The polymer relaxation dynamic of a sample, stretched up to the stress hardening regime, is measured, at room temperature, as a function of the strain $λ$ for a wide range of the strain rate $\dotγ$, by an original dielectric spectroscopy set up. The mechanical stress modies the shape of the dielectric spectra mainly because it affects the dominant polymer relaxation time $τ$, which depends on $λ$ and is a decreasing function of $\dotγ$. The fastest dynamics is not reached at yield but in the softening regime. The dynamics slows down during the hardening, with a progressive increase of $τ$. A small inuence of $\dotγ$ and $λ$ on the dielectric strength cannot be excluded.
We report experimental evidence that a polymer stretched at constant strain rate $\dotλ$ presents complex memory effects after that $\dotλ$ is set to zero at a specific strain $λ_w$ for a duration $t_w$, ranging from $100$s to $ 2.2\times10^5$s. When the strain rate is resumed, both the stress and the dielectric constant relax to the unperturbed state non monotonically. The relaxations depend on the observable, on $λ_w$ and on $t_w$. Relaxation master curves are obtained by scaling the relaxation time as $t/\ln (t_w)$. The dielectric evolution also captures the distribution of the relaxation t…
We use computer simulations to study the relaxation of strongly deformed highly entangled polymer melts in the non-linear viscoelastic regime, focusing on anisotropic chain conformations after isochoric elongation. The Doi-Edwards tube model and its GLaMM extension, incorporating contour length fluctuation and convective constraint release, predict a retraction of the polymer chain extension in all directions, setting in immediately after deformation. This prediction has been challenged by experiment, simulation, and other theoretical studies, questioning the general validity of the tube conce…
Enhancement of coil--stretch hysteresis by self-concentration in extensional flows, and its implications for capillary thinning of liquid bridges of dilute polymer solutions
In the present work, we study the equilibrium conformations of linear polyelectrolytes tethered onto a spherical, oppositely charged core in equilibrium with an ionic reservoir of fixed concentration. Particular focus is placed on the situation of stretched chains, where the monomer concentration is known to display an inverse square-law decay far away from the spherical surface, which is then further extrapolated all the way down to the grafting core. While the equilibrium distributions of mobile ions are computed in the framework of a classical Density Functional Theory (cDFT) that incorpora…
Stretched exponential relaxation is a ubiquitous feature of homogeneous glasses. The stretched exponential decay function can be derived from the diffusion-trap model, which predicts certain critical values of the fractional stretching exponent. In practical implementations of glass relaxation models, it is computationally convenient to represent the stretched exponential function as a Prony series of simple exponentials. Here, we perform a comprehensive mathematical analysis of the Prony series approximation of the stretched exponential relaxation, including optimized coefficients for certain…
We investigate the local viscosity of a polymer glass around its glass transition temperature using environment-sensitive fluorescent molecular rotors embedded in the polymer matrix. The rotors' fluorescence depends on the local viscosity, and measuring the fluorescence intensity and lifetime of the probe therefore allows to measure the local free volume in the polymer glass when going through the glass transition. This also allows us to study the local viscosity and free volume when the polymer film is put under an external stress. We find that the film does not flow homogeneously, but underg…
We propose an atomistic model for correlated particle dynamics in liquids and glasses predicting both slow stretched-exponential relaxation (SER) and fast compressed-exponential relaxation (CER). The model is based on the key concept of elastically interacting local relaxation events. SER is related to slowing down of dynamics of local relaxation events as a result of this interaction, whereas CER is related to the avalanche-like dynamics in the low-temperature glass state. The model predicts temperature dependence of SER and CER seen experimentally and recovers the simple, Debye, exponential …
We provide a perspective on polymer glass formation, with an emphasis on models in which the fluid entropy and collective particle motion dominate the theoretical description and data analysis. We first discuss the dynamics of liquids in the high temperature Arrhenius regime, where transition state theory is formally applicable. We then summarize the evolution of the entropy theory from a qualitative framework for organizing and interpreting temperature-dependent viscosity data by Kauzmann to the formulation of a hypothetical `ideal thermodynamic glass transition' by Gibbs and DiMarzio, follow…
Enthalpic interactions at the interface between nanoparticles and matrix polymers is known to influence various properties of the resultant polymer nanocomposites (PNC). For athermal PNCs, consisting of grafted nanoparticles embedded in chemically identical polymers, the role and extent of the interface layer (IL) interactions in determining the properties of the nanocomposites is not very clear. Here, we demonstrate the influence of the interfacial layer dynamics on the fragility and dynamical heterogeneity (DH) of athermal and glassy PNCs. The IL properties are altered by changing the grafte…
We study the viscoelastic response of amorphous polymers using theory and simulations. By accounting for internal stresses and considering instantaneous normal modes (INMs) within athermal non-affine theory, we make parameter-free predictions of the dynamic viscoelastic moduli obtained in coarse-grained simulations of polymer glasses at non-zero temperatures. The theoretical results show very good correspondence with rheology data collected from molecular dynamics simulations over five orders of magnitude in frequency, with some instabilities that accumulate in the low-frequency part on approa…
Focusing on simulated polymer glasses well below the glass transition, we confirm the validity and the efficiency of the recently proposed simple-average expression $G(t) = μ_A - h(t)$ for the computational determination of the shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. Here, $μ_A = G(0)$ characterizes the affine shear transformation of the system at $t=0$ and $h(t)$ the mean-square displacement of the instantaneous shear stress as a function of time $t$. This relation is seen to be particulary useful for systems with quenched or sluggish transient shear stresses which necessarily arise below the…
The number of compact structures of a single condensed polymer (SCP), with similar free energies, grows exponentially with the degree of polymerization. In analogy with structural glasses (SGs), we expect that at low temperatures chain relaxation should occur by activated transitions between the compact metastable states. By evolving the states of the SCP that is linearly coupled to a reference state, we show that, below a dynamical transition temperature ($T_d$), the SCP is trapped in a metastable state leading to slow dynamics. At a lower temperature, $T_K \ne 0$, the configurational entropy…
To study the cooling behavior and the glass transition of polymer melts in bulk and with free surfaces a coarse-grained weakly semi-flexible polymer model is developed. Based on a standard bead spring model with purely repulsive interactions an attractive potential between non-bonded monomers is added, such that the pressure of polymer melts is tuned to zero. Additionally, the commonly used bond bending potential [Everaers et al., Science 303, 823 (2004)] controlling the chain stiffness is replaced by a new bond bending potential. For this model, we show that the Kuhn length and the internal d…
We investigate the steady-state extensional rheology of a dilute suspension of spherical particles in a dilute polymer solution. For a particle-free polymeric fluid, in addition to the solvent viscosity, the extensional viscosity due to the polymers, $μ^\text{poly}$, contributes to the total non-dimensionalized extensional viscosity $1+μ^\text{poly}$. When a small volume fraction, $ϕ$, of spheres is added to a polymeric fluid, the stress is altered by the Einstein viscosity of 2.5$ϕ$ and two additional stress contributions: the interaction stresslet and the particle-induced polymer stress (PIP…
