emission-line spiral structure in IRAS 04210+0400. The kiloparsec-scale radio lobes in this active galaxy appear to be related to its extended emission-line spiral structure. The radio structure consists mainly of extended symmetrically bent, FR\,I-type lobes, which follow the emission-line spiral structure at their inner edge. In the central region of the galaxy a double radio source is observed with a separation of approximately 1\,arcsec between its components, which are extremely well aligned with the hotspot from whi…
We present the detection and characterization of a peculiar low-mass protostar (IRAS 22129+7000) located ~0.4 pc from Ced 201 Photodissociation Region (PDR) and ~0.2 pc from the HH450 jet. The cold circumstellar envelope surrounding the object has been mapped through its 1.2 mm dust continuum emission with IRAM-30m/MAMBO. The deeply embedded protostar is clearly detected with Spitzer/MIPS (70 um), IRS (20-35 um) and IRAC (4.5, 5.8, and 8 um) but also in the K_s band (2.15 um). Given the large "near- and mid-IR excess" in its spectral energy distribution, but large submillimeter-to-bolometric l…
We present new narrow-band near-infrared images together with K band spectra of highly collimated bipolar jets close to the IRAS 05487+0255 source. The jets are located at 50" West of the Herbig-Haro 110 outflow. The jets are not visible at optical wavelengths, and therefore, do not fall into the `standard' Herbig-Haro object classification scheme. Nevertheless, they belong to an ever growing group of molecular hydrogen jets associated with YSOs which are optically undetected. The jets are very well collimated, with a length-to-width ratio of 10-20. The spectra of the jet and counter-jet in th…
In the course of a comprehensive mm/submm survey of massive star-forming regions, the vicinities of a sample of 47 luminous IRAS sources were closely investigated with SCUBA and IRAM bolometers in order to search for massive protostellar candidates. A particularly interesting object has been found in the surroundings of the bright FIR source IRAS 07029-1215. Follow-up line observations show that the object is cold, that it has a massive envelope, and that it is associated with an energetic molecular outflow. No infrared point source has been detected at its position. Therefore, it is a very go…
Using the Very Large Array (VLA) in the A-configuration, we have obtained a high-resolution 3.6 cm map of a hard X-ray source detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in a protostellar clump in Orion molecular cloud 3. Two radio continuum sources were detected in the vicinity of the X-ray source, both of which have NIR counterparts. We conclude that these VLA sources are free-free emission produced by shocks in protostellar jets from the NIR class I protostars. Using the centimeter data, we determined the power and orientation of the protostellar jets. The center position of the X-ray emissio…
Recent observations of the deeply embedded L1551 IRS5 system permit the detailed examination of the properties of both the stellar binary and the binary jet. For the individual components of the stellar binary, we determine their masses, mass accretion rates, effective temperatures and luminosities. For the atomic wind/jet flow, we determine the mass loss rate, yielding observationally determined values of the ratio of the mass loss to the mass accretion rate, f. For the X-ray emitting region in the northern jet, we have obtained the jet-velocity and derive the extinction and the densities on …
ASCA observation of a region containing a Class 0 protostar, IRAS 20386+6751 in the L1157 dark cloud, has been carried out. The protostar was not detected, and the 95% upper limit to the luminosity depends on assumed Nh : Lx(0.5-10 keV) < 1.1e31 erg/s for Nh = 1e23 cm^-2. A Class I protostar in L1152, IRAS 20353+6742, in the same field was also undetected with the upper limit about three times as much as the L1157 level. Besides these non detections, nine new X-ray sources were detected and spectral analysis was performed for 4 sources. One object (AXJ 2038+6801) shows a hard spectrum with a t…
