In this paper, the response of single three-dimensional phantom and self-avoiding polymers to localized step strains are studied for two cases in the absence of hydrodynamic interactions: (i) polymers tethered at one end with the strain created at the point of tether, and (ii) free polymers with the strain created in the middle of the polymer. The polymers are assumed to be in their equilibrium state before the step strain is created. It is shown that the strain relaxes as a power-law in time $t$ as $t^{-η}$. While the strain relaxes as $1/t$ for the phantom polymer in both cases; the self-avoiding polymer relaxes its strain differently in case (i) than in case (ii): as $t^{-(1+ν)/(1+2ν)}$ and as $t^{-2/(1+2ν)}$ respectively. Here $ν$ is the Flory exponent for the polymer, with value $\approx0.588$ in three dimensions. Using the mode expansion method, exact derivations are provided for the $1/t$ strain relaxation behavior for the phantom polymer. However, since the mode expansion method for self-avoiding polymers is nonlinear, similar theoretical derivations for the self-avoiding polymer proves difficult to provide. Only simulation data are therefore presented in support of the $t^{-(1+ν)/(1+2ν)}$ and the $t^{-2/(1+2ν)}$ behavior. The relevance of these exponents for the anomalous dynamics of polymers are also discussed.
Simulations are used to examine the microscopic origins of strain hardening in polymer glasses. While traditional entropic network models can be fit to the total stress, their underlying assumptions are inconsistent with simulation results. There is a substantial energetic contribution to the stress that rises rapidly as segments between entanglements are pulled taut. The thermal component of stress is less sensitive to entanglements, mostly irreversible, and directly related to the rate of local plastic arrangements. Entangled and unentangled chains show the same strain hardening when plotted…
Constitutive equations are derived for the viscoelastic response of rubbery polymers at finite strains. A polymer is thought of as a network of long chains connected to temporary junctions. At a random time, a chain detaches from a junction, which is treated at transition from its active state to the dangling state. A dangling chain randomly captures a new junction in the vicinity of its free end and returns to its active state. Breakage and reformation of long chains are modeled as thermo-mechanically activated processes. Stress-strain relations for a rubbery polymer are developed using the l…
The effects of entanglement and chain orientation on strain hardening in glassy polymers are separated by examining mixtures of chains with different lengths. Simulations show that the orientation of a molecule of a given chain length is the same in monodisperse systems and bidisperse mixtures, even when entangled and unentangled chains are mixed. In addition, the stress in mixtures is equal to the weighted average of the stresses in monodisperse systems. These results indicate that chains contribute independently to strain hardening, that chain orientation is determined by local interactions …
In a recent letter, Govaert et al. examined the relationship between strain hardening modulus $G_r$ and flow stress $σ_{flow}$ for five different glassy polymers. In each case, results for $G_r$ at different strain rates or different temperatures were linearly related to the flow stress. They suggested that this linear relation was inconsistent with simulations. Data from previous publications and new results are presented to show that simulations also yield a linear relation between modulus and flow stress. Possible explanations for the change in the ratio of modulus to flow stress with tempe…
Simulations are used to examine the microscopic origins of strain hardening in polymer glasses. While stress-strain curves for a wide range of temperature can be fit to the functional form predicted by entropic network models, many other results are fundamentally inconsistent with the physical picture underlying these models. Stresses are too large to be entropic and have the wrong trend with temperature. The most dramatic hardening at large strains reflects increases in energy as chains are pulled taut between entanglements rather than a change in entropy. A weak entropic stress is only obser…
We image semi-flexible polymer networks under shear at the micrometer scale. By tracking embedded probe particles, we determine the local strain field, and directly measure its uniformity, or degree of affineness, on scales of 2-100 micron. The degree of nonaffine strain depends on polymer length and crosslink density, consistent with theoretical predictions. We also find a direct correspondence between the uniformity of the microscale strain and the nonlinear elasticity of the networks in the bulk.
