We provide a detailed analysis of several aspects of the turduckening technique for evolving black holes. At the analytical level we study the constraint propagation for a general family of BSSN-type formulation of Einstein's field equations and identify under what conditions the turducken procedure is rigorously justified and under what conditions constraint violations will propagate to the outside of the black holes. We present high-resolution spherically symmetric studies which verify our analytical predictions. Then we present three dimensional simulations of single distorted black holes using different variations of the turduckening method and also the puncture method. We study the effect that these different methods have on the coordinate conditions, constraint violations, and extracted gravitational waves. We find that the waves agree up to small but non-vanishing differences, caused by escaping superluminal gauge modes. These differences become smaller with increasing detector location.
to turducken (turduckens, turduckening, turduckened, turduckened) [math.]: To stuff a black hole. We analyze and apply an alternative to black hole excision based on smoothing the interior of black holes with arbitrary - possibly constraint violating - initial data, and solving the vacuum Einstein evolution equations everywhere. By deriving the constraint propagation system for our hyperbolic formulation of the BSSN evolution system we rigorously prove that the constraints propagate causally and so any constraint violations introduced inside the black holes cannot affect the exterior spacetime…
The superradiant stability of higher dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. We extend an analytical method developed by one of the authors in the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases to non-extremal cases. Using the new analytical method, we revisit four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole case and obtain that four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is superradiantly stable, which is consistent with results in previous works. We then analytically prove that the five-dimensional Reissner-Nor…
We review the papers [1-3]. We discuss possibilities of studying the quasi-normal modes of black holes that are not known in an analytical form. Such black holes appear as solutions in various theoretical models and real astrophysical approximations when one takes into account the black hole neighborhood.
The spontaneous scalarization of Schwarzscild-AdS is investigated in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss--Bonnet (ESGB) theory. Firstly, we construct scalarized AdS black holes numerically. Secondly, making use of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), we obtain analytical approximate solutions for scalarized AdS black holes in the ESGB theory. It is found that scalarized AdS black holes constructed numerically are consistent with analytical approximate solutions in the whole space.
Perturbations in a draining vortex can be described analytically in terms of confluent Heun functions. In the context of analogue models of gravity in ideal fluids, we investigate analytically the absorption length of waves in a draining bathtub, a rotating black hole analogue, using confluent Heun functions. We compare our analytical results with the corresponding numerical ones, obtaining excellent agreement.
It is recently shown that, besides the Schwarzshcild black hole solution, there exist also scalarized black hole solutions in some Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories. In this paper, we construct analytical expressions for the metric functions and scalar field configurations for these scalarized black hole solutions approximately by employing the continued fraction parametrization method and investigate their thermodynamic stability. It is found that the horizon entropy of a scalarized black hole is always smaller than that of a Schwarzschild black hole, which indicates that these scalarized…
We develop an analytical formalism for studying optical analogues of spherically symmetric black-hole spacetimes. We demonstrate the exact similarity between the electromagnetic wave equations in an inhomogeneous medium in flat spacetime and those in a general-relativistic curved spacetime respectively. The permittivity and the permeability of an inhomogeneous optical medium act as metric components of the analogue spacetime. Manifest properties of black holes like curved light trajectories follow directly from our formalism. Other black-hole phenomena like quasinormal modes can also be studie…
Gauss-Bonnet gravity provides one of the most promising frameworks to study curvature corrections to the Einstein action in supersymmetric string theories, while avoiding ghosts and keeping second order field equations. Although Schwarzschild-type solutions for Gauss-Bonnet black holes have been known for long, the Kerr-Gauss-Bonnet metric is missing. In this paper, a five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet approximation is analytically derived for spinning black holes and the related thermodynamical properties are briefly outlined.
