We present molecular line observations of the massive star forming region IRAS 17233-3606 aimed at studying the molecular core associated with the source. The observations were made using the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope in the CO (3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, and in the CH_3OH (6_K-5_K), (7_K-6_K) and CH_3CN (16_K-15_K) bands. For the CO(3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, we obtained maps with a size of 70''\times 70''. The typical angular resolution of the data is ~18''. Our observations reveal an exceptionally rich molecular spectrum, a signpost of hot core activity. Comparisons with two other prominent southern hot cores were made through observations in the same frequency setups. We also detected a bipolar outflow in CO (3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) lines. Modelling reveals a hot core of size ~3'' and a temperature of 150 K in the IRAS17233-3606 region. The parameters of the molecular outflow are derived through the analysis of the CO (3-2) emission, and are typical of outflows driven by high-mass young stellar objects.
The physical conditions of the interstellar medium and stellar components in the regions of the southern Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 10049-5657 and IRAS 10031-5632 have been investigated. These regions have been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands lambda_eff ~ 150 & 210 micron, with ~ 1' angular resolution using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope. Spatial distribution of the temperature of cool dust and optical depth at 200 micron have been obtained. Using the 2MASS sources, the stellar populations of the embedded young clusters have been studied. A rich …
The Galactic star forming region in the southern sky, associated with IRAS 09002-4732 has been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands (148 & 209 um), with ~ 1' angular resolution. Fifteen sources including IRAS 08583-4719, 08589-4714, 09002-4732 and 09014-4736 have been detected, some of which are well resolved. Taking advantage of similar beams in the two bands, a reliable dust temperature [T(148/209)] map has been obtained, which detects colder dust (< 30 K) in this region. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 um have also been used for comparison. The optical depth map…
We report on a spectro-polarimetric analysis of four southern Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), aimed at constraining the presence of hidden broad AGN lines. For IRAS 19254--7245 ({\sl The Superantennae}) we find evidence for a significant level of polarized light in the H$α$ line with FWHM$>$2300 km/s. Some degree of polarization is also detected in IRAS 20551-4250, though with lower significance. In the two other sources (IRAS 20100--4156 and IRAS 22491--1808) no polarized signals are detected. Although it is unclear from the present data if the origin of polarization is due to refl…
We present the first radio observations of a sample of 13 optically and IR bright southern hemisphere classical Be stars made from the Australian Telescope Compact Array at 3.5cm and 6.3cm simultaneously. One star, delta Cen was detected at 3.5cm and a second, mu Cen was also thought to have been detected; further observations of this source are required to confirm this detection. No sources were detected at 6.3cm, although delta Cen was previously detected at this wavelength by other observers at a higher flux than our detection limit. The radio observations show that the spectral energy dist…
An analysis of the IRAS 1.2 Jy redshift catalogue with emphasis on the separate examination of northern and southern parts (in galactic coordinates) is performed using a complete set of morphological descriptors (Minkowski functionals), nearest neighbour distributions and the variance of the galaxy counts. We find large fluctuations in the clustering properties as seen in a large difference between the northern and southern parts of the catalogue on scales of 100Mpc/h. These fluctuations remain discernible even on the scale of 200Mpc/h. We also identify sparse sampling as a major source of ``a…
We report the cumulative results of five surveys for water maser emission at 1.35 cm wavelength in 131 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies, conducted at the Parkes Observatory between 1993 and 1998. We detected one new maser, in the edge-on galaxy IRASF01063-8034, which exhibits a single, about 0.1 Jy spectral feature at 4282+/-6 km/s (heliocentric) with an unusually large 54+/-16 km/s half-power full width. The centroid velocity of the emission increased to 4319.6+/-0.6 km/s (38+/-2 km/s width) over the 13 days between discovery and confirmation of the detection. A similar…
This paper studies systematically, for the first time, the circumgalactic environment of bright IRAS galaxies as defined by Soifer et al. (1989). While the role of gravitational interaction for luminous and ultraluminous IRAS galaxies has been well established by various studies, the situation is by far more obscure in the IR luminosity range of the bright IRAS sample, 10^{10}Lsol < Lfir < 10^{11} Lsol. To easily identify nearby companion galaxies, the bright IRAS sample was restricted to 87 objects with redshift range 0.008 < z < 0.018 and galactic latitude > 30^{o}. A control sample, selecte…
We used near-infrared 2MASS data to construct visual extinction maps of a sample of Southern Bok globules utilizing the NICE method. We derived radial extinction profiles of dense cores identified in the globules and analyzed their stability against gravitational collapse with isothermal Bonnor-Ebert spheres. The frequency distribution of the stability parameter xi_max of these cores shows that a large number of them are located in stable states, followed by an abrupt decrease of cores in unstable states. This decrease is steeper for globules with associated IRAS point sources than for starles…
Aims: We have carried out an infrared study of the southern Galactic massive star forming region associated with IRAS 14416-5937. Methods: This star forming region has been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands at ~ 150 & 210 micron using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope with ~ 1' angular resolution. We have used 2MASS JHK$_s$ as well as Spitzer-GLIMPSE data of this region to study the stellar populations of the embedded young cluster. This region comprises of two sources, designated as A & B and separated by ~ 2 pc. The spectrum of a region located close to the source A obtained…
We report the results of a search for 22 GHz water maser emission in IRAS-bright galaxies, using the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. In particular, we present the details of four new maser detections (IC342, NGC2146, NGC3556, and Arp299) and follow-up interferometric studies. A comparison between water maser detection rates derived in the present study and those in previous similar surveys is also presented.