We present a theoretical framework for the linear and nonlinear visco-elastic properties of reversibly crosslinked networks of semiflexible polymers. In contrast to affine models where network strain couples to the polymer end-to-end distance, in our model strain rather serves to locally distort the network structure. This induces bending modes in the polymer filaments, the properties of wich are slaved to the surrounding network structure. Specifically, we investigate the frequency-dependent linear rheology, in particular in combination with crosslink binding/unbinding processes. We also deve…
The present contribution focuses on the thermodynamically consistent mechanical modeling of the strain-induced crystallization in unfilled polymers. This phenomenon is of particular importance for the mechanical properties of polymers as well as for their manufacturing and the application. The model developed uses the principle of the minimum of dissipation potential and assumes two internal variables: the deformations due to crystallization and the regularity of the network. In addition to the dissipation potential necessary for the derivation of evolution equations, the well-established Arru…
Oriented block copolymers exhibit a buckling instability when submitted to a tensile test perpendicular to the lamellae direction. In this paper we study this behavior using a coarse grained molecular dynamics simulation approach. Coarse grained models of lamellar copolymers with alternate glassy rubbery layers are generated using the Radical Like Polymerization method, and their mechanical response is studied. For large enough systems, uniaxial tensile tests perpendicular to the direction of the lamellae reveal the occurrence of the buckling instability at low strain. The results that emerge …
The dynamics of structural relaxation in a model polymer glass subject to spatially-homogeneous, time-periodic shear deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a coarse-grained bead-spring model of short polymer chains below the glass transition temperature. It is found that at small strain amplitudes, the segmental dynamics is nearly reversible over about $10^4$ cycles, while at strain amplitudes above a few percent, polymer chains become fully relaxed after a hundred cycles. At the critical strain amplitude, the transition from slow to fast relaxation dynamics…
Super-compressible foam-like carbon nanotube films have been reported to exhibit highly nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour in compression similar to soft tissue. Their unique combination of light weight and exceptional electrical, thermal and mechanical properties have helped identify them as viable building blocks for more complex nanosystems and as stand-alone structures for a variety of different applications. In the as-grown state, their mechanical performance is limited by the weak adhesion between the tubes, controlled by the van der Waals forces, and the substrate allowing the forests to …
We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the microscopic and macroscopic response of model polymer networks to uniaxial elongations. By studying networks with strands lengths ranging from $N_s=20$ to 200 we cover the full crossover from cross-link to entanglement dominated behavior. Our results support a recent version of the tube model which accounts for the different strain dependence of chain localization due to chemical cross-links and entanglements.
The polymer relaxation dynamic of a sample, stretched up to the stress hardening regime, is measured, at room temperature, as a function of the strain $λ$ for a wide range of the strain rate $\dotγ$, by an original dielectric spectroscopy set up. The mechanical stress modies the shape of the dielectric spectra mainly because it affects the dominant polymer relaxation time $τ$, which depends on $λ$ and is a decreasing function of $\dotγ$. The fastest dynamics is not reached at yield but in the softening regime. The dynamics slows down during the hardening, with a progressive increase of $τ$. A …
A simple theory for glassy polymeric mechanical response which accounts for large scale chain relaxation is presented. It captures the crossover from perfect-plastic response to strong strain hardening as the degree of polymerization $N$ increases, without invoking entanglements. By relating hardening to interactions on the scale of monomers and chain segments, we correctly predict its magnitude. Strain activated relaxation arising from the need to maintain constant chain contour length reduces the $N$ dependence of the characteristic relaxation time by a factor $\sim \dotεN$ during active def…
Localized polymerization in subwavelength volumes using two photon dyes has now become a well-established method for fabrication of subwavelength structures. Unfortunately, the two photon absorption dyes used in such process are not only expensive but also proprietary. LTPO-L is an inexpensive, easily available single photon photoinitiator and has been used extensively for single photon absorption of UV light for polymerization. These polymerization volumes however are not localized and extend to micron size resolution having limited applications. We have exploited high quantum yield of radica…
Numerous models have been developed in the literature to simulate the thermomechanical behavior of amorphous polymer at large strain. These models generally show a good agreement with experimental results when the material is submitted to uniaxial loadings (tension or compression) or in case of shear loadings. However, this agreement is highly degraded when they are used in the case of combined load cases. A generalization of these models to more complex loads is scarce. In particular, models that are identified in tension or compression often overestimate the response in shear. One difficulty…