Cosmic expansion influences the angular size of black hole shadow. The most general way to describe a black hole embedded into an expanding universe is to use the McVittie metric. So far, the exact analytical solution for the shadow size in the McVittie metric, valid for arbitrary law of expansion and arbitrary position of the observer, has not been found. In this paper, we present the first analytical solution for angular size of black hole shadow in McVittie metric as seen by observer comoving with the cosmic expansion. We use a method of matched asymptotic expansions to find approximate sol…
The superradiant stability of asymptotically flat D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. Recently, an analytical method has been proposed by the author and used to prove that five and six-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are superradiantly stable under charged massive scalar perturbation. We apply this analytical method in the D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases and prove that the D-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are all superradiantly stable under charged mas…
We review the analytical solution methods for the geodesic equations in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT-de Sitter spacetimes and its subclasses in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic functions. A short guide to corresponding literature for general timelike and lightlike motion is also presented.
In this paper, we consider the timelike and null geodesics around the static [GMGHS (Gibbons, Maeda, Garfinkle, Horowitz and Strominger), magnetically charged GMGHS, electrically charged GMGHS] and the rotating (Kerr-Sen dilaton-axion) dilaton black holes. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions. To classify the trajectories around the black holes, we use the analytical solution and effective potential techniques and then characterize the different types of the resulting orbits in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum. Also, using the obtained …
The ``moving puncture'' technique has led to dramatic advancements in the numerical simulations of binary black holes. Hannam et.al. have recently demonstrated that, for suitable gauge conditions commonly employed in moving puncture simulations, the evolution of a single black hole leads to a well-known time-independent, maximal slicing of Schwarzschild. They construct the corresponding solution in isotropic coordinates numerically and demonstrate its usefulness, for example for testing and calibrating numerical codes that employ moving puncture techniques. In this Brief Report we point out th…
We present the first analytic computation of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago gauge-invariant redshift function for a small mass in {\it eccentric} orbit around a {\it spinning} black hole. Our results give the redshift contributions that mix eccentricity and spin effects, through second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the eight-and-a-half post-Newtonian order.
We succeed to find compact analytical expressions which allow to easily extract the black hole spin from observations of its shadow, without need to construct or model the entire curve of the shadow. The deformation of Kerr black hole shadow can be characterised in a simple way by oblateness (the ratio of the horizontal and vertical angular diameters which are supposed to be measured by an observer). The deformation is significant in case the black hole is nearly extreme and observer is not so far from the equatorial plane. In this approximation, we present: (i) the spin lower limit via oblate…
Models of gravitational waveforms from coalescing black-hole binaries play a crucial role in the efforts to detect and interpret the signatures of those binaries in the data of large-scale interferometers. Here we summarize recent models that combine information both from analytical approximations and numerical relativity. We briefly lay out and compare the strategies employed to build such complete models and we recapitulate the errors associated with various aspects of the modelling process.
We analytically compute the gravitational self-force correction to the gyroscope precession along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in the Kerr spacetime, generalizing previous results for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results are accurate through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order and to second order in both eccentricity and rotation parameter. We also provide a post-Newtonian check of our results based on the currently known Hamiltonian for spinning binaries.