We present high-resolution (30"-1') 12, 25, 60, and 100 micron images of 106 interacting galaxy systems contained in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS, Sanders et al. 2003), a complete sample of all galaxies having a 60 micron flux density greater than 5.24 Jy. These systems were selected to have at least two distinguishable galaxies separated by less than three average galactic diameters, and thus we have excluded very widely separated systems and very advanced mergers. The new complete survey has the same properties as the prototype survey of Surace et al. 1993. We find no increase…
We report the first results of an ongoing survey at 22 GHz with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to search for water maser emission in bright IRAS sources. We have detected water vapor emission in IC 342. The maser, associated with a star forming region ~10-15 arcsec west of the nucleus, consists of a single 0.5 km/s wide feature and reaches an isotropic luminosity of 0.01 L(sun) (D = 1.8 Mpc). Our detection raises the detection rate among northern galaxies with IRAS point source fluxes S(100micron) > 50 Jy to 16%.
An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been employed using a supervised back-propagation scheme to classify 2000 bright sources from the Calgary database of IRAS (Infrared Astronomy Satellite) spectra in the wavelength region of 8-23 microns. The data base has been classified into 17 pre-determined classes based on spectral morphology. We have been able to classify more than 80 percent of the 2000 sources correctly at the first instance. The speed and robustness of the scheme will allow us to classify the whole of LRS database, containing more than 50,000 sources in the future.
IRAS flux densities, redshifts, and infrared luminosities are reported for all sources identified in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS), a complete flux-limited survey of all extragalactic objects with total 60 micron flux density greater than 5.24 Jy, covering the entire sky surveyed by IRAS at Galactic latitude |b| > 5 degrees. The RBGS includes 629 objects, with a median (mean) sample redshift of 0.0082 (0.0126) and a maximum redshift of 0.0876. The RBGS supersedes the previous two-part IRAS Bright Galaxy Samples, which were compiled before the final ("Pass 3") calibration of the …
We report on observations performed at 1.25 $mm$ of a southern galaxy sample, selected from the IRAS PSC and complete to $S_{60}=2 Jy$. We detected 18 sources and set significant limits on 10 further objects. We use these data to discuss the spatial distribution of cold dust, the broad-band far-IR/mm spectra, the overall amount of dust, the gas-to-dust mass ratio, the dust optical depth, and the overall extinction, for such a representative galaxy sample. These results are also supported by a successful comparison with values inferred for the Galaxy. Because of the favourable observational set…
We have studied the FIR/{\it mm} spectrum of IR galaxies by combining IRAS photometry with new {\it mm} data on a complete southern IRAS galaxy sample. The observed spectra and a dust model emphasize a dicothomy in the galaxy population: half of the objects with a lot of warm dust are characterized by higher values of the bolometric (UV-FIR) luminosity, of the dust-to-gas mass ratio, of the dust optical depths and extinction, while those dominated by cold ({\it cirrus}) dust show opposite trends. From these data we derive the {\it mm} luminosity function of galaxies and estimate their contribu…
ISO-SWS spectral observations of the supernova remnant IC443 are presented. Like other radiative SNRs, this object is characterized by prominent line-emitting filaments and relatively strong IRAS 12 and 25 micron emission which is commonly interpreted as thermal radiation from very small grains stochastically heated by collisions with the hot plasma behind the shock front. This interpretation is challenged by the data presented in this Letter which indicate that most of the 12 and 25 micron IRAS flux is accounted for by ionized line emission (mainly [NeII] and [FeII]). This result also seems t…