We derive a large-strain plate model that allows to describe transient, coupled processes involving elasticity and solvent migration, by performing a dimensional reduction of a three-dimensional poroelastic theory. We apply the model to polymer gel plates, for which a specific kinematic constraint and constitutive relations hold. Finally, we assess the accuracy of the plate model with respect to the parent three-dimensional model through two numerical benchmarks, solved by means of the finite element method. Our results show that the theory offers an efficient computational framework for the s…
Glassy polymers show strain hardening: at constant extensional load, their flow first accelerates, then arrests. Recent experiments have found this to be accompanied by a striking and unexplained dip in the segmental relaxation time. Here we explain such behavior by combining a minimal model of flow-induced liquefaction of a glass, with a description of the stress carried by strained polymers, creating a non-factorable interplay between aging and strain-induced rejuvenation. Under constant load, liquefaction of segmental motion permits strong flow that creates polymer-borne stress. This slows …
The non-linear stress-strain relation for crosslinked polymer networks is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Previously we demonstrated the importance of trapped entanglements in determining the elastic and relaxational properties of networks. Here we present new results for the stress versus strain for both dry and swollen networks. Models which limit the fluctuations of the network strands like the tube model are shown to describe the stress for both elongation and compression. For swollen networks, the total modulus is found to decrease like (V_0/V)^{2/3} and goes to the phantom …
Using coarse-grained molecular-dynamics simulations, a generic styrene-(block)-butadiene-(block)-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer under lamellar conformation is used in order to investigate the mutual entanglement evolution when a structure of alternating glassy (S)/rubbery (B) layers is submitted to an imposed deformation. By varying the amount of loop chains between each phase, i.e. noncrossing chains, it is possible to generate different types of S/B interface definitions. A specific boundary driven tensile strain protocol has been developed in order to mimic "real" experiments and measure …
We demonstrate a novel in situ polymerization technique to develop localized polymer coatings on the surface of dispersed pristine graphene sheets. Graphene sheets show great promise as strong, conductive fillers in polymer nanocomposites; however, difficulties in dispersion quality and interfacial strength between filler and matrix have been a persistent problem for graphene-based nanocomposites, particularly for pristine graphene. To address this problem, a physisorbed polymer layer is used to stabilize graphene sheets in solution. To form this protective layer, an organic microenvironment i…
A scattering polarizer is created by subjecting a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film to tensile strain. The optomechanical properties of the film are investigated by simultaneously measuring the stress-strain and polarization dependent optical transmission characteristics. The correlation between transmittances of two orthogonal polarizations and the stress-strain curve reveals that the polymer orientation as well as the droplet shape anisotropy influences the liquid crystal alignment within the droplets. A Monte-Carlo simulation based on the Lebwohl-Lasher model is used to explain t…
Optical tweezers microrheology (OTM) offers a powerful approach to probe the nonlinear response of complex soft matter systems, such as networks of entangled polymers, over wide-ranging spatiotemporal scales. OTM can also uniquely characterize the microstructural dynamics that lead to the intriguing nonlinear rheological properties that these systems exhibit. However, the strain in OTM measurements, applied by optically forcing a micro-probe through the material, induces network inhomogeneities in and around the strain path, and the resultant flow field complicates the measured response of the…
Hyper-viscoelastic polymers have multiple areas of application including aerospace, biomedicine, and automotive. Their mechanical responses are therefore extremely important to understand, particularly because they exhibit strong rate and temperature dependence, including a low temperature brittle transition. Relationships between the response at various strain rates and temperatures are investigated and a framework developed to predict large strain response at rates of c. 1000 s$^{-1}$ and above where experiments are unfeasible. A master curve of the storage modulus's rate dependence at a ref…
We explore the link between soft vibrational modes and local relaxation events in polymer glasses during physical aging, active deformation at constant strain rate, and subsequent recovery. A softness field is constructed out of the superposition of the amplitudes of the lowest energy normal modes, and found to predict up to 70% of the rearrangements. Overlap between softness and rearrangements increases logarithmically during aging and recovery phases as energy barriers rise due to physical aging, while yielding rapidly rejuvenates the overlap to that of a freshly prepared glass. In the strai…