We present an analytical formalism, within the Effective-One-Body framework, which predicts gravitational-wave signals from inspiralling and coalescing black-hole binaries that agree, within numerical errors, with the results of the currently most accurate numerical relativity simulations for several different mass ratios. In the equal-mass case, the gravitational wave energy flux predicted by our formalism agrees, within numerical errors, with the most accurate numerical-relativity energy flux. We think that our formalism opens a realistic possibility of constructing a sufficiently accurate, …
In this paper we add a compact dimension to Schwarzschild-(anti-) de sitter and Kerr-(anti-) de sitter spacetimes, which describes (rotating) black string-(anti-) de sitter spacetime. We study the geodesic motion of test particles and light rays in this spacetime. We present the analytical solutions of the geodesic equations in terms of Weierstrass elliptic and Kleinian sigma hyperelliptical functions. We also discuss the possible orbits and classify them according to particle's energy and angular momentum. Moreover, the obtained results, are compared to Schwarzschild-(anti-) de sitter and Ker…
Tendex and vortex fields, defined by the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl curvature tensor, form the basis of a recently developed approach to visualizing spacetime curvature. In particular, this method has been proposed as a tool for interpreting results from numerical binary black hole simulations, providing a deeper insight into the physical processes governing the merger of black holes and the emission of gravitational radiation. Here we apply this approach to approximate but analytical initial data for both single boosted and binary black holes. …
In this paper, we investigate the geodesic motion of massive and massless test particles in the vicinity of a black hole space-time surrounded by perfect fluid (quintessence, dust, radiation, cosmological constant and phantom) in Rastall theory. We obtain the full set of analytical solutions of the geodesic equation of motion in the space-time of this black hole. For all cases of perfect fluid, we consider some different values of Rastall coupling constant $kλ$ so that the equations of motion have integer powers of $\tilde{r}$ and also can be solved analytically. These analytical solutions are…
The Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift function for particles moving along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole is currently known up to the second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We improve the analytical computation of such a gauge-invariant quantity by including terms up to the fourth order in eccentricity at the same post-Newtonian approximation level. We also check that our results agrees with the corresponding post-Newtonian expectation of the same quantity, calculated by using the currently known Hamiltonian f…
We consider the motion of test particles in the spacetime of a black hole in f(R) gravity. The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions and derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum as well as the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the real constant $β$.
Dynamical Einstein cluster is a spherical self-gravitating system of counterrotating particles, which may expand, oscillate and collapse. This system exhibits critical behaviour in its collapse at the threshold of black hole formation. It appears when the specific angular momentum of particles is tuned finely to the critical value. We find the unique exact self-similar solution at the threshold. This solution begins with a regular surface, involves timelike naked singularity formation and asymptotically approaches a static self-similar cluster.
We study the geodesic equations in the space-time of neutral Brans-Dicke Dilaton black hole in three dimensions, BTZ black holes and the 2+1 black hole. We use the process of separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation to obtain the constants of motion. The whole analytical solution of the geodesic equations in the space-times of the intended black holes are shown completely. Moreover, the geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions. Furthermore, with use of the analytical solution and effective potential technique some trajectories around the black holes are classi…
Charged massive scalar fields are studied in the gravitational, electromagnetic, dilaton, and axion fields of rotating linear dilaton black holes. In this geometry, we separate the covariant Klein-Gordon equation into radial and angular parts and obtain the exact solutions of both the equations in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Using the radial solution, we study the problems of resonant frequencies, entropy/area quantization, and greybody factor. We also analyze the behavior of the wave solutions near the event horizon of the rotating linear dilaton black hole and derive its Hawking t…
In this article, we provide a review of the current state of the research of the black hole shadow, focusing on analytical (as opposed to numerical and observational) studies. We start with particular attention to the definition of the shadow and its relation to the often used concepts of escape cone, critical impact parameter and particle cross-section. For methodological purposes, we present the derivation of the angular size of the shadow for an arbitrary spherically symmetric and static space-time, which allows one to calculate the shadow for an observer at arbitrary distance from the cent…