We present molecular line and submillimeter dust continuum observations of the Lynds 870 cloud in the vicinity of IRAS 20231+3440. Two submillimeter cores, SMM1 and SMM2, are identified mapping the 870 micron dust continuum and ammonia emission. The total molecular mass is ~70-110 solar mass. The northern core is warmer and denser than the southern one. Molecular outflows are discovered in both cores. In the northern one a significant amount of low velocity (1.3-2.8 km/s) outflowing gas is found, that is hidden in the relatively broad CO lines but that is revealed by the narrower HCO+ spectra.…
This is the second in a series of papers presenting results from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey. In our first paper we provided 850 micron flux densities for 104 galaxies selected from the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample and we found that the 60, 100 micron (IRAS) and 850 micron (SCUBA) fluxes could be adequately fitted by emission from dust at a single temperature. In this paper we present 450 micron data for the galaxies. With the new data, the spectral energy distributions of the galaxies can no longer be fitted with an isothermal dust model - two temperature components are now required. …
A systematic study of a large sample of sources, covering a wide range in galactocentric distances, masses and luminosities, is a fast and efficient way of obtaining a good overview of the different stages of high-mass star formation. With these goals in mind, we have started a survey of 40 color selected IRAS sources south of -20 degrees declination with the APEX telescope on Chajnantor, Chile. Our first APEX results already demonstrate that the selection criteria were successful, since some of the sources are very rich in molecular lines.
We present observations in the optical, near-infrared and millimetre bands of the Ultraluminous Infrared galaxy IRAS 19254-7245, also known as "The Superantennae". This galaxy is an interacting system with a double nucleus and long tails extending for about 350 kpc. We studied in detail the southern component of the system which is optically classified as a Sy2 galaxy. We have developed a method to determine the parameters of the emission lines in a spectrum in the case of multiple components and severe blending. Our data allow us to build a picture of the environment around the nucleus of the…
Surface brightness maps at 12 microns, derived from observations with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), are used to estimate the integrated flux at this wavelength from the Galactic bulge as a function of galactic latitude along the minor axis. A simple model was used to remove Galactic disk emission (e.g. unresolved stars and dust) from the IRAS measurements. The resulting estimates are compared with predictions for the 12 micron bulge surface brightness based on observations of complete samples of optically identified M giants in several minor axis bulge fields. No evidence is foun…
We report that a Jupiter-mass planet, WASP-7b, transits the V = 9.5 star HD197286 every 4.95 d. This is the brightest discovery from the WASP-South transit survey and the brightest transiting-exoplanet system in the Southern hemisphere. WASP-7b is among the densest of the known Jupiter-mass planets, suggesting that it has a massive core. The planet mass is 0.96 M_Jup, the radius 0.915 R_Jup, and the density 1.26 rho_Jup.
We present Sloan Digital Sky Survey and United States Naval Observatory observations of the V1647 Ori protostar and surrounding field near NGC 2068. V1647 Ori, the likely driving source for HH 23, brightened significantly in November 2003. Analysis of SDSS imaging acquired in November 1998 and February 2002 during the quiescent state, recent USNO photometry, and published 2MASS and Gemini data shows that the color changes associated with brightening suggest an EXor outburst rather than a simple dust clearing event.