We study the stress response to a step strain of covalently bonded gelatin gels in the temperature range where triple helix reversible crosslink formation is prohibited. We observe slow stress relaxation towards a $T$-dependent finite asymptotic level. We show that this is assignable to the strain-induced coil $\rightarrow$ helix transition, previously evidenced by S. Courty, J.L. Gornall and E.M. Terentjev (PNAS, {\bf 102}, 13453 (2005)), of a fraction of the polymer strands. Relaxation proceeds, in a first stage, according to a stretched exponential dynamics, then crosses over to a terminal …
How local stresses propagate through polymeric fluids, and, more generally, how macromolecular dynamics give rise to viscoelasticity are open questions vital to wide-ranging scientific and industrial fields. Here, to unambiguously connect polymer dynamics to force response, and map stress propagation in macromolecular materials, we present a powerful approach-Optical Tweezers integrating Differential Dynamic Microscopy (OpTiDMM)-that simultaneously imposes local strains, measures resistive forces, and analyzes the motion of the surrounding polymers. Our measurements with blends of ring and lin…
In this Perspective, I describe recent work on systems in which the traditional distinctions between (i) unentangled vs. well-entangled systems and (ii) melts vs. glasses seem least useful, and argue for the broader use in glassy polymer mechanics of two more dichotomies: systems which possess (iii) unary vs. binary and (iv) cooperative vs. nonccoperative relaxation dynamics. I discuss the applicability of (iii-iv) to understanding the functional form of glassy strain hardening. Results from molecular dynamics simulations show that the "dramatic" strain hardening observed in densely entangled …
Hollow-core toroidal micro-cavities are obtained by self-rolling of double-layer (polyvinyl pyridine/polystyrole) polymer films. Rolling of the bilayer is due to preferential swelling of the polyvinyl pyridine in water solution of dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid. The tube formation proceeds from a circular opening in the film made by photolithography or by mechanical scratching. The toroid equilibrium dimensions are determined by the balance of the elastic energy relaxation via the film scrolling and the work of the in-plane stretching that is due to increasing radius of the toroid. The principa…
A study of methodological nature demonstrates the efficiency of a probation test allowing for the intrinsic character of a rheological constitutive law to be assessed. Such a law is considered here for Semi-Crystalline Polymers exhibiting necking and for large deformation. In the framework of a $(\dotσ, σ, \dot\varepsilon, \varepsilon)$ behavior's law, tensile experiments conducted at an imposed constant strain rate $\dot\varepsilon_0$ bring true stress responses from which constitutive (material) parameters can be identified from Model-Based Metrology concepts. The same experiment repeated at…
Molecular dynamic simulation enables one to correlate the evolution of the micro-structure with anisotropic stress when a material is subject to strain. The anisotropic stress due to a constant strain-rate load in a cross-linked polymer is primarily dependent on the mean-square bond length and mean-square bond angle. Excluded volume interactions due to chain stacking and spatial distribution also has a bearing on the stress response. The bond length distribution along the chain is not uniform. Rather, the bond lengths at the end of the chains are larger and uniformly decrease towards the middl…
The entropy of a polymer confined in a curved surface and the elastic free energy of a membrane consisting of polymers are obtained by scaling analysis. It is found that the elastic free energy of the membrane has the form of the in-plane strain energy plus Helfrich's curvature energy [Z. Naturforsch. C \textbf{28}, 693 (1973)]. The elastic constants in the free energy are obtained by discussing two simplified models: one is the polymer membrane without in-plane strains and asymmetry between its two sides, which is the counterpart of quantum mechanics in curved surface [Jensen and Koppe, Ann. …
The properties of semiflexible polymers tethered by one end to an impenetrable wall and exposed to oscillatory shear flow are investigated by mesoscale simulations. A polymer, confined in two dimensions, is described by a linear bead-spring chain, and fluid interactions are incorporated by the Brownian multiparticle collision dynamics approach. At small strains, the polymers follow the applied flow field. However, at high strain, we find a strongly nonlinear response, with major conformational changes. Polymers are stretched along the flow direction and exhibit U-shaped conformations while fol…
We report experimental evidence that a polymer stretched at constant strain rate $\dotλ$ presents complex memory effects after that $\dotλ$ is set to zero at a specific strain $λ_w$ for a duration $t_w$, ranging from $100$s to $ 2.2\times10^5$s. When the strain rate is resumed, both the stress and the dielectric constant relax to the unperturbed state non monotonically. The relaxations depend on the observable, on $λ_w$ and on $t_w$. Relaxation master curves are obtained by scaling the relaxation time as $t/\ln (t_w)$. The dielectric evolution also captures the distribution of the relaxation t…
The structural properties of a linear polymer and its evolution in time have a strong bearing on its anisotropic stress response. The mean-square bond length and mean bond angle are the critical parameters that influence the time-varying stress developed in the polymer. The bond length distribution along the chain is uniform without any abrupt changes at the ends. Among the externally set parameters such as density, temperature, strain rate, and chain length, the density as well as the chain length of the polymer have a significant effect on the stress. At high density values, changes in mean-…