We raise the analytical knowledge of the eccentricity-expansion of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift invariant in a Schwarzschild spacetime up to the 9.5th post-Newtonian order (included) for the $e^2$ and $e^4$ contributions, and up to the 4th post-Newtonian order for the higher eccentricity contributions through $e^{20}$. We convert this information into an analytical knowledge of the effective-one-body radial potentials $\bar d(u)$, $ρ(u)$ and $q(u)$ through the 9.5th post-Newtonian order. We find that our analytical results are compatible with current corresponding numerical self-force da…

Higher-order photon rings can be expected to be detected in a more detailed image of the black hole found in future observations. These rings are lensed images of the luminous matter surrounding the black hole and are formed by photons that loop around it. In this paper we have succeeded to derive an analytical expression for the shape of the higher-order rings in the form that is most convenient for application: the explicit equation of the curve in polar coordinates. The formula describes the apparent shape of the higher-order image of the circular ring with the given radius around Schwarzsc…
It is reported that Kerr-Newman and Kerr-Sen black holes are unstable to perturbations of charged massive scalar field. In this paper, we study analytically the complex frequencies which characterize charged massive scalar fields in a near-extremal Kerr-Sen black hole. For near-extremal Kerr-Sen black holes and for charged massive scalar fields in the eikonal large-mass $\mathcal{M}\gg μ$ regime, where $\mathcal{M}$ is the mass of the black hole, and $μ$ is the mass of the charged scalar field, we have obtained a simple expression for the dimensionless ratio $ω_I /\left(ω_R - ω_c\right)$, wher…
We investigate the interior hyperbolic region of axisymmetric and stationary black holes surrounded by a matter distribution. First, we treat the corresponding initial value problem of the hyperbolic Einstein equations numerically in terms of a single-domain fully pseudo-spectral scheme. Thereafter, a rigorous mathematical approach is given, in which soliton methods are utilized to derive an explicit relation between the event horizon and an inner Cauchy horizon. This horizon arises as the boundary of the future domain of dependence of the event horizon. Our numerical studies provide strong ev…
Analyzing the Influence of Geometrical Deformation on Photon Sphere and Shadow Radius: A New Analytical Approach -Stationary, and Axisymmetric Spacetime
Chargeless massive scalar fields are studied in the spacetime of Born-Infeld dilaton black holes (BIDBHs). We first separate the massive covariant Klein-Gordon equation into radial and angular parts and obtain the exact solution of the radial equation in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Using the obtained radial solution, we show how one gets the exact quasinormal modes (QNMs) for some particular cases. We also solve the Klein-Gordon equation in the spacetime of BIDBH with a cosmic string in which we point out the effect of the conical deficit on the BIDBH. The analytical solutions of th…
We investigate analytically gravitational lensing by charged, stationary, axially symmetric Kerr-Sen dilaton-axion black hole in the weak deflection limit. Approximate solutions to the lightlike equations of motion are present up to and including third-order terms in $M/b$, $a/b$ and $r_α/b$, where $M$ is the black hole mass, $a$ is the angular momentum, $r_α=Q^2/M$, $Q$ being the charge and $b$ is the impact parameter of the light ray. We compute the positions of the two weak field images, the corresponding signed and absolute magnifications up to post-Newtonian order. It is shown that there …
We study null rays propagation in a spacetime of static Schwarzschild--Tangherlini black holes in arbitrary number of dimensions. We focus on the bending angle and the retarded time delay for rays emitted in the vicinity of a black hole and propagating to the infinity. We obtain an analytic expression in terms of elementary functions which approximate the bending angle and time delay in these spacetimes with high accuracy. We analyze the relative error of the developed analytic approximations and show that it is quite small in the complete domain of the parameter space for the rays reaching th…
We update the analytical estimate of the final spin of a coalescing black-hole binary derived within the Effective-One-Body (EOB) approach. We consider unequal-mass non-spinning black-hole binaries. It is found that a more complete account of relevant physical effects (higher post-Newtonian accuracy, ringdown losses) allows the {\it analytical} EOB estimate to `converge towards' the recently obtained {\it numerical} results within 2%. This agreement illustrates the ability of the EOB approach to capture the essential physics of coalescing black-hole binaries. Our analytical approach allows one…
We present approximate analytical solutions to the Hamiltonian and momentum constraint equations, corresponding to systems composed of two black holes with arbitrary linear and angular momentum. The analytical nature of these initial data solutions makes them easier to implement in numerical evolutions than the traditional numerical approach of solving the elliptic equations derived from the Einstein constraints.

I present two results that show that, despite its unusual non-linear form, the phenomenology of entangled relativity remains close to the one of general relativity -- without having any free parameter that can be fine tuned in order to facilitate this. In particular, I present the analytical solutions for spherically charged black-holes, and both the analytical and numerical solutions for neutron stars.
We give an analytical formula for the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of a rotating black hole with subtracted geometry. This is the first example of an exact, analytical result for a four-dimensional rotating black hole.