In this paper we present the fourth part of the photometric data from the 9x9 deg ASAS camera monitoring the whole southern hemisphere in V-band. Preliminary list (based on observations obtained since January 2001) of variable stars located between RA 18^h - 24^h is released. 10311 stars brighter than V=14 were found to be variable (1641 eclipsing, 1116 regularly pulsating, 938 Mira and 6616 other stars). Light curves have been classified using the automated algorithm taking into account periods, amplitudes, fourier coefficients of the light curves, 2MASS colors and IRAS infrared fluxes. Basic…
We present a 3-dimensional study of the local (< 100 kpc) environment of Sy1, Sy2 and Bright IRAS Galaxies. For this purpose we use three galaxy samples (Sy1, Sy2, BIRG) located at high galactic latitudes as well as three control sample of non-active galaxies having the same morphological, redshift and diameter size distributions as the corresponding Seyfert or BIRG sample. Using the CfA2 and SSRS galaxy catalogues as well as our own spectroscopic observations, we find that the fraction of BIRGs with a close neighbor is significantly higher than that of their control sample. We also find that …
This paper describes the third part of the photometric data from the 9 x 9 deg ASAS camera monitoring the whole southern hemisphere in V-band. Preliminary list of variable stars based on observations obtained since January 2001 is presented. Over 3,200,000 stars brighter than V=15 on 18,000 frames were analyzed and 10453 were found to be variable (1718 eclipsing, 731 regularly pulsating, 849 Mira and 7155 other stars). Light curves have been classified using the improved automated algorithm, which now takes into account 2MASS colors and IRAS infrared fluxes. Basic photometric properties are pr…
We exploit observations at 1.25 mm with the ESO-SEST telescope of a southern galaxy sample, selected from the IRAS PSC and complete to $S_{60}=2 Jy$, to derive the FIR and mm luminosity functions and the conditional probability distributions of FIR and mm luminosity of galaxies. The reliability of these estimates is ensured by the good observed correlation of the far-infrared and mm emissions. This detailed knowledge of the millimetric properties of galaxies is used to simulate the extragalactic sub-mm sky (background intensity, small-scale anisotropy signals, and discrete source statistics) -…
IRAS 06562-0337 has been the recent subject of a classic debate: proto-planetary nebula or young stellar object? We present the first 2 micron image of IRAS 06562-0337, which reveals an extended diffuse nebula containing approximately 70 stars inside a 30 arcsec radius around a bright, possibly resolved, central object. The derived stellar luminosity function is consistent with that expected from a single coeval population, and the brightness of the nebulosity is consistent with the predicted flux of unresolved low-mass stars. The stars and nebulosity are spatially coincident with strong CO li…
As a prerequisite for cosmological studies using adaptive optics techniques, we have begun to identify and characterize faint sources in the vicinity of bright stars at high Galactic latitudes. The initial phase of this work has been a program of K_s imaging conducted with SOFI at the ESO NTT. From observations of 42 southern fields evenly divided between the spring and autumn skies, we have identified 391 additional stars and 1589 galaxies lying at separations 60" from candidate guide stars in the magnitude range 9.0 R 12.4. When analyzed as a "discrete deep field" with 131 arcmin^2 area, our…
We present a 3-dimensional study of the local ($\leq 100 h^{-1}$ kpc) and the large scale ($\leq$ 1 $h^{-1}$ Mpc) environment of Bright IRAS Galaxies (BIRGs). For this purpose we use 87 BIRGs located at high galactic latitudes (with 0.008$\leq z \leq$0.018) as well as a control sample of non-active galaxies having the same morphological, redshift and diameter size distributions as the corresponding BIRG sample. Using the Center for Astrophysics (CfA2) and Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS) galaxy catalogues ($m_b\lesssim 15.5$)as well as our own spectroscopic observations ($m_b\lesssim19.0$) …
We aim at studying the cluster environment surrounding the UCHII region in IRAS 20293+3952, a region in the first stages of formation of a cluster around a high-mass star. BIMA and VLA were used to observe the 3 mm continuum, N2H+(1-0), NH3(1,1) and (2,2), and CH3OH(2-1) emission of the surroundings of the UCHII region. We studied the kinematics of the region and computed the rotational temperature and column density maps by fitting the hyperfine structure of N2H+ and NH3. The dense gas traced by N2H+ and NH3 shows two different clouds, a main cloud to the east of the UCHII region, of 0.5 pc a…
Aims. Near diffraction-limited images have been taken at 8.9, 11.9, and 12.9 micron for the brightest extragalactic sources in the southern sky, in order to optimally plan N-band observations with MIDI (MID-infrared Interferometric instrument) at the VLTI. Methods. We have assembled a sample of 21 objects consisting of all the AGNs observable from Paranal observatory, Chile, plus three non-AGN objects, with an estimated N-band flux greater than 400mJy. We used the TIMMI2 Mid Infrared instrument mounted on the ESO's 3.6m telescope to obtain near diffraction-limited images in order to establish …