The stress-strain relationship of biological soft tissues affected by Marfan's syndrome is believed to be non-convex. More specifically, Haughton and Merodio recently proposed a strain-energy density leading to localized strain softening, in order to model the unusual mechanical behavior of these isotropic, incompressible tissues. Here we investigate how this choice of strain energy affects the results of some instabilities studies, such as those concerned with the compression of infinite and semi-infinite solids, slabs, and cylinders, or with the bending of blocks, and draw comparisons with k…
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the effects of deformation on the segmental dynamics in an aging polymer glass. Individual particle trajectories are decomposed into a series of discontinuous hops, from which we obtain the full distribution of relaxation times and displacements under three deformation protocols: step stress (creep), step strain, and constant strain rate deformation. As in experiments, the dynamics can be accelerated by several orders of magnitude during deformation, and the history dependence is entirely erased during yield (mechanical rejuvenation). Agin…
We study the linear instability with respect to necking of a filament of polymeric fluid undergoing uniaxial extension. Contrary to the widely discussed Considere criterion, we find the onset of instability to relate closely to the onset of downward curvature in the time (and so strain) evolution of the zz component of the molecular strain, for extension along the z axis. In establishing this result numerically across five of the most widely used models of polymer rheology, and by analytical calculation, we argue it to apply generically. Particularly emphasized is the importance of polymer cha…
Polybutene-1 (PB-1), a typical semicrystalline polymer, in its stable form I shows a peculiar temperature dependent strain-whitening behavior when being stretched at different temperatures where the extent of strain-whitening weakens with the increasing of stretching temperature reaching a minima value followed by an increase at higher stretching temperatures. Correspondingly, a stronger strain-hardening phenomenon was observed at higher stretching temperatures. The strain-whitening phenomenon in semicrystalline polymers has its origin of cavitation process during stretching. In this work, the…
Polymers in a turbulent flow are stretched out by the fluctuating velocity gradient; the stationary probability distribution function (p.d.f.) of extensions $R$ has a power-law tail with an exponent that increases with the Weissenberg number $Wi$, a nondimensional measure of polymer elasticity. This study addresses the following questions: (i) What is the role of the non-Gaussian statistics of the turbulent velocity gradient on polymer stretching? (ii) How does the p.d.f. of $R$ evolve to its asymptotic stationary form? Our analysis is based on simulations of the dynamics of finitely-extensibl…

Packings of macroscopic granular chains capture some of the essential aspects of molecular polymer systems and have been suggested as a paradigm to understand the physics on a molecular scale. However, here we demonstrate that the interparticle friction $μ$ in granular chain packings, which has no counterpart in polymer systems, leads to a nontrivial yielding and rheological response. Based on discrete element simulations we study the nonlinear rheology of random packings of granular chains under large amplitude oscillatory shear. We find that the maximum stress and the penetration depth of th…
Going beyond the classical Gaussian approximation of Einstein's fluctuation theory, Ruppeiner gave it a Riemannian geometric structure with an entropic metric. This yielded a fundamental quantity - the Riemannian curvature, which was used to extract information on the nature of interactions between molecules in fluids, ideal gases and other open systems. In this article, we examine the implications of this curvature in a non-equilibrium thermodynamic system where relaxation is sufficiently slow so as not to invalidate the local equilibrium hypothesis. The non-equilibrium system comprises of a …
The plastic deformation processes that occur in a tensily deformed High Density Polyethylene specimen were studied from full-field strain and strain rate measurements obtained by 3D DIC (Digital Image Correlation). The tensile tests were performed every 10{\textdegree}C from room temperature to 120{\textdegree}C . For temperatures below 60{\textdegree}C , it is shown that the strain localization effect becomes less pronounced when the temperature increases. For temperatures higher than 60{\textdegree}C , the material is found to exhibit double yielding behavior. By analyzing the DIC data in Lag…
The present contribution deals with the thermomechanical modeling of the strain-induced crystallization in unfilled polymers. This phenomenon significantly influences mechanical and thermal properties of polymers and has to be taken into consideration when planning manufacturing processes as well as applications of the final product. In order to simultaneously capture both kinds of effects, the model proposed starts by introducing a triple decomposition of the deformation gradient and furthermore uses thermodynamic framework for material modeling based on the Coleman--Noll procedure and minimu…