Although in general the problem of setting up initial conditions for black hole binary simulations is complicated by the presence of singularities, we show that the methods presented …
The superradiant stability of higher dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. We extend our previous studies of four- and five-dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases to six-dimensional case. By analyzing the derivative of the effective potential with an analytical method, we find that no potential well exists outside the outer horizon of the black hole for the superradiant scalar modes. This means that there is no black hole bomb for the system consisting of six-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom…
In this work we study regular black holes from a global perspective looking for evading some of the well-known singularity theorems by using their "reverses". Then, model geometries for the slices of typical spherically symmetric, (locally) static four dimensional regular black hole solutions are described from both an analytical and a topological point of view. While the finiteness of both the scalar and Kretchmann curvature of the slices around the regular center determines the geometry of the core, the positive answer to the Poincaré conjecture assures that, under two assumptions, its topol…
We obtain analytical approximate black hole solutions for higher derivative gravity in the presence of Maxwell electromagnetic source. We construct near horizon and asymptotic solutions and then use these to obtain an approximate analytic solution using a continued fraction method to get a complete solution. We compute the thermodynamic quantities and check the first law and Smarr formula. Finally, we investigate the null and time-like geodesics of this black hole.
The dynamics of the gravitational collapse is examined in the realm of string based formalism of D-branes that encompass General Relativity as a low energy limit. A complete analytical solution is given to the spherically symmetric collapse of a pure dust star, including its matching with a corrected Schwarzschild exterior spacetime. The collapse forms a black hole (an exterior event horizon) enclosing not a singularity but perpetually bouncing matter in the infinite chain of spacetime maximal analytical extensions inside the outer event horizon. This chain of analytical extensions has a struc…
The properties of modified Hayward black hole space-time can be investigated through analyzing the particle geodesics. By means of a detailed analysis of the corresponding effective potentials for a massive particle, we find all possible orbits which are allowed by the energy levels. The trajectories of orbits are plotted by solving the equation of orbital motion numerically. We conclude that whether there is an escape orbit is associated with $b$ (angular momentum). The properties of orbital motion are related to $b$, $α$ ($α$ is associated with the time delay) and $β$ ($β$ is related to 1-lo…
We consider the equivalence of quasinormal modes and geodesic quantities recently brought back due to the black hole shadow observation by Event Horizon Telescope. Using WKB method we found an analytical relation between the real part of quasinormal frequencies at the eikonal limit and black hole shadow radius. We verify this correspondence with two black hole families in $4$ and $D$ dimensions, respectively.
A bosonic field impinging on a rotating black hole can be amplified as it scatters off the hole, a phenomena known as superradiant scattering. If in addition the field has a non-zero rest mass then the mass term effectively works as a mirror, reflecting the scattered wave back towards the black hole. In this physical system, known as a black-hole bomb, the wave may bounce back and forth between the black hole and some turning point amplifying itself each time. Consequently, the massive field grows exponentially over time and is unstable. Former analytical estimations of the timescale associate…
We study the Hawking radiation emitted into the bulk by $(D+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. It is well-known that the black-hole spectrum departs from exact blackbody form due to the frequency dependence of the `greybody' factors. For intermediate values of $D$ ($3\leq D\lesssim10$), these frequency-dependent factors may significantly modify the spectrum of the emitted radiation. However, we point out that for $D\gg1$, the typical wavelengths in the black-hole spectrum are much {\it shorter} than the size of the black hole. In this regime, the greybody factors are well described by …
Here we construct approximate analytical forms for the metric coefficients and fields representing the scalarized Einstein-Maxwell black holes with various couplings of the scalar field, once the parameters of the system are fixed. By increasing approximation order, one can obtain the analytic representation with any desired accuracy, what was tested via calculations of shadows for these black holes by using approximate analytical and accurate numerical metric functions. We share the Mathematica code which allows one to find an appropriate analytical form of the metric for any couplings and va…