We address the problem of modeling the far-infrared (FIR) spectrum and deriving the star-formation rate (SFR) and the dust mass of spiral galaxies. We use the realistic physical model of Popescu et al. (2000) to describe the overall ultra-violet (UV), optical and FIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of a spiral galaxy. The model has only three free parameters: SFR, dust mass, and the fraction of the UV radiation which is absorbed locally by dense dust in the HII regions. Using this model, we are able to fit well the FIR spectra of 62 bright, IRAS galaxies from the "SCUBA Local Universe Galax…
A blind survey for HI bright galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance, (212 deg < l < 36 deg; |b| < 5 deg), has been made with the 21 cm multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64 m radiotelescope. The survey, sensitive to normal spiral galaxies to a distance of about 40 Mpc and more nearby dwarfs, detected 110 galaxies. Of these, 67 have no counterparts in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database. In general, the uncataloged galaxies lie behind thicker obscuration than do the cataloged objects. All of the newly-discovered galaxies have HI flux integrals more than an order of magnitude lower than the C…
We present a survey of molecular gas in the J = 1 -> 0 transition of 12CO towards the IRAS Vela shell. The shell, previously identified from IRAS maps, is a ring-like structure seen in the region of the Gum Nebula. We confirm the presence of molecular gas associated with some of the infrared point sources seen along the Shell. We have studied the morphology and kinematics of the gas and conclude that the shell is expanding at the rate of ~ 13 km/s from a common center. We go on to include in this study the Southern Dark Clouds seen in the region. The distribution and motion of these objects fi…
This paper describes the second part of the photometric data from the 9x9 deg ASAS camera monitoring the whole southern hemisphere in the V-band. Preliminary list of variable stars based on observations obtained since January 2001 is presented. Over 2,800,000 stars brighter than V=15 mag on 18,000 frames were analyzed and 11357 were found to be variable (2685 eclipsing, 907 regularly pulsating, 521 Mira and 7244 other, mostly SR, IRR and LPV stars). Periodic light curves have been classified using the automated algorithm, which now takes into account IRAS infrared fluxes. Basic photometric pro…
We have observed the massive star forming region, IRAS 18507+0121, at millimeter wavelengths in 3 mm continuum emission and H13CO+(J=1-0) and SiO(v=0, J=2-1) line emission, and at near-infrared wavelengths between 1.2 and 2.1 microns. Two compact molecular cores are detected: one north and one south separated by about 40". The northern molecular core contains a newly discovered, deeply embedded, B2 protostar surrounded by several hundred solar masses of warm gas and dust, G34.4+0.23 MM. Based on the presence of warm dust emission and the lack of detection at near-infrared wavelengths, we sugge…
We present 1.25 mm continuum data for a southern galaxy sample selected from the IRAS PSC and complete to S_60=2 Jy. Two thirds of the galaxies have been detected and significant limits on the remaining objects have been set. We find, on a statistical basis, indications that the dust emission in these galaxies is somewhat more centrally concentrated than that of the optical light, possibly tracing a higher metal content in the inner galactic regions. This result also allows to estimate the aperture corrections to the millimetric data. The latter, together with IRAS photometric data, have been …
(Abridged) We have observed CS and C17O lines, and 1.2 mm cont. emission towards a sample of 130 high-mass protostellar candidates with DEC<-30 deg. This is the first step of the southern extension of a project started more than a decade ago aimed at the identification of massive protostellar candidates. We selected from the IRAS PSC 429 sources which potentially are compact molecular clouds. The sample is divided into two groups: the 298 sources with [25-12]>0.57 and [60-12]>1.30 we call 'High' sources, the remaining 131 we call 'Low' sources. In this paper, we check the association with dens…
The morphology of the IR emission and the properties of discrete FIR sources in M31 disk are studied using the HiRes maps from IRAS. Very thin and bright FIR arm segments are shown in these maps, which have similar structure as the HI gas but with much enhanced arm/inter-arm contrast, typically a factor of 5 on the 60$μ$m image. We identify 39 unconfused sources (excluding the nucleus) and 14 confused sources (7 pairs) at 60 $μ$m by direct Gaussian fittings to the image. IRAS colors of 10 bright isolated sources are studied, which are presumably representative of the discrete sources in genera…
We have mapped the proto-binary source IRAS 16293-2422 in CO 2-1, 13CO 2-1, and CO 3-2 with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The maps with resolution of 1".5-5" reveal a single small scale (~3000 AU) bipolar molecular outflow along the east-west direction. We found that the blueshifted emission of this small scale outflow mainly extends to the east and the redshifted emission to the west from the position of IRAS 16293A. A comparison with the morphology of the large scale outflows previously observed by single-dish telescopes at millimeter wavelengths suggests that the small scale outflow may be…
This paper summarizes a three night observing campaign aimed at achieving milli-magnitude precision photometry of bright stars (V < 9.0) with the 1-meter Swope telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The test targets were the main sequence stars HD205739 and HD135446. The results show that, by placing a concentric diaphragm in front of the aperture of the telescope, it is possible to avoid saturation and to achieve a photometric precision of 0.0008-0.0010 mag per data point with a cadence of less than 4 minutes. It is also possible to reach an overall precision of less that 0.0015 mags for time…
We present the results of a near-infrared monitoring programme of a selected sample of stars, initially suspected to be Mira variables and OH/IR stars, covering more than a decade of observations. The objects monitored cover the typical range of IRAS colours shown by O-rich stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch and show a surprisingly large diversity of variability properties. 16 objects are confirmed as large-amplitude variables. Periods between 360 and 1800 days and typical amplitudes from 1 to 2 magnitudes could be determined for nine of them. In three light curves we find a systematic decre…
We examine models in which jets are responsible for the formation of the emission-line spiral structure in IRAS 04210+0400. The kiloparsec-scale radio lobes in this active galaxy appear to be related to its extended emission-line spiral structure. The radio structure consists mainly of extended symmetrically bent, FR\,I-type lobes, which follow the emission-line spiral structure at their inner edge. In the central region of the galaxy a double radio source is observed with a separation of approximately 1\,arcsec between its components, which are extremely well aligned with the hotspot from whi…
We report the discovery of twenty-one hitherto unknown bright southern ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the range M7 to L5.5, together with new observations of a further three late M dwarfs previously confirmed. Three more objects are already identified in the literature as high proper motion stars;we derive their spectral types for the first time. All objects were selected from the 2MASS All Sky and SuperCOSMOS point source databases on the basis of their optical/near-infrared colours, $J$-band magnitudes and proper motions. Low resolution (R $\sim$ 1000) $JH$ spectroscopy with the ESO…
We report a radio detection of supernova SN 2004ip in the circumnuclear region of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413, using Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 8.4 GHz on 11 June 2007. SN 2004ip had been previously discovered at near-infrared wavelengths using adaptive optics observations, but its nature (core-collapse or thermonuclear) could not be definitely established. Our radio detection, about three years after the explosion of the supernova, indicates a prominent interaction of the ejecta of SN 2004ip with the circumstellar medium, confirming that the supernova was a core-c…
We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38 micron region of the ten Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) found in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. Among the BGS ULIRGs, we find a factor of 50 spread in the rest-frame mid to far-infrared spectral slope. The 9.7 micron silicate optical depths range from less than 0.4 more than 4.2, implying line of sight extinctions of A(V) ~ 8 - 78 mag. There is evidence for water ice and hydrocarbon absorption and C2H2 and HCN absorption features in four and possibly six of the 10 BGS ULIRGs, indicating shielded mole…
We present a multiwavelength study of the ultra compact HII region associated with IRAS 20178+4046. This enables us to probe the different components associated with this massive star forming region. The radio emission from the ionized gas was mapped at 610 and 1280 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), India. We have used 2MASS $J H K_{s}$ data to study the nature of the embedded sources associated with IRAS 20178+4046. Submillimetre emission from the cold dust at 450 and 850 $μ$m was studied using JCMT-SCUBA. The high-resolution radio continuum maps at 610 and 1280 MHz displa…
We have resolved the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG), IRAS 09111-1007, with the new 350 micron-optimised Second Generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II) and present the first submillimetre fluxes and images for the system. IRAS 09111-1007 comprises two interacting luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with a projected nuclear separation of 39 kpc. The Western galaxy is roughly four times more luminous in the submillimetre than its Eastern counterpart. It is an extremely bright LIRG with an AGN. The classification of the Eastern source is uncertain: it could be a Se…
We present an image of the redshift 2.3 IRAS source FSC10214+4724 at 0.8 microns obtained with the HST WFPC2 Planetary Camera. The source appears as an unresolved (< 0.06") arc 0.7" long, with significant substructure along its length. The arc is centered near an elliptical galaxy 1.18" to the north. An unresolved component 100 times fainter than the arc is clearly detected on the opposite side of this galaxy. The most straightforward interpretation is that FSC 10214+4724 is gravitationally lensed by the foreground elliptical galaxy, with the faint component a counterimage of the IRAS source. …
We present the results of N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the silicate carbon star IRAS08002-3803 with the MID-infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The observations were carried out using two unit telescopes (UT2 and UT3) with projected baseline lengths ranging from 39 to 47 m. Our observations of IRAS08002-3803 have spatially resolved the dusty environment of a silicate carbon star for the first time and revealed an unexpected wavelength dependence of the angular size in the N ba…
IRAS observations show the existence of a correlation between the infrared luminosity Lir and dust temperature Td in star-forming galaxies, in which larger Lir leads to higher dust temperature. The Lir-Td relation is commonly seen as reflecting the increase in dust temperature in galaxies with higher star formation rate. Even though the correlation shows a significant amount of dispersion, a unique relation has been commonly used to construct spectral energy distributions of galaxies in distant universe studies, such as source number counting or photometric redshift determination. In this work…
High angular resolution far-infrared observations at 143 & 185 \micron, using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope, are presented for two Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 00494+5617 and 05327-0457. The latter map also reveals the cold dust in OMC-3. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 micron have also been presented for comparison. Both these regions are illuminated at the edges by high mass stars with substantial UV flux. The present study is aimed at quantifying the role of the nearby stars vis-a-vis embedded young stellar objects in the overall heating of th…
We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that …
We present near-infrared J (1.25um), H (1.65um), and Ks (2.17um) imaging of the entire supernova remnant IC 443 from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) LWS observations of [O I]. Near-infrared emission from IC 443 was detected in all three bands from most of the optically bright parts of the remnant, revealing a shell-like morphology, with bright Ks band emission along the southern ridge and bright J and H along the northeastern rim. The color and morphological structure are very different between the northeastern and southern parts. J and H band emissi…
Millimeter wavelength observations are presented of NGC 1333 IRAS 4, a group of highly-embedded young stellar objects in Perseus, that reveal motions of infall, outflow, rotation, and turbulence in the dense gas around its two brightest continuum objects, 4A and 4B. These data have finest angular resolution of approximately 2" (0.0034 pc) and finest velocity resolution of 0.13 km/s. Infall motions are seen from inverse P-Cygni profiles observed in H2CO 3_12-2_11 toward both objects, but also in CS 3-2 and N2H+ 1-0 toward 4A, providing the least ambiguous evidence for such motions toward low-ma…
We present interferometric observations of three ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; UGC 5101, Mrk 273, and IRAS 17208-0014) in the 3-mm wavelength range, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. Both the HCN (J=1-0) and HCO+ (J=1-0) molecular lines were observed simultaneously. HCN emission was clearly detected at the nuclear positions of these ULIRGs, and HCO+ emission was detected at the nuclear positions of UGC 5101 and IRAS 17208-0014. The HCN to HCO+ brightness-temperature ratios toward the nuclei of the three ULIRGs were derived and compared with those of lower luminosity galaxies know…
Images of IRAS galaxies with a range of IR properties are examined for bright knots, both within and outside the galaxy. These are found almost exclusively in galaxies with steep IR spectra, but over a wide range of IR luminosity, and usually without strong nuclear activity. In most cases, the knots are likely to be star-formation induced by tidal interactions, and are seen in the early stages of such interactions. Detailed photometry is presented of knots in six representative galaxies. The knots appear to have a wide range of colour and luminosity, but it is argued that many are heavily redd…
This is the second paper of a series describing the Asiago-ESO/RASS QSO survey, a project aimed at the construction of an all-sky statistically well-defined sample of very bright QSOs (B_J < 15). Such a survey is required to remove the present uncertainties about the properties of the local QSO population and constitutes an homogeneous database for detailed evolutionary studies of AGN. We present here the complete Southern Sample, which comprises 243 bright (12.60 < B_J < 15.13) QSO candidates at high galactic latitudes (|b_{gal}| > 30^{\circ}). The area covered by the survey is 5660 sq. deg. …
